The new, fourth generation of the compact SUV Suzuki Jimny 2017-2018 model years is supposed to be assembled in India, where the construction of an assembly line for this model was recently completed. The manufactured cars are planned to be sold not only on the domestic market, but also to export to other countries. The approximate release date of the new Jimny, according to some experts, falls on the second half of 2017, and the premiere may take place in the fall. However, it is already possible to draw preliminary conclusions regarding the appearance of the updated car, which will be borrowed from the iM-4 concept car presented at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

Suzuki Jimny - miniature "robust" with outstanding off-road capabilities

The history of the presented car is rooted in the distant 1968, when the first generation of Jimny was released, which received its current name in 1970. A distinctive feature of the car was the use of a frame body structure, which provided it with high rigidity. At the same time, the installation of an all-wheel drive transmission provided an at first glance "toy" car with incredible cross-country ability.

The next, second generation debuted in May 1981, in which, in addition to the changed appearance, passive safety elements and technical equipment were significantly improved. The production of this modification was carried out until 1998, when the third generation of a miniature SUV entered the market. The body design of the new car has acquired smoother, streamlined outlines, and the ergonomics of the cabin have also been significantly improved. Suzuki designers abandoned the spring suspension system, which was replaced by a more comfortable spring suspension. Powerful engines with improved transmission systems and lower fuel consumption are now available. This required a redesign of the brake system, which changed to a disc for the front axle, with an increased level of efficiency, which is additionally provided by a vacuum booster.

Features and equipment of the new Suzuki Jimny 2017

The Jimny SUV modification presented in the Russian market belongs to the third generation model, which was restyled in 2014. The car received a more intuitive dashboard, which also displays information about the gear engaged and the tire pressure level. The 2017 Suzuki Jimny is equipped with a stability control system in the basic configuration, in accordance with the new requirements of the European Union. The interior has slightly changed, in which wear-resistant materials and eco-leather are used for the upholstery of the seats. The small volume of the luggage compartment can be increased by folding the rear row of seats in a 50x50 proportion.

The gearbox can be installed as a mechanical 5-speed or 4-band automatic, and the car is offered exclusively with an all-wheel drive system. Its work is possible in the following modes:

• 2WD - the torque is transmitted to the rear axle and allows you to move confidently in city conditions, ensuring minimal fuel consumption;
• 4WD - through a pneumatically controlled clutch, the front axle is connected, which allows the car to move confidently on slippery and more difficult road sections;
• 4WD-L - involves the use of a low range of gears to overcome the most difficult road conditions.

The interior of the SUV is made in accordance with the Japanese concept of beauty, which involves the use of calm shades, as well as exceptionally high-quality and practical materials. The seats provide a comfortable fit and have pronounced lateral support. Control devices are combined into a single control unit, improving the perception of the displayed information, and without distracting the driver while driving.

There are few options for the 2017 Suzuki Jimny trim levels (JLX and JLX Mode3), but even in the basic version the car boasts a fairly rich level of equipment. Standard JLX equipment includes the following equipment: ABS, integrated with ESP; front airbags; three-point belts with pretensioners; fastenings for child car seats ISOFIX; mechanically controlled air conditioner; interior heater; front seats with an extensive range of adjustments and heating; rear-view mirrors with electric drive and heating; front fog lights; rear window wiper with washer; power steering; central locking with remote control; 15-inch steel rims; polyurethane steering wheel. What to expect from the next generation Suzuki Jimny 2017?

The fourth generation of the presented car may completely change the exterior design, which will make the exterior of the car more masculine, with a sporty touch. The new Suzuki Jimny will be assembled on a single platform with Baleno and Ignis, while it is planned to use a 1-liter gasoline engine with Boosterjet technology or a 1.4-liter turbodiesel. The all-wheel drive system will not undergo any major changes and will remain the same. Also, the car will retain the frame structure of the body and the existing off-road qualities. Based on the presented concept iM-4, one can judge the overall dimensions of the new car, which will change slightly. The length will remain practically the same and will correspond to 3693 mm, the width will increase to 1709 mm, and, on the contrary, the height will decrease to 1566 mm. The wheelbase will increase significantly and will be 2,438 mm, which will significantly increase the interior space and ergonomics of the cabin. The rims will increase to 18-inches, providing excellent off-road ability. The official representative of Suzuki does not provide more detailed information on the new Suzuki Jimny.

The premiere of the new-generation Jimny is set for July 5, but Suzuki has already published photos of the upcoming SUV on its corporate website, adding some details. How do you like the design?

Interestingly, the pictures show different modifications of Jimny - with left or right steering, with and without wheel arch extensions, with one-color or two-tone bodies. The division is simple: cars without plastic linings are designed strictly for the Japanese market, fit into the regulated dimensions of key cars in order to fall into the preferential tax category. The Jimny with extensions is the international "full-size" version traditionally sold in Japan under the double name Jimny Sierra.

The basic design of the car has been preserved: the new Suzuki Jimny remains an honest frame SUV with two continuous axles (the global version has them wider than the Japanese one), spring suspension, rigidly connected all-wheel drive and a reduction gear in the transfer case. Moreover, it is not the newfangled washer buttons that are responsible for switching the transmission modes, but the old-school lever. However, not only the stabilization system is expected from the electronics, but also the automatic braking assistant.

Angular interior - with analogue instruments and partial rear trim. But in the spirit of the times, a modern media system was prescribed here (like other Suzuki models), and climate control appeared from the comfort elements.

The new Jimny will retain the choice between the five-speed "mechanics" and the old four-speed "automatic". The big Jimny will have an aspirated volume of 1.5 liters (the power has not yet been named), and the Japanese version will retain a Kei-car engine with a working volume of 660 "cubes", the power of which, according to local laws, cannot exceed 64 hp.

Production of the new Suzuki Jimny in Japan has already begun. This model will appear in Russia, approximately at the beginning of 2019.

A three-section frame and a five-section false radiator grille are striking at the first cursory viewing. With the former small dimensions of the body, the radiator has now become even smaller. The same can be said for the front bumper. Actually, this kind of changes made to the design of the car allowed the engineers to install foglights noticeably higher than the area where they were previously deployed.

The hood, as shown in the pictures, turned out to be new. Its opening / closing system has been redesigned, according to journalists. Again, these changes in turn allowed the installation of an additional air intake in the bonnet area.

Honestly, the Japanese could not offer the drivers anything other than the above. And thanks for that, as they say.
