Restyling 08.2002-04.2005.

In late 2002, Toyota updated the Land Cruiser 100 both externally and technically. A new automatic five-speed gearbox has appeared; it has become available for turbodiesels since 2004 (for more details, see the first part of the article). Since 2002, the rear axle blocking on Russian dealer cars was carried out only on turbodiesels. The gasoline engine was slightly modernized - the power was increased from 205 hp. up to 238 hp The turbo diesel engine was also bumped up to 204 hp. Of the external changes: a new radiator grill, front and rear plastic optics, a new strip with the Land Cruiser inscription appeared on the tailgate, the front bumper was slightly changed, new rims 275 / 65R17 appeared. As an option, VGRS (Variable Gear Ratio Steering) steering was offered with a variable gear ratio (from 2.4 to 3.5 steering turns from lock to lock).

Navigation was only for the USA, Europe, Japan and China. In this case, the center console was completely different from the Russian and other versions.

But in Australia, dark inserts were available as an option. The stereo system for each market was offered differently, somewhere simpler, somewhere better - the color of the panel, for example, for Russia and the Arabs. Therefore, all stereo systems do not really take into account where and for which markets.

For the USA, wood trim was not offered in the basic configuration, it was offered only as an option (photo below). Or it was possible to order a marble finish. For the Japanese market, the console was also without wood finish.

The woodgrain finish was also dark (or light as pictured) like the Australian versions. The trim itself was not split and vertical, as on all other versions, but horizontal as on the LX 470. And on the LX 470 it was completely one-piece, while on the 100 series it consisted of 3 parts.

The center console has been updated in the cabin. The designers have kept the previous interior style, but made it more rational, on the one hand, and more luxurious, on the other. There was a new Optitron instrument panel for VX (in the base), for STD and GX there were simpler, conventional redesigned analog instruments.

A new multifunctional steering wheel has appeared. The voice communication system was only on Europeans and on cars intended for the United States.

New, electronically controlled five-speed gearbox. The photo shows the hydraulic suspension control unit. For Russia and third countries it was not. For the place of the two plugs, the front seats were heated, but it was installed only for markets with a cold climate.

For the place of the control unit for the stove for the rear passengers (on some versions there was a plug), a radio appeared, but it worked only when the headset was turned on.

In the STD and GX and GXL versions, the stove and air conditioner were controlled using twists (as in the pre-styling versions). The VX, VX-comfort, VX-R, Sahara versions had climate control.

The salon has remained unchanged, except for the updated center console.

VX-Comfort.

New equipment for Russia, while short due to GOSTs and other circumstances, replaced STD and GX. Comparable to GXL configuration. End of production of Land Cruiser 100.

Despite the popularity of downsizing, the next stricter environmental regulations and a worldwide call for limited consumption of resources, cars such as the Toyota Land Cruiser J100 will always have loyal fans who know what they are buying and use them for their intended purpose (although not always). A large Land Cruiser is a real SUV, not a luxury SUV for driving on asphalt. It was specially designed to withstand even the harshest operating conditions.

Model history

Land Cruiser J100 was introduced in 1997. The first restyling took place in 2003. It touched on the interior, and the taillights received transparent turn signal lenses. The changes also affected the radiator grill.

In 2005, another facelift was carried out. Outside, it can be recognized by the updated lighting technology. The center console has acquired a more aesthetic appearance and an additional display at the top. The standard equipment includes A-TRC stabilization and traction control systems.

All versions without fail had a permanent all-wheel drive with a gearbox, and in some instances there was also a rear axle lock.

Body and interior

Although the J100 belongs to the group of hefty Land Cruisers, it is only 8 cm longer than the popular Toyota Prado 120. But the difference in width is more noticeable - by 15 cm in favor of "weaving", which is certainly noticeable in the interior.

Probably not worth adding that the quality of the interior is uncompromisingly high. The only thing to complain about is the wiping leather on the steering wheel. Seats up to 300,000 km usually show no signs of wear.

The stock of space is abundant in any direction. The trunk has a volume of 1300 liters (up to the roof). Many of them have everything on board. However, navigation is less common - it came with a rear view camera. For an additional fee, a third row of seats of two seats was offered, which in the folded position were located along the sides of the trunk.

All power units of the Land Cruiser 100 have a timing belt driven by a toothed belt.

The main enemy of the 1HD turbodiesel is carbon deposits in the block head, the formation of which is facilitated by the coked EGR valve (after 300-400 thousand km). A knock or ringing will serve as a harbinger of misfortune. To avoid problems, the EGR valve must be either cleaned regularly or simply muffled. In addition, the 4.2-liter turbodiesel requires periodic valve adjustments - every 50,000 km.

Fuel injectors (from 15,000 rubles) and a turbine (from 46,000 rubles) serve 400-500 thousand km. But the high pressure fuel pump may require attention after 200,000 km. The new unit will cost 42,000 rubles. In some cases, repair is possible - 5,000 rubles for a repair kit. In addition, the SPV control solenoid (from 22,000 rubles) or the advance valve (from 10,000 rubles) may fail.

Many buyers have opted for the 4.7-liter V8 gasoline engine. It has two important features: unlimited torque at any speed and no equipment that can fail. However, all gasoline engines are very reliable. Only the ignition coils have to be changed (about 5,000 rubles apiece).

Transmission

5-speed mechanics relied only on diesel units. It is practically eternal. However, most cars are equipped with an automatic machine. Until 2003, it had four gears (A340F), and after five (with diesel engines only since 2004). Both automatic transmissions are developed by Aisin.

The 4-speed A340F is very reliable and unpretentious - it arrives for repairs after 400,000 km. Most often, the torque converter wears out, which leads to vibrations and beats, as well as wear to the pump, oil seal and bushing.

The 5-band A750F is in service earlier - after 200-250 thousand km. Solenoids, Teflon and rubber rings, paper gaskets are the first to develop their resource. With regular off-road trips, problems arise with the torque converter and hydraulic plate. Over 60,000 rubles will be needed for repairs.

Transmission

By 300-400 thousand km, when changing the driving mode, shocks or jolts occur in the transmission. This is the total backlash, which is made up of the small backlash of each transmission element. In some cases, it will take 200,000 rubles to fix the problem. However, it is often possible to get rid of the disease after eliminating the backlash in the drives and spline joints of the front axle.

Over time, locks stop turning on. The problem is the servos and wiring - they give up when exposed to water.

Ultimately, it is the turn of the front gearbox - the satellites wear out. The cost of the repair is about 20,000 rubles. The rear gearbox is much more durable. Age machines suffer from leaking axle shaft seals.

Chassis

The biggest difference between the J100 and its predecessor, the J80, is the availability of an independent 2-link torsion bar front suspension instead of a rigid axle. This decision, of course, increased the comfort of the movement, but received a lot of criticism from off-road fans. Primarily due to a decrease in the strength and resource of the structure. Silent blocks, ball joints and shock absorbers travel more than 60-100 thousand km even in severe operating conditions.

Another source of problems is the sophisticated ANS hydraulic suspension system with active height control. After a hard off-road, the backside may "settle". Sometimes it is enough to replace the level / body position sensor, but sometimes the damage is much greater. After 150-200 thousand km shock absorbers may leak (20,000 rubles per piece), which leads to more frequent operation of the "motor" and, as a result, its wear. In addition, the membrane in the accumulators breaks with age.

A radical solution is to replace the entire suspension, along with the torsion bars, with a conventional spring. The comfort from such a rework is reduced slightly.

After 200-300 thousand km, the steering rack may knock or leak. After 300-400 thousand km, you have to change the faulty power steering pump. The cost of the original is from 31,000 rubles, and the analogue is from 14,000 rubles. A repair kit for 1,000 rubles will extend the life of the pump for a short time. Sometimes you have to deal with the backlash of the steering shaft.

Not for the city

As for the braking system, its low efficiency is not at all a sign of a malfunction. This is a feature of "weaving". Nevertheless, the brakes are quite enough for safe driving on the highway and even more so off-road, but it should be admitted that the deceleration speed for urban conditions is not sufficient. The large mass required the installation of four-piston brake calipers on the front wheels. They are not very durable, but they can be repaired. Since 2004, all J100s have been fitted with rear disc brakes.

With high mileage, the brake master cylinder surrenders - the brake pedal begins to fail. The cost of the new GTZ is 100,000 rubles, and the "beu" is 20-70 thousand rubles. It is better to replace the node, since it runs very little after repair.

Reliability

Many examples have already crossed the line of 500,000 km, which, of course, affects the technical condition. The most vulnerable spots of the Toyota Land Cruiser 100 are the suspension and transmission, which require large investments to restore. Therefore, offers with a tempting low price and signs of malfunction should be avoided.

Unfortunately, age takes its toll, and corrosion actively attacks the body iron. At risk are wheel arches, side skirts, tailgate, rear bumper reinforcement, front wing shelf, windshield frame and fenders. Rust settles on the frame. Regular anti-corrosion treatment is a must. In addition, the brown plague also ends the pipes of the second circuit of the air conditioner.

After 250-300 thousand km, the electric drive of door locks and glass often fails. What pleases me is the absence of any systematic problems with the electrics.

Land Cruiser 105

TLC 105, despite the fact that it is very similar to the "weaving", has significant differences. It is based on the TLC 80 and was equipped with a dependent front suspension with a continuous axle spring. Instead of a steering rack, a gearbox was used. There are only two engines: an atmospheric 4.2-liter 1HZ diesel engine (R6 / 129 and 131 hp) and a 4.5-liter 1FZ-FE gasoline engine (R6 / 212 and 215 hp). The model was primarily intended for the markets of Africa, Australia, Russia and South America.

Conclusion

Driving a Toyota Land Cruiser 100 can be an ordeal for your wallet. However, it is difficult to find a more versatile and durable SUV for all occasions in life. And if something breaks or wears out excessively quickly, then, as a rule, due to frequent off-road trips.

The same 100 series body can hide three different vehicles. Simple and utilitarian pavement Land Cruiser 105. 105 series were produced as well as 100 series until the end of 2007. In the end, Kimych abandoned the idea of \u200b\u200bbuying the "stack" in favor of the hundredth series. These cars are largely identical, the differences are in the front torsion bar suspension, turbine and automatic transmission. For total off-road, the one hundred and fifth series is certainly preferable, but for mixed operation and thousand-kilometer marches on highways, the "weaving" is much better adapted, and there is an order of magnitude more comfort in it: both soft leather seats with electrically adjustable and a folding tailgate - the car is sharpened for the convenience of the driver and passengers.

Zhenya did not particularly fantasize about preparation, because everything has long been invented by thousands of TLC off-road tuning fans around the world. Therefore, ready-made solutions were chosen, designed for specific tasks.

We bought two sets of tires for the car: Mickey Thompson MTZ for summer and Yokohama Geolandar g072 for winter. Both are 35 × 12.5 inches. Tires of increased dimension required significant modifications, more than in such cases are made on the pavement "stack". The maximum possible lift of the suspension without changing the operating modes of the CV joints was 2 inches, the car body was raised to the same height above the frame, and the front arches and the bumper had to be slightly trimmed so that the wheels did not cling to them when the steering wheel was turned. The front suspension received reinforced OME torsion bars, and the stock shocks were replaced with longer and stiffer Tough Dogs.

Since weight is one of the main criteria for an SUV, Kimych decided not to get involved in weighing the car with iron. He limited himself to the installation of power thresholds necessary to protect the sides from logs and to facilitate lifting the machine with a rack jack. In the standard bumpers, platforms were mounted on which electric winches were installed: with a traction force of 12,500 lb (5670 kg) in the front and 9500 lb (4309 kg) in the rear. They can be controlled both from the salon and from the radio remote control. At the same time, the front platform came close to the bumper, and eye bolts were screwed in from the outside, which function as towing eyes, since the standard eyes bolted to the frame tend to come off with a strong jerk with a cable. Also, the car has acquired a derived air intake.

The steering is quite reliable. Moreover, both in the case of a rack and pinion steering gear for 100 series, and with a steering gear for 105. Backlash and sticking are most likely the result of damage during hard driving. And even then, you need to try very hard.

Transmission

The ode to reliability is a little overshadowed by the presence of problems on cars before the first restyling, most often off-road. So, on machines with independent front suspension, the front gearbox was sometimes cut until 2000, later it was strengthened.
