Oil in Discovery 4 diesel which is better. What oil is recommended to fill in Land Rover

The automatic transmission and the engine are those components of the Land Rover Discovery 4 car, the timely oil change in which is a guarantee not only of the trouble-free operation of these units, but also the ability to operate the car at the maximum of its capabilities.

The LRservice technical center offers oil change services in the Discovery 4 automatic transmission, as well as in the engine of this model.

Which oil should you prefer?

Automatic transmission Land Rover Discovery 4 requires oil change every 100-120 thousand km mileage. The technical center LRservice will offer you the most popular types of oils for automatic transmissions:

  • ZF Lifeguard 6 or -8
  • VAG G 060 162 A2
  • Dexron VI

or their domestic counterparts. Oil for Land Rover Discovery 4 may not be cheap, but you can save on its purchase if you contact LRservice.

Signs of the need to change the oil in the automatic transmission

In order not to damage the expensive unit, the oil in the automatic transmission Discovery 4 must be changed at least once every 120 thousand km. By this time, the oil already noticeably changes its properties under the influence of the following circumstances:

  • The quality of the road surface.
  • Traffic (the more traffic jams, the more often you need to change the oil).
  • Gasoline quality.
  • Riding style.

If the operating conditions of the "box" are far from ideal, please contact our technical service. LRservice managers will be happy to tell you which oil in the automatic transmission of your Land Rover Discovery 4 is better to fill and change the oil at a convenient time for you.

Engine oil

The engine of the Discovery model is quite reliable, but it does not tolerate operation with old oil or with a small amount of it: parts of a powerful unit need constant high-quality lubrication. In the technical center LRservice you will be offered a wide range of engine oils for Land Rover Discovery of the 4th generation, from which you can choose the optimal price-quality ratio.

It is recommended to completely change the oil in the Land Rover Discovery 4 engine at least every 10-12 thousand km. This operation can be carried out at home, however, an overpass, a lift or a viewing hole, as well as an assistant, are needed. We recommend that you contact LRservice: our prices are available to every car owner.

Owners of Land Rovers with a diesel engine should be especially careful when selecting oil. The specialists of the LRservice technical center have extensive experience in changing oil on Discovery 4 with a diesel engine and are ready not only to fill the car with a new lubricant, but also to diagnose the operability of the main engine systems along the way.

By regularly changing the oil at the LRservice technical center, you can be sure that you are supplying the automatic transmission and engine with high-quality lubricants from leading European manufacturers. And you can choose oil for your Discovery 4 from several dozen similar items for every taste and wallet.

Discovery 4 oil should be changed every 13 thousand kilometers or once a year. This is especially true when operating a car in the urban cycle, when you have to stand idle in traffic jams or at traffic lights with the engine running for a long time. In this case, the number of engine hours of engine operation significantly exceeds its mileage. In automatic transmissions, it is recommended to change the oil every 100,000 km.

Violation of the timing of oil change in Land Rover Discovery 4 is fraught with serious consequences and is a sure way to overhaul or even complete replacement of the gearbox and engine.

Stages of work

To properly change the oil in Land Rover Discovery 4, it is best to contact a specialized RoverLand service center, which employs real professionals.

In order to replace the lubricant in the internal combustion engine, you must:

  • remove the central part of the engine crankcase;
  • drain the old lubricating fluid through the drain hole in the crankcase;
  • remove the oil filter;
  • collect everything in reverse order;
  • fill in new grease.

To replace the lubricant in the automatic transmission, it must be fully warmed up to the operating temperature. Waste oil is removed through the drain hole. It also requires the installation of a new pallet with a built-in filter.

What are the volumes of grease

The Discovery 4 transmission has a capacity of approximately 10 liters, but a change will require approximately 6 liters.

Engine oil volume:

  • 2.7 TD (276DT) - 5.5 L;
  • 3.0 SDV6 (30DDTX) - 5.9 L;
  • 3.0 TD (306DT) - 5.9 L;
  • 5.0 V8 (508PN) - 8 HP

Land Rover Discovery is a British-designed mid-size SUV, launched in 1989. The car is one of Land Rover's most popular flagship models, alongside the premium and more expensive Range Rover. Today, the fifth generation of Land Rover Discovery is being produced. The modern model uses a new design concept, innovative technologies and high-tech motors. So, the engine range of the fifth "Discovery" is represented by two powerful engines - a 3.0 liter gasoline engine (340 hp), as well as a 3-liter diesel engine with 249 horsepower.

The Discovery story began in 1989, when the very first SUV was introduced. The car received a gasoline range of engines, consisting of engines of 2.0 (136 HP), 3.5 (152 HP) and 3.9 liters (182 HP). A diesel 2.5-liter version with 107 hp was also available. with., also available in a 113-strong version (since 1995).

In the mid-1990s, Land Rover significantly increased the production of its cars. So, in 1995, the total volume for the first time exceeded 100 thousand pieces. Discovery turned out to be the best-selling of all Land Rovers.

The second generation model has not undergone significant changes compared to its predecessor. In 2004, sales of the third generation of Discovery began, which retained the proportions of the old models, but at the same time had more presentable and impressive forms. The SUV was equipped with petrol internal combustion engines of 4.0 and 4.4 liters, with a capacity of 219 and 300 "horses", respectively. A 190-horsepower 2.7-liter diesel was also offered. The third generation model was also content with the unique Terrain Response system, which adapted the car to the characteristics of the road surface.

In 2005, sales of the trial version of the Discovery 4 began, which had the factory designation Concept 802. In fact, it was an unsuccessful development, with the exception of the cool design (it was then used in subsequent versions of Range Rover). This version was only offered with a 2.7-liter diesel engine.

The fourth generation car was "brought to mind" only in the late 2000s. The car debuted in 2009 and received a whole range of innovative technologies that were aimed at improving fuel efficiency, increasing power and reducing harmful emissions. The top-end development was a three-liter diesel engine with two turbochargers. Its torque reached 600 N / m.

In the spring of 2010, Castrol organized a "Castrol Challenge Day" on the grounds of the Land Rover Experence School in the Moscow Region. Where new types of oils for the car were presented

After the introductory part, everyone who wished to attend the event was able to go to the practical part - the “main one” - to test their “favorites” off-road, namely to get a course of off-road driving. And at the end of the meeting, Castrol organized a competition. As it turned out, there were many who wanted, but no one was left without attention and a consolation prize.

For information. More recently, at the beginning of the 21st century, the Land Rover company signed a partnership with Castrol. And she began to develop oils specifically for Land Rover engines. And today you can already see on the labels of plastic containers of oils "Designed for Land Rover", and on the very neck of the engine oil cover the inscription "Castrol"

The diesel engine lubrication system 3.0 TD Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport consists of the following elements: an intake camshaft; exhaust camshaft; turbocharger supply oil line; main turbocharger; crankshaft and connecting rods; oil level and temperature sensor; oil pan; oil pump; oil cooler and filter assembly; piston cooling nozzles and auxiliary turbocharger (fig. 12).

Oil is drawn from the sump of the 3.0 TD Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport diesel engines and is pumped by an oil pump. At the outlet of the oil pump, the oil is filtered and distributed through the internal oil passages.

All moving parts are pressure or spray lubricated. Pressurized oil is also supplied to operate the hydraulic governors and timing chain tensioners for the 3.0 TD diesel engine Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

The oil pump of the 3.0 TD Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport diesel engine (Fig. 13) is driven by a gear mounted on the front end of the crankshaft of the 3.0 TD Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport diesel engines. It draws oil from the oil sump of a Land Rover 3.0 TD diesel engine through the intake manifold. The oil is cooled by a water heat exchanger and filtered by a replaceable paper filter. Cooled oil is distributed to the engine and bearings and drained back into the sump of the Land Rover 3.0 TD diesel engine.

The Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport 3.0 TD diesel oil sump design ensures reliable oil delivery over all bumps and slopes. The Land Rover 3.0 TD diesel engine's oil drainage system is designed to ensure excellent oil flow through the turbochargers during severe lateral tilting. The oil pump supplies oil to the turbocharger bearings of the 3.0 TD diesel engine Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport from the primary reservoir (oil pan). From the turbocharger bearings, the oil flows into the secondary reservoir. The Land Rover 3.0 TD diesel engine vacuum pump pumps oil from the turbocharger bearings to the secondary reservoir, from where it is pumped back to the primary reservoir (oil pan) (Figure 14).

Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport 3.0 TD diesel engine oil level should be checked weekly with the engine hot, with the vehicle on level ground. In this case, turn off the 3.0 TD Land Rover diesel engine (Land Rover) and wait 10 minutes to allow the oil to drain into the oil pan.

The oil level can be viewed with the ignition on, without starting the engine and with the transmission in the P (Park) position. The system will display readings only after the oil level has stabilized (fig. 15).

The oil level of the 3TD Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport diesel engine is displayed on the gauge. Messages are displayed to the right of the pointer that recommend action.

If the oil level is within the normal range, the message "Level OK" will be displayed. There is no need to add oil.
