Rust cleaner for electrical contacts. Applying spray for electrical wiring correctly

The modern chemical industry produces a variety of useful solutions for cleaning and protecting electrical contacts from corrosion and oxidation. But do not discount the recipes for such cleaners, as they can also be useful when working with certain devices. This article describes several chemistries available for cleaning and protecting contacts.

Contact cleaners are relatively easy to make at home, and you don't need any exclusive materials.

After any of the above cleaners, you need to move the contacts so that the composition gets into all the meta of the treated surface. You also need to wait about 15 minutes in order for the solvent to evaporate, after which you need to wipe the contacts with a cloth to remove dissolved dirt and excess solvent.

How to make a liquid for cleaning electrical contacts recipe one:

You need to mix the substances in a glass jar, observing the proportions:

250 ml of concentrated aqueous ammonia,

750 ml of methanol (this substance is poisonous) or ethyl alcohol denatured with gasoline.

Store the mixture in a well-closed glass container.

How to make a liquid for cleaning electrical contacts recipe two:

It is necessary to dissolve 20 - 50 ml of vaseline (medical) oil in 950 ml of extraction gasoline. Then you need to mix thoroughly and pour into a bottle.

Composition for cleaning silver contacts:

If it is possible to remove the contacts and place them in the solution, then here's what you can use:

The contacts are first degreased by washing in trichlorethylene, ether or carbon tetrachloride. Degreased contacts are immersed in a bath with 5% potassium cyanide solution (BE VERY CAREFUL THIS POISON !!!). It is recommended to move the parts immersed in the solution (no more than 1 min). If during this time there is no dissolution of the dark layer on the silver contacts, you need to immerse the parts in a new solution (the old one is already saturated).

When the contamination disappears, the silver contact must be rinsed well in running water.

Please note that after such removal, silver is very susceptible to new oxidation! Therefore, your contacts must be placed in a concentrated (25%) pure ammonia solution for no more than 3 minutes (stir the composition continuously). Then it is necessary to rinse well with running water, or in ethyl alcohol, denatured with gasoline or ether and dry well.

After such an operation, the silver contacts will no longer oxidize under the influence of the external environment.

Contact Protective Recipe:

If you need to "preserve" electrical contacts for a long time, then do the following: In a porcelain cup, dissolve at low heat 10-30 g of stearic acid and 980 ml of trichlorethylene (instead of trichlorethylene, you can also use tetrachloromethane or tetrachlorethylene.).

It is necessary to allow the solution to settle and pour into a bottle with a good stopper. This solution has a protective "preservative" effect. Such a solution must be applied to thoroughly cleaned, degreased and dry contacts in a uniform layer.

PS: I tried to clearly show and describe non-tricky advice. I hope that at least something will be useful to you. But this is not all that you can think of, so go for it and study the site.

Contact cleaner allows not only to get rid of dirt and rust on the live parts of the electrical circuits of the car, but also to improve the contacts so that they do not overheat and ensure the reliable operation of the electrical system of the car. Some vehicle contact cleaners also have a preventative effect so that the contacts they have treated are not exposed to further contamination and oxidation.

There is a wide variety of automotive electrical contact cleaners on the market. As a rule, they are realized in two states of aggregation - in the form of a liquid and in the form of a spray. The first type is more suitable for spot treatment, while it is better to spray a large area, that is, several contacts at the same time. However, most sprays come with a thin tube in the package, which also allows you to apply the product in a spot. In addition, with its help you can get to hard-to-reach places.

As for the assortment, it is quite wide, however, ten electronic contact cleaners - WD-40 Specialist, Liqui Moly, Abro, Kontakt 60 and others - are most popular with domestic car owners. Purifier properties and functions

When choosing one or another contact oxide cleaner in the electrical circuit of a car, it is imperative to decide on what properties the optimal product should have. Ideally, a cleaner should:

  • effectively wash away dirt and / or corrosion from electrical contacts, terminal and bolted connections, twists and other elements of the vehicle's electrical system;
  • do not dissolve the varnish coating on microcircuits;
  • to prevent the appearance of stray currents, its leaks, sparking, heating of contacts and improve their quality (usually this is achieved by the fact that the elements included in the contact cleaners fill in the roughness on their damaged surfaces);
  • not contain silicone (or similar insulating compounds);
  • give the motorist ease of use (here you have to choose between a liquid cleaner and an aerosol);
  • dry quickly after application.

Often, automotive contact cleaners can be used in household electrical appliances. However, it is important to take into account what voltage the product is designed for, because the voltage in household outlets is much higher than in the car's electrical system!

The properties listed above provide him with the ability to effectively perform the functions assigned to him, which include:

  • cleaning electrical contacts from various contaminants, dust, dirt, aggressive chemical elements, and so on;
  • protection of contact elements from corrosion (both from water and from chemical, which can occur under the influence of electrolytes, acids and other compounds);
  • effective removal of oxide and sulphide deposits (i.e. corrosion caused by moisture and / or chemical reagents);
  • reducing the electrical resistance of contact connections, that is, preventing their overheating and the load on their external insulation.

Modern manufacturers of contact cleaners offer their consumers both highly specialized (only cleaning) and universal (which, in addition to cleaning, also have protective properties) means.

What and how to handle in the car electrical system

Now that it has become clear which means are best to use to eliminate dirt and corrosion in the places of electrical connections, it makes sense to discuss the question of exactly what problem areas in the car need to be treated with their help. In this case, the information is advisory in nature, and the fact of processing or not processing depends on the state of the contact. That is, it is just a preventive measure. So, using a contact cleaner from oxidation, it makes sense to process:

  • car radio contacts;
  • sensor connectors (knock, MAP in the intake manifold, air and coolant temperatures);
  • limit switches;
  • battery terminals;
  • contact connections of lamps (external and internal);
  • adapter connectors;
  • switches / switches;
  • choke block;
  • connectors and contacts of injectors;
  • connector block for wiring harness;
  • absorber valve contacts;
  • fuse and relay connectors;
  • connectors directly to the electronic engine control unit (ECU).

It is imperative to treat the contacts in the ignition system for preventive purposes, especially if problems are observed in its operation. Both low-voltage and high-voltage contacts are processed.

Do not treat the oxygen sensor connector with a contact cleaner!

The processing of electrical contacts in this case must be carried out in strict accordance with the information given in the instructions or on the packaging. Be sure to read it before using the product, and not after! However, in most cases, the algorithm is traditional - it is necessary to apply a certain amount of cleaning agent to the contaminated contact, and then wait a short time in order to allow the substance to be absorbed. Further, when a chemical reaction occurs and the dirt / corrosion gets wet, you can use a rag, cloth or brush to remove them from the electrical contact surface.

In especially advanced cases (or when the cleaning agent is ineffective), it is possible that the electrical contacts will need to be processed two or even three times. If there is little dirt / corrosion on the contacts, then instead of rags, you can use an air compressor, with which you can simply blow out the soaked mud deposits.

It often makes sense to machine the oxidized (dirty) surface before using a special cleaning agent. This can be done with sandpaper, a brush, or other similar tool. This will save you the expense of the contact cleaner, and therefore money. However, remember that you can do this only if you are sure that you will not harm the electrical contact or other element of the circuit.

DIY contact cleaner

The above means, although they help to quickly and effectively get rid of dirt and / or corrosion on electrical contacts, thereby improving their conductivity, they all have a significant drawback - a relatively high price. Accordingly, it makes no sense to buy to launder a couple of problem areas. Instead, it is better to use one of the "folk" methods and means, of which there are actually many. Here are the most common and effective ones.

Recipe number one... Take 250 ml of concentrated aqueous ammonia and 750 ml of methanol (note, methanol is harmful to the human body) or ethyl alcohol, which is denatured with gasoline. You need to mix these two substances in a glass vessel that has a sealed lid. The composition can be used to clean electrical contacts, and it must be stored closed, away from heat sources and NOT under the influence of sunlight.

Recipe number two... About 20 ... 50 ml of medical vaseline oil should be dissolved in 950 ml of extraction gasoline, and then thoroughly mixed until completely dissolved. The composition can also be used for cleaning. Store in the same way, away from sources of heat and sunlight.

You can also use the following tools to clean the contacts ...

Cleaning paste "Asidol" (one of the varieties)

Eraser... With the help of a regular stationery eraser, especially if it contains fine-fraction elements. However, this method will not work for deeply ingrained dirt.

Baking soda solution... Its composition can be prepared from a proportion of 0.5 liters of water 1 ... 2 tablespoons of soda. With the help of the resulting solution, you can also get rid of simple contaminants (hardly complex ones).

Lemon juice... It is enough to drop a few drops of this composition on the oxidized contact and wait a couple of minutes. After that, it is quite possible to clean it almost to a shine.

Alcohol... For cleaning, you can use technical, medical or ammonia. A fairly effective tool that can be used in tandem with others.

Cleaning paste "Asidol"... It is designed for cleaning various household items "to shine". Therefore, it can also be used to clean electrical contacts.

Sandpaper... It is better to use a fine-grained version of it so as not to damage the contacts.

The listed "folk" remedies usually show good effectiveness in the general case if they interact with low or medium pollution levels. Unfortunately, they are usually unable to cope with multilayer oxides. Therefore, in difficult cases, it makes sense to use a professional tool. But to save money, you can first try to clean the contacts with improvised means, and if this does not help, use the factory electrical contact cleaners listed above.

How and how to clean contacts? Why, in general, do you need processing, protection and lubrication of contacts? We will answer these and other questions in this short article.

It just so happened that the electrical system is a little deprived of attention from car owners and is remembered only when either another lamp has gone into the world of forever extinct things, or when at the most inopportune moment the starter does not respond to turning the ignition key.

It is also worth noting that faulty wiring is the cause of most car fires and this happens instantly and unpredictably.

Therefore, the electrical system, like all other vehicle systems, requires regular maintenance.

Moreover, in our time, this procedure is even more important than before. There are two reasons for this:

  • cars have become literally stuffed with electronics
  • application of engine management systems

Well, the first reason is clear - the more wires, the more potential problems.

Why does the engine management system require special attention?

This is due to the use of lower voltage in the engine control wiring and the use of pulse signals.

The point is that the higher the voltage, the lower the loss.

What do we do? Previously, only 12V was used in the electrical equipment of cars, or, on some, 24V. And now the ECU works mainly with a voltage of only 5V, and some sensors even with millivolts.

Ignition systems have become more powerful and are no longer controlled by the trivial closing / opening of contacts, but by pulses of a certain duration, set by the control unit.

All these low-current circuits must always have a minimum and constant resistance, and they work in constant temperature drops among the oily and dusty air under the hood. Condensation, puddles on the roads, constant vibration and corrosion inevitably make their own adjustments to the operation of the system.

I can say with confidence that the lion's share of all problems in the engine management system is related precisely to the state of the wiring.

And the weakest link in this chain are all kinds of contacts and connector blocks.

How to clean and protect contacts?

All contacts sooner or later begin to corrode and become covered with nasty oxides, disrupting the operation of the system.

Therefore, the question logically arises - how and how to clean the contacts?

It is highly undesirable to clean the contacts mechanically. And in modern systems you can't really crawl to them. Traditional methods with an eraser, soda, and the like do not give the desired result. And I consider the application of these ancient methods in the 21st century to be a struggle against windmills.

I, as a radio mechanic, have long been using modern chemistry in solving these problems. The same chemistry has successfully broken into the automotive industry.

From practice, as for me, two such means deserve special attention.

Grease for electrical contacts

One of them is Contact 61.

And the second is Liqui Moly Electronic-Spray

It is an agent for cleaning, lubricating and protecting all kinds of electrical contacts, both low voltage and high

The price tag of these funds is not quite budgetary - 200ml costs 180-200 UAH. (about 8 American money). But it's worth it, believe me. Moreover, it will be enough for you for a very, very long time.

One processing is enough for at least a year, so once spent an hour of time will give you confidence for the whole year that at the most crucial moment the contacts in the wiring will not let you down.

There is very little information about Liqui Moly Electronic-Spray on the Internet and other sources. Therefore, many have reasonable questions. One of the main ones is whether this device conducts current and will there be no short circuits and leakage currents?

I have been using it for a long time and I can say that it is quite the opposite, it prevents stray currents, current leakage, heating of contacts, arcing, as it improves contact by filling microscopic cracks and roughness on the contacts.

I find use for it wherever possible - car radio contacts, connectors for all kinds of sensors, limit switches, battery terminals, lamp contacts, adapter connectors, switches and switches, ignition system, etc. And that's just in the car! And in everyday life and repair of all kinds of equipment, there are no less applications.

There was a case with a Vaz car. The man asked to see where his car's turn signals had gone. He spent the whole day looking for the problem, he had already replaced the steering column switches, but the problem was still not solved.

In five minutes, I just processed the alarm button with this tool and returned the flashing look to the car Even without replacing the button!

Using this spray is very simple. If the contacts are not very dirty, then we pshik quite a bit on the contacts and plug the connector into place. If the contacts are dirty, then we also pshik and wait until the violent reaction with the release of foam ends and connect everything back. If the contacts are very dirty, then we pshik, wait 10-15 minutes, remove the muddy dirt with a rag or compressed air and repeat the treatment again. But the latter option is extremely rare and usually everything is cleared the first time.

There are separate means for cleaning, separately for lubrication and separately for protecting and expelling moisture. For example, the Contact series has a lot of them, sharpened for a specific task. Kontakt U - rosin and flux cleaner, Kontakt S - contact cleaner from oxides and sulfur compounds, KONTAKT 60 - anti-corrosion protection of contacts, etc.

But KONTAKT 61 and Liqui Moly Electronic-Spray are positioned as universal. So to speak, a budget option.

Their price and properties are almost the same, so decide for yourself what to choose.

Attention! Be careful and always be aware of your actions. In this article, we are talking about a universal contact protection product with a mild cleaning effect! There are products on sale specifically for cleaning contacts. Whether through ignorance or negligence, the sellers do not warn that after the contacts cleaner, contacts must be protected with a contact protection means !!! Otherwise, the contacts "turn green" and the treated surfaces are literally corroded. Including the board in the engine control unit. The car becomes unusable and requires costly repairs. There are already many such cases. Be careful! I mentioned this in the video at the end of this article.

How to clean contacts

First of all, I advise you to treat the knock sensor connector and connectors of other low-voltage sensors.

Attention! I do not advise treating the oxygen sensor connector in this way! The reasons are stated in the article about

Battery terminals.

It is worth noting that there is a special lubricant for the terminals in Liqui Moly Batterie-Pol-Fett tubes. But I only use a spray.

Wiring harness connector block

And, of course, the connector of the ECU itself

You also need to pay attention to temperature sensors - air and coolant, contacts of the camshaft position sensor, generator and starter. Well, and definitely

Separately, I would like to dwell on the elements of the ignition system.

The processing of contacts of high-voltage wires and ignition coils must be done one of the first. Both for prophylaxis, and if dips and twitches appear on your car when you press the gas pedal sharply. The thing is that if there are problems in the ignition system, then they will manifest themselves precisely with a sharp pedaling. This is due to the fact that several factors affect the breakdown voltage, and one of them is pressure.

At idle, the pressure in the cylinders is not great, but at the moment the throttle valve is opened, it rises sharply, increasing the breakdown voltage at the spark plug electrodes. And if there is a defect in the ignition system, then it will certainly show its influence at this very moment. We will talk about this in one of the upcoming articles.

So, one of these defects is often a slightly increased contact resistance in HV wires and, especially, in low-voltage connectors of ignition coils. Moreover, an ordinary multimeter will not show this.

And very often, clearing and protecting contacts helps to correct the situation. Business for three minutes, and the result for the better will be 100%!

Moreover, if the car is more than three years old, then this procedure is simply mandatory.

First of all, we process the low-voltage contacts of the ignition coil. Remove the shoe and apply the spray

Next, we lubricate the high-voltage contacts. To do this, it is not necessary to pour the cleaner into the coil terminals themselves, but it is enough to apply the agent to the HV wire, put it on the coil terminal and twist it slightly back and forth. It is also necessary to hold the wire with the contact upwards so that the spray penetrates deeper - to the junction of the tip with the wire itself

We do the same on the other end of the wire.

I advise you to do this procedure even on new wires and coils.

The same goes for other contacts and connectors. If you install a new sensor or connect a new car radio, apply spray to the contacts without fail. After all, the main task of these funds is not only in cleaning, but also in creating a microscopic protective film on the contacts. This film protects contact from moisture and air, preventing oxidation and corrosion.

And don't forget about fuse and relay mounting blocks. We pulled out the relay, processed the connector and put it back in. Nothing tricky

After these simple procedures, you will definitely notice that the car's behavior has changed for the better! And the engine management system, electrical equipment and ignition system will work easier, which will result in an increased resource of the entire engine as a whole.

Here is a video about handling and protecting contacts

Peace and smooth roads to all !!!

Disconnect the contacts from the power supply. Spray the product onto the contacts and, depending on the level of contamination, leave for about 5-10 minutes. Remove dirt with a cloth, brush or compressed air. If the product comes into contact with lacquered or plastic surfaces, wipe them with a damp cloth. After cleaning, protect the contacts with Elektronik-Spray (art. 3110) or LM 40 Multi-Funktions-Spray (art. 3390). Note: connect to power supply 10 minutes after completion of cleaning.

Let's remember the time when, back in the era of the total deficit of the planned economy, the meager contents of the consumer basket of a simple car owner accounted for not only the inhabitants of the apartment, but sometimes the share of the steel horse, especially if there was an urgent repair in the house. Judge for yourself: the flow in the cooling system was stopped with mustard powder, acidified threaded joints were developed with vinegar essence, and with a piece of simple laundry soap, often with due diligence and certain skills, it was possible to tighten the through damage to the gas tank. It is obvious that such home-grown technologies of that time turned even the smallest repairs into a tedious and often unsuccessful event.

It is another matter in our time, when the abundance of various auto chemical products not only inspires, but also causes a feeling of some confusion even among the most experienced and seasoned motorists. With all this, the range of offered auto chemical goods is growing by leaps and bounds, and exponentially. There are more and more opportunities to speed up and facilitate the repair process without the involvement of professional specialists.

Automotive chemicals are quite logically divided according to their characteristics into two groups: branded drugs and little-known products. Moreover, the division here is not based on the popularity of the name of a particular brand of the manufacturer of auto chemistry, but on the purpose of the drugs themselves. A little below we will conduct a small concise review of automotive chemicals little-known for most readers.

In this review, we'll take a look at some decent aerosol car wiring and electrical care products. The main habitat for these drugs is specialized stores and catalogs for professional repairmen. But this does not mean at all that these funds are too difficult to acquire, and they will be of interest to many.
