The only intrigue is whether the younger Cross Country will have hybrid versions of the T6 Twin Engine AWD (340 hp) and T8 Twin Engine AWD (390 hp), available for the usual "sixty".

However, Volvo still has enough time to talk about the details: production at the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden will begin in winter, and the start of accepting orders in Europe is expected in early 2019. Volvo's Moscow office told Autoreview that the V60 Cross Country will certainly appear in Russia, but the exact dates have not yet been determined.

What is Cross Country? This is a "package" that increases the ground clearance of the conventional Volvo V60 station wagon by 65 mm (up to 196 mm), expands the range of paints and wheel options. It lacks the ultra-fashionable touch screen, which would be useful for navigating (41,500 rubles). Instead, you have to turn the knobs. The situation is not the best with the speed of the navigator - loading routes takes too long.

In terms of practicality, the Volvo V60 Cross Country seems to be much better, although it is inferior to its main competitors. There is plenty of head and legroom for rear passengers, but the Audi A4 Allroad and Volkswagen Passat Alltrack have even more headroom due to the longer wheelbase.

The "Swede" loses to the "Germans" in the capacity of the trunk. Volvo is content with a modest 430 liters for the class, while the A4 Allroad offers 490 liters, and the Passat Alltrack - 650 liters. The increased ground clearance led to a lower loading threshold. The disadvantage is compensated for by the rear sofa, which folds in one movement and forms a flat surface with the boot floor.

After enjoying the admiration of passers-by and rear passengers, it's time to hit the road. But first, you should choose one of the three themes of the graphic instrument panel (35,300 rubles). Let's dwell on the blood red shade. And although it does not affect driving performance in any way, it perfectly matches the sporty spirit of the front seats. True, against this background, an unpleasant contrast is made by the loud noise of a 5-cylinder turbodiesel and vibrations on the steering wheel. Fortunately, at high speeds, the engine emits more pleasant sounds and practically does not give out accessories to the diesel engine.

Leaving the parking lot, you have to peer with surprise at the image on the screen from the rear view camera (36,300 rubles). The picture does not convey the real situation behind the car at all. Judging by the mirrors, there is still a lot of space, but the camera suggests otherwise. Fortunately, the parking sensors are not overly active. Parking maneuvers are somewhat complicated by a heavy steering wheel, but such settings are more preferable for active driving.

Suspension Volvo V60 Cross Country easily swallows "bumps" without making any unpleasant sounds. The only thing that makes itself felt are 19-inch rims. Travel time is brightened up with great music from the speakers of the optional PREMIUM SOUND audio system from Harman Kardon (126,400 rubles). It effectively suppresses loud engine operation at low revs.

The interior becomes even louder when the gas pedal is fully depressed to the floor. But this is a completely different kind of noise. The dynamic turbodiesel D4 sounds like a thoroughbred gasoline aspirated. It's a shame that only 4-cylinder units will soon remain in Volvo.

A brief moment of oblivion, and fuel consumption begins to increase rapidly. The average result during the test was 9.4 liters. It should be noted that 85 percent of the time the car moved in the city. The diesel engine is paired with a 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The machine switches gears too late, even in a calm environment. When overtaking a gear change, you have to wait an incredibly long time. His task, above all, is to look good. And Volvo copes with this task with dignity.

The Volvo V60 Cross Country is a contradictory car that wants to be all in one. As an all-rounder, he has mediocre capabilities, as his rivals are capable of more. The heavy steering wheel is in perfect harmony with the thoroughbred sound of the engine at high revs, but the characteristic engine noise at low revs and the high seating position at the wheel suppress all attempts to hint at "sportiness". This is a very strange mixture in a very elegant package. Despite its shortcomings, the V60 Cross Country brings fond memories for a long time.

As if it was these touches that the V60 lacked to complete harmony of its appearance!

Although, of course, you cannot hide the years: the interior, for example, will appeal to a retrograde rather than a progressive user. I may approve of the lack of touch controls, but in general there are comments on ergonomics: control of the on-board computer on the steering column switch, four equal-sized rounds for climate control, media system and music on the center console and a not very intelligible multimedia menu - all this somewhat confuses confused. However, the merits of the Cross Country clearly prevail.

Four-wheel drive in the case of a station wagon is here for a surcharge, but we came across the most "tasty" equipment - with a turbodiesel, all-wheel drive transmission and a classic 6-speed automatic. It is noteworthy that a 5-cylinder turbodiesel, as well as an all-wheel drive, is not offered for the "usual" sixty. And in vain, because in such a combination the V60 played with new colors, having acquired, in addition to practicality, several driver notes. The engine, not only is economical (in the combined cycle I got 8-9 liters per hundred), has a pleasant velvet baritone and excellent traction.

And the four-wheel drive "starts" even more! "Haldex" of the fifth generation, even with the stabilization system not disabled, from the heart throws momentum to the rear axle, forcing the V60 to playfully wriggle aft on the ice. But all this, of course, is within reasonable limits - after all, we are in Volvo. But when the "collar" is turned off, the Cross Country transforms even more: under the gas discharge, it goes into a skid with a thrill, and under the addition actively develops it. An excellent device for those who like to skim through the snow in long slides - the XC60 and XC70, similar in cost and construction, are clearly inferior in terms of drive.

However, safety is still above all - I was convinced of this personally at the end of the test drive, having got into a very indicative accident. It was on Friday evening, on the last section of the M4-Don highway at the entrance to Moscow, literally 5 km from the Moscow Ring Road. The last remaining piece of the route, in contrast to the kilometers traveled earlier, was not treated with reagents, which is why it was covered with an even and high-quality layer of ice. Well, what's wrong - for the first time or what? Judging by the concentration of accidents, for many such a turn of the elements came as a surprise, including for the silver Solaris, which dived exactly to the left side of the still virgin V60 body. Later, the driver of the silver fighter admitted to the traffic police that he was first carried into the bump stop, and only then into the innocent Volvo. It has long been known that it is impossible to avoid such cases. Another thing is noteworthy - how "Volvo" calmly maintained its trajectory and direction of movement, not to mention the integrity of the cabin cage. All-wheel drive, the stabilization system, and a well-thought-out body structure helped here. Well done, Volvo, well done! I was lucky this time with the traffic police officer: “Guys, how many times do I repeat, get out of the road! To hell with her, with the car, the main thing is to stay alive! Just now the same victim in an accident walked along the side of the road next to the accident, did not have time to recover, and he was hit by another uncontrolled car ... Step aside, I beg you! "

All in all, despite the incident, and to some extent thanks to it, the V60 CC left the best impressions of itself: it is still a safe Swedish car, whose already good character was pleasantly diversified by all-wheel drive, which made the V60 even more interesting. in management. A car almost devoid of any significant flaws! Although there is one "but": the price of the V60 CC is close to the older brother of the XC 60, and knowing the mores of our buyer, we can assume that he would rather prefer the one that is bigger and more impressive out of the two options.
