  • quiet, high-torque, economical motor
  • spacious salon
  • large trunk

Minuses

  • cheap plastic
  • mediocre transformability
  • no armrest
  • lack of automatic transmission

Total

The machine is woven from contradictions. On the one hand, a convincing economical diesel engine, which is not audible even in extreme modes, a comfortable suspension, a spacious interior ... On the other hand, poor materials, poor transformability, dubious ergonomics, and for some reason mechanics (in principle, I do not understand manual transmissions on family vans, designed to smoothly move the family). Therefore, the audience for which it is intended is rather difficult to determine. Perhaps the buyer of this car is the head of the family between the ages of 30 and 40… This range is narrow, but after 40 you want an automatic machine, and up to 30 you can't afford a van. Well, who said that the positioning of the Spanish brand should be easy?

Appearance

Although I try to never discuss design, because everything is individual here - some people like red, some like round ones - but in this case I take off my hat to Walter da Silva. The Seat lineup is endowed with charm and is absolutely recognizable in the stream of cars. The design is ageless, although it can hardly be called classic. I think in this case we have a place with the masterpiece of the Master. All of the above can be attributed to Altea CL. The only thing, in my opinion, is a heavy feed. But, in fact, this is what makes it different from just Altea. Well, and if this heaviness and smears the overall impression, then hardly ...

I'll put a solid 5 for the design!

Salon and ergonomics

"Poor, but neat." The plastic is hard and echoing, which, again, is traditional for Seat. Perhaps the chrome edging of the center console is great for refreshing the overall gloomy interior. To the place of chrome on the handles of the ventilation system and the radio. The interior is spacious - you don't feel a lack of space either in front or behind. The upholstery appears to be durable. However, the feeling does not leave that they were clearly saving on the salon. At the stated price, the consumer has the right to expect more - better materials. However, the interior is quiet - no insects were found. If they do not appear over time, then it will be easy to put up with rustic plastic. In general, here - by 4 with a minus.

Comfortable getting in and out. It is to sit down, not climb, climb, etc. With my 186 I sit freely behind me on the back row of seats. Choosing a fit for yourself is as easy as shelling pears. The adjustment range of both the chair and the steering wheel will be enough for the most demanding. You sit behind the wheel quite high - van after all. And it's damn convenient! The overview is the best, the front struts practically do not interfere. I would like the rear-view mirrors a little longer. There are no complaints about the governing bodies - everything is absolutely accessible, you can figure it out without instructions. The front console is very comfortable - its angle of inclination is matched perfectly to control both climate and music. The steering wheel is comfortable and good in design. He would still have a leather braid!

But here there are also disadvantages - consider that there is no front armrest. And the right elbow is constantly hanging in the air - hello, Zhiguli! But the constant illumination of the instrument panel pleases - it is very convenient, readability is at a height in any weather. True, you will have to get used to the tidy itself - you need to get used to the “half past five” arrows looking in alpha-style. You can't grab a quick glance right away - is it another 60 or already 80 and it's time to turn on the fifth? For the engine is quiet, and the speed is practically not felt. Here is solid 4. (Something needs to be done with the armrest.)

The trunk is good! Correctly shaped, spacious, with shelves and hooks. It can be increased by sliding the rear seats and changing them to a more vertical angle of inclination of their backs. The range of these manipulations is wide enough. The curtain covering it moves in one motion. Conveniently. But the transformation of the cabin let us down. Only the backs of the rear seats fold down and a flat floor will not work for anything! In addition, the back of the front seat will not fold down either - you will have to be creative when transporting long vehicles! 4 comes out again.

Engine, box, drive

Here are solid pluses! With dimensions - no problem. Although it is a minivan, its length is at the level of mid-size sedans, so there are no problems with parking or maneuvering. The eversion is good enough, the steering wheel turns easily, but with a set of speed it gets heavier - offset! Yes, and there are no problems with visibility - forward, backward, sideways (I already spoke about square mirrors above). Manageability - at altitude! Both maneuvering and avoiding obstacles are easy and effortless. Again, you shouldn't forget that this is a van. The car perfectly obeys the steering wheel and goes where the driver wants, without hesitation. First gear - to get under way. It makes no sense to "trample" on it. But what a gorgeous second! Powerful pick-up, squeezing into the chair - and the whole stream of cars is already behind! Further - trolleybus third. Pulls always and everywhere - after all, diesel. But this is still a diesel engine and it does not forgive mistakes in choosing gears. Try to turn on fourth gear at 40! I tried it - nothing good, the motor immediately explained who was in charge, and I quickly tucked the third one. Acceleration is smooth but fast. I can’t believe the stated 12.5 to a hundred. Feels like much faster. Overtaking - no problem! The acceleration is almost instantaneous. But so good - up to 120 km / h. Further - alas ... You can accelerate, but it takes a long time and is completely uneconomical. The eye rejoices when at 90 km / h you see the numbers 3.2 of instant consumption! Well, and rightly so: since they bought a diesel engine, they were going to save money. So save! And in order to "blame all the money" - there are turbo fuel. A separate respect for the suspension! We wondered for a long time, during the test drive, where did the persistent conviction about the gear-breaking of the SEAT chassis come from? Until they bother to look at the price list: it turns out that now all the Seatas are equipped with the "Comfort Suspension" option. And the name, I tell you, is absolutely apt! Exactly comfort! If you don't go, you swim! At the same time, the suspension is elastic and quiet! Neither joints nor irregularities are practically heard or felt - only light swaying. I don’t know what the Seat engineers did with the suspension, but they did it very right! Here, IMHO, 4 is appropriate, albeit with a plus (not 5, because there is no automatic transmission).

More and more carmakers stop competing in industries and start competing in segments. In the minivan segment, SEAT, as though modestly quiet, but still a very serious market participant, presented a car that is not only not ashamed to sell, but which one can be proud of. I wouldn't be surprised if we find out soon about their successes in the field of SUVs or premium cars.

Probably few people know that the country of siesta and bullfighting Spain is in the top ten countries in the world and in third place in Europe for car production. Moreover, having overtaken in both lists one of the cradles of the world car industry - Italy. But it was Fiat, in the mid-50s, that lit the Seat star in Barcelona, \u200b\u200bwhich now sparkles in the VW constellation.

Appearance

So, Seat Altea XL. I don't know what Altea means in Spanish, but the XL prefix, I think, will be clear to everyone. From the first glance at the car, it is clear that "size matters." Compared to the traditional Ibiza and Leon, which we mainly see on the road, the car looks bigger and maybe even more impressive. As I later found out, this is also a masterpiece of the designer Walter de Silva. Traditional smooth lines and a brand-recognizable decorative grille, a large windshield and wide side windows, I will say a few words about the rear one a little later.

Salon and ergonomics

The landing is comfortable. The salon itself, at first glance, is not remarkable at all. But on the second, more intent, it becomes clear that the designers have succeeded in one trick - to find the edge of where a simple station wagon turns into a minivan and vice versa. It is not big, as it would seem, a minivan should be, but it is also not standard, like an average station wagon. In general, probably the golden mean. At the same time, judging by the size of the trunk (as they say, TTX - 532 liters), you can put all the suitcases there for a family trip, and the trunk on the wide roof will allow you to take your favorite sofa with you.

Engine, box, drive

Go. Under the hood, the car has a diesel engine with a capacity of one hundred and five horsepower and a volume of 1.9 liters. As for such a car, with its two tons of gross curb weight, the engine is ideal. At the same time, fuel consumption during a test drive in urban mode is about 7 liters, and urban and mixed is kept in the region of 4.5 - 5.5 per 100 km. Not bad at today's fuel prices. When starting off and in first gear, like any diesel engine, the car is a little thoughtful, but only the gear lever gets to the number “two”, wonderful things begin. The machine shows wonders of agility, and those who have not yet had the syndrome "I will die, but I will be the first from the traffic lights" still have a chance, with the right combination of gas and clutch pedals, to become leaders even in a diesel minivan.

Controllability. To be honest, I did not notice anything conceptually and revolutionary new. The car drives normally, there are no special frills as well as failures. Although stability may be a sign of mastery? Suspension. There was everything on our route. And good asphalt, and almost none of it, and both types of rails: railway and tram, and speed bumps. Maybe, of course, the car is new, or they drove through all these obstacles carefully, but the suspension never stumbled, and stoically took over everything. Which is very gratifying, because quite often, because of the adaptation of the ordinary running gear of a passenger car to a larger body, minivans love to rattle in the ears of their passengers, shaking and tossing them on potholes and potholes.

Where is the fly in the ointment? But everything cannot be cool, otherwise what kind of folk test is this? As for me, the rear window has a rather small area, and the tall trunk slightly reduces visibility. The same can be said about the right side mirror, which is somewhat narrower than the driver's. Therefore, when maneuvering in reverse, especially when parking parallel, it is necessary to more carefully monitor the rear right corner, the visibility of which is somewhat limited. But if there is parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and the driver is simply not too lazy to turn his head back, this problem ceases to be relevant.

pros

  • dynamics
  • fuel consumption
  • interior and trunk size
  • appearance
  • suspension

Minuses

  • minor flaws in the ergonomics of the cabin
  • visibility

Total

The car is ambiguous. There are many small (and not so much) flaws, which, buying a car for that kind of money (from 20 to 30 thousand dollars), I would not want to see. Turbodiesel - excellent. The suspension is good. In addition, the appearance, the size of the cabin and the fuel consumption are pleasing. A car requires a more careful weighing of the pros and cons. I would not buy. For this money, you want to get a car thought out to the smallest detail, and a lot of questions arise about ALTEA XL. Perhaps it will suit the role of a family car.

Appearance

In my opinion, this car looks very, very good (especially in white). As in any SEAT - sporty character is felt. This effect is enhanced by a “wave” that starts from the front wheel arch and, across the entire body line, falls to the rear. In addition, the roof lowered at the rear of the car also adds external dynamics. Thanks to the slightly low landing (many will say that this is a drawback), the car inspires stability, confidence and reliability. But, familiar to the people of Kiev, riding on curbs requires care.

Salon and ergonomics

The salon caused ambivalent feelings. On the one hand, everything seems to be of high quality and beautiful. Nice materials, plenty of space. On the other hand, something was bothering me all the time: either my knee rested in a strange way against the protrusion of the center console, then the elbow against the protrusions on the front door, then something else. It is possible that these little things disappear during prolonged use of the machine, but the first impression is this. The dashboard is perfectly visible, but, again, there is a small nuance: when the tachometer needle is at 2500 rpm (the most actively used mode), it almost completely covers the left turn indicator. I did not like it.

While on the move, I was looking for the emergency gang button for a very long time, which (as it turned out later) is located behind the gear lever. Terribly inconvenient. In addition, I really missed the control of the audio system on the steering wheel - the buttons on the dashboard are far enough away - you need to reach for them. It is not very convenient on the move, and probably not very safe.

The driver's seat is comfortable enough. I was very pleased with the height adjustment - you can sit low, like in a car, and very high, like in a jeep. Even the fact that she did not cause mechanical discomfort. The airflow in the passenger compartment is noisy enough. The tested model did not have climate control (only air conditioning), and it was not possible to set the optimal airflow mode. I had to open the windows. The overall insulation is very good. In the cabin, there are practically no extraneous sounds.

Regarding visibility - again two radically opposite sensations. The first is mirrors. With them, everything is just super. Everything is visible, distortions are minimal, there are no questions. But the second is the front and side struts. The front one covers a very large part of the view, the side one closes the view during right turns almost completely. The trunk is huge, there is a lot of space for passengers, both front and rear. Owners of large families and a large number of frequently transported things will definitely like it.

Engine, box, drive

The test drive was a turbocharged diesel version of the car with a manual transmission. I liked the engine very much. Dynamic, quiet, economical, high-speed turbodiesel. Stable both at low and high revs. In the urban cycle, consumption is up to 6 liters. It would seem, what could be better? I also liked the box rather than not. The bad news is that during gear changes, the engine speed drops very quickly to the standard 900 rpm in a state of calm. This leads to slight twitching and jerking. The balance is well chosen in the course of the lever - it is neither long nor short. Suitable for any type of driving.

While testing ALTEA XL, I noticed one oddity: I really didn't want to include 5th gear. Firstly, in the city, the speed range is from 50-100 km / h - this means that the most frequently used gears are the third and fourth (at rpm from 2 to 3.5 thousand). Secondly, in this mode, the engine keeps rpm perfectly, hums pleasantly and reacts very responsively to pressing the gas pedal. Thanks to the turbine, this unit accelerates very actively - it is quite possible to compete with those who like to start from a traffic light. Activity drops significantly after 140 km / h, but there is nothing strange about that. The suspension is pretty good. Small pits, irregularities and cracks in the coating are completely swallowed unnoticed. I was a little alarmed by swaying on rough roads, but this is more the fault of the road than the suspension.

To assess how justified the claims of the Spaniards to kinship with Audi, as well as what are the overall chances of SEAT in Russia, we conducted a test drive of the largest Seat - a compact van Altea XL.

Having left the Russian market a year and a half ago, the Spanish Seat returned to us again, and even with an expanded model range. We tested one of the largest models - the Altea XL.

Marketers of the Russian dealer of the Seat company are very offended when their cars are compared with Volkswagen or Skoda models, and at every opportunity they remind that the Spanish Seat belongs to the sports line of the VW concern, just like Audi and Lamborghini. Meanwhile, Seat's lineup is still limited to variations on the chassis of the Audi A3 / Volkswagen Golf V, and on the basis of the baby Volkswagen Polo, while for Audi this is just the beginning, not to mention Lamborghini.

To assess how justified the claims of the Spaniards to a relationship with Audi, as well as what are the overall chances of SEAT in Russia, we conducted a test drive of the largest Seat, the Altea XL compact van. Only the all-terrain version of the Altea 4 Freetrack with four-wheel drive and increased ground clearance can be more expensive.

To be honest, any mention of XL for me rather has a negative connotation - images of oversized young ladies and large cars to compensate for the size of my own Ego immediately pop up in my head. However, I liked the Altea XL even in the showroom. The embossed bonnet and body sides set the Seat apart from the gray car mass. Even in Europe, with its very motley car park, Spanish cars always attract attention, especially if they are painted in the corporate bright yellow color. The secret of success lies in the spectacular design created by Walter de Silva, who was lured by Volkswagen from Alfa Romeo. Remember the Alfa 156 family and the Alfa 147 hatchback - they were created by de Silva. First, Walter completely renewed the model line of the avant-garde Spanish brand, and now he has set about redesigning the more conservative Audi, drawing TT, R8, A5 and the latest A4.

We got the Altea XL in burgundy - very suitable for a large family car. Not too flashy, but not boring either. And only banal taillights give out similarities with German donors, let alone a Volkswagen Golf or Audi A3 - judge for yourself.

At first glance, the Seat's interior looks even more interesting than that of the "Germans" - spectacular, slightly inflated lines, creating a separate cockpit around the driver, resemble BMW or even Audi R8 models. That's just the quality of the plastic pumped up - on the entire front panel it is absolutely rigid, although it looks very attractive, creating some illusion of carbon. I like such an interior, only it does not fit well with the status of "close relative of Audi", and the price of the car obliges the manufacturer to take the interior trim more seriously. Indeed, for the 42,000 dollars that dealers ask for a tested car with a set of additional options, it is quite possible to choose a well-equipped Audi A4 Avant or Volkwagen Touran wagon with a similar power engine and a comparable list of options.

Having taken the driver's seat in any of the Seat of the Lion / Toledo / Altea series, you immediately rest your gaze on the sporty bright red illumination of the parting panel. As it should be in a sports car, the central place is occupied by the tachometer, and to the right of it is the speedometer. Moreover, the hands of both devices in the zero position look vertically downward - another tribute to Italian design. The steering column switches are overloaded in German: they are hung with the on-board computer and cruise control. It is even less convenient to use a radio with a navigation function, which has not yet been adapted for Russia. Fortunately, the radio, as well as 17-inch wheels and headlights, are additional options that can be discarded and significantly saved. But I was pleasantly surprised by the range of adjustment of the driver's seat - it allows you to choose between a high bus landing or a low, sporty one. Moreover, both are very comfortable and do not create any problems on a long journey.

In comparison with the usual Seat Altea, the XL version has added 187 mm in length, but only due to the rear overhang. The length of the wheelbase and, consequently, the space for rear passengers have remained unchanged, and in this parameter Seat does not reach the promised Extra-Large. It is quite free here for two, but without much scope, and the massive central tunnel will interfere with the legs of the third passenger. Recall that Altea XL can be all-wheel drive, then the FreeTrack prefix appears in its name.

But the trunk is really huge. Thanks to the sliding rear sofa, its volume varies from 532 to 635 liters, and if the rear sofa is folded down, it can carry up to 1604 liters of luggage. In the class of 5-seater compact vans, this is one of the best indicators. Theoretically, it would even be possible to place a third row of seats here, as is done in the Volkswagen Touran, only the shape of the roof of the Altea is not very suitable for those sitting in the gallery.

It turns out that the choice of XL is justified primarily for those buyers who are going to use Altea for summer cottages or long-distance travel with a large amount of equipment - for urban needs a more compact “just-Altea” is better suited - it has exactly the same interior, and will park more convenient.

On the road, the Altea XL showed itself from the best side - the tall body perfectly listens to the steering wheel, and the electric power steering is completely close to ideal. In the parking lot, the steering wheel is absolutely weightless, and with increasing speed, it is filled with reactive force. The suspension is perfectly adapted to Russian roads - moderately stiff, perfectly absorbs body roll, preventing any swinging or breakdowns. In this regard, Seat really shows its similarity with the Audi A3, which, meanwhile, is not much different from the VW Golf ...

The power unit is also well known - we tested it on the A3, and it is quite suitable for family needs, but sometimes it annoys the thoughtfulness of the “automatic”, which seems to be confused in its six gears. The drivetrain, tuned for fuel-efficient driving, strives to engage the last sixth step as soon as possible, any attempt to accelerate causes a second hitch. This problem can be solved by activating the sports mode, which is great for city driving, but annoying with increased noise outside the city.

Returning the Altea XL to the Seat dealer, I would like to sincerely wish the sellers good luck. Altea XL with a basic low-power 102-horsepower 1.6-liter engine costs $ 26,490, and for light-alloy wheels, climate control, rain and light sensors and a number of small options you will have to pay another 1,500. The list of equipment will be quite sufficient, but the engine ... A more reasonable 150-horsepower version with a 2-liter engine and automatic transmission costs 34,990 dollars. And for daredevils there is a 163-horsepower version of 1.8 TFSI with a 6-speed "mechanics" for 32,990 dollars. At such prices, it is still difficult to hope for large-scale sales. Undoubtedly, there will be enthusiasts who will like the striking design of Walter de Silva, but there will hardly be many of them. That is why Seat is already considering the possibility of revising prices downward. If the car drops in price by at least 2000-3000 dollars, it will be possible to speak about the appearance of a “people's Audi”, which will successfully occupy the niche of “people's Volkswagen”, recently freed up by the significantly increased price of Skoda.

SEAT Altea XL, 2007

I bought the car quite by accident. Was available in the salon. What else I wanted or had to wait, or it came out more expensive. As a result, I was satisfied with the car during operation. And still there is no desire to change the SEAT Altea XL, although before that, usually more than 2 years I did not keep one car. I don’t dwell on one brand, there were different ones: Japanese, German, and “French”. Fuel consumption still does not correspond to the passport data. In summer, the average is about 7, in winter 9. If you want and slowly on the track, you can meet 5.5. During the run, there were no expenses (except for maintenance), although I am not a neat owner: I have to carry different pieces of iron and carry a trailer. Every spring I give it to cleaning and polishing, and SEAT Altea XL before summer is as good as new. Under the warranty, I changed the seat heating, the passenger one burned out immediately after the end of the warranty period, I have not changed it until now - I don’t go there myself. I would like more speakers, but what to expect from a 105 strong diesel engine. Although I like the fact that when the car is loaded, the dynamics does not deteriorate significantly. I really like the stability of the SEAT Altea XL on the track and cornering - it stands on the road like a glove, the feeling of the car is perfect, it is controlled pleasantly. I did not notice the difference between the electric power steering and the hydraulics. Sailing from oncoming cars is not felt. Not afraid of rutting. The payoff for this is a low stance and a rather stiff suspension, although it does not cause discomfort. I drove 1200 km in one sitting, there was no particular fatigue. Red illumination at night does not irritate, turn it down or turn it off does not cause desire. The car is well suited for every day and for family vacations.

Advantages : spaciousness. Stability on the road. The design is not like everyone else's. Reliability. Clear checkpoint.

disadvantages : wide uprights at the front. The plastic of the front panel is easily scratched. The rear window gets dirty instantly.

SEAT Altea XL, 2007

This car: Seat Altea XL 1.6 manual transmission 2007, bought in April 2007, drove 9 thousand, I can't say anything definite. Sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't. Many options: cruise control, ABS, traction control, heated seats, rain sensor, separate climate control, folding mirrors. The music, in my opinion, is very good, you can't remember everything at once. Now about the car - it "dulls" when accelerating, especially in 2nd gear, and when the climate control is on, it does not drive at all, only at speed it is imperceptible. When overtaking on the highway, there are not enough "horses" of them only 102. Every year I go to Russia, to the village SEAT Altea XL pleased me at speed on the highway and on fishing trips, the road holds amazingly, there is practically no roll at turns, everyone clings to the road wheels, the track runs without throws to the side. At 150 km / h, the speed is not felt at all. The trunk is very roomy, the cabin is full of space, there is a lot of legroom in the back. But the noise insulation is poor, at speed the noise of the wheels is very clearly audible, but not annoying. The engine noise of the SEAT Altea XL is almost inaudible. The average consumption from buying a car is 8.5 liters per 100 km, in the city from 8-10.5 liters, in the morning and without heavy traffic I drive 12 km in 20 minutes and the consumption is 8 liters, but in traffic jams all 10-11 liters. On the highway, when picking up speed, the consumption is large (more than in a Ford Scorpio with 120 "horses"). At 140 km / h consumption is 9 - 10 liters. And at 90 - 120 km / h it is very economical. Very thin coat of varnish, thin coat of paint. In general, I have no definite opinion about the SEAT Altea XL. The cabin is cozy.

Advantages : good road holding at speed. Roomy.

disadvantages : poor insulation. Do not get to wipe the front wipers.

SEAT Altea 4 Fritrek

Year of issue: 2013

Engine: 2.0 (211 HP) Checkpoint: A6

I will not repeat myself, in all the reviews the refrain is: "the stitch knocks everyone down!" It really is. I installed the first stage from APR, 265 mares, about 6 seconds from zero to 100 km / h. The dynamics have improved. I would call Seat "a car - a provocateur", or have already heard a lot about its nature, or its appearance does not inspire authority, but the majority is trying to overtake, to assert itself, or something. You have to grudgingly crush the slippers to the floor - and everything falls into place at once!

Seat Altea XL 1.9 TDI

Year of issue: 2013

Engine: 1.9

The car is just super, I don't understand why there are no sales in Russia. We have one of the best-selling cars in Austria, I bought it in November. The engine is not heard at all, I have a turbodiesel, a start-stop system, the economy is impressive. Everything is done at a high professional level, plus the price is 4 thousand euros lower than Golf, all spare parts are from Golf. Before that, there was Seat Altea, in 4.5 years I traveled 90,000 km, changed two bulbs on the taillights and that's it. If you need a reliable Volkswagen - take it. I was not mistaken, this is all Volkswagen, only of the Spanish assembly.

SEAT Altea FreeTrack 4

Year of issue: 2012

Engine: 2.0

Passed 8000 km. Explosive character, clearly holds the road, no complaints about the quality of the car. Passenger LCD monitor, rain sensor, talking computer are nice things in the car. The clearance is sufficient for the city and summer cottages. Minus one - soft suspension, you have to drive carefully through the speed bumps, as there is a property to swing. The comfort is peculiar, the style is more reminiscent of a sports car. An incomparable DSG box, many functions are duplicated on the steering wheel. The car pulls a score of 9 out of 10. I recommend purchasing.
