If most roadsters are simply decorated with plastic from Brabus, then the owner of this Smart tries to avoid standard solutions in everything, going his own way. So, the Brabus lip of the front bumper is lengthened and received side fangs, visually repeating the line of the wing. The boot lid features an integrated duck-tail spoiler. The slim 10cm ponytail that looks like a factory piece is custom designed. Wheels are another story. This is a winter version, obtained by expanding the standard 15-inch wheels. The front wheels received 3.5-inch inserts, and 3 inches fell on the rear. Regular rubber, worn on such a hand-made, gave, and painting in gun-metal color completed the picture. In the summer, the roadster is changed to R17 wheels from Lorinser.

The width of the roadster's interior is only slightly inferior to modern golf-class models, so there is no need to complain about the tightness. Chairs with integrated headrests have a very good profile, but can only be adjusted back and forth. In the absence of handlebar adjustments, this could have been an obstacle in choosing the optimal fit, but it did not. The saturation of options is not at all about the Smart Roadster, be it at least three times Brabus and Limited Edition in the bargain. So only air conditioning, power windows and an electric roof. But the weight is a little more than a ton - everything is according to the precepts.

In move

With such an impressive appearance, it would be a shame to drive with stock 82 hp. under the hood. The roadster engine has undergone an impressive set of improvements in a Moscow studio that specializes in tuning and preparing Smart cars for various kinds of races. Head boring, replacing the intake / exhaust and increasing the boost pressure to 1.5 bar (1 bar in stock) gave 130 hp at the output. The Brabus version with its 101 hp beating hysterically, green with envy. In theory, this should be enough to reach the first hundred in 6 seconds.

I impatiently press the Start / Stop button, flip the six-speed "robot" lever to Drive and squeeze out the gas. Miracle did not happen, parallel starts with my stock Audi A5 showed that the acceleration of the roadster to 100 km / h was at the level of 9 seconds. This is just a second better than the original version. Who's guilty? It is known who, the damned "robot". No matter how much you charge the engine, this inhibited creature will surely ruin everything. Each shift is a jolt, a dips in traction and a waste of time. But to say that the money for tuning is wasted is also impossible. After all, the smart driver is alive!

The pickup at the bottom became noticeably better than that of the drain, in the upper rev range everything is also much more cheerful. In general, what is needed for brisk movement in the traffic flow. A nice bonus was the ability to skid the Smart at the earliest opportunity - such habits were never common with a stock roadster. Interestingly, the Roadster is not a tough furious Roadster. I occasionally steal from my wife her second generation Smart ForTwo at night, and I can envy that the suspension tuning went to the good of the roadster.

Hard rumbling even from a small hole, after which you immediately want to go to the service for diagnostics, was replaced by elastic slaps. But the roadster is also understated by 50 mm, but manages not to strike anywhere. Amazing nearby ... And all this - in the atmosphere of silence of the car two classes higher. Full vibration and noise isolation was not in vain, unlike the stock version, there is no need to yell at the passenger when the speed exceeds 60 km / h. But opening the windows is still worth it, because the sounds of the rare JanSpeed \u200b\u200bexhaust system and the turbine bypass valve are worth enjoying them.

Selection and purchase history

In 2013, Dmitry began to choose the first car for his girlfriend. It quickly became clear that nothing decent and four-wheel drive could be found for the initial budget of 700,000 rubles. Everything went to the fact that the rates would have to be increased to 1,100,000 rubles, and the first car would most likely be the BMW X1. All the maps were misled by a friend who suggested looking at the recently imported Smart Roadster from Italy. The model was so hooked that the very next day, forgetting about the original purpose of the purchase, Dmitry began to look for a car for his soul. The girlfriend was asked to learn the basics of driving in his own BMW.

His search led him to a company that has specialized in the sale and service of used Smart for many years. Good reviews on the Internet, a three-month warranty on the cars sold, service support - everything sounded convincing. Seeing a dream car in the price list - a black Smart Roadster produced in 2004 with a mileage of 78,000 km - Dmitry happily gave 320,000 rubles for it.

Repairs

The car was sold with German license plates, so it was not possible to go to another service for diagnostics. But Dmitry had to get acquainted with other St. Petersburg Smart masters very soon. The first breakdown happened in a couple of days, and then more. Roadster periodically stalled on the move, the air conditioner and heated seats did not work, the roof stuck. The list can be continued, but already quite a few ... Diagnostics at two other stations (there are only three services in St. Petersburg, specializing in Smart) gave disappointing results. MOT on the car was not done at least 20,000 km (with the seller declared 2,000 km after MOT), and the state of a number of units clearly indicated a twisted mileage. When analyzing the cabin, it turned out that it was pretty stained. The roadster has many places where water gets into the cabin, therefore it requires regular drying. On this instance, this has never been done, it seems.

But what about the "three month warranty"? As usually happens in such cases, it ended immediately after the money was handed over to the seller. Only problems with air conditioning and heating were fixed for free. Only after a visit to the tow truck was the malfunction of the crankshaft position sensor finally recognized as a warranty case, due to which Smart stalled on the go. In total, more than 200,000 rubles, two months of time and an uncountable number of nerve cells were spent on bringing Smart to life. From the main one: engine overhaul (70,000 rubles), replacement of the turbine (35,000 rubles), a new clutch (25,000 rubles) and an actuator (15,000 rubles). Typically, these works are carried out at least with a mileage of 140,000 km. Dmitry did not have any thoughts to give up everything - Smart seriously sunk into his soul.

Dmitry, on the one hand, wants to stop and transfer the roadster to the category of exclusively summer cars and enjoy the drive. But the tuning demon is constantly whispering one or the other idea. In the summer, after the inoperative air conditioner is adjusted and the exhaust mounting is fixed, the roadster will be waiting for a number of new improvements. If a few years ago Lorinser disks were exotic for Smart, now they are already mainstream. Already purchased are the new 5th generation Golf GTi three-piece discs and brakes.

Trying to bring a small car closer to human feel, optimal driving safety and comfort, and still be cool, will take as much money as developing a large multi-liter sedan. So what did the designers need to make the smart roadster small and fiery?

Exterior

When operating a Smart coupe in the Russian winter conditions, you may face the fact that the car does not start well if the air temperature drops below 30 degrees Celsius. If the pipe freezes and the oil goes through the dipstick, this will entail expensive repairs.

Let's look at the car

And second - if you modify the doors, then after that they are unlikely to be collapsible.

This did not suit the client. And so we decided to go a little bit of a compromise path. We decided to redo the standard places for the installation of our new CDT Audio CL52 acoustics


Another reason to do this is that there are decorative grooves on the plastic of the door trim, which we need to remove before re-sewing the door. And we make such a podium

and we start something else unusual. This is the making of a new stealth subwoofer.

In the car, in the trunk (back), there was an active subwoofer. There is zero sense from this arrangement. Because the scanty "eight" simply will not "break through" the distance from the trunk to the passenger compartment, which is occupied by the folded roof. In convertibles, it is generally difficult to place the subwoofer. We thought we thought .. we figured out an active sub and under the seat (does not climb), for the seat - also does not climb, because it interferes with the movement of the chair. And there is not enough space in the car and any restriction on the movement of the seats is critical.

And we decided to make stealth using our technology. We did about the same in , last year.


the idea is that we take an active subwoofer as a donor. The advantage of this solution is that such subs have noname speakers with a very small landing depth. They are very flat. Yes, this is not a powerful speaker. You can apply no more than 100 watts to it. But we are not chasing power. We have completely different tasks. We need midbass support from a subwoofer at low and medium volumes. And we need COMPACT.

As a donor, they took the subwoofer that was in the car.
