Focus's dynamics are more than sufficient. Sound insulation is insufficient, you can hear the road, tires, etc. The climate copes with both heat and cold with dignity. Auto - shit. Spanish assembly, leather upholstery - all complete nonsense. The cost is 640 thousand rubles. For such grandmother, you could take a Mazda. At low revs it stalls, stalls when squeezing the clutch at speed, on the ring road it almost flew into the fence. Sold - a fairy tale, almost ...

The Russian Focus II was equipped with gasoline engines of 1.4 liters (80 hp), 1.6 liters (100 and 115 hp), 1.8 liters (125 hp) and 2.0 liters. (145 hp). Dealers also sold versions with a 1.8-liter turbodiesel with 115 horsepower. In the standard, a five-speed manual transmission of the IB5 series was combined with the 1.4-liter, 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter engines, and with the 2.0-liter - the same "five-step", but with the MTX75 index, capable of "digesting" a larger torque. For all gasoline engines, except for the 1.4-liter, a four-speed automatic was offered.

In 2008, Ford presented the updated Focus, which many even called the third "Focus" - so radically changed the car. But it was a classic restyling. The car now has different fenders, hood, bumpers, headlights, exterior mirrors, sidewalls - without moldings, but with more dynamic stiffeners. And the most noticeable innovation is the radiator grill in the form of a huge inverted trapezoid. For all versions except the sedan, LED taillights were offered as an option. There is one more luxury grade Titanium. In the cabin, the climate control unit and the dashboard have been updated. Finishing materials have become even better. But in technical terms, the Focus has not changed. It is the restyled versions that are preferable for the purchase - most of the congenital ailments in such "Focuses" have already been cured by this time.

Ford Focus II modifications

Body

As a rule, the inspection of the vending specimen begins with the body. We are still greeted by clothes. And if the Focus hasn't inspired you with its looks, don't be in a hurry to refuse. Burnt paint, sills sandblasted in the lower part, and darkened decorative details on high-mileage cars are more likely signs of natural aging than barbaric exploitation. Particular attention is paid to the chrome trim on the trunk lid: corrosion in the place of its contact with the body appears after two or three Russian winters. It costs about 5,000 rubles. At the same time, check the license plate light - its wiring quickly gives in to corrosion. Moreover, hatchbacks and sedans suffer from this to a greater extent. Repair - 1500 rubles.

In winter, due to moisture ingress, the sensor buttons of the trunk lock often freeze. In addition, the "Focus" from the first generation has preserved a proprietary sore - a sour hood opening lock. In order for it to open easily, it is necessary to lubricate the inner surface of the emblem that covers the lock cylinder. Better yet, change the standard plastic lock (3000 rubles) to a metal one from Mondeo. Often, the central locking fails, which is why not only the doors are blocked, but also the gas tank flap. Therefore, an attempt to refuel with a faulty central lock may fail.

Salon

The interior of "Focuses" is assembled accurately and conscientiously. Even with age, squeaks and crickets, he does not annoy. And fabric upholstery lends itself well to dry cleaning and is durable. True, it happens that the salon equipment and the electrician are moping. There were complaints about the failure of the seat heating. And for the original "hot water bottle" will have to pay about 10,000 rubles. There are known cases of whims of climate control due to the failure of the cabin temperature sensor (2500 rubles). Therefore, it is advisable to check the functionality of the air conditioner before purchasing a used Focus. Also drive the “stove” on different fan modes - the “whistling” of the motor will indicate its imminent death. The new electric motor will empty your pocket for 7,500 rubles. True, a burnt-out resistor (900 rubles) can often be the culprit for the sudden "death" of the fan. Often, low beam and size bulbs burn out, to replace which you have to remove the headlamp. And in winter you need to be ready to replace the faulty elements of the side mirrors. New amalgam is estimated at 2,000 rubles.

Engine

The basic 1.4-liter engine is praised by mechanics - it has practically no congenital ailments. The main thing is not to forget in time, every 80 thousand km of run, to update the timing belt (timing). True, because of its modest volume and power, it is usually "turned" to its fullest and it works to the limit, falling into second hands already at the limit of its resource.

1.6-liter engine (100 hp), which was installed on the first "Focus", rightfully bears the title of the most massive and reliable. It accounts for more than a third of all "Focuses" presented on the market today. The South African motor is designed for use in third world countries. Its simple design determines excellent maintainability and low cost of ownership. But this unit is considered by many to be rather weak for a modern car. Especially when paired with an "automatic".

Whether the case is its 115-strong counterpart, equipped with a variable valve timing system on the intake and exhaust shafts. The engine thrust is already quite enough in all modes, and it gets along much better with the “automatic”, and in terms of efficiency it is not inferior to the 100-strong version. Only this modern motor quickly "runs out" of the phase-shifter clutch (11,500 rubles). True, the unit became more durable on the modernized machines.

Modifications with "fours" of 1.8 and 2.0 liters are second only to versions with a 1.6 liter engine (100 hp). Both engines are identical in design and suffer from common ailments. The resource of the motors is 350 thousand km. And in the timing drive - a durable chain, which is usually replaced after 200 thousand km. But in order for the motors to live safely to old age, after the first "hundred", you should pay attention to the valve cover gasket (1,000 rubles), which begins to poison the oil. However, at first, you can limit yourself to tightening the bolts weakening due to vibrations. And then just a replacement. By this time, as a rule, the upper hydraulic support of the engine wears out (3500 rubles).

The unreasonable blues of a 1.8-liter engine (less often on a 2.0-liter) - poor traction and cold start, ragged idle speed and increased fuel consumption - was associated with the unfinished software of the electronic engine control unit. Therefore, dealers changed its firmware depending on the malfunction, although these measures were extremely reluctant. Ignition coils and high-voltage wires, gasoline pumps are also short-lived. The throttle valve block and the EGR valve become dirty quite quickly. Neutralizers (34,000 rubles) do not differ in their "mileage", the life expectancy of which depends on the engine oil consumption. If the appetite of the motor increases to 200 grams per 1000 km, you need to sound the alarm and contact the service. Otherwise, expensive repairs are guaranteed.

It is advisable to change the oil in a 1.8 liter turbodiesel after 5-10 thousand km, and refuel only at proven network filling stations. And then the high pressure fuel pump (TNVD) will overcome the bar of 200 thousand km. Repair - from 30,000 rubles. You will have to spend money on new injection nozzles (12,500 rubles each), flush the exhaust gas recirculation valve. After 100 thousand km, the dual-mass flywheel wears out. A similar problem, by the way, occurs with the 2.0-liter gasoline engine. If you feel jerks when starting off and a characteristic rattling, urgently change. The detail is expensive - from 25,000 rubles, but the consequences of the destruction caused by the flywheel will be even more noticeable.

Transmission

On a manual transmission IB5, after 50-80 thousand km, second gear “departures” are known due to weak synchronizers. And when working with an increased load, the axle of the satellites in the differential may burst, which threatens a hole in the crankcase and repairs for 100,000 rubles. If, during a test drive, the box "screams like an animal", then the input shaft bearing is worn out. And it urgently needs to be changed. Otherwise, the consequences can be depressing.

But the "mechanics" of the MTX75 are more durable. True, over time, oil seals and seals of the gear shift rod leak in it, and due to the low level of transmission oil, the shafts and gear rims of gear wheels quickly wear out. The clutch can last 100 thousand km or more, if not for the weak release bearing, made in a single block with the clutch slave cylinder, which wears out after 50 thousand km.

But the "automatic" is as simple as five kopecks and as reliable as a tank. The 4F27E box was installed on various Ford models back in the late 1980s, so today it is almost completely devoid of childhood diseases. After 150 thousand km, only the valve body repair (22,000 rubles) and the replacement of the pressure regulator solenoids will be required.

Suspension

With the Focus II's driving properties, everything is in perfect order thanks to the jewelry-tuned independent suspension. Its main elements are long-livers. The idyll is disturbed by the support bearings of the struts, "nursing" an average of 40–70 thousand km. Approximately the same amount was released for wheel bearings, which are replaced assembled with hubs. When replacing, do not forget about the ABS sensors - they are often damaged during dismantling. With light knocks in the suspension after 40,000 km, the stabilizer struts will make themselves felt. But the bushings last almost twice as long. Simultaneously with them, at 80-110 thousand km, the turn will come to renew the ball joints assembled with a lever and silent blocks. And then on the way and shock absorbers (4200 rubles.).

In the rear suspension, stabilizer struts are updated every 60–80 thousand km. The sleeves last on average 1.5 times longer. To "hundred" the lower levers wear out. Shock absorbers (3800 rubles each) have a slightly longer term - they often reach 110-140 thousand km.

In the steering, the tips with rods are enough for 50-80 thousand km. And the rail itself on the first machines even changed under warranty, but by 2008 it had become more durable. Moreover, the versions with 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines were equipped with a traditional hydraulic booster, and more powerful modifications came with an electro-hydraulic power steering, which could "burn out" the pump control board. Usually you have to change the entire node for 28,000 rubles.

Outcome

Finding a technically sound Ford Focus II will not be difficult. If modifications with reliable engines of 1.4 and 1.6 liters (100 hp) are not satisfied, you can find a Focus from Europe with an equally reliable 2.0-liter turbodiesel. True, we have few such versions. And it is better to opt for post-styling machines - they have already had childhood illnesses.

Ford Focus II (2004-2011): case history

The second generation Ford Focus became a bestseller even before its official sales. All the work on promotion in the Russian market was done for him by his predecessor, who was in great demand by our compatriots. And the appearance of the Ford Focus II marked a new, better product - the car was distinguished by good-quality finishing materials, good driving properties and a reasonable price, which was provided by the Vsevolozhsk assembly. Sedans, as well as three- and five-door hatchbacks, were produced under St. Petersburg, and station wagons and coupe-convertibles with a hardtop were brought from Europe.

Ford Focus II (2004-2011): case history

The Ford Focus is a car that gives you the full feel of what it means to be the focus of everyone's attention. Today - first impressions of the Focus 2.0 AT sedan, which we took for a long test.

Even three years after his birth, Ford's Golf Class student looks fresh. To a greater extent, this applies to super-original hatchbacks, however, our sedan is also an object of increased attention of others.

Judging by the expressions on their faces, seventy percent of the "spectators" crossing the road or passing the time in a traffic jam perceive "Focus" not only with interest, but also with favor. Meanwhile, I have heard such comments about the design of the car as "complete extravagance" or "this is too much." Therefore, the car's appearance is bright, "catchy".

I'm not sure that the chrome-plated front and rear trims, emphasizing the elitism of the configuration of our sedan (Ghia), significantly ennoble the car's appearance, but front foglights (an attribute of this version) and spectacular alloy wheels add charm to it.

With the futuristic front fascia that the Focus flaunts, you won't get bored in a day or a month. Great! And also practical. It is a pleasure to use the multifunctional knob for outdoor lighting, regulate the microclimate and read information from devices. The head unit with large control buttons, a logical operation algorithm and decent sound also cannot fail to satisfy. By the way, with the growth of noise in the cabin, the smart audio system itself increases the volume.

The location of the ashtray is not well thought out. On the one hand, the driver shakes off the ashes, almost without being distracted from the road. On the other hand, he risks getting burned on his neighbor's cigarette.

Our Focus is well equipped. In addition to "music", there is air conditioning, two airbags, electric mirrors, heated front seats, electric windows for all doors, etc. The windshield heating design is curious: practically invisible threads will melt the ice in a matter of minutes and make it possible to do without the hated scraper.

The front seat in "Focus" is comfortable. There are plenty of places; thanks to a wide range of adjustments, you can easily find the optimum landing. The driver has the privilege of electrically moving the seat up and down. The seats are good enough, although the backrests could better support the lower back. The backseat is less comfortable due to the vertical fit and limited legroom. However, a lot depends on the degree of selfishness of those sitting in front.

The sedan has a hefty 490-liter trunk. Anything you want can fit here. If not, the rear seat can be folded down (60/40 ratio). By the way, the backrest locks are placed in the cargo compartment, which is unlocked either with a button from the passenger compartment or with a key.

A two-liter engine with 130 hp. at 5500 min-1 and a maximum torque of 178 Nm at 4500 min-1, it may seem too luxurious for a compact "Focus". But for our sedan with a 4-speed automatic transmission, such a power unit is at the right time. The combination of ardent temperament with ease of control is the trump card of the "automatic" Focus with a powerful motor.

Starting from a traffic light over the shoulder of some VAZ "nine", it does not cost anything to become a leader and enjoy the operational space, you just need to cheer up the car with a sharp press on the gas pedal. Such handling of the accelerator allows you to overtake without stress, even at decent, over a hundred, speeds. At the same time, the engine fills the salon with sonorous singing. If you go smoothly, the Focus is as quiet as a fish. The only sound outside is the rustle of tires.

"Automatic" is unsophisticated and does not try to disguise the moments of switching. The transmission "pauses" are especially noticeable during intensive acceleration. Anyone else, but such frankness does not irritate us.

In terms of handling on a flat (and relatively flat) road, the Focus will give odds to many rivals. He perfectly writes curves, as if not subject to centrifugal forces. But on a subdued roadway, the stern of an empty car periodically rearranges during maneuvers. The suspension is stiff, so the car hardly rolls in corners. Small potholes do not violate driving comfort, but the sedan reacts nervously to serious bumps, the same will tell you the reviews of the owners.

The brakes are working in good faith. The steering is extremely sharp and informative. The feedback is superb, so keeping the car on the trajectory is pretty easy. The effort on the steering wheel at low speeds (say, when parking) could be less, but special muscle tension is not required. In addition, an excellent reactive action serves as a compensation for "righteous works."

At the initial stage of in-depth acquaintance with the Ford Focus, the car won over. Whether the trust will be justified will become clear in the near future.

Ford Focus 2.0 engine installed on the Focus of all three generations. True, the design of these power units is different. Naturally, the design and characteristics of the Focus 2 liter engines are different. The first Focus had an engine of the Zetec-E 2.0 series under the hood, in the second and third generation of the car, a motor from the Duratec-HE 2.0 and Duratec-HE Ti-VCT series, respectively, was installed. Today we will tell you about all the power units in more detail.

So, on the Focus of the first generation, they installed Zetec-E 2.0 with 16 valves. This is a typical DOHC with a timing belt. The cylinder block is cast iron. There are no automatic hydraulic pushers or hydraulic lifters in the valve mechanism, therefore the valve clearance must be adjusted manually. Engine characteristics are further.

Ford Focus 1 Zetec-E 2.0 engine

  • Working volume - 1989 cm3
  • Cylinder diameter - 84.8 mm
  • Piston stroke - 88 mm
  • Power hp - 130 at 5500 rpm
  • Torque - 178 Nm at 4500 rpm
  • Timing Belt - Belt (DOHC)
  • Compression ratio - 10
  • Fuel consumption in the city - 11.7 liters
  • Combined fuel consumption - 8.7 liters
  • Fuel consumption on the highway - 6.9 liters

On the second Ford Focus, the Duratec-HE 2.0 engine appeared. The cylinder block of the 2-liter engine is cast from an aluminum alloy, the cylinder head is the same aluminum as the sump. The inline four-stroke, 4-cylinder, 16-valve petrol unit has an electronic fuel injection control system. A feature of this motor is the presence of a chain in the timing drive.

In the valve mechanism of the 2.0-liter Focus 2 engine, there are no hydraulic lifters, therefore, the thermal gap must be adjusted manually. Between the camshaft cams and the valves there are cylindrical pushers, the so-called valve cups. It is the selection of pushers with different thickness of the bottom of the glass that the required gap is selected. This is a rather laborious job requiring the removal of the camshafts. Motor characteristics are further.

Ford Focus 2 engine "Duratek" 2.0

  • Working volume - 1999 cm3
  • Number of cylinders / valves - 4/16
  • Cylinder diameter - 87.5 mm
  • Piston stroke - 83.1 mm
  • Power h.p. - 145 (107 kW) at 6000 rpm
  • Torque - 185 Nm at 4500 rpm
  • Timing Drive - Chain (DOHC)
  • Compression ratio - 10.8
  • Fuel consumption in the city - 9.8 liters
  • Combined fuel consumption - 7.1 liters
  • Fuel consumption on the highway - 5.4 liters

Ford Focus III received the same 2 liter Duratec, but the unit received a modern timing system, which added power and reduced fuel consumption. The timing chain remains. A photo of this power unit is below.

The characteristics of the 2-liter Focus engine of the 3rd generation are below.

Ford Focus 3 engine "Duratek" 2.0

  • Working volume - 1999 cm3
  • Number of cylinders / valves - 4/16
  • Cylinder diameter - 87.5 mm
  • Piston stroke - 83.1 mm
  • Power hp - 150 (110 kW) at 6000 rpm
  • Torque - 202 Nm at 4500 rpm
  • Timing Drive - Chain (DOHC)
  • Compression ratio - 11
  • Fuel consumption in the city - 9.6 liters
  • Combined fuel consumption - 6.7 liters
  • Fuel consumption on the highway - 5 liters

Duratec HE 2.0 of the second Focus, differs from the third generation engine by the presence of the Ti-VCT system (variable valve timing system). In addition, the GDI direct fuel injection system appeared. All this made the motor very efficient and reliable.

Has become very popular in its class wherever it is sold. Therefore, the company decided not to wait for it to become completely obsolete - and in 2004 the successor to the Ford Focus II was introduced. He "lived" on conveyors for 6 years as well.

This is a typical representative of the "golf segment", which in Europe is usually designated as class C.

The car came off the assembly lines of factories located in Germany (Saarlouis), Spain (Almusafes), China and Taiwan. In our country, Ford has its own enterprise - in Vsevolozhsk (Leningrad Region), so there was no need to import this model. The exceptions are the ST version supplied from Germany, as well as coupe-convertibles (made by Pininfarina in Italy).

Body

The paint quality is very high, the Focus body is completely galvanized. But after two or three years, in our not the most benign conditions, the chrome trim on the trunk lid rusts - this problem was observed in the previous generation of Focuses, but Ford could not cope with it.

In addition, the wiring leading to the license plate light often decays.

Another common "sore" is the rear door touch lock. It stops opening due to trapped moisture. Therefore, it is necessary from time to time to lubricate the "wrong side" of the Ford emblem, or completely replace the flimsy plastic mechanism with a much more reliable one from Mondeo - it is made of metal.

Appearance of the second Focus

Finding designers. They managed to simultaneously preserve the continuity of generations (that is, it is absolutely clear that this is the Focus, even if you cover the emblem with your hand) and make the car quieter, "intelligent".

Types of bodies:

  • a hatchback with three or five doors;
  • four-door sedan;
  • station wagon;
  • convertible with a retractable hardtop (CC modification).

Sedans were the most popular in our country. They bought less hatchbacks, of which most were practical "five-doors". Station wagons are in last place, not least because of the higher price.

Interior

The salon has also become "more mature" - it no longer has those sweeping lines that its predecessor had. But it cannot be called boring either thanks to strokes like oval vents of the ventilation system. Everything is well tailored and looks nice. The controls are clearly at hand. In expensive versions, the panel is fitted with a "dark wood" or "metal effect" cover, the most modest ones have just black plastic.

Installed a new radio cassette recorder on CDs with many control buttons. We changed the air conditioner unit and the stove with two monitors and many buttons. The tunnel will delight you with two cup holders and a cigarette lighter.

Ford Focus II motors and gearboxes

A type Volume Power Torque Overclocking Maximum speed Number of cylinders
Petrol 1.4 l 80 h.p. 127 H * m 14.2 sec. 166 km / h 4
Petrol 1.6 l 100 h.p. 150 H * m 12 sec. 182 km / h 4

Diesel 1.8 l 116 h.p. 250 H * m 10.9 sec. 193 km / h 4

Engines

  • at the bottom of the hierarchy is a 1.4-liter 80 hp gasoline unit. It is reliable, but weak. Therefore, many drivers often "twist" it "to the fullest", which is why the resource is reduced;
  • The 1600 cc motor (100 hp) made in South Africa is the most popular. Inexpensive, good for low quality fuel. The dynamics are also modest, especially with the "automatic". Has a 115-horsepower version, which is equipped with variable valve timing at the inlet and outlet - it is noticeably more powerful and better "friends" with the automatic transmission;
  • 1.8-liter engine has a capacity of 125 hp;
  • "Senior" in the range of Ford Focus 2 (except for the "charged versions of ST and RS) - a two-liter engine with 145 forces;
  • the only turbodiesel (1.8 liters, 115 hp) was available in our country, and not only in Western European markets. But dealers did not keep such cars in warehouses, but brought them only on order.

In general, motors (both gasoline and diesel) are very durable. Their resource (with proper repair and maintenance) is 300-350 thousand kilometers.

Transmission

The five-stage "mechanics" is the base for all modifications. As an alternative, a middle-aged (but well-deserved) 4-band "automatic" of the classical design (with a torque converter) was proposed.

Travel Focus

The second generation American is built on the C1 trolley. It was also used for cars such as, / and the compact MPV Ford Focus C-Max.

The front (like its predecessor) has McPherson struts. Behind - an expensive multi-link. Its use is driven by the desire to provide a decent level of handling, even on cars with "junior" engines.

Some malfunctions

The problem with a 115-horsepower 1.6-liter engine is the phase shifter clutches. There are two of them, and each costs more than 15 thousand rubles.

For 1800 cc and two-liter engines, after one hundred thousand, the valve cover gasket should be replaced at a price of one thousand rubles - oil can ooze through it. The upper engine mount for 3.5 thousand rubles also rarely "runs" longer.

Turbodiesel is very sensitive to fuel quality - then the fuel pump and injectors travel 200 thousand kilometers. The oil needs to be changed every 5-10 thousand, at least.

On a mechanical box IB5, the fifth gear can fly out (the point is in weak synchronizers). High loads threaten to burst the axle of the satellites in the differential of the second Ford Focus. This, in turn, turns into a punctured crankcase and repairs at a cost of one hundred thousand rubles and even, sometimes, more. Another "mechanic" - MTX75 - is much more reliable. Unless the release bearing needs to be changed after 50 thousand kilometers.

In the front suspension already at 40-70 thousand, support and wheel bearings, as well as stabilizer struts, "fit". The resource of ball joints and shock absorbers is only 40 thousand. Behind the least reliable are the stabilizer struts (40,000 kilometers). The lower levers are enough for a hundred thousand.

The electro-hydraulic power steering on modifications with 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines can "please" with a burned out control board. The part costs 30 thousand rubles. And the rail on cars before 2008 was often changed under warranty.

Secondary market price

The minimum amount of Ford Focus, which will have to pay for the "second" Focus - 150 thousand rubles. These are cars of the first years of production and there is often no living space on them. There are dents, cracks, scratches, traces of terrible body repair everywhere. Corrosion is also present in considerable quantities. Not to mention the fact that immediately after the purchase you will have to invest money in the repair of the Focus suspension, steering and other components.

As an option, the state may be not bad, but there are problems with documents.

And at the bottom of the market there are cars with any type of body (including station wagons) and in any configuration, including the top-end Ghia.

Prices for "restyled" Focuses start from 350 thousand... The year of release, respectively, will not be earlier than 2008

The maximum for this model (if you do not rush to extremes) - 580-600 thousand rubles... This is 2011 (the last for this model), in perfect (according to the owners' statement) condition, with seat covers, a second set of rubber, etc. Under the hood, there will most likely be a two-liter engine paired with an automatic transmission. You can also count on expensive equipment (even with a leather interior).

We have very few coupe-cabriolets, but there is still a chance to find one - for about 550 thousand, with good equipment.

Outcome

The second generation Ford Focus is a reliable and sturdy car. Many of the nodes in it are far from a new design, therefore they have long been devoid of childhood illnesses. There are no problems with spare parts, including a high-quality "non-original". And the main enemy is water-salt "porridge".
