  • cylinder diameter and piston stroke remained classic for front-wheel drive motors - 82 mm and 75.6 mm, respectively;
  • the diagram of the gas distribution mechanism of the engines remained unchanged - DOHC with two overhead camshafts;
  • the cylinder head, the connecting rod-piston group and the cylinder block have not changed;
  • fully preserved intake tract with integrated receiver, DBP and DTV sensors instead of DMRV;
  • attachments have changed in part - new pillows, a generator and an exhaust manifold;
  • improved engine cooling system, fuel injection.

The most important feature of 21129 was the new version of the ECM firmware - M86. As a result, gasoline consumption decreased, torque and power increased to 148 Nm and 106 liters. with., respectively. That is, the modernization did not affect the volumes of the combustion chambers of 1.6 liters.

Design features

Initially, the 21129 engine retained the design of the basic version 21127:

The advantages of the 21129 engine are:

To ensure the specified engine resource, the manual recommends using only high-quality lubricant from reliable manufacturers. The disadvantages of the power drive design are:

  • expensive maintenance due to the need for high quality oil in hydraulic pushers;
  • high budget for overhaul due to the use of ShPG and timing belt kit of foreign companies;
  • danger of breaking the timing belt drive to get bending of the valves.

The compression ratio has decreased by 0.5 units, which, it seems, allows to reduce the octane number of the fuel. In practice, the quality of domestic gasoline is unsatisfactory; experts do not recommend experimenting for dubious savings in the operating budget.

The most common complaint about Vesta is its talkative suspension. Someone complained about the creak when passing speed bumps, others had something knocking on medium bumps, and still others complained about tapping in the back.

AVTOVAZ acknowledged the problem, or rather, several problems at once. So, the unsuccessful rubber bushings of the anti-roll bar with strong suspension strokes twisted and creaked: to eliminate the problem, AVTOVAZ replaced the bushing material with another, more malleable, but durable one. At the stabilizer bar, a hinge clinked, the body of which was also strengthened, and at the same time squeaks were eliminated when turning the steering wheel. The sound of the rear suspension was reduced by replacing the shock absorber mounts.

Complaints about the general noise of Vesta forced AVTOVAZ to reformat the interior, install several dozen noise-insulating gaskets, change the fastening of interior parts and put felt fenders in the rear arches.

But Vesta did not stop completely, for example, some are alarmed by the knocking of the adsorber valve, generally harmless, but discernible for people who are used to listening to the car. Often there are complaints about the characteristic rattling of a 16-valve engine, in many cases natural, in others it is associated with one or another problem. For example, a chatter similar to the operation of a diesel engine may mean clogging of the valve pushers.

The VAZ-21129 engine is an adaptation for the Vesta of the 16-valve VAZ-21127 engine (106 hp), which is installed on Granta, Kalina, Priora. The main difference is the higher ecological class "Euro-5". Both engines are an evolution of the 98-horsepower VAZ-21126 engine: an increase in power is achieved due to an adjustable intake manifold. The cylinder block is cast iron, the valve timing does not change, the timing drive is belt driven, and a broken belt or hanging valves threatens to bend them.

The Vesta engine is by no means omnivorous and implies the use of sufficiently high-quality gasoline: for example, there is a complaint about valve stuck, presumably due to left fuel. References to burned gasoline are often used by dealers as well, refusing guarantees.

Sometimes the more sophisticated electronics of the motor present surprises. Someone complains about the failure of the electronic gas pedal, someone else's car does not start the first time. Quite often, the owners are worried about an unstable idle speed, especially on an unheated car. Interestingly, floating speed annoyed the owners of "Lad" before, as a result of which AVTOVAZ replaced the mass air flow sensor with pressure and temperature sensors. Apparently, it did not help one hundred percent, and the software of the VAZ-21129 engine is still waiting for a series of updates.

The robotic gearbox AMT was created by AVTOVAZ in partnership with the German company ZF based on the mechanics of the VAZ-2180. Multi-cone synchronizers are more durable, and all mechatronics are made by ZF. Despite the poor reputation of robots in general, AVTOVAZ preferred this type of box purely for economic reasons: even before the currency surges, the markup for a robot was two times lower than for the four-stage hydromechanics Jatco, which AVTOVAZ put on Kalina and Grants.

But, perhaps, the most insidious unit of Vesta is the AMT robotic gearbox: a large number of complaints of the same type boil down to one thing - strong vibrations when starting from a standstill. The cause is overheating and warpage of the clutch disc, most likely caused by poor calibration of the mechatronics. In fact, the problem is typical for robotic transmissions, and many eminent concerns, not excluding Volkswagen, stepped on this rake.

In the case of Vesta, two things make things worse. Firstly, even during the test, we noticed that starting from the place of a robotic car is very confident and energetic, but this circumstance, perhaps, loads the clutch. In addition, the discs used by AVTOVAZ initially did not differ in vitality, and even owners of cars with mechanics had complaints about the clutch smell. However, AVTOVAZ replaced the clutch with a more heat-resistant one, announcing the elimination of the problem.

In general, we are skeptical of a robotic gearbox: if, during a leisurely ride, it allows you to put up with pauses when switching, then in the afterburner mode, for example, when overtaking, traction failures are unnerving.

The mechanics of Vesta are native, Togliatti - the installation of French units was stopped last fall. And the VAZ-21807 box does not differ in particular survivability, although its repair is in any case cheaper than a "gorged" robot.

The owners of Vesta are unlikely to tell about the resistance of the body to corrosion, but the publication "Autoreview" properly salted Vesta in the chamber and found out that with good resistance of the side panels, trunk and hood of Vesta, the roof rusts in places of chips and scratches. However, the roof is damaged less often.

Of course, there were some incidents, like flying off decorative wheel caps and scratching side windows, but such trifles have already been eliminated. Owners complain about the "binary" heated seats (either fry, or almost not felt), unimportant wiper blades, faulty door switches and the quality of the head light.

A timing belt is a rubber part with notches on the inside that connects the crankshaft and camshaft to ensure the movement of the vehicle. The responsible owner of Lada Vesta, who traveled more than 50 thousand km, had to replace the timing belt at least once - so as not to prematurely find out whether the valve was bending.

Unfortunately, this ailment is transmitted from the engine to the engine on the Vase, it cannot be worked out in any way and on the valve vest it bends because of the knot: belt, rollers.

This assembly is vulnerable and the valve will bend if one of these parts fails. The situation would have changed, or not, the problem would have gone away completely - put the AvtoVAZ pump separately, but alas, the pump is in one unit on all VAZ engines.

If the hr16de engine entered the series, then this ailment would also be absent, it would only be necessary to go through MOT on time, monitor the chain, and yes, adjusting the valves, would again come into use for Vaza engines.

After a significant mileage of a car or incorrect operation, the timing belt often breaks. Oil getting on the surface, untimely replacement of units, using a car in severe frosts or, conversely, in a sultry heat - this can damage the drive of the gas distribution mechanism.

Damage can be found during the maintenance of the Lada Vesta. THAT consists in inspecting the condition of the node from time to time.

A rather significant problem for the owners of Vesta with 16 valve engines in case of a break is the bending of the valve. This happens after the timing belt breaks, or the links are stretched. Instructions for replacing the timing belt on Vesta

It is possible to carry out work on replacing the timing on its own, but this is laborious work.

Replacement requires the necessary technical equipment and experience in repair work.
At the beginning of the installation, adjusting the belt drive, remove its cover on the engine by removing 5 fastening screws.
We removed the cover and remove the belt.
Using the key "17", the crankshaft is turned by the bolts of the rollers so that the camshaft marks coincide with the marks of the plastic casing. We turn until the crankshaft pulley with the F mark coincides with the E.
The crankshaft pulley and stop washer are removed with the same key.
The rest of the casing is unscrewed with a "5" hex: 2 bolts at the bottom and 3 at the top.
With the key "15", the fastening bolt of the tension roller is unscrewed, after which it is dismantled in the same way as the bypass roller. New videos are being put on in their places.
Then a new belt is installed instead of the old one. First, you should make sure that the marks are still set correctly, then the belt is installed on the camshaft, stretched to the crankshaft with tension. For the timing belt tensioner, it starts up last.
With a snap ring puller, rotate the tension roller until the marks are compatible.
Next comes the assembly.

The new timing belt is put into the VAZ 21179 unit in the same way as previously disassembled.
