How is the fuel filter. How long does it take to change the fuel filter on a diesel car? Where is the filter in the car

Sooner or later every motorist is faced with the moment when a car fuel filter needs to be replaced. The fuel filter is a part that is able to purify gasoline before it enters the engine cylinders. The cleaner the gasoline gets inside, the longer the engine will run. Since a gas station is not always filled with pure gasoline or diesel fuel, it can contain everything from sand to rust. The filter copes with such elements, and they settle on it. You cannot drive with a dirty filter, as over time its throughput drops, power drops, or the car will not start. Then the question arises, how often to change fuel filter.

How often to replace

The recommended period for replacing the fuel filter is the expiration of 30,000 - 50,000 kilometers of driving, since approximately this is enough for its full operation. This is a kind of regulation. Also, the length of the period depends on the gas station and driving style. Usually, if the engine begins to triple or stall, this can be taken as a signal that it is time to change its filter elements. This also corresponds to a drop in power, increased consumption fuel and if the car does not start.

You cannot let the car run on a clogged fuel filter, since in a bad case you will have to study not only how to change the fuel filter, but also flush the engine, which will cost big money... It is also important to understand that the declared mileage before filter replacement is indicated by manufacturers who have better cleanliness of the roads. In our reality, when asked how much to change the fuel filter, experts believe that the figure for replacement can be 20 - 25,000 km, and for diesel filters about 10,000. It is important to know how to replace the fuel filter in order to do the work yourself.

Features of filters and their location

Gasoline purification has two or more degrees of purification. The first degree includes large particles that enter the tank with the fuel. Smaller particles are already going to the fine filter, and they are located directly in the line between the tank and the engine. The location in each car is different, but most often it is located directly in the fuel tank itself.

The gasoline filter has differences in its design. They are installed on vehicles depending on the fuel injection systems. The systems can be divided into 3 types:

 • Injector .;
 • Diesel.

Filters are divided into:

 • Prefabricated - only the filtering element changes;
 • Not collapsible - requires complete replacement the entire fuel filter.

Non-collapsible filter

You can find out the location of the fuel filter for a specific model in the operating instructions. Basically, diesel filters are located under the hood. For an injection car, as a rule, when the filter is not collapsible, you need to look under the bottom of the car or the rear seat. If it is collapsible, then in the gas pump and all the work consists in replacing the mesh on the fuel pump.

Precautions

Since any spark can provoke a fire, it is best to follow basic safety precautions. Do not stay near the filter with a cigarette. It is always best to have a fire extinguisher near you. It is best to do everything in a well-ventilated area, or outdoors. When the replacement of the fuel filter is completed, you need to wash your hands from fuel residues using soap and water. It is best to use glasses to protect your eyes.

Work procedure

In order to replace the fuel filter with your own hands successfully, you will need to have a set of keys. Specifically, you need keys for nuts 10, 17, 19. Before starting work, you need to disconnect the mass from the car so that a short circuit does not occur. Next, a working filter is clamped with a 17 or 19 key and the fitting is unscrewed with a 10 key. It is important that the fuel does not enter the organ of vision. All fuel residues are drained into a plastic container. 10 with a key you need to unscrew the union that is located at fuel pump from the other side. To do this, the clamp is slightly loosened, after which you can begin to unscrew it. You need to know which way to twist it, what is written in the instructions for the part. Most often, the direction of fuel movement is indicated by an indicator that is applied to the body. When the dismantling is completed, you can begin to install a new gasoline fuel filter. Installation is done in the same order, just the opposite. It will be better for the filter to install a new retaining clip. This will increase the life of the part.

In order not to splash with fuel, it will be better to release the pressure. To do this, press the ramp spool. Alternatively, remove the fuse when the car starts up and leave the engine running until it stops.

After completing the installation, you need to check how the new device behaves when starting the engine. Make sure there are no gasoline leaks. If any are found, then the problem is probably in the rubber rings, you need to replace them. It is better to do it right away, since later you will still have to return to it. This completes the work of replacing the filter.

Replacing the diesel filter

To carry out the work, you need:

 • Manual vacuum pump;
 • Fuel tanks;
 • Fuel filter cartridge;
 • O-ring on the filter cover;
 • Water tanks.

In general, replacing the fuel filter on a diesel engine follows a similar scenario, but with some nuances:

 • To begin with, the ignition in the car is turned off;
 • It is necessary to unscrew the cartridge from the bottom, having previously installed a container under it. After completing the collection of fuel, you need to wipe the cartridge well from fuel residues;
 • To remove the filter shell, you need to unscrew the bolts and remove the fasteners;
 • The fuel hoses are disconnected;
 • The filter housing mount is removed.

Before installing the cartridge, you need to remove the water that is present inside the filter. This is where you need a vacuum pump. Next, a tube is inserted that will suck directly to the filter housing. After that, you need to make sure that the filter is clean, and then you can already insert the cartridge.

The body is closed by a lid that sits on a new O-ring. The ignition turns on for two seconds, but the engine should not start. This is necessary to activate the pump, which pumps fuel, to fill the filter with fuel and remove air that could have formed in the fuel system, in the case of a replaced filter. If fuel forms on rubber parts, wipe it off. This completes the replacement of the fuel filter diesel engine considered complete.

Conclusion

To avoid problems with the fuel system, you need to observe the frequency of replacing the fuel filter, then the likelihood of engine breakdown will be excluded. If the car does not start well, then the filter is the first thing to pay attention to when it has not been changed for a long time. Experienced driver can always figure out when to change the fuel filter.

If you have any questions - leave them in the comments below the article. We or our visitors will be happy to answer them

The quality of the engine operation depends on many factors, and the purity of the fuel entering the combustion chambers is one of the most important. For this, filters are built into the fuel systems of all vehicles. Moreover, for a different degree of cleaning. They are called coarse and fine fuel cleaning. And any filter becomes clogged and requires replacement. And it is useful for a car enthusiast to know how to replace a fuel filter.

Rough cleaning

The first in the fuel supply system is the coarse filter. It is located directly in the tank. Directly on the fuel intake. Usually this is a mesh formation of various shapes. From a mesh with a fine mesh, unable to pass debris.

For carburetor machines

This is a tapered structure, made of a thin metal mesh, which is put on the intake tube. It is usually put on without replacement, but only sometimes washed.

For vehicles with "injector"

Here is a more serious question. Fuel injection on these vehicles occurs through fuel injectors - "injectors". The diameter of the passage holes is very small. Therefore, the risk of contamination is an order of magnitude higher than that of carburetor ones, and the possibility of flushing is much lower. Accordingly, the protection by fuel filters is much stronger. Feature fuel system "Injection" machines are also in the fact that the pump is either directly in the tank or right next to it. Now almost 100% of cars - with a pump inside the fuel tank. The filter on them is made of plastic and is attached directly to the pump. Not cleaned or washed. These filters are only replaceable. The replacement scheme is approximately the same for all models. Even with different shapes of the fuel filter itself.

Fine cleaning

Or, in other words, a sump. Designed for cleaning fuel from the smallest debris and water impurities by overflowing from one capacitive cavity to another through a paper or other filler.

On cars with a carburetor, a fine fuel filter is located near the engine in front of the fuel pump. This is a plastic, transparent cup with two pipes. Intake and exhaust

On the injectors, it is a metal barrel about 12 centimeters in diameter and up to 20. Inlet and outlet fittings are located in the end parts. There are two types of them. There is a threaded version for a 19-17 wrench, and a new sample with tubes for a latch. Each filter must be marked with an arrow of the direction of fuel movement.

Important! You definitely need to make sure of correct installation fuel flow filter. Otherwise, the filter will lose its throughput after 5-7 operating hours.

The fine filter is located in cars with ECM, as a rule, under the bottom near the fuel tank, less often under the hood. IN russian cars can be divided like this:

 • VAZ (classic and SUVs) - under the hood;
 • VAZ (front-wheel drive) under the bottom in the area of the gas tank;
 • GAZ.UAZ - under the hood.

Replacement on carburetor models

Replacing both types of filters on carburetor models is not difficult. No special tools or skills required. To replace fuel sump filter on a carburetor model, one screwdriver is enough. The filter is secured with conventional tightening clamps put on the fuel pipes. It is necessary to loosen the clamps and remove the hoses from the filter inlets. Everything can be replaced with a new one.

It is a little more complicated with a coarse fuel filter if it is a front-wheel drive model:

 • Vaz 2109;
 • Vaz 2108;
 • Vaz 2110;
 • Vaz 2114.

Also, modifications, then you will have to remove the back seat to replace it. Under it, in the floor, there is a hatch fastened with two self-tapping screws for a figured screwdriver. Removing the hatch cover gives access to the built-in fuel tank fuel level sensor. There is also a suction inlet with a filter. By unscrewing six nuts, you can remove the module with a pipe and wash or replace the filter.

On classic cars with rear wheel drive

 • Vaz 2101;
 • Vaz 2103;
 • Vaz 2106;
 • Vaz 2107,

the fuel tank is located in the trunk under decorative panel on right. Access is even easier there. Remove the decorative cover from the tank and replace.

Attention! On the VAZ 2102 and 2104 models, the access hatch is in the floor luggage compartment left!

Replacement on a car with ECM

Due to the nature of the fuel system of "injection" cars, fuel filtration, therefore, replacement of fuel filters plays a very important role. In addition, their replacement is more difficult than on carburetor cars. This is due to the need to maintain a constant pressure in the fuel supply system from 2.5 to 3.5 MPa. For this, either threaded or snap fittings are used everywhere.

This ensures that no fuel leaks. And facilitates the process of replacing system nodes.

How to replace a fine fuel filter

The first step is to release the pressure in the fuel rail. It is located on the engine and combines all the injectors into one unit. On the ramp, or next to it, there is a special connector. It is used to connect a fuel pressure gauge. It is designed as a valve. It is convenient to discharge the excess through this valve. The filter can then be replaced. For any placement of the fuel filter, it is fixed to the body with a bracket tightened with a 10 bolt. If the filter fittings are threaded, you will need two wrenches 19 and 17. Without releasing the bracket, loosen the fittings and unscrew them completely. Loosen the bracket, replace the filter-sump and screw everything into place.

Important! Be sure to check the condition of the O-rings on the fuel lines. Usually, new ones are immediately included in the kit, and it is better to replace them.

Check tightness carefully to avoid leakage.

Replacing the fuel filter in the tank

This is the most delicate and complex of this type of work. The fact is that on most models, this filter is installed directly on the fuel pump, and that, in turn, in a special fuel module. As a rule, the fuel module is made of petrol-resistant plastic. Therefore, when replacing, handle it with care.

The simplest device is the fuel module for VAZ cars with an engine volume of 1.5 cubic meters. see The latest VAZ models, the most complex in structure and fastening - "Kalina", "Priora" and others.

It is quite inconvenient to replace this filter on front-wheel drive cars VAZ 2105 and 07. In order to remove the device from the tank, it is necessary at least to move the tank 20 cm away from the wing. After that, with two keys for 17, unscrew the inlet-outlet fittings and disconnect the fuel pump control harness and the sensor. Unscrew the eight fixing nuts with a 7 head with a knob. Remove the module carefully. The pump is mounted on a long rod that reaches the bottom of the tank. Replace the filter and reinstall the module. When installing, check the condition of the sealing rubber on the hole for the module. Reassemble in reverse order.

Attention: When unscrewing the fuel connections, be sure to mark them with chalk or tape so as not to confuse them.

Front-wheel drive 1.5 l and 1.6 l

As with the carburetor models, the inspection hatch is located under the rear seat.

On cars with a 1.5 liter engine, the fuel pump module is metal and open. It is enough to raise the seat, unscrew the hatch cover, disconnect the harness, unscrew the metal fuel supply fittings and unscrew the eight nuts in a circle from the pressure ring.

You can remove the module. You just need to carefully inspect and, if necessary, replace the seal. A removable glass is located at the bottom. It comes off effortlessly. Under it is a fuel pump with a fuel filter. Replace filter and reassemble in reverse order.

On cars with a 1.6 liter engine, the pipes are plastic and fastened with latches. Remove catches and fuel lines. Also unscrew eight nuts, disconnect the wiring and pull out the module. The module is made of plastic. The lower part, the glass, is fixed from the upper part with a ring on a metal support tube. Remove the pin and unfasten the "return" pipe from the side. Unscrew the fastening of the level sensor with the float. The glass will go down. Inside the pump stands in a special socket with three latches. Unfasten them and remove the glass. Everything, you can change the filter and assemble in the reverse order.

On new VAZ models, the module is not bolted. It is held in the opening of the gas tank by a special clamping structure of a round shape, including special projections and clamps. Quite an ingenious solution. For replacement, it is necessary to turn the fasteners with a hammer on the special projections.

On many foreign cars, this issue is solved even easier. A twist-off lid is made. Although its reliability is lower than that of russian version, replacement is faster.

Fuel filter replacement interval

The intervals for replacing the fuel filter for carburetors and injectors are slightly different. Usually, replacement of a fine fuel filter for a carburetor is recommended for 50 thousand km. At the same time, for injectors, a frequency of at least 30 thousand is recommended, and better than 20 thousand ., or better than 30 thousand. This is the technological replacement frequency, which does not take into account force majeure cases requiring urgent replacement of filters.

In the video you can watch the process of replacing the mesh for cleaning fuel on the "Lada Kalina":

If you are a car owner with experience, then you probably faced such a problem as the need to replace petrol filter... This element of the car structure is responsible for screening out all debris, rust particles, dust, and also retains all dirt, preventing it from entering the fuel system line. Have component parts the filter has an extremely small cross-section, so the accumulated debris will sooner or later clog the filter, and, therefore, it will have to be replaced. You can do this with your own hands in the garage, without having to travel to car services.

Petrol filter malfunctions

Fuel filtration in a car takes place in two stages: rough cleaning, during which all more or less large particles are removed, followed by a fine cleaning. It will be about fine filters, which are located between the fuel tank and the engine.

The overwhelming majority of car manufacturers that launch products on the modern market claim that the fuel filter that is installed in their car will last for the entire period of the car's operation. But such a result can only be obtained under laboratory conditions. In practice, a completely different situation is observed. The quality of the fuel, as well as the amount and structure of the debris that enters the system, greatly affects the condition of the gasoline filter. You can neglect this type of repair, but what is it fraught with?

The consequences are really serious, since the load on the filter increases due to the clogged filter, that is, the time of its operation is reduced. In addition, a clogged filter causes the engine to malfunction, as fuel is not supplied to the system as it should. That is, the car starts to triple, it can stall at any moment, or it may not start at all. There are also problems with gear shifting, since the automatic transmission in the automatic transmission incorrectly interprets the engine commands regarding gear shifting, therefore, either does not change gear at all, or does it at the wrong time.

It makes sense to list clear signs, thanks to which you can determine exactly whether the fuel filter is clogged or not:

1) The engine of the car runs unevenly, that is, the car "troit";

2) Periodically, while driving, the power of the car drops;

3) When moving at low speeds, the car stalls after pressing the pedal, even if you press it hard to the floor;

4) The speeds are switched incorrectly, that is, at the wrong time;

5) Increased fuel consumption.

These are the symptoms of a disease called "clogged gasoline filter". But even if this does not happen with your car, then be prepared for the fact that one morning the car may not start. The problem is that it is very difficult to notice these signs in the early stages of the "disease", and therefore there are sudden troubles.

It should be dismantled with one more question - what is the frequency of replacing the gasoline filter? The manual for your car will probably indicate the figure of 40 thousand km. So, at least 10 thousand km should be subtracted from this figure, since both the roads in our country and the quality of the supplied fuel leave much to be desired. Turns out that a new petrol filter must be installed after driving a car for a maximum of 30 - 35 thousand km. Service specialists generally perform this procedure after 20-25 thousand km, despite the manufacturer's recommendations.

Gasoline filter replacement tools

Basically, replacing a petrol filter is not a daunting task. It's all about patience and knowledge of the intricacies of this operation. First of all, you need to figure out which tools you need to prepare in order to make a replacement. If the filter is located under the bottom of the car, then you will have to drive the car into the inspection pit. Before removing the element, you need to prepare the following materials:

1) A new gasoline filter, and you need to buy a product made by the manufacturer of your car, or the filter that, according to the recommendations of the same manufacturer, is suitable for your brand;

2) Spanners;

3) Phillips and slotted screwdrivers;

4) A piece of rags.

When buying a new gasoline filter, you need to check the compliance of the new element with the following parameters:

1) Filtration level. If this indicator is not met enough, then large particles will still enter the system along with the fuel, and this is fraught with rapid engine breakdown;

2) The area of the filtering surface, the presence of a rubber seal, which will block the entrance directly to the filter. If there is no insulation, then such a filter will be difficult to replace in the future.

In general, fine filters, depending on the fuel system, are:

1) Carburetor. Their permissible degree of cleaning is 15-20 microns, that is, smaller particles will enter the system, but they will not cause serious damage to the motor;

2) Injection. The degree of cleaning is 5 - 10 microns. In such a system, the requirements for the maximum allowable particle size are higher. It turns out that injectors can get clogged with larger particles, so the holes in the filters for them are made smaller.

Be sure to tell the consultant the make of your car, as well as the year of its production. This will help you choose the right filter. In principle, if a filter is not available for your particular car model, then you can find a suitable replacement.

It is imperative to follow all safety rules, since you have to work with combustible materials. Gasoline may leak during the process, so the area where you plan to work should be well ventilated. Before starting work, you must:

1) De-energize the car by removing all terminals from the battery;

2) Do not smoke or carry out the procedure near sources of fire;

3) You need to prepare a fire extinguisher in advance (just in case);

4) If gasoline gets on your skin, wash it off immediately with soapy water.

In addition, it is imperative to relieve the pressure in the gas line, since you have to work with the fuel system. In order to do this, you need to put the car on the handbrake and turn on the "neutral", after which it is necessary to remove or move back seat, open the hatch, which is located under the seat on the bottom of the car, disconnect the connector to turn off the fuel supply line. After that, start the engine and wait until all the gasoline is gone from the engine. The car should stall by itself. Try starting the car again to make sure that the fuel pressure has disappeared.

There is another way to release pressure. Remove the "negative" wire from the battery, then remove the fuse F3 located in mounting block... This fuse is responsible for supplying power to the fuel pump. Start the engine to bleed off any fuel in the engine. After the pressure is released, you will need to return the fuse to its place.

Features of replacing the gasoline filter

Changing the fuel filter can be complicated by the fuel system being different cars constructed in different ways. There are brands in which the filter is located so conveniently that you can replace it without using tools, but there are also such machines in which the filter is literally hidden. This element can be fixed with special clamps or spring clamps, that is, improvised means in this case will not help at all. Before getting started, take a good look at how your car's fuel system is designed.

The instructions described below are somewhat universal, but differences in the process may be due to the nature of the fuel system. If the manufacturer installed the filter together with the gas pump, then it would be better to replace the last element as well.

So, in order to remove the old fuel filter, you must:

1) Find out where the filter itself is located. If the car is carbureted, then the filter element is located under the hood or under the bottom, and in case gasoline car the filter will be in the tank with the fuel pump.

2) Regardless of where the filter is located, relieve the pressure in the fuel system in advance (this was mentioned above).

3) De-energize the machine by removing the “-” terminal of the battery.

Removing the fuel filter:

1) Carefully inspect the fuel filter and determine exactly how it is attached to the gas line (fasteners can be exhaust or intake). Retainers can be in the form of bolts or latches. It is very important to remember the sequence in which all the parts are located, so as not to get confused during installation. You can take a picture of the installation site, so that later it would be easier to restore the whole picture.

2) Take a pre-prepared piece of rag and wrap it around the filter, as a small amount of gasoline will come out of it. Use a wrench or Phillips screwdriver to detach the fuel filter and fasteners. After that, the element can be removed.

Installing a new filter:

1) Install the new filter in the position in which the old element was located (the arrow on the filter will help you, it shows the direction of gasoline movement).

2) Connect the gas line, do not forget to check the branch pipe for bursts before that. If it is damaged, then it will have to be replaced.

3) Reinstall the fuel pump fuse and connect the terminals on the battery.

4) Start your car. Most likely, this will not work on the first attempt due to the released pressure in the fuel system. Leave the ignition on for 30-60 seconds, then try to start the engine again.

As you can see, even an inexperienced car owner can replace the fuel filter. Follow the instructions above and you should be good to go.

Many car enthusiasts may think that the fuel filter in the car is not particularly important element... But it should be noted that the state of the entire fuel system vehicle, can significantly affect the driving characteristics, and in some cases cause breakdowns. Therefore, it is worth carefully monitoring the condition of those elements that ensure the purity of the fuel.

It is the state of the fuel system and its performance that can affect the decrease in the dynamic characteristics of the car. This happens unnoticed and for a long time. But the moment comes when the car owner notices that earlier, his favorite car was faster and faster. This is the first sign that it is worth checking the state of the filter and remembering exactly when it was last changed.

Why fuel filters fail

The answer to this question is very simple. By the name of this element, you can guess that it serves to clean the fuel from different types pollution. All the filtered dirt and excess impurities settle on the filter element and gradually clog it. This leads to a decrease in the throughput of the filter, which leads to a disruption in the normal fuel supply.

It is worth noting that some car manufacturers claim that the fuel filter can work on their car, the entire life of the vehicle. Perhaps this statement is true, but most likely, this result can be achieved only in laboratory and sterile conditions. Especially taking into account the quality of the fuel sold in the territory of the former USSR.

How often should the fuel filter be changed

If we take into account the recommendations of automakers, and the many years of experience of many car owners, then we can deduce the average figure in the replacement frequency, about 30,000 km. It is this frequency that is considered the most effective, does not incur high maintenance costs, and preserves the normal operation of the fuel supply.

Naturally, these figures are the approximate and average period for replacing the filter. Which can vary widely, depending on many external factors. Therefore, it is worth getting used to your car and your operating conditions, and then work out for yourself an approximate replacement frequency.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter

It is worth noting here that these signs can indicate completely different reasons. But if you remember that the fuel filter changed for a very long time, then first of all, it is worth changing it, and only then continue diagnosing the car, if the problem persists.

Basically, there is only one symptom, and it manifests itself in case of any problems, when an insufficient amount of fuel is supplied to the engine. To be more precise, the engine significantly loses its power, it can sometimes triple, it is difficult to start on a cold one, or dips appear at high speeds.

Replacing the diesel fuel filter

Diesel fuel filtration has its own characteristics, which can be described in a separate article. But you can highlight a few main points, and summarize the approximate results of replacing the fuel filter on diesel cars.

In some cars, the diesel fuel filtration system can have three stages of cleaning. More precisely, the fuel diesel system in its design has a separator, a coarse filter and a fine filter.

Each of the elements performs its own function, and can be installed as separate components or assembled into one housing. The separator separates water from diesel fuel and is similar in its internal structure to a household siphon with a water sump. The coarse filter retains fuel contaminants with large fractions. Accordingly, the fine filter performs the final stage of filtration, and at the output it gives out perfectly clean fuel, which enters the engine through the nozzles.

It is the fine filter that has to be changed most often, and the replacement interval can be only 10,000 km.

Features of winter operation of a diesel engine

Again, there are several nuances associated with the principle of cleaning diesel fuel. First of all, a certain amount of water accumulates inside the separator during operation. Which tends to freeze at low temperatures, and interfere with the throughput of the element. Therefore, it may be necessary to replace this element.

Also, there is a danger that the summer version of diesel fuel will be filled into the fuel tank at the filling station. Which at low temperatures gives off paraffin that clogs fuel filters. Therefore, it is best to have a spare filter in the trunk (just in case), and refuel at a proven gas station, and only diesel fuel with winter additives, at the appropriate time of the year.

Conclusion

The frequency of replacing the fuel filter is an individual matter, depending on many factors, including the model of the car, the quality of the filter, the quality of the fuel, the way the car is operated, and many other factors that can affect the interval up or down.

Therefore, it is worth relying on your own feelings from the behavior of the car, and on your own experience, or the experience of other car owners of this model in your region. As practice shows, car owners change fuel filters from 10 to 80 thousand kilometers. Agree, the run is very large, and it is impossible to focus on it. Therefore, work out your interval yourself, and stick to it. Thus, you will help your car to work much longer and more stably.

Any, even the most high-quality gasoline or diesel fuel contains great amount foreign small particles and impurities. Penetrating into the engine cylinders together with fuel, they grind its parts like sandpaper, which leads to rapid wear of important components, loss of compression and oil pressure.

To prevent this, the fuel filter is intended - an element whose task is to mechanically clean the fuel.

How often should the fuel filter be changed

The service life of a fuel filter depends on many conditions: the quality of the fuel used, technical condition vehicle fuel system, operating conditions, etc.

 • clogging and oxide pipes;
 • rust formation;
 • use;
 • poor quality of the fuel filter itself.

Over the years of vehicle operation on the inner walls of rubber and copper pipes plaque forms, and oxide or rust accumulates on its metal nodes. Therefore, the older the car, the faster its fuel filter clogs.

Therefore, to replace the fuel filter, you cannot be guided only by the speedometer readings. The degree of contamination of a product with a transparent body is easy to determine visually. The filter that needs to be replaced darkens, and the fuel that has got into it loses its transparency.

Video - what the "opening" of the fuel filter showed:

The following signs indicate a clogged fuel filter:

 • the car jerks when driving (especially felt on the rise);
 • the motor stalls;
 • increases;
 • engine power drops.

From refueling bad gasoline or diesel fuel nobody is insured. As for the quality of the product itself, when purchasing a fuel filter, it is advisable not to rush to cheapness, but to buy original products.

How to change the fuel filter on cars of different types - order and features

The basic algorithm of actions when performing this process for most types of cars is similar - after the expiration of the operating period, the old fuel filter is dismantled, and a new one is installed in its place.

A distinctive feature for different types engines is the location of the element, which affects the complexity of the procedure, and some other nuances.

Removing / installing fuel filters for certain brands of vehicles may require special tools or fixtures. They must be prepared in advance.

Carburetor

IN carburetor engines the fuel filter is usually located under the hood. It is made of plastic or low-melting metal, and its installation is quite simple and accessible to everyone.

First, release the clamps on both sides, and then remove the filter itself. When installing a new one, it is important not to confuse its inlet / outlet direction (the arrow on the body should point towards the fuel pump).

Having installed the clamps back, you should pump fuel with the handle of the fuel pump. If at the same time a slight whistling is heard, then the sealing is broken. You can provide reliable fasteners using metal clamps.

Important! The fuel filter must not come into contact with the head cover or block body.

Injector

The supply of fuel to the cylinders of such motors is carried out under high pressure, therefore the fuel filters injection engines made of metal, and fastened with threaded connections. These elements can be located both in engine compartment, and under the bottom of the car.

Initially, it is necessary to reduce the pressure in the fuel system. To do this, from the fuse box located near the gearshift lever, you need to remove the middle one, which is usually responsible for the operation. After that, start the engine and wait until it stalls (this should take no more than a minute).

Video - how to replace a fuel filter on a VAZ 2111, 2112:

Upon completion of the work, insert the fuse back, and then try to start the engine. On the first try, the engine most likely will not start, since it takes a certain time for the operating pressure in the system to stabilize.

Diesel

Very sensitive to fuel quality. From a large number dirt in the nozzle nozzles tend to clog, which affects the performance of the motor.

Therefore, these cars have two types of filters: preliminary and fine cleaning. The latter, as a rule, requires frequent replacement (every 10-20 thousand km of run). It is located in the front of the vehicle, and in order to get to it, you need to remove the wheel and the wheel arch liner, and then perform the next set of works.

 1. Unscrew the tray.
