The smooth slope of the hood, bypassing the windshield, slowly flows into the high roof, which does not have sharp drops in level. GS engines were initially aggregated with Aisin hydromechanical automatic transmissions. The three-liter GS received the A760E six-speed transmission, while the GS430 was equipped with the Aisin A761E automatic transmission, also used on the Lexus LS flagship sedan and the Lexus SC sports coupe.

As for the hybrid, the description of the GS450h, as well as other Toyota / Lexus hybrid models, often refers to the CVT transmission. An incorrect literal translation of the term E-CVT is misleading here. In fact, the Lexus Hybrid Drive does not use a CVT, but an electric motor and planetary gear. They function in a similar manner to a variator (CVT), providing infinitely variable power transmission. At the same time, the system works without mechanical connection between the engine and controls, according to the drive-by-wire principle. Both the gas pedal and the transmission selector command the powertrain through the electronic control unit.

A little later, all-wheel drive modifications with the AWD index came out and the GS300 became one of the first cars of the brand with all-wheel drive.


The all-wheel drive GS appeared on the Russian market in 2010. All-wheel drive on GS is non-disconnectable. It is implemented using the UF1AE transfer case, in which the center differential and the center differential limiter are installed coaxially on the transmission output shaft. The main hydraulic pressure of the transmission is also used to control the differential limiter. In the center differential, a planetary gear with 4 satellites is used. The third generation GS introduced Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB), Electric Power Steering (EPS), while the Hybrid and V8 models featured Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS). The Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, which worked in conjunction with the VGRS, was also standard on the GS 430 and GS450h, and later on the GS460 version.


The GS Sedan was the first in the Lexus range to feature the SmartAccess keyless entry and start system. The list included advanced options at that time, such as a touch-sensitive color display in the center console, optitronic instrument illumination that changes its intensity depending on the brightness of sunlight, LED-LED interior lighting, Bluetooth system. An optional Mark Levinson Hi-End audio system with fifteen speakers was offered.


The basic set of safety systems included driver, passenger and side (curtain) airbags, as well as knee airbags; adaptive headlights, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, emergency braking assistance and electronic stability control. Adaptive Variable Stiffness Suspension (AVS) was available for V8 and hybrid models in Western markets.

In 2008, it became part of the standard GS300 / 460. A suspension with active stabilizers was installed on request.

The GS Adaptive Suspension is controlled by a computer that independently adjusts the damping force of the highly responsive monotube shock absorbers on all four wheels to suit the driving maneuver and road conditions. To change the damping force, the step motor of the shock absorber control system drives the rotary valve on the piston, changing the degree of opening of the oil channels connecting the above-piston and sub-piston chambers.

Adaptive cruise control with frontal collision warning with radar-based automatic braking was optionally offered. The hybrid GS 450h was one of the first vehicles to feature an infrared-based driver attention monitoring device.


The creators of the GS put special emphasis on safety and the business sedan received a combined electronic dynamics control system (VDIM). It includes the function of the anti-rollback system and the functions of a limited slip differential - when a steering and wheel slip is detected, the VDIM system brakes the drive wheel, which is internal to the center of rotation. This eliminates slipping, leads to the transfer of traction to the outer wheel relative to the center of rotation, and thus the acceleration desired by the driver occurs.


RESTYLING

Since 2007, the production of the GS 350 was launched with a new engine - a 3.5 liter V6 (2GR-FSE), developing 303 hp. and a year later, the GS430 was replaced by a version with a 4.6-liter 1UR-FE 342 hp engine, also borrowed with the 8-speed AA80E from the flagship LS 460. The exhaust system for the 3GR-FE and 3GR-FSE engines was upgraded.

Other important changes in the 2008 restyling concern the braking system. They are shown in the table below.


Changes were also made to the design - the GS received new front and rear bumpers, new headlights, a different radiator grille and door handles with a beveled, new design wheels. On the restyled version, the turn repeaters were placed in the side mirror housings. The dashboard and interior trim have changed. The GS460 comes standard with a new 3-spoke steering wheel in wood and leather. It was available as an option on the GS300, as was the leather-trimmed wooden gear knob.

The list of colors has also been updated, but in our country the most popular Lexus color is black. The DVD navigation system has been replaced with a hard disk drive.

A new compressor and condenser were used in the air conditioning system for 2008 vehicles. The door lock control system has received additional functions. In European versions, a mechanical key lock function has been added to disable the alarm mode. Changed graphics and fonts of the menus on the dashboard. On the restyled car, the buttons for opening the gas tank and trunk on the pull-out panel have been replaced with traditionally located buttons.

A lot of changes were made to the interior for the market of the Middle East and China, there were special interior configurations for the Balkan countries, but the chance to meet these cars in Russia is close to zero.

In addition to the official restyling, the car was constantly undergoing updates. They consisted of adding or removing various options in different markets. Traditionally for Lexus, which cost the new one cheaper than its German competitors, it better retains its residual value and in the secondary market the third-generation Lexus GS is already more expensive than BMW or Mercedes-Benz of the same year.

PACKAGING

There were quite different configuration options for different markets. This applies to motors and safety and comfort options.

Officially GS was presented in our country in three trim levels: Executive (basic), Premium (basic equipment plus a rear spoiler, leather and wood steering wheel trim, leather interior, ventilated front seats) and Luxury (Premium equipment, to which the Mark audio system was added Levinson ® 15 speakers, navigation system with DVD, DVD changer for 6 discs).

The GS 460, which entered the Russian market in 2008, was offered only in the Luxury configuration, which includes such amenities as ventilated seats and the Mark Levinson system. Overall, apart from the engine and gearbox, the differences between Luxury and Premium are minimal.

Especially for the Russian market, the "northern package" was available, which includes more powerful heating of the seats and the interior, as well as a battery of increased capacity.

At the time of the release for the complete set of the GS 300 Executive, they asked 1,947,000 rubles. For Premium - 2,008,000 rubles, and for Luxury - 2,170,000 rubles.

SELECTION IN THE SECONDARY MARKET

These cars do not differ any more problematic in maintenance - there are no "exotic" parts. When buying a "gray" car, you just need to be aware that you imported it in order to earn money, and not to make you happy with a super low price. Low price combined with good condition and low mileage is only possible with a remanufactured car. Many of the American cars were brought in from auctions, where they ended up as "drowned".

As a percentage, cars with V6 3.0 and 3.5 liters are many times more common on the secondary. This is due to the greater availability of such cars at the price at the time of the first purchase, a lower tax burden and the ability to choose an all-wheel drive option. Moreover, the three-liter all-wheel drive GS will be "American" - officially such cars were not sold in our country. If we talk about the preference of rear-wheel drive and AWD models, then a number of experts believe, based on experience and the history of customer requests, that the boxes of all-wheel drive versions are more durable.

WE CHOOSE A CAR AND ASSESS POSSIBLE PROBLEMS

The first and foremost condition is that the car must have an even geometry. Body repairs must be performed with high quality. The headlights must be of the same age, the layer of paint and putty, which is determined by the device, must be within the normal range. All protective covers must be in place under the hood, the fasteners must be the same. The engine underneath protection should also be present. The oil change tag should ideally be affixed to the bonnet. If the owner twisted the run, he will delete it.

The neat owner will have a service history. It will not necessarily be a service book - it is quite normal if there is just a bunch of work orders. Although, the history of calls can be obtained provided that the car was serviced in a specialized or club service.

On the move, the machine should be smooth, the gears should shift smoothly. Vibration during acceleration and braking should not be felt.


Choosing a Lexus GS III in the price range of up to 800,000 rubles, you need to be aware that it will be a fairly old car and, most likely, its engine will already be repaired. This, by the way, is not bad. But provided that the repair was carried out by qualified specialists who know TOYOTA technology, and the motor is covered by a warranty.

In the case of an "American" or "Arab", there may be more cats in the bag. This does not mean at all that all cars from the USA and the Middle East are notorious trash. It's just that the chances of getting a car with a "history" in the case of them are greater. In 100%, such a car will be broken with varying degrees of severity. Be realistic - there are no unbroken cars in the secondary market.

In case you are looking at powerful versions with V8 engines, it is safe to say that all the copies that you find on the secondary housing have been in an accident. But in the production of the third generation GS, Toyota did not use "space" technologies such as adhesive bonding, aluminum and others, which means that the GS is quite maintainable. The main thing is that the body repairs are performed efficiently. Again, only a service specialist who can identify the car on which, instead of being repaired in compliance with the technologies, is simply "hung" and painted with external body elements, can determine whether the repair was carried out with high quality.

ENGINES

Lexus GS with a three-liter 3GR-FSE engine can be considered a recommended car for those who are satisfied with good (7.2 seconds up to 100 km / h at a top speed of 238 km / h), but not the best dynamics, with a minimum of problems.

A car with a 3.5-liter 2GR-FSE, with slightly better dynamics and more power, is also more problematic. By making the engine more powerful and the car faster, TOYOTA sacrificed reliability. It is this version of the GS that is famous for its fifth cylinder, which fails due to an oversight of the cooling and lubrication system. In varying degrees of neglect, the solution to the problem can cost from 140,000 rubles, if you choose to repair, and not install a contract motor.


In general, the three-liter engine is more reliable than the 3.5-liter. Timing chain stretching is practically not found on it, while they are on a 3.5-liter unit. But this one must be taken into account the operating conditions of the previous owners.

Both engines can travel up to 300,000 km without major repairs. If the car has been used improperly (non-observance of oil change intervals, low-quality oil and gasoline, the radiator has not been washed), then the intervention of the minders may be required for 150,000 km. During overhaul, the engine is sleeveless, the rings and the engine repair kit are changed.

With runs of 100,000 km or more, it may be necessary to replace the water pump (pump), in especially severe cases this may be required for 80,000 km. The cost of a spare part is about 12,000 rubles. The replacement work will cost about 5,000 rubles.

On cars that lived in metropolitan areas with heavy traffic, with runs over 150,000 km, it may be necessary to repair the starter (replacement of the retractor relay or bendix) and the generator. Repair cost: from 5000 to 8000 rubles, but in the latter case it is easier to purchase a contract one.

Cars that have been in operation with high mileage, but on highways, can roll without repair with an original starter and generator twice the mileage. According to service specialists, on cars of those years, for three replaced pumps, there is one appeal for a problem with a charging or starter.

The cooling system does not bring unpleasant surprises, especially if the radiator is regularly, every spring, washed and removed from the car. This procedure costs an average of 3,500 rubles.

Versions with engines 4.3 and 4.6 are famous for their reliability, since, as mentioned above, they use the box and gearbox from the heavier Lexus LS sedan.


In general, Lexus GS 430 and 460 are among the most attractive on the market. Yes, in most regions in terms of taxes, it will not be the cheapest in car maintenance, but the expenses will justify themselves with the best mileage of the units, excellent dynamics and "margin" under the pedal when driving and overtaking. Especially on the track.

Unfortunately, they only exist in rear-wheel drive versions. The powerful engine, combined with some "thoughtfulness" of Toyota's stabilization system, makes the management of such cars a little more difficult in winter and on wet roads.

Automatic transmission and transmission

Boxes on all GS versions are quite tenacious and can go up to 200 thousand km without repair. The resource of boxes for models with engines 4.3 and 4.6 is higher, but this advantage is somewhat reduced by the fact that they bought these cars to drive fast and have fun. Boxes on all GS versions are repairable, although the cost of repair is quite high - about 80,000 rubles.

GS's gearbox and universal joint do not know any problems, but if the specimen you are examining has a SMOTRA.RU sticker or a similar decoration, then you can meet any problems even with these reliable components and assemblies. Vehicles that have survived transmission tuning should be avoided in every possible way.

Some complaints can be made about the GS braking system. While it does its job well on the GS300 and GS350, it is not as effective on the GS450h and GS430. The four-door is equipped with petrol “fours” and V-shaped “sixes” with a volume of 2.0-3.5 liters, developing 245-316 horsepower and 350-380 Nm of peak traction and combined with automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive (optional - all-wheel drive transmission).
Hybrid modifications are also provided for the car, the power plants of which combine gasoline engines and electric motors, with a total capacity of 223-345 "mares" and a return of 221-352 Nm of rotating potential.

The fourth generation of the Ji-Es is built on the sports-modernized platform of its predecessor with extensive use of high-strength grades of steel and aluminum components. On the front axle there is a double wishbone suspension with levers made of "winged metal", and at the rear there is a "multi-link".
Optionally, the car is equipped with an electronically controlled chassis with variable stiffness, and the F-sedan has its own passive ZF Sachs shock absorbers.
On all wheels of the sedan there are ventilated discs of the brake center with ABS, EBD and other “assistants”, and its steering system consists of a rack and pinion mechanism and an adaptive electric booster.
