Volvo V50: a safe shark that combines comfort, reliability and safety. Volvo V50: a safe shark that combines comfort, reliability and safety Crumple zone at high speeds

The Volvo V50 is a station wagon produced in 2004-2012 in Ghent and Pretoria. The car was presented at the Bologna Auto Show. The station wagon replaced the V40. In 2008 and 2010, it has undergone minor restyling. It was replaced in the Swedish company's lineup by the second generation V40 hatchback.

The car is based on the Ford C1 platform, also known as the Volvo P1.

It is positioned as a sports version, therefore it has small dimensions for a Volvo station wagon: length - 4514 mm, width - 1770 mm, height - 1452 mm. After restyling, the Volvo V50 has grown a bit. Matching the short length and trunk volume, which is only 417 liters, which is almost equal to the S40 sedan. Only the transformation of the cabin saves. You can fold the rear row of seats and even the front passenger row, which will allow you to transport bulky items inside the car. The roof rails are also worth remembering.

The station wagon was supplied with engines of 1.6 liters, 1.8 liters, 2.0 liters and 2.4 liters, running on gasoline and diesel. The most advantageous in terms of fuel consumption is the 1.6 diesel engine, consuming only 6.3 liters in the city and 4.3 liters on the highway. The maximum consumption of a 2.4 gasoline engine with 220 horsepower. In the urban cycle, it consumes 12.5 liters, and on the highway - 6.6.

The car was equipped with a 5- and 6-speed gearbox. But some versions were produced with all-wheel drive. It is he who allows the car to control movement on the highway and in the city. AWD allows you to park even where front-wheel drive is forced to surrender. Another plus of the Volvo V50 is the starting heating, which warms up the engine by a certain time, allowing you to start driving immediately, even in severe frosts.

The car is equipped with a combination of independent McPherson suspension with a multi-link. This provides trail stability and improved skid resistance on slippery and icy roads.

However, the Volvo B50 also has significant drawbacks. One of them is the dead zone to the right of the car. This can only be helped by the installed blind spot monitoring system, since this section of the roadway is not visible to the driver in the right side mirror.

In addition, at high speeds (over 120 km / h), the side doors, and even the driver's window, become excessively dirty. This is due to the weak study of the visor over the door, which should remove dirt.

Much attention was paid to safety in the wagon. ABS and ESP are not the only standard equipment of the car. The powerful braking system distributes the braking force to the rear wheels. The car body has become 1/3 stronger than its predecessor. The Volvo V50 is also reliably protected from theft, and the side windows withstand a lot of stress.

The Volvo V50 is available in four trim levels: Base, Kinetic, Momentum and Summum. The basic version is represented by power steering, seat adjustment, air conditioning, heated front seats, an on-board computer and an audio system.

The rest of the versions are supplied with climate control, light-alloy wheels. The Summum and Momentum trims offer an improved suite of safety systems, complemented by parking assistance and cruise control. They also have a phone with a hands free system. The most expensive Summum configuration offers a navigation system, a rain sensor and electric side mirrors.

The car was delivered to European and North American markets. In Russia, the station wagon has been on sale since 2004, but this fact has passed almost unnoticed by the domestic buyer, in contrast to motorists in Sweden and Great Britain.

The Volvo V50 station wagon (2008-2012) is a car for everyone who values \u200b\u200bquality, safety and plenty of free space. Despite the fact that the model appeared a long time ago, it has excellent speed characteristics and an attractive design. Thanks to this, even after discontinuation from production, the model is in demand among station wagon lovers.

Exterior

This car is built on the basis of and therefore you can see a lot of similarities. The not very large hood has small raised lines. Installed narrow headlights with halogen filling, which can be replaced with xenon. Between the optics is a small false grille with chrome edging. The bumper is really big in size, it has round fog lamps with plastic edging at the bottom.

From the side, the model looks good too, especially the rather strongly inflated wheel arches attract attention. There is a plastic molding both at the bottom and in the middle. The smooth top line looks good, as well as the rear-view mirrors, which are completely made of chrome. There are also large chrome moldings on the roof that you can use.

The rear of the car received high lights, made in the style of the company, they have a halogen filling. The boot lid is large enough in size, and in its upper part there is a flat spoiler, which has received in addition a brake light. The rear bumper is also not small, it has reflectors in the lower part, and already under it are the exhaust pipes.

Dimensions:

  • length - 4522 mm;
  • width - 1770 mm;
  • height - 1457 mm;
  • wheelbase - 2640 mm;
  • ground clearance - 135 mm.

Engines and gearboxes Volvo V50

A type Volume Power Torque Overclocking Maximum speed Number of cylinders
Petrol 1.6 l 100 h.p. 150 H * m 12 sec. 185 km / h 4
Petrol 1.8 l 125 h.p. 165 H * m 11 sec. 200 km / h 4
Petrol 2.0 l 145 h.p. 185 H * m 9.6 sec. 210 km / h 4
Petrol 2.4 l 140 h.p. 220 H * m 10.7 sec. 200 km / h 5
Petrol 2.4 l 170 h.p. 230 H * m 9 sec. 215 km / h 5
Petrol 2.5 l 230 h.p. 320 H * m 7.2 sec. 230 km / h 5

This car received 5 engines in its line, they are all gasoline and most of them are atmospheric. A simple 16-valve unit with a volume of 1.6 liters was installed as a base. It has 100 horsepower and a multipoint injection function. On the dynamics it is so-so, and the consumption is equal to 12 liters in the city.

The next unit is technically the same, but its volume is 0.2 liters more. It produces 125 horsepower and 165 units of torque. 11 seconds to hundreds and almost 10 liters of AI-95 in the city is too much.

Also in the lineup there is a 16-valve 2-liter engine also with multipoint injection. He is equipped with 145 horses and 185 H * m of torque. Acceleration decreased by 1 second, and consumption increased by half a liter.

Next, we see a naturally aspirated engine Volvo V50 (2008-2012) with a volume of 2.4 liters, which has 5 cylinders. 140 horses and 220 torque. The dynamics did not change in any way, but the fuel consumption increased significantly - 13 liters in the city and 7 liters on the highway.

The latest engine also features multipoint injection and 5 cylinders, but now it is turbocharged. It produces 230 horsepower and 320 H * m of torque. 7 seconds to hundreds for a car weighing 1485 kg is not bad. 12 liters in the city and 6 liters on the highway is too much, but not bad either.

There is also a fairly wide variety of gearboxes, there are 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions. Also for one of the units a 6-speed robotic box is offered. Some units are paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Almost all motors transmit torque to the front wheels, and the last one has four-wheel drive.

Interior

The engineers of the Swedish automobile concern, due to the use of a longer wheelbase and a transverse arrangement of the engine, were able to create a fairly spacious car.

The station wagon's salon can be easily transformed. The back of the split second row sofa can be easily folded in the same way as the back of the front passenger seat. When the seats are folded down, the boot floor turns into an absolutely flat surface.

Similar to the exterior, the interior has a sporty character. It combines Scandinavian minimalism with versatility and appeal.

The front panel is made in the corporate "flying" style, which was used starting with the S40 model.

Salon Volvo B50 is made to order in three color variations: black, gray and dark beige. You can choose the matching upholstery for each of the interior design options, and you can also order the front console with a variety of color panels. The most interesting version of the panel is considered to be IcedAqua, made of transparent plastic, creating a hi-tech atmosphere in the cabin.

The upholstery can be made from various materials. At the request of the customer, it can be leather or specialized Dala upholstery made of textiles with T-Tec elements.

The driver's seat in the car is quite comfortable - an ergonomic seat, the ability to adjust the steering wheel, a well-thought-out and easily understandable dashboard.

Suspension Volvo B50

The car's suspension is completely independent. On the front suspension, the engineers used spring struts, while the rear was a multi-link system. The rear suspension is tuned to resist skidding.

All-wheel drive modifications of the model are distinguished by increased ground clearance, a stiffer anti-roll bar and other shock absorber settings. These changes help to keep the car "sporty" and in the all-wheel drive variant.

Price

This car can be easily bought on the secondary market, the average cost is 500,000 rubles... When buying, you should look at the package bundle, because some versions, or rather the most expensive ones, will delight you:

  • leather upholstery;
  • cruise control;
  • electrically adjustable seats;
  • climate control;
  • hatch, etc.

The main advantage of the V50 is its spacious interior, which allows you to easily transport large enough items. The model, in comparison with its competitors, is quite economical, but at the same time it has quite decent overclocking indicators. The car is favorably distinguished by the safety indicators typical for the Swedish concern. In general, the model is ideal for those who want to find a safe, beautiful and spacious car with a dynamic character. And, despite the fact that the car is no longer produced, it will be popular among young people for several years.

Volvo V50, 2008

I bought a Volvo V50 due to the increase in the family. 2.4 engine with automatic - ideal for any situation, no more. This engine, with different settings, produces 170 hp. (revs up to 6200 instead of 5000 for 140 hp), but this is not necessary. My tachometer needle does not rise more than 4000, but for speeds up to 100 km / h the dynamics are "above the roof". The first couple of thousand km the fuel consumption was 9-10 per 100 (I hardly stand in traffic jams), now it is a little less. On the highway, when driving 100 km / h with a full load, the average consumption is exactly 7 liters. As it should be, I never added oil to Volvo (I do it once a year, I don't travel a lot). I drove 25,000 km in a Volvo V50 in two years, half of which were long-distance trips on different roads in Russia. The clearance is not great, but the belly clung a little. The handling is good for a comfortable riding style. I drive fast, but I stopped racing a long time ago. During this time, nothing broke, as, indeed, on the previous S40. If the car is after restyling in 2007, then all the sores have passed it. For the winter I took studless tires. In the snow, the Volvo V50 goes like a tank. All small errors in driving are intelligently corrected by the electronics. I repeat, it is fully present in the car. Beautiful, comfortable interior, ergonomics for "5+". If you are not taller than 180, then there is enough back room, now we are four of us - everyone is comfortable. The climate control is excellent. Electrical adjustments are all that is needed and not necessary.

Advantages : dynamics. Capacity. Ergonomics. Rich configuration.

disadvantages : you always want something more.

Volvo V50, 2007

I love station wagons, so when I got tired of the V40 and accidentally saw a Volvo V50 for sale at an attractive price, I immediately went to see it. At the time of writing this review, I have owned a car for two years, bought from a "trade-in" dealer. 2.4 l with a gun - good for the city, no more needed, less uncomfortable. The 2-liter V40 had almost as much power, but it wasn't very overclocking. The chassis of the Volvo V50 is completely unified with the "Focus", so it is relatively inexpensive to break it, there is a lot of "unoriginal", and the "Ford" original is very affordable. An illustrative case - I somehow broke a trailing arm in the back, a long one, I go online to see the price: "Volvo" original - 16000, "Ford" original - 5600. The suspension is quite comfortable, although it is harsh for my taste. The V70 is much softer and nicer. Compared to the V40, the insulation of the engine compartment has improved, but the noise from the wheels is terrible. Compared to the V70, the Volvo V50 has almost no sound insulation. The salon is beautiful, comfortable, ergonomics at a height, in general "5+". This is from the driver's point of view. From the point of view of rear passengers, everything is not so great - there is not enough space in the back, I can hardly sit down behind myself with an increase of 182. Maintenance and repair. Standard maintenance with replacement of oil and filters from "unofficial" costs 5-6 thousand, it is quite acceptable.

Advantages : dynamics. Nice interior and a generally pleasant car.

disadvantages : clearance. Rigid suspension. Noise isolation.

Volvo V50, 2008

I like the fact that the Volvo V50 emphasizes individuality. She is youthful and intelligent at the same time. Excellent (in my opinion) insulation. Good overview. Wonderful light. Good road holding. Great brakes. Fully stuffed trunk. For rest: a wife, a child, a stroller, a high chair, a cot and a bunch of things that a small child needs. I drove 8 thousand and so far there are no complaints about mechanics and electrics. Everything is perfect. I hope it will be so for the time being the new car, because already in the salon, when buying small options, I realized that this was already a Volvo and I would have to pay very decently for everything. There are downsides. Unpleasantly surprised by the already careful examination (already at home and during the wash) small "jambs" on the assembly. And the seams of the upholstery are visible and the plastic sits badly in some places. And somehow dangles here and there. I have a "mechanic" of 125 hp. Overtaking is rather weak. It picks up slowly and, in a working climate, eats 12 liters consistently around the city. Do not trust anyone about the top ten or less. But the Volvo V50 is doing great on the track. Cruising speed 160. While accelerating only up to 200. The steering wheel becomes heavy, the car does not twitch and does not float. Overall, I am very happy and in love with my typewriter. The wife feels great behind the wheel.

Advantages : bright youth car.

disadvantages : build quality.

A sports all-rounder for young, dynamic and demanding families

The new Volvo V50 is a sports station wagon and is derived from previous Volvo models, whose sporty design was complemented by practical features.

According to Volvo Cars President Hans Olov Olsson: "The emphasis has been on attractive design and sportiness, to which practical little things and extra luggage space have been added."

The design and equipment level of the new Volvo V50 has taken a step forward in the direction of the larger station wagon, the Volvo V70. The Volvo V50 is smaller, but offers customers the benefits of a large car in a compact format. Combined with stunning styling and excellent handling, this makes the vehicle an extremely powerful competitor in this segment.

The new car will cost slightly more than the Volvo V40, but this is offset by the fact that the successor has improved specifications for the base version. For example, air conditioning and power windows in the front and rear windows are now fitted as standard. Most of the options that can be ordered for the larger Volvo V70 are also available to buyers of the new Volvo V50. This applies, for example, to the built-in telephone and navigation system.

  • Brand new design

A sports station wagon with a special character

The Volvo V50 is a sporty and stylish car with an energetic character!

The Volvo V50 is a completely new five-door model with sporty lines, intelligent design solutions and a flexibly convertible interior - a modern sports station wagon.

    Unique profile with enlarged rear

The rear end of the Volvo V50 has a softer and more sporty design than the V70 station wagon. The combination of the rounded roof lines and the sharply ending rear end is designed to create a modern, stylish look. It is accentuated by a soft, rounded front end, a short bonnet and a racing-like cockpit forward movement.

The track and wheelbase have increased, the wheels have moved closer to the edges of the body. This enhances the sporty appearance and also increases the vehicle's stability. The large wheelbase allowed for wide rear doors.

The Volvo V50 is 46 mm longer than the new S 40. The body section behind the rear wheels has been lengthened to provide more storage space. The luggage compartment is not only spacious, but also practical and convenient to load thanks to the vertical arrangement of windows and a completely flat floor.

The front also differentiates the V50 from the new S40

The Volvo V50 has a completely individual profile while retaining the characteristic Volvo look. The familiar diagonal grille has vertical chrome slats and differs from the new S40's horizontal slats. The fog lights of these models also differ in design. In the V50, they are rectangular. The painted V50 headlamp trim has a lighter shade.

The hood has retained its classic V-shape. The body contours - the so-called "shoulders" of Volvo - are also inherited from other Volvo models.

These wide side bolsters are a feature of today's Volvo cars that create a sense of power and safety. The distinctive, high-positioned taillights speak volumes about the five-door Volvo ahead.

    Boat shape

From above, the body resembles a boat with a rounded bow, a wide middle part and a tapering stern. Along with wide shoulders, this shape gives the impression of being compact and athletic, and also contributes to superior aerodynamic performance.

The Volvo V50 has a convex door, unlike the concave doors of larger Volvo models. This emphasizes the compactness of the exterior and expands the interior.

Brand new windshield wipers are hidden under the hood. The direction indicators are integrated in the side mirrors and are clearly visible from the side.

The list of options includes a range of new wheel designs, some of which are only available for the V50. The sportiest are the 18-inch wheels fitted with 215/45 ultra-low-profile tires.

Sporty exterior - sporty design concept

The Volvo V50 will also be offered with a sporty body finish to underline the dynamic sporty image of this new model.
The package includes specially designed front and rear spoilers, side panels and a rear roof spoiler. Also included is a suspension kit that reduces the vehicle's height by 20 mm and improves the driving experience.

    Salon design

    Elegant and spacious

Unique, very thin front console (first introduced in the new Volvo S40) seems to float in the air, forming the upper level of the cabin. It connects the tunnel console to the front panel for a stylish and lightweight design.

Behind the front console is a practical personal storage compartment that is easily accessible from both sides. This compartment features soft lighting that enhances the free floating console and a sense of elaborate functionality.

“This console is the main design symbol of the new car and is truly revolutionary. The ultra-slim format of this technical solution was born from a significant creative effort,” explains interior designer Guy Bergoyne.

    Four trim levels

Like other vehicle interior panels, the front console can be ordered with a variety of decorative panels. This enables the buyer to tailor the vehicle according to their individual taste.

    • In the basic version, the color of this panel is the same as the main interior color.
    • The transparent plastic version, "IcedAqua", is completely unique. It creates a hi-tech atmosphere as it allows you to see the electronics and other technical stuffing.
    • The dark wood grain panel gives the impression of elegance and sophistication.
    • The "aluminum" panel, made of real metal, creates a sense of functionality and the highest quality.

    Multifunctional controls

The controls in the front console are functional and ergonomic. They are logical, easy to use, and usually feature rich. The upper half of the panel is used to control the audio system and the built-in telephone, and the lower one is connected to the climatic device.

Four large knobs allow you to adjust the basic functions of the systems. Other function buttons are combined into a panel that resembles a remote control. Each button has a shape that excludes simultaneous pressing of the adjacent button. The same design concept is evident in other parts of the cabin.

The sound system in the Volvo V50 can be complemented by the same advanced technology that was introduced in the Volvo XC90 - Dolby Surround Pro Logic II.

Lighting like in a cinema hall

The new Volvo V50 is equipped with several small soft light sources. Providing soft illumination to various areas of the car, they resemble those of a movie theater. In particular, the dashboard is permanently illuminated from the ceiling, but the light is so soft that it does not distract the driver.

The driver notices him only when he brings his hand to the control. This lighting makes it easier to use the controls at night.

    T-Tec upholstery

The salon can have one of three colors: off-black, gray and dark beige. A range of matching upholstery colors is available for each interior color.

One of the four offered upholstery materials is leather. Dala's most innovative upholstery is a textile with ribs, T-Tec elements and visible light-colored seams. T-Tec is a material specially developed for Volvo Cars. The idea for its creation was sportswear and modern accessories for travelers.

    Folding backrests

The long wheelbase and Volvo's characteristic transverse engine layout give the Volvo V50 a spacious interior. The interior transforms as flexibly as in the Volvo V70. The rear seat is divided into two sections, its backrests fold down. The front passenger seat has a backrest that folds down to create a flat surface. With the seats folded down, the luggage compartment floor will be completely flat.

    Engine and AWD system

Volvo's new sports station wagon, the V50, is equipped with four or five cylinder inline transverse engines.

New methods of downsizing the engine have resulted in a compact vehicle with high dynamic performance and great driving pleasure. The compact size of the engine also contributes to a very high level of passive safety.

The chassis has been developed in parallel with the new engines to deliver the handling that sports station wagon deserves.

    Volvo V50 T5 AWD

The top model in the V50 program is the all-wheel-drive turbocharged V50 T5 AWD. It is powered by a five-cylinder 2.5-liter petrol engine with a low-pressure turbine. The turbine produces extremely high torque from low to high engine speeds. The high, flat torque curve provides excellent acceleration.

The manifold and turbine of the T5 engine are cast in one piece from a high-strength steel alloy with the highest temperature resistance (1050 ° C). Therefore, the unit requires less cooling without additional fuel consumption. As a result, the engine can run on a leaner working mixture, which reduces fuel consumption and emissions - especially when driving at high speeds.

The T5 engine has a maximum power of 220 hp. and generates a torque of 320 Nm.

AWD all-wheel drive system for increased driving pleasure

With the V50 T5 AWD, Volvo offers AWD all-wheel drive in the compact segment. It uses an all-wheel drive system similar to that used in Volvo's larger AWD AWD models. Engine power is automatically distributed between the front and rear wheels using an extremely fast-acting electronically controlled Haldex fluid coupling. It is able to distribute maximum torque to the rear wheels faster than the front wheels make a quarter turn.

This instant connection and disconnection increases the stability of the vehicle's behavior and its stability on all types of surfaces. Stability is also enhanced by the increased weight on the rear axle when using AWD.

The AWD model has a slightly higher stance than the front-wheel drive V50 because the drive shaft requires more space between the chassis and body to accommodate it. A stiffer anti-roll bar and revised shock settings compensate for some of the center of gravity rise, helping to maintain the vehicle's driving dynamics.

Increased space between engine and passenger compartment

As a result, the engine is 200 mm narrower and 25 mm shorter than the engine found in larger Volvo models. This compact format makes the engine lighter. In combination with the transverse engine position, this also increases the level of passive safety, as there is additional space for deformation in the engine compartment. In a collision, the engine can move 150 mm backwards - only then does the crankshaft come into contact with the cross member near the engine compartment shield.

There is a clearance of at least 70 mm between the cylinder head and the hood. This allows the hood to deform smoothly, which reduces the risk of head injury to pedestrians or cyclists in a collision with a vehicle.

    Powerful, exceptionally smooth motors

The new five-cylinder in-line engines have a displacement of 2.4 and 2.5 liters, respectively. Five cylinders and a large displacement create high torque from low engine speeds and accelerate acceleration.

In addition, the long-stroke five-cylinder engine has a quieter and more pleasant character thanks to its low vibration and smooth operation.

    Transmission and chassis

    Transmissions from R models

The six-speed manual transmission originally developed for the Volvo S60 R and V70 R is now available in the Volvo V50 T5. The six gears have been selected to combine fast acceleration with a high top speed. The transmission offers three-speed synchronization and exceptional crisp gear shifting.

The naturally aspirated engines are mated to Volvo's new generation five-speed manual transmission. It has a three-stage syncronization for faster and more precise shifting.

    Adaptive automatic transmission

The Volvo V50 uses the same automatic transmission as the larger Volvo models. It is five-speed and adaptive, that is, it adapts according to the driving style.

Significant efforts have been made to ensure consistency between the drive shafts and the universal joints on one side and the high engine power on the other, and to ensure smooth power transfer during acceleration without jerking.

Chassis with properties typical of a large car

The Volvo V50 was designed in the same spirit as the Volvo S60 and Volvo S80. The experience gained from the groundbreaking Volvo S60 R and V70 R models also helped create this new compact model.

“We wanted to launch a sports station wagon that delivers an optimal driving experience,” explains Peter Everstrand. "Enjoyable to drive with a consistent ride quality."

The foundation for the performance of a large car is the five-cylinder engine. The independent multi-link rear suspension provides an excellent combination of comfort and ride stability. A wider track and a longer wheelbase (compared to the current Volvo V40) also improve stability on the road.

The geometry of the front suspension is carefully balanced to ensure quick and precise steering response and therefore enhancing seductive sportiness.

The electro-hydraulic steering is light, precise and informative.

The Volvo V50 can be equipped with a sports chassis (optional not for the AWD model). The springs with increased stiffness and reduced ground clearance increase directional stability during sporty driving.

According to Peter Everstrand, Project Manager for the V50 and the new S40: “Consumers have a lot to expect from a modern sports station wagon. We are convinced that the Volvo V50 will have a very pleasant driving experience. the highest torsional rigidity of the body. "

    Passive safety

The Volvo V50 is a compact sport utility vehicle that delivers driving pleasure and versatility. In addition, it has a high level of safety - both passive and active.

Like the new S40, the Volvo V50 has a very rigid body, a patented front end and an internal all-round safety system that gives this car an excellent safety performance.

    Crumple zones

Crumple zones of various grades of steel

“Our new compact models, the V50 and S40, have been designed to meet stringent safety standards,” said Ingrid Skogsmo, head of Volvo's Automotive Safety Center.

The effective deformation conditions for a compact body are different from those for a large body. Since the required deformation occurs at a shorter distance, it is necessary to make the most of the properties of the various materials in order to absorb the maximum amount of energy.

The front end of the Volvo V50 is divided into several zones, each of which plays a specific role in the deformation process. The outer zones are responsible for most of the deformation. The closer the impact forces get to the passenger compartment, the less the materials used are deformed.

Our goal is to achieve predictable behavior in most collision types. To give each zone the appropriate properties, the quality of the steel is varied. A total of four grades of steel are used. In addition to regular body steel, three different grades of high strength steel are used: high strength steel, ultra high strength steel and ultra high strength steel

    Crumple zone at low speeds

The front bumper contains a rigid cross member made of ultra high strength steel. The bumper connects to the front lower side members through a "fold-down box" body structure that helps absorb the forces of a low-speed collision without damaging the rest of the body shell.

    Crumple zone at high speeds

The straight sections of the side elements are made of high-strength steel, a highly flexible material that ensures optimal energy absorption. This zone is responsible for much of the collision deformation.

Volvo has also included upper side elements in the compact Volvo V50, which provide significant protection for occupants in the event of a collision, for example with a truck or platform.

    Amplification zone

The part of the spar that pivots outward towards the A-pillar serves as a barrier to protect the interior space and a reinforcement zone to reduce deformation. This design also reduces the risk of the front wheel entering the passenger compartment. The wheel helps to absorb collision forces. This extremely rigid part is made of extra strong steel.

    Connecting three power components

A rigid cross member connects the A-pillars and lower sills in such a way that an extremely rigid connection of the three components is formed on each side. This design significantly helps to preserve the interior space in the event of a strong impact.

The new front end is one of many Volvo patented safety solutions.

    Compact motors increase passive safety

The efficient packaging has reduced the width of the Volvo V50 engines by 200 mm and the length by 25 mm. When the engines are installed transversely, the narrower width increases the space between the engine and the passenger compartment. In a collision, the engine can move 150 mm backwards - only then does the crankshaft come into contact with the cross member near the engine compartment shield.

The Volvo V50 also has an internal safety system inherited from the Volvo S80.

The steering column is deformed by a maximum of 140 mm. When deformed, the steering column moves horizontally to provide the optimum airbag position for the vehicle.

Other safety features also borrowed from the Volvo S80:

    • Pedal assembly that displaces on impact
    • Dual threshold airbags

Side and rear impact protection systems

    Side impact protection system

The Volvo V50 is 54 mm wider than its predecessor, the V40. This increases the area of \u200b\u200bdeformation upon impact. The Volvo V50 is equipped with the same interior safety systems as the Volvo S80: SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), side airbags and inflatable curtains. These curtains also provide improved protection in rollover collisions - they deflate more slowly (in about three seconds) than the front airbags.

The side airbags are larger than the V40 and provide additional protection at the hips and chest.

A number of elements increase the rigidity of the body and reduce the penetration of its side parts into the passenger compartment:

    • Reinforced transverse tubular beam between A-pillars
    • Strong and rigid SIPS tubing in the seats and a deformable steel box in the center
    • Diagonal beams made of ultra-high strength steel in doors
    • The middle pillars are significantly reinforced and dimensioned for increased protection

    Rear kicks

The Volvo V50 has been designed to provide improved protection in rear impacts.

Volvo's Whip Injury Prevention System (WHIPS) is one of the most effective in the automotive world. In the event of a severe rear impact, the seat back and head restraint follow the seated person's moving body.

The seats and backrests are ruggedized. They are designed to withstand heavy loads, such as collisions with unsecured luggage. At the same time, they change their geometry in strong collisions, when the balance between strength and flexibility is important to protect people.

“Our seats are significantly stronger than those typical of the compact segment,” says Ingrid Skogsmo. "This is especially important on the five-door high-capacity model."

Protecting other road users and caring for children

    Protecting other road users

The Volvo V50 has a front end with sleek, streamlined surfaces and rounded corners. The goal of the designers is to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists in the event of a collision. Moreover, a shock absorption zone is provided in front of the bumper, which can reduce the force of the impact and prevent damage to the pedestrian's legs.

The hood and front fenders are designed to absorb collision energy. This reduces the risk of head injury. In addition, there is a 70 mm high crumple zone between the cylinder head of the new compact petrol engines and the bonnet.

    Taking care of children

Like other Volvo models, the new V50 has been designed with child safety in mind. The body structure and interior safety systems are dimensioned to protect the youngest passengers.

Both outer rear seats can be fitted with booster cushions for children over three years of age.

The front passenger airbag can be deactivated (this option is installed from Spring 2004).

The front passenger seat is already equipped at the factory with everything necessary for a rearward facing child seat. For this, special fastening locks using seat belts are provided.

Warning: never install a child seat of any type in a front seat with an airbag.

    Active safety

    Stable position on the road

The new body structure of the Volvo V50 is 34 percent stiffer than its predecessor, the V40. This torsional stiffness increases the stability and predictability of the vehicle on the road. The chassis design, which has a wide track and large wheelbase, also has a positive effect on vehicle stability.

The suspension is independent, with spring struts at the front and a multi-link system at the rear. The rear suspension helps counteract the tendency to skid.

New model Volvo S40 can be supplied with the following equipment

Volvo V50 can be ordered with:

    • Stability and traction control system STC (prevents wheel slip).
    • DSTC dynamic stabilization and traction control system (monitors the movement of the machine and makes adjustments only in cases where there is a possibility of skidding).

These systems are not included in the basic equipment

The Volvo V50 T5 will also be offered with an all-wheel drive system. Volvo's electronically controlled all-wheel drive system automatically distributes torque according to road conditions and driving style for more stable and predictable handling.

    Excellent brakes

The Volvo V50 is equipped with a very powerful ABS braking system with electronic brake force distribution to the rear wheels and automatic braking support in an emergency - EVA (emergency braking system). Ventilated discs are installed in front. The disc diameter matches the engine power (up to 16.5 inches).

    Projector headlights

The headlights on the new Volvo V 50 include low beam spotlights. The concentrated beam of light is surrounded by a halo, which helps drivers in the opposite direction to estimate the distance to the car.

GDL bi-xenon discharge lamps for low and high beams are available as an option. Turn signal repeaters are installed on the side mirrors, and parking lights are clearly displayed in the headlights and taillights, making the Volvo V 50 clearly visible from any position.

    Ergonomic driver's seat

A driver's seat with the correct ergonomic characteristics and optimal placement of controls and controls increases driving safety. In this respect, the Volvo V50 follows the company's well-known tradition. The car is equipped with a comfortable, ergonomic driver's seat, adjustable steering wheel and a dashboard with a logical arrangement of instruments and indicators.

Steering wheel controls for audio, cruise control, telephone and RTI traffic information system enhance driving safety.

    Personal protection

Volvo's comprehensive approach to safety encompasses not only passive and active safety, but also personal protection. The Volvo V50 has been designed to provide comprehensive protection for occupants and their property while driving and when parked.

For example, the Volvo V50 can be fitted with laminated side windows, which is not typical for a compact car. Laminated glass withstands very strong impacts and improves protection against penetration into the interior.

Keyless Drive - keyless car locking system

The Volvo V50 is equipped with Keyless Drive, a keyless locking / unlocking system with sophisticated features that enhance the driving experience.

The Volvo V50 can be ordered with a keyless locking / unlocking system. It allows you to open or lock the vehicle and start the engine without using a key. For this, the driver needs to have with him - for example in his pocket - a so-called PAD (passive authorization device). It is also possible to activate from a distance all the usual remote control functions, such as lighting when leaving the car and siren activation in a dangerous situation. Thus, the system provides complete freedom of action and quick access to the vehicle in a dangerous situation.

    Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS)

The Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) is an automotive innovation borrowed from fighter aircraft. This system helps the driver avoid distractions while driving.

For example, when overtaking or braking, the signals of the built-in GSM telephone and some other non-essential information are delayed until the situation becomes easier.

The IDIS function continuously records the driver's activity by monitoring steering wheel angles, acceleration, turn signals, etc. This data is processed, and at a given level of activity, information that is not essential to security is delayed.

IDIS is installed as standard on all Volvo V50 versions, regardless of the built-in telephone.

The IDIS system is factory prepared to interact with future onboard information and communication systems. The more of these functions in the car, the more useful IDIS is.

    Caring for the environment

Careful selection of materials and technologies

The Volvo V50 is produced in one of the most modern car factories in the world. The production methods and materials used are selected in such a way as to reduce the risk to the health of workers and people outside the plant.

For example, chrome-free materials are used for pretreating the car body, water-based dyes are used for body painting, and chlorofluor-based materials are used that exclude the content of carbon compounds.

The design of the machine uses technologies that ensure low emission of harmful substances, which allows you to reduce to a minimum possible negative impact on the environment. For example, this Volvo model has a low friction aluminum engine; The catalytic converter is based on three emission reduction principles - proximity to the engine, the installation of an air sensor (lambda probe) in both directions of the gas and air flow in the catalytic converter and the fuel vapor recovery system (EVAP).

    Low level of exhaust gases

The engine is equipped with a new, environmentally friendly plastic intake manifold. Plastic is characterized by a minimum heat transfer coefficient, which means that cooled air enters the engine and, as a result, a more efficient combustion of the working mixture in the engine cylinders is provided. The engine is equipped with lambda sensors of an improved design, heating the engine and starting in cold weather is better and faster. It also helps to reduce the emission of harmful substances.

The radiator fitted to the Volvo V 50 5-cylinder engine is coated with PremAir® technology, developed by Volvo in collaboration with Engelhard Corporation. PremAir® features a catalytic coating on the radiator that converts up to 75% of the ozone passing through the radiator to harmless oxygen.

New model will meet next-generation emission standards

The updated five-cylinder engines meet the next generation US and Canadian emission standards.

These standards are among the most stringent exhaust emission standards in the world. The introduction of new standards provides for the development of new technologies to reduce emissions of hydrocarbon compounds (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and requirements for the level of service life. Volvo offers new technology for five-cylinder engines that meet global emission standards.

    Cleaner inside than outside

Like all other Volvo models, the V50 provides passengers with a clean and healthy interior. A pollen filter is fitted as standard. The Interior Air Quality System (IAQS) is now available as an option for this compact model. IAQS contains an activated carbon filter. This system automatically removes contaminants and odors from the incoming air and makes the air in the passenger compartment cleaner than outside.

All materials used for the interior decoration have passed the necessary checks and do not contain allergens and other substances harmful to human health.

For example, the interior finishing materials have a low polyvinyl chloride content, the leather does not contain chrome, the interior surfaces do not cause problems for passengers with an allergy to nickel compounds, all fabrics are certified (the OKO-TEX brand is a globally recognized registered trademark certifying the passage of textiles or leather of the appropriate certification tests. The certification guarantees that textile and leather products do not contain allergens or other substances harmful to humans).
