According to the data obtained, the IAC needle opens or closes, controlling the air supply past the throttle valve, which at this stage does not participate in the operation of the motor.

If the engine has not yet reached the set temperature, the controller with the help of the IAC increases the air supply, increasing the crankshaft speed for faster warming up of the power unit. Thanks to this mode, the car can start moving almost immediately, without the need to reach operating temperatures.

Technically, the IAC is not a sensor, it is an executive tool, so the controller cannot diagnose its malfunction. This means that the "Check Engine" icon will not light up on the dashboard if the regulator breaks down. In terms of their symptoms, IAC malfunctions are similar to TPS (throttle position sensor) malfunctions. But in the case of the latter, the icon will definitely light up, signaling engine malfunctions.

Among the signs that directly or indirectly indicate the incorrect operation of the idle sensor, the following can be distinguished:

  • the engine does not start well - it becomes impossible to start the engine without pressing the gas pedal;
  • when shifting to a neutral gear, there are "dips" in revolutions and their instability;
  • when shifting gears, the speed falls or the engine stalls altogether;
  • the motor does not warm up well at negative temperatures, since the increased speed (1500 rpm) is not achieved;
  • after turning on the power consumers (high beam, heater, air conditioner), the revolutions begin to "sink" or "float";
  • the engine spontaneously increases and decreases revs.

The IAC cannot be repaired, the device must be replaced. Before changing the idle speed regulator, it is advisable to flush the throttle assembly.

How to check the regulator

There are many ways to diagnose IAC. The most effective and simple methods for checking the Kalina idle speed regulator:

  1. RHX routine testing for performance. To do this, the device must be removed from the throttle assembly and the terminal block must be connected, if it was disconnected for dismantling. After that, you need to start the engine. At the moment of starting, the needle of a working device should protrude. If this is not observed, the regulator is broken.
  2. Checking the supply of the required voltage to the sensor. It is necessary to disconnect the terminal block from the IAC and connect a voltmeter to the terminals. After that, one person turns on the ignition, and the second measures the resistance at all terminals of the block. In the absence of faults, the voltmeter reading should be approximately 50 ohms. The voltage should be at the level of 12 V. If it is significantly less, this indicates a battery malfunction or an open circuit in one of the sections.
  3. Measuring the resistance of the inner and outer windings of the regulator. To do this, you need to use a multimeter. The measurement results should not be below 40 ohms and above 80 ohms. If you deviate from the specified range, the idle speed regulator must be changed.

Knowing the symptoms of malfunctions, you can diagnose IAC malfunctions in a timely manner and take measures to eliminate them. Although the regulator is beyond repair, it is worth trying to clean it. In some cases, this is enough.

Cleaning IAC

The work on troubleshooting the idle speed controller with your own hands consists in its banal flushing from carbon deposits. To do this, follow the instructions:

  • disconnect the wire chip from the sensor;
  • unscrew the two fastening screws with a small curly screwdriver and remove the sensor from the seat;
  • use WD-40 or carburetor cleaner to rinse the needle taper.

With the same means, you can wipe the contacts of the regulator and the entire throttle assembly.

When the driver presses down on the accelerator pedal, the throttle valve opens, allowing more air into the combustion chambers. Oxygen is mixed with fuel, after which the prepared mixture is burned. The more the driver presses on the gas pedal, the wider the throttle opens and the more air enters.
