What kind of engines will they be and are they afraid of breaking the timing belt?

The second Kalina received three petrol engines. They, as in the first version, will run on 95th gasoline. It is clear that the engine is more mobile, but what would you like to do when only 92nd gasoline is available at domestic gas stations? The "Norm" and "Standard" trim levels will include an eight-valve 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 87 horsepower called VAZ-11186. It will develop a torque of 140 Nm, which is more than that of the previous Kalina. Will it be equipped with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine? No.

A sixteen-valve engine with an improved intake system with a volume of 1.6 liters is available in the Lux configuration. The motor works in tandem with a five-speed manual transmission and is capable of developing power up to 106 horsepower. This raised a number of questions from motorists. After all, for example, in the same Moscow because of this, the transport tax will increase. To this question, AvtoVAZ employees answered that the torque increased to 148 Nm, and the engine became more responsive and high-torque in the operating range of 1000-2500 rpm. In fact, the words of the employees were confirmed, and the engine really accelerates the car well from medium speeds and more confidently drives from the bottom. Fuel consumption on the highway was 10.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The engine has a two-chamber intake receiver, which is designed to improve the filling of the combustion chambers at the intake stroke at different crankshaft speeds. In the new Kalina, the period of 15 thousand kilometers between maintenance runs was preserved, but the first maintenance with a run of 2 thousand kilometers was canceled. The main novelty, of course, is the four-speed automatic transmission. At first, it will be available only in the "Lux" configuration, and then in "Norm". The tandem of the Japanese automatic transmission Jatco AY-K3 and the 21126 engine with the parameters of 145 Nm and 98 horsepower itself is not new and is entirely borrowed from Lada Granta. This is not to say that the car turned out to be fast: acceleration to 100 km / h is achieved in 13.8 seconds for a hatchback and 14 seconds for a station wagon. When transferring from "Parking" to "Drive", the checkpoint twitches during acceleration, the automatic gearbox switches smoothly, obediently when braking, but with a slight delay switches to higher steps. But the reaction of the car to the addition of gas is special. The VAZ employees themselves said that they specifically applied more drive settings to the automatic transmission. At a speed of about 120 km / h, I added a little gas, and the machine quickly shifts down. On the one hand, this is not bad and the checkpoint does not "dull". On the other hand, the engine lacks traction and the automatic machine constantly changes gears. At the 3rd and 4th steps, the box does not drive well and constantly switches to lower gears with the slightest stirring of the gas. As a result, constant driving at high revs and fuel consumption of 11.8 liters were the same as that of a hatchback with a manual transmission.

For the VAZ engine, a unique cast aluminum crankcase was made, on which the lower support for the gearbox was placed. And for the installation of a Japanese automatic transmission, the shape of the lower suspension arms was changed. The car leaves the factory with a dustproof plastic apron; if desired, the steel protection can be purchased separately. All engines in the new Kalina are now equipped with a Visteon radiator, which is 15% more efficient. VAZ employees say that in 2010, in the heat during a test drive, loaded cars equipped with this radiator drove at full power and did not boil more than one engine. It is not clear why the VAZ employees removed the coolant temperature gauge. Now it's time to find out the answer to the most interesting question: what happens when the timing belt breaks.

All gasoline engines in the new product are plug-in, which means that when a break occurs, the pistons meet the valves. All engines have a lightweight connecting rod-piston group, which reduces mechanical losses and allows the engines to gain speed much faster.

Has the problem with air locks in the cooling system and leaks in the heater been fixed?

The leaking radiator was the most unpleasant problem for Kalina, because the engine was also flooded with coolant, which was located just under the radiator. In the new Kalina, according to AvtoVAZ employees, this problem has been eliminated. The car received a reliable heating radiator, the control unit was placed on the engine shield, away from the engine. According to VAZ residents, air jams in the cooling system were in cars with a cable-operated throttle valve. And so that the shutters do not freeze during a long ride at a constant speed in winter, the throttle block was heated by the appendix from the engine cooling system. Since the throttle heating channel was then higher than the expansion tank, air locks formed. However, VAZ employees claim that back in 2011, after the appearance of the electronic gas pedal, the problematic throttle heating was removed.

What is the noise level of the new Kalina?

AvtoVAZ representatives repeatedly emphasize that the problem of noise and vibration isolation is their priority. However, the result of their work on this problem is small. On one side, the engine and transmission were installed on German supports, and an additional muffler with a soft bellows was added to the exhaust tract. That helped. When tested on a car with a 1.6 liter engine and manual transmission and automatic transmission at idle, the engines work quietly and smoothly, without shuddering, and on the go, the noise level is moderate and increases as the speed rises. I was pleased with the installed Visteon climate control. Its fan runs quietly even at top speed.

However, once the car reaches a speed of 110 km / s, that's all. The car begins to howl, buzz, side mirrors and roof rails rustle. Such is the forced speed limiter. The spaciousness of the trunk, full-size "spare wheels", the layout of the rear sofas - all this has not changed. However, the luggage rack has been modified. In the station wagon body type, the speakers of the radio tape recorders on one of the sidewalls of this shelf were removed. This made it possible to expand the loading opening. Bag hooks have also been added. The folding shelf itself, when unfolded, rests on elastic bands and is attached to the door on removable ropes. Another new "Kalina" in full clicks the electrical relay. The reels of the glass elevator keys and mirror adjustments clink, the controllers click in the machine selector and under the gas pedal. Although we saw this on pre-production models and let's hope that the commercial vehicles will not be as noisy. In the old "Kalina" moldings on the doors quite often peeled off, the bulbs burned out, the horn broke from moisture and dirt. Has anything changed in the new Kalina?

VAZ employees changed the supplier of bulbs, choosing better quality products. At the same time, the VAZ employees noted that the dipped beam lamps burn out from frequent on / off. However, they promised that with the new lights, the load on the low beam lamps will be reduced.

The employees explain the unsticking of moldings by a marriage during assembly. VAZ eliminated this problem and the fit of moldings on double-sided tape will remain. The Klaxon has now been moved a little higher. So now it will last longer. And to replace the rear lamps, you still have to take up the wrenches: it is problematic to crawl into the cartridges from the passenger compartment. In the station wagon, on the fifth door, the heated wiper parking zone is preserved. The rear window heating sector itself is larger than that of the hatchback. Both bodies have a heated windshield.

Have the painting and assembly technologies, the level of body galvanizing changed?

There have been no radical changes. The volume of galvanized parts is the same as that of its predecessor. The new product also includes 38% zinc-plated body parts. A thick layer of protective mastic is applied to the underbody and wheel arches. The plant, as before, gives a 6-year warranty against perforating corrosion. True, on test cars, we did not see plastic fenders covering the arch.

What will be the clearance?

I would like to point out right away that the novelty did not become low-set. The clearance under the crankcase is 16 centimeters with three passengers in the cabin. At the same time, the car has a flat bottom, with compressed exhaust pipes and a gas tank. Protected fuel and brake lines. In versions with automatic transmission, the clearance is slightly lower than that of cars with manual transmission and is 14.5 centimeters.
