It so happened that over the past two years, my family has become the owner of two completely new and very similar cars: one Skoda Fabia,

second Volkswagen Polo Hatchback.


Considering this incredible coincidence, some of my friends, and even sometimes acquaintances young ladies periodically ask me questions of the following content: Well, how? What's better? What is comfortable to ride? Is maintenance expensive? How does the suspension behave, how often something breaks, etc.
I am not at all an expert in car marketing, but I am very well versed in the structure and nuances of both of these cars. Therefore, below is my personal view of both cars and an attempt to answer the most frequently asked questions.

So two almost identical cars produced at different factories belonging to the same concern - VAG. The platforms are the same, i.e. suspension design, engine range and many other parts are identical. However, the Skoda is 30 cm longer. Accordingly, there is much more space in the back for passengers, and the Skoda's trunk is much more spacious. The salons are also very similar, but again at Skoda, with the absolutely identical design of the front seat adjustment system, the adjustment possibilities are somewhat more. With my height of 187 cm, I never managed to find a comfortable driver's seat setting in VW, in Skoda it turned out, one might say, from the very first time. And the side supports for the Skoda seats are much more comfortable. The quality of the plastic in the interiors of both cars, I will call high, in cars of the same class in which I happened to drive, such as the Chevrolet Lacetti or Lanos, the plastic is much worse and rattles. Music - in both cars factory audio preparation. Skoda with the factory radio sounds (subjectively) very good. In Volkswagen, a Sony radio tape recorder with an active 7-inch screen was bought, the amplifier in this radio tape recorder is of very low quality, the sound is bad - "like a bucket." Better when choosing a more expensive and seemingly simpler "factory" BlauPunkt. The soundproofing of the interior of the Volkswagen is noticeably better than that of the Skoda.

Engine and suspension: Skoda has a 1.4l four-cylinder, VW 1.2 has a three-cylinder. Both vehicles have a 5-speed manual gearbox. Last year I drove both cars both in the city and on long trips. I didn't notice much of a difference. Fuel consumption is about the same, around 7.8 liters in the city, less than 6 liters per hundred kilometers "on the highway". I noticed one feature, sometimes it seems that a Polo with a lower engine power when picking up speed from 80 to 110 behaves faster than a more powerful Skoda. The explanation is in the gear ratios in the gearbox that were apparently better matched to the 1.2 liter motor. The suspension of both cars is "indestructible", it was tested many times in the Vologda region on local federal unpaved (gravel) highways. Skoda has no faults found for a run of 50 thousand in 2 years, VW will think about 15 thousand (first MOT) too - everything is like a "tank". Both cars are equally great at high speed even on uneven roads and bumps, as well as on the "washboard". Volkswagen's suspension is a bit stiffer. VW in corners "chatters" a little on slippery roads - it affects that it is shorter than Skoda by 30 cm.

Prices: both cars cost almost the same Skoda - 605 thousand rubles, VW - 550 thousand rubles (without a radio tape recorder, rugs and mud flaps). But Skoda is in a much richer configuration: heating of everything and everyone, parking sensors, electric mirrors and all 4 glasses in the cabin, cruise control and a lot of all sorts of pleasant little things, such as a leather steering wheel. VW for this money is almost "empty": front power windows and headlight washers are optional. The prices for servicing both cars are the same - 15,000 km (TO1) - 5600 rubles, 30,000 km (TO2) - 9600 rubles, 45,000 km (TO3) - about 7000 rubles, no extra. they did not do maintenance work with both machines. If we compare with Nissan Tiida, friends who also travel to the Vologda region and who paid 30,000 rubles at the 1st TO (10,000 km), then Skoda and VW have everything very cheap. In Skoda, at the 3rd MOT under warranty, the leashes of the wipers were replaced, their coating "got out", but this is an exclusively aesthetic repair. At VW, by the 1st TO, the windshield washer motor stopped working, diagnostics - 2000 rubles, replacing a blown fuse - 500 rubles. But this is on the conscience of the dealers. In general, employees of Volkswagen dealers in St. Petersburg are distinguished by their rudeness and impudence. But this is a separate story. Skoda employees, on the contrary, are helpful and polite. Moreover, this can be traced in completely different car dealerships.

Bottom line: if you choose between VW and Skoda, then of course I will choose Skoda. If you choose among VW, Koreans, Japanese and French - then definitely Volkswagen. He is the best. With the "Germans": Audi A1 and A3, BMW 1-series VW, I think it's pointless to compare, these cars are much more expensive and more interesting.

Yes, I do not consider VW Polo sedans, I generally think that a "polo" class car and a sedan are incompatible things and such sedans are created exclusively for people who have not survived socialism. Confirmation of my words is that Polo sedans are officially sold only in the post-Soviet space.

Probably, according to the established tradition, I'll start with the agony of choice, or why is it Skoda Fabia. Do not think that I was the initiator of the purchase of a second car only from the VAG family, I did not consider this concern at all, on my part Renault Sandero Stepway was offered, it seemed to me that the second car should be a car that is at least slightly higher in terms of ground clearance than our current octave. In the summer we go into the forest and the clearance plays a role, but the steppe has it decently more than many cars, in addition to everything, it also has a decorative body kit, which, as it seems to me, gives the car a good appearance. Another of the important factors in favor of Renault was its all-consuming suspension, in the depths of which the realities of our roads and directions were dissolved, I myself drove several times in a Sandero as a passenger and I really liked how it rides on a comb and small irregularities. Perhaps, of the minuses, only high gas mileage can be noted, but they say that it pulls at the bottom.

Hello everyone! A year has passed since the purchase of the Fabia, and it seemed to me that it would not be superfluous to drop a few lines about it.

I'll start with the body, even when driving from the car dealership to the house, I noticed that all the dirt brushed off the windshield brushes flows to the side just at eye level, thereby interfering with a full view, I immediately decided that I would buy visors. In winter, there were no problems with the view, and there was nothing to complain about, with the arrival of summer, I bought and pasted those same visors, there is undoubtedly benefit, but only from the fact that in the rain you can slightly open the window and water will not get inside the cabin, on the track, all the dirt still falls on the side window, but now just above eye level. Based on this, I can safely say that the engineer who was engaged in design is, to put it mildly, a mediocre personality, for the same golf + the windshield is, as it were, recessed into the struts and the dirt, in theory, should rise along the edge of the forehead onto the roof, and then let it flow anywhere, the main glass lateral clean, I saw something like this on some models of the Merc, I don't have this on the octave, but I have no complaints either. In general, there is a minus on the Fabia body.


So, the Czech subsidiary of the VW concern - Skoda has launched on sale a new generation of its successful small passenger car. This is a completely new Fabia. Last year, the previous generation Fabia was already losing out on the market to brands such as Polo, Corsa and Fiesta. It still remained number 4 in sales in Germany. This is an excellent result given Fabia's considerable age.

The new Czech subcompact claims to be the leader in its class. How substantiated are her claims?

Now everything can change dramatically. The Eastern European machine is entering the market not only with a new design, but also with a more modern technical filling. Already in 2007, Fabia received something that her brother Polo can be proud of only in 2008.

This is the newest car among competitors. The new generation VW Polo will appear only in a year and will technically repeat the Fabia in many ways

However, the little Fabia still has rival enemies: the brand new Peugeot 207 and Opel Corsa! Polo, on the one hand, is, of course, more prestigious and made in Germany, in Wolfsburg, but on the other hand, this VW was released in 2001 and is significantly outdated. True, the German public still enjoys incredibly high demand for it.

Major European competitors were updated a year and a half ago

Skoda opposes its competitors with the increased body size and, accordingly, the interior. Externally, the new Fabia is a mix of Mini and Suzuki Swift. It now boasts a striking, trendy and dynamic design.

All four test cars are equipped with 1.4L engines ranging from 80 to 90 hp.

Yes, the Polo is taller, there is more headroom, but Fabia has more space in the back row, which can be very important for some! Peugeot, despite the longest base at 2.34 meters, is the champion for lack of knee room for rear passengers.

Transportation of goods? For Fabia, this is an easy exercise. None of these kids are able to swallow more suitcases. Less is included in 207. But the transformation of the Peugeot's interior is more convenient. Already in the basic configuration, the rear row of seats folds down. The Fabia and Corsa can also do it, but only in certain trim levels. Polo even in the basic version can get such a back row, but for an extra charge!

Luggage compartment volume Corsa from 285 to 1100 liters. In general, the capacity of the trunk has clearly improved compared to the previous Corsa: now a horizontal division of the trunk into compartments of different sizes is available. But the main miracle is that Korsa can get double sex! If you need, for example, to transport two bicycles without taking up the trunk space, then the following "trick" will help you: a small pallet with mounts for just two bicycles is pulled out of the rear bumper!

Skoda still has a solid, well-assembled interior. Finishing materials are worthy of the price that will have to be paid for Fabia. The driver's seat resembles the Astra, but looks less strict, more orderly. And on some versions it is even brighter, thanks to the spectacular variegated colors prevailing in the decoration. The modular (!) Middle console looks especially interesting, which can be equipped at will with various equipment, such as a Bluetooth phone, a DVD player and a digital radio. For each configuration, the salon can be ordered with different finishes, paint combinations. However, Skoda's meager basic configuration contains nothing but one airbag, audio preparation, an immobilizer and a power steering wheel adjustable in two planes. All!

He also takes turns the best

The ergonomics of the Polo's workplace are, as always, at a high level: functionality, high quality and simplicity are the foundations of VW's philosophy in interior design. True, many "folk" Polo will seem too boring inside - especially in comparison with competitors.

Opel and Peugeot look more interesting inside. However, the Corsa has drawbacks - the driver's workplace is overloaded, visibility is clearly not up to par. Salon 207 is very friendly, expensive, ergonomically verified. There is only one miscalculation: the French could have placed the air conditioner regulators higher.

In terms of comfort, all four are about the same. The 207 still transmits fewer jolts and jolts to the cabin. Opel is similar to Peugeot, in general it copes with the problems of our roads with dignity. Only on very bad sections of Korsa do the front and rear axles grumblingly rumble. On well-groomed asphalt belts, the Corsa glides calmly and confidently. Polo and Fabia street cracks and other "small joys" pass with equanimity. And yet VW and Skoda sometimes miss light blows and report to their passengers about roadbed problems in more detail.

But the little Skoda on its 16-inch wheels at any time sharply attacks the corners, allowing itself only small heels. Opel and Peugeot beckon with excellent driving characteristics and encourage a dynamic driving style. The pleasure of both is overshadowed by the work of the power steering. Both react less directly to sharp course corrections than the Polo and Fabia.

However, the Polo is still in demand in Germany..

The interior is rather boring and primitive. However, materials and build quality are up to the mark

Inside, the Polo is inferior to the Fabia in both rear seat space and trunk volume.

A solid plus of Fabia is the presence of ESP even in the database. The other 3 babies do not have this. Where on Fabia you will pass calmly and quickly - the electronics will hedge - Polo, Corsa and, above all, 207 require a special approach and high driving skills.

This, however, is in very dangerous turns! But it's not just the lack of ESP from other competitors of the Czech Fabia. These are not all problems. The Polo and Corsa disappoint with their stopping distance of around 41 m: very weak. 207 better - 39.6 m, Fabia is the record holder among rivals - 38.4 m.

The new Opel Corsa appeared a year ago and immediately won many fans with its energetic design, especially in the three-door version.

The test cars have motors from 80 to 90 hp, paired with a five-speed mechanics. Despite the most insignificant power (80 hp), the light weight of the Polo (1065 kilograms) allows it to move nimbly and reach a hundred faster than anyone! Its contenders lose about one second when accelerating to 100 km / h. The Corsa and 207 seem to be the slowest. The somewhat faster Fabia delighted us with its sonorous sound and precise gearbox operation. Although the spent 13 seconds to 100 km / h clearly does not make Skoda a champion in acceleration dynamics.

The Rüsselsheim resident's suspension is not the same as the Polo / Fabia and is best suited for driving on a good road

The range of engines directly supplied to us by Fabia covers 3 gasoline engines, with a volume of 1.2; 1.4 and 1.6 liters and a power spectrum from 69 to 105 hp. The gearbox is available in either a manual 5-speed or 6-speed automatic.

The Opel driver's seat looks somewhat congested. Despite the Corsa's clear sporting ambitions, the steering wheel behaves rather sluggishly in the center position.

Fabia can be purchased in Russia at prices ranging from $ 12,999 to $ 20,690. In the tested configuration - from 16 thousand dollars.

Outcome: new Fabia makes a well-founded claim to leadership in its class. It's spacious, rides well and looks modern. Of course, the new Skoda design will seem controversial to some, but in any case it is much better than the first generation of the hatchback. Now already Polo seems hopelessly outdated, cramped, and disproportionately expensive. 207 , which appeared on the market a year and a half ago, looks the most stylish, although it is inferior to the Germans in dynamics and spaciousness in the back seat. On the other hand, no one has positioned cars of this class as family vehicles. In addition, this is the only car that has a folding rear sofa in the base. The new one looks very worthy Corsa, however, visibility was sacrificed for design, and the engine was the flimiest in torque.

Despite the largest wheelbase, the second row of the 207 is rather cramped.
