Also noteworthy is the fact that with the general Japanese tendency to increase the external dimensions, the Legacy Wagon retained the same body dimensions. The third generation of this model was produced exclusively in an all-wheel drive version and was equipped with engines with a volume of 2 liters and above.


Dropping the 1.8-liter trim levels, the new-generation Legacy Wagon prioritizes high power, dynamics, safety and driving pleasure, demonstrating the best performance of all-wheel drive station wagons. Of course, inexpensive modifications offered only the most necessary minimum (air conditioning, hydraulic booster, power accessories, fog lights, "molding"), but everything changed with an increase in the level of equipment - the car received climate control, an electric sunroof, roof rails, leather braiding of the steering wheel, interior trim " wood grain ”, leather interior, electric front seats, CD-player. One of the best trims of the generation is the 3.0 Blitzen 6, the result of collaboration with Porsche Design, who have developed unique details (wheels, body kit, interior) and body colors. And the GT-B version deserves attention as an extended sports variant with Bilstein struts, large brake discs and aero kit that reduces wind noise and improves aerodynamic performance.

The third generation Legacy Wagon uses new, improved engines and chassis. The most powerful motors are 260 and 280 hp. are installed on highly popular GT modifications. Somewhat later, modifications were added, complete with 2.5- and 3-liter naturally-aspirated engines with a capacity of 170 and 220 hp, while the 3-liter configuration uses the well-proven flat-six engine with a horizontal arrangement of six cylinders. Also noteworthy are the unpretentious two-liter aspirated - SOHC with a capacity of 137 hp. and DOHC with 155 hp. with a variable valve timing system. Virtually all Legacy Wagon models offer manual and automatic transmission options, with the exception of the 250T, which uses automatic transmission only.

To provide the Legacy Touring Wagon with the best ride quality, the rear suspension is multi-link, providing ample travel, stiffness and at the same time a compact size, which is important for the required cargo space. The front suspension is the usual shock absorber struts. The GT-B and 250T-B versions use, as already noted, Bilstein sport struts, providing a high degree of balance and increased handling. In addition, the suspension of the sports modifications is lightened by forged aluminum levers to reduce unsprung masses. And, of course, do not forget about the modifications with air suspension (250T), which allows you to adjust the size of the ground clearance.

The standard for all trim levels is the presence of front airbags, ABS, front belts with pretensioners and load limiters, as well as optional side airbags. In more expensive trim levels, there are child seat mountings, xenon headlights, VDC system, vehicle dynamics control, which, in combination with AWD and ABS systems, made it possible to further increase safety. The body structure has better rigidity and is surrounded by an annular frame with a larger cross-section to reduce cab deformation in a collision. A newly designed wiper with improved performance is installed to improve visibility in rain.

Among the Legacy right-hand drive station wagons offered on the market, 2-liter modifications prevail, mainly with atmospheric engines, but those who are focused on "turbo" have a choice. In general, the Legacy Touring Wagon is an excellent example of a family station wagon, characterized by high comfort and spaciousness, and even with all-wheel drive. Basic versions with low-power engines show good economy thanks to their horizontally opposed motors. And finally, all Legacy for Russia will be supplied straight from Japan, which should once again become a guarantee of the phenomenal reliability of the car.

Of course, if the question arises of what to buy a Subaru or Toyota, each consumer will decide independently. But I think Subaru offers a more interesting car, though somewhat more expensive.

It's a dream, but you shouldn't forget about a sedan either. It is not so versatile (sorry for the involuntary pun), and the ground clearance is less - 155 mm versus 200 for the "Outback". But in everyday life such a set should be enough for the eyes.

Whoever is lacking, and "Outback" for some reason is not interesting, can look at an intermediate version - a simple Legacy station wagon, not an Outback. It sits lower, does not look so brutal, but the trunk of 528 liters already significantly dominates against the background of the sedan 464 liters.

The Legacy-not-Outback also has a more varied line of motors (4, not 2), there is plenty to choose from, taking into account the budget. The drive is like the brother's station wagon, only full. It is especially worth watching, perhaps, for the CV joints anthers. Because the rubber bands are cheap, but the "grenades" themselves are not. Not so long ago, I sold and just turned up successfully the senior Subaru Legacy III - a real monster with a turbine. An excellent, powerful and well-controlled car. If before that all sorts of BMWs bypassed me from time to time on straight sections, then even AMG cannot always “compete” with Legacy (by the way, I drive only by the rules of the road). The speed is usually no more than 100 km per hour, so, although I keep it even at any turn (thanks for this to the boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive system). In the city "eats" up to 15 liters per hundred, if you press the pedal on the floor or get stuck in traffic jams (and we have traffic jams around the clock, so to speak). If you steer gently and calmly (which is very uncharacteristic for a car with a turbocharged engine for 260 "horses"), then you can keep within 11 liters per hundred. Original parts are not expensive, they are also no problem to find.

Advantages : a great, powerful and well-controlled car.

I have owned a Subaru Legacy III generation for 11 months. I will try to evaluate the car as accurately as possible. Great seats, comfortable support. The climate works, which is good news. No cup holders - a problem, there is not enough space for all sorts of little things. When driving, bumps are felt, regardless of what kind of rubber is, but so far no one has complained. There is enough space in the rear seats for both adults and children. In the parking lots there is a place to frolic and climb (daughter 3 years old, son 9 years old). The Subaru Legacy III holds the road well, confidently. I tried to bring it in in the winter - completely manageable. Aligns without problems with a single movement of the steering wheel. There is a special system for dynamic distribution of efforts. The first walked along the highway after a snowfall (20-25 cm), paved the path, the rest followed me and KAMAZ trucks on the right one after another. But in the forest on the lake - left the bumper. Bottom line, the car is only for the city. Off-road is a speed bump, nothing more. When you understand this, you stop demanding from him the conquest of rural roads. The steering wheel is nice, not soft, not too hard, in general, some kind of pleasant. Doesn't like the rut. We have to leave it, shifting to the right or to the left. There are enough speakers, sometimes it's nice to rush off with a traffic light first. Of course, it is no longer a rival to the new cars, but there is still enough enthusiasm. You still feel confident. On overtaking enough in any range. It doesn't press into the seats, like on a fighter plane, but in the stream you can go one of the fast cars. Bottom line: a good, confident, reliable friend.

Advantages : reliability, usability, stability on the road, increased cross-country ability, balanced dynamic characteristics.

I bought a Subaru Legacy III with a mileage of 52,000 km (I checked it at an authorized service, according to those states they said it was). I drove 20,000 km on it. During this time I changed only "consumables": oil, filters, pads - the time has come. Due to the condition of our roads, stabilizer struts can be attributed to consumables, and candles because of gasoline. Now the rear shock absorber seems to be dying. Yes, I changed the drive oil seals in the front differential ("sweated"). I will say right away - miracles do not happen and you have to pay for everything: one oil in the car is about 15 liters: engine, gearbox, 2 differentials. Rear arches make noise when driving, especially on gravel. Low ground clearance (GX equipment - spoilers in a circle). High fuel consumption. Brooding box. Poor insulation. Rigid ride - low profile tires 205/50/16 in summer. But when you get behind the wheel, you get pleasure, the Subaru Legacy III goes like on rails, it doesn't matter if there is snow, water or asphalt under the wheels. The handling is excellent, the car allows a lot, but the main thing is not to overdo it. I want the next Subaru again. I drove the same, but 2-liter, eats less gasoline, accelerates a little weaker, a little more clearance. In principle, it is more practical.

Advantages : manageability. Dynamics.

disadvantages : fuel consumption. Automatic transmission.
