The principle of separate nutrition is well known among people who want to lose weight, which was developed by the doctor Herbert Sheldon.
Basic principles of the Sheldon diet
Herbert Sheldon is an American hygienist who for many years treated patients with fasting and developed not just a diet, but a whole system based on the principle of separate nutrition.
It is based on the principle of physiological digestion by the body of certain products - for different types food requires different environments and different enzymes to help process and assimilate food. If you combine different foods in one meal that require different conditions for digestion, then the body will find it difficult to figure out what and how to break down, it will not be able to produce a special enzyme for everything that we ate. This leads, firstly, to the fact that not all food is digested, part of it is deposited in the body in the form of harmful substances, which has a detrimental effect on health. Secondly, such a varied food is digested much more slowly, which leads to the formation of body fat. Basic allow the body to quickly and completely digest the product, taking all the most useful from it, which leads to overall health and weight loss.
Sheldon product groups
The creator of the diet divided all foods into several groups and described how he sees. Those of them that can be combined allow you to get more vitamins and nutrients from the joint intake. Those that cannot be combined will be poorly digested and lead to obesity and poor health.
Among these groups:
- Proteins and proteins - meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk and its low-fat derivatives, nuts, beans.
- Starchy and non-starchy foods - vegetables and fruits with high or low starch content.
- Neutral foods such as fats and carbohydrates
Sour foods and sweet fruits and berries are also distinguished separately.
Basic rules for combining products
Since all products are divided into categories, the main principle of the diet is the combination or incompatibility of products from different groups or within a group. So, protein and starchy foods are categorically impossible to combine with each other. This means that, for example, chicken and chips (that is, proteins and starch) cannot be combined in one meal.
Since proteins and fats are poorly combined in one dish, this means that it is better to choose lean meat or poultry. Also, do not mix proteins and fats in different foods, such as fatty sour cream and meat. It is best to combine meat with non-starchy vegetables, which will help remove cholesterol from the body. In addition, when eating meat, you should not drink alcohol, as it inhibits protein digestion.
Plant proteins, such as legumes, are more successfully combined with other foods than animals. They are combined with fats because they are starchy in nature and how proteins are combined with other starches.
Starch itself is a difficult-to-digest product, so high-starch foods such as bread or rice should not be overused. Most importantly, you cannot combine them with animal proteins, that is, meat.
Among other prohibitions on combining - you can't eat carbohydrates or proteins with acidic foods, it's better to eat them separately. Sheldon also identifies three main products that should not be combined with anything at all and consumed strictly separately from everything else. It:
- Melon - contains sugars that will cause other foods to ferment and make them difficult to digest
- Watermelon - for the same reason the presence of natural sugars;
- Milk - getting into the body, curdles from the acid of gastric juice and wraps other products, preventing access to them of the same juice, which slows down the process of their digestion up to decay.
Since there are a lot of options for combining certain products, it is worth preparing and printing a compatibility table, which Sheldon compiled for his diet. Sheldon's diet table looks something like this:
On the basis of Sheldon's principle of separate nutrition, a 90-day diet was developed, which was loved by many, due to the effectiveness and the absence of a ban on many products. On this food system, you can even eat flour and sweets, the main thing is that this must be done on special carbohydrate days. This diet is recommended for those who need to lose a lot of weight. On the one hand, the diet is not difficult to follow, due to the permission of many foods that are forbidden on other diets, on the other hand, the Sheldon diet for 90 days lasts a long time, and not everyone has the patience to follow it.
Pros and cons of the Sheldon diet
Sheldon's diet cannot be called unequivocally the best - on the one hand, it is useful for its scientific approach, because separate nutrition is indeed largely justified by physiological processes. However, it is possible to adhere to this system only after receiving recommendations from a doctor, since there have been cases of complaints from patients who were treated according to his own method by the creator of the diet. Therefore, before going on the Shelton diet, as well as using many other diets, you first need to consult a specialist.
One of the founders of separate nutrition was the American naturopathic nutritionist Herbert Sheldon, who studied issues proper nutrition over 40 years. July 10, 1928 saw the light of his book "The Right Combinations of Food Products", which has since enjoyed immense popularity.
Since 1939, Sheldon opened the School of Health, where vegetarian and separate meals were combined with fasting, which was called "physiological cleansing and rest." Sheldon's main thesis was: "The simpler the dishes, the more efficient the digestion."
Herbert Sheldon's nutritional rules:
- it is necessary to eat meals prepared from a small amount of products. Diversity in food is one of the most important causes of overeating, and this, in turn, makes it difficult for digestion;
- in the afternoon, food intake should be started with fruits and berries eaten raw, but no more than three types;
- a day it is imperative to eat a salad made from raw vegetables at least once, but no more than four types;
- you need to eat as many nuts as possible, ensuring the satisfaction of the human body in protein and capable of replacing animal products (meat, fish, milk and dairy products, eggs);
- you need to minimize the amount of fats consumed in food;
- all products should be cooked for a minimum time;
- it is completely necessary to abandon cereals, and cereals can be consumed in small quantities in milky-wax ripeness in combination with a large amount of fruits and vegetables;
- the diet should completely exclude sugar, industrial products, salt, spices, spices, seasonings, canned food, etc.;
- you can drink only plain clean water;
- it is imperative to follow the diet - the main meal should be in the evening, and in the morning and afternoon the diet should be light and small.
Another thesis of Sheldon's proper nutrition is “different food in different meals,” that is, Sheldon's nutrition should be separate. The basis of this thesis was the nutritionist's assumption that digestion different types products require different digestive juices, therefore, being in the stomach at the same time, proteins, fats and carbohydrates are less assimilated, since a neutralization reaction takes place between acid and alkaline enzymes. Sheldon believed that proteins and carbohydrates were the worst combined, so foods such as milk porridge, sandwiches, yoghurts with fruit fillings should be completely excluded from the diet.
It should be borne in mind that Sheldon developed his rules at the beginning of the 20th century, when scientists did not know the exact composition of most food products, so today nutritionists consider Sheldon's theory controversial, despite that, it continues to be very popular. Its modern proponents have only slightly modified the food pairing rules, however.
Separate food rules according to Sheldon
- incompatible types of products cannot be consumed at one time:
1) proteins and carbohydrates;
2) several concentrated proteins (for example, meat and fish);
3) fats and proteins;
4) sour fruits and vegetables and proteins;
5) acidic fruits and vegetables with carbohydrates;
6) carbohydrates with carbohydrates;
7) sugars and carbohydrates;
- melon and watermelon should always be consumed separately;
- it is better not to eat milk or drink it separately.
Based on these rules, a food compatibility table was developed, in accordance with which a diet is drawn up:
- protein products can be combined with green vegetables;
- milk can be consumed simultaneously only with sour fruits;
- green vegetables can be combined with proteins, fats, starchy foods;
- with green vegetables, you can use all legumes with the exception of legumes;

Separate meals according to Shelton
Herbert Shelton - nutritionist, who became known all over the world, due to the fact that he was the first to offer separate nutrition, explained the essence of his nutrition method. This American nutritionist was the founder of the idea of separate nutrition, and also offered the world the idea of "simple" food... The essence of "simple" nutrition is that a person is recommended to eat as simple monotonous food as possible, which does not require long and complex preparation. He believed that the simpler the food, the faster and easier it is absorbed by the body.
The first book by a nutritionist was published in the twenties of the last century. It was called "The Right Food Combination"... In his opinion, all products can be conditionally divided into groups that are combined and not combined with each other. He advised to eat some products together, and said that it would not only not harm the body, but would also benefit it. I strongly recommended other products there is separately, and do not mix with products from other groups. Herbert Shelton believed that certain vitamins and minerals were absorbed better when combined with certain types of foods. His main recommendation was that never do not combine more than 2-3 types of food at one meal.
10 principles of separate feeding
1 Shelton emphasized that any product from our diet can be conditionally attributed to one or another group. He highlighted the following product groups:
- protein products (low-fat dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, mushrooms, legumes, nuts, etc.);
- fatty foods (different types of butter, fatty dairy products, cheese, etc.);
- carbohydrate products (cereals, sugar, sweets, bread, potatoes, etc.).
2 He divided vegetables and fruits into several groups:
- starchy vegetables (potatoes, Jerusalem artichoke, pumpkin, corn, beets, etc.);
- non-starchy vegetables (green vegetables, cabbage, peppers, zucchini, cucumber, etc.);
- sour vegetables (such as tomato);
- berries and fruits are sweet and savory.
3 Some foods, in the opinion of a nutritionist, are not included in any of the above groups, and should be used only as independent meals. That is, these products cannot be combined with any other products at all. These products include watermelon, melon, milk.
4 In addition to isolating product groups, strict bans on the combination of certain types of products have been developed. For example, a nutritionist is strictly prohibits combining starchy dishes with protein... But an unenlightened person, as a rule, combines products in this way. How often such an unacceptable combination is prepared, such as mashed potatoes with fried chicken, or rice with fish, or creamy ice cream with nuts and chocolate, or oatmeal with milk and banana. But it is this combination that is considered the most harmful to the body and is incredible hard to digest.
5 Meat, fish products should be with a minimum fat content. The fat on the meat, or the skin on the poultry parts, must be removed before cooking. It is advisable to choose when buying dietary lean meat... This rule should be adhered to due to the fact that proteins are poorly combined with fats, and are less absorbed in tandem with fatty foods.
7 Animal squirrels cannot be combined with alcoholic beverages, since alcohol suppresses the action of an enzyme necessary for the digestion of animal protein. Therefore, if you are used to dining with a piece of meat with a glass of red wine, then you will have to forget about it.
8 The dietitian advises to completely abandon sweets and confectionery, as well as the addition of sugar. Sweets are absorbed too quickly, poorly saturate a person, cause a second attack of hunger after a short period of time. Also sugars cause fermentation in the intestines... Sugar can be replaced with natural honey, which is absorbed much slower than sugar and brings much more benefits to the human body.
9 Milk, watermelon and melon, as mentioned above, cannot be combined with other foods. Watermelons and melons are oversaturated with sugars, therefore, entering the body along with other foods, cause active fermentation... Milk, under the influence of the acidic environment of gastric juice, curdles and is digested. If other foods are present in the stomach, then digestion slows down significantly, the food begins to deteriorate and poison the body with toxins.

Fasting for weight loss
In addition to the principles of separate feeding, Shelton was sure that periodic hunger strikes... He claimed that hunger strikes good for the body, they unload internal organs and systems, cleanse the body of accumulated toxins. In his opinion, in order to start fasting, one does not need to somehow prepare the body. During fasting, only drink is allowed. Do not drink more than your body requires, always listen to your body!
During fasting, he recommends to patients refrain from strenuous physical activity, reduce water procedures, tune the body to complete rest and recuperation. For Shelton's conviction of the need for fasting, his weight loss system has been and is under great criticism. Despite this, many have used and still use this weight loss system to this day. In the next article, you will learn an example of a separate food menu, practical advice on separate food.
Separate food. Product Compatibility Chart:
The essence of product compatibility is that, ideally, a person must consume one product at one meal... Then all useful substances will be absorbed as much as possible. Sheldon's Separate Meal Diet
According to Shelton's theory of food segregation, naturopaths classified food into groups:
- Proteins: meat, fish, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, nuts, mushrooms, beans, beans, dry peas, eggplant, milk, sunflower seeds
- Carbohydrates: potatoes, cereals, dried beans, pumpkin, courgettes, beets, carrots, cauliflower, sweet fruits - raisins, dried apricots, figs, persimmons, dates, dried pears and sweet apples
- Fats: all types of vegetable oils, nuts, lard, fatty meat, sour cream, cream
- Green vegetables: lettuce, celery, onions, spinach, sorrel, dill, parsley, cucumbers, cabbage, garlic, rhubarb, sweet peppers of all colors, all types are rare, etc.
- Fruits: sour (including tomatoes), semi-sweet
As you can see, fat-free salad is a desirable ingredient in all meals. Bread and butter are also compatible.
Change your diet gradually based on food compatibility and shelton separate feeding principles
Using this classification, you can choose a daily diet in such a way that the foods are not only compatible, but correspond to the proportion of the consumption of acidic and alkaline foods, which should be about half.
As you change your diet gradually, increase your intake of raw foods because they provide the energy that the body needs that we cannot get from another source.

Here are some basic food rules according to Grebert Shelton from his book "Fasting and Health":
1. Eat acidic foods 15-30 minutes before meals.
2. Eat acidic foods and starches at different times.
3. Eat acidic foods and proteins at different times.
4. Eat starches and proteins at different times.
5. Eat only one concentrated protein at a time.
6. Eat protein and fat at different times.
7. Eat proteins and sugars at different times.
8. Eat starches and sugars at different times.
9. Drink milk separately from other foods (30 minutes after sour fruits).
10. Eat melons separately from other foods (the same about fruits).
11. Eat sweet and sour fruits at different meals.
12. Eat sugar and sour fruits at different meals.
13. Eat greens with sour fruits and cottage cheese (or nuts).
14. Eat greens with sweet or semi-sweet fruits, but don't add anything else.
15. Do not eat more than two foods rich in sugar and starch at one time.
16. Water should be drunk 10-15 minutes before meals. Better 15 minutes before acids such as sour fruits, tomatoes, cranberries, sorrel, rhubarb, etc.
17. Avoid desserts. If you have to eat it, then with lots of greens.
18. Be especially careful to avoid chilled desserts such as ice cream.
19. It is better to eat fruit in the morning (you can then eat sour cream, cream, yogurt, etc.), in the afternoon - starches, in the evening - squirrels.
20. Combines well: fat with starch, melons with other non-acidic fresh fruits, non-starchy greens with starch, or proteins or fat, especially with a natural combination of protein and fat such as sour cream, cheese, nuts, etc. It is especially effective in this regarding raw cabbage. The antiseptic properties of fresh herbs can also help you when the protein (such as kefir) is peroxidized.
21. Typical dietary and non-dietary nasty things: mayo-nez, all sandwiches, except for bread and butter, canned food like "fish in oil or tomato sauce", cheese with raisins, buns with raisins, cottage cheese, jam, meat with tomato or other sour or hot sauce.
22. There is another combination that Shelton does not discuss, but some experts insist on the prohibition of which (Indra Devi, Paul Bragg and others) is the prohibition of starches in combination with foods rich in sulfur: cabbage, cauliflower, turnip, peas, eggs, figs, onions, carrots, garlic; flax seeds (experimental data). So, don't eat cabbage with starches!
Anything that reduces the digestive ability, anything that slows down the digestion process, anything that temporarily stops digestion will favor the activity of (harmful) bacteria. “Phenomena such as overeating, eating when tired, eating just before starting work, eating when a person is cold or overheated, eating with fever, pain, severe inflammation, when there is no feeling of hunger, when the person is anxious, anxious, full fear, anger, etc. " - food under all these and similar conditions favors the bacterial decomposition of the food eaten. "Seasonings, vinegar, alcohol ... slow down digestion, favor the activity of bacteria."
You can not eat before heavy physical exertion (loader, weightlifter) or work associated with significant mental or nervous stress. As for jogging at a good speed right after a meal, it will not hurt a trained person, and light jogging or cycling will allow you to relieve a small gastrointestinal pathology even immediately after a full course of fasting. But combining lively conversations, reading or work with food will obviously make it difficult for normal chewing, digestion and assimilation of food. Therefore, it is better to eat alone with the radio, and not with a talkative comrade. It is especially important to be disciplined when you have already started starches or proteins.
It would be good for a frozen person to drink plenty of hot water before eating.
Thanks to such a power system, you will greatly facilitate your life. The body does not have to spend extra energy on digesting, detoxifying, storing and removing harmful products. Also, such a diet promotes gradual weight loss. If you follow the rules of separate meals for at least a few months, you will see how your weight gradually returns to normal, your health improves, and vigor appears.
In our opinion, the system of separate nutrition should become the basis of any person's nutrition, which must be adhered to throughout his life. In fact, this is not so difficult and difficult. you just need an understanding of the processes occurring in our body and the desire to be healthy.
Hello, employees of the "Economy" editorial office. I have been receiving your newspaper for three years now, and I will subscribe while I am alive. I like everything about the newspaper. Whatever topic you don't touch, you will find everything. An out-of-the-box newspaper! And your Pakholkov is generally well done, a man that you need. He is not afraid of anyone, he decides all the questions right through, the problem of children of war has been brought up for discussion many times, but officials do not want to approve.
And now I have one question. How to separate proteins, carbohydrates and live foods? I collected a description from various magazines, but the granddaughter says that this is wrong.
Tamara Gioeva, Beslan, North Ossetia
Recently, the popularity of such a form of nutrition as the separate use of proteins, fats, carbohydrates has not waned. Separate meals are believed to provide a balanced diet in which all foods are absorbed to the fullest extent. Moreover, such nutrition allows you to quickly and permanently reduce weight, without severe restrictions on calorie intake and types of food.
The classical theory of food sharing suggests that foods from different food groups do not fit together because they require different enzymes to be digested. The use of such incompatible products leads to the fact that they are less digestible, retained in the intestines, and are subject to the decay process.
Founder Herbert Sheldon divided all products into four groups:
- protein (meat, fish, legumes, etc.);
- carbohydrate (fruits, sugars, starchy vegetables, cereals, bread, pastries);
- fats (animal fats and vegetable oils);
- sour (citrus fruits, pineapples, etc. fruits).
Green vegetables, as well as melons - watermelons and melons, which are used separately from all other products, are allocated separately.
Sheldon based his theory on data on the fermentation of the human stomach, on the basis of which fats suppress the secretion of gastric juice, and liquid food dilutes it. This leads to the fact that proteins are poorly broken down in the intestine, in which the fermentation process begins. All this not only makes it difficult to assimilate the necessary nutrients, but also provokes a variety of diseases.
