I already wrote about how, and today the story is about a car that marks the segment of family SUVs. With seven seats, but without excessive cross-country ability and brutality.

Chervrolet Captiva is simply an ideal representative of this class: simple and large interior, good asphalt habits, seven seats and a relatively low price by the standards of the class. Moreover, it was possible to purchase a simple front-wheel drive version if snow and mud were excluded in principle. Actually, in this format, the car was created not at all for Russia, but for the United States. However, we also have a large and inexpensive car, as they say, "went" - its production was even set up at the company's St. Petersburg plant.

Structurally, the Captiva and the soplatform Opel Antara with the Cadillac SRX are clean cars: the engine is transversely in front, and the suspensions are completely light - MacPherson strut front and an L-shaped arm, and a multi-link at the back. The salon is simply huge, and the rear and middle row seats fold down to form a flat floor, and even the right passenger seat has a "tricky" backrest that can be folded flush with the resulting platform. The third row, of course, is not very spacious, but on cars of this size, it is designed more for children than for fully accommodating adults.

But even in the seven-seater version, the trunk has a larger volume than that of other C-class hatches. The rear axle drive is connected via a JTEKT coupling. It uses the same ITCC system and the same purely electromagnetic clutch that was installed on the Toyota RAV4. The system is simple and reliable, but does not like slipping very much - for a moment it is enough from the motor, but it does not tolerate torsional vibrations of the transmission and overheats instantly.

Electronic assistants

After the 2011 update, the Hill Descent Control system and the hill start assistant for cars with manual transmission appeared. The forced blocking of the drive clutch was never added. But the stabilization system was updated, which was important for a fast and tall car. In the model's main market, the United States, housewives were more likely to drive than tough macho racers. The handling of the car, by the way, turned out to be quite good, despite the visually very high and narrow body. Not very large rolls, rather sharp taxiing and even a slight tendency to oversteer in extreme conditions - apparently, it was because of it that the stabilization was in the basic configuration.

Motors

What cannot be said about the car at first glance is that it is one of the most powerful crossovers in its class. Initially, the top-end configuration was supplied with a 3.2 V6 engine with 230 hp, and after restyling, it was replaced by another 3.0-liter V6, which developed, depending on the market, from 249 to 283 hp. A slightly more momentary, but not more powerful, 3.6-liter engine was also installed on cars for the United States, which essentially differed little from the first two. Post-styling diesels also showed record power - the older version of the engine developed as much as 184 hp.

Less powerful motors were also enough. Petrol "fours" with a volume of 2.4 liters until 2011 developed not impressive 136 hp, and after that the engine was replaced with a completely new one, but the same working volume, with a capacity of 167 hp. Diesels 2 liters 150 forces from the car before the restyling of the Italian design. These motors are rare under the hood of other GM cars, but they are often found on Hyundai / Kia models. After restyling, the engine volume increased to 2.2 liters and two power gradations appeared - the top engine 184 hp. and weaker, developing "only" 163.

Restyling

Chervrolet Captiva 2006–2011

The 2011 update didn't just affect the motors. The style of the car has radically changed, the soft and not very expressive appearance was transformed by a new radiator grill and bumper, making the car much more aggressive and noticeable. And the five-speed automatic transmissions made by Aisin were replaced by GM's own gearboxes, which turned out to be not the best solution. The second restyling of 2013 did not bring significant technical changes, and the appearance has changed almost imperceptibly.

Breakdowns and problems in operation

Body and interior

The body of GM Korea cars does not differ in a particularly durable paintwork, but even at the age of ten, there are no obvious problems with corrosion. The new GM standard affects the quality of protection of steel structures. What is needed here is galvanized, and something else is covered with a thick layer of mastic and plastic. They only forgot about the fifth door, and some of the seams in the engine compartment may have damage to the sealant and traces of corrosion already at the age of several years.

A clear disadvantage is that the thickness of the metal of the outer panels is not impressive, they bend well with a finger. This is all the more strange because the weight of the car is more than one and a half hundred kilograms more than that of its main competitors. But according to the reviews of those who have visited the Captiva in serious accidents, the secret is revealed: the car has a very solid foundation, more reminiscent of the design of the side members of serious "crooks" than a light crossover. The noise isolation, which adds weight, is also very high-quality - even the role model in this class, the RAV4 of the second and third generations, turned out to be much noisier. However, the salons of the platform-based Antara and SRX are even quieter, so Captiva is still far from the limit of perfection.

The interior is quite simple - there is decent, but not great plastic, cheap leather and simple high-quality fabric. The cheaper Chevrolet styling greatly understates the car, distancing it from the more expensive Opel and Cadillacs. It is especially insulting for the quality of the seats - a more noble profile would not hurt the driver. In the process of restyling, the interior was "refined", making it visually more expensive, but, unfortunately, this modernization did not affect the seats.

Electrician

The electrical equipment of the body and interior is not completely problem-free, although it does not present expensive troubles - this is generally typical for GM cars. Worse, the under-hood wiring and underbody electronics suffer quite a bit. The engine compartment "braid" is too "delicate" - sand trapped in the corrugations after several years of operation can cause numerous violations of the wire insulation and equally numerous failures in the on-board systems - and mainly in the engine.

After driving off-road, it is recommended to thoroughly rinse the engine compartment and generally keep it clean. By the way, a lot of troubles are created by "sweating" motors - traces of grease over time heavily pollute the compartment from below and allow sand to linger inside. The wiring to the ABS sensors and the AWD clutch is also vulnerable. After forcing fords and serious puddles, it is recommended to check the tightness of the connectors or at least once every couple of years to put grease in them. Severely worn front optics, a leaky brake light on the rear door, poor wiring of the rear license plate lights are in general characteristic of all inexpensive cars, you should not take them as a serious drawback of the model. Well, there are no failures of the on-board multimedia system here simply because of its simplicity.

Chassis

Car suspensions for passenger cars can be considered exemplary reliable and inexpensive, moreover. They even withstand off-road trips without much damage, unless, of course, they are driven over the ground and pits in a loaded car. However, the reliability of the shock absorbers is below average - after 30-40 thousand mileage, they will lose efficiency, and the car's handling will noticeably deteriorate. You can reach 100-150 thousand with a "native" kit, they will not flow if you do not overheat them, but the pleasure of driving is not the same.

The stabilizer struts are a consumable, like the bushings. With an active movement style, they have to be changed at every second TO, if you do not want to listen to their knocking. By the way, its reason may be not only in the suspension - there is a very "delicate" steering rack, which begins to knock at runs over 50 thousand. But if you monitor the fluid level in the power steering expansion tank, it can work in this state for a very long time - backlashes are minimal, and leaks are usually almost invisible. The power steering pump is not very reliable, but pumps from Opel cars are perfect with minimal alteration, although they "do not beat" by the code. This will come in handy if the owner of the car missed the ATP level in the tank at least once, because the part does not differ in reliability.

Transmission

The reliability of the transmissions can be generally assessed as average. Manual gearboxes generally do not cause any special problems - you just need to monitor the oil level, because it is quite traditional for GM boxes to "sweat" with oil. The strength of the front CV joints and drives is sufficient, except that with a 3.6 engine and a top-end diesel engine there are cases of "cutting" the splines on the shafts - most likely, one of the drives was not very successful. At the same time, the hinges themselves are reliable, withstand even short-term work with a torn cover, but here it is important to notice oil drips in time. The SHRUS covers themselves are too "gentle", they break easily off-road. The same problem is with the propeller shaft on all-wheel drive versions, it usually fails the rubber intermediate support, and after it the bearing. Theoretically, with such a breakdown, it is necessary to replace the propeller shaft entirely, but in fact there is quite a propeller shaft bearing with a dimension of 71.4 * 24.6, which can be found even on GAZ cars, and a repair insert for an elastic band can also be bought. It is more difficult to break the clutch, because it turns off at the slightest attempt to overheat - the emergency mode starts already at 94 degrees. It does not have a separate radiator, as well as a complex hydraulic system. Failures are usually associated with a failure of the electronics of the control system, which entails a failure of the mechanical part. The rear gearbox is also quite "gentle", it does not like starts "gas to the floor" on the asphalt and sometimes fails with V6 engines.

The type of automatic transmission and its reliability depend on the year of manufacture. Before restyling, there was an Aisin AW55-51, well-known and. I have already written about the features of its operation, but I will repeat: it does not like overheating very much, has a small resource of blocking linings for the gas turbine engine and a very "delicate" valve body. Captiva got the last revision of the box, which was mostly problem-free. With a calm driving style and a serviceable engine cooling system, it has a chance of 150-200 thousand mileage without much hassle, with active pedaling, you will need more frequent oil changes, at least once every 40 thousand kilometers, and replacement of the gas turbine engine linings at the first signs of wear.

After restyling in 2011, a new "six-stage" of GM's own production of the 6T45 / 6T40 series was delivered. Unlike the Japanese automatic transmission, it turned out to be more twitchy, more prone to overheating, with an even smaller resource of the gas turbine engine and serious problems with the liners of the box itself. In addition, in the first years of production, there were enough "children's" problems with the valve body, and the cooling system was left the same, which was clearly not enough in the new box. As a result, restyled cars have every chance of getting into the "box" service earlier than dorestayl. There are often cases of failures during the warranty period, with very low mileage. True, the box is a little simpler for minor repairs, they are cheaper. But if the bushings are damaged, an extremely costly operation will have to be done - it is often easier to change the box assembly.

Motors

One of the great advantages of cars before restyling is, oddly enough, the weakest 2.4 engine. After all, this is an old Opel engine, only with a very "clamped" firmware and bored out to a volume of 2.4. The motor itself is extremely reliable - it has a cast-iron block that is resistant to overheating and other troubles, a strong piston group, a simple control system and an inexpensive "piping". For those who lack 136 strength, there are many tuning developments, ranging from shafts from the X20XER and Z22XE engines to the Red Top cylinder head with a C20XE with a serious rework and even installing a turbocharger. In addition, consumables for it can be found in almost any village, and mechanics know it, because this series of engines has been produced for a good twenty years.

The newer 2.4 motor is also familiar to all opelevoders - those who have seen the Z22SE series motors, for example. This is a more modern design, with a timing chain and balance shafts in the block. And at the same time - without repair dimensions, with an unpredictable timing resource, expensive parts, etc. But in general, the engine is very resourceful and, moreover, much more powerful in stock. Particular attention should be paid to the timing resource - it is the main supplier of problems here. If something rings on a cold one, then it would be better to immediately find 40-60 thousand rubles to replace the entire set, otherwise it can pull out the weak pins of the tensioners or dampers, grind the front cover, and in especially severe cases the timing phases are violated or the chain simply breaks ... There are ceramic valve guides in the block head, so you can't get away with a little blood - most likely you will need expensive repair or replacement. Unfortunately, it is impossible to say when the thunder will strike - usually the chains are all 120-150 thousand. This, of course, is not much, but by modern standards, it is quite a decent result. However, sometimes problems start already at 40-60 thousand mileage. Fortunately, craftsmen are familiar with these problems from structurally similar Opel engines, and there are ways to make repairs cheaper, moreover, avoiding the repetition of problems in the future. Rarer V6 engines are also familiar from Opel and GM cars. Engines of 3.2 and 3.6 liters are “relatives” of Opel Vectra 2.8T and Alfa Romeo 3.2. These highly reliable motors have several weak points. Firstly, the resource of the timing chain is limited here - it is unlikely to pass more than 150 thousand kilometers. Moreover, the cost of two circuits and four phase shifters is comparable to the price of a contract motor.

Secondly, motors are prone to overheating, and the slightest contamination of the radiators or the failure of one of the fans immediately takes the temperature into the red zone. After that, the engine almost always acquires a good oil "appetite", which can only be defeated by a bulkhead. And the ignition modules fail even if there is not much overheating, just the temperature rise in the engine compartment due to the installation of the crankcase protection may be enough for the replacement of the MH to become regular. By the way, a feature of cars with V6 before restyling is also a very expensive exhaust system with a valve that turns off the left muffler at partial loads. Therefore, the left one turns out to be twice as expensive as the right one, all 23 thousand rubles. Starting in 2010, this system of questionable efficiency was removed, and the mufflers are again the same. By the way, the designation of the motor according to the Opel catalog Z32SE is misleading; it differs very much from the motor with the same name on the Vectra C. For example, the "Vektrovsky" timing belt has a belt and the block is completely different. Try not to flaunt your knowledge of the motor model in front of sellers and choose parts carefully. The 3.0 engine is a newer series, it has direct injection, a more reliable timing belt and a very successful injection pump. It's just too early to talk about any serious problems, they didn't have time to manifest themselves, but many owners noted a decent oil "appetite" and the same tendency to overheat at the slightest hint of contamination of the cooling system.

All gasoline engines are highly recommended with an oil change interval of no more than 10 thousand kilometers, well, except for the good old 2.4 136 hp. this is not so critical. And the "native" DEXOS2 5W30 oil is also not the best choice. For V6 engines, SAE50 oil is generally recommended, and regular SAE40 is sufficient for inline "fours". By the way, the resource of the timing chain, according to some reviews, strongly depends on the oil and its level. Diesel engines 2.0 on cars before restyling did not cause any particular complaints from the owners. Despite the fact that they arrived in Russia only after a run through Europe, such cars were not officially sold here. Due to the small amount of serious statistics on them, there are no complaints, except for complaints about the not very large resource of injectors, sensitivity to bad diesel fuel and the resource of the timing belt in our conditions is not more than 60 thousand kilometers. More powerful 2.2 diesels are just too new for serious breakdowns - in addition to typical diesel problems with fuel equipment, there are almost no other complaints, except that automatic transmissions paired with the most powerful engines with a torque of 400 Nm are hard times. There are cases of box failure during the warranty period.

What should you buy?

If the dynamics of a 2.4 pre-styling engine with automatic transmission are enough for you, then the Chevrolet Captiva is a good choice. You just have to be content with the old interior and a rather boring appearance. More recent cars seem to have fewer problems, but a noticeable increase in the number of automatic transmission failures suggests that this unit can become really troublesome in the near future. On heavy cars, all wear processes go faster, and the difficulties faced by owners of Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze with 6T40 automatic transmission will seem like a trifle compared to the troubles of Captiva owners. The restyled 2.4, in fact, is also not a very new engine, it is noticeably more dynamic and powerful, and in combination with a manual transmission, any difficulties in operation are not expected up to runs of 120-150 thousand. Perhaps, in the new series of engines, the chances of early timing failure have also decreased, so this is a good choice. Here are V6 engines, before and after restyling, require more attention. And if the 3.2 engine in combination with a five-speed automatic transmission is generally quite reliable with proper maintenance, then the state of the automatic transmission on a three-liter one is already a mystery. A more powerful automatic transmission of the 6T45 series is likely to have the same set of problems as the more common 6T40, but whether they will manifest themselves with a run of up to hundreds of thousands or require expensive repairs with runs over 150 is not yet clear.

The release and sale of Captiva continued until 2015, when the concern announced the mothballing of the plant in Shushary and the withdrawal of the entire budget line from the Russian market. There are quite a few complaints about problems that, it would seem, do not affect the speed, but at the same time are able to bring the owner to white heat. For example, in reviews they complain about weak and completely non-impact-resistant windshields and side windows, which are “scratched even by dust,” that the plastic in the cabin is very easily scratched and loses its appearance, especially on the back surface of the front seat backs, to the failing rear window washers (and a typical case looks like this: the motor buzzes, and the liquid is not supplied due to the fact that somewhere in the bowels of the car a hose has jumped off), the fact that the eyeglass case in the upper part simply takes out the brain by constant tapping (“I had to give him a roll of toilet paper, apparently while chewing and silent”) ... In a word, reliability does not belong to the strengths of the model.

LOVE # 1: COMFORT AND PRICE

But the owners consider the general level of comfort to be the main advantage of the Chevrolet Captiva. We have already talked about the two components that create this comfort, namely the volume of the cabin and the smoothness of the ride. But ergonomics is no less important: in the cabin everything is in place and at hand, the ergonomics are excellent, the fit does not cause any complaints, the adjustment ranges of the chair and steering wheel are sufficient, the buttons and adjustments are conveniently located. The front panel is soft, the imitation leather in the cabin is beautiful and durable. In general, stories that, they say, “drove 1,000 kilometers almost without stopping and was not tired” can be found in very many reviews. The only thing some car owners complain about is that the gas and brake pedals are too far apart in height, so it's not very convenient to move your foot from pedal to pedal.

The optional filling also earned full approval: heated rear seats, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, sunroof, electric front seats, power windows, interior mirror with auto-dimming, rain sensor and much more. Of course, someone may grumble that a car of this class would definitely benefit from a heated steering wheel and windshield, adaptive cruise control, a more modern audio system and slightly better noise isolation. But most likely, then the owners would not be able to write that "Captiva is the maximum comfort for a minimum of money."

Chervrolet Captiva is simply an ideal representative of this class: simple and large interior, good asphalt habits, seven seats and a relatively low price by the standards of the class. Moreover, it was possible to purchase a simple front-wheel drive version if snow and mud were excluded in principle. Actually, in this format, the car was created not at all for Russia, but for the United States. However, we also have a large and inexpensive car, as they say, "went" - its production was even set up at the company's St. Petersburg plant.

Structurally, the Captiva and the soplatform Opel Antara with the Cadillac SRX are clean cars: the engine is transversely in front, and the suspensions are completely light - MacPherson strut front and an L-shaped arm, and a multi-link at the back. The salon is simply huge, and the rear and middle row seats fold down to form a flat floor, and even the right passenger seat has a "tricky" backrest that can be folded flush with the resulting platform. The third row, of course, is not very spacious, but on cars of this size, it is designed more for children than for fully accommodating adults.

But even in the seven-seater version, the trunk has a larger volume than that of other C-class hatches. The rear axle drive is connected via a JTEKT coupling. It uses the same ITCC system and the same purely electromagnetic clutch that was installed on the Toyota RAV4. The system is simple and reliable, but does not like slipping very much - for a moment it is enough from the motor, but it does not tolerate torsional vibrations of the transmission and overheats instantly.

Electronic assistants

After the 2011 update, the Hill Descent Control system and the hill start assistant for cars with manual transmission appeared. The forced blocking of the drive clutch was never added. But the stabilization system was updated, which was important for a fast and tall car. In the model's main market, the United States, housewives were more likely to drive than tough macho racers. The handling of the car, by the way, turned out to be quite good, despite the visually very high and narrow body. Not very large rolls, rather sharp taxiing and even a slight tendency to oversteer in extreme conditions - apparently, it was because of it that the stabilization was in the basic configuration.

Motors

What cannot be said about the car at first glance is that it is one of the most powerful crossovers in its class. Initially, the top-end configuration was supplied with a 3.2 V6 engine with 230 hp, and after restyling, it was replaced by another 3.0-liter V6, which developed, depending on the market, from 249 to 283 hp. A slightly more momentary, but not more powerful, 3.6-liter engine was also installed on cars for the United States, which essentially differed little from the first two. Post-styling diesels also showed record power - the older version of the engine developed as much as 184 hp.

Less powerful motors were also enough. Petrol "fours" with a volume of 2.4 liters until 2011 developed not impressive 136 hp, and after that the engine was replaced with a completely new one, but the same working volume, with a capacity of 167 hp. Diesels 2 liters 150 forces from the car before the restyling of the Italian design. These motors are rare under the hood of other GM cars, but they are often found on Hyundai / Kia models. After restyling, the engine volume increased to 2.2 liters and two power gradations appeared - the top engine 184 hp. and weaker, developing "only" 163.

The 2011 update didn't just affect the motors. The style of the car has radically changed, the soft and not very expressive appearance was transformed by a new radiator grill and bumper, making the car much more aggressive and noticeable. And the five-speed automatic transmissions made by Aisin were replaced by GM's own gearboxes, which turned out to be not the best solution. The second restyling of 2013 did not bring significant technical changes, and the appearance has changed almost imperceptibly.

Breakdowns and problems in operation

Body and interior

The body of GM Korea cars does not differ in a particularly durable paintwork, but even at the age of ten, there are no obvious problems with corrosion. The new GM standard affects the quality of protection of steel structures. What is needed here is galvanized, and something else is covered with a thick layer of mastic and plastic. They only forgot about the fifth door, and some of the seams in the engine compartment may have damage to the sealant and traces of corrosion already at the age of several years.

A clear disadvantage is that the thickness of the metal of the outer panels is not impressive, they bend well with a finger. This is all the more strange because the weight of the car is more than one and a half hundred kilograms more than that of its main competitors. But according to the reviews of those who have visited the Captiva in serious accidents, the secret is revealed: the car has a very solid foundation, more reminiscent of the design of the side members of serious "crooks" than a light crossover. The noise isolation, which adds weight, is also very high-quality - even the role model in this class, the RAV4 of the second and third generations, turned out to be much noisier. However, the salons of the platform-based Antara and SRX are even quieter, so Captiva is still far from the limit of perfection.

The interior is quite simple - there is decent, but not great plastic, cheap leather and simple high-quality fabric. The cheaper Chevrolet styling greatly understates the car, distancing it from the more expensive Opel and Cadillacs. It is especially insulting for the quality of the seats - a more noble profile would not hurt the driver. In the process of restyling, the interior was "refined", making it visually more expensive, but, unfortunately, this modernization did not affect the seats.

Electrician

The electrical equipment of the body and interior is not completely problem-free, although it does not present expensive troubles - this is generally typical for GM cars. Worse, the under-hood wiring and underbody electronics suffer quite a bit. The engine compartment "braid" is too "delicate" - sand trapped in the corrugations after several years of operation can cause numerous violations of the wire insulation and equally numerous failures in the on-board systems - and mainly in the engine.

After driving off-road, it is recommended to thoroughly rinse the engine compartment and generally keep it clean. By the way, a lot of troubles are created by "sweating" motors - traces of grease over time heavily pollute the compartment from below and allow sand to linger inside. The wiring to the ABS sensors and the AWD clutch is also vulnerable. After forcing fords and serious puddles, it is recommended to check the tightness of the connectors or at least once every couple of years to put grease in them. Severely worn front optics, a leaky brake light on the rear door, poor wiring of the rear license plate lights are in general characteristic of all inexpensive cars, you should not take them as a serious drawback of the model. Well, there are no failures of the on-board multimedia system here simply because of its simplicity.

Chassis

Car suspensions for passenger cars can be considered exemplary reliable and inexpensive, moreover. They even withstand off-road trips without much damage, unless, of course, they are driven over the ground and pits in a loaded car. However, the reliability of the shock absorbers is below average - after 30-40 thousand mileage, they will lose efficiency, and the car's handling will noticeably deteriorate. You can reach 100-150 thousand with a "native" kit, they will not flow if you do not overheat them, but the pleasure of driving is not the same.

The stabilizer struts are a consumable, like the bushings. With an active movement style, they have to be changed at every second TO, if you do not want to listen to their knocking. By the way, its reason may be not only in the suspension - there is a very "delicate" steering rack, which begins to knock at runs over 50 thousand. But if you monitor the fluid level in the power steering expansion tank, it can work in this state for a very long time - backlashes are minimal, and leaks are usually almost invisible. After all, this is an old Opel engine, only with a very "clamped" firmware and bored out to a volume of 2.4. The motor itself is extremely reliable - it has a cast-iron block that is resistant to overheating and other troubles, a strong piston group, a simple control system and an inexpensive "piping". For those who lack 136 strength, there are many tuning developments, ranging from shafts from the X20XER and Z22XE engines to the Red Top cylinder head with a C20XE with a serious rework and even installing a turbocharger. In addition, consumables for it can be found in almost any village, and mechanics know it, because this series of engines has been produced for a good twenty years.

The newer 2.4 motor is also familiar to all opelevoders - those who have seen the Z22SE series motors, for example. This is a more modern design, with a timing chain and balance shafts in the block. And at the same time - without repair dimensions, with an unpredictable timing resource, expensive parts, etc. But in general, the engine is very resourceful and, moreover, much more powerful in stock. Particular attention should be paid to the timing resource - it is the main supplier of problems here. If something rings on a cold one, then it would be better to immediately find 40-60 thousand rubles to replace the entire set, otherwise it can pull out the weak pins of the tensioners or dampers, grind the front cover, and in especially severe cases the timing phases are violated or the chain simply breaks ... There are ceramic valve guides in the block head, so you can't get away with a little blood - most likely you will need expensive repair or replacement. Unfortunately, it is impossible to say when the thunder will strike - usually the chains are all 120-150 thousand. This, of course, is not much, but by modern standards, it is quite a decent result. However, sometimes problems start already at 40-60 thousand mileage. Fortunately, craftsmen are familiar with these problems from structurally similar Opel engines, and there are ways to make repairs cheaper, moreover, avoiding the repetition of problems in the future. Rarer V6 engines are also familiar from Opel and GM cars. Engines of 3.2 and 3.6 liters are “relatives” of Opel Vectra 2.8T and Alfa Romeo 3.2. These highly reliable motors have several weak points. Firstly, the resource of the timing chain is limited here - it is unlikely to pass more than 150 thousand kilometers. Moreover, the cost of two circuits and four phase shifters is comparable to the price of a contract motor.

Secondly, motors are prone to overheating, and the slightest contamination of the radiators or the failure of one of the fans immediately takes the temperature into the red zone. After that, the engine almost always acquires a good oil "appetite", which can only be defeated by a bulkhead. And the ignition modules fail even if there is not much overheating, just the temperature rise in the engine compartment due to the installation of the crankcase protection may be enough for the replacement of the MH to become regular. By the way, a feature of cars with V6 before restyling is also a very expensive exhaust system with a valve that turns off the left muffler at partial loads. Therefore, the left one turns out to be twice as expensive as the right one, all 23 thousand rubles. Starting in 2010, this system of questionable efficiency was removed, and the mufflers are again the same. By the way, the designation of the motor according to the Opel catalog Z32SE is misleading; it differs very much from the motor with the same name on the Vectra C. The 3.0 engine is a newer series, it has direct injection, a more reliable timing belt and a very successful injection pump. It's just too early to talk about any serious problems, they didn't have time to manifest themselves, but many owners noted a decent oil "appetite" and the same tendency to overheat at the slightest hint of contamination of the cooling system.

All gasoline engines are highly recommended with an oil change interval of no more than 10 thousand kilometers, well, except for the good old 2.4 136 hp. this is not so critical. And the "native" DEXOS2 5W30 oil is also not the best choice. For V6 engines, SAE50 oil is generally recommended, and regular SAE40 is sufficient for inline "fours". By the way, the resource of the timing chain, according to some reviews, strongly depends on the oil and its level. Diesel engines 2.0 on cars before restyling did not cause any particular complaints from the owners. Despite the fact that they arrived in Russia only after a run through Europe, such cars were not officially sold here. Due to the small amount of serious statistics on them, there are no complaints, except for complaints about the not very large resource of injectors, sensitivity to bad diesel fuel and the resource of the timing belt in our conditions is not more than 60 thousand kilometers. More powerful 2.2 diesels are just too new for serious breakdowns - in addition to typical diesel problems with fuel equipment, there are almost no other complaints, except that automatic transmissions paired with the most powerful engines with a torque of 400 Nm are hard times. If the dynamics of a 2.4 pre-styling engine with automatic transmission are enough for you, then the Chevrolet Captiva is a good choice. You just have to be content with the old interior and a rather boring appearance.
