First public reaction

The management of the Japanese company decided to present the second generation of the Pilot lineup back in 2008. With little preparation, in the fall, the brand held a demonstration at the North American Auto Show as part of an international exhibition. The public reacted to the novelty very ambiguously, because its external and technical characteristics made an ambiguous impression. Despite the presence of a very spacious and comfortable interior, the overall design of the car and the concept in which it was designed was repulsively brutal: too large and too angular. Due to the ambiguous reaction of the audience at the international exhibition and the not very successful launch of the model on the market, the management of the Japanese brand decided to slightly modernize the Honda Pilot 2008 (pilot).


The car was restyled in 2011, thanks to which the car acquired the following elements:

This crossover at one time surprised the audience with its dimensions, but this was expected, because the car is really large enough for its segment:

It is also worth saying that the restyled body of this representative of the lineup in the second generation looks very stylish. Meanwhile, it is clearly not without flaws:

  • quickly cloudy front optics;
  • taillights often fog up;
  • chrome-plated elements will peel off.

The power plant of the second generation crossover

The Japanese brand introduced a novelty to the world and, in particular, the Russian market, significantly limiting potential buyers in their choice. So, only one engine option was available. In this case, we are talking about the J35Z4 model, the volume of which is 3.5 liters, and the initial power indicator was 257 horsepower. Recall that since 2011 the engine has been deformed, so that today the 249 horsepower engine option is widespread on the market.

It is worth noting that the engine installed in the 2008 Honda Pilot has one very significant advantage. The power plant of the model has a pre-installed specialized VCM system. The essence of its work is that it continuously monitors the operation of the power plant and, if necessary, turns off three or two cylinders in the rear block. The introduction of this feature into the power plant was necessary, since at the time of the creation and start of car sales, the problem of saving fuel resources was especially acute.


For the development of the J35Z4 engines, the specialists of the Japanese company used their own developments dating back to 1999. We are talking about the power plant, codenamed J35A1, which formed the basis for the Odyssey RA6-9 / RL.


Typical problems arising in the operation of a modified power plant

Several years of active sales of this crossover allowed qualified specialists to determine the list of the main problems that are associated with the operation of the engine in the car system:

  • When the mileage of the car exceeds 100 thousand kilometers, the camshafts wear out almost immediately. It is worth noting that, as a rule, both camshafts are subjected to wear at once. Meanwhile, exceptions are also possible. So, sometimes after 100 thousand kilometers, only the front camshaft has to be changed. This problem is caused by the so-called oil starvation, which in turn arises from the influence of two main factors. First of all, it should be said about the unforgivable negligence of car owners who do not control the oil level. However, the constructive miscalculation of the model developers cannot be denied, because it is obvious that for some reason they reduced the volume of the internal combustion engine lubrication system. In this regard, oil from the sump during a cold start of the engine in a low temperature mode fully enters directly into the power unit. Note that the restyling of the model in 2011 could not solve this problem.
  • Another drawback of the VCM system is regular oil leaks from under its block. In most cases, it goes directly to the generator of the power plant. This can only be fixed by repairing the motor.
  • The catalysts in the model are capable of withstanding a mileage in the range of 120-150 thousand kilometers. Most often they are not changed by installing flame arresters, the cost of which is an order of magnitude less.
  • The crossover design contains expensive hydraulic supports, which will have to be changed at least every 150 thousand kilometers.

Virtually hassle-free transmission

The second generation Honda pilot (2008) received a transmission really unpretentious. However, in order for its functioning not to be associated with the regular occurrence of a mass of malfunctions, competent service is necessary. So, the correct maintenance of the 5-speed automatic transmission installed in the car consists in the systematic monitoring of the oil condition and its timely replacement. In addition, it is very important to carry out a professional technical inspection of the machine on a regular basis in order to locate fogging and oil leaks in time.

The machine comes with an all-wheel drive system called VTM-4, which has proven itself remarkably in the automotive market even as part of the first generation Acura MDH. This is also true for the suspension installed in this crossover. Of course, it is ideal for long journeys. However, for comfort during long trips, you will have to pay a decent amount, because the rear struts are handed over for another 70 thousand kilometers, and the front ones fail after 140 thousand kilometers. Due to the fact that the acquisition of new levers is a very expensive business, many owners of a car of this model solve the problem as follows: the ball rods and silent tires are repressed, as a result, working for at least 200 thousand kilometers.

Hub bearings will not fail earlier than after 100 thousand kilometers, and the rear springs sag on a run of at least 180 thousand. The latter is subject to the regular transportation of heavy loads. The steering rack at a hundredth thousand kilometers will make itself felt with a strong tapping.


With regard to steering, it must be said that a large weight significantly reduces the maneuverability of the car, so such a crossover most likely will not be spirited around the corner even with skillful driving. However, in all other aspects, they are in no way inferior to their counterparts. The side airbag, which is designed for the front passenger, also works on the basis of an intelligent system. This cushion assumes the presence of specialized sensors, which in turn fully read the position in which the passenger sits on the seat and make adjustments to the release of this safety device.


The interior can be called conservative, but at the same time comfortable. The seats are arranged in such a way that the passenger can sit reclining. Additional items in the cabin include:

Despite the fact that the brand positions this crossover as an eight-seater, this designation is rather arbitrary. In the third row, it will be very difficult for the three passengers to fit. But, if necessary, you can get rid of these seats and, thereby, add space in the luggage compartment.

Advantages:I bought a fully loaded car. The best on the market simply does not exist. The salon is like a comfortable apartment, there is a lot of space, you can play football, many different gadgets, niches, cup holders, everything is conveniently and well thought out. The seats are comfortable, both for driver and passenger. The audio system is excellent, the sound is excellent. The on-board computer is multifunctional, it shows almost all information. Soundproofing is just class. Heated all seats. Powerful, three-zone climate control. It is very warm in the car in winter. The trunk lid can be opened both from the interior and from the key, and you can open both the entire lid and only one glass. The dynamics are excellent, the handling is also great, the stabilization system works well, only when the road is bad, the car must be held. The engine is powerful and high-spirited, jumps are not felt. The automatic transmission works well, there are no failures. There is a button on the box for dynamic acceleration when overtaking, a very cool thing. The brakes are normal. Average consumption in the city is 15 liters. The suspension raises no complaints.

Disadvantages:The plastic in the cabin is a little easily soiled. No USB, just not clear why. There is no automatic folding of mirrors.

Operating experience:There are no problems at all. The car is almost perfect except for various little things. I advise, there is an opportunity, take it.

Advantages:The main factors for me were the presence of 3 rows of seats, a comfortable fit, low fuel consumption and a spacious trunk. Many options were eliminated, and only the Pilot came up in all parameters. When the third row is extended, a baby stroller, a children's bicycle and a couple of small bags from the store are placed in the trunk, and when the third row is folded, the seats are just a shaft, even if you live there. The service works as needed, quickly, efficiently and ... what is very important - inexpensive. The fit is very comfortable. Even with the third row, there is enough space in the cabin, passengers do not rest on their knees. Consumption pleased, the car is very economical. The car does not cause problems. In general, for a relatively small amount you get a spacious, comfortable, economical and reliable car. For me, there are no other such options anymore, definitely only the Pilot.

Disadvantages:There is no minus at all, this is a really very nice car.

Advantages:I always liked Honda, I bought a Pilot last summer. Of course, I considered many options (the family is large and my mother-in-law lives with us, so I wanted three rows, a normal trunk and a comfortable fit). The full-size Pilot Honda crossover appeared in Russia only with the release of the 2nd generation. 8-seater 5-door crossover of the second generation was produced in America and designed as a classic American jeep. In the world market, the crossover was positioned as a full-size one, but its dimensions were even higher than the declared class: length - 4.8 m, width - 2, height - 1.85, weight - 2 tons. During the restyling, the manufacturer changed the technical characteristics of the 2011 Honda Pilot, and also took into account the public's opinion on the exterior. The developers have introduced a new design for the front bumper, grille and wheel rims. The front and rear optics have slightly changed in the car. Unfortunately, the adherents of the brand noted that after the update, the body flaws did not disappear - a thin and easily scratched paintwork and chrome coating, fogging taillights, and quickly dimming the front ones. But there were also negative changes: the ground clearance decreased to 200.
Three modifications of the Honda Pilot 2012 appeared on the Russian market, the characteristics corresponded to the prices:

The all-wheel drive is modified using the vector distribution of the rear axle thrust not by braking, but by means of the torque that is taken to the rear axle through a separate overdrive gearbox. This helps to “enter” corners more smoothly.

  • Forced locking of rear gear clutches in modern Honda Pilot is abolished. The developers considered it necessary to remove it because of the acting frictional clutches of the rear axle shafts, which must constantly slip, thereby compensating for the difference in the speed of rotation of the rear and front wheels. Management is carried out automatically.
  • It should be noted that Honda is the first car to receive four cross-country modes: snow, mud, sand and normal. Throttle responses are altered by electronic traction control, as is the automatic transmission with AWD and stability control.
