All about buying and selling cars

What is more profitable, to repair an old car or buy a new one. Is it worth buying an old foreign car What then to buy

Buying a used car is a big event for many Russian citizens and families. Not everyone can afford a new car, many do not think about buying a vehicle at all due to the lack of extra money in the family budget. Therefore, when it is necessary to get a vehicle, many go to the secondary market and try to find more or less normal offers on it. Cars with a great age always cause controversy - is it worth buying them at all? Or is it better to buy a less interesting car with fewer years of operation? Today we will talk about which cars from 15 years old can still be bought in the automotive market. We immediately warn you that any, even the most reliable car, for 15 years of driving on the road can become junk without a remaining resource. But there is another side to the question - you can buy a car with a good level of comfort and excellent equipment for little money.

If the owner took care of the car, kept it in a properly built garage, then the car will be in more or less normal condition in 15 years. Of course, ideal cars of this age simply do not exist, but there are cars with a good remaining resource. It is these cars that are worth looking for on the market when choosing a rather age option. If you think that it is better to buy a 10-year-old VAZ for 3-4 thousand dollars, we hasten to disappoint you. Statistics show that 20-22% of the total operating time of such a car will be spent on minor and medium repairs. And spare parts for Lada today are not cheaper than for the average hand of foreign cars. So such a purchase is not a reasonable decision, in whatever condition you find a domestic car. It is worth looking out for a better car at this age, a class higher and in an elite configuration.

Volkswagen Passat B5 Plus 2002 - an excellent choice

Nice appearance, excellent bodywork, surprisingly wearable interior, a large line of indestructible engines - this is the set of advantages the Passat will give you, even if it is aged. The average price of the 2002 version will be 250,000 rubles. A special version with all-wheel drive, automatic and 2.8 engine will cost about 300,000 rubles.

When buying such a car, consider the following factors:

 • mileage should not be higher than 250,000 km, otherwise the main units and components of the car will already be worn out, you need to check the mileage at the service for secondary factors and computer diagnostics;
 • the complete set should be chosen the richest, since the price does not depend on the content, and rich cars most often received good service and were not operated as a taxi, for example;
 • it is important to inspect the body for rust, since the presence of rusty elements indicates an accident and artisanal painting in the garage, otherwise rust does not appear even at this age;
 • if the interior is worn out, refuse to buy, the car resists wear very well, therefore, in cars with traces of use, the mileage counter was guaranteed to be twisted.

It is better to choose mechanics from boxes, here they are hardy and durable, last longer than engines. The power units themselves are quite reliable, there are practically no serious problems with them. The 2.0 engine without a turbine with 150 power forces (FSI) shows itself best. It is not as powerful, but does not exhibit any operational or maintenance problems.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2000 - a legend from the past

C-Class cars are still considered one of the best in the passenger car segment from Germany. They are well cut, well thought out in size and usable space, and have good engines. There are no serious problems with a car if you buy a decent vehicle after a good selection. Despite the year of manufacture, these machines are quite adequate, and there are several important reasons for this:

 • the body almost never suffers from rust, except that the machine has been in an accident and has been poorly restored, in which case corrosion cannot be avoided, and it is not worth buying such a car;
 • comfort of movement is simply excellent, this is the best European sedan of its time, which demonstrates the colossal resource of all equipment and the huge potential in operation;
 • rear-wheel drive makes the trip somewhat unusual, but technically everything in the car is so well thought-out that there are no doubts and inaccuracies in transport management;
 • visually, the car is not inferior to any of its rivals for similar money on the market, the car looks decent and continues to delight with its high segment of the elite class.

On average, you can buy a 2001 C-Class for 300,000 rubles, but there are more expensive versions. Given the lack of a large number of customers for these machines due to the relatively expensive service, it is easy to bargain. Better to buy a typewriter that doesn't have many owners, otherwise it is almost guaranteed to be problematic. It is worth giving preference to a 2-liter unit with 163 horsepower, it is quite hardy.

Toyota RAV4 2001 - a car for life

The Japanese crossover RAV-4 turns out to be an excellent purchase both in the salon and in the automotive market. The 2001 generation does not differ in universal comfort, the car is quite tough and often it is difficult to pass bumps. But you get a real crossover with a good package, in which everything works to this day. This is rare, so you can close your eyes to small nuances.

The advantages of choosing a Toyota RAV4 are as follows:

 • the body is beautiful, there are practically no problems in operation, rust occurs only on the tailgate and in the area of the wheel arches, and even then closer to the mileage of 250,000 km, there are no problems before;
 • simple engines led by a 2-liter unit for 152 horses do not require significant attention, it is enough to change the oil on time, the gearbox is also unpretentious and simple;
 • endurance even under not the best operating conditions, the machine easily gets out of difficult off-road situations, does not break under serious loads on important units;
 • the car is distinguished by reliable peripheral technology, this is the golden age of Toyota, when cars of this brand began to be associated with incredible reliability, comfort and quality in details.

Many representatives of that generation have reached this day. Some of them still look pretty decent, have factory paint on most parts, and require little or no investment. When buying, choose a simple technique, it is better to buy a car with a mechanic. Four-wheel drive works without problems, but you must remember to service it. Otherwise, there will be no problems in operation up to 300,000 km.

Nissan Primera 2002 - comfort and reliability

In the early 2000s, Nissan cars were considered the technological and innovative choice in the transportation market. To this day, these cars offer excellent comfort of movement and simply incredible design. The example looks pretty good today, even if there are some oddities in it. If you manage to find a car without huge mileage, you will get the following benefits when buying:

 • very interesting interior design, the instrument panel is located in the center, and after a while it starts to like it, nothing distracts you from the trip and enjoying the car;
 • the materials are of very high quality, the transport is just great, you will enjoy the trip in the car, despite its rather advanced age and high mileage;
 • according to the sensations of operation, the car has a huge margin of comfort, the car has everything you need for convenient movement, as well as climate settings, the suspension is soft and reliable;
 • even after so many years of operation, Primera has retained its premium quality, many owners evaluate it positively, despite the various minor nuances that appear in use.

Do not think that after purchasing the Example you will not need to travel to the station. The car is reliable, but in detail there are many moments that will have to be closed with the help of a professional master. But these small costs are fully paid off by a comfortable and carefree car ride. One has only to try Primera on the go to understand its benefits. You can find a car for 250-300 thousand rubles.

Honda CR-V 2002 is a great SUV for any conditions

The very popular Honda CR-V model was updated in 2002 and came out in the second generation. The generation turned out to be very successful, and from the very first year there were no childhood diseases in it. The car is perfect both for the comfort of movement and for the feeling of operation. You do not have to repair and worry about various properties. The Honda benefits are clear to the buyer:

 • this is a real crossover with all-wheel drive and other advantages of off-road technology, the car has a simple design, albeit not the most modern components;
 • the 2.4 engine with 160 horsepower is simply wonderful, until now there are no problems with it, the resource exceeds 300,000 km, but it is better not to buy machines of this age;
 • the interior design is simple, but this has a big plus, you get a practical car, assembled from quality materials, the interior may still look new;
 • best-in-class performance, it was Honda that held the lead in global sales at that time and became a bestseller from generation to generation, it was well deserved.

Today the machine is already of age, so you should be very careful when choosing it. Pay attention to the body as this is the most expensive part of the vehicle. The engine should be given for diagnostics at the service station to find out the real mileage, the main nuances. Without proper verification, you are unlikely to be able to buy a good car without technical problems and shortcomings. The price of such a car is from 440,000 rubles.

We offer you to watch a video about the Honda CR-V in this generation:

Summing up

Quality cars can be found even for ages 15 and up. The main aspect is the refusal to buy domestic vehicles, as well as cars with a mileage of over 250,000 km. Make sure that the car you choose still has a sufficient resource and can pleasantly surprise you with its technical characteristics. Please note that the transport must have a completely adequate body, otherwise, after a few years, you will have to do welding work. Check the absence of corrosion on the bottom, sills, arches, make sure the quality of the paintwork.

It is quite natural that at this age the car will not have all the factory paint. Tint on bumpers, fenders, doors is quite normal. But if the car is completely painted, it is better to abandon the idea of buying such a car. You will never know in what alterations the car has been. Also, refusal to purchase can be caused by a huge number of previous owners. Usually such machines spend a lot of time in the hands of one owner. If this is not the case, it is likely that there are problems with the car. What do you think, is it worth buying a car over 15 years old?

Old foreign cars are popular. Some people buy a car as the first car to hone their driving skills, and so that the car does not feel sorry if it suddenly breaks down or gets damaged. Others simply do not have the financial ability to buy a newer car. Still others (there are few of them) appreciate the quality of old foreign cars.

Which car is considered old?

Each car owner has his own opinion about the age of his car. There is no clear division for cars, but there are some nuances.

The first is car manufacturer warranty... For most cars, the warranty condition sounds like this: "3 years or 100,000 mileage - whichever comes first" or "2 years without mileage limitation." There are other conditions, but these 2 are the most common and frequent. During this period, the car must be repaired free of charge if a breakdown occurs, or changed if it is impossible to repair. That is, after 3 years, the car is no longer considered new. But the old car owner is unlikely to name it either.

Next term - 5 years... It is after so many years that German experts advise changing the car to a new one. In Russia, after 5 years, the vehicle is handed over to the salon not under the Trade in program, but under the Utilization program. But many, even after 5 years, continue to operate the car.

The next psychological frontier is 10 years... After 10 years of operation, the machine is definitely old. Traces of corrosion appear, consumables have been replaced more than once, and more and more often, repairs to car elements are required. And the owner is already well acquainted with many auto repair shops.

Nevertheless, foreign cars over 10 years old are in demand in the secondary market. It happens that old foreign cars are taken not for the sake of driving, but for the sake of being able to dig deeper into the car. There are amateurs who restore old cars - this is a hobby for them.

The advantages of an old foreign car

People willingly buy old foreign cars, considering them the best alternative to the cars of the Russian automobile industry. Maybe someone considers such an acquisition unprofitable, but still, old foreign cars have advantages:

 • These cars are cheap, and some are very cheap.... Everything, of course, depends on the year of manufacture, but some cars can be purchased for less than 100,000 rubles. For the first car - a very reasonable price.
 • Old foreign cars are less likely to be stolenthan brand new cars, statistics say. The owners of new cars are shaking for their car, registering a comprehensive insurance policy, buying garages. Owners of old foreign cars do not need all this.
 • Many people mistakenly believe that if the car is old and out of production, then finding a spare part for it is quite difficult. This is not so: old or broken cars are bought up in order to then sell usable parts from them. Such offers are full of flea markets and ad services. You can buy parts there very cheaply.
 • Old foreign cars do not mind... It doesn't matter for what purpose the car was purchased, as the first car, as an ordinary workhorse, to teach the offspring to drive or for other reasons. It is not a pity to wrinkle it, scratch it.
 • There are connoisseurs of the quality of old foreign cars... Some manufacturers admitted that now they deliberately make low-quality equipment so that people buy more. This really increases the turnover. The same goes for vehicles. Back in the early 2000s, cars were much more reliable than modern foreign cars.
 • Old foreign cars are less often slowed down by traffic police officers. What to take from the "old"?
 • If a foreign car is very ancient, then this is already a rarity... Applies to machines from the mid-20th century. But not everyone can afford such a foreign car. Rare cars are quite expensive. Especially in the black are those who buy a wreck for a pittance, repair it themselves, bring it to mind, and then make good money on resale.

Cons of purchasing

Sellers of old foreign cars are trying to get rid of cars for a reason. They also have a bunch of disadvantages, which they try to keep silent about when selling:

 • You will never know for certain the history of the car... Old cars rarely have 1 owner and original title. Why is the current owner selling it; who the previous owners were; how they drove the car, whether carefully; mileage real or twisted; was the vehicle involved in an accident and was it stolen? These and many other questions often remain unanswered.
 • Also, having bought an old car, even if it is on the move, you will not know how worn out the brakes are, whether the airbags work, how long the battery holds, and many other technical points that directly affect road safety. Even an automotive expert cannot check everything on the spot and give a 100% guarantee.
 • In an old car more often something breaksthan the new one. This means that by taking a car at a cheap price, you will be investing additional funds in it. Sometimes they are big.
 • Appearance... Women are more likely to pay attention to this than men. Although rust, scratches, dents, cracks on the glass - everything that will certainly be on an old car does not add to its attractiveness even in the eyes of men. Of course, all the shortcomings can be corrected, but why do this on an old car?
 • Increased fuel and oil consumption... The older the car, the more fuel it uses. Experts advise adding 5% to the manufacturer's declared consumption every 100,000 kilometers. The same is with oil. The main reason for the increased oil consumption is the wear of many parts. And wear = age.
 • Exhaust... Previously, there were no standards for vehicle emissions, so new foreign cars sin with their harmful emissions.
 • Comfort... Power steering, heated seats, easy gear shifting, armrests - old foreign cars cannot always boast of such a set of functions that make driving easier.
 • The technical aspects have also changed.... A young auto mechanic, yesterday's student, may simply not understand what kind of construction it is on your old foreign car.

Buying a used iron horse is always a lottery... You can get caught as a car that is quite suitable for driving, or you can buy outwardly pretty junk. In any case, the purchase of an old foreign car is not an investment of money, but rather a purchase of a toy, having played enough with which after a few years, you can simply throw it away.

Which car to buy when you have the money for a decent new car? In the circle of acquaintances of every motorist, there is sure to be an adherent of the option of acquiring an old foreign car. Its arguments will be approximately as follows: “My neighbor drives an old Toyota (Mercedes, etc.), she is already 20 years old, but it does not break down, he only changes oils and filters. They knew how to do it then! An eternal machine, and its engine is a millionaire! Look for a foreign car, which is 15 years old or even more, the main thing is that it is vigorous and well-groomed ".

Well, let's consider this option. The benefits are clear.

Pros of buying an old foreign car

- Firstly, car manufacturers in those years really tried to make cars reliable.
- Secondly, in comparison with modern cars, the device of the vehicle is unpretentious, well known to mechanics, information is available on how to repair, what are the pros and cons of the car, etc. While there are some exceptions, this is especially true for early-generation fuel systems.
- Thirdly, parts are still produced for old mass models, including many non-original ones, for every taste and wallet. Also, you can easily buy new parts at auto dismantlers.
- And, fourthly, such cars are of little interest to hijackers.

Now let's talk about the cons

However, this option also has serious disadvantages. Perhaps the most obvious is that due to the prohibitive customs duties associated with the very high rates on cars over five years old, the import of old used cars from other countries into Russia has become almost impossible.

Previously imported foreign cars have been running on our roads for at least ten years. Over the years, the equipment has managed to get worn out a lot due to climatic, road and other Russian realities. Most of the cars on the Internet that look "excellent" and claim the proud title of "grandfather's garage version", in fact, are well-disguised very "tired" copies that have undergone refurbishment and pre-sale preparation. The main goal of the sellers of such machines is to cover up all defects of the vehicle and traces of its operation with minimal investments.

The case when the car is really in excellent original condition may turn out to be "slightly" criminal. Perhaps his identification numbers have been changed. Or it was imported from abroad in an unofficial way "under documents". It's definitely not worth getting involved with the purchase of such a car, since the traffic police examination easily detects interference with the identification numbers.

Thus, there is an extremely limited number of “aged” foreign cars on the market that are in a decent, well-groomed condition, which gives hope for their trouble-free operation. But if the previous owners sell them, then, mainly, through friends. And the chances of buying them online or from a car dealership are close to zero.

It should also be borne in mind that a car over twenty years old has an almost zero ecological class. And in our government every now and then there are ideas how to push such cars off the roads, or at least make their owners pay huge taxes. And even better - to transplant them to new machines, which are produced in abundance at Russian screwdriver factories. These include restrictions on entry into the center of large cities for old cars, and the introduction of a differentiated transport tax. So far, these are only projects, but with the active support of the automaker lobby and a deficit budget, these ideas will sooner or later be implemented.

A person who is far from repairing his car on his own or spending time studying (even theoretical) its device, spending money on repairing and replacing units and parts, should not mess with foreign cars at a "venerable age." Especially if big annual runs are coming.
Most of these machines have wear over 70%. This means that almost everyone is at risk. Non-original, however, too, since for the most part their quality is not comparable to the original.
The task of a conscientious repairman is to predict the resource of a particular part (assembly) so that the car does not "get stuck" on the road, and a more serious emergency situation does not happen. And it only makes sense to change what is needed for the coming year or season, or 10 thousand kilometers. Otherwise, the operation of such a car will be too costly, it is more profitable to take out a loan and buy a new car.

What then should you buy?

Therefore, rather than buying an old foreign car, it is better to buy a used, but well-groomed and still having a sufficient resource car of a domestic manufacturer - we mean VAZ. Or take a used budget (but not Chinese) foreign car, albeit in a much cheaper configuration, but with a "fresh" year of production and low mileage.

And in conclusion, recall the famous saying of Henry Ford: "The best car is new".

P.S. Although the operation of a new car requires significant financial costs. We wrote about this, for example, and plan to raise this topic in the future.

Alexey Poltavsky, Autoclub78

I decided to speak out on this matter, because many of my readers and viewers ask me about it. The question is really not unambiguous and it is conceived before a person who changes a used, usually an old car (which is "ushatan" and sold) and now there is a HUGE choice - what to take a used (but foreign car) or a new (but our domestic, as a rule) VAZ ? We need to approach from several points of view, we will all consider them today, there will be a video and a vote below, so we read and watch ...

To begin with, recently the situation with the Russian car industry is slowly but surely changing, and as I think for the better. It started with BU Andersen, when he began to raise the quality of the brand. Moreover, no one even thought to abandon the old models, I'm now talking about PRIORA, KALINA, GRANTA, LADA 4X4, they just decided to tighten them up a bit, which I think was almost done. But also next to these models new "VESTA", "X-RAY", "LARGUS", LADA URBAN were developed.

However, in the Russian minds there is a strong stereotype that everything that VAZ produces is bad, and even more or less a foreign car will not only be better, but MUCH BETTER! BUT is it just in modern realities, because we will take a new LADA, but a used foreigner.

About the price bar and age

"FOREIGN GUESTS" now have a whole cart, ranging from DATSUN (as I think "doped" GRANT), ending with top-end BMW, MERCEDES, AUDI. Therefore, we will classify them into two large subspecies, these are inexpensive in maximum configurations up to 1 million rubles and expensive - over this amount (I'm talking about new cars now)

Moreover, we will choose a used version, which means that it should not exceed 500,000, this is really the price of a modern, well-equipped AVTOVAZ.

I also want to talk about the age limit, yet 5 years is the maximum figure, in my opinion, if younger is better, because, for example, many Koreans have a 5 year warranty and 150,000 mileage

Inexpensive used foreign car

This is the most practical deal if you have 400 - 500,000 rubles, then you can take an almost new one - LOGAN, SANDERO, SOLARIS, RIO, ALMERA, POLO. Or a little older FOCUS (second generation), MAZDA3, CRUZ, ASTRU, LANSER, COROLLU, etc. (there are really a lot of them).

That is, these are non-ALPHA cars of brands (such as BMW, AUDI, MERSEDES). This is B-C class, they won't have complicated turbines, diesel engines, robotic transmissions and other nonsense. Usually these are ordinary "aspirated" with volumes of 1.2 - 1.6 (rarely 1.8 - 2.0),.

AS I BELIEVE - if you take a used foreign car, then it is from this group. It is here, if this is not a "dead barn" (with a range of 250,000 km), you can drive happily ever after

And such cars as, say, LOGAN, SANDERO, DASTER, of the first generations generally run some "crazy" runs, without any serious investments (only "consumables"). Koreans, such as Solaris and RIO, are also very reliable and give any kind of comfort and have the greatest guarantee of all in our country.

If you take bigger cars, LANSER, COROLLA, ASTRA, KRUZ, MAZDA3 - take it first-hand, and you should definitely look to test power units, transmissions, twisted runs, "beating", etc. If you vparyat "killed" car, then you will invest in it your hard-earned money and a lot and EXPENSIVE.

REMEMBER - repair of foreign cars, especially class "C" (and higher) costs two, and maybe three times more than our domestic cars

Of course, at a relatively low price of 400 - 500,000 rubles, you can find a good copy, with low mileage, winter tires and so on. Moreover, the quality of the interior, design, performance of technical units will really be on top. BUT SUCH MACHINES ARE FEW! And when buying, you should take a knowledgeable person with you.

You also need to be mentally prepared to invest in repairs. Still, the used option is a roulette.

Expensive used foreign car

My opinion here is unequivocal - TO TAKE SUCH, I DO NOT ADVISE YOU. FOR 400 - 500,000 rubles, it will already be a shaggy year (about 6 - 8 years old). These are exactly those ALPHA BRANDS about which I wrote above - AUDI, MERCEDES, BMW, if you take the Japanese KAMRI, ACCORD and so on.

Of course, there is a brand, and comfort, and prestige (albeit an old car, but still). And again, this is not LADA.

However, this option is almost 100% hit on the loot (less often with the Japanese). Of course, you may be lucky and you will take some MEPC which is 8 years old with a range of 30,000 km. BUT this randomness tends to zero.

How it happens in practice. A young guy who passed his license a couple of years ago and learned to drive more or less (and they buy such cars) buys, say, MERS W203 for 400,000 rubles (say 2006). The mileage, as he was told, is 150,000 kilometers (yeah, for 11 years that!) And he is all so smartly laughing at his neighbors who bought themselves VESTA, X-RAY and other miracle of our technology.

But his joy will not be long, because this car is already 11 years old and in the forehead something will happen to it. And repairs, even not with original spare parts, often go out of hand, the turbine alone will cost from 100,000 rubles, if you take the originals. And here all the comfort and beauty + prestige will fall below the plinth, and there will be such a miracle a guy who is all cool, ride a minibus (pay a loan for this shed and save money for repairs).

And the neighbors who bought new cars, but a lower class, will drive and rejoice.

Pros of buying :

 • Kudos
 • Design
 • Quality
 • Reliability
 • Comfort
 • Equipment

Minuses :

 • Expensive renovation (especially if these are prestigious brands)
 • Turbines, robots and other delights, it is corny that there may not be specialists in your city
 • Large taxes
 • "Eats" a lot of fuel
 • Breaks often
 • Many years

In these points, I have collected both inexpensive and expensive options. Actually it is so

New, but domestic VAZ

I repeat once again - I am not protecting anyone! I myself had a lot of domestic cars of this particular brand, "I drank a lot with them" - BUT IT WAS BEFORE.

Let's think about how the situation with AVTOVAZ is developing now (I do not pretend to be a super analyst, this is just my opinion)

Now the controlling stake belongs to the corporation "RENAULT-NISSAN" the government has stopped pumping in billions (70 - 80) every year, do not understand why! Of course there is support, but it is much less.

The new administration dispersed a bunch of "bunglers" and "parasites", not all of them (many were still whining), but still. They made it clear - if you want to work, make high-quality "components" and we will work with you. The downside was that they began to buy a lot of spare parts abroad, but now the situation is changing in the opposite direction (since the sanctions are helping).

Prices have gone up, but cars have gotten better. Otherwise, if they are "crap-crap", just no one will buy. We pulled up and modernly equipped the brands known to us, KALINS, PRIORS, GRANTS. Now they also have air conditioning (climate control), heating (and windshield), navigation (with large monitors), and so on. Of course, the interior trim remained from budget materials, but now they do not rattle, do not rattle.

If you take X-PARADISE, LARGUS - then these are actually VERY reliable machines. They are based on the "B0" platform on which the same SANDERO, LOGAN, DASTER, TERRANO are built. THIS IS A VERY STRONG AND SIMPLE PLATFORM. I wanted it for a long time and without any obvious jambs.

VESTA is our development brought to mind. In reality, it can compete with such cars as SOLARIS, RIO, POLO, ALMERA, AVEO, etc. in its class it is not very bad.

Again, their own developments appear, this is a robot, a 1.8-liter engine. If there are no critical problems with the engine, then about the robot ... (there will be a separate article).

Well, again, a new car, no one drove it in front of you! The warranty is 3 years (or 100,000 km), now it really works. YES, and people have now become different, they know their rights more, and just go to court! In general, the "picture" is changing, now taking VAZ is POSSIBLE! Especially if this is a new generation of machines.

Again, 80% of all our "people's tuners" tune our cars, from "classics" to PRIORA. It seems to me that only our cars can be pumped so expensively.

Well and spare parts, they are everywhere and everywhere. You can find anything, and the prices are affordable. I remember seeing the guy's face when he found out how much it costs to repair the DSG, he said that for this money you can buy PRIORA and don't care!

Positive aspects of the new AVTOVAZ :

 • Cheap repair
 • They are becoming more reliable now
 • Nobody drove before you, nobody killed
 • WARRANTY
 • Acceptable price
 • PACKAGING, there is everything in modern cars
 • State support, soft loans and programs
 • Easy repair
 • Just for inexpensive tuning

Negative points :

 • These are budget cars (not even class "C")
 • The quality of the interior trim and plastic (although in X-RAY and VESTA already more or less)
 • Not prestigious (this stereotype still lives in us)
 • Break down. It also happens (especially cars of the first generations)
 • Stand at the level of foreign cars. YES now the price tag is growing

All in all, this is a very practical purchase. If you need a car to travel (for work, in a taxi, to summer cottages, with children - there is a seven-seater LARGUS) then this is your choice. These cars are not for show-off, they are "hard workers".

An article about whether it is worth buying a new car or is it better to repair an old one. Pros and cons of different points of view. At the end of the article - an interesting video on how to buy a new car at a discount.

Important criteria

In order to look at the problem from a practical point of view, and not an emotional one, you should take into account several important criteria for whether or not buying a new car is necessary:

1. Expenditure on vehicle maintenance

The question of maintenance costs is the most important of all, and in order to answer it, you need to calculate how much the maintenance of the machine has cost, for example, in the last 3 or 6 months. To do this, on a sheet of paper on the right, you should write down all expense items, and on the left - the amount that was paid for the period taken.

Expenses include not only maintenance, fuel and the cost of parts, but also such expenses as washing, insurance, taxes, technical inspection, etc. If the payment is a one-time like an annual technical inspection, then the amount is divided by 12 (months) and the result is multiplied by 3 or 6, depending on the selected period for calculations.

After that, you should make similar calculations for a potential new car and compare the results. If the consumption for the maintenance of the old car significantly exceeds the theoretical consumption for the new one, then you should seriously think about changing the car. But this is just a reason to think, and not to run to the salon this minute.

2. Possibility of savings

It is likely that the old car will cost significantly less if you change the workshop to a less prestigious, and therefore not so expensive.

Another option is to find an intelligent private mechanic who will make repairs for a small fee or tell you what is the cause of the breakdown. In the latter case, the service station employees will not be able to so easily hang on your ears and rip off money for fixing something that does not need to be repaired.

It often happens that the workshop not only takes into account the cost of repairing a workable part, but also changes it to a worn one, or the original to a copy. Therefore, a small amount for a neighbor-mechanic with experience, if not for repairs, then for checking the conscientiousness of the chosen car service will pay off with interest.

Another way to save money is to find out the prices for parts that have to be changed quite often. This includes brake pads, spark plugs, filters, and more.

After spending a certain amount of time and effort, you can find a store with reasonable prices. It is also worth checking the auto parts bulletin boards regularly for brand new parts at prices well below market prices. Many enterprising people sell completely new products in this way in order to avoid paying taxes and maintaining the outlet.

3. Time costs

If trying to get your car up and running takes most of your budget and time as well, is it worth continuing in the same spirit? Calculate how much time you spend looking for new parts and sitting in the garage trying to save money on repairs at the auto shop. Or how much time you spend in public transport or a taxi while the car (once again) is idle for repairs.

Time is no less valuable resource than money. Not to mention the constant hassle that accompanies breakdowns and whims, which are famous for "aged" cars. Perhaps mental peace is more expensive than the cost of purchasing a new car.

4. Financial opportunities for buying a new car

You can buy a car on credit or in installments, but is it worth it? Maybe your old iron friend is not in such bad shape to pay interest on a loan for several years?

It is worth comparing the costs of an old car with the additional costs of a new one. It is quite possible that the percentage that you will pay to the bank for several years will be safe to take care of your old car and, at the same time, save it for a new one.

If, considering all the above nuances, you are convinced that you still have to change the car, then you should proceed to the next stage - which car is more profitable to buy, new or used.

Buying a new car - pros and cons

Over the past few years, have you suffered from your old car - breakdowns, repairs, starts up every other time, does not obey the steering wheel well, breaks down again, etc.? Or have you heard enough scary stories from friends on this topic? Naturally, you see some pros in buying a brand new car and ignore the cons.

Advantages of buying a new car

 1. Factory guarantee. All worries about checking, replacing spare parts and other work will hardly affect you. At least until the expiration of the warranty period.
 2. Digital equipment. The latest models are fully equipped with the latest technology, which greatly simplifies transport management and increases its safety.
 3. Possibility of return. In the event of a breakdown or any deficiencies, a new car can be returned to the salon within a few days after purchase. Or demand the elimination of deficiencies at the expense of the company.
 4. Legal purity. When buying a car in the showroom, you can be sure that all documents are in order and there is no “emergency and criminal trail” behind the car.
 5. Wide range of models. Of course, the used car market is also diverse, but it is difficult to find the latest automotive or auto products that meet all technical parameters.
 6. Relatively long service life without the need for repair. The likelihood that a new car will need repairs in the near future is extremely small. Although it is still not worth excluding it.
 7. Psychological satisfaction. For many motorists, the realization that a "stranger" was driving their brainchild is a painful sensation. Often, the desire to be the first and only one plays a decisive role in tipping the scales in favor of buying a new car.
 8. An opportunity to get a profitable loan. It is much easier to find a favorable loan offer for the purchase of a new product. Such opportunities rarely apply to used cars, and it is often impossible to get a loan for used cars at all.
 9. There is no need to undergo technical inspection. The first technical inspection of a new car takes place three years after the start of operation.
 10. No surprises. Buying from an authorized representative allows you to avoid unpleasant surprises like an "emergency past", serious and not completely eliminated breakdowns, primed and painted over dents, etc.

Disadvantages of new cars

 1. The cost of the car itself. 15 - 20% of the total amount you pay just for the fact that the car is new. After a year or two of operation, its price decreases by about 25%, after which it freezes at this level. That is, you pay almost a quarter of the amount only for the "new" symbol.
 2. Factory guarantee. Yes, that's right - plus smoothly but surely develops into a minus. To keep the warranty, you will have to fulfill the agreed conditions - service only in official showrooms, and this is a pleasure that costs money. After all, repair of a breakdown at the expense of the manufacturer is not possible in every case, which means that you will have to carry out repairs at your own expense from an authorized dealer. Not to mention that the equipment should remain the same as provided by the manufacturer. Until the expiration of the warranty period, you will not be able to replace the installed parts with improved ones, make tuning and even set up a cheaper alarm. The result of all this is excessive costs.
 3. The need for insurance "CASCO". Annual contributions represent more than an impressive amount, so another item is added to the expense item.
Despite all the advantages, not everyone can afford to buy a new car, let alone payback. Is owning a new car worth the cost and is there an alternative?

If your car is only a few years old, then it is much more practical to spend some money on a thorough repair, and it will serve just fine for a few more years.

If the age and condition of the car require it to be replaced, and the prospect of buying it in the salon does not cause delight, then you can limit yourself to purchasing a used car.

Used cars - pros and cons

One of the reasons for buying cars in the salon is the fear of not getting out of the garage or auto repair shops again. This is especially true for people who have already had a sad experience in this area.

Cons of used cars

 1. There is no guarantee. But there are no obligations either. As mentioned above, warranty service also has an unpleasant side.
 2. High fuel consumption. The older the car, the more it consumes fuel. Cars 6-10 years old consume 10-15% more fuel than new ones.
 3. The risk of breakdowns increases every year. The older the car, the more often it needs repairs.
 4. High insurance premiums. Insurance rates for old cars are often much higher than for new ones.
 5. Purchase risk. If you decide to buy a used car, you should beware of pitfalls. For people who are poorly versed in all the intricacies, it is better to take a knowledgeable person with them who will not allow themselves to be fooled.

Advantages of a used car

 1. Cost. For the amount that you have to pay in the salon for a mediocre model, you can buy a 2 or 3 year old car of a higher class.
 2. Economical content. No factory warranty - no content restrictions. Services of an inexpensive auto repair shop, spare parts at reduced prices, etc.
 3. Possibility to equip to your liking. Tuning enthusiasts buy used cars, as this allows them to make an individual model out of a standard "iron horse". A more practical option is to change the acoustics, install an alarm, toning and other important little things.
 4. A used car does not mean a wreck, which will not differ from your old car of fifteen years of age. If you approach the purchase issue thoroughly, then finding an almost new car in good condition is not so difficult. Indeed, in our time, many have the opportunity to change cars every few years. And the reason is not that he is in a bad state - it can be prestige, an attempt to keep up with fashion, or "position obliges." Ideally, if there is such a person among your acquaintances, and you are sure of his decency.

conclusions

A one-time serious breakdown of an old car is not a reason to purchase another. It is worth changing a car only if the cost of its maintenance exceeds the cost of buying and maintaining a new one, or when a bank account allows you to spend a certain amount without prejudice to the main budget. Otherwise, it will be much more practical to spend some money on repairs.

Buying a new car is justified if:

 • purchasing it will not make a dent in your budget;
 • you plan to use it for at least 3 years;
 • prestige and reliability are important to you;
 • you are poorly versed in technology and do not want to risk buying a used one;
 • you need a specific model, the complete set of which suits you completely.
Buying a used car is justified if:
 • your budget is not designed for high spending;
 • you do not have enough funds for a new car, whiter than a high class;
 • you are well versed in technology and it is difficult to deceive you by imposing a low-quality product;
 • you expect to service the car yourself.
You should focus on repairing an existing car if:
 • his age is less than 5 years;
 • the car needs an average cost of repairs to put it in order;
 • you can reduce maintenance costs;
 • you do not have enough funds to buy a new model, and there is no point in changing one old one to another.
Thoroughly thinking everything over, weighing all the pros and cons, it will not be difficult to choose the most appropriate option for each specific case.
