Among the disasters that supporters of buying a used, but premium "used car" predict for buyers of new budget cars, corrosion is a must. They say, before the buyers of "public sector employees" have time to look back, they will turn from owners of brand new cars into owners of rusty and leaky cans. But are there prophets in their own country?

We had to answer this question during the examination of the corrosion state of the 2012 Renault Sandero Stepway. In the same year, the car was bought new in Minsk, it was used daily, drove 46 thousand km since the moment of purchase. According to the owner, the car drove no more than 2-3 thousand km outside the city. Considering that this is no more than 5% of the total mileage of the car, it can be stated that the object of inspection is used mainly in the city, where in winter road workers spare no money to fight ice, which is why urban operation involves regular "bathing" in aggressive metal reagents. At the same time, again, according to the owner, Stepway visited car washes about once a month. In general, there is no better object for verification.

From the outside, the car looked perfect, and what is being done behind the outer shell, we decided to find out while the object of the test was waiting for the lift to enter.

Under the hood, corrosion was found in a battery niche, the neighborhood with which always poses a threat to metal. The shock absorber struts have also begun to rust. That's all, and although the catch is not rich, it suggests that other finds should await us.

In the cabin, it immediately struck the eye that rust chose the seat sleds ...

… And in the trunk there are fasteners.

Looking under the door seals and floor covering, we found small foci of corrosion in doorways.

However, rust has not yet touched the lower parts of the doors, and it is these elements that constantly appear in the list of places that get the most from corrosion in a variety of cars. But now Stepway drives into the lift, which means that you can see what is happening on the bottom, which is one of the first in the list of body elements, especially those suffering from corrosion.

We note that the bottom is treated with an anti-corrosion agent. True, the protective coating was not applied in a continuous layer, but selectively in places that the person who processed the car considered the most vulnerable to rust.

Usually this is the nature of the factory anti-corrosion treatment. Based on the results of the inspection of the machine, which has been under our examination, we do not recommend Stepway owners to rely on the high durability of the existing protective coating. Cracks were found on the coating in the area where the front anti-roll bar was attached. Their danger lies in the fact that moisture does not escape from them for a long time, which, having reached the metal, creates conditions for rapid and at the same time invisible corrosion.

But we found few obvious foci of rust at the bottom of the checked Stepway. One of them is directly above the rear suspension beam.

Another was the location around the access hole on the power cross member behind the front suspension.

Rust also appeared on suspension parts ...

... and the spring cups. With the damage that the tested Stepway managed to inflict during 4 years of operation, we were once again convinced of the correctness of the words from the Gospel that have become winged words, that there are no prophets in our own country.

However, let's give the prophets one more chance. As you know, the greatest threat to body elements is not external, but internal corrosion in hidden and because of this poorly ventilated cavities. In addition, hidden cavities are difficult to monitor and troubleshoot. We have an endoscope that will show what is done in such cavities near the object of inspection.

We did not see corrosion on the endoscope screen. But they found that the hidden cavities were also treated with an anti-corrosion agent.

Alexey Mukhlaev, the director of the authorized center for anti-corrosion treatment Krown, with whom we carried out the examination, noticed that the condition of this Stepway can be called ideal for a four-year-old car that was used daily and only in the city.

But in order for the checked machine to continue to remain in this state, it is advisable to repeat the processing. This is indicated by the presence of cracks on the old coating, and the fact that in places subject to "sandblasting", the coating is already worn out.

When buying a car, people must specify whether the manufacturer has provided for galvanizing the body or not. The reasons for this interest are clear.

Galvanizing extends the life of the metal and reliably protects against corrosion.

What other advantages of galvanizing are worth highlighting? How to determine if the body is galvanized on Renault (Sandero, Logan or Duster), Lada Vesta, Ford Focus, Opel and other models? What methods of galvanizing are in demand? Let's figure it out.

Benefits

The power unit of the car is characterized by a large resource, calculated in hundreds of thousands of kilometers. In this case, the weak link is the body.

After 2-3 years of operation, rust appears on it, which requires urgent repair and subsequent tinting of problem areas.

To extend the life of metal, car manufacturers and car enthusiasts resort to galvanizing metal, which provides the following effect:

  • Resistant chemical protection from external influences;
  • Resistant to moisture and chemicals. Coating the metal base with zinc guarantees reliable protection of the body and gives the car enthusiast a chance to forget about the problems of operation.

On the other hand, a number of disadvantages are worth highlighting here:

  • Full galvanizing is a minus from the point of view of ecology. Scientists have proven that such coatings are harmful and affect the state of the atmosphere and human health;
  • Body parts covered with zinc plating are prohibited from sanding and cleaning. Otherwise, the treated area is instantly covered with a layer of rust.

There are situations when paint lags behind galvanized. This requires the involvement of craftsmen who will remove the required layer and properly process the surface.

Recently, there is a widespread myth that galvanized metal does not rust at all. This is not true.

In practice, galvanizing inhibits corrosion, but even without an additional zinc layer is not a guarantee of salvation.

Few people know, but the zinc layer is a couple of microns, which does not allow protecting the bodywork from chemicals.

The zinc "shield" of any car, be it Lada Vesta, Ford Focus, Opel or Renault (Logan, Sandero, Duster), decreases over time.

Mechanical damage such as stone impact accelerates the corrosion process. But that's not all.

During operation, the metal is exposed to vibrations, shocks, which leads to the appearance of microcracks, dents, which act as aids for the onset of corrosion.

We must not forget that galvanized galvanized is different. Here it is worth highlighting the following options - full or partial, one-sided or two-sided.

At the same time, the methods of applying a protective layer are also different (more on this below).

In addition, each car has a group of hidden elements - racks, boxes and thresholds, where rust appears first of all.

So the treatment is good only in combination with additional treatment with an anti-corrosion compound.

How does galvanizing work?

As already mentioned, several galvanizing techniques have been developed. Among them:

1. Electroplating.

The principle here is to dip metal elements in a prepared electrolyte with a high zinc content.

The electroplating type of treatment is popular with manufacturers in Europe and Japan. But here it is worth highlighting a number of nuances.

Full processing means covering all metal body parts.

If there is no such attachment, then only some elements are processed - sills, bottom and others, which are more susceptible to rust.

But in the first and in the second case, the fact of galvanizing is prescribed in the technical specifications.

Galvanized galvanizing parameters:

  • Zinc coating - 5 microns;
  • Two soil layers - 5 and 20 microns;
  • Base - 10 microns;
  • Varnish - 20 microns;
  • Base - 10 microns;
  • Varnish - 20 microns.

2. Cold galvanized.

This type of processing is considered popular with a number of European and Asian manufacturers.

The principle consists in a two-stage treatment of the body:

  1. Surface coating with phosphate salts of iron, manganese or zinc;
  2. Application of a primer or paint with the addition of finely dispersed zinc.

Cold galvanizing is equivalent to high quality painting.

The craftsmen claim that this method of galvanizing is a marketing ploy. At the same time, it does not provide reliable protection against corrosion in case of violation of the integrity of the paintwork.

Specifications:

  • Zinc-containing primer - 10 microns;
  • Two soil layers - 15 and 35 microns;
  • Base - 15 microns.

3. Hot dip galvanized.

This type of galvanizing is done on one or both sides. In this case, the methods of applying a protective coating are as follows:

  • Immersion of a body element in a molten zinc solution;
  • Application of a protective composition to the body sheet at the rolling stage.

It is believed that hot-dip galvanizing guarantees the effect and resistance to corrosion. It is popular with Ford, Porsche and Volvo manufacturers.

Options:

  • Zinc coating - 12-15 microns;
  • Two layers of primer - 20-30 microns;
  • Base - 20 microns;
  • Enamel - 40 microns;
  • Varnish - 5 microns.

How to find out if the car body is galvanized?

When buying a car, people specify whether a galvanized layer is provided on the body or not.

It is worth highlighting two ways of determining:

1. Using the capabilities of special equipment.

For a single application, this option is not justified, because the cost of the device is high. In fairness, it should be noted that not even all service stations buy such devices.

If the device is at the disposal of the service, then the cost of the check will be such that it is easier to add money and buy a car whose body is accurately galvanized.

2. Study of technical documentation.

As a rule, manufacturers indicate the presence of galvanized and the type. In addition, it is prescribed whether the body is fully galvanized or only partially.

When choosing the second option, consider the following rules:

1. On cheap cars, the method of galvanic or hot-dip galvanizing is not used due to the high cost of the process;

2. If it is stated in the manual that the body is galvanized, then this may indicate the following:

3. The car is galvanized in compliance with the rules only if the instructions indicate complete processing.

4. Do not forget to go to the Internet and check if the car body is really galvanized or if this is an advertising move by the seller in order to get rid of the "iron horse".

Below we will consider some models and nuances of galvanizing:

  1. Renault Sandero has a partial body finish. Type - zinc metal. During the processing, a layer of oxides containing zinc elements is applied. Protection is enough for an average of 5-6 years.

  2. Renault Duster has a partial finish. Type - cycrometal. It uses the technique of spraying a layer containing zinc particles or applying protection at the rolling stage. The quality is acceptable, but the first corrosion often appears after 2-3 years.

  3. Renault Logan. Latest models from 2013 onwards are fully processed. Method - galvanic (double-sided) galvanizing. The principle of operation is to immerse the body elements in zinc electrolyte and apply current. The final zinc spraying layer is 9-15 microns. The average service life of the body without corrosion is 7-8 years.

  4. Hyundai Solaris. The body of these vehicles is processed by cold galvanizing. The method involves the application of a zinc containing coating. Average service life without corrosion is 4-5 years.

  5. ... Since 2014, the manufacturer has been using the hot-dip galvanizing method for the entire body. The principle is to immerse metal elements in a zinc compound. The finished assembly has a zinc layer with a thickness of 2 to 10 microns. According to the developers, the first traces of rust will appear only after 20-22 years.

A varied and harsh climate with serious requirements for anti-corrosion treatment of their vehicles. Sudden changes in temperature, high air humidity, salt, anti-icing agents can eat a car body in a few years. For this reason, in order to take a solid place in the Russian market, the designers of the Renault Logan car had to thoroughly smash their heads. But first things first.

Renault Logan I generation

The Renault Logan car began its journey on Russian roads in 2005, then a completely new model was uncertainly occupying the automotive market, gaining the trust of potential buyers. In the first year of serial production of cars, problem areas appeared on a certain percentage of cars in the form of spots and traces of corrosion on various parts of the body.

Problem places

These turned out to be: wheel arches, trunk opening, windshield frame and parts of the roof under the door seals. And among other things, cracks were found on the paintwork in the area of \u200b\u200bthe joints of the rear pillars and the roof of the car. As they say, the first pancake turned out to be lumpy. However, due to the fact that the release of the new model was widely announced by the media, and caused a great stir, such problems in Renault Logan were overgrown not only with many myths and rumors, but were sometimes exaggerated altogether.

One of the most problematic areas of old Logan is the doors

Pots of corrosion appeared on cars produced mainly in the period from 2005 to 2006. Formally speaking, such violations in the paintwork (paintwork) did not require any warranty service, because they manifested themselves after its completion.

Often the doorway begins to rust

However, the fact remains, and the real problem has been identified. Then the Renault concern took unprecedented measures to extend the warranty for paintwork, and in order not to lose the confidence of buyers, it recognized all the facts of the appearance of corrosion as a warranty case.

Car bottom

The underbody of the car practically does not suffer from rust. Clearance allows less clinging to bumps in the road and scratching the bottom from bumps.

The decision to fully galvanize the body

The concern claims that the Renault Logan body is galvanized during production, but many Renault Logan owners do not trust this information

In order not to experience problems with the cars produced in the future, it was decided to galvanize almost all external parts.

In addition, for the purpose of additional protection of the body, the technology of "sacrificial anodes" was used, which were installed mainly in the door hinges in the form of inserts and corroded instead of iron. The warranty for the car's anti-corrosion protection is within 15 years, which is a sufficient period even for cars of a more expensive price segment.

A piece of paint flew off the wing, a galvanized body is visible, but rust still began to appear

The result from the work done by the Renault concern was not long in coming. Rumors about a new budgetary and inexpensive car, with a galvanized body, quickly spread among the people and rightfully lost claims about the quality of the coating on the Logans. Few modern automakers can boast of such a result in the field of service and understanding of their customers' problems.

7 layers of zinc

Most owners agree that the Renault Logan body is well galvanized and practically not subject to corrosion.

When designing the radically changed appearance of the 2nd generation Renault Logan car, the designers looked differently at the anti-corrosion treatment of the body.

From 2013 to the present, on Renault conveyors, Logan models are subjected to full body treatment, including hidden cavities by double-sided galvanized galvanizing (perfectly combined with paint and soil) using the method of immersion in zinc electrolyte under the influence of current.

Rust on Logan who is less than a year old (under the front right door - under the trim)

With this treatment, the zinc layer is about 9-15 microns. Thus, under normal operating conditions, the first traces of corrosion may appear no earlier than after 10 years of using the car.

Only numbers!

  • 5-15 microns (micrometers) is the ideal zinc coating thickness to protect against corrosion on a vehicle.
  • From 1 to 6 microns - this is the rate of destruction of the zinc layer per year, in case of damage to the paintwork. Destruction occurs more actively at positive temperatures.

Summing up

Summing up all of the above, you can be sure that most P cars eno Logan on our roads have a galvanized body with a high degree of corrosion protection... Having such a car, you can be prepared for all the troubles of the Russian climate and operating conditions.
