The updated compact crossover Mitsubishi ASX was presented at the New York Auto Show in the spring of 2017. And already in the fall, its sales in Russia began, or rather, resumed. The model has undergone subtle changes ... why?

By and large, maybe it was not worth changing anything in it. As we know from the famous advertising video, Japanese cuisine is balanced, so the representative of the Japanese car industry with three diamonds on the emblem is also balanced, there is nowhere better. On the one hand, it is compact, on the other, it is roomy, as they say, more inside than outside. Place it next to the Russian LADA XRay and you will see that the two models are very close in size. But how much more spacious in the "Japanese"! I will not compare the "numbers", I will just give my measurements. The width of the ASX cabin at the rear is 137 cm, the front is 146 cm, the distance "behind me" is 26 cm. The XRay cabin is clearly smaller in all dimensions.

But the two cars are now similar in design: the ASX has chrome inserts on the front bumper - "boomerangs", very reminiscent of Iksreevs. Also in the front bumper are now integrated vertical strips of LED running lights. LED steel and headlights, slightly reshaped. The rear bumper has changed, the updated crossover can be easily distinguished by a kind of lining in its lower part.

In general, the car has retained well-balanced proportions, but, unfortunately, this betrays a sad fact: the company saved on updates. The model obviously lacks brightness, "zest", thanks to which it would stand out among a considerable number of similar competitors. One cannot shine among them with chrome on the bumper, and pseudo-ventilation stickers on the fenders only emphasize "age": these have long been out of fashion. The new body color - Alloy Silver - in my opinion, only makes the car look old. The exclusive turquoise color, developed specifically for the first generation ASX, suited him much better. This color scheme was called "kawasemi", which is the Japanese name for a kingfisher bird, painted by nature in this color.

There is speculation that the manufacturer deliberately minimized updates in order to introduce a completely new ASX with more fanfare in the not too distant future. But this is just a guess.

In fact, the compact crossover is not that old, the concept car dates back to 2007, the serial production of the model started in 2010. Updates then happened more than once, but the model remained well recognizable. The Japanese firm's neat, neat box body definitely succeeded externally and, despite its relatively small dimensions (length - 4.3 m), turned out to be very spacious inside. Will this recognizable silhouette continue in the future? It seems unlikely. The alliance with Nissan is likely to bring the ASX's design closer to the Qashqai environment. In general, this is also not bad, but the originality of the model will disappear.

Now they just tried to embellish it, but how successful? Chrome trims for exterior door handles date back to the 90s of the last century. However, the maximum set of Instyle (about 1.5 million rubles) stands out not only for this. Its shiny handles feature black keyless entry buttons. It also shines with LED headlights.

But the salon, as they say, does not shine ... There are few changes in it, although they are noticeable. A multimedia system with a 7-inch color screen and a single control knob appeared here - the display is fully touch-sensitive. It has few functions (the photographs of the ASX for foreign markets show a much more advanced device). And it's still nice. There is also a rear-view camera, although its "peephole" is easily soiled to full invisibility.

The slightly reshaped center console and the new arrangement of the cup holders in the center tunnel can be overlooked. But the leather variator selector handle is clearly visible. Finishing materials have become better, more noble. True, a well-assembled interior does not free you from the thought of retro style. Everything here is too traditional, without the slightest modernism, which is not so much a necessity in terms of practicality as a requirement of the time. Do you want to be successful in the market? Learn to constantly update, at least fake. Today, the trend is brightness, unusual interior design, if you want - space "motives". ASX in this regard is very "down to earth". And the devices of a completely new test variant resemble a very "run" copy. Is it really so? No, just someone turned down the tidy backlight to dim.

The on-board computer is also a hello from the past. He has a minimum of functions. The graphics are logical to the limit (the device is similar to the "Outlander" one), but I would like to read more "news" on this screen. But the ASX interior cannot be blamed for squeakiness, even when driving off-road. The only "cricket" was put here ... in the dealership. Extraneous sound comes from under the lining of the left A-pillar, on which the security LED has appeared.

The three-spoke multifunction steering wheel is an absolute plus. Climate control (also available only in the maximum version of Instyle) is controlled by a standard type of round knobs, nothing new here. The front seats (in the top - leather), in general, please both in size and a sense of lateral support. The 137-centimeter width of the rear sofa may appeal to three passengers. Parts of the back of the sofa are folded, thus forming a flat floor, and the volume of the trunk increases from the nominal 384 liters to 1219 liters, that is, three times. The loading height is 75 cm, there is no threshold at the trunk. Under the raised floor there is a dokatka spare wheel.

Torque distribution

There are two engine options for the updated Mitsubishi ASX, both with the proprietary MIVEC variable valve timing system. The 1.6-liter gasoline engine develops 117 hp. from. power and 154 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. The second gasoline unit is both "larger" (2.0 liters) and more powerful: 150 liters. from. and 197 Nm. A diesel crossover with a 4N13 engine (Euro-5, DOHC, MIVEC, Common Rail, variable geometry turbine) is not supplied to our country: it is believed that the quality of our fuel is insufficient for it.

With a two-liter gasoline engine, the crossover accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 11.7 seconds, and although this figure is not impressive, in fact, this car cannot be blamed for the lack of dynamics. He's a real zest! Moreover, despite the fact that the passport torque is reached at 4200 rpm, a powerful increase in thrust can be felt already at 2000 rpm.

The updated Mitsubishi ASX is built on the proprietary GS platform. MacPherson struts are used in the front suspension, and a set of transverse levers in the rear. Brakes - disc front and rear. The steering gear is with electric booster. The steering wheel, by modern standards, is "long": almost three and a half turns from lock to lock.

The engine and transmission control system (here the variator) is sensitive to the driver's mood. If he is in a hurry and drowns the gas pedal, the response of the car is accelerated. With a relatively calm pace of movement, the thrust in the operating speed range develops smoothly, without picking up.

The variator also changes gears evenly, without noticeable jolts. Manual mode becomes available by pressing any of the paddle shifters at any moment of movement. Automation will not allow erroneous switching up or down. Does it make sense to use manual mode to improve overclocking? In the case of the 150-horsepower ASX, yes. In D mode, the vehicle accelerates from 80 to 120 km / h in approximately 8 seconds. In fifth gear, this time is increased to 12 s, in fourth gear it is reduced to 7 s. The acceleration is evident.

During acceleration, the engine does not "growl", and in general, relative silence reigns in the cabin at high speed. The oncoming air flow begins to make noise only at 120-130 km / h, and even then it is not too intrusive. Pebbles on the wheel arches do not pound. In theory, huge exterior mirrors should degrade aerodynamics, but I would not change them to smaller ones. There is no standard system for tracking "blind" zones in the ASX arsenal, but you can get it for an additional fee.

Naturally, the car does not control the lane markings, does not steer into the lane. This is the lot of more expensive models, although such functions are becoming cheaper and more accessible. Perhaps one will appear on the newest ASX (as it became known, its premiere is scheduled for 2020). In the meantime, the crossover, and without it, demonstrates stability on straight high-speed sections, does not require gripping the steering wheel. And maneuvers in a stream with not so noticeable rolls. And quickly, which is not expected from the relatively "long" steering gear.

Unfortunately, the side mirrors do not help to keep the front door windows clean from dirt in slushy weather. It gradually dries up and forms a gray opaque layer along the bottom of the windows. And the glass of the fifth door becomes soiled to complete invisibility (there is, of course, a "wiper"), and the spoiler, perhaps, only aggravates the situation. A lot of dirt also gets to the rear-view camera lens.

High efficiency is not the "horse" of a two-liter Japanese crossover, but you can count on a reasonable consumption of 7.5 liters of gasoline per 100 km when driving on the highway without breaking the speed limit. The city indicator is about 11 liters. Important note: the engine easily "digests" 92nd gasoline. This is a good trump card for Mitsubishi crossovers.

We don't ride on three wheels

It so happened that I read the instruction manual for the ASX model after returning from an off-road trip. No, in general, we managed to figure out all the systems without prompting, in fact, in the thick Manual I was interested in only one point: the indication of all-wheel drive modes. I didn't find what I needed. It was necessary to find out at what speed the 4WD LOCK symbol on the instrument panel is disabled. At 40 km / h and even slightly higher, it still burned, I had to turn it off by pressing the mode selection button. The Management did not reveal this secret to me.

And so - everything is clear without him. Modes of the proprietary all-wheel drive Multi-Select 4WD transmission are changed by pressing the button "in a circle": 2WD - 4WD AUTO - 4WD LOCK - 2WD, etc. The instruction recommends using the 4WD AUTO position when driving on hard surfaces in difficult weather conditions (snow, slush), and use the 4WD LOCK mode off-road. And try not to skid, and also not to go down steep slopes. In general, after the fact, I learned that I acted strictly contrary to the recommendations of the company, because I was crawling along the hills just from the heart. The chosen location provided me with a lot of slopes of varying degrees of steepness, and, I must say, the car coped with all the obstacles with confidence. And where he could not cope, we "retreated" with him in time, and the tests ended without losses.

Known in Russia under the name ASX (the abbreviation stands for Active Sport X-over), the compact crossover from Mitsubishi overseas is called Outlander Sport. Not to be confused: the Sport prefix in our market is carried by the larger Outlander, equipped with a three-liter 230 hp gasoline engine. from. The American version of the ASX, in contrast to the Russian one, can have an "Outlander" 2.4-liter engine with a capacity of 170 hp under the hood. from. paired with a variator.

So, by directing the crossover to a series of steep, low bumps, I easily achieved a diagonal hanging. But it was not it that prevented us from moving forward, but the fact that the front right wheel rested against a depression in front of a thick tree root. The car did not take this step. Turning off the stabilization and traction control system did not help: after slipping, the crossover simply doused itself up to the very roof with fans of sand, but did not move forward. I had to give up and go around the obstacle along a less steep route.

On the next descent, he hung out again, and strongly, which I did not expect at all. As well as the fact that the doors of the car in this position began to close a little worse, in contrast to the horizontal plane. But the company stated that the torsional rigidity of the body after restyling increased. But the crossover rolled down without difficulty, after which it easily climbed onto the opposite slope of the ravine. Here, during the test, a front-wheel-drive crossover of the Korean company went on strike a few months ago. "Japanese" is not a competitor to him in design, but it is close in price, and I would rather vote with a ruble for an all-wheel drive transmission, even if the cars had changed countries of origin. In general, it is clear that even with a great love of fishing and spending time in nature, you do not get off-road very often, besides, you usually plan its possible "heaviness" depending on what kind of car is under you. But what a pleasure it is - to boldly, confidently climb such slopes, relatively harmless ravines! I would have known that I would be so lucky with the weather - I would have brought a mountain bike with me. True, perhaps, he would have been cramped in the ASX trunk even with the second row of seats folded.

Well, if the opposite slope of the ravine is flowers, then maybe climb up along the same route along which you went down? The first attempt fails: the car stops, hitting the left front wheel in the recess, which, during the descent, provoked a diagonal hanging. We skid, but not for long, and give up. I turn on the inter-axle clutch lock - it does not help. Covering itself with sand, the ASX hangs again at the level of this notch. At the third attempt, with a set of speed, the obstacle was not taken again, there would still be an acceleration, but there is a danger of sliding sideways and scratching the metal of the body on the high edge of the track.

For the fourth time I try to climb up to the right, out of the track, on the grass. And here there is not enough speed, and its set is fraught, again, with the danger of slipping sideways on a large solid stump. No, that's it, we retreat. Taking a last look from below at the uncontained slope, I saw that a Land Cruser Prado drove up to it. You should have waved your hand to the driver, they say, get down, there is not the slightest danger for you here. But I didn't have time - the SUV turned and drove around the ravine on a flat road. Was it really so cool here? Not really ...

Taking a breeze through a bumpy dirt road is, in general, for the ASX, but not for its passengers. The suspension endures, holds the blows, avoiding breakdowns. The rear axle does not tend to lift off the ground in turns and jump to the side. But at the same time, the inside is too hard, even for the driver. More likely to fly out of the seat than to lose control.

As an option, the Mitsubishi ASX offers a Touring Package, which includes additional noise and vibration isolation of the body, a panoramic sunroof, as well as electronic collision avoidance systems, lane control and automatic high / low beam switching.

And, in fact, it is very easy and pleasant to cope with it, if the ground under the wheels is relatively flat and slightly loose. On a sandy surface, the car, a little restrained by the stabilization system, makes perfect circles, regardless of the choice of the transmission mode. Turning off the system is almost the same. The radius of the circles almost does not increase, the rear axle does not blow so much, although it obviously picks up, and fountains of sand from under the wheels grow. Very well controlled car!

Of course, the update of the model, carried out in 2017, is intended to increase interest in it in our market, and in the world too. But, in my opinion, it turned out to be very modest, too economical. Competitors - and the ASX has a dime a dozen of them - have long been flaunting more striking design solutions. So innovations in the appearance of the model, rather, are designed for its adherents, as well as conservatives. This is, in fact, a signal: hurry up to buy the crossover in its current form, so - neat, balanced - it will no longer be. In the future, in its entourage there will certainly appear something too standout, too catchy. This will increase the recognition of the model, since modesty in the market has long been out of value. But the unique "balance" will go away, and with it the old, very favorable prices. Brighter competitors sometimes cost a quarter more, but they don't have all-wheel drive. Here, the 4x4 transmission coexists in a pair with excellent handling, predictable behavior off-road. In my opinion, it is worth sacrificing design. And also on the ASX side - the Japanese assembly.

The Mitsubishi ASX is a small crossover, cute on the outside and quite comfortable on the inside, well suited for both a girl's driver and a small family. Before the appearance of ASX in this class of cars, practically the only leader was, but Mitsubishi managed to compete with it.

Externally, the car turned out to be quite spectacular; in the front of the car, a trapezoidal grille (Jet Fighter style) is used. And the sloping roof top not only lends a sportier appearance, but also improves aerodynamics. There is also a 1.8-liter (150 hp) turbodiesel in the Mitsubishi ASX range, but cars with such an engine are practically not found in the secondary market, since they were not officially sold here. In the first cars with a 1.6 engine, engine detonation is quite common, and it occurs due to the fact that the fuel at our gas stations is of dubious quality. Another problem that concerns only the weakest engine is the freezing of the crankcase gas pipe, as a result, oil squeezes out from under the oil dipstick (in 2012, the manufacturer eliminated this drawback).

The 1.8-liter engine has similar disadvantages to the Mitsubishi Outlander engines. The most common problem is the alternator belt. The fact is that in some modes the belt began to rattle unpleasantly, this is due to the fact that the generator does not have an overrunning clutch. You can solve this problem yourself, you need to buy a slightly larger belt and lay it a little differently (there are a huge number of detailed diagrams on the forums).

As for the most powerful engine, it is one of the five most reliable power units, according to many reputable European publishers. With proper maintenance, its resource is more than 500,000 kilometers. As for the timing drive, all types of motors have a chain drive. This unit, like the power units, has a fairly large robotic resource, and does not require special attention to itself up to 300,000 km.

Transmission

Mitsubishi ASX is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission of its own production "", or a V-belt variator with a metal pushing belt and a torque converter. Before restyling, a Jatco serial 2 variator was installed, and after that - a Jatco CVT8. Cars with a manual transmission are quite rare, as for reliability, there are no complaints about the operation of this box, and there is nothing to complain about here. But the variator cannot boast of such reliability, and during operation it can bring surprises, most often this transmission gives problems to owners of cars with four-wheel drive.

And if you want the variator to last as long as possible without breakdowns, change the oil every 50,000 km and not for any, but only for the one recommended by the manufacturer. Also, the transmission must not be allowed to overheat. The first signs that the variator will soon have to be changed are a distinct metallic sound during acceleration; the car keeps high revs, but no acceleration occurs. If a light on the console comes on, this means that the variator is overheated and needs to be allowed to cool down a little. When choosing a used Mitsubishi ASX with a variator, you need to be very careful, since the repair of this unit will cost $ 1,500.

The all-wheel drive system is implemented using an electromagnetic clutch that does not require maintenance. In the event of active wheel slip, this unit quickly overheats, the indicator on the dashboard will inform you about this. If overheating has occurred, then it must be allowed to cool completely.

The appearance of the new version of the Mitsubishi ASX 2019 crossover differs from its predecessor only in details. The body design has been refined in terms of style renewal. Analysis of the photo shows that the most changes are in the front of the body.

  • Externally, the car is easily identified by the branded X-shaped chrome grille, wedge-shaped front optics, a complex bumper configuration with built-in air intakes, running lights and fog lights.
