CONTINUOUS DECEPTION
I'll tell you a shameful secret: we rarely check the ground clearance declared by the manufacturer ourselves. Firms cannot lie at all in this area, and it is pointless to crawl under the rear axle housing to find the insignificant difference between life and paper - it can always be attributed to an error. However, the X1 has an official clearance of 195 mm, like adults. At first glance, it’s somehow hard to believe. Moreover, in this case, it is not difficult to measure it, because it is the same under the entire bottom. And what? It turned out about 180 mm - also quite good for a car without any special off-road ambitions. However, so without ambition? Yes, the front overhang of the "ha-first" is too big, but in addition to quite decent ground clearance and flat, like an athlete's belly, the BMW X1 has a well-tuned permanent all-wheel drive. On the ground, it allows vigorous slipping, but does not allow it to bury itself.

FOOLS LUCKY?
In practice, the off-road part of the test looked like this: we plowed an abandoned quarry, at times hanging on the sandy ridges, but each time sliding off them without assistance. The former cross-country riders quit training and looked at us like we were lucky idiots. In fact, from the outside it was hardly possible to understand why this BMW frolics so impudently outside the asphalt. For us, the most interesting moment was hanging the rear wheel. Realizing that with the front axle steeply lowered down and the stern freely floating in the air, the crossover is unlikely to be able to climb back in reverse, I prepared for a dizzying descent. But still he tried to reverse - and was amazed. As soon as you took your foot off the brake pedal, the German woman climbed the mountain by herself. True, after all our adventures, the lower part of the bumper ate plenty of sand, but there is nothing wrong with that. Now, if we were climbing on hard ground or stones, we would have to look both ways.

LET GO THE LARK, DRIVER
Of course, the Bavarians are traditionally strong on asphalt. But the latest generation X5, as well as the newfangled X6 ("dream car" according to the version of numerous, but mostly never driven by Runet users) have an unpleasant feature. I'm talking about the manner of transferring all the rut, all the bumps to the steering wheel. It is understood that such a regrinding is the downside of controllability. But I still remember old BMWs, whose sensitive steering for some reason did not overload the driver with unnecessary information. So, X1 is made in the good old traditions. It is moderately sharp, but does not remind of the song with the words "Hold on to the steering wheel, driver!" But the suspension - yes, it is typically Bavarian.

THE ROAD OF SMALL CRACKS
All the minor irregularities, all the cracks were ours, as if they had forgotten to put the springs in the suspension. At speeds prohibited by traffic rules in the region of 160-180 kilometers per hour, it became clear that a seemingly smooth track entirely consists of small cracks. But on the other hand, the car passes large irregularities nobly. So much so that there is a temptation not to slow down at all on the speed bumps. Probably, such settings are ideal for Europe. And here - well, here you can get used to it in a couple of days. Overall, the handling is delicious, with a rear-wheel drive accent. It is even better than that of the BMW X3 - naturally, the center of gravity is lower. Of course, if you drive on a sports track - and we did this too - you feel like a computer forcibly drags the car onto an ideal trajectory. A driver who thinks he is a pro will be annoyed. The electronic stabilization system is very advanced and every time stifles the driver's ardor in a new way, taking into account the nuances of the situation. Well, you can turn it off. But note - it works adequately and in real life it will probably save at least one body. Especially when you consider that on the version we tested, the engine was powerful, shamelessly provoking an aggressive ride.

ALWAYS READY
The diesel engine on the BMW X1 23d is fantastic. Its working volume, despite the nameplate, is only 1995 cm3, but the Bavarians managed to remove from them 204 "horses" and 400 Nm of torque. Moreover, the peak value of thrust falls at 2,000 rpm - just in the mode in which the engine works during movement most of the time. That is, the maximum Newton meters are always under your feet. Very comfortable, especially in the city. Can 23d be criticized? Please: when idling, you can hear that there is a diesel engine under the hood. Some more modest brands have already learned to make quieter engines with compression ignition. It is a pity that they are far from the Bavarians in terms of performance. And in general - I personally like the voice of a diesel engine. And I also really liked that the average fuel consumption according to our measurements did not go beyond 7.5 liters per hundred. This, by the way, takes into account the speeds on the track, races on the track, traffic jams and off-roading.

LEFT ORDER
One of the reasons for the love of the brand that BMW gives its fans is, of course, the ergonomics of the cockpit. A seat that takes you tightly, a plump small steering wheel, clearly readable instruments, a sporty fit and, despite it, excellent visibility, all this is fully present in the X1. The leather of the seats is good, the plastic panels are soft, the driver and front passenger are spacious. Everything seems to be perfect. But what disturbs German order? Oh, yes, this is my left leg, soiled on the inside. Yes, the rapids are wide, and the landing is low, and the owners of "ha-first" will have to remember this. There is one more constructive moment: the passenger will be cramped behind a tall driver. Yes, I see that a good part of the overall length has been eaten by the hood, which allows to fit, among other things, an in-line gasoline "six". I understand that this model is not for those who have one car in their family. But the fact remains. By the way, for me, it was generally worth making the X1 a three-door. It would be more honest, and most importantly - much cooler.

The famous German automaker has released the new BMW X1 2016-2017 model year. The international presentation of the crossover will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the fall of 2015. The company representatives report that the start of sales of the new BMW X1 in Europe will take place in October this year.

But the new BMW X1 2 in Russia will be available only towards the end of this or early next year. According to preliminary data, the price of the 2nd generation BMW X1 in the European market will reach 28 thousand euros. The assembly of the SUV will be carried out at an auto plant in Regensburg (Germany).

The new BMW X1 2016-2017 with the body index F48 received a new UKL platform with front axle drive. Recall that the predecessor was built on the chassis of the BMW 3-Series Touring. But at the heart of the novelty is the platform that was used to develop the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. The new Mini version is built on the same cart. True, the manufacturer did not abandon the all-wheel drive version of xDrive, which will also be sold.

Appearance, dimensions and ground clearance

The use of a different platform resulted in the length and wheelbase of the second generation BMW X1 being shortened. At the same time, the height and width were increased. This is how the overall dimensions of the BMW X1 2016-2017 look like:

  • wheelbase - 2 670 mm.

Headlights that have received LED DRLs in the form of rings also look beautiful (fully LED optics are optionally offered).

The car can be equipped with wheel rims with a diameter of 17 to 19 inches. A fairly large optics with LED filling is installed at the back. The bumper in the rear of the body was also made quite massive, which gives the car's appearance additional solidity. The company offers 12 different body colors for the new BMW X1, 10 of which have a metallic effect.

Interior decoration and equipment

Although the length of the crossover body has decreased, it has become more comfortable inside. The front seats are located at a higher height (+36 mm), and in the rear row, a similar increase was as much as 64 mm, compared to the previous generation model.

It also reported that the amount of legroom for the rear passengers has increased by 37 mm. If you order a more expensive second row (for a surcharge), this figure can reach 66 mm, since this sofa can move in the longitudinal direction by 130 mm. The trunk volume of the BMW X1 in the normal position of the second row backs is 505 liters, but if they are folded, the figure increases to 1,550 liters. For a surcharge, the Germans offer an electric drive for the fifth door. You can also order a similar rear backrest folding system.

Talking about the quality of materials used in interior decoration is simply meaningless. The designers also did a great job. The ergonomics of the driver's seat and the thoughtful execution of even the smallest details are impressive. Everything here reminds us that the BMW X1 is a premium crossover.

The salon equipment is quite rich. So, already in the initial configuration of the new 2018-2019 BMW X1, air conditioning, a rain sensor, a proprietary iDrive system with a 6.5-inch display, and fabric upholstery are available. For a surcharge, the manufacturer offers a multimedia system display with a dimension of 8.8 inches, climate control with division into zones, front electric seats, a rearview camera, leather upholstery, a projection screen, rear parking sensors, parking assistant, adaptive cruise control and many other interesting systems.




Engines, suspension and fuel consumption of the BMW X1

Technical characteristics of the 2018-2019 BMW X1 model year assume the use of front-wheel drive. A version with a plug-in drive on both axles is also available (an electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch is used, which, if necessary, transmits up to 100% of the torque to the rear axle).

In the front of the car there is a suspension based on MacPherson struts, and a multi-link with shock absorbers and springs located separately works at the rear. The developers decided to equip the car with steel and aluminum suspension arms.

It is noteworthy that the use of a front-wheel drive chassis did not prevent German specialists from achieving optimal weight distribution between the front and rear axles, this figure is 50:50. Also, engineers inform about the excellent body rigidity and low center of gravity of the BMW X1 2nd generation.

The new BMW X1 will be sold with a pair of gasoline and three diesel engines immediately after entering the market. All of them have four cylinders, and their displacement is 2.0 liters. These power units are combined with a 6-speed "stick" and an 8-band Steptronic automatic transmission.

Gasoline modifications of the BMW X1:

  • sDrive20i - 192 "horses", 280 Nm of torque, acceleration to a hundred lasts 7.7 seconds, and fuel consumption in the combined cycle - 5.9 liters per hundred;
  • xDrive20i - 192 forces and 280 Nm of traction, acceleration to 100 km / h is 7.4 seconds, fuel consumption is about 6.4 liters;
  • xDrive25i - 231 hp, maximum thrust of 350 Nm, acceleration from zero to hundred in 6.5 seconds, and gasoline consumption - at least 6.5 liters in the combined cycle.

Diesel BMW X1 2016-2017:

  • sDrive18d - 150 "horses", 330 Nm of thrust, acceleration to hundreds in 9.2 seconds, declared fuel consumption - 4.1 liters per hundred;
  • xDrive20d - 190 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque at peak, acceleration to 100 km / h in 7.6 seconds, and consumption - from 4.6 liters on the combined cycle;
  • xDrive25d - 231 power and 450 Nm of thrust, accelerates to the first hundred in 6.6 seconds, consumes about 5.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers.

Over time, the company will also offer modifications with diesel and gasoline power units of 1.5 liters with three cylinders. The power of the gasoline BMW X1 sDrive16d will be 116 forces, while the diesel BMW X1 sDrive18i will develop 136 "horses". Both engines will be combined with 6-speed "mechanics" and an automatic transmission Steptronic.

Design

The exterior underwent a slight redesign in 2014 and was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. The car has a new design of wheels, and design details have changed slightly, but at the same time it has not lost its style and dynamics. The general outlines of the body make it a real master on the road, but its dimensions are clearly inferior to other similar brothers.


The muzzle is equipped with a large bumper and is decorated with a branded false radiator grill, which is probably the most recognizable in the auto world. Head optics - well-known angel eyes - attracts a lot of attention. There are also air intakes with chrome trim on the top. Optics can be fully LED, but only for an additional fee.

Looking at the model in profile, you can see quite wide doors, large arches in which there are 17 discs, but at the same time larger ones can fit. The car in profile looks really like a premium model, the dimensions spoil everything. The rear is equipped with optional LED optics, stylish bumper lines and a convenient tailgate.

The oldest gasoline engine with a capacity of 245 hp. fuel consumption is also small - 7.8 liters. People prefer 150 hp, because such an engine is more reliable and easier to maintain. It is especially recommended for rough city driving.

Diesel engines have an average fuel consumption of 5.5-5.9 liters, which makes them quite economical. They are not recommended for use because they are very noisy, and due to the low noise insulation in the car, the noise turns into hum. At idle, such a rumble is emitted stronger than at speed.

All gasoline engines are mostly four-wheel drive, with the exception of the youngest unit, which is used in rear-wheel drive cars.

The five-seater cabin is quite spacious with the compact size of the crossover itself. In the initial configuration, the interior does not look very well equipped. Only after spending a lot of money, the car interior takes on the look familiar for BMW, but the interior of the car has no strong flaws.

The interior is decorated quite well inside, with a touch of sporty style. This design will undoubtedly appeal to young motorists. Everything is done comfortably and comfortably: the seats are soft, the instruments on the panel are easy to read. Driving is also easy, thanks to the smooth rotation of the steering wheel. A disadvantage in the interior is called a small glove compartment and a small number of niches for small change.


The model received new seats, they now hint a little at the small sports capabilities of the car with their lateral support. At the same time, the driver and the front passenger have enough space. The back row has become more spacious compared to the previous generation, it can easily accommodate 3 people and at the same time feel comfortable. There are 2 speakers in the rear doors, one of them is the so-called "buzzer". Passengers have air vents and a 12V socket.


The trunk of the car is quite spacious, its volume is more than 500 liters, and if you fold the rear row, then the volume can be increased to 1,500 liters, while unfortunately the floor will not be even.

In terms of cross-country ability, high ground clearance in our harsh conditions is good, but at high speeds on the track and in corners, there is a serious buildup and additional body roll.

Any car manufacturer, when designing a suspension and choosing a clearance value, is looking for a middle ground between handling and cross-country ability. Perhaps the easiest, safest and most unpretentious way to increase clearance is to install wheels with “high” tires. Changing wheels makes it easy to increase the ground clearance by another centimeter. Do not forget that the first generation X1 had rear-wheel drive as the main one, and the front end was connected when necessary. The second generation got the opposite situation. Now the front wheels are driving, and the rear wheels are connected in off-road mode. In this regard, the structural part of the chassis and suspension has changed significantly.
