The third generation was released in 2012, as for the changes, they are very serious, the car began to look modern and very aggressive. The model received body kits, which are usually installed by our auto tuning fans, of course not exactly the same, but approximately similar.

The interior of the model has been changed, its technical part has also been improved. Production and sales are still ongoing, but the manufacturer's company claims that another generation will be released soon.


Appearance

The manufacturer has improved the design, making it more aggressive and, thanks to the aggression, the model attracts the attention of other motorists and people around. But the details of the regular version remain, that is, it is the regular version with a sports body kit.

The front end has beautiful lenticular optics with LED daytime running lights. Between the headlights is a small chrome grille, which has embossed edges along the edges that extend from the hood. The massive aerodynamic bumper has a large grille in the middle and two air intakes with chrome inserts along the edges. The muzzle really turned out to be successful.


The side of the Opel Astra OPS attracts with large wheel arches, which are slightly swollen. The aerodynamic elements of the car are also attracted, in particular the line that goes from the door opening handle to the taillight. Also, the model pleased with excellent handling, it behaves well in corners and at the same time it is relatively comfortable and therefore it can be used as the main city car.

The chairs themselves, as you already understood, are sports, they are comfortable to be in and, in principle, there is enough space, by the way they are equipped with heating and mechanical adjustments. The back row is designed for 3 people, but even the second row will not be very comfortable there.


The driver's seat has the same steering wheel as the regular version, it is 3-spoke, large enough and has multimedia controls. The dashboard is equipped with analog sensors, which are placed in wells, between them there is a small, uninformative on-board computer.


The central console of the Opel Astra OPS has a small display of the multimedia system, there is no navigation, but it may appear for an additional amount. Below there is just a huge number of buttons with which the multimedia is controlled. This is what distinguishes Opel, a large number of buttons on the center console. Further, we can also observe a large number of keys, but they are intended for setting the climate control. Even lower is a niche for small items and a cigarette lighter.

The tunnel has a gearshift selector, a niche for small items, a cup holder and an electronic parking brake button. There is also an impressive armrest. There is a good trunk here, its volume is 380 liters, and if you fold the rear row, you can get as much as 1165 liters.

The car is offered to the buyer in only one configuration, but there are additional options. At least the buyer will have to pay for the model 1 160 000 rubles and this is what the car will have:

Salon Opel Astra J OPS differs from the GTC version by the presence of sports front seats, a different dashboard, as well as a leather-covered steering wheel with a flattened rim in its lower part. European sales of new items will begin only next summer, prices have not yet been announced. In the UK, the vehicle will be marketed as the Vauxhall Astra VXR.

If you are not interested in the rich performance, packages and individual options, and consider the "Astra GTC" as a "hot" hatchback, this is quite a bit for future achievements on track days. A 1.6-liter turbo engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission guarantees good dynamics (acceleration to hundreds in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 220 km / h), and the chassis promises decent handling.

If we stuff the GTC with options like our test car, then it comes close to the price of the most powerful Astra OPC in the standard version. The OPC is one of the fastest hot hatches ever, with a 2.0-liter turbo engine producing 280 hp. accelerates the car to 250 km / h and allows you to dial the first hundred in 6 seconds! In the running gear, stiffer springs and stabilizers are used, electronically controlled FlexRide struts fight against vibrations, slip is minimized by a limited slip differential, and the car is stopped by Brembo brakes.

The differences in the salons are not so striking. Both the GTC and OPC have a stylish front fascia with a scattering of buttons, leather-trimmed doors and seats. But the seats themselves are different: the "lighter" has "Recaro" buckets, and they are located 17 mm lower. The rest of its differences are more decorative than functional: the steering wheel with the OPC logo is 1 cm smaller in diameter and slightly beveled at the bottom, the gear lever has a proprietary knob, and metal pads on the pedals.

ON A CITIZEN

At first, the GTC is perceived as a purely civilian car. The fit is comfortable, the body is well fixed, the controls are in place. One or two complaints and missed: the long-armed ones can get a bruise on the armrest when the even gears are turned on, and the short-legged ones will get tired of the long-travel clutch and the high-raised front edge of the pillow.

The engine seems insipid. "Astra GTC" rides exactly throughout the entire rev range: linear thrust is accompanied by a quiet dull accompaniment of exhaust. It seems that you are standing still, and you look at the speedometer - bah, we are already overclocked to the deprivation of rights! Good isolation contributes to the detachment - both from vibration and from noise. The clatter of studded tires and the hum of the tread, of course, penetrate the interior, but muffled. And most of the irregularities do not reach with jabs, but with sounds: alas, the "talkativeness" of the FlexRide stands is familiar to many owners of "asters".

The three-door holds a straight line confidently, during acceleration it does not scour even on undulating asphalt - thanks to the HiPerStrut front suspension. But sometimes the steering is puzzling: the feeling of a clear "zero" disappears, with a deviation of several degrees the steering wheel becomes uninformative. It becomes difficult to drive even in your own lane: it is impossible to feel a slight deviation by effort. Features of electric amplifier calibrations?

At the gas station on the way to the "Smolenskoe ring" we change cars. Getting behind the wheel of the OPC version is more difficult - landing is hampered by a 10 mm reduced ground clearance and developed support for low-set seats. Why is the chair so spacious? Don't panic: the cushion and backrest bolsters can be adjusted electrically. However, even I, the owner of an average build, would like a closer "hug" - but not now, but later, at the circuit.

In the meantime, "Astra OPC" awakens from sleep with a displeased roar. The pedal effort is higher here, but not excessive. At the first braking, a dive follows: from a light touch of the pedal, the hot hatch stands rooted to the spot. Otherwise, everything is familiar from GTC, only the description of each parameter requires the word "a little": a little clearer than the gearbox switching, a little more noise and vibrations, a little more accurate feedback. But not overclocking - with an extra hundred "horses" "Astra OPC" under the groan and hiss rushes like mad, just have time to change short gears.

RING OF DISTRESS

The morning before the test, the hot hatch was left standing on a tragus without wheels. No, no, they were not stolen (by the way, the cost of four tires, complete with disks, is comparable to the six months' income of an average city dweller in the vicinity of the Smolensk Ring). We hardly found a tire fitting, where we agreed to change the wheels into summer tires (for measurements), and tested both cars on the same set. This is permissible: for the Astra GTC, 20-inch wheels are offered as an option. But castling will not work: the calipers of the powerful OPC brakes stand by surprise between the spokes of the 18-inch disc from GTC!

A yellow hatchback, resting on steep wheels, sets off to storm the corners of the circuit. A harmonious, obedient and predictable car: in Sport mode, the mechatronic chassis responds to the gas in a timely manner, obediently follows a "clean" steering wheel, rolls as expected and smoothly passes curbs. The handling is good: a slight drift when going over the speed at the entrance to the bend is immediately replaced by the steering of the rear axle, which turns into the predicted skid.

A teaspoon of tar is brought in by the brakes: at the autodrome, the drive is perceived as wadded, and after several fast laps, the reliability of deceleration decreases. Perhaps the adhesion properties of Pirelli-P Zero tires of size 245 / 35R20 exceed those of the brakes! But overall, the result is decent: the best lap was completed in 1 minute 55.9 seconds. This, for comparison, is even better than the time of the 240-horsepower "Seat-Leon Cupra" and only half a second worse than the result of the "Ford-Mustang" forced up to 700 "horses"!

What about Astra OPC? A completely different car. Acceleration is evil, but not the same as that of the car of the same name of the last generation, which impressed with the explosion of traction. Here, it just smoothly, with a wave, turns from sufficient into a freaky one, forcing to wield the lever faster: it makes no sense to raise the speed above six thousand. The box can only be clearer.

And what to wish for controllability? Refinement, or something. Although this is a matter of taste. The younger version can be played this way and that, and "Astra OPC" does not understand the hints: no matter how you provoke it with the steering wheel and gas, it does not go into a skid. And dictates different trajectories than most hot hatches we've tested. But once you find an approach, OPC will give you a thrill with its straightforwardness.

In a profiled arc in front of the start line, you can not be afraid of an insidious sliding of the tailgate, in a sharp turn "Behind the wheel", with which it ends, you can open early. If the "Astra GTC" there limply slipped with its inner wheel and slid outward, then the OPC version is kept by the limited slip differential on the track. Amazing: you turn on the gas, and the car, instead of going to the curb with powerful acceleration, goes along the very edge of the asphalt road! And so - round and round.

"Have you lost your brakes?" - asked the videographer after a series of measurements. We were surprised: there were no comments to them at all. You press on a tight pedal - and every time you hang properly on the belts. Then we were shown a video: with crimson glowing discs, with fireworks from burning pads, Astra OPC falls to the asphalt under hard braking ... And even after such overloads on the way back there was no beating of warped discs, no squeak of worn pads.

And the Opel-Astra OPC became the fastest of a dozen hot hatchbacks that we tested at the Smolensk Ring in 2012: the lap was completed in 1 minute 50 seconds exactly. Whether all this is worth the difference in price between the "hot" GTC and the "hot" OPC - it's up to fans of track days to decide. And from hot hatches from 250 hp. this is, whatever one may say, the most affordable and hot offer.

Oddly enough, it is more interesting in the management of "Astra GTC". Yes, it has a relatively boring engine, the brakes float in extreme modes, and the pedal drive seems to be stuffed with cotton wool - but this is acceptable for a civilian car. But the chassis is with a twinkle: a good balance between oversteer and understeer. Astra OPC, with its straightforwardness, makes you look for unusual trajectories, and if you do not take this feature into account, then you will not be able to correct the direction by gas discharge. But at the exit from the turn, the self-block works fine. And the brakes are beyond praise. The car is fast, but not for everybody.

I liked the Opel-Astra OPC very much - so much so that I am ready to award it one more emotional degree. I was impressed by the effectiveness of the brakes and the overall balance: it allows you to slow down later and bring more speed into a corner. At the output, the self-blocking helps noticeably: where the GTC slips powerlessly, the OPC goes into overclocking. I think this is one of the best hot hatches. And since lap time is primary in RHHCC competitions, he is truly a champion in the "Behind the wheel" table. My combat Seat-Leon Cupra, specially trained for competition, is faster and more responsive to oversteer, but the Astra OPC's straightforwardness was not annoying. I just didn't like the fit - the lateral support rollers, even if brought together, press somewhere in the wrong place, instead of fixing the body. Well, I wish the opel gearboxes more clarity. And "Astra GTC" is a beautiful, good car for everyday driving, it didn’t give bright emotions on the track.

It turns out that not only in Holland there are recognized specialists in the cultivation of ornamental plants. What the Germans have done with their Astra cannot fit into the clear framework of the Opel company. The J body, which was introduced not so long ago, is overgrown with new inflorescences. Several new species of ornamental plants and one wild growing have already appeared in the bouquet of German Asters. This is the Opel Astra OPC, a breeding technology product from the modestly named Opel Performance Center. Frankly, this branch did not appear yesterday, but 10 years ago, in 2008 it was updated, but it was with the new J body in 2016 that the Opel Astra OPC got out of the category of decorative.

But the public expects from Opel not only cups and saved seconds at the Nurburgring. The public also wants to travel, and finally the company presented a civilian version of the Opel Astra OPS, which was refined, claws cut, dressed up and sent to the people. And people will now be able to buy 280 horses under a beautiful hood and a zippered grille for just 1.2 million. Nobody will sell such a herd so cheaply. Is only a Ford Focus in the RS trim for 1.3 million can show 230 horses, although this is still a slightly different car. And the 1.6 million Volkswagen Golf R will have about 300 hp. There is also a difference in trim levels, but first things first.

Opel Astra OPC cannot be confused with a regular Astra even in the dark and even along the profile. Despite the fact that the bodies of the simple and charged Astra are the same, the sports hatchback was hung with fairings as it was the last time. Two powerful exhaust pipes are visible at the rear, and the optional 20-inch alloy wheels hint that the car's suspension and chassis are as good as the exterior. Only with 20-inch rollers on our roads you will not particularly drive. Firstly, the clearance of the car is already microscopic, and secondly, not everyone can change two sets of 20-inch ring rubber every year. It's easier to buy two Kalina. But not all of the 18 discs will be installed either, because the base on the Opel Astra OPC is equipped with two-piston Brembo with 250-mm compound cast-iron-aluminum brake discs. Therefore, a spacer will be needed in order to somehow adapt the wild-growing to civilian conditions of existence.

These are all flowers, but this car has real juicy berries under the hood. 280 forces for a small hatchback, in terms of mass / power ratio, can allow the Opel Astra OPC to be equal if not with sports and specially prepared cars for racing, then with higher classmates. It is second only to the Golf R, but heavier than the Ford Focus ST and Megan RS. The Opel Astra OPC weighs 1475 kg, which in no way prevents it from cracking down on branded rubber. One has only to slip the clutch carelessly and the Michelin Pilot Super Sport starts to smell like its expensive perfume. The clutch, by the way, in the car is configured ambiguously and you need to get used to it. In a sporty harsh pedal, but it was probably done on purpose, so as not to provoke the car to slip and stall.

The motor torque is 400 Nm. This is a mind-boggling number for a small serial hatch, albeit with an OPC prefix. All this beauty is transferred to the front wheels through a true limited slip differential. Real, not electronic emulation, like some. And this says a lot, especially when the Astra enters the turn and under the gas pedal one feels like the baby is being pulled into the inner radius. This is how a real differential should work, and without any steering, only with the gas pedal, the car perfectly goes through long high-speed turns. Peak torque is available at around 4500 rpm, and the operating dynamic range starts at 2000 rpm. In these numerical ratios, the third gear pleased. It is endless. This is bad for the Nurburgring, but good for the city regime. It is not often necessary to juggle the gear knob. And one more bonus for city traffic jams and constant traffic lights. The Opel Astra OPC will help you save a 98 glass a day thanks to the start / stop system, which should be supplied as standard.

Household appliances, trunk and fuel consumption

Sports are sports, but it's time and honor to know. It's not like testing drives around the Nurembergrings all your life. The car must work in harsh living conditions and, according to the owners, the Opel Astra OPC copes well with the duties of a utilitarian vehicle for trips to supermarkets with a purchase volume limit of 380 liters. This is exactly how much is allocated in the body under the trunk, just such a trunk in the civilian version of the car. For some reason, the trunk is especially appreciated by our public, as well as low fuel consumption. There can be problems with this, since a two-liter turbocharged engine requires at least 15 liters in the city, and 9 liters per hundred outside the city. It's not a pity for such a device, especially if you sit in the salon.

Firstly, from the Recaro chair, which comes in the base and is installed 35 mm lower than on the decorative Astra, excellent visibility, while there is the possibility of adjustment in 18 positions, including the adjustment of separate support. Secondly, the console, generously strewn with buttons, gives the impression of a space station, but each of them is in place and their location is quite logical. The scarlet illumination of the tidy is at first confusing, but then it is perceived as a mandatory addition to the harsh suspension. There is a justification for this, since the suspension is far from simple, and the tidy lights up red only when the OPC mode is turned on. But there are two more - the more comfortable FlexRide and Sport. All the details about the state of the road can be found only in the OPC mode, so it can always be turned off in favor of a more comfortable, but less informative ride.
