Long test drive Toyota Hilux: third month of ownership. Even a brand new Toyota HiLux will not let you down if you take care of it and cherish it When driving

Winter is fun, and winter in an all-wheel drive diesel car is doubly fun. On the test, Toyota Hilux 8th generation with a diesel engine (177 hp) and a plug-in all-wheel drive.

Having received the car, I called Alexey bolshoy75 and offered to go test Hilux in the fields. The temperature of the ambient air "jumped" from -4 to 0. The snow that fell turned into a heavy sticky mess.

Toyota Hilux all-wheel drive system - classic part-time. The front axle is recommended to be turned on only on slippery surfaces. In normal mode, only the rear wheels are driven. But, in the eighth generation of the pickup in the front differential, an overheating sensor is installed, in winter you can always drive all-wheel drive up to 100 km / h.

In deep snow, when there is inertia, there is always enough traction. But, the VSC stabilization system - slows down when it seems to her that we are going fast. It is completely possible to turn it off in 4L mode (lowering).

We turn off the front-wheel drive, the unloaded rear carries it back and forth, but the inertia of the car and the engine power is enough to move through the snowdrifts.

In the back, it is difficult to cope with active driving in the snow. But GOES!

Turn on the four-wheel drive and drove off! The car drives, but as I wrote, "stabilization" in steep drifts is trying to return the car to its trajectory.

In the most interesting places, the car slowed down. Only "fun went" and pyshshshshsh ... \u003d)

Turning on 4L Here it started.

The relic is always! When there is no stabilization, it rushes like a tank!

He digs snow with his wheels and pushes off the ground \u003d) I'm not kidding at all! And there is.

Toyota Hilux in the base is equipped with a forced locking of the rear axle, the mode is activated only at 4L.
Wet ice under the wheels. This is the middle of a small river. The lock is on - let's go. Scary, but let's go.

In order to understand the Toyota Hilux cross-country ability, I asked Lyokha bolshoy75 to accompany me on the test.
Under the pleasant roar of the diesel engine and the rustle of the radio, we make our way through the fairy forest.

FORCED LOCKING IS THING!
Korobas in manual mode and flooded! \u003d)

Hilux - literally ironing out the snow cover.

Brief summary: Toyota Hilux like it. Well, how can Toyota not like it \u003d) Pleases the consumption of diesel fuel. 9 liters on the highway, 11 in the snow! ELEVEN! To be continued.

Frankly, I didn't think it was possible at all. And even more so, I could not imagine that three months of mostly city life with a Toyota Hilux pickup would pass so quickly. Of course, regular business trips and tests of other cars (the specifics of the profession) allowed Haylax and me to have regular rest from each other, but still I expected a little more fatigue from myself. Haylax, of course, didn't care. It is made of iron.

I wrote about parking problems in the very first review. They, of course, have not gone anywhere, but here Buddhist (or Christian? Or is it Stanislav Jerzy Lec?) Wisdom about the situation and attitude to it came to the rescue. It was not possible to screw parking sonars into the test car, so I just put a rag and gloves in the door pocket, and in my head - the habit of wiping the rear-view camera in any case, including even very uncomfortable ones.

Climate control is single-zone, but there are no complaints about its work

Nikolay Svistun

By the way, gloves are not a superfluous thing for a “highlander”. Without them, it is simply impossible to stay clean after any, even the most innocuous operation with an opening tailgate, and it is difficult to imagine refueling with diesel fuel without "hand protection". The Hilux is not a Range Rover Sport at all, so tankers don't rush to assist the driver. Well, how a drop of diesel fuel on your hands spoils the mood - it's not for me to tell you.

There is also a problem with refueling with other operating fluids. For some reason, the hood of such a large car is devoid of pneumatic stops, so topping up washer fluid is preceded by a multi-stage manipulation with the hood lock and a thin “leg” fixed under it. Okay, let's write it off as the need to simplify as much as possible the design of an unpretentious car by definition. And let's not think about how “unpretentiousness” is combined with leather, a “touchscreen” multimedia system and a price tag of 2,053,000 rubles.

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to take advantage of the main advantage of “Haylax” - I drove on serious off-road only once and exclusively for test purposes. And he was a great surprise for the "discoverers" swarming at the same training ground. Yes, the geometric cross-country ability exceeds my imagination, yes, the lowering row in the transmission can almost never be turned on, and yes - most importantly, after all the mud procedures, it is important not to forget to turn off the four-wheel drive. Because driving on asphalt in hardcore “part-time” (for those who are not in the know, with a rigidly connected front axle) is not useful, and faster than 90 km / h is generally harmful.

All kinds of connectors are enough, there is also a 12-volt socket in the inter-seat box

Nikolay Svistun

In principle, sometimes it was necessary to grab the eternally vibrating hand-out lever in ordinary, “everyday” situations. Once, when parking in reverse, Hilux refused to run over the icy threshold of the garage, so it was necessary to climb a small incline "on all fours." A couple of times "ponizhayka" was needed during the assault on the rather harmless snow parapets. It’s not that it’s not at all possible without it, it’s just clearly more convenient with the included demultiplier.

By the way, even with an empty body, the Hilux demonstrated a very decent ride on off-road. Once I even drove on an off-road track on a dare with a glass of water in my hand. And he spilled almost nothing.

The main change in the life of a person who has become (albeit temporarily) the owner of a pickup or van is that he finds himself in the role of the “best friend” of many, including almost strangers. Bales, boards, bicycles, pit bikes, furniture, tires, wheels, rims with tires - all these wonderful things belonging to friends (and acquaintances of acquaintances) as if they were just waiting for Hilux to be at my disposal. So I can safely recommend buying such a car to those who feel a lack of socialization. And I strongly advise against getting a pickup truck for misanthropes, introverts and sociopaths. Except perhaps in cases of immediate movement to the tundra immediately after purchase.

If you still have to travel in the city, get ready to interact with society. In the head of the representatives of this very society, it turns out, the devil is going on, but without a pickup you will not find this "devil that". You ask to be in the next row culturally, with a "turn signal" - they do not let you in, "push" like a hamlo, with the size - everyone scatters in panic, even the owners of Gelendvagens.

In order not to finally turn into a boor, a huge supply of intelligence and self-discipline is required from the driver of the “Haylax”. It's good that my job doesn't involve moving around the city all the time. Otherwise, the transformation could not have been avoided. And every working day would probably end with the feeling that it was the Hilux that drove me, and not vice versa.

Nikolay Svistun

Well, well, in the mode "home - editorial - still editorial - home" plus infrequent (albeit regular) throws "on the long distance" Hilux proved to be a reliable and efficient partner. True, he never became a friend. And if I had to seriously think about buying a similar technique, I would consider alternatives. For instance…

Volkswagen Amarok. The pickup, invented by the Germans for Latin America, in an all-wheel drive version and with a DSG gearbox, is distinguished by an enviable smoothness and an extremely sleek interior. An excellent option for those who are looking for a pickup as an "image car" and are not going to serious off-road. The price tag, however, bites - almost half a million more expensive than "Haylax" in a similar configuration.

Nissan Navara. It was once considered an "almost luxury" pickup, but time in collaboration with competitors has made adjustments. Now it is just a pickup truck, albeit with good equipment and a price tag of at least 1,433,000 rubles. By the way, "Nissan" has a "truck" and a cheaper one - NP300. At the time of this writing, it could be bought for 953 thousand. Only UAZ and Chinese are more accessible.

Other notable options include the Ranger and Mitsubishi L200. The latter is especially interesting: the Super Select transmission is the best such solution on the market. But both Ford and Mitsu are living out their days waiting for an early replacement. Now we have new models - then we'll see.

I have always been confused by the name Hilux. "High luxury"? It's a pickup truck! High Reliability, "high reliability" - I agree, it is proven. High Endurance is fine too. But the former Hilaxes (they were more often called Hiluxes) did not smell of luxury. Noise, simple materials, mediocre handling ... Meanwhile, buyers of "trucks" are also worried about all this, especially if the price of the car is from one and a half million. The eighth generation of the pickup, the Japanese promised to do better in everything. Did you manage?

ALL OVER AGAIN

Now no one will doubt that not only engineers, but also designers worked on the pickup. I look at the Hilux in the most expensive Prestige version, and these are the ones that were brought to Sakhalin for testing: it diligently fulfills its name, delighting with predatory lines and sparkling with chrome. Small detail: the model name is engraved on the LED headlights. Lux!

The body type is the only thing that resembles the previous, seventh Hilax. The machine rests on a new, reinforced frame with more powerful cross members, galvanized coating and even rounded ribs - to “plow” the soil less.

Previously, Haylax did not have an interior - a cabin. Now - a real Salon! Even in the simplest version of the "Standard", the interior looks decent.

The wheelbase has not changed (3,085 mm), but the body is 70 mm longer and 20 mm wider. The cargo platform is 24 mm longer and 130 mm wider than the previous one, but you can't drive a quadric into it either: in our market, the Haylaxes are only with a double cab.

The length of the leaf springs of the rear suspension has been increased to 1400 mm (+ 100 mm), the attachment points of both the springs and the shock absorbers have been moved, and the shock absorbers themselves are larger than before. All this is designed to reduce vibrations and improve directional stability.

Turbodiesels of the GD (Global Diesel) series with a volume of 2.4 and 2.8 liters replaced the KD engines (2.5 and 3.0 liters). Both are only six forces more powerful (150 and 177 hp), but the increase in torque is solid - 57 and 90 Nm, respectively. Fuel is injected into the cylinders five times per stroke instead of the previous three, and the idle rumble characteristic of a diesel engine is almost gone. This is clearly noticeable when you are standing next to a running car, and is especially felt on the move - the new Hilux has improved noise insulation. Even stones on the arches hardly drum.

The effect would be even more noticeable if the car were equipped with ordinary road tires. But I had to drive not only on asphalt, so the "prestigious" 18 "wheels gave way to 17", with "toothy" A / T tires.

The boxes were added by transfer. The younger engine is now combined with a six-speed manual, the older one with a six-speed automatic. The mechanics are interesting with the iMT system, which regulates the engine speed when changing gears - for more comfortable shifting. Unfortunately, there was no opportunity to travel with her, but on version 2.8 with a gun, I drove pretty much. I liked the automatic transmission: it works smartly, improves efficiency. If we compare the appetites for fuel, then the consumption is about a liter more modest than that of the previous Haylaxes: according to passport data, 7.3–8.5 liters per hundred. On an expedition to Sakhalin, as you might guess, I burned much more - 12-13 liters each!

DESTROY ME!

Previously, Haylax did not have an interior - a cabin. With gray echoing plastic and a huge steering wheel adjustable only in tilt angle. The seats are uncomfortable, the illumination of different colors was annoying ...

Now - Salon! High quality plastic, comfortable seats with extra long cushions. Between them is a large and soft armrest. The driver's seat has an increased height adjustment range. The distance from the backs of the front seats to the rear sofa has grown by 10 mm, the sofa itself also got an armrest and folds in a 60:40 ratio.

The steering wheel is finally adjustable for flight! And the smaller gear selector lever is more comfortable than the previous one.

Spotlight on the 7-inch Toyota Touch 2 multimedia display: a real tablet! Pleasing to the eye and a color 4.2-inch display with animation built into the dashboard. There are now two glove boxes, albeit shallow. In front there are four cup holders, two of them are retractable. And - never before seen in pickups: the engine start button, complementing the keyless entry to the salon!

It looks like the only old part of the new interior is the digital clock. And there is only one reason for criticism - the blue illumination of devices. Not everyone likes it.

At first, I often looked in the rearview mirror to make sure there was a loading platform behind the cab. Am I driving in a pickup truck and not an expensive SUV?

EH, ROAD ...

Bad roads on Sakhalin are represented by poorly rolled graders. The cars in front raise clouds of dust, the steering wheel vibrates, the cabin shakes ... The tremor can be relieved if the speed is increased to 80–100 km / h, but then the rear axle periodically breaks off the trajectory. At such moments, you envy your colleagues who ride the Haylaxes, ballasted with six bags of sand (about 300 kg). This is only a third of the rated carrying capacity, but still the course becomes softer. And the VSC stabilization system helps me to return the car to the trajectory, correcting my, alas, frequent mistakes.

The grader is replaced by stones and rivulets, but this is not a problem for Haylax: according to technical characteristics, the ford depth is 700 mm, 200 mm more than before. It is a pity that there were no such depths on our route.

Old Haylax was surprising in that the travels of his suspensions on the left and right are not the same - 433 and 474 mm, respectively. Now they have been leveled and increased to 520 mm. The ground clearance is 5 mm higher than before, and this is a solid 227 mm. The corners of entry, exit and ramp have become a little more, by several degrees.

From below the units are covered with metal protection from three large casings. To increase the exit angle, the rear underrun bar was hidden under the bumper. But the bumper is chrome-plated, and it becomes vulnerable: if you hook it harder - only a replacement. It's good that the test car was equipped with a towbar: it was the first to take a hit.

And here is the main event in the all-wheel drive transmission: the forced locking of the rear differential is basic equipment! As before, Haylax has permanent rear-wheel drive, and the front ones are connected rigidly. But now a front differential overheating sensor is installed, so you can drive on all-wheel drive at speeds up to 100 km / h - for example, in winter.

The basic equipment also includes the HAC system: it helps when lifting, leveling the travel speed and eliminating rolling. On the Highlax in the top version, there is also a DAC option that holds the car downhill.

In the mud, the A-TRC traction control system helped me a lot. It fixes the slip of the drive wheel, brakes it, allowing more torque to be transmitted to the other wheel. In fact, it replaces the cross-axle lock.

And before the most difficult sections, the leader of the column gave the command to turn on the lowering and lock the rear differential. And the Haylax lane is like a tank - at least as long as the geometry of the machine coped with the "folds of the terrain."

Two pickup trucks from our convoy were pulling ATVs on trailers. These guys came in handy with TSC - the trailer stabilization system: it imperceptibly brakes the wheels and controls the engine thrust, preventing the trailer from spreading left and right. And when maneuvering, a rear view camera helps.

Excellent sound insulation, high-quality materials, high-torque and less voracious motors ... Now it will be clearer for buyers what the luxury is and what they are giving their money for.

Sakhalin island

The presentation of the pickup took place in a very interesting and unusual corner of Russia. Sakhalin is the largest island in the country. It is famous for its varied relief - from low-lying plains to medium-high mountains - and a changeable climate.

Toyota Hilux 7 (Toyota Hilux) is one of the best-selling midsize pickups. In the CIS, cars in a pickup body have always been associated with a small truck, plus, the rather high cost of such a car significantly influenced the low demand for cars in this type of body. However, in recent years the situation has changed dramatically, and pick-up trucks are encountered every year more and more often on our roads, especially versions with a full-fledged cab. Toyota Hilux 7 is considered one of the most popular pickups in our country, therefore, today we will try to find out what disadvantages are inherent in this car, and what you should pay attention to when choosing this model in the secondary market.

A bit of history:

Production of Toyota Hilux began back in 1968, initially, the car was produced as a small truck with a short wheelbase and a two-seater cab. The second generation of the car hit the market in 1973. Compared to its predecessor, the novelty has acquired a more comfortable cabin and has become a little longer. The car, which will be discussed today, is the seventh generation Toyota Hilux, which debuted in 2005. The production of the model was established in four countries at once - Thailand, South Africa, Argentina and Indonesia. Before the start of series production, Toyota decided to prove the endurance and unpretentiousness of the car by making two successful polar expeditions to the North and South Poles.

The seventh generation car is based on the updated ladder frame of the previous versions, but has been significantly increased in size, thanks to which it has become classified as a mid-range pickup. In 2008, an updated version of the car appeared on the market. The main improvement that has come to the car is a new rear seat access system called "Smart Cab", which is used on all double cab pickups. In 2011, a second restyling was carried out, as a result of which the front of the pickup was significantly changed. The cars received a new hood and grille, as well as a bumper and improved front optics. Officially in the CIS, the car has been supplied since 2011 and only with a double cab, until that moment the bulk of the cars were imported from America or Europe. In 2015, the eighth generation entered the market.

Problem spots Toyota Hilux 7 with mileage

One of the main disadvantages of this model is the weak paintwork and the tendency of the body iron to form corrosion. Most often, corrosion appears at the joints of the windshield and the body, the hood and front wheel arches. Also, due to the unsuccessful design of the exhaust system on the wheel carrier, which is integrated into the rear bumper, a large number of rust spots appear very quickly.

Power units

Officially in the CIS, the Toyota Hilux 7 was supplied with two diesel turbocharged engines 2.5 (144 hp) and 3.0 (171 hp). It is not worth waiting for good dynamics from these engines, since the main trump card of these engines is high-torque and efficiency (on average, fuel consumption is 9-11 liters per 100 km). One of the main advantages of Toyota Hilux 7 engines over competitors is that they are unpretentious in terms of fuel quality, but you should not abuse this, since injection pumps and injectors are not cheap. If we talk about the reliability of these motors, then no serious shortcomings were identified in them, since the motors are simple and reliable. Even the timing belt and rollers require replacement no more than once every 120,000 km (according to the regulations, once every 150,000 km).

Also, it is worth noting the rather large resource of the turbocharger, in most cases it nurses more than 200,000 km. The main feature of these power units is the lack of valve lifters, while the clearances need to be adjusted once 80,000 km or as needed. Of the weak points, a small generator resource can be distinguished ( treplacement of the diode bridge is required).

Transmission

For Toyota Hilux 7, two types of gearboxes were provided - a five-speed automatic transmission is installed in tandem with a 2.5 engine, and a five-speed automatic transmission with a 3.0 engine. Both boxes are well known for other models of the brand and have proven themselves only on the positive side. The weakest point in mechanics is the clutch, its resource does not exceed 100,000 km. If the vehicle is driven under severe conditions, clutch replacement may be required after 50,000 km. An automatic transmission can please with a sufficiently large service life (300-350 thousand km), but only if it is serviced in a timely manner (once every 60,000 km). If these requirements are neglected, then closer to 150,000 km, the torque converter will need to be replaced.

When buying a used car of this model, it should be understood that the lines of the transmission service directly depends on the mode of operation. So, for example, if the previous owner drove on the asphalt with the drive constantly on, then the transmission lines of such a car are halved. The disadvantages of the all-wheel drive system include leakage of the front axle oil seals, also, over time, the transfer case begins to leak.

Toyota Hilux 7 suspension reliability

Toyota Hilux 7 is a frame car, the frame is very powerful and durable. The front independent suspension, which is equipped with powerful paired levers, is no less durable, but the rear suspension design is archaic by modern standards (a spring suspension design with a continuous axle), but as experience has shown, this decision is justified by good endurance. There are not so many weak points in the Hilux suspension, but they are. For example, ball joints and wheel bearings are not famous for their reliability (on average, they serve 60-80 thousand km). The rest of the suspension elements, under moderate loads, nurture 100-150 thousand km.

The rear suspension is practically unkillable, despite this from time to time, it needs to be paid attention to (lubrication of the inter-spring space is required), otherwise the squeaks from the rear suspension will slowly but surely drive you crazy. Despite the fact that the steering rack is not a problematic place in the car, it still requires constant attention. The fact is that the rubber anthers of the rods are constantly exposed to dirt and reagents and, because of this, they can become unusable even after 30-50 thousand kilometers.

Salon

The interior of the Toyota Hilux 7 is equipped with not the best finishing materials that are prone to a variety of creaks, especially in the cheapest trim levels. Among the shortcomings of electrical equipment, one can single out the rapid chafing of the tubes of the air conditioning system and constant malfunctions in the multimedia system. Otherwise, all systems work without failures. Of the advantages of the cabin, one can single out - good sound insulation, and a fairly large number of useful options.

Outcome:

It has endurance and reliability that many competitors will envy. However, it should be noted that this car has some of its own features and minor flaws. But generally speaking, this is one of the most reliable cars in this segment.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your feedback that will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.
