All about buying and selling cars

Mercedes glk ground clearance. Mercedes GLA: ground clearance, reviews, price and specifications (photo)

Sagged somewhat, sales of new cars fell by 5.5%. The general downward trend in sales rates can be divided by sectors: cars of class B + fell by 15.5%, segments C + and D + - by 12 and 19%, respectively. The statistics are disappointing. And only crossovers with SUVs not only retained their previously won positions, but even distinguished themselves by a 16% increase in sales. Characteristically, premium models from manufacturers such as BMW and AUDI, X1 and Q3 dominate. Land Rover with the Evoque crossover is not far behind them. But the most visible representative on the SUV market is Mercedes-Benz with its new Mercedes vehicle. In some ways the car repeats the parameters of the 5-door GLK, but in general it is an independent, larger and more representative crossover of the Mercedes dynasty.

Clearance

At first glance, the Mercedes GLA is an A-class hatchback with increased ground clearance. Indeed, the Mercedes Benz GLA, whose ground clearance is 157 mm, looks exactly like this. The machine is raised and nothing more. However, if you look closely, the opinion of an expert may change. Mercedes GLA, whose ground clearance in the package off-road version is already 187 mm, makes a slightly different impression, much more impressive. The variety of proposals for the model makes you wonder what is worth, for example, a sports suspension that is meaningless for an SUV, officially included in the list of options? In this version, the Mercedes Benz GLA has a ground clearance of 142 mm. Perhaps, in the future, the situation will become clear, and it will become clear why and why the sports suspension is mentioned.

Exclusivity level

However, for the Mercedes GLA crossover, clearance is not everything. The model is distinguished by its original hood, bumpers and optics. The door contours are also exclusive. The dimensions have significantly increased in comparison with the dimensions of the predecessor, the length is 4417 mm, which is 125 mm more, the width has added 24 mm and is 1804 mm, the height has increased by 60 mm - up to 1494 mm. With all this, the wheelbase of the new Mercedes Benz GLA and Mercedes A-class is completely identical - 2699 mm. The height of the interior space in the Mercedes GLA cabin (the clearance does not play any role) has increased significantly: in the area of \u200b\u200bthe driver's seat and the front passenger's seat by 38 mm, and in the rear of the cabin - by 19 mm. The luggage compartment has increased to values \u200b\u200bof 421-1235 against the previous 341-1157 liters.

Old and new options

As for the interior of the new crossover, it is unified with the A-class, this is obvious. Therefore, it is worth talking about the technical parameters of the GLA. In this aspect, the differences are quite noticeable, the body has become much stiffer than that of the hatchback, thanks to the use of transverse profiles on the bottom, molded from high-strength steel. The share of stringers increased from 67 to 73%. The chassis of the new car has no fundamental differences from the A-class suspensions, the front suspension is Pherson, the rear is multi-link with a lateral stabilizer bar.

However, manufacturers were concerned about increasing the level of comfort for the Mercedes Benz GLA, and the crossover received constructively new shock absorbers and springs, and the amplitude of the suspension arms was also increased. Thus, the chassis has been updated in the most radical way. The same cannot be said about the steering mechanism, which passed to the new model without changes, with the already proven electromechanical amplifier and steering variator, which changes the ratio of the gear ratios of the mechanism depending on the speed of movement.

Power point

Purposeful GLA walks selflessly along the track, waiting for control from the driver, but hardly wants to be obedient right away. Although in a split second it will obey. This is the high class of the car, its constructive essence. And the fuel consumption (20 liters per 100 km) no longer matters - any criteria give way to the splendor of the Mercedes Benz GLA.

Advantages and prices

So, Mercedes Benz GLA class2014, whose ground clearance (140 mm) does not dare to call the ground clearance, wearing a model suit "GLA 45 AMG", in 4 seconds gained 100 km / h and continues to rip the air. And if you drown the accelerator pedal to the floor for a minute, the car will easily bypass the Lotus-Elita going in the right lane at a speed of 250 km / h. Here is such a difficult line, which includes Mercedes GLA 2014 cars, the clearance of which, as it turned out, does not always matter.

The prices of Mercedes Benz GLA on the Russian market are quite adequate to the class of cars offered. The price scale for the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG is still unknown, and sales of the most popular models have gained momentum for a long time. The most affordable GLA 200 will cost about 1 million 380 thousand rubles. A GLA 200 CDI car with a turbodiesel will require approximately 1,430,000 rubles. And the all-wheel drive GLA 250 4Matic will cost 1 million 540 thousand Russian rubles. Prices are clearly "bite", but all the listed brands can deprive any skeptic of arguments.

Equipment

The kit includes 7 airbags, three of them are frontal, located in the steering column, at the driver's feet and in the dashboard in front of the front passenger seat. The seats themselves are crash-proof, non-splinter-free, do not break upon impact, but only deform. The chassis is equipped with an effective stabilization system, bi-xenon headlights, all heated seats, 17-inch wheels and many other useful little things, without which the car is just a means of transportation. Difficult, often controversial, Benz GLA feels confident in the Russian market, the modifications are varied, the equipment does not leave much to be desired. Reviews of the Mercedes Benz GLA are only positive.

The Mercedes-Benz GLK (X204 body) is a compact SUV from the Mercedes-Benz manufacturing company. The GLK is 4.53 m long and is based on the C-class platform (204 series) and has been sold on the European market since October 2008. This car appeared on the American market in January 2009. In 2008, two concept versions of the SUV were exhibited at the Detroit International Auto Show, and the production model was represented by the German auto industry at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2008.

Until November 2011, this car was produced exclusively in Bremen, but from December 2011 GLK began to be produced in Beijing. Mercedes is positioning the GLK as a compact luxury SUV. It was originally sold for € 40341, then the price dropped to € 35462. In the summer of 2012, for the first time in five years since production, the X204 range underwent restyling.

Development and testing

Development engineers have tested the GLK thoroughly. During the tests, he covered about 4.5 million kilometers and even tried himself on the roads of Namibia. Additionally, a computer simulator program was created, with the help of which the digital prototype was tested. Thus, specialists have tested about 1000 different versions of the GLK and passed about 200,000 roll tests.

Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE

As mentioned above, two versions of the GLK were exhibited in Detroit in 2008. These were the Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE models. Both versions have short overhangs at both the front and rear (816 mm front and 957 mm rear). The front pillar is narrow enough and does not interfere with the all-round view.

The Vision FREESIDE has a ground clearance of 201 mm and overhang angles of 23 degrees front and 25 degrees rear. The wide gray FREESIDE sill skirts protrude beyond the contours of the body to give the vehicle an imposing appearance.

Mercedes Vision GLK FREESIDE (2008)

The ground clearance of the GLK TOWNSIDE is small, this car is a SUV and is designed for urban conditions rather than off-road. It does not have sills like the GLK FREESIDE. Both models are equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels. Both Vision models have a 4-cylinder 2.1-liter engine with 170 hp. This is a recent development representing a new generation of 4-cylinder diesel engines (OM 651). They are equipped with a twin turbocharger and a common rail system. The environmental friendliness of diesel engines meets the Euro-6 standard, thanks to the use of BlueTEC fluid.

Completion and packages

Serial complete set

The standard equipment of the GLK-class crossover includes ASR, ABS, BAS, ESP systems, a manual 6-speed or automatic 7-speed gearbox, 4ETS (traction control), crash-active head restraints and a driver's knee airbag, as well as suspension AGILITY CONTROL with selective shock absorbers. AGILITY CONTROL automatically controls the shock absorbers for improved road stability and a smoother ride. Along with the suspension, the adjustable steering column also plays a role.

Apart from the rear-wheel drive GLK models, all models have a 7-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC drive system. Models with 6-cylinder engine are characterized by "parametric steering". The THERMATIC 2-zone climate control system is installed as standard.

The audio system has a Bluetooth-interface with a “hands-free” function, an Aux-in socket (it is located in the glove compartment, and since autumn 2011 it has been moved to the center console), a telephone keypad and six speakers. For the GLK SUV, emergency lighting and an automatic light switch system are provided. The clear-optic halogen fog lamps use H7 bulbs as part of the active headlight system. Since December 2009, the vehicles produced have been equipped with LED daytime running lights.

All car windows have a thermal insulation layer, and the rear window is heated. The tank has a volume of 59 liters. The basic equipment of the GLK includes 7-spoke alloy wheels.

Special equipment

All special equipment for the GLK models is supplied as "packages". At the time of market launch, the GLK was supposed to be supplied with a package that defines its body design (“Offroad-Styling-Paket” or “Sport-Paket Exterieur”), now the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY version has been released, and it became the base model.

Various options can be installed on the car: the first generation “PRE-SAFE” system, a steep slope control system, a suspension lowered by 20 mm, an intelligent lighting system, as well as wide-profile tires of 19 or 20 inches. At the request of the buyer, an intelligent system “Keyless Go” can be installed. The buyer can also choose one of two radio navigation systems.

The standard audio 50 APS car radio has a CD / DVD-player, as well as a telephone keypad and a navigation system with arrow indication. In addition to the radio, an entertainment system is installed, the components of which are built into the rear seats. The system consists of a DVD player, two 8-inch screens and two wireless headphones, and can be remotely controlled. Options and base model

Packages "Offroad-Styling-Paket" and "Offroad-Technik Paket"

The “Offroad-Styling” package gives the GLK the look of an off-road vehicle, thanks to the plastic body kits on the car body. Anti-corrosion protection is provided for the body and bottom. The roof has black roof rails. The package includes a radiator grill with two louvres and 17-inch light alloy wheels.

The "Offroad-Technik" package is the perfect complement to the off-road performance of the GLK. This package includes the installation of the “Offroad-Fahr” unit, which, when driving off-road, changes the nature of the gas pedal action and connects additional mechanisms for controlling the movement on slopes and inclines. Thus, the controlled descent system automatically sets the required speed parameters when leaving a steep slope.

In addition, the Comand APS multimedia system has a special "off-road" function, with which you can plot routes on a digital map of the area, the system will automatically remember them and will be able to prompt the driver on the way back.

Packages "Sport-Paket Exterieur" and "Sport-Paket Interieur"

Mercedes GLK350 Sports Package X204 (2008-2012)

All GLK 300 4MATIC models, including the GLK 350 CDI 4MATIC, are fitted with 7G-Tronic Plus and an exclusive Stop & Start system.

Off-road performance

Despite the fact that the GLK was created primarily for city driving, it has all the qualities of an SUV. Its ground clearance is 201 mm, front and rear ground clearance 816 and 957 mm, respectively; overhang angles are equal to 23 degrees front and 25 degrees rear, the angle of passage is 19 degrees. This allows the GLK to overcome obstacles with an incline of up to 70%. The maximum tilt angle is 35 degrees. In addition, the short wheelbase of 2755 mm contributes to the increased cross-country ability.

The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system allows torque distribution in a 45:55 ratio. At the same time, support is provided for systems such as ESP, ASR and 4ETS. A new multi-plate clutch has been developed for the GLK, which supports the AWD system in conditions of insufficient tire adhesion (for example, when the road is covered with snow or ice). In this case, the center differential lock may engage.

If you want to get more pleasure from driving on rough terrain, you can order the "Offroad-Technik-Paket". This package includes the installation of the "Offroad-Fahr" block. In difficult road conditions, it activates additional off-road functions. A special "off-road" function is also available in the Comand APS multimedia system, providing a dynamic routing mode on a digital terrain map. This package provides for anti-corrosion treatment of the underbody and car body.

Restyling

On June 30, 2012, a restyled version of the GLK entered the market. The main changes affected the front of the car. The headlights have become more rounded, the radiator grille has increased, the shape of the air ducts has changed, the front bumper has become less angular. The taillights have also changed, with new reflectors positioned higher. The exhaust pipe has widened slightly and is firmly anchored in the rear bumper. The GLK now has a new steering wheel inherited from the C-Class.

Some details are still recognizable, for example, the cruciform nozzle made of aluminum and the assistance systems inherent in the same C-class. In addition, on models with an automatic gearbox, the shift lever is located under the steering wheel, while on those with a manual gearbox, gear changes are made in the usual way.

After restyling, two new engines appeared in the GLK-class. The GLK 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY has been updated with a 265 hp / 195 kW engine, and for the first time the X204 has a 4-cylinder engine. It is a 211 hp / 155 kW 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection.

Awards

The GLK won the AUTO TROPHY 2008 for SUVs worth over € 30,000, and was named the Autobild Car of the Year 2009 for SUVs / SUVs worth between € 40,000 and € 60,000.

In the spring of 2009, the GLK became the first crossover to receive the ISO 14062 certificate. This certificate confirms the car's compliance with the strictest environmental standards.

Other

Since June 30, 2008, 10,000 vehicles have been sold in Europe, 1,000 of which are special Edition 1 models. In 2010, 12,470 GLK crossovers were purchased in China. Compared to the previous year, sales increased by 170%. From the start of sales until April 2011, 170,000 vehicles were delivered to the market

Based on the GLK, Brabus has created the fastest urban crossover. Thanks to its 6-liter V12 engine with 750 hp / 552 kW and 1350 Nm of torque, it reaches a top speed of 322.3 km / h. The GLK V12 accelerates from rest to hundreds of km / h in 4.2 seconds; up to 200 km / h in 12.8 seconds. Fuel is consumed within 20.8 liters per 100 km; CO2 emissions - 487 g / km. The price is € 472,430.

The drag coefficient is between 0.34 and 0.36.

The name "GLK" stands for the following: "G" stands for G-class, thereby emphasizing the good off-road qualities of this crossover. The letter "L" stands for enhanced luxury comfort. "K" refers to the compact size of the GLK.

Prospects for the future

With the release of the GLK 300 BlueTEC HYBRID in March 2012, a plug-in hybrid model was introduced for the first time in the GLK class. A concept called the Vision GLK BlueTEC HYBRID was already on display at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. 4-cylinder turbo diesel "Common-Rail" with a volume of 2.1 liters, paired with an electric motor.

The total power is 224 hp. 5.9 liters are consumed per 100 km; CO2 emissions are 159 g / km. According to environmental standards, the car meets Euro-6 standards. Its top speed is 215 km / h, it accelerates to hundreds of km / h in 7.3 s. The package includes the "Stop-Start" option. The launch of the GLK 300 BlueTEC HYBRID in the automotive market, scheduled for 2011, did not take place.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is an all-wheel-drive premium SUV of the mid-size category, combining a "thoroughbred" design, high-class interior decoration, productive technical "stuffing" and innovative equipment ... The target audience of this crossover, as a rule, includes wealthy city dwellers (regardless of gender ) who are inclined to spend time actively and do not want to sacrifice something in their daily life ...

A significant event took place on June 18, 2015 in Stuttgart - Daimler AG, on behalf of Mercedes-Benz, pulled off the cover from the new premium crossover, which replaced the GLK. The car not only radically changed externally and internally, but also received the name "GLC" as a result of rebranding. The international premiere of the model took place at the autumn motor show in Frankfurt, after which it went on sale in the world's leading markets (and not only).

On the last day of February 2019, during an online presentation, the Germans declassified a restyled crossover, which made its full-scale debut on the stage of the Geneva Motor Show in early March. As a result of the renovation, the five-door was "refreshed" from the outside (due to new bumpers, optics, radiator grill and wheels), acquired a more "advanced" interior, received many new options and "armed" with an upgraded range of engines.

The exterior of the Mercedes-Benz GLC is designed in a completely new, more sporty style, which is freed from the angularity and rudeness of its predecessor, trying to diligently resemble the Gelendvagen. The exterior of the crossover is dominated by rounded-streamlined shapes and smooth lines, and with them "family" features reminiscent of the latest models of the brand - compact headlights and stylish lanterns (in both cases - with a fully LED "filling"), a large radiator grille with an emblem brand in the center and embossed sidewalls.

The domed upper contour of the glazing, a pseudo-diffuser with a pair of exhaust pipes in the rear bumper and beautiful rims contribute to the construction of a spectacular look.

This is a mid-size crossover with the corresponding outer dimensions: 4655 mm long, 1890 mm wide, 1644 mm high. The wheelbase of the car fits into 2873 mm, and the ground clearance indicator depends on the version: "in the base" - 181 mm, with air suspension - from 147 mm in loading mode and up to 227 mm for off-road conquest.

The curb weight of the five-door varies from 1800 to 1845 kg, depending on the equipment option.

In the interior of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, the close affinity with the C-Class is immediately apparent, both in terms of architecture and design. The instrument cluster, instead of three "wells" in the previous model, is presented by an informative and strict scheme with a pair of different-sized dials and a color display in the center, and as an option it can be completely digital (with a 12.3-inch display). The three-spoke steering wheel, familiar from other representatives of the brand, not only looks stylish, but also carries a high functional load due to the control elements (some of them are sensory).

The top of the chic curved console in the center, which is literally endowed with reference ergonomics, is "occupied" by a large "tablet" of the multimedia complex, the diagonal of which, depending on the configuration, is 7 or 10.25 inches. Below are three "round" ventilation systems, and even lower - neat control units for "climate" and audio system.

The quality of the interior is fully consistent with the premium essence of the Mercedes GLC - several types of high-quality leather or suede, natural wood, carbon fiber and aluminum.

By default, the premium crossover's interior is five-seater, with ample space provided in both rows of seats. At the front, there are ergonomic chairs with unobtrusive lateral bolsters, filling with optimal rigidity and a large number of adjustments. At the back there is a comfortable sofa with a folding armrest and individual ventilation deflectors, but also a tunnel that is too high and wide, interfering with the average passenger.

In the five-seater layout, the luggage compartment of the car has 550 liters, and in the two-seater - 1600 liters. The backs of the "gallery", divided in a ratio of 40/20/40, can be brought to an almost vertical position (the so-called "cargo mode"), freeing up several liters of volume without harming the seats.

In the Russian market, the restyled Mercedes-Benz GLC is offered with two four-cylinder engines (but in four modifications), each of which is separated into a bundle of a 9-band "automatic" and four-wheel drive with imitation of interwheel differential locks by means of electronics, distributing traction between the wheels in a ratio of 45:55 in favor of the rear axle:

  • The petrol versions rely on a 2.0-liter M264 unit with a two-flow turbocharger, direct fuel injection, a Camtronic variable valve timing system and a 16-valve DOHC timing belt, which by default is also supplemented by a 14 hp belt-driven starter-generator. and 150 Nm, operating from a 48-volt electrical system. The motor itself is declared in two levels of boost:
    • on the GLC 200 4Matic version, it produces 197 horsepower at 5500-6100 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 1650-4000 rpm;
    • and on the GLC 300 4Matic - 249 hp. at 5800-6100 rpm and 370 Nm of peak thrust at 1650-4000 rpm.
  • Under the hood of the diesel modifications is the 2.0-liter OM654 turbocharged engine with Common Rail battery technology and a 16-valve timing structure, also available in two pumping options:
    • 194 h.p. at 3800 rpm and 400 Nm of rotational potential at 1600-2800 rpm;
    • or 245 hp at 4200 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at 1600-2400 rpm.

From standstill to 100 km / h, the mid-size SUV accelerates after 6.2-7.9 seconds, and accelerates to a maximum of 215-240 km / h.

Gasoline cars, on average, have 7.4 liters of fuel for every "hundred" of run in the combined cycle, and diesel cars - 5.4-5.9 liters.

It is worth noting that before the update, the all-terrain vehicle was also equipped exclusively with 2.0-liter “fours”, but its gasoline units produced 211 and 245 hp. (GLC 250 4Matic and GLC 300 4Matic), and diesel - 170 and 204 hp. (GLC 220 d 4Matic and GLC 250 d 4Matic). In addition, a hybrid version of the GLC 350 e 4Matic (320 hp and 560 Nm) was delivered to us.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is built on a modular "rear-wheel drive" MRA platform, which implies an independent spring suspension on both axles - four-link at the front and five-link at the rear. "In the base" the car is equipped with springs and electronically controlled shock absorbers, optionally (but not for Russia) the pneumatic Air Body Control system is available with five modes of operation, variable clearance.

An electromechanical amplifier with an adjustable gear ratio is implanted into the steering mechanism of the five-door, and its braking system is represented by disc devices with “circular” ventilation, supplemented by modern assisting electronics.

On the Russian market, Mercedes-Benz GLC is offered in three fixed trim levels to choose from - "Premium", "Sport" and "Sport Plus".

  • The premium crossover in the initial configuration will cost 3,650,000 rubles, and regardless of the modification - whether it be the GLC 200 4Matic or the GLC 220 d 4Matic. By default, it has to its credit: seven airbags, full LED optics, dual-zone climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels (for the diesel version - 17-inch), MBUX media center with a 10.25-inch screen, rear view camera, heated front seats, servo drive of the fifth door, keyless entry and engine start, car park, premium audio system and much more.
  • The "Sport" version (available only for the GLC 300 d 4Matic) costs a minimum of 4,160,000 rubles, and its features are: external AMG body kit and appropriate interior decor, 19-inch wheels, electric front seats, heated steering wheel, navigator and contour lighting interior.
  • The “Sport Plus” version (exclusively for the GLC 300 4Matic) cannot be bought for less than 4,200,000 rubles, but its distinctive features include: extended dashboard graphics, black decor and a more advanced acoustic system.
The whole photo session

As we approached La Clusaz, high-speed lines gave way to picturesque winding roads. And here again a surprise. As it turned out, after the revision of the chassis (the parameters of the springs and shock absorbers were changed), the car became more obedient and tenacious, and not to the detriment of comfort - it is very pleasant to “tuck” GLK into turns. A precise steering wheel, slightly relaxed in the near-zero zone, allows for a subtle connection with the car. Only the thrust of the 2.1-liter engine on steep alpine bends seemed to me not enough, on the serpentine the car had to be kept in good shape, wielding the paddle shifters of the 7-band automatic 7G-TRONIC PLUS. In a word, the GLK 250 BlueTec 4Matic modification is more suitable for the city, where the engine will provide juicy “lows” for active changes, as well as for the highway. For many, an enviable economy will be a plus. Such a Mercedes-Benz consumes only 6.5 l / 100 km of diesel fuel in the combined cycle.

The top-end diesel version of the GLK 350 CDI 4Matic BlueEFFICIENCY is a different matter. I change into this car already in La Clusaz and realize that I am simply fascinated by the 3-liter diesel "six". Such a GLK does not need to be spirited, the sporty and manual transmission modes are needed here only for avid racers. Powerful acceleration with the notorious indentation of the body into the chair can be achieved in the “drive” mode. However, one shouldn't be surprised. In fact, this is the fastest and most powerful GLK, apart from the upcoming versions from AMG. The diesel produces 265 hp. and 620 Nm, accelerating the crossover to 100 km / h in just 6.4 s. Only in terms of maximum speed does the GLK 350 CDI 4Matic BlueEFFICIENCY lose to the top-end gasoline modification GLK 350 4Matic BlueEFFICIENCY 6 km / h. In addition, after the revision, the most powerful diesel engine of the model became 17% more economical. The 7-band automatic 7G-TRONIC PLUS and the start / stop system, which turns off the engine when the car stops, also contribute to a modest appetite.

Finally, we managed to test the top-end petrol modification. I was driving a GLK 350 4Matic Blue-EFFICIENCY on the second day of the driving presentation, and interest in it was fueled by information from representatives of the brand - Russian sales will begin with gasoline versions, while diesel GLKs will reach our country no earlier than six months later. The car, equipped with a 3.5-liter atmospheric "six", is good, but, in my opinion, is focused more on the Autobahn. The engine, which added 34 hp after restyling, develops 306 hp, but still gives out its maximum at high revs. However, there is no reason to complain about a sluggish pickup under any circumstances, whether it is off-roading, driving on a mountain serpentine or pushing in traffic jams. On a mountain road, I liked to operate the automatic gearbox paddles, keeping the engine at the peak of traction. The 7-band “automatic” 7G-TRONIC PLUS installed here (the only transmission reserved for the Russian market) goes through gears at lightning speed, but a small pause after the “kickdown” is still noticeable, and to a greater extent in gasoline cars. The GLK's brakes can easily upset the crossover, and the emergency braking system will assist in emergency situations.

With your own money

Russian sales of the updated GLK have already started, and the first to enter the market are the GLK300 4Matic BlueEFFICIENCY and GLK 350 4Matic BlueEFFICIENCY modifications, which are estimated at 1,890,000 and 2,390,000 rubles, respectively. Whether the price is high or not is a rhetorical question. In my opinion, for those who consciously choose a universal Mercedes-Benz car, the numbers are quite adequate. Yes, non-premium classmates are cheaper, but do not forget that by purchasing a car like the GLK, the consumer also receives a whole range of proprietary technologies and pleasant options - such as a multimedia unit with Internet access, driver fatigue tracking systems, keeping the traffic lane, monitoring behind blind spots, circular video review, adaptive cruise control, smart and nimble navigation. The list, as you understand, is far from complete. In addition, after restyling, the GLK remained one of the most beautiful and thoroughbred cars in the Mercedes-Benz model line, and this fact cannot be disregarded either.

Offroad arsenal

The GLK, while technically close to the C-class, was created with an eye on the G- and GL-class SUVs. Hence the letter “G” in the title. The off-road capabilities of the car were tested on a special testing ground, replete with steep descents, ascents and water obstacles, and test crossovers were equipped on this site with an optional off-road package. This implies improved geometric cross-country ability (ground clearance of 231 mm), off-road settings for the all-wheel drive system (the center differential clutch is locked earlier than standard GLKs without regular off-road assistants). ABS AND ESP automatically adapts to off-road conditions (wheel braking torque is corrected). In addition, the shift points in the 7G-TRONIC PLUS are transferred higher. Finally, there is the Descent Assist System (DSR) - a kind of autopilot that helps to slide down hills, the driver only needs to control the speed. As a result, the GLK easily coped with all the obstacles - it didn't get stuck, skidded or sat on its belly. So the off-road package can be definitely recommended for summer residents, tourists, fishermen and hunters.

The GLK model appeared relatively recently - in 2008. Since then, it has become one of the most striking cars in the Mercedes-Benz family. Initially, it was a rather bold variation on the classic Geländewagen, but over time its rough chopped body lines were replaced by more rounded ones ... AvtoMania studied the premium SUV, which approached the asphalt by 20 millimeters during the renovation.

In Mercedes they say that the face change GLK, in contrast to the invariable "Gelika", is dictated by the fact that the first GLK divided buyers into supporters and opponents of the model - some admired the rude design, others expressed their indignation. Therefore, developing an updated crossover, engineers from Stuttgart tried to create a universal version that would unite both sides. Now the squares have rounded out, the old off-road front bumper has disappeared, and the intricate shape of the LED optics and grille have added refinement to the GLK.

The interior has also lost a touch of "cubism". You look - and you won't find a single sharp edge! Even the vents of the ventilation system were changed to round ones, like on the SLK and SL roadsters. At first glance, it may seem that there is not a single old detail left in the cabin at all: the steering column selector of the “automatic” made room for additional cup holders on the central tunnel and the joystick of the COMAND multimedia complex. There was an updated stylish steering wheel, a dashboard with a color screen in the center of the speedometer, a large LCD display of the navigation system, and another audio system unit.

There are also changes in the on-board electronics. Now the crossover can be equipped with adaptive cruise control, automatic parking and all-round visibility, as well as blind spot monitoring and lane compliance monitoring.

Despite the "platform" of the C-Class, there is ample space in the front seats. With a height of 180 cm, you can also easily sit in the back, while your legs feel comfortable. By the way, the volume of the trunk here is modest - equal to 450 liters. The same Q5 has 540 liters, while the X3 (F25) has another 10 liters more.

During the off-road test, 4 cars were brought to us, but with one modification: a 2.2-liter diesel engine with 4Matic all-wheel drive system. As the organizers later said, this is the most popular version on the Ukrainian market. In conditions of mud, light snow and not very deep puddles, the younger diesel engine lives up to its expectations. Although the diesel V6 with 265 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque will be much more interesting.

After restyling, the GLK has become more comfortable, the ride has improved. The suspension is elastic in Mercedes, works flawlessly. The power steering has become electromechanical. Such a system, according to the manufacturer, in the event of a slip start, prompts the driver where to turn the steering wheel, and autonomously will be able to correct the trajectory of the wheels on unstable surfaces using wheel micro-turns. It also helps to save fuel.

The ground clearance situation of the updated GLK turned out to be ambiguous. In 2009, this car was boldly called one of the most "off-road" crossovers in the premium segment. But now the base clearance has decreased by 20 millimeters - to 177 millimeters. Isn't it not enough? Not enough - I drive up the hill, turn the steering wheel almost all the way and hear on the radio from the Mercedes-Benz instructor Igor Siroshtan: “ The ground clearance is decent here. The car copes with our track ..."- at the same moment I catch the road with my bottom. Raising the topic of clearance, in "Mercedes" they talk about improving handling and reducing fuel consumption, but in reality - GLK owners simply prefer to "travel" on an asphalt road.

The Offroad Engineering package helps to correct the situation a little, which now includes a ground clearance increased by 30 millimeters. With the off-road package, the 2013 GLK gets additional underbody protection with reinforced plastic and a variable speed downhill assist system. You also get an "off-road" algorithm for the transmission and electronic gas pedal. In addition, now the electronics earlier and more sharply blocks the differential and wheels when hanging diagonally.

Ukrainian sales of the updated GLK have already started. For the basic version of the GLK 220 CDI, they will ask for 448 840 UAH (approximately 40,000 euros). The top version 350 4MATIC is offered from 634 603 UAH. At the same time, the starting prices for the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 are similar, and for the Lexus RX - slightly higher.
