In order for the car to function normally, any consumables should be routinely replaced. These include the timing drive. It is also necessary to make its periodic diagnostics. The drive can be either belt or chain. Here we will talk about replacing the timing transmission on the Chevrolet Aveo 1.2 T250. Here we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the detailed instructions for replacing this consumable.

Timing drive purpose

The belt drive is a rubber hoop. A metal frame is placed inside it, which gives it the necessary rigidity. On the inside of the belt there are teeth, by means of which it meshes with the gears. The purpose of the timing belt is to synchronize the operation of the pistons and valves by connecting the engine shafts.

Pistons and valves are located in the same space, and if the belt breaks, they will meet, which does not bode well. In this case, the valves will necessarily bend, and the pistons will also receive irreparable damage. In addition to them, the cylinders will also suffer. In short, the engine will have to be seriously repaired. To prevent this, it is sometimes necessary to diagnose the condition of the belt so as not to miss the moment of its final wear.

But what symptoms will indicate that it is high time to replace the belt with a new one:

  • the surface of the belt looks clearly worn, cracks, chips and other similar defects are found on it;
  • the teeth no longer look fresh, they are worn out;
  • peeling of the material from its base has been outlined;
  • the ends are loosened;
  • oil stains were found on the belt surface.

The presence of oil on the belt indicates that the oil seal has begun to leak. So it must be replaced. Otherwise, the oil will continue to get onto the new consumable, which, of course, will very quickly disable it, as the oil corrodes rubber. In addition to the belt and oil seals, it is necessary to replace some more consumables. These include the tension roller. But if its appearance still inspires confidence, then you can not do this for now. But if it is scratched or chipped, then it is better not to risk it, but to change it along with the belt.

We change the belt ourselves

The manufacturer clearly regulates the timing of belt replacement - after 50,000 km. If you cannot rely on your knowledge, invite a specialist and he will determine whether it is necessary to replace the belt right now or it can still serve.

If you still decide that the drive needs to be replaced, go to the store and buy new consumables there - belt, oil seals, rollers (if necessary). But what tools should be prepared for repairs:

  • required keys and heads;
  • crank;
  • nippers;
  • a set of screwdrivers with different types of tips;
  • jack.

To make the work more comfortable, the car should be placed on an overpass or lift. All work can only be done when the engine has cooled down. Remember to secure the vehicle. Don't neglect safety issues.

Sequencing

1. First, power off the car. To do this, disconnect the left battery terminal.
2. Dismantle the air filter casing and air duct. Thus, we will provide access to the necessary nodes.
3. Disconnect the air intake sensor.
4. Remove the power unit bracket by slightly lifting the car.
5. Dismantle the wheel on the right, and with it the motor protection.
6. Remove the engine mount by unscrewing all fasteners.
7. Now fix the flywheel with a flat screwdriver. We unscrew the bolt securing the crankshaft pulley. Prepare for the fact that it will not work quickly, and you will have to try.

8. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
9. Dismantle the tension roller together with the generator drive. Carefully inspect the removed parts and, based on this, decide whether to replace them.
10. Now remove both timing shrouds - first the top and then the bottom.
11. Now we need to turn the crankshaft pulley so that the mark on it aligns with the slot on the lower timing case. In order for the pulley to turn easily, you need to screw on the bolt of its fastening. You do not need to screw it in completely.

12. In the same way, align the mark on the crankshaft pulley with the slot on the bottom of the timing case.
13. Scroll the water pump clockwise. To do this, you will have to unscrew all the necessary bolts.
14. Dismantle the belt drive.
15. Remove the tension roller by unscrewing all the bolts securing it.
16. We put a new video in its place.

17. It is possible that it will be necessary to dismantle the pump for water supply. To do this, remove the plastic protection and camshaft sprockets (intake and exhaust).
18. When the pump has already been replaced, replace the removed sprockets.
19. We stretch the new belt drive.

20. Scroll the water pump clockwise, thereby tightening the belt. In this case, the mark on the rollers must be aligned with the mark on the tensioner mount.
21. Once again we check the correctness of the alignment of all marks. We make adjustments if necessary.
22. If everything fits together, we begin to reassemble the mechanisms.

After finishing the work, we start the car and listen to the engines. If extraneous noise is found, the procedure will have to be repeated. Making repairs on your own, you will not only be able to save a lot, but also get the experience that every motorist needs so much.

Video

To ensure the reliability of the vehicle and extend the life of the vehicle, it should be regularly inspected and replaced with consumables. The regulated procedures include the replacement of the Chevrolet Aveo timing belt. The article provides detailed instructions for replacing, and there is also a video that demonstrates this procedure.

What is a timing belt for?

- a rubber rim with a metal frame inside. This part connects the crankshafts and the camshafts, thus synchronizing the movement of the valves and pistons.

It is especially important in the gas distribution mechanism, where valves and pistons are located in the same space. In this case, he does not allow them to meet. If the belt breaks, pistons hit the open valves. This causes the valves to bend and the pistons to deteriorate, leading to costly repairs. This is true for Chevrolet Aveo cars with engines of 1.2 and 1.4.

To avoid high costs for repair work, you need to monitor the condition of the timing components and replace worn parts in time. The belt drive requires replacement if found:

Together with the strap, the tension roller and the pump are changed if scratches, chips, or backlash are found on them. Oil traces on the surface are usually caused by worn oil seals, in which case they must be replaced.

We change the belt ourselves

The timing for replacing consumables is indicated in the Chevrolet Aveo instruction manual. According to the manufacturer's recommendations, the toothed strap should be changed every 50,000 km. The resource of high-quality products is large, so it is better to make a decision on replacement after a visual inspection.

Necessary tools

To carry out the replacement, you need to prepare: purchase consumables and prepare a set of tools, which includes:

  • a set of keys and heads;
  • crank;
  • pliers;
  • phillips and flathead screwdrivers;
  • torque wrench;
  • jack.

Repair kit for Chevrolet Aveo

For comfortable operation, the car must be installed on an accessible device: a lift, a viewing groove, an overpass.

Perform the procedure on a cold engine. For safety, the car must be parked on the handbrake and the wheels must be locked so that the car does not roll.

Stages

The sequence of actions when replacing the timing belt on the Chevrolet Aveo is as follows:

  1. First of all, you need to de-energize the car by removing the negative terminal from the battery.
  2. To provide access to the work site, it is necessary to dismantle the air filter housing and air duct.
  3. Then you need to turn off the intake air sensor.
  4. Next, raise the car a little with a jack and unscrew the power engine bracket.
  5. Then you need to remove the right front wheel and the front engine protection.
  6. Next, remove the right support of the power unit and the pillow by unscrewing the fastening bolts and nuts.
  7. Using a flathead screwdriver, fix the flywheel, then unscrew the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt.
    We fix the flywheel from turning

    In this case, you need to make some effort. You can use the WD-40 to make it easier to twist.

  8. When the securing bolt is removed, the crankshaft pulley can be removed.
  9. Next, remove the alternator strap and tensioner roller. The removed parts should be inspected. If they are defective, they must be replaced.
  10. Having unscrewed the mounting bolts, first dismantle the upper and then the lower cover of the timing mechanism.
  11. Next, you need to tighten the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt and, turning it clockwise, it is necessary to align the mark on the pulley with the slot on the bottom of the timing case.

    Alignment of marks on the pulley and casing

  12. Similarly, the marks on the camshaft pulley and the upper part of the casing of the gas distribution mechanism are aligned.
  13. Now loosen the mounting bolts on the water pump. To loosen the belt tension, turn the pump counterclockwise.
  14. Remove the timing belt.
  15. In the next step, we unscrew the tensioner roller mounting bolt and remove the tensioner roller.
  16. Install the new tensioner pulley in its original place.

  17. If necessary, we change the water pump. To do this, you need to dismantle the gears of the intake and exhaust camshaft, as well as the plastic protection.
  18. After replacing the pump, install the plastic and the removed gears in place.
  19. Next, we tighten the new timing belt.

  20. The tension is adjusted by turning the water pump clockwise. In this case, the pointer on the tensioner roller must match the mark on the tensioner mount.
  21. Check all the alignment marks again. If they do not match, we repeat the installation.
  22. If everything is ok, start the assembly in the reverse order. At the same time, we tighten the bolts to the torque specified in the Chevrolet Aveo manual.

After completing the work, you need to start the car and listen to how the engine works. If no extraneous sounds are heard, then the replacement was performed correctly. Thus, you can save on visiting a service station by learning how to change the timing belt on the Chevrolet Aveo.
