Most of the VAZ-Chevrolet SUVs were and are produced with the 2123 engine. The simplest operation on it is to adjust the belt tension. Here we will look at how to tighten the alternator belt on a Chevrolet Niva - by this word we mean the belt of auxiliary units. A separate drive is provided for the air conditioner. But he will not interfere with us.

Check that the ignition is off. After opening the hood, you need to remove the plastic trim, overcoming the resistance of the clips (4 pcs.). Then, taking a screwdriver, loosen the clamp on the main duct (photo 2).

A set of preliminary steps

Using the “10” key, unscrew the fastening screw (photo 3). The screw is removed and then the air duct must be removed from the filter housing. The preparation is complete.

What and how to regulate

Before tightening the alternator belt, three nuts are unscrewed on the Chevrolet Niva. You need to unscrew them by 1-2 turns, but first you need to find each of them.

Nuts are designed for a turnkey "13":

  • The first one is indicated by an arrow in photo 1;
  • The second and third are located near the adjusting screw. They are shown in photo 2.

Adjustment process on the Chevrolet Niva

The screw can be unscrewed with a 13 ”spanner wrench, thereby loosening the tension, or tightened. Turn the key to the left - the tension is released (photo 2).

If the adjustment is correct, pressing the belt at point P (see drawing) causes a deflection of 1.1-1.2 cm. The pressing force should be 75 N.

You can make the adjustment more precisely in the conditions of the service station.

Tighten the fastening nuts with a force of 21-27 N * m. For the screw holding the "sleeve", the recommendation looks different: 20-25 N * m.

Why adjust the alternator belt

The overtightened belt whistles during operation. At the same time, bearing wear goes faster than expected. In addition, the belt overheats and therefore wears out quickly.

It would seem that the tension can be loosened, but an under-tensioned belt wears out even faster. The reason is the increased vibration.

Please note: the cooling system pump "hangs" on the alternator belt. These are the features of the VAZ-2123 internal combustion engine. Stopping the pump does not necessarily cause overheating. But without it, the motor cannot be operated.

Causes of whistling: incorrect adjustment, high degree of wear. Draw conclusions.

From the moment of its appearance and at the time of this writing, all Chevrolet Niva cars were equipped with a single engine model - 2123. This engine is easy to maintain, almost all elements on it can be changed independently with a minimum set of tools. Belt drives are especially easy to adjust. They are installed on the generator and other engine accessories such as air conditioning. Most of them can be changed independently of each other, so the belt of the Niva Chevrolet with air conditioning is changed just as easily as in the simpler version.

Switch off the ignition. After that, open the hood and remove the plastic trim. Then we loosen the duct clamp. To do this, you can use a regular screwdriver.

Then use a 10 socket wrench to unscrew the screw holding the air filter. After that, remove the air duct from the filter housing. At this stage, the preparation can be considered complete.

Adjustment

To start adjusting the Niva Chevrolet alternator belt, you need to loosen 3 nuts. They are not completely unscrewed. 1-2 turns are enough to start further work.

The adjusting assembly fasteners are indicated in the image above and marked with an arrow. To carry out this procedure, you need a key for 13.

The adjustment is carried out with the same key of 13. Turning the screw in the direction of unscrewing it loosens, if it rotates in the other direction, twisting it, tension occurs.

Checking.

A properly tensioned alternator belt on a Chevrolet Niva can be checked by pushing it at the P point indicated in the figure. With a force of 75N, the allowable deflection should be 1-1.2 centimeters.

It is possible to more accurately measure the tension level only in the conditions of a service station where the necessary equipment is available. The same applies to tightening the nuts. The manufacturer recommends tightening with a force of 20-25 N * m. A special torque wrench is used for this.

The need for periodic inspection.

The main feature of the Chevrolet Niva engine is that, in addition to the generator, this belt also drives the cooling system pump. If it is weakened, then over time it may slip and, in addition to the insufficient voltage supplied by the generator, there is a risk of engine overheating as a result of the pump stopping. It also increases the risk of higher wear and tear on the pulleys driven by it due to increased vibration.

An overtightened belt also leads to severe bearing wear. In addition, you can notice a whistle when the engine is running, which indicates that it is experiencing strong friction and, as a result, overheats.

Replacing the air conditioner belt.

To change the belt of the Niva Chevrolet air conditioner, you need to install the car on an overpass or inspection pit. After that, you need to remove the engine protection.

To do this, using a 13 key, unscrew 4 bolts around the perimeter.

Then you can remove the sump protection.

With a head of 8, unscrew the self-tapping screws holding the protection.

Unscrew the front mudguard.

In order to check the tension, you need to push it with your hand between the compressor and crankshaft pulleys. The permissible deviation should be no more than 0.8 centimeters.

If it is worn out, then we proceed to replace it. To do this, loosen the tension roller bolts with a socket wrench.

If the air conditioner belt is in good condition, but loosened, you need to turn the bolt tightening clockwise, this will lead to tension.

Replacement is carried out if there are cracks, traces of delamination and ruptures on the belt. To change, you need to loosen the bolt, for this you need to turn it counterclockwise.

Then it can be removed from the pulley without any problems. On the Niva, a four-strand, 810 millimeters long, is used to drive the compressor.

The belt is worn so that it is closer to the inner edge of the pulley. Then immediately you need to check its tension.

After installing the part, assemble the components in reverse order.

Replacing the alternator belt Niva Chevrolet not regulated by any numbers, but the manufacturer clearly stipulates the timing of checking the integrity of the drive belt. It is necessary to check the condition of the alternator belt every 15 thousand kilometers. If the belt is cracked, loose and oiled, it must be replaced. Another reason for replacement may be the “squeal” of the Chevrolet Niva slipping belt, which does not disappear even after adjusting the tension.

If your Chevrolet Niva has an air conditioner, then in order to get to the alternator belt you will have to remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt... To do this, we drive the car into a pit or overpass and remove the engine protection. We'll also have to remove the front mudguard by unscrewing the screws.

To remove the air conditioner belt on the Chevrolet Niva, we loosen the tightening of the two bolts of the tension roller bracket and loosen the belt tension by rotating the adjusting bolt counterclockwise. We look at the picture below.

The weakened belt can be easily removed by hand.

After replacing the alternator belt, install the air conditioner belt in the reverse order and tension it. To check the belt tension, press with your finger on the belt in the middle between the compressor and crankshaft pulleys. With a pressing force of about 10 kgf, the belt deflection should be about 8.0 mm.

Now let's go back to replace the alternator belt Shnivy... To replace the belt, remove the rubber sleeves for supplying air to the throttle assembly. This will allow you to easily release the tension.

Then, with the "13" head, we loosen the tightening of the three nuts securing the tension roller bracket. Using a key or a "13" head, turn the adjusting bolt counterclockwise, loosening the belt. Remove the belt from the tension roller and other pulleys.

We install the new belt in the reverse order, putting it first on the crankshaft pulley, and lastly on the tension roller. After installation, adjust the belt tension. A diagram of the correct location of the drive belts in the following photo.

To check the belt tension, press your finger on the belt in the middle between the pulleys of the generator and the coolant pump. With a pressing force of about 8.0 kgf, the belt deflection should be about 12 mm. overtightening the belt does not bode well. Not only will the alternator belt wear out quickly, it will also shorten the life of the bearings of your Chevrolet Niva auxiliary units.

  • traces of oil;
  • ruffling.
In addition to an external examination, malfunctions are still possible in the form of an extraneous whistle at the maximum load of electrical circuits or when the battery discharge warning lamp comes on.

Preparing to replace the Chevrolet Niva alternator belt

The new part must be the same type and size as the worn drive. It is advisable not to be stingy and purchase a product of a well-known brand. Required tool:

  • screwdriver;
  • mount;
  • jack;
  • a set of keys.
It makes sense to disconnect the battery terminals to avoid accidental short circuits.

Chevrolet Niva Drive Gear Replacement Sequence

When everything is ready, you can get to work in this order:

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor (CMP) connector.
  2. Unscrew the sensor mounting bolt with a screwdriver and remove the device.
  3. Unscrew the alternator mounting nut by 2-3 turns.
  4. If necessary, unscrew the tensioner roller holder and move it up.
  5. Loosen the drive by moving the alternator towards the cylinder block.
  6. Jack up the right front wheel.
  7. Put direct gear on the gearbox.
  8. Move the belt drive off the pump pulley in the direction of the radiator.
  9. Rotate the jacked up wheel counterclockwise until the part is removed from the pulley.

Installation of a new drive occurs step by step:

  1. Put the Chevrolet Niva alternator belt on the crankshaft pulleys, alternator and partially on the pump.
  2. Rotate the wheel clockwise until it is installed.
  3. If there is a tension roller, put it on and adjust its position.
  4. Tighten the alternator nut.
  5. Install and connect DPKV.

Gear Tension Adjustment Rules

It should be borne in mind that insufficient tension reduces the battery charge level and leads to wear on the mechanisms. At the same time, high tension can cause damage to the unit bearings. The optimal index of belt deflection between the pulleys of the generator and the pump is 10-15 mm with an applied force of 100 N (10 kgf).

The adjustment procedure is:

  • if there is a tensioner, unscrew the bolt of its fastening and, by moving, achieve the desired results;
  • in the absence of a roller, loosen the fastening of the alternator and adjust the deflection index, and then fix the unit.

After driving 500 km, you should once again check the gear tension level and, if necessary, eliminate the non-compliance.

Greetings to all motorists. Today I will talk again about my Shevik, who has recently begun to give me pleasure to mess around with him. Breakdowns rained down one after another, however, they were, as it were, a consequence of each other. You can even trace the chronology here:

As it turned out, the generator jammed and because of it the belt broke. Why did this happen? Most likely (my version) - in the service, when replacing the pump, the belt was overtightened, because we could not pull the same one at all. As a result, during the infernal "tug" the old gene grunted, the bearings could not stand such abuse. Therefore, it is better to do everything yourself or in a trusted service. Well, pull it correctly, you could squeeze the samples with your finger by 1 cm.

How did they even pull on the 1885 belt? I can't imagine))

And today I bought another alternator belt (to replace it), I also bought a new "gene" and installed it. The internet does not even have clear instructions on how to replace the generator, how to remove it, which belt to choose and how to install everything back and correctly tighten the belt on all units. Therefore, I was honored to write down a complete photo and video report for those in need. Go:

First, I'll tell you about the generator

I took the old factory one to the "bulkhead", they completely disassembled it, looked at it and said that it was over. The bearings broke, and the rotor was worn out to such an extent that repairs would cost 2,500 rubles. And the new one costs 3100. Chinese truth, but the warranty is 3 months, we checked it at the stand - everything works the way.

The only thing is that the pulley is a little wider, by 1 trickle, which means you have to tinker with the belt tension - you will need to look, press the belt closer to the generator or further, so that it then stands on the grooves and does not slide out. As it turned out, it was necessary to press close to the gene, like this:

But it was wrong, the strap began to slide off the rollers and whistle wildly, because it did not hit the grooves:

Therefore, take a better native gene with the same roller width and with the correct number of rivulets (grooves). Therefore, the belt is called a ridge belt, because the grooves must match, it turns out something like rails.

I wanted to buy a 100 amp Pramo, but I couldn't find it anywhere in the city, the original genes cost 4000 rubles. So I decided to try Chinese))

How to remove a generator from a Chevrolet Niva

First you need to loosen the belt, which, if pulled, cannot be easily dropped. So, our task is to loosen the tension roller, it is held by a platform with three nuts. You will need a key for 10, it is very desirable to have a ratchet wrench with the same head, preferably elongated, because the third nut is located directly under the belt and it is better to get close to it from the side.

This means - first, we loosen the 3 nuts holding the plate with the tension roller:

The first 2 nuts can be easily removed with an ordinary open-end wrench. But the third is much easier with a ratchet.

Loosened - now we turn the adjusting screw (key 10) so that it moves up the platform as much as possible, so the entire platform with the roller will move freely up and down.

We need to go up to throw off the belt.

We remove the generator itself (in my case, I already put it back) 🙂

We unscrew 2 bolts - at the top and at the bottom, the key is 13, if it turns, then we hold the key at the back by 17 mm.

There will be 2 wires on the back of the gene - one plug, and the second is screwed with a nut and washer to the bolt.

The algorithm is as follows - we loosen the tension roller (3 nuts) - we turn the adjusting screw (so that the belt sags) - we remove the belt itself - we remove the gene.

How to put the whole thing back?

1 - We put the gene as well as removed

2- Throw in the belt, passing through 6 points of tension (in order):

- Pump pulley (top left)
- Tension roller (left middle)
- Main crankshaft (bottom left)
- Power steering gear (bottom right)
- Auxiliary roller (middle right)
- Generator (we finish putting on the strap exactly on the gene, due to the fact that its pulley is the smallest in diameter and is easier to put on)

Important nuances:

If you cannot put on the alternator belt in any, then put the car in 4th gear and quietly push (I don’t remember forward or backward right now, look at where the crankshaft is spinning), then when pulling the crankshaft, it will turn, at the same time pull the belt and it will climb on the last shkif genes. The principle is how to put a chain on a bicycle, I think everyone did this in childhood))

Or you can jack up the wheel and turn it at 4 speeds and tighten the belt at the same time. This is if the strap you bought cannot be put on by hand. Ideally, the hand strap should be put on with minimal effort.

Which belt to take?

The question is also relevant, because I already bought 3, at first I took the same one. They started dressing them - they wouldn't fit into any. Size - 1885, Gates firm. Then I changed it to Luzarovsky (see below)

I went and bought a second one - 1888 mm long - stood up perfectly, but since we were pulling it onto the jammed generator, it began to whistle and smoke when it started. Why? And because the shkif genes should, in theory, spin, but we have it jammed. And we are idiots and did not check)) And the belt on it and scrolled. As a result, the strap was slightly scorched and decided to leave it as a spare.

So personally, the belt came up like this:

Manufacturer Luzar, length 1888 mm! Price - 380 rubles. Now it stands and works fine.
