Five things the Audi A4 B5 love and hate. Audi A4 (B5) - Still Attractive ?! Salon and Equipment

It was also designed to compete with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, only in the D-class, and was produced from 1994 to 2000. A good set of engines - both in-line "fours" and V6s (both petrol and diesel), reliable manual gearboxes and automatic gearboxes, options with front-wheel drive and quattro all-wheel drive ... The model went through the first restyling in 1996, and the second - in a year and a half before discontinuation, in 1999. How did these "Audyukhs" prove themselves in the Russian open spaces after a couple of decades?

Four of four are different: after the first restyling, the unification with the soplatform VW Passat B5 and Skoda Superb became higher, which simplified the selection of spare parts, and the electrics became more reliable. Electronics, consider, and completely changed radically, for there was a CAN-bus. In addition, the bodies began to be painted a little better, which has a positive effect years later. Unlike the A8, the body on all A4s is not aluminum, but just galvanized steel, but due to this, the stereotype has been entrenched in the car that the metal, just like that of the “older sister,” supposedly does not rot. Or is it still rotting?

Love # 5: the body doesn't rot

Of course, but he does it not as actively as many contemporaries, and only at special, characteristic points. If you pay attention to them in time, then the body will really last for many decades without any problems. High-quality galvanizing amazes ordinary Russian users with the fact that even if the paint layer is damaged in an accident, the seemingly bare metal does not rust for six months. In a word, the bodywork of the first "four" is its strong point and a reason for love for this car.

Hate # 5: the pendant is tender

There is no particular tenderness in her, this is mostly a myth. But it has arisen by no means out of nowhere. The revolutionary (again, like that of the "big sister") PL5 chassis, which later became successful and gave birth to a number of models, at first really sinned with the low strength of the aluminum front levers, so both the alloy composition and the design had to be adjusted. This removed some of the problems, but for those who like jumping on boulders, owning A4 is still categorically contraindicated.

In the photo: Audi A4 "1997-99

However, even neat drivers are sometimes discouraged by the complex structure, which is supposedly expensive to repair. This is not the case for a long time: a branded set of levers costs about 12,000 rubles, a high-quality non-original - about 7,000 rubles, and a well-restored used set costs about 3,000 rubles.

Love # 4: the trunk is big

The volume of the sedan's trunk (and we remember that there is also a station wagon with the Avant prefix in the name) is equal to 440 liters - this, of course, is not a Datsun on-DO, but for a sedan and this is not bad. Moreover, the look with such a quite roomy luggage compartment remained, one might say, a model of harmony.

In the photo: Audi A4 "1999-2000 and Audi A4 Avant" 1999-2001

Hate # 4: the back row is tight

Another thing is that, if necessary, it is often almost impossible to add to these liters, if necessary: in a number of modifications of the A4 sedan, the rear seat back is one-piece, and it does not fold, but is only dismantled. But this does not solve the problem with spaciousness - behind the back there is a metal partition, in which there is only a small hole for long lengths. And that's not the only problem with the back row of seats in the A4.

The body here is wider than that of the predecessor Audi 80, so there is quite enough space on the shoulders in the back (it happens that an elderly A4 takes five people to the village, 100 kg each, and "there are no problems for the engine and hodovka"), but in the footsteps and knees - still cramped. The problem is not to say that it is trifling, because it is quite often noted even by the owners of these cars, who drive in the back row, to put it mildly, infrequently.

Love # 3: comfort is high

However, if we ignore the dissatisfied exclamations of the mother-in-law coming from the back sofa (in fact, what difference does it make about the tightness of the car or about the ruined years of the daughter?), The level of comfort of the “four” seems to be very high. At any speed, the cabin is quiet, the heater and air conditioner can cope with any temperature overboard, the standard acoustics give a very good sound, the driver has a lot of useful things at his disposal, such as cruise control and heated glass washer nozzles, and in general - the A4 B5 interior is still beautiful. despite the years. And this is a sign of a very successful design and a guarantee of your long-term friendship with the car.

In the photo: Torpedo Audi A4 "1999-2000 and Torpedo Audi A4 Avant" 1995-97

Hate # 3: age-related motor problems

The first generation "four" gearboxes, both mechanical and automatic, are very reliable, and the same can, in principle, be said about engines. However, there are common problems: when a longitudinally located engine is combined with a front-wheel drive, the cooling system turns out to be quite compact, and on old "fours" it is prone to contamination and leaks, and could also undergo not very successful repairs using a radiator of a smaller size than its native (such Chinese "analogs" are in great demand) and non-original pipes. On V6 engines, a rather frequent breakdown is a "flying" pump.

Love # 2: motors for every taste and budget

However, in general, as we have already said, the engines of the Quartet are very successful in design and are reliable. And their lineup is so extensive that at its ends we, in fact, have different cars, especially if we add to this the presence of front- and all-wheel drive versions: gasoline "aspirated" with 101, 125, 150, 165 and 193 hp. (volume from 1.6 to 2.8 liters), turbocharged 1.8 liters for 150 hp. and a pair of 90 and 110 hp diesels. And if diesels and 1.6-liter mono-drive cars on the mechanics please the owners with low fuel consumption (in reality, the base gasoline engine turns out in the region of 9.3 l / 100 km in the city) in combination with quite acceptable dynamics, then the "older" motors already frankly "going", and the passport 7.3 - 8.3 seconds to "hundreds" for copies with a V6 in good condition are quite real even today.

In the photo: Audi A4 "1999-2000

Hate # 2: low ground clearance

Good handling and stability of the "four" is due to the low center of gravity, which, in turn, turned out to be so partly due to the fact that the body, by the standards of "civilian" models, is actually pressed to the ground. You have to pay for everything, and low ground clearance is part of the payment for thoroughbred riding habits. The ground clearance is only 110 mm, and with it the Audi A4 B5, despite the presence of all-wheel drive versions, remains a purely road model, which is not very comfortable in Russia in comparison with many cars with similar characteristics.

In the photo: Audi A4 "1994–97

Love # 1: good handling

However, having made the "four" squat than the BMW 3 Series E46 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203, Ingolstadt understood very well what they were fighting for. As a result, in terms of maneuverability, the ability to "follow the wheel" and keep the road, the Audi A4 B5 is certainly not inferior to eminent competitors. And today it is not just the main reason to love this car, but a kind of cherry on the cake, ideally complementing all the good that is in this car.

Hate # 1: Garage Can't Fix

At first glance, the well-worn "four" seems to be a kind of democratic car without special requests, since the prices in the secondary market, even for the freshest and most well-groomed copies, barely reach 300,000 rubles. But in fact, a certain "elitism" of the car begins to be felt if you look at it through the prism of maintainability. Not all parts are expensive (although the original interior plastic, for example, is very expensive), and there are no special problems with ordering them, but the repair itself can be costly. For example, a banal replacement of the timing belt will cost about 10,000 rubles - and only because the design features force to "scatter" half of the front end. Do you want to change the air filter yourself without clear instructions and skill? Get ready to spend not a couple of minutes, but an hour and a half. Major repairs of the transmission or engine - only at the service station, no garages.

***

In short, she loves an individual, unhurried and qualified approach - like any Audi. So after all, she is an individuality itself. That was the time when Audi had a style, but did not sculpt the same cars from it, although the kinship of classes, of course, was felt in the guise. However, the Audi A4 B5 cannot be confused either with its contemporaries of a higher class, or with its own “descendants” - it is a very, very recognizable and individualistic car, which is additionally facilitated by a huge number of factory colors and trim levels.

In the photo: Audi A4 "1994–97

"Looks more expensive than the price" - so they say about it. This, in turn, is another incentive to buy an Audi A4 B5. But take your time, it is worth waiting for the end of the holidays and soberly assessing the options - so that the very owning of this outstanding car becomes a holiday.

The Audi A4 B5 is not for sale in authorized Audi dealerships.

Audi A4 B5 owner reviews

Audi A4 B5, 1996

The purchase of my "Swallow" can hardly be called a miracle. The choice was left on a used A4. They decided to buy in Moscow, but upon arriving, they fell into despondency, because the amount in our skinny wallet could only buy used "Hyndai", "Kia" and "Nissan". Having driven all these cars, my "blonde" mind refused to accept the fact that I would have to drive any of them (I do not want to offend the owners of similar cars). And suddenly, by chance, my gaze settled on the familiar "rings". But give 280,000 rubles. it was unreal. I vaguely remember how we persuaded the owner to give up in price: I used all my meager knowledge about the car. And he agreed. And now, finally, we set off. But, only after leaving the gate of the "LLC", we saw that the fuel sensor caught fire. We drove around for a long time in search of a gas station (not knowing the city), got confused in leaving the 3rd transport (I was only a year behind the wheel, and in our city there is no such traffic as in Moscow), but what was my surprise that there was enough gasoline before the life-saving gas station. With air conditioning, the car eats 8 liters per 100 km on the highway. We arrived quickly, hitting several times under a heavy downpour. A week later, we went to the south for a rest on this car (1700 km there and back). On the Audi A4 B5 highway, it's just super. ABS works "iron".

I am currently experiencing immense driving pleasure in the Audi A4 B5. The car has been on Russian roads since 2000. We changed the oil in the power steering (1000 rubles), engine oil plus a filter (1100 rubles + 250 rubles), the oil dipstick was broken (the original was ordered 400 rubles). Starts up well. Rides smoothly, pedals are soft, comfortable even on heels. It's good for me that the steering wheel is adjustable in all planes (adjusted by the child). But the right mirror is small. Gas tank 60 liters. The trunk - even lie down yourself. The salon is spacious enough. The car is not small, but it drives easily, you can park without problems. Even though it was low-slung, we even drove it into the forest. Only through the holes you need to drive slowly and carefully.

Dignity : reliability, good handling, availability of spare parts, good sound insulation.

disadvantages : small right mirror, low rise.

Natalia, Syzran

Audi A4 B5, 1998

Let's start with the pleasant: the interior and the interior comfort level of the "Germans" remains the benchmark. The level of native sound insulation of the Audi A4 B5 amazes all friends riding on "Japanese". It is quiet in the car up to 80 km / h, you start to notice the engine after 4 thousand revolutions, the road makes its way into the salon at 100-110 km / h and does not change its noise up to 160-180 km / h. In the standard configuration, the Audi A4 B5 has 6 front airbags (2 additional side airbags in each seat). The front torpedo and the interior as a whole are made of very good soft plastic, tightened by "leatherette", the steering wheel is leather, the gearshift knob is leather, the armrest is leather. And this is all from the factory. Nice little things in the form of folding cup holders at the gearshift lever, plus two more in the glove compartment.

The Audi A4 B5 holds the road very confidently in any weather - so during a trip to St. Petersburg we spent half of the way in heavy rain, while the speed did not drop below 120-140 km / h on tires that had already been used for 3 seasons. No hints of swimming, dodging or throwing; falling into a rut with water did not cause any supernatural and fatal things - everything is very predictable and smooth. On a dry road, the buoyancy effect was found at speeds over 170, on moderately wet - up to 140, you simply do not notice changes in stability and obedience. My motor (ADR) starts to wake up after 3.5 thousand rpm and confidently holds up to 5-5.2 thousand.

Dignity : salon. Comfort. Controllability.

disadvantages : minor.

Audi A4 B5, 1996

Audi A4 B5 1996, engine 1.8,125 hp, mechanics, climate control, front windows, heated electric mirrors, fabric interior, well, and other delights. The color according to the data sheet goes like metallic gray, but in reality it depends very much on the lighting. Gray in the shade, blue in the sun. In short, a beauty. Having driven her home, he immediately received his wife's assessment. The words were: "This is our car, not like that blue bucket." Mitsubishi was blue. After the joy of acquiring, everyday life began. Every day in the morning to work, all day on business and in the evening to the parking lot. The machine lives in the open air. It's a pity, of course, but there is no garage. But she hasn't given me any special surprises in the winter, she started up on her own in any frost.

Immediately after the purchase, all oils, filters, belts and other "consumables" were replaced. This is already a tradition for me. It is safer and safer this way. By the way, the timing belt was replaced very on time. Two teeth were gone, the rest were torn. Imagine replacing 20 valves, or even cooler "heads" assembly. In general, the machine is quite interesting. The city is quite "nimble", stable on the track. Soundproofing at the level, the engine is almost inaudible, only after 3000 the rumble begins to break through. The suspension is a little harsh, but it swallows large pits imperceptibly.

Dignity : unpretentious engine, easily "eats" 92 gasoline. Roomy in front. There are no problems with spare parts. Good dynamics with moderate appetite.

disadvantages : some parts are quite expensive.

Vladislav, Astrakhan

Audi A4 B5, 1998

I would like to write a review about the 1998 Audi A4 B5 1.6 AHL engine, manual transmission, gasoline. The car has been rolling all these years in Germany, it was operated by a woman before me. The machine is well preserved. All parts are original, nothing has changed in the service except consumables. Unfortunately, I can only make a comparison with the Lanos 1.6 engine, 2007. Of course, it would be good to compare it with its class, for example the Passat and Octavia. I personally wound 20 thousand exploited on our roads and in Europe. I changed all filters, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, alternator belt. I wanted, of course, to change the tension roller, but it did not work out, the service said the old one was still normal, one upper lever, and the rear left bearing. What they write, the suspension breaks, breaks, etc. But depending on where and how to go. It is also possible to smash the "Cruiser" on our roads. If you are racing on checkers under 90, etc. Definitely, the Audi A4 B5's suspension is not weak, not particularly brittle, but rather weak of course. Why? Because with aluminum and multi-link. You should handle it very carefully. Checkers, pits, speed bumps, driving on curbs are all very careful. Because the levers are bent and can knock out. As for the engine - 1.6 AHL is an old, reliable and simplest engine, but a loud engine, very loud and rather weak, of course. If you do not like to drive, you like to drive quietly, then you have enough. On the track, I drove max. With this car, 160 were sitting 4 adults in the cabin, and there was rubbish in the trunk. Of course, the Audi A4 B5 is rather weak on the track. The dynamics are very weak. Recently, I began to eat oil well, especially in the forced mode. Approx. 300 gr. for 1000 km. I would like to change the oil seals and rings. In general, an overhaul of the engine must be done. But interestingly, the car does not smoke, but the oil goes away. Especially after long-distance track trips. Pulleys, rollers are noisy. Some who howl. I also have a catalyst, which will also need to be changed, it also affects the dynamics of the car, strangles the car. The pipes are of good quality, nothing drips, does not leak, antifreeze does not go away. In Lanos, there were constantly problems with the pipes, you can buy a new one, 3 months. And that's all. Dripping, bursting, etc. what torments me, the manual transmission oil seal is dripping, the oil needs to be added once for six months. It's expensive to change. The box works well. No problem.

Dignity : not particularly capricious. Good build quality. For his lifetime, he has everything he needs. Large trunk compared to the size of the car. Reliable enough.

disadvantages : not the softest suspension. Weak 1.6 liter engine. Closely rear passengers.

Nikolay, Mytishchi

Audi A4 B5, 1999

Car Audi A4 B5 1998 in the maximum configuration for that period with a 2.4 liter engine. In general, the device is great and better than many new ones in every respect. Of the pluses, there is probably a wonderful dynamics at any speed, however, after 180 it disappears (it accelerated to a maximum of about 215-225 - there was no time for the speedometer). The handling is excellent, at least 100 you go, at least 200, especially on summer tires. Noise isolation is average, not a standard, but very decent. The salon is generally comfortable, except for the rear seats - well, there is very little legroom. Of the minuses: something constantly breaks, although we must pay tribute - the Audi A4 B5 reaches the service itself, except in cases of breakdown of the crankcase or engine or gearbox, and that was three times (2 times the automatic gearbox is especially expensive). Ground clearance 10 centimeters, probably. During the operation, about 60 thousand mileage invested 250 thousand rubles. And this, as I understand it, is not the end. For those who were surprised by the amount, a list of what I remembered: box pallet 2 times (with all that it implies), high-voltage wires, flow meter 2 times, timing, suspension 2 times, drive (stones in Karelia), glass headlights 7 times viscous coupling, electric fan and much more. I put everything in the original, put it and forget it. In many ways, the driving style is probably to blame. And so happy with the machine, only now I want something higher.

Dignity : dynamics. Noise isolation.

disadvantages : a lot of minor breakdowns.

Alexey, Moscow

Audi A4 B5, 1995

I own an Audi A4 B5 for almost a year, I travel a lot, mainly in the city, 100 km a day is the norm. The car never let me down - so that it stalled somewhere, or broke down to failure. The little things, of course, require care. The engine is reliable, or rather the unit itself. There will be problems with attachments - throttle, chain tensioners, and so on. This engine was put on some old Porsche models - so if you have it in working order, it should be quite high-spirited. There are no questions about the manual transmission, although the 6th gear is very lacking, the car easily picks up 200, but it's a pity to go for a long time at such high speeds. The chassis is comfortable, the car keeps the track well (17 discs), but be prepared to change the set of front suspension arms every six months, since the duplicates are not expensive and, in principle, are not affordable. The body of the Audi A4 B5 is solid, "old-school" German quality - this is not a Korean tin can, which gathers in an accordion at the slightest collision. A powerful amplifier is installed in front (exactly at 1.8) under the bumper, if God forbid you hit someone in the ass, then your radiator will not kiss with the gearbox, and you will leave your place on your own. In general, the car has a lot of "diseases" - power steering, rail, injection pump, injection pump, dangling seats, sagging hinges, and so on, but excuse me, the car is more than 20 years old, and these problems are not solved for very big money. Compared to the problems of new cars. Good luck to all.

Dignity : a balanced car. Good brakes. Dynamics. Availability of spare parts and low price.

disadvantages : cons in small things.

Igor, Moscow

Audi A4 B5, 1996

A soft and comfortable car, with a spacious and pleasant interior, generally worked like a watch in any weather and time of day. Of the major replacements: in the 4th year, the front suspension levers, all 8 pieces in bulk, after I realized that replacing them one by one as the ball valves fail is troublesome and not profitable. And then I replaced one upper lever, then the lower one. Here the top "freshly replaced" is "covered". In general, he did not wait for the third. The shock absorbers were changed twice. But for the first time the truth was confirmed: "The miser pays twice" - produced in Eastern Europe, died in a couple of years. Over the entire period of operation, the Audi A4 B5 has never seriously failed. Once they dragged 7 km to the house in tow - it turned out (funny) that the control fuse had burned out. The second time is more offensive. In the fifth year, at 15 degrees frost, it did not start. Rather, from time to time it got started, but then it went deaf. Diagnosis: a crack in the body of the contact group.

Dignity : soft. Convenient. Spacious.

disadvantages : minor breakdowns.

Sergey, Moscow

The A4 is in many ways a landmark for the Audi brand. To some extent, it can even be called a “breadwinner”. If you look at the history of Audi, then the volume of production of this model has always been very significant. And at some time she even took first place.

In addition, many fans of the brand began their acquaintance with the A4, and only then, having appreciated all the advantages, they moved on to other models.

Powertrain line

The VAG concern in general and the Audi brand in particular has already made it a tradition to provide a wide selection of engines to its potential buyers. The Audi A4 is no exception. The variety of motors on offer across different generations is impressive. This article was created to help navigate such a broad offer.

 • 2.7 (190 HP);
 • 3.0 (204/240/245 HP).

Beyond time and generations

This characteristic can be attributed to engines of the EA827 / EA113 series. After all, various modifications of these units were installed on three generations of the A4 model. The series was represented by 1.6 and 1.8-liter naturally aspirated fours, as well as the legendary 1.8 T modification, which was widely used on a variety of models of various brands of the VAG concern.

Modest 1.6

The junior unit with a volume of 1.6 liters is a modification of the 1.8-liter unit with a short-stroke crankshaft. Due to this, the working volume of the combustion chambers was reduced. It has a timing belt drive, the resource of which is determined within 60 thousand km. The condition of the belt must be carefully monitored, since if it breaks, the valve bends here. The cylinder head is arranged according to the SOHC scheme, that is, with one camshaft. The presence of hydraulic lifters removes the need to adjust the valves. On injection versions there is a variable valve timing system. The engine has a fairly solid resource. Able to calmly retreat more than 300 thousand km. With careful care, there are also much higher mileage figures.

Problems encountered:

 • Vibration;
 • An unpleasant feature of the motor. It is treated with ECU firmware;
 • Floating idle speed. Possible reasons: idle speed regulator, throttle valve contamination, injector condition;
 • High oil consumption. This can be both a harbinger of a complete "capital", and problems with valve stem seals and rings;
 • Intake manifold cracking;
 • Noisy work, knocking. Most often this is due to the peculiarities of the operation of hydraulic lifters.

Famous 1.8

The basis for the 1.8 engine, in the form of a cast iron block, is identical to the younger unit. The increase in displacement is achieved through a longer piston stroke. The timing drive is also belt-driven. The declared resource for replacement is 60 thousand km. But the "heads" could be installed different. There are three options for 8, 16 and 20 valves. Sometimes, the presence of a 20V cylinder head is mistaken for the "head" of a five-cylinder engine. However, it is not. It's just that a system with five valves per cylinder is used here. All three options are equipped with hydraulic lifters.

Regarding the issue of risks in the event of a timing belt break, the 1.8-liter engine is in many ways similar to its less voluminous sibling. On a single-shaft cylinder head with 8 valves, there is still a chance that they will remain intact in the event of a break. Two other, more complex constructive options, clearly imply repair after such an incident.

The 20-valve version is equipped with a variable valve timing system. The same cylinder head is used on the turbo version. Its design differences lie in the presence of a turbocharger with a small intercooler. This gives a significant increase in terms of power characteristics.

With regard to reliability, these motors are doing quite well with this indicator. Under normal operating conditions, atmospheric versions easily pass 300 thousand, and a significant part of them is even more. For natural reasons, the turbocharged version has a smaller resource. Nevertheless, and she has it quite decent. Especially in comparison with modern turbo engines. Most of the copies calmly pass over 200 thousand, and some reach up to 300 thousand. The turbine itself can withstand about 250 thousand km.

Problem areas of 1.8 / 1.8T engines

Since the motors are structurally very similar, their problems also largely overlap. Among the most common are the following:

 • Leaking oil cooler gasket;
 • Regular contamination of the crankcase ventilation system;
 • Failure of the fan viscous coupling;
 • Instability of revolutions. The engine stalls. The most common causes: idle valve, throttle contamination, airbag condition under single injection (if any);
 • Increased fuel consumption. The reasons may be a malfunction of the lambda probe or coolant temperature sensor.

Two-liter "aspirated"

The engine with the designation ALT, producing 130 hp, was installed on the second and third generation of the model. Has established itself as a motor with a calm character. It is suitable for those who prefer predictability and reliability over dynamics. The series is deservedly considered one of the best options for low cost maintenance. The resource did not disappoint either. It is not a problem for the motor to overcome the 300 thousand mark.

According to the reviews of the owners and masters of the service, many specimens have a very decent oil appetite. It manifests itself first in small volumes, and then grows. Usually the zhor stops at 2-3 liters per 10 thousand, but there are also neglected cases. The collective opinion of the owners and servicemen suggests that the whole point is in the poor design of the rings. Due to the weak strut, they do not work properly. At the same time, many owners of cars with such an engine made repairs, after which they managed to reduce the consumption to 500-700 grams of oil by 7-8 thousand mileage.

Sensitive 2.0 FSI

In 2002, the second generation Audi A4 (B6) was the first of all the models of the concern to try on the new 2.0 FSI engine. Its main feature is direct fuel injection. The new 16-valve aluminum cylinder head has a continuous variable valve timing system.

The high-tech power system turned out to be quite sensitive. This can be a bit of a hassle for the owner. The quality of domestic fuel and the harsh climate clearly do not contribute to the stable operation of a complex system. At extremely low temperatures, the engine may simply not start. More often than not, the problem lies in the candles. It is solved by replacing it with plugs from the 1.8 T engine, which have a smaller gap.

Loss of power may indicate carbon build-up in the valves. Due to the fact that direct fuel injection is used, the valve is not cleaned normally. Subsequently, this leads to overlapping of the channels. For the first time, this appears on a run of about 100 thousand km. To eliminate it, disassembly and repair will be required. And since this drawback relates to design features, then in the future such actions will most likely be required. The approximate interval is 100 thousand.

With active oil consumption, it is very likely that the rings are stuck. For a more accurate diagnosis, a serious diagnosis is required. But such a malfunction usually manifests itself on high mileage.

Regular cleaning and attention is required. Although some owners solve the issue with radical methods. They reflash the ECU to work without it, and then jam it.

The operating statistics of this engine show that its average resource is 200-250 thousand km. For some owners, with very careful care, the motors pass up to 300. On the one hand, the indicators are not bad, but on the other hand, the motor has many problem areas. In terms of reliability, this is not the best option.

V-shaped atmospheric "sixes"

The motors of this design installed on the Audi A4 of the first two generations can be safely attributed to the representatives of the classic "old school". Due to the fact that the A4 is a mid-range model, they are much less common than options with four cylinders. Indeed, in comparison with them, they require significantly higher maintenance costs by themselves. However, if you initially consider and evaluate them in your niche, then they are quite reliable. This is facilitated by the simplicity of the design (relative to modern analogues), moderate forcing and low operating temperatures.

For engines with volumes of 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8 liters, versions released after 1996 are considered more successful. Apparently the engineers worked on the "childhood diseases". However, some unpleasant surprises can show up. One of these is the gummy deposits on the valve discs.

The 3.0-liter V-engine installed on the second generation (B6) has a different design and belongs to the BBJ series. It is difficult to call it the fundamentally best in terms of characteristics. There is no clear advantage, but the cost of maintenance is much higher. This is facilitated by the complexity of the design.

All motors in this group have a common problem - tight placement in the engine compartment. After all, they were designed to be installed on larger models of the concern. This leads to the need to disassemble a significant part of the "front end" for maintenance and repair. Such a tight arrangement often makes it impossible to inspect the condition of the engine for fluid leaks and other visual manifestations. Often this leads to the fact that the owners notice the malfunction too late. Cases were recorded when an imperceptible oil leak from under the cylinder head covers led to a full-fledged fire in the engine compartment.

To summarize, the problems with these motors are related to age and oil consumption. Even in a tough urban operation cycle, the resource before overhaul will be no less than 250-300 thousand km. And if the engine was monitored, and repairs were made in a timely manner (for example, replacing caps and rings), then they are able to go through more than 400 thousand.

Legendary 1.9 TDI

At first, the first generation tried on a diesel unit of the EA180 series with a power of 90 hp. Versions fitted to the A4 had a direct injection single-shaft 8-valve cylinder head. The engine is noted as being very reliable and not particularly picky about fuel quality. But it is still not worth pouring in a frank surrogate.

In 1998, production of the next generation of these diesel engines began. The series received the designation EA188. The engine has been significantly improved. Instead of a high-pressure fuel pump, pump nozzles were used, and the designs of the intake and intercooler were also changed.

Engines of these series have become very popular. Possessing good characteristics and consumer qualities, they did not sacrifice a resource. Yes, these are not the easiest motors to maintain. They require attention, care and timely maintenance. But if you adhere to these rules, then their runs quietly exceed 400 thousand km.

Reliable 2.0 TDI EA188 series

As the title suggests, the engine is a sister to the famous 1.9-liter unit. A round figure, a working volume of 2.0 liters, was achieved by increasing the diameter of the cylinders. The differences don't end there. The engine received a cylinder head of a completely different design. The DOHC scheme was used with two camshafts. Initially, the engine developed 140 hp, however, later a more powerful version of 170 hp appeared. This version seriously changed the engine. The changes affected almost all the main details. The cylinder head has changed dramatically.

Despite its high manufacturability, the engine is considered very reliable. Its resource is from 400 to 500 thousand km. However, such figures can only be achieved with quality service.

Faults encountered:

 • Problem with injectors on early 170 hp versions;
 • Regular wear of the edges of the hexagon on the oil pump drive. Occurs every 150-200 thousand km. Solved by preventive replacement;
 • Increase in oil level. The reason may lie in the particulate filter or injectors;
 • Loss of traction. Pereduv. This is evidence of problems with variable turbine geometry. It may be jammed.

2.0 TDI with common rail system

In 2007, a new engine was released based on the EA188 motor. He received the designation EA189. Structurally, it is very similar to its predecessor. The main differences lie in a different cylinder head. Instead of the unit injectors, the Common Rail system was used.

This motor has become a very worthy replacement for its predecessor, because it has no obvious weaknesses. Hence he has a good reputation. And those malfunctions that still appear are not critical.

Identified characteristic faults:

 • Oil pump hex problem. Occurs on versions with balancer shafts manufactured before 2009;
 • Intake manifold swirl flaps jammed.

The resource is very decent for a modern motor. With good maintenance, it is quite possible to drive 350-400 thousand km on this engine.

V-shaped gears TDI

Quite interesting engines, especially in combination with not the largest car, such as the Audi A4. On the one hand, there are very high indicators of power and traction, and on the other hand, decent reliability and efficiency.

This is especially true for engines 2.7 and 3.0. The real resource of the units may well be 400 thousand km. The main problem with such engines is the injectors. They rarely take care of more than 200 thousand, especially with domestic fuel. Replacing them is very expensive, nevertheless, many motorists are not even scared away by this. After all, in fact, the motor no longer has serious problems. Buying an expensive car also implies not the cheapest service, so a significant part of such copies have been successfully serving their owners for many years.

Problematic 2.5 TDI

The direct injection 2.5-liter V6, on the other hand, is usually less well received. These motors can be found on A4 until 2006. On the units of the first series, there were problems with the timing drive. In this regard, premature wear of the rockers occurred. If the repair is not made promptly, then the most sad consequences are possible, up to the repair of the entire cylinder head. In the future, the drive was modified, therefore, on later units, the occurrence of such a malfunction is unlikely.

But the problem with the high-pressure fuel pump was never solved. Structurally, it is very unsuccessful, therefore it cannot boast of reliability. The consequence of such design miscalculations is its constant overheating, and in the future, complete failure.

There are questions about the resource of the cylinder-piston group. Its wear occurs much earlier than other units. Also, the problem can be exacerbated by an extended oil change interval. Therefore, when buying such a copy, high-quality engine diagnostics is simply a must. The variable geometry turbine is also considered not the strongest point of the motor.

Era of TFSI

The VAG concern, and its Audi brand in particular, are among the leaders in the implementation of innovative technological solutions on their cars. The engines were not spared either. There is a trend towards a gradual transition to turbo engines. If earlier the turbo versions were positioned as sports or "charged", then from the third generation began a rapid displacement of "aspirated".

2.0 TFSI EA113 series

This motor was introduced in 2004 as a replacement for the 2.0 FSI. In addition to the turbine itself, the engine is structurally different enough. First of all, the cylinder block, which in this case is made of cast iron. Many other design details have also undergone major revisions.

Among the common problems is oil consumption. Appears mainly with medium runs. The main reasons for this are the valve stem seals and rings. There are also cases when the culprit is the crankcase ventilation valve.

The appearance of knocks and the so-called "diesel" indicates problems with the camshaft chain tensioners. And the loss of traction at high speeds indicates that the injection pump pusher is worn out. He has a relatively small resource, moreover, it is recommended to check his condition every 15-20 thousand km. Such manifestations in the range of the entire acceleration indicate problems with the bypass valve.

Not very long life on this engine and ignition coils. Pay attention to the intake system. It is periodically necessary to clean the intake manifold and monitor the condition of the intake manifold motor.

1.8 TFSI first generation (EA888)

It first appeared in 2007 and was positioned as a completely new development. Despite the fact that this was the first generation, it is considered a relatively successful option among the TFSI. Its resource quite allows the motor to exceed 250, or even 300 thousand km. But this will require very high-quality service from understanding masters.

The identified problems are not that many, but they are. So, the owners can be annoyed by noises and metallic sounds. The reason lies in the timing chain, which stretches to about 100 thousand km. The chain problems don't end there. It can jump. This happens most often when parking on a slope with the hood up. The jump itself occurs at the start. The problem is especially relevant for cars produced before 2010. Then it was partially eliminated by finalizing the tensioners and the chain itself. Nevertheless, such cases continue to be recorded, although much less often.

Floating speed may indicate coking of the valves. The reason lies in the design itself with direct fuel injection. It happens that the reason is in the swirl flaps of the collector, which are prone to contamination.

Increased oil consumption can signal problems with the oil separator. In general, the engine, as a representative of the modern high-tech school, is very sensitive to the quality of the oil and the fuel consumed.

1.8 TFSI second generation (EA888)

A new generation appeared already in 2008. For a while, both generations were produced in parallel. The engine has received some changes. They honed the cylinders in a different way, made changes to the design of some parts, and installed other attachments. Thanks to this, the engine fits into the Euro-5 environmental standards. And although in principle there are few differences from the first generation, the units turned out to be very different in terms of reliability.

The main problem with these motors is a crazy oil appetite. The culprit of this phenomenon is the piston rings of a special design. They were made very thin and with small drainage holes. The first symptoms can appear as early as 50 thousand km, and by 100 thousand the oil can be consumed in whole liters for just one thousand kilometers. All this leads to the fact that the car may require major repairs already in the region of 100 thousand km. There is no single solution to the problem. Sometimes it helps to replace rings with more suitable constructive ones. But it so happens that the condition of the cylinders forces you to bore. This entails the installation of oversized pistons. It is worth noting that in the end the problem was solved by the manufacturer at the end of 2011.

The consequences of such a butter oil can be floating revolutions. This is due to oil deposits from the abundant ingress of oil into a variety of engine cavities. To eliminate the phenomenon, disassembly and tidying of the cylinder head will be required. Some instances require such procedures every 50 thousand km.

In the interval of 100-150 thousand km, the chain is stretched. There is only one solution - replacement. Necessarily the whole set and, most importantly, the parts of the new sample The high pressure fuel pump can also add troubles due to which gasoline can get into the oil. It is treated only by replacing the assembly.

It is rather difficult to talk about any statistics of the resource of these engines. After all, a lot depends on the operating conditions, quality service and, most importantly, the prompt elimination of the causes of malfunctions. In addition, the engine is very negatively affected by short runs and regular driving in city traffic jams.

2.0 TFSI second generation (EA888)

Only the second generation of engines of this series was installed on the Audi A4. Structurally, it was developed on the basis of the second generation 1.8 TFSI, while taking over all its diseases and problems that were discussed in the previous section.

2.0 TFSI third generation (EA888)

In 2011, the series was replenished with a new generation. The engineers made an effort to rehabilitate themselves from the extremely problematic second generation. In the main issue concerning the problem of excessive oil appetite, they have been able to achieve some success. But it is still impossible to call the motor super reliable.

For example, a change in the injection design from direct injection to injection into the intake manifold made it possible to significantly reduce the formation of carbon deposits, but not completely eliminate it. Also, the problem of chain stretching has not been solved. It is still necessary to carefully monitor its condition after 100 thousand km.

The figure of 100 thousand is significant for this motor. In the area of this run, it becomes necessary to adjust the turbine actuator. In the area of the same hundred, oil pressure may drop. There may be several reasons: the worn out condition of the camshafts and liners, malfunction of the oil pump or pressure sensor, filter defects, the quality of the oil itself.

Another known engine problem is associated with phase shifter valves. In this case, the motor "troit", "diesel" and shaking appear. Only the replacement of the faulty unit will help in this. The thermostat and pump also have a low resource.

As for the common resource, it is undoubtedly higher than that of the predecessor of the previous generation. However, it is still very individual, as the motor is very sensitive to operating conditions.

A little about flagships

The most voluminous engine installed on the Audi A4 is 3.2 FSI. This is if you do not take into account the "charged" modifications S4 / RS4. It is not so easy to meet him, since his main purpose was to complete the larger models of the brand and the concern. Therefore, such a specific combination often attracts only true fans of the brand, for whom dynamics is very important.

Direct fuel injection made the engine very moody about its quality. But this is not the biggest problem. The specially coated aluminum block on the cylinders, in combination with the high operating temperatures, results in a fairly rapid scuffing of these surfaces. It is difficult to predict this phenomenon. Some motors quietly drive up to detection and 200 thousand, and some do not reach even 150 thousand. The consequences of this are increased oil consumption, loss of power, the appearance of extraneous noise, and strong vibration. There is only one way out of this - major repairs.

Supercharged heir

In 2008, the 3.0 TFSI EA837 series was released. For its development, 3.2 FSI was taken as a basis. The cylinder block has been redesigned for supercharging, with different crankshaft and pistons. As a result, this reduced the working volume to three liters. The cylinder heads have been slightly modified, but generally remain the same. The main innovation was the presence of a compressor.

The new engine and some unpleasant features were inherited from the ancestor. So it was not possible to completely overcome the problem of scoring. On this unit, it no longer stands so sharply, nevertheless, this occurs on some specimens. Especially if you often drive actively on an unheated engine. The manifestation of this is usually an increased oil appetite. Although it could be caused by the same rings.

In addition, the engine has a rather weak exhaust system as a whole. Burnouts, destruction of catalysts and other violations of the integrity of the structure occur periodically. Some copies annoy with a bang at startup. To identify the cause, a competent diagnosis of the contents of the cylinder head will be required. The low pressure fuel pump and pump are not reliable.

However, the heir is still more reliable than his capricious ancestor. Subject to the rules of good service, the motor can easily live 200-250 thousand km.

The first generation Audi A4 debuted in 1994. Like its predecessor, the Audi 80 B4, it has a longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. More expensive versions were equipped with permanent all-wheel drive Quattro.

In 1998, the A4 underwent a slight restyling. After the update, chrome window bezels appeared, the door handles were painted in body color, and the headlights became one-piece. Technically, the car has remained virtually unchanged.

Audi A4 B5 was distinguished by exemplary anti-corrosion protection and high quality workmanship. The gauges on the dashboard are easy to read and the dashboard looks quite attractive, even today. It is made of high quality plastic. But the durability of the materials, alas, is not sensational.

Engines

Gasoline:

 • R4 1.6 (101 HP), R4 1.8 (125 HP), R4 1.8T (150-180 HP);
 • V6 2.4 (165 HP), V6 2.6 (139-150 HP), V6 2.8 (174-193 HP);
 • V6 2.7BiT (265 hp) - version S4, V6 2.7BiT (380 hp) - version RS4.

Diesel:

 • R4 1.9 TDI (75, 90, 110-115 HP);
 • V6 2.5 TDI (150 HP).

The range of powertrains is very wide. Almost all of them deserve a recommendation, with the exception of the V-shaped sixes. Benefits include simple design, high strength and availability of spare parts. However, a lot depends on the service and the actual mileage. Therefore, never trust the seller's assurances that the engine runs like clockwork.

In gasoline engines, the throttle valve unit costing 10,000 rubles or more often fails. Beware of Chinese counterfeits - they don't last long.

Turbocharged engines impress with flexibility and reliability. When purchasing, it is necessary to check the compression and tightness of the valves.

Most of the 1.9 TDI models have giant mileage, which is also twisted. Nevertheless, even in the case of "hitting" a knowingly faulty unit, bringing it into working condition will not require large financial costs. True, it should be borne in mind that after 300-400 thousand km, there is a high probability of wear of the distribution pump (from 13,000 rubles) and camshaft cams (from 10,000 rubles). Advantages of 1.9 TDI: durability, low fuel consumption and the possibility of increasing power - tuning.

V-shaped motors are already seriously worn out. The 2.8-liter petrol unit suffers from oil pump problems. The 2.5 TDI is very cunning. With high mileage, the camshafts wear out. In addition, it is uneconomical and expensive to maintain and repair.

It is even worse if an automatic transmission is installed in a pair of a turbodiesel. It should be borne in mind that about 60,000 rubles will be needed to repair the machine. Fortunately, the highly problematic Multitronic (CVT) was not used here.

Undercarriage

Despite the overall positive reputation, the Audi A4 B5 has one weak point - the multi-link front suspension. It is made of light-alloy metals and therefore wears out sometimes after several tens of thousands of kilometers. Plus, the front suspension is expensive to repair. The cost of a set of new levers is from 10 to 20 thousand rubles. For the work, you will have to pay in addition about half.

Owners of all-wheel drive modifications are not in the best position either. There, a multi-link suspension is also used at the back. In front-wheel drive versions, a fairly robust torsion beam is installed.

Typical problems and malfunctions

In a 20-year-old car, it is difficult to identify typical faults. Given age, anything can break. Especially in seasoned copies. Fortunately, well-groomed A4 B5 rarely break down, and in case of problems they do not require special knowledge and special services.

Over time, the power steering pump often starts making noise. The cooling system leaks through the pump, radiator and rubber hoses. Advanced age becomes the main reason for the failure of the central locking, generator, starter and backlighting of the air conditioning system controls.

The airbag malfunction indicator comes on from time to time. The reason is the disconnection of the contact under the seat or the loss of contact in the steering wheel. Problems with the wiper mechanism are widespread. To restore functionality, it is enough to replace the bushings and pins. In old copies, pixels on the on-board computer display burn out.

Market situation

The first generation Audi A4 is a fairly popular car in our market. One of the leading ad portals posted about 1,000 offers for sale. Prices are very diverse: from 100,000 rubles for a copy on the go to 400,000 rubles for a well-maintained car.

The difference in condition is colossal. More expensive cars, as a rule, have no traces of corrosion and boast a good interior. Rust, if found, is only on the suspension and exhaust system elements.

Copies from the lower price range often have a shabby interior and body that "shimmers" in different colors or shades (the consequences of inexpensive repairs). In addition, the owners of old A4 B5s often refuse high-quality repairs that require decent costs. Such an instance soon turns into a worn-out carriage. Then on the shoulders of the next owner lay down: overhaul of the engine and gearbox, patching holes and updating the suspension. If the car requires all these works, then the costs will be comparable to the cost of the car itself.

The first generation of the Ingolstadt Quartet received the B5 index. The AUDI A4 B5 has been under development for five years, the serial Audi sedan was introduced in 1994. Based on the year of the start of production, we can conclude that the "four" is the same age as the representative one, but other elite representatives of the "D" class were direct competitors of the model: and. The B5 is built on the same platform as the Passat. The model turned out to be quite in demand, in 1995 alone, 290,000 cars were sold, while the plan for the year was 250,000. In 1998, the millionth car was sold. A4 production ended in 2001.

External review of the Audi A4 B5

In 1994, only a sedan was introduced, but a year later a station wagon entered the market, with its own name - Avant. The versatility of the latter was complemented by roof rails, they are not at all superfluous, since the volume of the luggage compartment of the Ingolstadt car cannot be called a record. The station wagon premiered in Bologna. Audi door handles in both body types are made for the lower grip - this is the trend of the past. The body itself is galvanized and if the car did not tolerate high-quality body repair, then even on the body of copies of the first years of rust you will not see. The car is put on 195/65 R15 tires.

Salon and Equipment

The dashboard is made in the traditional style for the brand - white instrument scales and red arrows. There are no deep "wells" here, as in newer machines, but this does not harm readability. The basic equipment of the cheapest car included front power windows, central locking, front airbags. The front seats can be adjusted in height. The optional seat heating has six modes. On the center console, the triangular emergency gang button takes the leading place, to the right of it there is a retractable cup holder. The climate system unit is located below. The back sofa is able to comfortably accommodate two passengers, but tall people can rest their knees on the back of the chair, and three will be too cramped in the shoulders. As mentioned above, the trunk of the station wagon is not too roomy - only 390 liters, for a station wagon this is clearly not enough, even the sedan holds more - 440 liters. Our motorists will surely like having a full-size spare wheel, not a stowaway.

Technical part and characteristics of the Audi A5 B5

The least powerful 1.6-liter gasoline unit has an eight-valve cylinder head and produces 101 horses. The next in power - 1.8l 20v (five valves per cylinder) - 125 forces, the turbocharged version 1.8t produces 150hp. Six-cylinder units have great power: 2.4 - 165hp, 2.8 - 193hp. It is worth remembering that Audi's six-cylinder units eat up oil and its level should be monitored, because during oil starvation, seizures may appear, and the oil pressure lamp may not light up.

The 1.9t diesel engine produces 90 and 110 forces (depending on the modification), such a motor was installed on the Volkswagen Passat of those years. The most powerful diesel engine - 2.5t V6 produces 150 forces and allows to develop 220 kilometers per hour on the highway.

In gasoline units, the oil should be changed at least once every 15,000, and the 2.5t diesel is especially demanding on the quality of the oil, it should be changed every 7,000 km.

The timing belt should be replaced after 60,000 km, although the manufacturer indicates - 120,000, but there are known cases of belt breakage after 70,000 km.

Already in the basic equipment there is ABS and power steering.

Unlike most representatives of the "D" - class, the A4 has a multi-link suspension at the front, not a McPherson. It is the front multi-link with four levers for each wheel that provides the car with excellent handling and stability. But this design is not very reliable, the upper levers run longer than the lower ones, the lower ones, with constant German operation, it is advisable to change every year. Some owners decided to inject the ball joints, passing the needle through the boot - this allows to increase the service life of the lower arms by 7,000 - 10,000 km. The ball joints themselves are pressed into the lever and change together. Fortunately for the owners, new lower arms began to be installed in 1998, which are capable of reaching 40,000. Almost all AUDI A4 B5s that are on the road today are already equipped with such arms, even if they were released before 1998.

At the beginning of production of the B5, ball joints were installed in the stabilizer struts, they were designed for a mileage of 20,000. In order to increase the reliability of the unit, Audi engineers introduced new struts with silent blocks as in the "eighty", the improved struts run at 40,000 - 60,000.

Front hub bearings and steering tips live for 50 - 70 thousand.

The rear suspension of the front-wheel drive versions is generally more durable than the front, but the rear wheel hubs live less: 30,000 - 40,000. Maintenance of the rear suspension of the Quattro will cost three times more.

Shock absorbers last 70,000 - 100,000.

ABS sensors are not very reliable, they usually ask for replacement once a year.

Spark plugs should be changed every 30-40 thousand, and not 60,000 - as indicated by the manufacturer.

As a gearbox, a five-speed mechanics and an automatic machine for four and five steps are offered. In the Audi machine, the oil change should be carried out in 50-60 thousand. It is very important to fill in ATF (recommended by the manufacturer), and not Dextron - many pour it. The clutch on the manual gearbox serves 130,000 - 150,000.

The six-speed manual is found only on the sporty S4 and RS4. The RS4 has been produced since 1999 and only as a station wagon. Under the hood of the RS4, a turbocharged 2.7 V6 was installed, which produced 380hp and allowed to gain 200 km in 17.7s, it takes 4.9s to accelerate to the first hundred. The S4 has the same displacement engine, but it produces a less impressive 265hp.

Let's pay attention to the technical characteristics of the AUDI 1.8t quattro with mechanics, in the sedan body.
