Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 engine problems. Disadvantages Volkswagen Tiguan and its weak points

Volkswagen Tiguan is a striking representative of the compact crossover class with off-road ambitions. The car is built on the Volkswagen Golf platform. Tiguan got its name by adding the German words Tiger - tiger and Leguan - iguana lizard. Tiguan production began in 2007 at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. Later, the assembly of Russian crossovers was established in Kaluga. In 2011, the Tiguan underwent a restyling, during which the exterior was retouched and the engine range was expanded.

Engines

The pre-styled VW Tiguan was equipped with 1.4 TSI (150 hp) and 2.0 TSI (170 hp) gasoline engines with a mechanical supercharger and turbocharging. The turbo diesel 2.0 TDI (140 hp) was also available. After restyling, the line of gasoline units appeared: 1.4 TSI without a mechanical supercharger (122 hp) and 2.0 TSI boosted to 200 hp. All motors have a timing chain drive, with the exception of diesel - they use a toothed belt. The engines are mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 1.4 TSI engines (150 hp) sometimes caused serious problems for their owners. The reason is the large loads on the piston group at low speeds. As a result, there were cases of scattering of piston rings, burnout of the piston partitions and destruction of the pistons themselves (with a mileage of more than 60 - 100 thousand km). After using stronger materials in 2013 and changing the engine control program, there are no problems so far. Repairing the engine with such troubles will require about 100 - 150 thousand rubles.

Unstable operation of the motor with a run of more than 20-30 thousand km can be caused by a stretched chain. But sometimes the signs of the problem are not so obvious, and on a segment of 100-200 thousand kilometers, individual owners were faced with a chain jump. Replacing the timing drive at the officials will cost 40-50 thousand rubles, in third-party services - about 15-20 thousand rubles (including work). Sometimes the oil pump drive sprocket also wears out.

Problems with turbochargers can arise due to a loosening of the impeller nut, oiling of the turbine cavity or destruction of the supercharger shaft (from 40,000 rubles per turbine). Cases are rare, but you shouldn't forget about a possible problem.

Engines 1.4 TSI (122 hp) without a mechanical supercharger with only one turbocharger are less "bloated", and therefore less loaded, so there are practically no problems with them.

The 2.0 TSI is characterized by "fogging" of the detachable connection of the air intake pipe going to the turbine (with a mileage of more than 30-60 thousand km). This phenomenon is not a malfunction. The reason for the appearance of oil is oil mist entering the intake tract through the crankcase ventilation system. This effect is enhanced by prolonged engine idling.

There are also malfunctions of the high pressure fuel pump (10-15 thousand rubles). Sometimes there are problems with wedging intake manifold flaps, or the engine mount begins to knock.

On machines with 2.0 TSI, assembled before 2015, after 60-100 thousand km, problems with the timing chain drive were observed. In addition, there are known cases of jamming of balancer shafts. The meshes in the oil channels (inside the shafts) are clogged, and no lubricant is supplied to the shafts. With a sad outcome, repairs will require from 50 to 100 thousand rubles. After 100-150 thousand km, the oil separator may fail (about 6,000 rubles), which leads to oil leakage through the oil seals and from under the timing case cover.

Diesel 2.0 TDI with common rail injection system is demanding on fuel quality. But when using high-quality fuel, more than 200-300 thousand km will easily pass. The timing belt of the 2-liter turbodiesel is driven by a toothed belt, which is recommended to be changed every 90,000 km. Problems with starting a warm engine may occur after 100,000 km due to failure of the pressure reducing or pressure valves. There is also a problem with the throttle valve due to the wear of its plastic drive (it eats up the gear). The new throttle unit will cost 8-9 thousand rubles for the original and 3-4 thousand rubles for the analogue. Replacement work costs about 2 - 3 thousand rubles. The TDI engine came under a revocable campaign to rework the fuel delivery pipe to the engine.

A number of problems common to all types of engines have also been noticed. For example, the pump of a liquid cooling system can sound (squeak or whistle) already in the first ten thousand kilometers. A new pump costs about 13-15 thousand rubles. Often, when the mileage is more than 20 - 40 thousand km in cold weather, there is a problem with the "disappearance" of antifreeze. The reason is the leaking tee of the lower branch pipe at the outlet of the radiator, less often in the leakage of the radiator at the junction of plastic with metal.

With a mileage of more than 100,000 km, problems with the stable operation of the engine may arise due to oxidation of the contacts at the point of insulation failure of the Gateway device separating the CAN buses.

There are also problems with the starter due to the retractor, more often in winter. Failure of the high pressure fuel pump pump can provoke a "tired" pump in the fuel tank. Sometimes on new cars the fuel level sensor "sticks", later the readings are restored, and the problem does not recur.

Transmission

No problems with the 6-speed "mechanics" 0А6 have been identified yet. With the "automatic" Aisin, things are a little different. Often, complaints appear even after the mileage is more than 20-40 thousand km. Owners report jolts or jerks when shifting gears. As a rule, everything costs a little blood - flashing the ECU box. If shocks continue to occur during acceleration, then it may be necessary to replace the automatic transmission valve block (40-50 thousand rubles). However, the owners are in no hurry to visit the service, and the box continues to work, occasionally kicking when switching between 2nd and 3rd gear. The appearance of vibrations in 6th gear will prompt you to replace the torque converter. It should be noted that real cases of machine overhaul are found only after 250-300 thousand km.

Contrary to the worst expectations, the 7-speed DSG robot does not pester with the notorious problems.

The cause of dull blows when driving irregularities is often the gearbox pillow - the rubber band knocks on the metal. The sound is similar to the banging of stabilizer bushings. Finding its source is not easy. On external examination of the support, it does not cause suspicion.

The fourth generation Haldex clutch is responsible for connecting the rear wheels. The first problems can arise with a mileage of more than 50-100 thousand km due to a creaking outboard bearing of the propeller shaft or failure of the electric booster pump. The outboard bearing (8 - 10 thousand rubles) is recommended to be changed only in assembly with the cardan shaft (45 - 55 thousand rubles). A repair kit for the coupling pump will cost 10,000 rubles. The 5th generation clutch does not allow refurbishment. We have to change the clutch motor (13,000 rubles). To extend the life of the coupling, it is recommended to renew the working fluid every 30-40 thousand km.

Chassis

The first in the suspension are thrust bearings (600 - 800 rubles apiece), which begin to creak when the wheels are turned or rattle on irregularities (with a mileage of more than 30 - 60 thousand km). After 40 - 70 thousand km, the silent blocks of the front levers can creak, more often with the onset of cold weather. Dealers will replace them under warranty. Suspension arms are rented for 100 - 150 thousand km.

Shock absorbers run over 100 - 120 thousand km. Hub bearings will last at least 60 - 80 thousand km. The front ones will cost 6-7 thousand rubles, and the rear ones will cost 9-10 thousand rubles. The replacement work costs about 1 thousand rubles.

The front anti-roll bar bushings wear out when the vehicle is driven over 100 - 140 thousand km. They change only when assembled with a stabilizer - 5-6 thousand rubles.

Front brake pads run about 30 - 70 thousand km, rear 40 - 90 thousand km.

On cars manufactured before 2012, the steering wheel becomes tight and the red EUR malfunction indicator lights up after starting the engine and trying to move. Most often, the disease occurs in winter. In such a situation, turn off the ignition and restart the engine. The malfunction is treated by flashing the electric power steering unit. If a failure occurs while driving, then the new software will not help in this case - the EUR will have to be replaced.

Other problems and malfunctions

The body paint is not too strong. Fortunately, the iron at the site of the chips is in no hurry to “bloom”. Sometimes there is paint swelling on the tailgate. On cars of the Kaluga assembly, the doors are often poorly "adjusted", because of which they do not close well, and from under the seals it comes through. An attempt to open the hood in severe frosts can lead to breakage of the plastic bracket - in the place where the hood lock control cable stops. The problem of fogging headlights is not common.

Windshields are poorly resistant to mechanical stress. And the slightest chip immediately spreads over the glass like a web of cracks.

Extraneous sounds in the passenger compartment can cause the rear door lock, rear shelf or raised floor. On many Tiguans, door seals crack or creak when rolling over bumps.

The whistle of the heater motor is a common phenomenon that intensifies in cold weather or during acceleration. The reason is the dust falling on the fan bushings. Official services will replace the "whistler" under warranty. If it is over, it is necessary to remove the fan, clean and lubricate its bushings.

Due to the failure of the contact group of the ignition lock, the radio tape recorder can spontaneously turn on or off, and the light does not come on when the ignition is turned off. A light problem can cause the fuse in the unit to melt. Windshield washers and wipers do not respond when the onboard power supply control unit fails (14 thousand rubles). If the parking brake is not removed, or the door open alarm is constantly displayed, you must reset the battery terminal for a few seconds.

Conclusion

Miracle beast - Volkswagen Tiguan was not without flaws. Fortunately, all sores are well known from other cars of the VAG group. It is worth noting that the manufacturer has been constantly working to eliminate errors.

In 2007, engineers of the German automobile company Volkswagen, based on the Volkswagen Golf hatchback, designed a fundamentally new car - the VW Tiguan. Thanks to the impeccable reputation of the progenitor, the SUV has won universal recognition in a short period of time. True, at the end of 2014, Tiguan lost the first two positions on the popularity pedestal to its competitors Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Already in 2015, the manufacturer announces the start of production of the second generation of the SUV. An exclusive novelty was able to cheer up a market segment.

Today the car is assembled not only in Germany, but also in Russia, in the city of Kaluga. The German company has increased its capacity potential in the domestic car market, thereby heating up additional interest in the SUV from the Russian buyer. Before purchasing an expensive car, it is advisable to familiarize yourself not only with its operational properties, but also with indicators of reliability and durability. Next, we will determine what is the actual engine resource for the Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4, 2.0.

A variation of the line of motors

The Volkswagen Tiguan engine range is represented by turbocharged power units with a displacement of 1.4 and 2.0 liters. 1.4 TSI engine with 122 and 150 hp. also installs on. Gasoline engines are distinguished by excellent technical characteristics and a fairly large resource. As practice shows, the power plants from the VW Tiguan line are capable of traveling 300 or more thousand km. The 2.0 TSI engine is made of a cast iron cylinder block and an aluminum head.

There are several modifications of it, differing in their rated power - 170 and 200 horsepower. A diesel analogue is also available to the buyer. There are no fundamental structural differences between the engines. The difference is that the 170-horsepower version is powered by the BorgWarner Ko3 turbine, and the Ko4 is installed on the more powerful analogue.

Some design features of VW Tiguan engines:

  • Compression ratio 10.5;
  • Number of valves - 16;
  • DOHC / belt;
  • Environmental class corresponding to Euro-5 standards.

The first generation "Tiguan" was equipped with a 6-speed hydromechanical automatic, and the next generation got a 7-speed DSG robot. The transmission of an SUV is known not only for high-quality assembly, but also for its quiet operation. At the stage of acceleration of the car, the engine is muffled, and at cruising speed only the noise emitted by the tires.

How long does the engine run on the Volkswagen Tiguan

In order to understand what the actual engine resource for the Volkswagen Tiguan is, it is necessary to understand in more detail their design features. The bulk of the owners of the modification with a 1.4-liter engine complains about the designers' miscalculations in the safety margin of the piston group. In particular, the piston itself, which, due to excessive loads and high temperatures, fails prematurely. The first problems with this structural element of the power unit may arise at the turn of 100 thousand km. Also at this stage of the run, it is advisable to monitor the condition of the timing chain. The 2.0 TDI turbo diesel has a belt instead of a chain. The condition of the timing drive must be monitored very carefully. The breakage of this element leads to unpleasant consequences - the valves bend. As you know, the repair and maintenance of German SUVs is not cheap.

When passing the first 150,000 km, an increased oil consumption is observed - it is necessary to replace the oil scraper rings or valves. Diesel 2.0-liter engines outperform gasoline analogues in terms of actual resource. But, it is worth saying that problems with the injection pump in some cases cannot be avoided. The reason for this is poor quality fuel. Professionals recommend constantly monitoring the condition of the fuel pump pusher; it is best to carry out comprehensive diagnostics every 20-30 thousand km.

The bottom line is the following: a 1.4-liter gasoline engine is able to travel about 300 thousand kilometers, subject to proper and regular maintenance. The diesel analogue travels over 350,000 km before the first overhaul.

Owner reviews about the resource of the power unit

Both turbo engines are of high quality and reliable, have high speed characteristics, but are extremely demanding on the quality of the fuel and engine oil to be filled, and are sensitive to the coolant. All three components must be closely monitored, otherwise you will have to invest in expensive auto repairs. Now let's go directly to the reviews of the owners of the Volkswagen Tiguan, who have empirically determined the duration of the trouble-free operation of the main power unit of the car.

Engine 1.4

  1. Mikhail, Voronezh. I was dissatisfied with the purchase of a representative of the German car industry with a 1.4-liter engine. The motor does not cope with its tasks at all, the Volkswagen Golf with the same engine was several times more cheerful. Plus, the questionable build quality and a very funny resource. I have a Tiguan in 2010 and for all this time I have invested in the repair an amount equivalent to the cost of a car. From constant detonations on the pistons, the edges under the rings break. A very demanding car for fuel quality.
  2. Maxim, Yalta. The SUV was generally satisfied, but there is one big BUT. The 1.4 TSI engine, frankly, is too weak and unreliable. For such a colossus, a minimum volume of 1.6 liters is needed and not 150 hp. In the morning we have to start the car like our AvtoVAZ. I refuel at Lukoil AI-95, as recommended by the manufacturer. The chain was installed just awful, flew off, not passing even 80 thousand km. The motor constantly stalled at traffic lights, at any moment it could start to troit. In general, I sold this car and began to sleep well.
  3. Stanislav, Vladivostok. I've been driving Volkswagen Tiguan since 2009. When I approached the 110 thousand km mark, problems with the chain began. Quickly replaced, there were no more breakdowns. For many years now, driving an SUV has brought only positive impressions. For those who like to push the trigger from the start, this car is definitely not suitable. With this mass and power, the chain flies at once.
  4. Egor, Moscow. Been driving since 2015. I clocked 70 thousand km during this time. The thermostat was changed under warranty, and a crack formed in the intake manifold. There are no problems with starting in cold weather, the suspension is of the highest level. The resource of the 1.4 TSI engine is too dependent on the quality of gasoline. Any unsuccessful refueling can turn into trouble. Too late the secret was revealed to me - the aluminum block and plasma spraying "live" with our fuel 100 thousand km.

The 1.4-liter power unit is not bad in terms of its characteristics. However, it is too dependent on the quality of the refueled fuel, the regularity of service and many other external factors. Not the most successful development of German engineers, which is confirmed by the reviews of the former and current owners of the Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4.

Engine 2.0

  1. Nikolay. Urengoy. Since 2008 I have been using a German off-road vehicle with a diesel engine. When passing 170,000 km, I decided to replace the timing belt with rollers and a pump. Now the car starts even better even at -30. A note to drivers: a diesel engine will win in terms of a resource over a gasoline analogue under the same operating conditions and equal working volume.
  2. Sergei. Moscow. When choosing VW Tiguan, we paid great attention to the quality of the engine. After reviewing a large amount of information, I came to the conclusion that the resource of a 2.0-liter engine is much higher than that of less voluminous counterparts. In practice, everything was confirmed - the circuit does not give any signals for the first 200 thousand km. The main thing is to refuel at proven gas stations and use certified oil.
  3. Alexey, St. Petersburg. I have a 2017 car, 2.0 diesel. Before buying, I talked to competent people about the reliability of Tiguan motors. People said that the resource of the chain is about 300 thousand km, that is, almost to the first capital. The turbine runs even more, everything is done at a high level. Much depends on the quality of the consumables themselves and the scheduled maintenance of the car.
  4. Matvey. Cheboksary. Ask an experienced VW Tiguan owner which modification is more reliable, he will answer you - a two-liter one. Himself personally saw the car passed more than 300 thousand. The resource also depends on the driving style, the first 200 thousand km generally pass without any problems with adequate driving.

Many car owners agreed that the 2-liter power plant is more reliable and stable in relation to adverse operating conditions. Numerous studies also confirm the fact that, in practice, the resource of the Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 engine is more than 300 thousand kilometers.

This is not to say that VW did not produce compact SUVs until 2007. For example, there was the Kübelwagen, aka Typ 82, which was made from 1939 to 1945, and in recent history the 2nd generation Golf had an off-road configuration ... But the Touareg's unequivocal success and high demand for everything that remotely resembled an SUV , clearly hinted that it was time to release a small, and therefore practically "people's" crossover.

The public showed the new car in 2006, and sales began only at the end of 2007. It turns out that the hero of today's review, the Volkswagen Tiguan, will soon celebrate its tenth anniversary. During this period, he managed to collect a large number of both positive and negative reviews, collect both fans and haters of the model. Whichever one is right, this is one of the most popular cars in its class, and its life cycle has just ended - last year on the MQB platform. It's time to take stock of the release of the old one.

Platform

Volkswagen Tiguan "2008-11

When creating a junior crossover model, the company did not reduce the large and expensive Touareg. The new car was created on the inexpensive mass platform PQ35, on which other cars of the concern were already produced. Of course, the engine of the new car stands transversely, the rear axle drive is connected via a Haldex clutch, a multi-link at the rear, MacPherson strut in front. And all that for which the Golf and related cars love: excellent ergonomics, high quality of finish and workmanship. And, of course, the car inherited all the negative qualities of this platform - not the most successful motors and gearboxes, as well as complex electronics and suspensions. However, everything in order.

Why the Tiguan is good

The first reviews from journalists about the car were enthusiastic. The handling is excellent, the dynamics are very convincing, the fuel consumption with the 1.4 engine and diesel engines is extremely low. And even the off-road qualities of the car in the Trend & Fun, Sport & Style trim levels turned out to be very high, and the “road” version of Track & Field was limited primarily by the angles of the front exit due to the use of a more aerodynamic bumper.

Without much exaggeration, we can say that the car turned out to be one of the best in its class, pushing out both the Toyota RAV4 and the European bestseller Qashqai.

Boxed mess

As usual, it was not without a fly in the ointment - very quickly the Europeans discovered that it was in off-road sorties that the preselective "robots", which VW was so proud of, did not perform well. The clutches quickly overheated when driving slowly over rough terrain. Probably for this reason, in the Russian versions of the car, they immediately refused to use even the very reliable DSG 6 and the new DSG 7 series DQ500 (with "wet" clutches).

The dubious "robot" was replaced with the classic Aisin hydromechanics, and with 1.4 engines, only "mechanics" were offered until 2011. The "wet" DSG-6 was installed only after restyling and only for front-wheel drive cars. The Europeans, on the other hand, had DSG on cars with 1.4 engines, and also with wet clutches, as with "adult" engines. For two-liter gasoline engines with a capacity of 170 and 180 hp. put Aisin until 2010, keeping DSG on more powerful ones. In general, the story with the automatic transmission is confused to the point.

Assembly

A special detective story is associated with the choice of the place of manufacture of the car. The Portuguese plant SEAT Auto Europa claimed a potentially very popular model, which would save jobs after the completion of the VW Sharan / Ford Galaxy. Both the government of the country and the trade unions took the side of the plant.

But keeping in mind that the quality of the cars of this plant is not the highest, VW nevertheless built a new Auto 5000 factory specifically for the production of Tiguan in Germany, in Wolfsburg. At the same time, the specifics of assigning models to factories became known: it turns out that within the company there is internal competition among industries for the release of a certain model, and this competition is very tough. The presence of investors at the plant itself, and production indicators, and much more are taken into account. By the way, as a result, Tiguan was made not only in Wolfsburg, but also in the Russian Kaluga, and in Shanghai, and in the Vietnamese Haipong.

Breakdowns and problems in operation

Body and interior

The fame of indestructible, stainless and maintenance-free cars that arose in the 90s on a wave of hobby, brought Volkswagen immense popularity in Russia. However, everything goes to the point that a "rollback" of public opinion will soon occur. And it's not just the DSG boxes. Well-painted bodies of both Kaluga and German cars look better in general aged than their Japanese competitors, and even some European ones. And plastic panels protect the paint from sandblasting and stones, which means they make the paintwork more reliable.

But corrosion gradually manifests itself at the seams, the sealant swells, red traces appear, paint flies in the most unexpected places, for example, on door openings. And this despite the fact that the average age of cars is still completely "childish", which means that all the problems have not yet appeared. In general, it is recommended to pay close attention to the state of the body in terms of corrosion, and not just on the subject of traces of accidents. By the way, the plastic door linings do not hold very well, and when mobility appears, they will easily spoil the paint at the attachment points, so keep the doorways clean, free of dirt and ice. If you already have a Tiguan, then you should think about an anticorrosive solution - it's much cheaper than solving problems with the body in another five years. The salon of cars on the PQ35 platform is generally distinguished by excellent ergonomics, high quality and ... boredom. The Tiguan is no exception. Comfortable, convenient and "gray" car will appeal to those who are not looking for new sensations, but simply thirst for quality and convenience.

Of course, there are downsides: for example, the seats are rather weak, the driver's mechanics often fail, and the “skin” of the coating turns out to be not very natural and completely unreliable - by 80 thousand run the leather seats look wrinkled. A typical problem with all platform machines is crickets in the ducts. Here, too, the right air duct and its flaps often create extraneous noise. And also frankly tight door seals, which at first interfere with easy closing, literally after three or four years, they crumble and begin to make noise and let dust and dirt from the street. Most often, the problem is eliminated with an extra layer of seals, because the installation of a new original will again make the door slam, as in the old Zhiguli. The not very reliable climate block of pre-styling cars is sometimes changed to a new one, with "twists", without waiting for failures, and in general, thanks to the multitude of cars on this platform, some of them have long turned into "constructors". On used copies, there are buttons from other trim levels, and boxes for seats with Audi, and lighting with a Passat, and seats with a Golf GTI.

Don't be too scared. The owners really like the car, but the simplicity of its interior is annoying for many, so, armed with catalogs, many are looking for interesting configurations from soplatform cars. Then, armed with Vasya the diagnostician, they courageously install unknown options and devices. What cannot be installed is normal navigation, and in general multimedia is not the best here. Poor support for Android and iOS devices, lack of normal display of traffic jams, high price for a frankly outdated solution ... These features can be forgiven for the cheaper Golf, but the crossover is much more expensive and the manufacturer's greed already looks bad. A rather serious problem is the tendency of machines on this platform to clog drainage and gradually wet the floor mats. This leads to multiple electronics failures and problems with the wiring harness, especially the part that goes to the right front door. There are also cars with assembly flaws, and not always Russian. Poorly screwed elements, incomprehensible "crickets" are not necessarily the result of interior repairs. There are copies that clearly have these problems from a factory in Germany.

Electrician

As you can imagine, the electrical part is capable of causing a lot of trouble on cars over the age of three to five years. Moreover, for the younger ones, there are no problems at all, except with multimedia systems. As a result, opinions differ greatly: someone is already faced with difficult-to-solve electrical problems and curses everyone and everything, and someone, by the age of five, has no serious breakdowns and only sees with displeasure an increasing oil appetite. In general, the electrician is quite reliable and does not irritate with minor glitches and failures. In addition, it looks like more than a dozen car models, and it is well known both in official and unofficial services. Only problems can be treated in very different ways, if they have already appeared. Officials often have to replace harnesses and blocks, which turns out to be very expensive, while craftsmen have local repairs, replacement of individual parts of harnesses, drying of connectors ...

If you take care of the door harnesses, do not allow the connectors to acidify, monitor the drainage of the engine shield and do not flood the engine compartment with dirt, then there are good chances that the car will be limited only by annoying failures, for example, climatronic or taillights. In the fourth or fifth year of life, you can expect the "death" of the battery. The load on it is large, the generator operates at low voltage even at negative temperatures. On the oldest cars, it is recommended to pay close attention to the wiring to the steering rack, there are quite large currents there, and if the connectors are sealed, they simply burn out. Replacing the rail and wiring harness can be up to half the cost of the car, so it's best to be sure in advance. But in general, as you can imagine, the price of electrical repairs can be shocking.

Chassis

To the credit of the PQ35 platform, all VW cars can be considered almost perfect in this. Even taking into account the fact that there is a multi-link at the back, there is no particular doubt about the reliability. The main components of the suspension travel 100-150 thousand kilometers, wheel bearings serve the same amount. Most often, only the rear silent blocks of the front levers, anti-roll bars and some rear silent blocks change. The repair price is also not prohibitive, a good selection of non-original components and even an inexpensive original.

The brake system also did not disappoint, and the discs and pads are very moderate, but they serve for a long time. Disks - usually at least 50 thousand kilometers, pads - at least 30-40. But the firmware of the ABS unit is inconvenient for many. According to the results of a journalistic investigation of one publication, it turned out that the system too loosens the wheels in corners and on the "comb", which can lead to serious consequences. This is where all the bikes of the ABS opponents manifest themselves - the system simply does not allow to slow down. The situation can be corrected by updating the unit's software, this should be done free of charge as part of a recall campaign, but for some reason, on most machines, the firmware is still old, factory-installed. The new firmware does not completely solve the problem, but it significantly reduces the braking distance in such situations, so it is worth updating.

Transmissions

Mechanical gearboxes do not have serious problems with the resource, but traditionally I will remind you that the flywheels are dual-mass here, very expensive. Sometimes they need to be repaired or changed, otherwise there is a chance to break the box and the starter for a very serious amount. But with automatic transmissions, as mentioned above, there is a complete leapfrog. In Russia, the car was sold mainly with a hydromechanical automatic transmission Aisin TF60-SN / VW 09G / M, which is considered reliable and problem-free. Until it breaks, of course. Indeed, on most VWs, this box works in very severe overheating conditions and the Tiguan is no exception. Changing the oil every 40-60 thousand kilometers and installing a "package for hot countries", which includes a separate radiator and filter for automatic transmissions, are highly recommended.

And this automatic transmission also has a very capricious and difficult-to-repair valve body, and very expensive at the same time. In general, such a box can travel its 100-150 thousand kilometers even in severe modes and without additional cooling, but if you are counting on longer operation, then it is better to intervene in the factory design and seriously think about improvements. After 2011, cars with DSG DQ250, also known as DSG-6, were officially sold. This venerable box has not so many problems, especially in combination with the 1.4 engine. She is also prone to overheating in traffic jams and especially when driving off-road. Because of this, as well as due to the rapid contamination of the oil by wear products of clutch linings, it is worth cutting the oil change interval in half and being prepared for valve body failures-mechatronics. However, it is definitely not worth demonizing this box. Clutches in an oil bath do not burn and do not crumble, as on a "dry" DQ200 (DSG-7), and it transfers the moment even from a two-liter engine perfectly. There are few car specialists, there are a number of nuances in the mechanical part, and the valve body is not officially repaired. But everything is unofficially repaired, and you can even order spare parts yourself, for example, on AliExpress. In Europe, such a box was installed on front-wheel and all-wheel drive cars with 1.4 150-160 hp engines and on two-liter gasoline engines from the very beginning of the model's production. We have few European cars, but they are still found. Again, an external heatsink and external filter for this box are highly recommended.

The most powerful engines 2.0 TSI 211 hp even we relied on the DQ500 series seven-speed DSG gearbox. In Europe, it was installed on all diesel engines, and even on some 1.4, not to mention the 200- and 211-horsepower versions of the two-liter engine. Such a "robot" is noticeably more reliable than a six-step, and certainly has nothing to do with the notorious "dry" box DQ200 at all. This unit was developed for the commercial VW Transporter and made it really reliable. It cannot be said that it is completely problem-free, but it tolerates movement at low speeds in difficult conditions much better due to different gear ratios, and is less prone to contamination and mechatronics failures. And the clutch resource is much higher. On minibuses, even in urban operation, there are cars with 300-400 thousand mileage and without any work on the "robot". The box has only one drawback: if something goes wrong, the contract unit will be very expensive, and there will be very few specialists. And the price of consumables bites.

Even on dorestyling cars, the rear axle drive clutch turned out to be very troublesome - there is a fourth generation Haldex. And with frequent off-road trips and regular "annealing", the oil change interval in practice should not exceed 30-40 thousand kilometers. Moreover, both the oil and the filter for the system are easiest to find in catalogs ... Volvo (part number 31325173). If you neglect the replacements, then the pump of the system will fail, and the car will turn into a strictly front-wheel drive one. After 2011, the clutch was changed to Haldex V - it is noticeably more reliable and corny does not allow itself to overheat. The transmission overheating light on the dashboard will light up more often, but the clutch itself does not require such frequent oil changes.

Gasoline engines

Motors 1.4 of the EA111 family on it are of several series: CAXA and CZDB with a capacity of 122 hp. and the 150 hp CZDA each have one turbocharger. But CAVA and CAVD differ in an interesting power system - it uses a turbine and a drive compressor at the same time. However, the main problems of the family remained: a weak piston group, a weak chain, a lubrication system operating at the limit, a high load on the liners, weak turbines and high-pressure fuel pumps, a quickly contaminated intercooler with a weak pump. It is expected that low-power versions are less likely to have problems with complete failure of the piston group, but 150- and 160-horsepower versions suffer from turbine failures with compressors and fatal piston destruction. Motors with double supercharging are also distinguished by enviable complexity - the throttle system is prone to freezing in winter. The compressor drive clutch, combined with the pump, costs about 30 thousand rubles and is a consumable. It needs to be changed at the same time as the pump, and additionally, out of turn, when it burns out, which is not so rare.

It's amazing how, with such a set of design flaws, there are cars that have already traveled 200 or more thousand kilometers with only the timing chains replacing and general engine maintenance. Perhaps the choice of oils and its timely replacement or successful operating modes affect. But there are also enough poor fellows whose car spends half of its life in warranty repairs. It's funny that such cars with very low mileage often look advantageous when sold on the secondary market. But you need to understand: the high price of a car with low mileage often in this case means that during its short life the SUV spent a lot of time in the service, waiting for the next warranty repair or "kulants" (preferential post-warranty repair). In general, with a 1.4 engine, you need to be very careful, and it is better not to take a car with this engine at all. Motors of 2 liters of the EA888 family have several options at once: CAWA, CAWB, CCZA and CCZB. But the essence is the same - these are almost identical engines with minimal differences in the power supply system and turbines. Common problems of this family are the tendency to coke the piston group due to unsuccessful oil scraper rings and pistons, high load on the crankcase ventilation system due to unsuccessful compression rings, a constantly dirty throttle and a weak timing (however, much more reliable than 1.4) ... The strengths of these motors are excellent traction throughout the rev range and fantastic tuning capabilities. Even a simple chip tuning can make the Tiguan a competitor to the Golf R. 300-340 hp. - this is not the limit for a nominally 170-horsepower motor. The flip side of this is the presence of both a huge number of cheap firmware and a whole heap of cars left by the "racers". If the engine was handled carefully, then most likely its resource before serious repairs will be 120-160 thousand kilometers, the timing and serious "maslozhor" are unlikely to allow more.

If the motor was seriously chipped, then anything is possible. Firstly, they often serve better, and more frequent oil changes and better oil can do a little miracle - there will be no "maslozhor". But the timing and turbines will be in a more deplorable state here. There are also problems with the drive of the intake manifold flaps - the plastic rod flies off due to wear or the filter in the vacuum drive gets clogged, but the officials change the manifold assembly. Even on two-liter engines, the resource of ignition modules is noticeably less than 1.4. Owners often try to find some solutions, order modules from other engines, look for modules from Audi, etc., etc. But this does not change the essence of the matter, even the original NGK modules with their own candles fail quite often. Again, due to the prevalence of this family of engines, the problems and solutions have long been known. It's just that most car owners tend to hide their heads in the sand and prefer expensive official service and official solutions. But on the Tiguan, there is no particular alternative to the petrol 2.0TSI. Diesel engines are in many ways more reliable, but they have their own nuances.

Diesel motors

The diesel itself is also only two-liter. In Russia, only the 140-horsepower CBAB was officially sold, but the Europeans were offered the entire range, from 110 to 184 hp. (CFFD, CUVC, CFGC, CUWA), including with urea neutralization. These motors are as reliable as diesel engines can be with their extremely vulnerable power system, particulate filter and diesel fuel that freezes in winter. In addition, on top-end motors, there are piezo injectors with a limited resource and frequent failures. If you are a neat owner, then the diesel will delight you, but one unsuccessful refueling - and now there are four nozzles of 30 thousand rubles each, plus a high-pressure fuel pump, plus all filters and an expense for flushing the tank and replacing it. A total of 160 thousand. And the savings were gone. A common misfortune of all cars with an autonomous heater is the obvious corrosion of its pipes and antifreeze leakage. This, incidentally, applies not only to diesel, but also gasoline cars.

What should you choose?

Let's just discard all unnecessary things. For example, cars with 1.4 engines, unless you have a fad on fuel consumption. You should be afraid of DSG on the Tiguan only if you spend half your life in traffic jams. Well, or if you are a Muscovite, which is almost the same thing. Everyone else will love the seven- or even six-speed DSG, although a simple Aisin is just as good with proper care. Which of the two-liter engines to choose is already a personal matter of the future owner. Diesels are definitely more resourceful, but noticeably more expensive in repairing fuel equipment. Gasoline engines have a very predictable average resource, understandable problems with oil consumption and other "nuances" that can also be solved if there were money. And if you absolutely need four-wheel drive, the restyled Tiguan with the more reliable Haldex V clutch is definitely the best choice. The bonus is a slightly more interesting interior and exterior. But in any case, before buying a Tiguan, it is worth first assessing how ready you are for the deadly calmness of this car's design, internal and external, and whether you are resistant enough to the temptations of its dynamics and driving characteristics.

Owner reviews

In the car for 1.5 million, the button for opening the 5 door was completely frozen (this is at -2 degrees), and condensation formed in the rear lights. At the same time, fogging of both lanterns is not a warranty case (for removing and installing the lanterns and drying them on a battery within 5 hours, the officials billed 1,800 rubles). This is the German quality ...

The gasoline consumption of the new Tiguan (automatic, 2.0 l) in winter, during vegetable driving, did not fall below 16.5 l / 100 km. And this is after competent running-in (no more than 2,000 rpm for 1,500 km).

Liked: handling, comfort, dynamics, Shumka.

Disliked: fuel consumption, lack of USB input on the head unit.

Video review

Here they write about the steering wheel, yusb, etc. - it's all nonsense. The main drawback of the new Volkswagen Tiguan 2 is fuel consumption of 15-16 liters ... If this is not stressful for you, then I envy it kindly.

Otherwise, the perfect crossover for the city. Optimal price-quality ratio. For six months of intense use, no questions asked.

Sergey Krel, drives a Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 (180 hp) AWD DSG 2016

We drive a new VW Tiguan 2 from March 2016. Equipment - CLUB. The first maintenance took place at 11 thousand km, i.e. earlier than 15 thousand. By the way, all VW dealers have a special offer on Sundays - a 20% discount on maintenance. Before passing MOT, they refueled 95, periodically there was some kind of whistle for a few seconds when starting the engine, then it disappeared, the speed dropped to 0.8 in two minutes. Passed MOT - everything is OK, changed the oil, filters.

They asked about the whistle, no one answered intelligibly. We live in Crimea, 98 gasoline has been delivered to us since September. We switched to it. And a miracle - the whistle is gone, the rpm after starting the engine drops in 10-15 seconds. The car is high-spirited, the turbine turns on when the driver needs it, i.e. when overtaking in low gear and helps a lot.

Noise isolation is good. When we bought it, they scared us with oil consumption - nothing like that. There was practically no expense. In general, comfortable, dignified, crossover))

Highway consumption - 5.4-6.0, city - 8-10, up to 11 - if there are traffic jams. There is a good function - Autohold - keeps the car on the descent and ascent, like a handbrake, when you need to move off, you press the gas pedal and there is no rolling back at all.

It accelerates well and briskly, holds the track steadily. The speed of 120-130 km / h is not felt. I did not like the interior trim. The fabric would be better.

Irina, review of Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 (125 hp) mechanic 2016

A very comfortable car, dynamic and economical, stylish and modern. The daily commute becomes a pleasure for the whole family. For 30 years of driving, I changed 10 cars - Tiguan did not disappoint. Of the shortcomings, I will only note that the seat upholstery material could be better.

Marina drives a Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 (150 hp) AWD DSG 2017

Where can I buy?

The car was bought in the spring of 2017. I had three main requirements: diesel, webasto and off road bumper. I bought this one - Comfortline equipment + six option packages.

I often go to nature (fishing, mushrooms), so I decided to change the BMW sedan to something higher. In principle, I am satisfied with the replacement, but, as they say, there are nuances. After the purchase, I pasted over the entire front of the car with a film (I drive quickly and sometimes far, and the headlights and paint become cloudy in a couple of years). I installed a mesh in the bumper - the radiators look too defenseless))

LED cornering lights, especially at night and in the rain - this is a class! I also liked the strips of LED lighting in the doors and sills, cozy.

I do not like the fabric upholstery on the doors - it gets dirty quickly. For some reason, several electrical connectors were placed under the neck of the washer reservoir - you miss a little, and liquid gets on them. In some modes, the rearview mirror shakes and vibrates. Dipped beam - well, very close.

Review of Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 diesel (150 hp) with robot and all-wheel drive 2017

The car is purely masculine in design, austere, as my friend says: "not very smart and not very simple, effective - that is, the golden mean." I completely agree with him.

I'm 99% satisfied with the car. What was initially embarrassing was the harsh suspension. In my configuration, there are 18 discs, 17 are decently softer, but I still don't want to change the wheels. I really like how they look. About gas mileage - 9.8 liters yesterday from work to home. Today back 12 liters, collected all the traffic lights.

Aerodynamics are also on par. Side windows get dirty only with birds, and cats walk on the hood and leave prints of their paws. This VW did not provide))

Review of the new Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 (180 hp) with a robot and all-wheel drive 2017

Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact crossover, which has been produced since 2007. The 2nd generation of Tiguan has recently come out, and there are many offers on the sale of the 1st generation Tiguan in the secondary market. Whether it is worth buying a used Volkswagen Tiguan, we will now find out. Tiguanas appeared in Russia in the middle of 2008, cars were assembled in Kaluga. If at first these cars were assembled using SKD SKD technology, then after 2010 in Kaluga, cars were already produced in a full cycle - CKD, bodies were also cooked and painted there.

The build quality is the same that the Germans assembled that ours. Of course, there were a couple of nuances, for example, the side doors were poorly adjusted, and the tailgate was crookedly planted, but after a few months they learned how to do everything right. So, the oldest cars had to be recalled for service in order to replace some of the bolts and put them on sealant. If this is not done, then the propeller shaft could become loose.

Salon

The interior is quite high quality, the materials look almost like new after many years of operation, everything of course depends on the previous owner. But it happens that even the door trim on the go can start to creak. On Tiguanas produced from 2008 to 2009, under warranty, it was necessary to repair the wiring: the wire that comes from the antifreeze temperature sensor broke, so the fan worked constantly. There is also a harness that fits to the engine control unit, it is not properly secured, so it could burn, which would make the car immovable.

There were also cases that the headlights went out by themselves on cars manufactured before 2011. We fixed this situation in 2013. The problem was with the fuse or junction box under the hood. But the body is well protected from corrosion, the only weak point is on the tailgate, rust may appear on the lower edge.

Over time, purely cosmetic flaws appear, some of which you won't even see right away, for example, the hood soundproofing sheet may sag after a few years, and if you wash the engine inaccurately, this sheet will come off completely. The dealerships changed the clip-holders, or completely replaced the soundproofing sheathing. The appearance can be spoiled by the radiator grill, which will cover, door linings, paint peels off the side mirrors and bumpers. By the way, if chips appear, then they should be painted over as soon as possible, because the remaining paint may begin to peel off.

Another traditionally weak points are door locks and a stove motor, which already begins to make a lot of noise after 3 years of car operation. A new motor of this type costs 130 euros, but for the first time you can simply lubricate the bearing.

In Tiguan there is a radio navigation system RNS, produced by Continental, which serves for a long time and does not fail, therefore, if it happens that it cannot be controlled using the buttons on the steering wheel, it means that you need to change the contacts on the steering column for 120 euros, because that because of them the signal and the airbag can stop working.

Motors

The very first cars assembled in Russia were equipped with a 1.4-liter engine with a capacity of 150 hp. from. There are 25% of cars on the market with this engine. The engine is economical, but pulls well, the car accelerates quite quickly. But reliability is not all that good. The liquid intercooler gets dirty over time. So, if you give a high load, the piston group will wear out faster, the bridges between the rings can burn out, the pistons collapse, especially the 2nd and 3rd. The overhaul of this motor is quite expensive - 2500 euros, so it is better to look for the motor somewhere for disassembly.

In 2011, it was restyled and the 1.4 TSI engine was installed in Tiguanas - this is an upgraded version of the same engine. The power remained the same, only the pistons were strengthened, so that the engine became more reliable.

But some problems with the motor still remained. For example, injection pumps and injectors are sensitive to fuel, if at least once you fill in low-quality fuel, you will have to pay 260 euros for a new high-pressure fuel pump, and 150 euros for each injector. After 100,000 km. mileage, a pump may start to leak, which costs 350 euros. The timing chain can stretch for about 60,000. The chain itself costs 70 euros plus the cost of the work. Therefore, in order not to have to do a major overhaul of the motor, it is better in advance, as soon as rattling or clinking appears, immediately check the condition of the chain and change it. But definitely after 100,000 km. it needs to be changed.

In general, all these problems are typical for Tiguan gasoline engines. In a 1.4 TSI supercharged engine with a capacity of 122 liters. with., which appeared in 2011, the chain is also not very strong. It must also be remembered that it is undesirable to leave a Tiguan with any gasoline engine on a hill without a handbrake, starting from a pusher is also a big risk, because the chain can jump over the teeth, especially when it is on the way. In general, you need to be careful with the chain.

By the way, the twin-aspirated 1.4 TSI engine, which has a cast-iron cylinder block, an aluminum head and a phase shifter on the intake shaft, must be filled with 98th gasoline. Most of all cars with a 2.0 TSI engine, after a while they start to eat oil, this is more noticeable on cars produced before restyling - 0.7 liters per 1000 km. mileage. There are several reasons - the seal of the camshaft position sensor starts to snot. After restyling, this problem was fixed.

But the real reason for the oil consumption is the oil scraper rings and the weak valve efficiency in the crankcase ventilation system. On cars produced after 2011, the design of valves, rings, oil seals was improved, the program in the ECU was improved, after all these innovations, oil consumption decreased by 2 times, but still remained.

But there are diesel engines, they are installed on 20% of cars, these engines cause less problems to their owners - they don't eat oil, there is no chain. The only thing from driving around the city at low speed and when driving over short distances can be after about 70,000 km. to require intervention of the EGR valve, a new one costs 150 euros.

Also, it is not necessary to monitor the quality of diesel fuel, here the high-pressure fuel pump is already more expensive - 1000 euros. In general, the motor is reliable, but sometimes it happens that after 100,000 km. mileage require replacement of the injector seals, they are inexpensive - 15 euros per set, but you also need to add the cost of work here. There are still cases that after 180,000 km. the flap in the intake tract begins to wedge, because the plastic gear in the mechanism of its drive wears out by this run. To fix this, you will have to spend 150 euros.

If there is a situation where a diesel car after 150,000 km. mileage does not start very well, then you need to immediately check the pressure reducing and pressure valves of the fuel system. And THAT should be done more than once every 15,000, as the officials recommend, but once every 10,000 km. In general, it is better to buy a Tiguan with a diesel engine, because it is much more reliable than gasoline engines.

Gear boxes

There are different gearboxes - the DQ200 preselection with 2 dry clutches is a robotic gearbox, it is installed on cars with front-wheel drive and a 1.4 TSI engine, the power of which is 150 hp. from. In Europe, this box can also be found on Tiguanas with a 1.8 TSI engine. On cars produced after 2011, this box has already begun to break less, and after 2012 there was a serious modernization in it and there were almost no problems with it.

After 2011, both 6 and 7-speed robots DQ250 and DQ500 appeared, they were installed on all-wheel drive vehicles with engines 1.4 and 2.0. The weak point in these boxes is the mechatronic valve body. A new unit like this is not cheap - more than 2,000 euros, therefore, for it to serve longer, it needs to be every 80,000 km. change the oil in the box. This is ATF DSG.

The most popular gearbox is the 6-speed automatic, which costs about 60% of cars. This box is an Aisin Warner TF-60 / 61SN series, jointly developed in 2003 by Japanese and German engineers. For front-wheel drive Tiguanas, this box is indexed 09G, and for all-wheel drive - 09M. There are no problems with the box, you just need to monitor the purity of the oil and its quality. Officially, the oil in the box does not need to be changed, but it is better to do this every 80,000 km, then the valve body will last longer. If freezes or jolts appear during switching, then this is a clear sign that it is time to change the oil in the box. Also, do not forget to monitor the radiator in the gearbox on diesel cars, because sometimes leaks appear.

But the most reliable is a 6-speed manual gearbox, no matter what engine it works with. The only thing that can happen to it is oil seals leak after about 80,000 km. The clutch is enough for about 140,000 km. The new kit will cost about 400 euros. It happens that on the same run the clarity disappears during switching, then you need to check the switching mechanism, it is possible that it is worn out, its replacement will cost 200 euros. On four-wheel drive vehicles, remember to change the oil in the Haldex coupling, then the pump will last longer and the four-wheel drive will be in working order. It is necessary to change the oil every 60,000 km.

Suspension and chassis

Electric power steering on cars before restyling could simply turn off while driving. Therefore, engineers in 2009 reflashed the electric power steering control unit. But despite this, there were often cases when steering gear assemblies were changed on cars produced before 2011 under warranty after 30,000 km.

It is better not to drive off-road on the Tiguan, despite the short overhangs, because the suspension is not particularly designed for these purposes. Approximately 100,000 km. stabilizer bushings fail, but before that, they can just creak for a long time. Replacement of bushings with stabilizer will cost 140 euros. Approximately 70,000 km. fail:

  • wheel bearings, which are assembled with the hub, cost 130 euros each;
  • support bearings on the front struts, which cost 50 euros each;
  • silent blocks of the front levers (30 euros each).

But the shock absorbers can already last longer - about 120,000 km. The front ones cost about 150, and the rear ones cost 130 euros. The levers serve as long as the shock absorbers, in general, to sort out the rear suspension will cost around 700 euros, but before 100,000 km. there should definitely not be any problems with the rear multi-link.
And the front suspension with MacPherson struts still gives trouble a little earlier, but up to 70,000 km. the suspension will be all right.

In this generation of Tiguan, the PQ35 platform is used, which is also installed on these cars:

  • Skoda Yeti;
  • Volkswagen Golf;
  • Octavia (A5);
  • Audi A3.

Many parts in the suspension are taken from the Passat. But in general, a car requires attention if it is no longer new, and the costs for it are quite high, especially if something breaks down. In terms of reliability, the Tiguan is about the same as the Nissan Qashqai, which is 100,000 rubles cheaper. Secondary market prices are not falling as quickly. It is better to look for a diesel car with an automatic or manual transmission after restyling. The price will not be lower than 1,000,000 rubles for a 3-year-old car.

The thrill of riding a Tiguan

The volume of the engine is modest - 1.4, but it produces 150 liters. from. thanks to turbocharging. With a manual transmission, the car behaves better on the track, but in the urban cycle you have to often change gears so as not to get into a turbo lag. Off-road, it is also not very convenient to ride mechanics, so that the car does not stall, you need to give more revs, because there is not enough traction. Tiguan with a 2-liter engine and an automatic transmission behaves better, especially if you turn on the sport mode on the box. Volkswagen is better at cornering than comparable competitor models. Excellent feedback from the steering wheel thanks to the electric power assistance. The rolls are minimal, there is also no buildup. There is a stabilization system that will prevent skidding on a slippery road.

The car has excellent handling and it brakes well if necessary, but the suspension is quite stiff, it keeps the body evenly at any speed. Every bump is felt, but these are qualities of a more sports car. By the way, the insulation is good, you can't hear the noise from the rubber. At speeds over 140, the wind is already beginning to be heard. On the off-road, the Volkswagen Tiguan has nothing to do, because the geometric cross-country ability here is so-so, but the car climbs well on the slopes, since the engine is quite high-torque. But the suspension is short-travel and on serious off-road irregularities the wheels remain in the air.
