When candles are poured on an injection engine, then, as a rule, problems arise with starting it. For example, in the evening you returned from work, parked your car and calmly walked home.

Morning comes, you have to go to work, and the car refuses to start. And the starter turns, but there are no signs of even attempts to ignite the fuel composition.

Therefore, a modern car enthusiast must be ready for any surprises and be able to react to them correctly.

By the way, this phenomenon is typical for any type of fuel system (carburetor, injection - this is not essential).

In most cases, the trouble occurs in winter, when it is cold outside. In the warm season, fueling the spark plugs on the injector occurs much less frequently.

So what should you do?

Main reasons

First, let's look at the main reasons for this phenomenon. Surprisingly, but the main source of problems in this case is the car's ECU and the features of its firmware.

When the street is "minus", the system tries to create certain conditions for the fuel mixture. It is no secret that oxygen volumes are much higher in frosty air.

So it turns out that the ECU sends an order to the injectors to give a larger amount of fuel.

Naturally, "orders are not discussed" and the injectors increase the amount of gasoline injected.

What's next?

The accumulator experiences enormous loads in cold weather and may not produce the required voltage level (and there is no guarantee that it is new).

You turn the ignition key, the injectors deliver the required amount of gasoline to the combustion chamber, the starter does everything possible to crank the crankshaft and create a sufficient compression level in the engine.

The candle is trying to work at the same time.

That's right, but the quality of domestic fuel is far from being at the best level.

At the same time, in cold conditions (and even not on a new car), it is not always possible to achieve ideal compression.

The injectors have done their job, the spark plugs are sparking every other time, and the compression level is too low. The result is flooded candles.

How to proceed?

If he fills the candles on the injector, you can go in two ways.

The first is the simplest... Unscrew the candles and dry them well. To "drive" the engine, you need to turn the starter for at least 8-12 seconds. At the end of the work, the candles can be returned to their place and try to start the engine.

Method two... Start-up in the so-called "purge mode".

What to do in this case?

Press down on the accelerator pedal as far as it will go and turn the key in the ignition lock.

Crank the starter for 8-10 seconds. At the end of this time, the pedal can be returned to its original position.

In most cases, the engine will start.

The peculiarity of this method is that when the gas is fully pressed, the fuel supply to the engine is shut off, and the candles themselves are blown exclusively with air.

If the engine still does not start, then it is necessary to dry the candles.

How to do it?

As tools, you can use a regular toothbrush (or metal brush) and a hair dryer (for more effective drying).

If it is possible to take the candles home, then you can “ignite” them in the oven or directly on the stoves. But this method is only temporary.

If the candles have already departed their resource, then it is better to simply change them.

It happens that almost every day he floods the candles on the injector. In such a situation, it is necessary to carry out a complete check of the elements - for the presence of a spark outlet, the cleanliness of the nozzles, the quality of the spark, and so on.

How to act to rule out trouble

  • firstly, you need to monitor the battery charge level and periodically (this is especially true for winter);
  • secondly, monitor the health and if any problems arise, do not be lazy to go to the diagnostics;
  • thirdly, only the best quality, which is suitable for use in winter;

Reasons why gasoline floods candles

In general, the reason for flooding the candles on the injector is simple. And it consists in the particular work of the "electronic brains" of your machine.

In subzero temperatures, certain efforts are required to mix the air-fuel mixture: a lot of oxygen that is in cold air needs a lot of fuel. Accordingly, the ECU sets the task for the injectors to increase the fuel supply, which they perform in good faith.

But the engine does the following, especially if your car is equipped with an old battery. The injectors supply fuel to the combustion chamber, while the starter tries to create the necessary compression in the cylinders, and at the same time tries to give a spark for ignition. We also remember about the quality of fuel, which does not differ in good parameters.

The end result, with perfect compression, in the injector spark plugs are able to start the engine at a minimum impulse, and perfect compression is only available on a new car. That is why it does not flood the injector spark plugs on a new car.

The spark is weak, the compression in cold weather does not correspond to the parameters, and the injectors supply fuel to the combustion chamber, which fills the candles, and they, in turn, simply stop showing signs of life.

What to do when flooding candles

There are two options for solving the problem. The operating book says: if the spark plugs at the injector are filled with gasoline, they must be unscrewed and dried. When the candles are removed, you need to twist the starter for about 10-15 seconds. Put the spark plugs back and start the engine. Such actions are recommended by the manufacturer.

But there is also a proven popular driving method. If your spark plugs are filled with gasoline, before unscrewing and drying them, try starting the engine as follows: purge mode.

On the injector: depress the gas pedal as far as it will go. Using the starter, we crank the engine for 10-12 seconds, after which we release the gas pedal. The car should start. This is because in this way you shut off the fuel supply and blow out the candles with a stream of air.

If the engine does not start, try drying the spark plugs. In an injector, they are no different from those that are installed on carburetor engines. Therefore, we will again use the "old-fashioned" method: we unscrew the candles and clean them from carbon deposits with a metal brush, or a toothbrush, dry them with a hairdryer, either with a gas stove or in the oven. Check the gap, and then screw the candles back into place. After that, the engine should start.

But if the history, when filling the candles, continues to repeat itself every morning, it is necessary to carry out diagnostics: check the candles for the quality of the spark supply, the cleanliness of the nozzles, the spark output from the ignition coil and the Hall sensor.

Conditions under which spark plugs will not be filled with gasoline

Of course, these conditions are ideal, but most of them you have the ability to control so that the car starts in the morning and you can move about your business.

Well, the basic conditions are as follows:
- the battery must be well charged, and the starter must be in good working order
- the oil must meet the parameters for cold seasons
- high voltage wires with spark plugs must be of high quality and serviceable
- it is necessary to timely clean and adjust the injector nozzles. It is better not with the help of various additives in the fuel tank, but with the help of equipment that is used to clean the injectors
- good quality gasoline

People's advice: in order for the engine to start normally in the cold season, and not to flood the candles with fuel, the engine must be “turned” about 1 time a month, having covered a distance of 50-100 km at a speed of 100-200 km / h on quality fuel.

Or once every two days, while driving, for 10 seconds, load the engine up to 4500-5000 rpm, for self-cleaning of carbon deposits and deposits in the chamber.

As you understand, these conditions can be controlled without the help of masters from the car service.

Sometimes a removed spark plug may be wet. This can be caused by gasoline, oil or coolant (antifreeze). Each of these liquids has its own determination methods.

Gasoline can be easily identified by its high volatility. By unscrewing the candle, the gasoline dries quickly. Most often, filling with gasoline occurs when starting a cold engine. It can also happen due to incorrect ignition adjustment.

Oil on the spark plug electrodes may appear due to significant wear on the valve stem seals. Less often, the cause may be wear of the cylinder-piston group of the engine or breakage of oil scraper rings on the piston. Any of these faults require immediate repair.

The amount of oil on the spark plugs can indicate how serious the problem is. When diagnosing, it is best to use a set of new spark plugs recommended by the car manufacturer, as oil droplets are clearly visible on a clean insulator. The first stage is the appearance of small dark specks from the burnt oil. This will not affect the performance of the spark plug in any way, but it will indicate that there are still problems with the engine. The manifestation of the next stage of oil entering the combustion chamber will be wetting the lower thread of the spark plug. This condition of the plug will cause pops in the muffler at idle speed. They disappear with increasing engine speed.

The last stage is full wetting of the candle from below. In this situation, the spark does not form at all. Consequently, a cylinder with such a plug does not work. You can find out about this by regular pops into the muffler, which do not stop with increasing revs. The engine starts to triple.

If oil enters the combustion chamber with 100% serviceable fuel supply and ignition systems, then its combustion occurs at the spark plug electrodes. As a result, the oil does not have time to wet the candle. This is not to say that this is good, but it is not too bad either. In this case, droplets of combustible oil turn into ash. It accumulates on the electrodes, increasing their thickness. When the engine is running, the ash heats up well. This contributes to the further combustion of the incoming oil. It is easy to clean, but it is best to do this at the same time as replacing the valve seals. If you remove the ash from the candle, the oil may stop burning. Because of this, the spark may stop skipping, the candle will flood, and the cylinder will stop working.

Sometimes "craftsmen" use the following methods of dealing with candle flooding: install candles with a shorter skirt or with a higher glow number, increase the spark voltage by putting on high-voltage tips, leaving a small gap. All these methods are short-lived, ineffective, and are dangerous for the condition of the car.

The reasons for the ingress of coolant may be the following: poorly pressed cylinder head, a crack in it or in the liner body, a leaky carburetor heating system. As for the latter reason, it is typical only for Japanese cars.

In practice, it is difficult to determine whether antifreeze enters the combustion chamber, since when the engine warms up, some holes can be closed as a result of metal expansion. Diagnostics must be carried out on a cold engine. This requires starting the car for about 10 seconds. During this time, the candles will not have time to heat up and the cracks will not disappear. On a twisted plug, the coolant looks like dew droplets.

When buying new spark plugs, you should be wary of fakes, as they can damage the entire engine. They can be identified by a curve or uneven inscription, poor-quality processing of the hexagon of the candle, poorly executed packaging.

The problem of filling the injector plugs can also be a faulty operation of the bypass valve in the fuel rail. To check if the bypass valve is working, measure the fuel pressure in the rail. The fuel supply must be strictly under the pressure specified for a particular engine. If the fuel is supplied with low or high pressure, then the candles are flooded.

Injectors are also subject to diagnosis. You should also diagnose the electronic engine control system (ECM) sensor. Since the control unit decides to enrich the mixture or lean it out, if, for example, the coolant temperature sensor (DTOZH) does not work, the control unit receives incorrect temperature data and incorrectly distributes the fuel supply, the injectors begin to overflow fuel. It is also possible that the control unit itself has gone out of service.

The spark plugs are doused with engine oil.

We have already seen that candles can be filled with gasoline or engine oil in carburetor engines and injectors.

If you find that the spark plugs are filled with engine oil, you need to see where the oil is located.

If the oil is in the upper part of the spark plug, at the beginning of the insulator, then most likely the problem is in the valve cover gasket, oil seals.

If the thread of the candle and the electrode are filled with oil, then, most likely, the cylinder-piston pair has worn out, as well as the oil scraper piston rings are out of order. All this leads to the formation of soot, varnish, sludge, coke. Then you have to cleanse, do.

What to do if candles are flooded.

How to start a car if the engine spark plugs are flooded. For the case when the candles are wet from gasoline in the injection engine, unscrew the candles, hold them on fire with pliers (dry them), turn the starter without installed candles for about 10 seconds to ventilate the pistons. After that, the candles are twisted and, as a rule, the car will start.

How to dry cylinders without unscrewing the spark plugs in the injector

Dry the cylinders in this order:

  1. The gas pedal is squeezed all the way to the maximum.
  2. Turn the ignition key and turn the starter for about 10 seconds.
  3. Release the gas pedal.

If the gas pedal is depressed, the throttle valve is open, due to which there is air circulation and the candles are dried.

In this not cunning way, you can start an injection car after filling the candles with gasoline.

If the method of drying without dismantling the candles does not help, then you will have to dry the candles by hand. Manual cleaning is better, since the electrode itself can also be quickly cleaned of carbon deposits and heated over a fire, and check the gap.

Spark plugs are not expensive, those who do not want to mess around and clean them, buy new ones that are appropriate for a given engine.

The service life of spark plugs is from 15 to 25 thousand kilometers.

If simple small-scale repairs and simple actions to eliminate this cause do not help, then it is necessary to carry out deep diagnostics: check the ignition system, ignition coils, injectors, temperature sensor, Hall sensor.

The cylinders must burn a mixture containing gasoline and air in a certain proportion. Excessive enrichment results in incomplete combustion, which causes stalling or unsuccessful start attempts. But if we talk about "injectors", excessive depletion of the mixture leads to the same result. Either of the two factors causes the spark plugs to flood with fuel - black smoke comes out of the pipe, pops are heard ... And in winter, spark plugs on the injector can flood for other reasons: low evaporation coefficient, non-zero water content.

They say that when the candles are "flooded", black carbon deposits are formed. Let's clarify: it should not consist of inclusions. All metal, in turn, will be covered with an oily coating. Dry soot looks different ...

Oily layer and dry carbon deposits

Carbon deposits can also be brown. And it always, in 100% of cases, is formed due to flooding with gasoline.

Dark brown carbon deposits

The oily coating, as in photo 1, is, nevertheless, the result of oil ingress. But an oiled candle does not work correctly - it will also be flooded.

With regular "pouring" carbon deposits are formed, which we see in photo 1 on the right and in photo 2. The rest does not apply to our case.

We are looking for reasons why he fills candles on the injector

Both a lean and too rich mixture will cause the engine to stall. But the ECU cannot be wrong ... The injectors, in turn, can be clogged - everything is clear here. And even in the cold, the valve may not close well due to the formed ice.

Gasoline slick on the water

Conclusion: It is advisable to use fuel with zero water content.The carburetor with water can simply freeze, and each of the four (six, eight) injectors will fill the candles at startup.

The main reasons why the engine fills candles include the following:

  • In winter - the presence of water in gasoline;
  • The evaporation coefficient should correspond to the air temperature (season). There is “summer” and “winter” gasoline. By the way, the specified coefficient has nothing to do with the octane number;
  • Clogged nozzles - the reason for the preparation of a lean mixture;
  • Slow cranking at start is also a common cause;
  • Defective valve stem seals contribute to the presence of oil in the combustible mixture.

With the addition of ferrocene additives, the second reason is aggravated. And the fourth reason is being fought by switching to the use of the "right" oils. The material should not freeze in frost.

How they do it in practice

It is possible to start an injection engine in winter with both winter and summer fuel. It's just that in the second case, the mixture will have to be made lean. The question is how to achieve this ... For example, you can flash a "winter" program. Or do it like this:

  1. The temperature sensor is temporarily disconnected before starting the engine. Instead, a sensor is put on the plug, warmed up in the hands;
  2. We are trying to turn on the starter ... The ECU "thinks" that the engine is warmed up and prepares a leaner mixture than it should be.

If the number of sensors exceeds 1, turn off the one to which two wires go. It is always connected to the ECU.

Low volatility fuels do not mix well with cold air - the mixture is not homogeneous. But if the concentration is lowered, the problem is solved.
