The design of Kalina-2 family cars uses a cable transmission, manufactured by AvtoVAZ since 2013. A feature of the mechanical box, designated as VAZ-2181, is the following: a diagnostic probe is not provided in its design. The inspection hole is located on the side, not on the upper side of the crankcase, which will not add convenience when changing the oil. The air filter box in cars "Grant" and "Kalina-2" is attached with three rubber stops. It will not be difficult to dismantle them, only first you need to disconnect all the connectors attached to the box from the outside. You will also need to remove the adsorber valve. And only then, without fear of damaging anything, the plastic box is taken to the side.

The cylinder to which the corrugation is attached is the DMRV sensor module. There is one connector on this module. Disconnect it, and the clamp holding the corrugation is better left unchanged.

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery;
  2. Disconnect the clip "1", which holds the power wire, and disconnect the connector "2" of the mass air flow sensor (Fig. 1);
  3. Dismantle the canister purge valve. Disconnect the connector with the wires, then press the spring with a flat screwdriver from the side and remove the module itself from the slots (Fig. 2);
  4. All stops holding the box can be easily removed from the slots (Fig. 3).

The connector that needs to be disconnected at "step 2" will be absent in trim levels with the 21127 motor.

Changing transmission oil

The cable transmission design contains a drain plug, which is typical for all manual transmissions. The control and filler hole is closed here with a separate plug, but you can pour liquid into the crankcase not only through it.

A reverse switch is attached to the unit body from above (see Fig.). And if this part can be unscrewed, then it will be easier to replace it than according to the standard AvtoVAZ manual.

  1. Reverse switch;
  2. Drain plug. It is accessed from the bottom side. The screw is unscrewed with a 17 wrench;
  3. Control and filler plug. You need to unscrew it by bringing the key from the side of the battery. A 17 flat key will do if the handle is not too long.

There is no need to unscrew the control plug trying to get to it from the side of the car bottom. As a last resort, you can perform the operation together using additional lighting.

The procedure for changing the gearbox oil will look standard:

  1. First, the control plug is not completely unscrewed;
  2. Unscrew the drain plug by substituting a free container under it;
  3. The used oil is drained, the plug is tightened;
  4. Having unscrewed the filler plug, the oil is replaced, then all the parts are installed in place.

According to reviews, 2300 ml of transmission fluid is placed in the VAZ-2181 box. The plant is filled with Rosneft Kinetic SAE 75W-90 oil, and the recommended drain interval is 75,000 km.

Advice: it is recommended to warm up the old oil before changing it. It will be enough to drive the car about 2-3 km, trying to vary the engine speed.

Liquid can be poured into the crankcase of the 2181 box through a separate hole, which is closed with a reverse switch. The detail in question will be clearly visible if you open the hood and remove the filter box:

Dismantling this part is not easy. First, disconnect the connector, and to loosen the fastening, you need a special box wrench with a high head. Key size - hexagon 22.

You can get access to the internal volume of the checkpoint in another way, which is not considered here. Together with engines 21126 and 21127, a speed sensor is used, mounted on the top of the box casing. It will be easy to dismantle this unit, but after reinstallation, the tightness is broken.

The oil level in the gearbox is controlled as follows: the standard filler plug must be unscrewed, and as soon as the liquid begins to come out to the casing, the top-up is stopped. It is advisable that the vehicle is installed on a level surface. Better yet, if the body is tilted to the right - the excess transmission fluid has not damaged anyone yet.

Then the chips accumulate in the working fluid and then settle on the magnets, and the oil itself acquires a dark shade with the presence of a characteristic odor. These factors oblige to carry out periodic and timely monitoring of the lubricant level in the transmission. For these purposes, the manufacturer purposefully provided for the presence of a special probe. When the level is below the middle mark of the dipstick, then the operation of the unit is contraindicated.

Service life of gear lubricant and engine oil

According to the regulations, the frequency of replacing transmission lubricants has a significant difference from the interval for changing engine oil in Lada Kalina. The manufacturer recommends that owners tend to this procedure at least after 75 thousand km. Experienced craftsmen are advised to resort to reducing the replacement period to 60 thousand km. The initial oil change in the gearbox in a new car should generally be carried out after 30 thousand km.

During the joint lapping process, new parts form small chips, which are subsequently suspended in the lubricant, which is highly undesirable. Further operation assumes the inevitable impact on the oil of different temperature extremes. Although after a 30-thousandth run, the intensity of production decreases significantly, but this does not indicate that this phenomenon will completely stop. The quality indicator of the factory lubricant leaves much to be desired, therefore it is recommended to give preference to the products of proven brands during the initial and subsequent replacements.

What to buy as oil for the Kalina motor?

A reasonable question: what kind of oil to pour? The sales network today can offer a wide range of transmission oils recommended for the Lada Kalina box. Experts have put forward a recommendation to use a lubricant with the following temperature and viscosity parameters: from "70-W80" to "80-W85". With regard to manufacturers, we note the products of such companies:

  3. We get to the drain plug of the unit and use the key on "17" to unscrew it (not yet completely).
  4. Place the container under the drain hole.
  5. We unscrew the cork and drain the mining. This process will take about 20 minutes for almost all of the oil to drain out of the crankcase.
  6. We immediately tighten the plug and remove the residual grease on the unit body with a rag.
  7. Having opened the hood, we are looking for the filler hole. It is absent in the Kalina box, so we will fill it through the dipstick hole.
  8. We connect the watering can to the hose, remove the dipstick and immerse the newly invented "filling device" into the indicated hole.
  9. We slowly fill in the grease, after which we immerse the dipstick in its original place.

This completes the oil change in the gearbox.

How much oil to pour into Kalina?

The standard volume declared by the manufacturer for filling is 3.1 liters. LADA Kalina owners recommend adding about 200 grams of oil to the specified amount. This avoids the noise of the unit shafts at speed and improves heat dissipation.

Oil for transmissions has a high viscosity, and even in a hot state during draining it leaves the crankcase reluctantly. A certain amount of mining inevitably remains on the inner walls of the unit. Here the owners of LADA Kalina recommend "spilling" some of the lubricant.

The procedure looks like this:

  1. Before changing the gearbox oil, make sure that the drain plug is not installed.
  2. Pour about 150 grams of new grease into the unit and wait for it to completely drain from the drain hole. First, we observe the release of a blackened slurry, and then a substance lighter in color.
  3. Having completed this manipulation, we twist the plug and perform the above replacement procedure.

This action is also very useful when pouring a new product from another manufacturer.

Do-it-yourself oil change in a box Lada Kalina - step by step instructions

1. We drive into the pit and fix the car (handbrake, gear, bricks for wheels, etc.).

2. For convenience, I removed the crankcase protection, it is not necessary to do this, but it is more convenient for me.

3. Place an empty container under the drain hole.

4. Then we take the key to "17" and unscrew the gearbox drain plug. Be careful and careful the oil may be HOT!

5. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes for the oil to drain completely.

6. Now you need to tighten the plug and proceed directly to the oil change procedure, that is, to fill in a new clean transmission oil.

7. Take a watering can with a long neck or as in our case with a hose and install it in the filler hole.

8. Open a can of oil and slowly pour in about 3 liters. Using a dipstick, check the oil level in the box; it should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks.

!!! Advice: For better and more comfortable shifting of the fifth gear, I recommend pouring in a little more oil so that the level is slightly above the middle of the “mezhmetchnogo” space, that is, closer to the upper level. Attention, this is just a tip, you can fill strictly according to the level, this is your own business!

When the new oil is filled and the level is checked, screw the filler neck and you can safely go wash your hands, because the oil change in the Lada Kalina gearbox is completed.

After a few days, check the oil level again, top up if necessary.

The required volume of oil for the gearbox

Lada Kalina (VAZ 1117, 1118 and 1119) requires 3.5 liters of oil. When buying oil, you should purchase a 4 liter canister, of which about 0.5 liters will remain for refilling. If you buy 4 liters, it will be more expensive.

Self-change of oil in the gearbox

It is better to replace the engine oil in the gearbox from the inspection pit or overpass. For the convenience of pouring oil, you need a small funnel and about 30-40 cm of a rubber hose. Connect the hose to a funnel and prepare for pouring.

If you wish, to make it more convenient, you should dismantle the engine protection, but you can do without this, but it will be more difficult to get to the drain plug.

To drain the old oil, you need an empty container with a volume of about 5 liters. You can allow half an old oil canister or put a bowl. We install the container under the drain plug.



Unscrew the drain plug using a 17mm wrench, regular or flat, and wait for the oil to drain completely.



After the old oil has completely drained off, tighten the drain plug and proceed to filling in new oil.


We find the filler neck, take out the check probe, insert a funnel with a hose into the hole and start pouring oil. Fill in about 3-3.2 liters of oil, take out the funnel and insert the dipstick. We check the oil level, add more oil if necessary.



The required oil level in the gearbox must be between the MIN and MAX marks.



After carrying out all the work, we check if oil is flowing from the drain plug. We also recommend driving a few tens of meters, then check the oil level again.
