BMW E36 on-board computer repair

If you have such an on-board computer (hereinafter referred to as BC) and from a certain moment horizontal or vertical segments of the indicator began to disappear and in order to view the inscriptions it is necessary to choose an observation angle, and in cold weather some improvement occurs. The reason for this is a factory defect! Typical for this type of ammunition released in the 90s. Next, I will tell you how to overcome this problem at home.

The nature of the defect in copper oxide!

The indicator is connected to the main board with a graphite cable, the contact tracks on the board are left unchanged by the manufacturer - ordinary copper! So it got oxidized, most likely it entered into a chemical reaction with the adhesive of the graphite plume.

First, how to remove the BC. This is done quite simply, pry on the BC with your hand through the hole in the upper part of the shelf located under the BC.

Bend the upper part of the shelf away from the BC with any thin object and at the same time push the lower part of the BC outward, then it can be easily removed entirely.

Then boldly disconnect the connector and carry the BC to your home!



Now when the BC is on your table, you need to disassemble it by bending several latches of the case.


If you have a 12V power supply that produces a current of about 0.5A, then you can connect the BC at home.

To do this, you need to apply + 12V to three pins, if you count clockwise the connector contacts from the PCB side, then these are 9,10,14 contacts, and connect (-) the power supply to contact 11. The first pin is indicated on the board, it is at the top left!

On the indicator after power supply, four inscriptions will light up one by one: the panel is not connected; see instructions; temperature -37; enter the time.




Now to the point (it's a pity, of course, that I can't show all the photos, now I don't want to open the entire bookmaker and break not very well-fixed contacts):

To peck off, or rather even to say to tear off the bus, you only need to from the side of the printed circuit board !!! So
as on the indicator gold sputtering, but it does not oxidize.
Tear off the bus from the board very carefully so as not to damage its contact in place
sticking to the screen !!! The main thing is to do everything slowly!

To get to the bus, you need to suction the contacts to the backlight lamps. Then unscrew the two Screws that secure the backlight housing to the board!

When we got to the glass LCD, remember how the filter substrates lie!

The angle of separation of the loop must be chosen so that the graphite would come off the board and remain
a little on this train.

After that, the printed circuit board must be cleaned at the point of contact
tires to a copper sheen! The shank itself was neatly cut with scissors, i.e.,
shorten it by about 3mm, so as to leave the remaining graphite contact intact by tearing off, the length of the loop allows it to be done, there remains without glue, a clean, undamaged graphite layer about 1mm in length, this is just enough for excellent contact.

Then we put this tire on the contacts and fasten it with transparent tape so that the tire does not slide to the sides. There is a silicone soft pressing tape on the case, it must be peeled off and re-glued to the edge of the indicator holder-case so that it now presses the graphite contacts of the loop to the board!

On the case, in the centers of the printed circuit board, there are small guide posts made of plastic, so they must be carefully removed and instead of them micro-screws will be installed, pre-drilled the guide holes!

If the contacts are aligned exactly, and the silicone rubber band presses them along the entire length, then when you turn on the power, you will enjoy a high-quality picture from any angle to the screen!

I have a repaired BC tested by operation and frost-40 in the North and in the Crimean heat, everything is just super!

Shows integral for 100 km of track. Two registers can be
used to track consumption, for example, over the entire distance and any of its
plot.
- How many kilometers can you still drive on the remaining fuel. When value
dashes appear less than 15 km (it's time to feed the car). With the + symbol
next to km there is more fuel in the tank than indicated in km or a full tank.
- Average speed. The countdown starts after pressing s / r.
[A - TEMP] - Ambient temperature. May not be relevant after
parking with a warm engine (the sensor in the front bumper heats up).
Updates as you move. At a temperature of + ЗС when the ignition is turned on
a warning is issued (beeps). Means that at + ЗС it is theoretically possible
formation of ice on overpasses, etc. call for caution.
- Counts time 1 and time 2 (by analogy with flow rate). First in minutes:
seconds, then hours: minutes.
The maximum value is 99 hours 55 minutes. It's just elapsed time and nothing else.
Stops when the ignition is turned off and resumes when the ignition is turned on.
In cars equipped with parking heating (park ventilation), the time is set
start and stop heating
- Estimated time of arrival. Works only with data entered in DIST.

- You can enter the distance to the intended target. Just leads the opposite
countdown km. In this case, the arrival time is extrapolated from the dynamics of movement.
The countdown starts after pressing s / r.
- Speed \u200b\u200blimit. If the current speed has exceeded the set speed by more than 5
km / h, BC blinks and the LED starts blinking. A message is displayed on the board. About
refusal of the car to pick up speed.

The key to the radio position, enter the code from 4 (any) digits and
press s / r, turn off the ignition. This activates the hood opening tracking,
rear seat and taking out the radio. If one of the three is out of place, the LED

The next time you turn on the ignition, you must enter the code (preferably the same,

If there is a display at the bottom of the board (in the E34 for 520i and not for 525 td / tds), then all

The display sequence can be programmed.
To do this, press the switch and hold it for 3 seconds. PROG1 lights up.

Press the buttons on the BC, the information from which is desirable on the display. Finally
by s / r, while the information is cycled and it is not necessary to display all of it.
Use the km / miles button to select between costs. Similarly for two
ZEIT values \u200b\u200band time / date. If s / r is pressed immediately after the PROG 1 prompt,
the display will sequentially display all data from the BC.

Into another language.
First - the key is in position 2 - which is directly before the ignition - well, when the brushes are working, then hold the button that you have already said (symmetrically to reset the mileage), hold it for a long time, but not 2 minutes, it should work somewhere in 30 seconds. IMHO. And the language will change, you hold it again - it will change again (into focus !!!) ©, and so on until there is US English or UK English….

On the rear edge of the engine compartment, directly below the windshield, almost in the middle,
slightly to the right. You can see a gap in the plastic lining, open the hood.
You press the check control (symmetrically in relation to the reset of the odometer on the board

seconds (I omit cases with pallet breakdown). The manual requires immediate rest
engine, but if you try to start it immediately helps. It is worth thinking about
the next oil filter bought "cheaper".
3. Kuhlwassertemp - engine overheating. The stove is full

4. Hadbremse losen - take off the parking brake, STUPID !!!
5. Kein Bremslicht [NO BREAK LIGHT] - there is no brake light. Rarely lamps

13. Check control - analogue from the Microsoft lexicon: General
Protection Fauit. Leave the vehicle immediately by ejection. For
launching an Earth-Air catapult, open the hatch and fart properly

If + is lit on the board, then the bookmaker complains about more than one problem. You can read but queues by pressing Check control... Remarks: sometimes, according to BK, all the feet, dimensions and number illumination are covered. It is treated by turning off the ignition and restarting the engine.


Press the 1000 and 10 keys at the same time. The display shows TEST. Dial 19 and press the S / R key. You will see the inscription LOOK: ON or LOOK: OFF, depending on whether hidden functions are locked or not. If your LOOK: OFF is on, then you can proceed to the described fiction, if not, then you will have to unlock the bookmaker.
To unlock, press the DATE-key and you will see the current date, for example 19.12 (day and month). Add them up, in our case 19 + 12 \u003d 31.31 - and there is a code to unlock hidden functions. Using function 19, by entering the code you can block / unblock hidden functions. All functions are called according to the algorithm described above by simultaneously pressing the keys 1000 and 10.

Fuel consumption correction procedure (Test 20): This function is intended for correcting the average fuel consumption values \u200b\u200bof the BC.
BC data differ from real consumption data, then the correction procedure

The trip computer in the top three is optional. Many machines do not have it and it is the most expensive to install. On some machines, this toy is installed, and some of its functions and capabilities will be useful. There is no such thing on the author's troika, and I have never seen it in my eyes. On-board computer functions

(km C miles F) - Button to the left of LCD - toggles between English and metric units. - Ambient air temperature. It may not be relevant after parking with a warm engine (the sensor in the front bumper heats up). Updates as you move. At a temperature of + 3C, when the ignition is turned on, a warning (beeping) is issued. It means that at + 3C it is theoretically possible for ice to form on overpasses, etc. call for caution.

Bottom row

- Counts time 1 and time 2 (by analogy with flow rate). First in minutes: seconds, then hours: minutes.

- Immobilizer. The key to the radio position, enter a code of 4 (any) digits, press s / r, turn off the ignition. This activates the tracking of opening the hood, rear seat and removing the radio. If one of the three is not in place, the LED blinks invitingly - it is necessary to check whether everything is closed / inserted into place.

The next time the ignition is turned on, you must enter the code (preferably the same as any one at the beginning) and press s / r. Without this, it is impossible to start the motor, and after the 3rd start attempt, the alarm is triggered.
