Common reasons why a car engine won't start

The reasons can be both general and specific. Let's consider the most common problems.

The first place, perhaps, can be safely given to problems with the battery. Very often the engine will not start as a result of the battery discharge. In this case, it is not necessary that the charge is completely absent. In many cars, the starter will refuse to turn if the battery is delivering less than 10 volts. Given this information, it becomes clear that you should not forget to recharge the battery in time.
However, not always a complete failure or problems with starting the engine are associated with a low battery level. Quite often, oxidized or poorly fixed terminals are to blame. From time to time, you need to clean them with sandpaper to remove the coating of the oxide film, which does not conduct electricity well. The same goes for the contacts on the battery itself.
After stripping, it is recommended to lubricate the terminals with machine oil or lithol so that they do not oxidize. Better yet, change the copper terminals and install brass ones.

In second place in terms of frequency, you can put a very simple and harmless reason - lack of fuel. There are two options: it may not be in the tank, or it does not enter the engine.
The driver's actions in this case are extremely simple. First, check the tank (the sensor may fail or show incorrect values). Second, check the fuel line. Perhaps there was a leak somewhere and it filled with air. The complexity and cost of repairs depends on the nature of the breakdown. Sometimes it is enough to simply replace the hose under the hood.

Fuel may not enter the combustion chamber due to a clogged carburetor or nozzles on injection engines. In addition, it happens that the fuel pump fails. The reasons for this may be different, but the most common of them is overheating of the fuel pump. Of course, we are talking about those cars in which the pump is installed under the hood (usually carburetor). It overheats especially often in the summer heat.
Another option, albeit very rare, is that gasoline has lost its properties (evaporated, diluted with condensate, etc.). This happens if the car has stood for more than a year. In this case, it is enough to add fresh fuel or drain off the residues, then refuel with a suitable fuel.

Problems in the ignition system

No spark on spark plugs or wet plugs. This is also a very common reason why the engine won't start. You can check the candles yourself. To do this, you must have a candle key in the trunk. Checking for a spark is also not difficult.
To do this, you need to unscrew the candle, put the contact wire on it and try to turn the ignition key at the moment when the candle itself is near the metal. A good spark should be “bold” and bright. If the spark is weak or not at all, it is worth taking a closer look at the contacts of the candle. Perhaps they were covered with carbon deposits. In this case, they must be cleaned with sandpaper or a metal brush. If this does not help, then it is worth trying to replace the candle.

It happens that the candle is in order, but still there is no spark. Here you need to check the armored wires and even the ignition coil. By the way, the capacitor on the ignition coil may fail. It is advisable to have a spare one with you (it costs a penny).

No spark on the center wire. You can check this: the central wire is disconnected from the distributor cover, the tip is unscrewed. After that, you need to turn the key and hold the end of the wire near the metal. There should be a good spark.
Ignition lock problem. It so happens that in the lock itself some terminal falls off. Especially on older cars. Naturally, you need to know where to put it again. In addition, the fuses may blow. Therefore, it is always worth having a spare kit in the car. It is inexpensive, does not take up space, and a blown fuse can be not only the reason that, for example, turns do not work. It is worse when, for this reason, the internal combustion engine does not start.

Other possible malfunctions

Problems with the retraction (traction) starter relay. Burnt pennies are the most common problem here (only visible when the device is disassembled).
In addition, contacts can be unsoldered from them. In this case, when the ignition key is turned, only a quiet click of the starter relay will be heard, and the retractor will be silent. If it is working, it will emit an obvious metallic click. On the road, it will hardly be possible to fix it. Although repairs are inexpensive and relatively uncomplicated.

The starter is out of order. If during the start of the car engine, when the key is turned, a click is clearly audible, but the start does not occur, and the battery wires are heating up or even smoke is coming from them, then the starter must be changed.
Incorrectly set ignition. This happens after a motor repair. In this case, you should contact a specialist.

The distributor is flooded with water or just wet. This happens, for example, when driving through large, deep puddles. In this case, the spark will simply leave (pierce) and not get to the candles. The solution is simple: wipe the distributor and let it dry.
The engine may not start because it is jammed. Signs and causes of a wedge is a vast topic that will be difficult to consider in this article. In addition, for various reasons, piston rings, etc. can be completely sealed.

Outcome

So, as follows from all that is written above, it is not so easy to answer the question of why the engine does not start. All reasons can be roughly divided into three main groups:
-problems with fuel supply;
-problems with the electrics;
-problems with mechanics (that is, with the engine itself).

It is recommended not to forget to regularly carry out routine maintenance, additionally check the engine and attachments before a long trip, charge the battery in a timely manner and fill only high-quality fuel into the gas tank.

KIA Rio sensors, like any other modern car, allow the ECU (electronic control unit) to properly prepare the fuel-air overhang, monitor the operation and the state of the engine as a whole. Therefore, any deviation in the sensor operation affects the stability of work, the dynamics of the car, fuel consumption. And sometimes, for example, when the crankshaft position sensor fails, and to the complete inoperability of the engine. Therefore, if the "Check" lamp with the engine image on the dashboard of the car lights up, immediately contact an authorized dealer (if the car is under warranty) or any service station for diagnostics and finding out the error code.

There is a myth among many owners of this car that Rio does not have a temperature sensor and this is due to the fact that owners of trim levels without the SuperVision panel do not see the engine temperature. In fact, it naturally exists and is correctly called - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS).It is located in the engine compartment, how rich the fuel mixture will be depends on its work. It also signals whether the engine is cold or, on the contrary, overheated.

Errors associated with the Kia Rio temperature sensor:

  • P0116 Incorrect engine coolant temperature
  • P0117 Low engine coolant temperature sensor
  • P0118 A high engine coolant temperature sensor
  • P0119 Malfunction of the engine coolant temperature sensor

The resistance of the sensor changes depending on the temperature of the coolant. To check this sensor, remove it, lower it in a container with water of a certain temperature and measure the resistance of the sensor, it should be within the limits indicated in the table on the left.

If not, replace the sensor.

Crankshaft sensor KIA Rio 2012-2013

The crankshaft position sensor (CKPS) is one of the main sensors, on the correct operation of which the performance of the Kia Rio engine depends. If the electrical circuit of this sensor is interrupted or the sensor itself fails, the car simply will not start, since even fuel will not be supplied.

The sensor is located in the block and the gearbox housing. Unlike a temperature sensor, the Kia Rio crankshaft sensor generates alternating current, which indicates to the ECU the position of the crankshaft. it is possible to check the performance of this sensor only with the help of specialized devices, therefore, if you suspect a malfunction, the easiest way is to replace it.

Crankshaft sensor errors:

  • P0385 Crankshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Malfunction
  • P0386 Invalid indicator B crankshaft position sensor
  • P1336 The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is not read
  • P1374 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Frequency Change
  • P0387 Low crankshaft position sensor B
  • P0388 High crankshaft position sensor B
  • P0389 Malfunction of the crankshaft position sensor B
  • P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
  • P0336 Invalid indicator of the crankshaft position sensor A
  • P0337 Low crankshaft position sensor A
  • P0338 A high crankshaft position sensor A
  • P0339 Malfunction of the crankshaft position sensor A

Keep in mind that most errors will be associated with an open circuit of the sensor or its malfunction.

Camshaft sensor Gamma 1.4 / 1.6 Kia Rio

In fact, this is a Hall sensor, its task is to determine the position of the camshaft, it works directly with the CKPS (crankshaft sensor) This sensor is installed on the engine cover, interacts with the camshaft gear.

Diagnostics of malfunctions of the Kia Rio camshaft sensor is carried out only using a special scanner, the purchase of which is not advisable, therefore, we exclude the other causes of breakdown, this sensor is better to replace, since the camshaft sensor cannot be repaired.

  • P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
  • P0341 Wrong indicator / not adjusted camshaft position sensor
  • P0342 Low camshaft position sensor
  • P0343 High camshaft position sensor

Speed sensor

The Kia Rio speed sensor is located strictly vertically on the manual transmission case. Its malfunction does not lead to serious changes in engine operation. However, the vehicle speed will not be displayed on the instrument panel. The speed sensor is not repaired, but only changed. The most common failure is the destruction of the drive gear. This is not scary and does not harm the gearbox itself, the sensor itself just needs to be replaced.

Speed sensor error codes:

  • P0500 Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
  • P0501 Speed sensor not adjusted
  • P0502 Low speed sensor
  • P0503 High or unstable speed sensor

Air flow sensor for Kia Rio

A bit of a wrong concept, since there is no air flow sensor in Rio in its direct sense, but there is an absolute pressure sensor (MAPS) and an intake air temperature sensor (IATS).

Together they perform the role of "mass" or DMRV on domestic cars.

If your car has become unstable to idle, all diagnostic and repair procedures must be started with cleaning the throttle valve.

Throttle control module and idle speed sensor

This module combines several devices, namely:

  1. Damper motor
  2. Idle sensor
  3. Throttle body assembly

An electronic gas pedal can be added directly to this system. As a rule, on cars with low mileage, neither the idle sensor nor the unit as a whole cause problems. However, if symptoms of unstable idling, jerks during acceleration or other troubles appear, the throttle assembly must be cleaned.

Fuel level sensor

We will not write much about the fuel level sensor, it is located directly in the tank. It rarely fails.

Kia Rio cars of the third generation are equipped with the G4FA engine from the new Gamma series (since 2010, these power units have replaced the Alpha series motors), volume of 1394 cm cube, which meets the environmental standards Euro-4. It is produced at the Chinese plant "Beijing Hyundai Motor Co".

Besides Kia Rio-3, this engine is also installed on Kia Ceed, Hyundai "Solaris" (or "Accent"), Hyundai i20, Hyundai i30.

G4FA engine specifications

  • The G4FA engine has 4 cylinders, each with 4 valves.
  • The maximum power is reached at 6300 rpm and is 107-109 horsepower.
  • The engine uses a timing chain with tensioners (during the guaranteed motor resource of 180 thousand km, the chain does not require maintenance).
  • The manufacturer recommends using fuel - AI-92, and engine oil with viscosity parameters - 5W-30 (see "").
  • The engine maintenance interval is 15 thousand km (see "").

7 main disadvantages and malfunctions of the G4FA engine

  1. Engine knocking (most common problem).
If it passes after the engine warms up, then, in 90% of cases, it is caused by the timing chain (you should not worry, this is the norm).
If it does not disappear at engine operating temperature, then it is most likely due to unregulated valves.
  2. Chirping, clatter, clicks, etc. soundsthat are audible when the engine is running.
Do not be afraid of these sounds - this is how fuel injectors work.
  3. The occurrence of uneven engine operation ("Floating" revolutions).
Solved by cleaning the throttle valve. When this does not help, then you should try a fresh "firmware".
  4. Vibrations that appear at idle.
May occur with a dirty throttle valve or spark plugs (see "How to replace the Kia Rio-3 spark plugs"). If vibrations persist after flushing the throttle valve or replacing the spark plugs, pay attention to the engine mounts.
  5. Vibrations when rotating the crankshaft at a frequency of about 3000 rpm.
According to official dealers, the cause of vibrations is the occurrence of resonance between the units and components of the car due to design features. In order for the engine to come out of resonance, it is recommended to sharply depress the accelerator pedal and release it.
  6. Whistling under the hood.
The reason is the weak tension of the alternator belt. After replacing the tensioner roller, the whistle disappears.
  7. The appearance of oil drips from under the valve cover.
Everything is treated with a simple replacement of the gasket.

It should also be noted that due to the lack of hydraulic lifters in the engine, every 95 thousand km, replacement of pushers and adjustment of valve clearances are required. Despite the high cost of the procedure, it should be done without fail, because subsequently, this can lead to significant problems in the operation of the engine: "tripping", noise, burnouts, etc.

The most depressing thing is that the listed malfunctions can appear at the very beginning of car operation. therefore buy a used Kia Rio-3 with such an engine very carefully, and if you take a car with more than 100 thousand km of mileage, you can buy "firewood".

Attention! The cylinder head of the G4FA engine cannot be repaired. bore for repair size is not provided by the manufacturer.

How? Haven't you read it yet? Well, it's in vain ...

If all units and elements of the cooling system are working properly, the normal thermal regime of the engine (coolant temperature 80–100 ° С, the arrow of the coolant temperature indicator is in the white zone of the scale) after warming up is automatically maintained by the thermostat.

Periodically, as well as in the event of a violation of the normal thermal regime of the engine (overheating under normal operating conditions or prolonged warm-up of the engine after starting), it is necessary to check the operation of the thermostat and the electric fan of the cooling system. Check the operation of thermostat 3 (see Fig. Bottom view of the cooling system radiator) can be felt directly on the vehicle. After starting a cold engine with a working thermostat, the outlet (lower) radiator hose 5 begins to heat up when the coolant temperature rises to 80-85 ° C. Earlier or later heating of the radiator outlet hose indicates a thermostat malfunction associated with the valve hanging in open position or jamming in closed position. If the problem cannot be eliminated, the thermostat must be replaced.

If the electric fan 1 does not turn on when the arrow of the coolant temperature indicator reaches the last mark before the red zone of the scale (107 ° C), then this indicates a malfunction of its switch-on sensor 2, relay or the electric fan itself.

For all checks, you must first make sure that the coolant temperature gauge is working properly.

Good afternoon. If you have a dashboard without a temperature display, then at startup a blue lamp should light up, which goes out when it reaches 60 degrees. In principle, it is not necessary to wait for it to go out, it is enough to warm it up for 5-7 minutes. If the set with a scale, as in the photo, then the lower border corresponds to a blue lamp (about 60 degrees), the average is about 90 degrees, the red zone with the letter H, about 120-130 degrees.
Also, the exact temperature of the internal combustion engine can be found out by connecting diagnostic equipment, which takes directly readings from the sensor, or by installing an on-board computer.

    Answer article

Good afternoon, dear owner! As colleagues wrote, it all depends on the configuration of the car, if there is no arrow temperature indication on the dashboard, then you should navigate by the icons. When the blue goes out, it means the engine is warmed up, if the indication of the red icon comes on, then this indicates overheating. In principle, if you monitor the level of antifreeze and the cleanliness of the radiators, there should be no problems. From time to time, once every three to four years, depending on the operation, it is worth washing the radiators, below is a photo of what happens to it during operation.

  • Today, some manufacturers believe that the parameters of the motor, which the driver cannot influence during operation, or which, according to the manufacturer, should not be influenced by him, do not need to be shown to the driver. In your case, the driver is required to stop operating in case of overheating and reduce the intensity of driving in a subcooled state, and in other cases, drive without restrictions. Whichever temperature does not matter, 85 ° or 98 °, you will not notice the difference.

    Hello, dear car owner!
On the Kia Rio, depending on the configuration, two versions of the instrument panel are installed. If you have a car in the basic or in the second configuration, then you can find out the temperature only approximately by the lights on the instrument panel. If you are not satisfied with such temperature readings, you can install an additional on-board computer.

I have a car for 4 years in 4 years, the blue light on the instrument panel did not light up, because it simply does not exist

    Tyumen region, Kia Rio

I have a KIA RIO 11 years old, the bulb you indicated does not suit me because the panel is not mine. I have a red light on the panel, but it only lights up when the engine overheats. The funny thing is that the car service does not know anything about this light bulb
