Sores of the German "one"

"Pennies" from Germany do not tolerate the Russian winter well. Often, after parking in the cold, the car does not start immediately. On four-cylinder 1.6-liter cars, two cylinders are seized.

Power units

BMW 1 Series can be equipped with both petrol and diesel power units: petrol 1.6 (116 and 122 hp), 2.0 (129 and 136 hp), 3.0 (265 hp), diesel 2.0 (from 115 to 207 hp). Owners of cars with the weakest engine often face the problem of starting the engine in the cold season. The fact is that during a cold start, not all cylinders are connected, as a result, difficult starting and unstable engine operation. The timing drive for this motor is chain, unfortunately, the first problems with it begin quite early (after 40,000 km).

The weak point is not the chain itself, but its tensioner, therefore, experienced owners, in order to avoid serious problems, recommend adjusting the chain tensioner every 30-40 thousand kilometers. Two-liter units are considered more reliable, although they also have malfunctions in the systems that are responsible for raising the intake valves. If the system fails, the corresponding indicator on the instrument panel comes on. Also, this disadvantage will negatively affect power and fuel consumption.

A three-liter engine is the most reliable among gasoline power units, unfortunately, there are very few cars with such an engine in the secondary market. If we talk in general about gasoline engines, then after 100,000 km oil consumption begins to increase, and the greater the mileage, the greater the consumption. Diesel engines are very reliable, but when buying cars with such an engine, you need to understand that they are demanding on the quality of oil and diesel fuel, plus diesel engines need to be serviced more often than gasoline ones. And if the previous owner neglected these requirements, then you will have to costly repair the fuel system and turbine.

Transmission

The basic version of the car is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic with the possibility of manual shifting was installed as an option. Choosing a used BMW 1 Series, it is better to opt for an automatic transmission. The fact is that many owners are young people who like to light up, as a result, the clutch dies very quickly, and the resource of the box also significantly decreased. Otherwise, the manual transmission does not present any unpleasant surprises. With an automatic machine, the most common problem is jerking when shifting in lower gears. In most cases, to fix the problem, it is enough to reflash the electronic control unit of the box.

An aluminum MacPherson-type suspension is installed in the front, a multi-link at the rear. Often, BMW's suspension is said to require a large investment in repairs. Unfortunately, the BMW 1 Series is one of such cars, and given the quality of our roads, the need for repairs will not keep you waiting long. Most often, you will have to change the stabilizer struts, every 30-40 thousand km, the front shock absorbers rarely live up to 50,000 km. The rest of the suspension elements last a little longer: arm bushings, rear shock absorbers, ball joints will ask for replacement closer to 100,000 km. In steering, the rack is very tenacious, but the tips rarely go more than 50,000 km. The service life of the braking system is highly dependent on the driving style, on average, front pads last 30,000 km, discs 60,000 km, rear pads 40,000 km, discs 80,000 km. Before buying, check if the steering wheel beats when braking, if the steering wheel beats, then the discs have already moved.

Replacing the emergency contact on the positive wire, which breaks the power circuit on impact, is not cheap (130 euros at the rate of 68 rubles per one euro), and when making homemade repairs, they are often limited to installing a "bug" instead.

But the electrician, alas, traditionally for BMW does not bypass corrosion. And more often than others, the same main food chain suffers! Sometimes, just two to four years later, without periodic treatment with anticorrosive, the contact of the positive wire, which is open to all the slabs from the bottom of the car, becomes a victim of road chemistry: it rotts away completely, and in especially advanced cases, corrosion finishes off the threaded contact pin. In three to five years, the trouble can move further along the chain: due to oxidation of the connection, the power connector "burns" already near the Junction Box switching unit.

The same age of three to five is also critical for the rear wiper: corrosion often paralyzes the mechanism inside the tailgate (120 euros), and in addition, the slush can finish off the lock of the door itself (50 euros) hidden under the brand emblem - this is exactly the trouble that befell us copy. And in the cabin, creaks from the bowels of the front panel can warn of a strike and another electric motor - a stove fan (170 euros for the original and 80-90 for analogues).

Well, the most offensive thing is to find a carpet soaked in water under your feet after a rain! I know this from myself: once upon a time an attack of such a proprietary illness comprehended and. Fortunately, for both relatives, the disease is treated without special costs: it is enough to remove the door trims and re-glue the departed waterproofing.

The early M47 series diesel is reliable but rare

By the way, the old cast-iron two-liter diesel on my X3 hasn't raised a single question in five years. This is also found in pre-styling "kopecks" older than 2007 - sorry, extremely rare (only 2-3% of cars). After all, 350-400 thousand kilometers is not a limit for the engine, but 250 thousand kilometers with proper care and fuel - for its turbocharger unit (600 euros), a high-pressure fuel pump (880 euros) and injectors (440 euros for the original and 260 for analogs). Up to 150 thousand kilometers, this diesel engine requires at least once every three to five years to renew the glow plugs (15 euros each), to monitor the cleanliness of the valve of the crankcase ventilation system and periodically flush the exhaust gas recirculation system EGR (170 euros): how and a DPF particulate filter (2,200 euros), it quickly clogs up from congestion city life. Then you will need to keep an eye on the intake manifold, inside which the flaps are worn out: if you miss the moment, their debris can cause trouble in the engine.

And if it smells of burnt rubber, it means that the previous owner did not change the crankshaft pulley for prophylaxis (€ 300 is a proprietary one and substitutes from € 140), and the torsional vibration damper collapsed.

The main trouble with the N47 diesel engine is the unreliable timing chain drive

However, the "aluminum" diesel of the new N47 series (about 6% of cars), which appeared in 2007, has the same bottlenecks as the veteran M47. And if only they!

This unit became famous not only for the fact that it was awarded the title “Engine of the Year” three times (in 2008, 2010 and 2011), but also for the extremely unsuccessful drive of the gas distribution mechanism in terms of reliability. In the first years of production, the chain could critically wear out in just 30-50 thousand kilometers! There are two scenarios for the development of events: either the tensioner selects its entire working stroke, and the loose chain jumps over the teeth of the sprocket, or the link crumbles and the chain breaks. In any case, the result is disastrous: the pistons meet the valves.

Realizing the scale of the miss, engineers immediately began to save the situation with endless upgrades. In a special risk group, BMW with a N47 diesel engine is older than 2009, since -2011 the problem rarely began to manifest itself earlier than 100 thousand kilometers, but even the “kopecks” of the last lots of 2012-2013 still need to listen to the engine: is there a clanking sound from rewinding a loosely tensioned chain (a set of chains, sprockets, tensioners and gaskets will cost 450 euros). The piquancy of the situation is that BMW engineers decided to attach the timing chain not in front, but behind, from the side of the gearbox - and for repairs you have to remove the engine!

The Bavarian Motor Plant burst into the C-segment of the automotive market so unexpectedly that the three leaders of Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3, Mercedes A170 did not even have time to come to their senses when they had a powerful rival in the face of the BMW 1 Series.

First generation BMW 1 Series

The basis for the creation of the BMW 1 Series was the compact 3 series, which was quite successful in many respects, produced from 1993 to 2004, more precisely, a 3-door hatchback on the E36 platform with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 102 horsepower. Having reduced the dimensions of the "treshka", gave its forms bold lines and, leaving the "filling" practically intact, BMW launched the 1st series in production in 2004. The CS1 concept car, prior to the launch of the BMW 1 Series, was unveiled at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. The official debut of the release, which is now starting the BMW lineup, took place at the 2004 Paris Auto Show.

Unlike other participants in the race for supremacy in the largest segment of the automotive market, the "one" BMW is rear-wheel drive, which gives it a certain exoticism against the background of front-wheel-drive golf-class cars. Moreover, the non-standard longitudinal placement of the engine under the hood of the BMW 1 release allows achieving excellent traction due to the low center of gravity and the distribution of the curb weight in a 50/50 ratio between the axles, and the verified aerodynamic body shape sets the drag coefficient equal to 0.29.

The One got its revolutionary aggressive design from BMW's lead designer Chris Bangle, a style that disrupted the evolution of BMW's conservative form and drew much criticism.
