The ninth generation Mitsubishi Galant was one of the first cars that came to us not from Europe or Japan. This is a typical "American" modernized for the Russian domestic market. The Russian premiere of this car took place in September 2006, and sales overseas started two years earlier. Why did Mitsubishi marketers wait so long before presenting a new product on the Russian market? The answer was found quickly. According to representatives of the Japanese concern, before releasing the ninth generation of Mitsubishi Galant to Russia, all components and assemblies of the car were refined, taking into account the peculiarities of operation in Russia, which took a whole year and a half. As a result, 308 changes were made to the design.

The main ones are the ground clearance increased to 165 mm, the battery with a larger capacity for starting at low temperatures, as well as more powerful than in the American versions, the starter and generator. After another year and a half, Galant underwent a slight restyling.

The most noticeable changes as a result of the update were the exterior of the car - a new radiator grille trim appeared, and the fog lights became larger. In addition, the design of the rear lights has changed.

As for the interior, here it is necessary to highlight the appearance of buttons for controlling the audio system and cruise control on the front of the steering wheel (previously these buttons were located on the rear side), new materials for interior trim "wood-like" (previously - "like aluminum"), and also change the color of the illumination of instruments and vehicle control systems from blue to red.

Now about everything in more detail. After the appearance of Mitsubishi Galant on the Russian market, it turned out that in terms of price range, the novelty is on the same level with the top-end versions of class “D” cars, which include the popular Mazda6, as well as Opel Vectra and Hyundai NF. In turn, the size of the ninth generation Galant competed with more expensive and venerable rivals - Nissan Teana, ToyotaCamry and Volvo S80 and BMW 5-Series.

And so, we sit down in the salon. The front seats have a completely non-American profile - the lateral back support fixes the driver's body well. The driver's electrically adjustable seat makes it easy to find a comfortable driving position. Only the absence of longitudinal adjustment of the steering column reminds of the overseas origin. The annoying blue backlight was replaced with a "European" orange. Due to the fact that the buttons for operating the audio system and cruise control have been moved from the back of the steering wheel to the outside, it has become easier and clearer to operate them. The plastic of the front panel is soft to the touch, but the quality is not different. Despite the presence of a duplicate speedometer scale in miles, the instrument panel has good information content and does not cause any complaints.

There is real space on the back sofa. With an average height of the front riders, the rear passengers can safely cross their legs and not feel any discomfort. The width of the space is quite enough for three adults, but you will not envy those who sit in the middle. The back seat cushion is molded only for two, and when a speed bump passes, the central passenger can easily hit the ceiling with his head. In general, the spaciousness of the cabin is the undoubted trump card of the Mitsubishi Galant, which compensates for the rustic finish.

The luggage compartment with a volume of 435 liters is not distinguished by its large capacity and ease of use, primarily due to the not very good shape of the internal space and the large loading height. In addition, the transformation of the rear seat is not provided - for transporting long items there is only a hatch in the armrest.

The boot lid can be opened either with a button on the ignition key or with a lever in the cabin.

All cars supplied to the Russian market are equipped with only one engine, namely a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder MIVEC engine with four valves per cylinder and an ECI-MULTI distributed injection system. This power unit has one indisputable advantage, which is the automatic octane correction system, which allows you to fill the tank with 92nd gasoline. With this engine, Mitsubishi Galant produces 158 hp. and 213 Nm of torque, which is achieved at 4,000 rpm. Paired with the engine, only an automatic transmission is available, namely a 4-speed automatic transmission INVECS-II Sports Mode with a manual gear selection function.

You shouldn't wait for the dynamics of a 158-horsepower engine, so it is better to postpone the "traffic light" races. No wonder the car was developed for the American market. Galant's habits can be characterized by two epithets - soft and imposing. These qualities are manifested in virtually everything. But this does not mean that it is impossible to joke on it. Automatic transmission INVECS-II is able to adapt to the driving style. In dynamic mode, each gear turns to the red zone, and when the throttle is released, the gearbox keeps the revs, not trying to switch to a step higher in order to react faster to pressing the accelerator at the right time. In quiet mode, the switching occurs virtually unnoticed by passengers.

As for the suspension settings, the "overseas" habits are also unmistakably captured here. On the asphalt waves there is a rather strong lateral swing. The turns are passed with tangible rolls. With a slightly sharper approach to the bend, the tires begin to squeak plaintively. The most famous engines used in the Mitsubishi Galant are the 2-liter 4G63. From 1989 to 2003, various modifications of this engine were installed on Galant cars. Since 1987, production of DOHC versions with 2 camshafts began, engines with 1 camshaft (SOHC) continued to be produced until 1993. Typical problems, malfunctions and their causes

Different Mitsubishi engines have different vulnerabilities. What kind of breakdown the owner will have to face depends on what engine is installed on the Mitsubishi Galant.

Sirius series (4G63, 4G64):

In general, V6 engines are more reliable than inline engines, they have fewer "congenital" diseases, but due to their design, they are less convenient to maintain. It is more difficult to change candles, and they often need to be replaced if the car is fueled with Russian gasoline. Ignition misfires are often caused by deposits on the electrodes. Access to the timing belt is also difficult.

The main enemy of engines is low-quality fuels and lubricants. Direct injection (GDI) engines are especially sensitive to dirty fuel. A common problem with this type of engine is soot contamination of the engine oil. Soot is actively generated when the engine is in transient mode. The channels through which the lubricant spreads are clogged, soot enters the intake manifold and destroys the valves and candles. If you do not clean the intake manifold every 50–40 thousand km, the engine fumes, consumes more gasoline, and traction worsens. It is extremely important to change the timing belt in engines with GDI without waiting for it to break. Otherwise, the pistons with an irregularly shaped bottom will collide with the valves and deform them.

The main types of repair work

Mitsubishi Galant car engines may require replacement of the following parts and consumables:

  • hydraulic compensators;
  • oil scraper rings and oil reflecting seals;
  • timing belt or chain, tensioner roller gaskets, rollers themselves;
  • valve cover gaskets, cylinder head, engine oil seals, crankshaft, camshaft, engine filter, oil and fuel filters;
  • idle speed regulator, various sensors.

With regular maintenance, cleaning, replacement of consumables, use of high-quality gasoline and oil, the Mitsubishi Galant engine can serve for a long time without major repairs. The fact that he needs major repairs is indicated by a combination of such signs:

  • increased fuel and oil consumption;
  • noises during engine operation;
  • power drop;
  • unstable turnovers.

If the problems cannot be resolved after optimizing the settings, repairs are needed, during which work such as:

  • restoration of cylinder mirrors by boring or honing and selection of oversized pistons instead of their relatives;
  • replacement of piston rings, main and connecting rod bearings;
  • if necessary - groove of the crankshaft journals;
  • valve service;
  • refurbishment of the starter and generator.

If the car owner can perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on his own, then it is better to entrust capital repairs to professionals. With a lack of qualifications and experience, even a Mitsubishi Galant engine diagram will not help to repair it without errors.

In parallel with the overhaul of the engine, it is recommended to repair and maintain the cooling system, replace hoses, drive belts, water pump, thermostat, clean and repair the radiator. Engines and gearbox

Mitsubishi have always been known for their hardware, not the looks of the car. In the ninth version of Galant, everything remains the same as before, the quality does not disappoint. All models have 4 cylinders in the engine, they differ only in volume:

  • on DE and ES there is a 2.4 liter aspirated, output - 150 liters. from.;

The motor is good, but it is designed for a specific gearbox. The machine does not give much freedom to maneuver. Galant grunder

A year after the Mitsubishi Galant 9 was released, in 2004, the same company releases the Galant Grunder.


Grunder is more focused on the domestic market, and is not so popular in Russia because of the higher price.

Design and appearance has never been the most important aspect of the Mitsubishi Galant 9. People have always bought cars for the sake of build quality and convenience. Looking ahead: the latest generation does not deviate from the canons of the entire line, but there are some differences.

It's easy to get used to the location of the buttons and their number, but getting used to the huge steering wheel is difficult.
