Judging cynically - only in terms of money - the station wagon puts the Cross on its shoulder blades with an advantage of 116 thousand. The "off-road" option is not cheaper than 755,900 rubles, while the SW is available for 639,900 - only 32 thousand more expensive than a sedan of the same filling. But there is a caveat: "Cross" is not yet released in available trim levels, the price list starts immediately with the highest performance Luxe. And SW starts with Comfort, where there are no side airbags, foglights, a double boot floor, heated windshield, light and rain sensors, climate control ... On the other hand, a person hardened by "Zhiguli" will safely classify all these things as excesses. And for a comfortable life in "Comfort", even against the background of foreign cars, there is a lot: a pair of pillows, a stabilization system with ABS and traction control, steering wheel tilt and reach, central locking with a folding key, heated seats, electric windows in a circle, air conditioning, music and even cruise control. Therefore, the first point is sent to the more affordable, but not poor SW.

The difference in billing persists because the cargo compartments are completely identical. But for the trunks, both Vestas receive two points. He could hardly restrain himself not to add three. After all, the domestic auto industry has never done anything like this. Finally, they started thinking about people! Even Skoda will envy such a competent organization of space with its Simply Clever solutions. Both Ladas are full of hooks, nets, an outlet, lighting, a secret compartment in the wall on the right, a tray for rags and other little things. And most importantly - Russian know-how: a special pocket for a five-liter bottle of water or a canister with a washer. They are proposed to be placed in a convenient niche on the port side and fixed with an elastic strap. Even if you put eggs in the trunk: with such a fixation, nothing will fly and break against the walls. There is only one problem - there is not enough space. The unification of the floor with the sedan did not allow squeezing more than 480 liters from the station wagon (like in a four-door). And this is taking into account the "two-story" underground: an organizer around the 15-inch spare wheel and removable trays above it. Even in the five-door “Vesta” there is no hatch for long cars, and the backrest of the back sofa, divided in a ratio of 40:60, cannot fold into the horizon.

Vesta SW is not a puzoterka: 178 mm under the steel protection of the power unit is a normal option for Russia. And Cross is even more versatile. Under a flat belly, he has as much as 203 mm. Vazovtsy did not embellish it, the body was really lifted to a new height - an impartial tape measure confirmed. For comparison, popular crossovers like the Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan or Ford Kuga have real ground clearance of about 180 mm. Only the Cross will not have all-wheel drive yet. And coupled with the road tires Pirelli Cinturato P7 205/60 R17 (for SW - Matador Elite 3 195/55 R16), these are the main limitations on flotation. But as long as there is enough grip and geometry, the Cross crawls forward. What we saw for ourselves when the clumsy standard navigation led us to a very rough dirt road, where, as a colleague recalled, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV was recently tested. Raised "Vesta" slid down the slope, jumped over the boulders, took a mud ford and stumbled only on a damp rise, pitted with ruts. On the way back, Cross had to be slightly pushed up the hill, but most importantly, we got out. The off-road exam is passed, get a point in the piggy bank.

With the exception of the front bumper, the plastic "Cross" body kit is natural, unpainted. Perhaps motors are the weakest point of the new station wagons, we fine both cars by one point. We don't know how the SW and Cross behave with the base 1.6-liter 106-horsepower VAZ-21129 "four" - they were not brought for a test drive, but the Vestas with the flagship engine, to put it mildly, did not please. The new VAZ-21179 unit seems to have a solid volume - 1.8 liters, and a decent power - 122 hp, the torque due to the phase shifter at the inlet is quite good - 170 N ∙ m. But at the very least, all this works only on the plain. And when we went deep into the mountains from the Sochi coast, the Vesta became completely sluggish: the engine was empty at the bottom, it was sad at the top, the middle was so-so - no matter how fast you kept it, sometimes the car, not only did not want to accelerate on the slopes, demanded to switch down ... It is doubly stressful to crawl along the lane - you have to play with the clutch. As a result - consumption under 12-13 liters of 92nd gasoline. Below 9 liters, the onboard computer did not show at all for the entire time. But the station wagons are only 50-70 kg heavier than the sedan ... By the way, according to the VAZ logic, SW is a Sport Wagon. Sounds like a wicked irony. Well, at least the 1.8 engine no longer suffers from detonation, other childhood illnesses also seem to have been cured, but in the morning the cold engine still upset a couple of times with unexpected traction failures.

The Vesta station wagon is a quiet car. Tires, motor, wind are heard about the same, the noise does not press on the ears. And "crickets" in the hard plastic of the interior do not squeal even on a primer. I would like to believe that the details will not loosen over time and the front suspension will not knock, like on the sedans of the first releases

The main "transmission" trouble of the five-door "West" is the lack of a normal automatic transmission. True, VAZ employees swear that customers have learned how to handle the obstinate robot AMT (2182) and do not express any complaints about it. But it seems to us that only those people who have never driven a car with a good automatic transmission say so. The skills of the five-speed robot "Lada" are best illustrated by the acceleration figures to "hundreds": automated station wagons 1.8 take an indecently long time - 12.9-13.3 s, while with mechanics the numbers are much more optimistic - 10.9- 11.2 sec Manual gearboxes, by the way, are different: Vestam 1.6 is equipped with a domestic transmission 2180, and modifications with 1.8 - a French JR5. And we liked it: it switches quite clearly, easily, does not buzz or howl. But in general, there is nothing to accrue points here, the score in the battle remains the same.

An armrest with a box appeared between the front seats (useful, but it interferes with fastening and shifting gears), the seat heating is now three-stage, the glove compartment lid with a microlift, and the heated windshield is turned on with a separate button. These things are coming to the sedan soon.

For the SW wagon, engineers have defined special rear springs in order to adapt the chassis to different stiffness and weight of the five-door body. Therefore, on the road, this version resembles a sedan. It lays just as tightly, with excitement it turns into a turn under the gas discharge and pleases with a lively response to the steering wheel turns. Never before have Russian station wagons driven so "tasty". But the high Cross turned out to be even more interesting! VAZ employees chose a difficult, but correct way to increase the clearance - they completely replaced the springs and shock absorbers, expanded the track by 14 mm, spending a lot of time fine-tuning the driving performance. As a result, the "off-road" version did not become more rollable, retained an acceptable smoothness on low-profile 17-inch wheels, and even won in handling: the "Cross" has a cleaner steering wheel, richer effort on it, the car is more stable on an arc in a turn. Only the edging of the instrument dials was painted red in vain - the numbers are hard to read. But still Cross deservedly takes the lead in points. A small note: on the serpentine hairpins, the front tires of the Cross were rubbing against the support cups of the suspension springs. We hope this is a single problem in our car, as well as the decorative engine cover that came off the mounts ...

The fact that Russia is historically a country of sedans is known to everyone, as well as the fact that recently the fashion has switched to crossovers, and it seems that this is not bad, but does everyone need a "medium scary" raised station wagon (or hatchback) called a crossover when on the market appeared the beauty Lada Vesta SV? The ground clearance even for the regular version is 178 mm, Creta is only a centimeter higher, and the Vesta SW Cross version does have an impressive 200 mm under the body, but we will return to this choice very soon when reviewing the cross version of Vesta, and now we will focus on sedans.

People, why do you need a sedan? That's really, after a pickup and a convertible, the most uncomfortable body type. And do not talk about "prestige", what is the prestige in a budget sedan? Here in the Mercedes-Benz S-class there is prestige, but not in Solaris.

What to buy instead of a sedan? Station wagon! He is useful even when ugly, and if handsome, then the choice is obvious.

Just look at our experimental, this is the most beautiful Lada ever! And then they kept repeating about Togliatti, that the place is damned ... It's a normal place, if you work properly.

Thanks to Steve Mattin for the design: a floating drop roof is a rarity in the budget segment, and this move seriously sets the car apart and increases its price in the eyes of consumers.

There are changes in the interior of the car compared to the sedan: a comfortable armrest with a box appeared on the first row, the instruments have new scales, but the second row got more attention. Then there was an opportunity to proudly sit with my head up, the ceiling became higher and even with a height of 188 cm I can sit comfortably, even if I sit behind myself, everything is fine in the sedan in Vesta's legroom. Another of the joys of the second row is the heated seat, USB input for charging devices, a 12-volt outlet and a very comfortable armrest with two cup holders. Heating should soon appear on the sedan, but the space above your head will not appear for sure.

Let's move on to the fun part - the trunk. VAZ employees did not promise a record volume, but they did promise unprecedented usability for the class. And they didn't cheat. There is a double floor with two organizers, hooks for bags, fasteners for a net, a specially designated place for a washer canister! There is also a very convenient luggage rack with rails on the sides, even in cars whose cost is five times the cost of our sample, this is not always the case.

Of the minuses of the trunk, the volume can be noted, it is only 480 liters, like in a sedan, but using these liters is much more convenient.

Since the car is not just a beautiful thing, but also a means of transportation, it's time to go.

For the test, we got a version with a 1.8 liter engine. 122 h.p. paired with a Renault manual transmission. Much has been said about how the Vesta sedan behaves on the road, in short, it drives very well. Both on good roads and on bad ones. With a station wagon, the situation is the same, despite the extra pounds, handling did not suffer, the car also willingly "dives" into turns, "floats" irregularities and "stands" on a straight line. Separately, competitors have these qualities, for example, Logan is the king of dirt roads and broken asphalt, the Polo sedan is good on a flat road, and Vesta feels good everywhere.

There are complaints about the dynamics of the car, from the 1.8 liter engine. you expect more "agility", and he rides like competitors with 1.6 liter engines, but does not forget to eat for the entire volume. With a dynamics level of 10.9 s. in acceleration to 100 km / h, a consumption of 11.6 liters per hundred is too much.

It is impossible not to mention the fat minus in the form of a robotic gearbox with one clutch, it is not convenient to operate and is slow, here Lada has nothing to oppose to competitors' machines. So, choose the mechanics, they are from Renault and works well.

Let's move on to the most important thing - prices. The basic station wagon Lada Vesta SV with a 1.6 liter engine. 106 h.p. and mechanics estimated at 639,900 rubles. This is 22,000 rubles more than for a similarly equipped sedan. The maximum configuration costs 804,900 rubles for a 1.8 liter engine. with a robotic box.

They wait for the promised two years. Launching the serial production of the Lada Vesta sedan on September 25, 2015, the then head of AVTOVAZ, Bo Andersson, promised that the station wagon would enter the conveyor exactly one year later, on September 25, 2016. But even less than a year passed ... and Andersson left, and the bold commitments had to be revised.

Initially, it was assumed that they would be produced in Togliatti - contrary to what the sedan is doing in Izhevsk. Later this strange logistics concept was revised: station wagons will also be made at the Lada Izhevsk plant (formerly Izh-Auto). Body dies arrived in Izhevsk only in winter, so the assembly line was prepared in a short time.

Serial production should start in July. If there are no malfunctions, this year a total of about nine thousand cars will be made - approximately equal parts of both modifications. They will go on sale in the fall.

From another test

Vesta SW is a station wagon, not typical for AVTOVAZ. Starting with the Fiat 124 Familiare, “seamless” from the Italian counterpart, all Togliatti utility vehicles were more “cargo” than passenger. The VAZ-2104 did not bring anything new to this concept, the VAZ-2111, with its almost vertical rear door, developed the cargo start, and raised it to the absolute.

Next to these hard workers, Vesta SW - fragrant with freshness. When Steve Mattin says that he cannot be named the only author of the design, he is clearly being shy. Back in Sweden, he got his hands on cutting Volvo cargo-passenger "suitcases" and showed the world the fast-paced Volvo V60. You also see a Volvo when you look at the Vesta station wagon? This is not a reproach to Steve. Rather the opposite. This means that our car is tailored according to modern European patterns. Moreover, the Vesta SW is sleeker than the Volvo - at least for my taste. The roof line torn off from the rest of the body, the shark fin of the rear pillar turned against the course, the elongated silhouette - a dynamic profile!

The body has been licked for a long time from the point of view of aerodynamics, so a developed rear spoiler has appeared, which hangs thickly over the tailgate. It calms airflow, reduces turbulence and minimizes rear window contamination.

Everything below the rear license plate is the same for the sedan and station wagon. The same bumpers, the same taillights, including their inner sections.

Therefore, the dimensions are similar. The length of the station wagon is 4410 mm (exactly like that). The wheelbase is 2635 mm. Width - 1764 mm (on the body, excluding the width of the mirrors). Height over luggage rails - 1512 mm.

Ultimate unification allowed to shorten development time and reduce project cost. This will bring certain advantages in the future. If, after some time, restyling is needed, less time and money will be spent on it, which means the buyer will benefit. It can also be assumed that spare parts will become slightly more affordable - if not in price, then precisely in terms of availability: there will be no need to keep separate parts for the sedan and for the station wagon in warehouses.

Who where?

In our photos, which we managed to take before the official premiere, there is only Vesta SW Cross. This is one of the first commercial vehicles. The basic station wagon is outwardly simpler, it is completely devoid of black decor and is called Vesta SW. As you might guess, the abbreviation SW - from the English station wagon, station wagon.

How do SW and SW Cross differ from each other? If you compare metal body panels - nothing! At the same time, cars visually vary greatly.

SW Cross almost exactly repeats the concept that was shown at the Moscow SUV exhibition two years ago. It has two-tone bumpers that create a more secure feel. The entire body is surrounded by black plastic lining. The twin tailpipes add a sporty touch to the car.

The SW Cross is only 4 mm longer than the usual station wagon - because of the black overlays on the seemingly aggressive bumpers. In addition, it is slightly taller (1532 mm). Finally, the Cross has 17-inch wheels - the concept car was an inch larger, and the regular Vesta SW station wagon will be an inch smaller. Accordingly, Cross has a slightly wider track. Larger wheels required suspension readjustments.

All this does not really fit in with the rather conservative approaches that AVTOVAZ previously adhered to. Togliatti residents remained true only to the good old tradition of making cars for our bad roads. What am I talking about? About clearance!

The Vesta SW has a ground clearance of 178 mm. This is already enough for our cities and villages. SW Cross is even steeper: 203 mm under the bottom! It is clear that only front-wheel drive. But if you put more teeth on the SW Cross, it will be already good. And if you do it (I'm sure there will be craftsmen), SW Cross will compete with other all-wheel drive crossovers. Hopefully, the stabilization system will be completely disconnected - so that it does not interfere on the off-road.

And more about unification. Remember last year's Vesta Cross prototype sedan with the same plastic body kit? Since the sedan and station wagon are maximally unified, it will not be difficult for the plant to launch the Cross sedan on the market. The only question is timing.

What's inside?

It makes no sense to kick the air under the rear bumper - there is no electric trunk drive on Vesta, this is the prerogative of higher class cars. Open with handles.

We were not allowed to photograph the interior of the first car, so use your imagination.

Since the rear bumper is borrowed from the sedan, the loading height is slightly higher than we would like.

Trunk volume? When this material was being prepared, there was still no exact data. The Vesta sedan has a trunk that holds 480 liters. It can be assumed that the trunk of the station wagon has approximately the same dimensions (under the removable curtain).

It may seem that a developed spoiler narrows the doorway, but this is not so: it is part of the door, therefore it rises with it - and a huge throat of the trunk appears, not very wide, but high.

How much?

And now about the most important thing. When we were preparing this article for publication, prices were still in the formation stage. A few months ago, Nicolas More said that the wagon would be slightly more expensive than 800 thousand rubles.

Since the technical stuffing of the SW wagon does not differ from the sedan (in our illustrations - a car with a 1.8 engine), I would venture to assume that it will be sold for 620-800 thousand rubles, depending on the power unit and equipment level. The upper bar on the SW Cross can rise to 850 thousand rubles.

Let's see if my prediction comes true.

Are domestic cars safe or not? This issue causes a lot of controversy to this day, and there are a lot of adherents of both one and the other point of view. Everyone tries to prove their case, and after the appearance on the market of new cars from AVTOVAZ - Lada Vesta Lada and LadaX-Ray, the issue became even more urgent. Vehicle safety data compiled from station wagon crash tests. In what conditions were the tests carried out, what kind of tests they were, and what the result was - read further in the article.

Pre-serial testing of LadaVestaCrossSport

Even before the serial production of cars started, complex tests began. It was the month of May 2017. One of these tests was attended by analysts from "Autoreview" - this is an authoritative publication that is trusted in the automotive world. Then the machine was tested with a side impact on a ram weighing nine hundred kilograms, there was also a removable tip, and the speed was 50 km / h.

The subject was the fully equipped carriage, which contained four airbags. The result exceeded all expectations, and the designers of AVTOVAZ were proud of it. Most of the shock energy was absorbed by the threshold, the side airbags were fully operational, and the rear windows were not damaged in principle, which cannot be said about the driver's window.

AVTOVAZ reports say that the sensors that were fixed on the driver's dummy did not show excessive load. According to the HIC (Hydrogen Cracking) standards, which mark head trauma, the result is good.
An interesting feature was noted by one expert of "Autoreview". The manufacturer did not test the Cross station wagon with a loaded luggage compartment, although such a test would seem necessary. Such a test would show how reliably the overall load above the window line is fixed.
AVTOVAZ explained why they decided not to carry out such a crash test on the Lada Vesta cross sw. The reason lies in the very purpose of the car, because it is not designed for the transportation of goods, but is an SUV that has increased cross-country ability, but no more.

The package does not include rear side airbags, even if we consider the most expensive, top-end versions, there are side airbags in the cabin only in the front row. This was explained by the fact that the final assessment of testing according to EU standards will not change in any way from their presence, if the corresponding active safety systems are not installed in the car.
According to many experts, those who purchase top-end versions would not mind paying a little more for additional rear row protection.

Crash test Lada Vesta SV cross - serial version

As soon as sales of the car started, station wagons were tested, which belonged to the production models. To assess the consequences of a frontal impact, the ARCAP method was used (head-on collision with an obstacle at a speed of 64 km / h), and the test was carried out by representatives of the "Autoreview" publication.
The side impact test was carried out on a specially equipped territory of the AVTOVAZ plant. Repeated tests in a full cycle were necessary, since the production car increased both ground clearance and weight.

Representatives of "Autoreview" specially for testing purchased a car for 798,000 rubles, which in the end was badly broken. To assess the consequences, it was necessary to organize a frontal collision against deformable floors, the speed was km / h. Even before the start of the procedure, specialists noted the presence of large wheels, which is a clear advantage of the car. The top version of the Cross station wagon is equipped with 17-inch wheels, but the sedan can boast only 15-inch wheels. Experts measured the mass of the car, it turned out that it weighs 148 kg more than the sedan, so the energy absorption was expected to be 13% more.

Experts from the manufacturer's plant were also invited for testing. The first impression after the collision - the car withstood it perfectly. One of the alloy wheels cracked with energy, but also took some of the impact. According to the results of this testing, the car is resistant to frontal impact, and received a high score. However, if the car is tested according to the progressive European method Euro NCAP, the result is not so good, since it is also necessary to assess the structural integrity of the passenger seat in the cabin.

At the same time, it is known that since 2016, the plant has modified the front sills in cars, using thickened metals. Representatives of "Autoreview" decided to cut the threshold and remove the outer linings - as it turned out, the deformation also affected the power unit itself.

After that, they decided to start removing the floor sound insulation, under which the torn floor appeared, that is, the legroom collapsed, and this is already a reason to remove one point. The break points fell precisely on the points, but there were no complaints about welding. Consequently, the sheet metal supplied to AVTOVAZ is not of sufficient quality.
The floor of the car under the driver's seat was also deformed, it turned out to be raised, and this is an unnecessary load on the lower leg area. As a result, the crash test of the Lada Vesta SV cross actually failed - it earned only a satisfactory performance. The maximum score is 16 points, while Vesta got only 11.7. The cons are received for the following reasons:

• The lower legs are not sufficiently protected.
• The floor is deformed according to Euro NCAP standards, which means that the doorway is not stable.
• The threshold broke, and the mannequin hit the plastic steering column. Although not dangerous, plastic covers a number of metal components.

The car was given only three stars.

How AVTOVAZ reacted to the test results

The engineers were really puzzled by the results, they decided to buy back the broken car in order to investigate it, since there was a possibility of marriage during the assembly process. However, this option was not confirmed. Then they carried out a computer simulation, and compared the tests, the results of the tests at the site of the plant and the result of the "Autoreview" test. It turned out that the reason for this behavior in a collision was ballast. There is an algorithm for preparing a car for testing.

When testing was carried out at the factory, 2 child seats and 2 child dummies were installed on the back sofa, but in the external test they used metal ingots, which were screwed to the floors. The weight of each ingot is 20 kg. Permission to use this approach is given by Euro NCAP only if there is a guarantee that it will not affect the test results.
A mathematical model was created, and the engineers found that the use of two ingots, each weighing twenty kilograms, affected the loading of the reinforcements and welds, increasing it by 20%. Therefore, the floors were deformed.

After clarifying this fact, 2 similar procedures were carried out using metal ingots, and the result was consistent with that. What did the representatives of "Autoreview" get? But the 3rd test was carried out with children's dummies, and it gave excellent results. Here, the belts work excellently, the floor is not wrinkled, the metal and welding can withstand shock.
It turns out that if 2 dummies of children were seated in the car, then she would have received almost 15 points instead of 11.7. Nevertheless, the results of the test served as a good idea for the designers to compact the floors, and they succeeded.

Lada Vesta Cross crash test in side impact

Again, the test result is influenced by the evaluation criteria, as in frontal collisions. Side impacts were tested already at the manufacturer's premises, they took the top-end configuration of the station wagon. He will participate in a collision with a cart, which weighs 950 kg, has a crumple barrier, speed - 50 km / h. The central part of the car was chosen for the strike.
The manufacturer spoke about the side cushion, which was sewn into the seat backs, in a collision it should open up, block the window opening by almost half, and the protection will touch not only the body, but also the head.

After the collision, representatives of ERA-GLONASS contacted the car after 27 seconds, which is very prompt. Given the shift in the center of gravity closer to the front, a slight stern turn was expected. The driver's window was completely shattered, but the rear windows and the mirror were not damaged.
The chief engineer personally expressed his impression of the test, calling it successful. He noted the timely opening of the side airbag, while the experts began assessing the damage in the cabin, fixing the efforts when opening the doors and other analyzes. Only then do they start checking the condition of the dummy.
When the project was just being worked out, the employees of AVTOVAZ decided to strengthen the thresholds, because the car's ground clearance increased, so it was the threshold that would have to receive shock energy. Only with the help of reinforcement it was possible to minimize the effect of the threshold on the central pillars and the likelihood of their displacement.
It was a successful crash test of the Lada Vesta cross - the video is clear proof that there were no problems with opening the doors after the collision, the gasoline did not spill out of the tank, and the dummies did not receive serious injuries, especially since they did not even need a tool to extract them. The battery is a whole, there were no dangerous parts in the cabin, according to the criteria of injuries, they are all below the threshold standards.
The manufacturer does not plan to test a car with a full luggage compartment or heavy loads, considering it not so necessary. It is important to note that the European Union already has toughened standards for the formation of an assessment, and Vesta was tested according to the standards that were developed back in the eighties.
For example, using a cart weighing 950 kg is considered irrelevant. Since almost all modern cars weigh more than a ton. According to the Euro NCAP standard, a weight limit is set - 1 ton and 300 kg, but the assessment standards are the same.

How are the tests

According to ARCAP, a crash test is a frontal collision of a car at 64 km / h with a deformable barrier that mimics the front of a passenger car using aluminum particles. Statistics indicate the rarity of direct collisions, so testing involves the car hitting an obstacle from the front. Where is the driver. The fixed size of the overlap is 40%. It is the ability to simulate a displaced, frontal collision of two vehicles of almost the same mass.

The total speed is 110 km / h. Two mannequins are seated in the salon, and with the help of sensors installed on them, information about the overloads that act upon impact on such parts of the body as the head, lower leg, chest, kneecaps and hip region are recorded.
They investigate the information on the driver of the front row passenger, calculating what kind of injuries they can get. And with what probability. The calculation takes into account the movement of the steering wheel, the shift of the front left pillars and pedals.

If we evaluate the test result according to the criteria of the Russian factory with children's dummies, then it turned out to be just fine. There are no floor gaps at the welding points, the thresholds are not swollen or kinked. The specialists managed to prove that the unsuccessful points obtained during the external test were obtained through the fault of the representatives of "Autoreview". The use of twenty kilogram bars affected the bottom line as they increased the load on the floors.
When testing at AVTOVAZ, Vesta SW Cross was able to get not only 14.9 points, but also a maximum of 4 stars. The car has high safety indicators, more than Lada Kalina, which scored only 10.1 points, and Grant, with a score of 10.7 points.
