The trunk has become larger (540 liters instead of 410), the interior is more spacious. Note that while the length of the living area has been increased by 45 mm, the distance between the front and rear seats has increased by 65 mm. The family will love it. So, the new RAV4 is trying to fit somewhere between the Outlander and the X-Trail, making its face look meaner and somewhat plump. But these are my guesses, let's see what they think about this in Toyota itself. I open the press release and read: "... design changes emphasize strength and athleticism ... even more masculine ..." Yes, the Japanese really tie up with women's toys. We read further: "... the highest class of sport utility vehicle ..." Strange, why don't they replace the word "sporty" with "reliable"? And one more thing: "... the enlarged body gives the appearance a solidity and status ..." At this point, the owners of the LC200 should cry, they spent two and a half times more on the same qualities.


Toyota's press release did not say how the fresh RAV4 behaves on the move. I, too, did not find anything new in the character of the crossover. The last time I drove it was in March 2008 when we compared it to the Jeep Liberty. Then I remembered the ease with which the "Japanese" made all the maneuvers - acceleration, turn, climb a hill. And the new version does not put pressure on the driver either with weight or intelligence. Moderately obeys the steering wheel, brakes well. The main thing is that he does everything without straining - this is his main quality. And in general, this is a fairly easy-to-manage crossover, which is not distinguished by either excessive rolls or a stiff suspension. Everything in it is quite harmonious. Except for off-tarmac driving possibilities.

Off-road, it behaves as before, like a large passenger car with a helpless traction control system, resisting all the way. It is better to drive over obstacles with acceleration. In general, only good geometry allows you to move over difficult sections - the entry / exit angles of the RAV4 are 29/25. This, however, does not guarantee the inviolability of the bumpers, so be careful. And if this "Japanese" gets stuck with hanging wheels, then you have to go out and think about how to live on. However, for a little hooliganism, ESP can be disabled and the rear axle coupling locked. With some experience, the benefits of all-wheel drive will be available. Within reasonable limits. In an amicable way, a diesel engine or a lower transmission would be here, since they began to roll in the athletic direction. General impressions

Despite the already considerable age, the 3rd generation Toyota RAV4 looks pretty decent. It should be noted that the car is more stylish than aggressive. Probably, that is why in Russia it is considered rather a woman's car than a man's, although in Europe and the USA they do not agree with this opinion.

Roof rails, large sills, a branded spare wheel on the trunk, which, by the way, is often stolen, do not age the car at all, at least externally, the car looks stylish. And the interior can be called original, it distinguishes the Toyota RAV4 from its competitors. But the quality is not better or worse than others: monochrome display, hard plastic everywhere, lack of high-tech options, etc. etc. However, the driver's seat is just as comfortable as some luxury sedan. For example, the Outlander doesn't have that feeling either.

The 2.4-liter engine provides the crossover with decent dynamics, while the fuel consumption is relatively low - in the city about 13 liters per 100 kilometers - not small, but tolerable. The handling is surprising. Among classmates, RAV4 is almost the best by this criterion. However, in contrast to handling, there is always excessive suspension stiffness.

There is not enough space in the back row, this also applies to the volume of the trunk. Fans of fishing and outdoor activities will be disappointed. However, this is a reasonable price to pay for the excellent handling and dynamics of the car. Perhaps the only annoying thing behind the wheel of the 3rd generation Toyota RAV4 is the poor sound insulation. One gets the feeling that when they designed the car, they simply forgot about it. Engine

But the car has really weak points. First the motor. According to qualified auto mechanics, the 2.7 engine has a small, but common drawback - over time, the pump begins to leak. Chassis

Now the chassis. As mentioned above, the 3rd generation Toyota RAV4 has a very stiff suspension, especially the rear part, which makes the car bounce on speed bumps. Also worth mentioning is the weak rear stabilizer struts, which, by the way, require replacement much earlier than the front ones. If we talk about, then the RAV4 has a reliable disc clutch and if you change the oil on time and do not force the car off-road, it will last a long time.

Electrician

In general, repairing a 3rd generation Toyota is not cheap, except perhaps for an electrician. Sometimes the lambda sensor of the exhaust system fails, sometimes the sensor for on / off brake lights. In addition, corrosion causes a malfunction of the electrofusion connector, turning the crossover into a front-wheel drive. I am glad that these problems are rare.

Buying a new car

Today in the Toyota Center they sell a new - 4th generation Toyota RAV4, partly controversial in design, but even more brutal. The starting price of the car is 1,174,000 rubles. With a slightly smaller engine and in a similar configuration, the RAV4 costs more than 1,500 thousand rubles. However, with a 2.5-liter engine, it is more powerful and faster than its predecessor, plus new options have been added inside.

According to statistics, more than half of the owners of the 3rd generation Toyota RAV4 speak positively about their purchase. They praise reliability, dynamics, handling and, of course, design. Well, they complain about poor noise insulation and stiff suspension. On the secondary market, it will not be difficult to find a fresh car, even if its mileage is far beyond 100 thousand kilometers.

The third generation Toyota RAV4 (designation CA30W) went on sale in its home country in November 2005, and in December in the USA and Canada. A little later, the RAV4 reached Europe. In 2010, the compact crossover underwent restyling. As a result, the head and rear optics and the radiator grill have changed. We slightly corrected the range of power units and boxes.

Toyota RAV4 (2006 - 2008)

The three-door version in this generation is no longer found. It should be noted that cars with an increased wheelbase were offered on the American market - 2.66 m versus 2.56 m.

After restyling in European modifications, 1AZ-FE gave way to the updated 2.0 l (3ZR-FE) with 158 hp, and in the American 2AZ-FE it gave way to 2AR-FE (2.5 l / 170 hp). RAV4 are also found with diesel engines with a working volume of 2.2 liters (2AD-FHV / 136 hp and 2AD-FTV / 177 hp).

All petrol engines are generally reliable and hassle-free. In exceptional cases, it becomes necessary to replace leaking oil seals. The owners of the restyled Toyota RAV4 with a 2.0 liter gasoline engine note the noisier operation of the engine: diesel, clatter. This feature is caused by the Valvematic system, designed to smoothly change the valve lift.

Engines of 2.4 liters often begin to "take oil" when the mileage is more than 70-100 thousand km - about 2-3 liters from replacement to replacement.

The idyll is spoiled by the pump of the liquid cooling system (pump), which often begins to leak after 40-60 thousand km. In some cases, it reaches up to 80-100 thousand km. The cost of the pump from an authorized dealer is about 5,000 rubles. In auto parts stores, the original pump can be found for 3-4 thousand rubles, an analogue - for 1.5-2 thousand rubles. The work on the replacement of auto mechanics is estimated at 2-3 thousand rubles.

The "squirrel tail" can grow out of the exhaust pipe after 40-60 thousand kilometers. This is a poorly fixed internal thermal sound insulation of the muffler. With a mileage of more than 50-80 thousand km, the tension or guide roller of the drive belt of ancillary units often begins to make noise.

Diesel engines are slightly less reliable than their gasoline counterparts. Fuel injectors confidently go up to 200-300 thousand km. But there is one major flaw. After 150,000 km, microcracks appear around the liners. As a result, the gasket under the block head burns out, and the coolant disappears without a trace. Repairs can only be done once.

On RAV4, there was a once widely known problem of Toyota cars - sticking of the gas pedal in the pressed position. Real cases are rare. Officially, Toyota has announced that the reason is the rugs that fall under the pedal. But few people know that it was prescribed to install an additional metal plate on the CTS pedals, which contributes to the guaranteed return of the pedal to its original position. It is worth noting that not all versions had an all-wheel drive system. Therefore, when inspecting, you should look under the car and check for the presence of a rear differential. If the car is all-wheel drive, then the transmission lock button must be present in the cabin.

Together with the motors, a 5-speed "mechanics" or a 4-speed "automatic" is working. After restyling, the 5-speed manual transmission was replaced by a "six-speed", and a variator was installed with a 2.0-liter engine. All boxes are generally reliable and have no serious complaints, with a few exceptions. So, the owners of RAV 4 with 5-speed "mechanics" note the "bite" of the lever in the first gear. It is possible to turn off the speed only after pressing the clutch twice. Also, the owners note a slight howl when driving in 1st and 2nd gears. The clutch travels over 150-200 thousand km.

Toyota RAV4 (2008 - 2010)

The silent blocks of the levers serve the same amount.

Hub bearings run more than 100-150 thousand km. They change assembled with the hub. The cost of the new hub is about 5-6 thousand rubles, and the replacement work is about 1-1.5 thousand rubles.

As a rule, there are no complaints about the brake system. In rare cases, it is necessary to replace a failed ABS sensor.

Knocks in the steering wheel are not uncommon after 40-80 thousand km. As a rule, the culprit is either the steering cardan (4-5 thousand rubles), or the steering shaft (from 5 to 11 thousand rubles), or the steering rack (20-25 thousand rubles). The steering rods run more than 100 thousand km, but their replacement by the manufacturer is not provided. The steering rods only come with a new rack. But you can pick up an analogue for 700-800 rubles and replace it.

Other problems and malfunctions

The body paintwork, as on most cars, is weak and easily scratched. Chips soon appear. The restyled RAV4, in addition, suffers from pockets of corrosion on the bonnet - around the chrome grille trim. The problem mainly concerns regions that use aggressive reagents in winter - Moscow and St. Petersburg. Dealers, when yellow spots appeared, repainted the hood under warranty. Electricity in general is not a hassle. Sometimes there is a "glitch" of the air conditioner, which disappears after removing the terminal from the battery. The generator, as a rule, runs more than 150 thousand km, after which it may be necessary to replace the diode bridge.

The exteriors of cars with short and long wheelbase differ significantly. The "short" crossover has lost its aggressive features: a classic-shaped grille with simple horizontal crossbars and more European than its predecessor, the headlights make the look more restrained and, perhaps, even elegant.

In profile, the RAV 4 is unmistakably recognizable, the modified rear lights give no reason to doubt which car is in front of your eyes. The extended version of the LWB crossover, thanks to a different grille, looks a little meaner than the standard one. From the side, both modifications can be easily distinguished by the shape of the windows at the rear of the vehicle.

The "two-story" architecture of the dashboard and the design of the door cards remain a distinctive feature of the interior of the Toyota RAV 4 3. Round shapes prevail along the perimeter of the center console, and its top is crowned with rectangular air vents. Aluminum-look inserts significantly enliven the look. A visor above the dashboard highlights the three large scale rings.

The Toyota RAV4 3 is supplied to the Russian market with two petrol four-cylinder power units: a 2.0-liter Valvematic, a Dual VVT-i and a 2.4-liter VVT-i petrol engine.

The first motor provides a maximum power of 158 hp. at a crankshaft speed of 6,200 rpm, the maximum torque is reached at 4,000 rpm and is 198 Nm. The 2.4-liter engine produces 170 hp. at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 224 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

The choice of the type of transmission depends on the installed engine: the 2.0-liter unit can be paired with both a 6-speed gearbox and a Multidrive S variator. At the same time, cars are available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The more powerful 2.4-liter engine is aggregated only with a 4-band automatic and is equipped with an all-wheel drive system.

At the time of sales, dealers offered Toyota RAV 4 2012 in six different trim levels: Standart, Comfort, Elegance, Comfort Plus, Prestige and Prestige Plus.

The list of installed equipment in the basic version includes front fog lights, steel 17-inch rims, headlight washers, power windows, electric drive and heated rear-view mirrors, heated front seats, air conditioning, audio system, ABS, ESP, assistance system for a year and a descent from mountains, active head restraints, airbags and curtains, immobilizer, central locking, etc.

The price of a front-wheel drive Toyota RAV4 III with a 2.0-liter engine and a manual transmission in the Standard configuration was 967,000 rubles.

In the top-end version of the Prestige Plus, the crossover is additionally equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, a multifunctional leather-trimmed steering wheel, separate climate control, rain and light sensors, rear parking sensors, leather upholstery of seats and doors, an intelligent car access system and a navigation system and hard disk

The long wheelbase version is equipped with roof rails, wheel arch extensions and tinted head optics. The cost of the all-wheel drive RAV 4 in the Prestige Plus configuration with a 2.4-liter engine and an automatic transmission is 1,461,000 rubles.
