How to replace the fuel. Fuel filter: change or will it work? Where is the fuel filter installed

The operation of the internal combustion engine depends on the quality of the incoming fuel. The poorer the fuel, the more it contains various impurities. A fine fuel filter is used to clean the fuel from impurities. The article highlights why you need to change it and describes in detail how the replacement is performed.

Why change the fine filter?

Any car that uses various working fluids is equipped with special elements that serve to cleanse fluids from harmful impurities. The fuel system uses a coarse and fine filter to clean the fuel. During the operation of the car, it clogs up and does not perform its functions efficiently. Therefore, it has to be changed periodically.

Gasoline contains abrasive particles that adversely affect the operation of the internal combustion engine. There are special nets for fuel cleaning on the gas tank, carburetor and gas pump, but they are not enough for high-quality cleaning of gasoline. They can only retain large particles.

Fine filters are used to capture small particles. They can retain elements up to 15 microns in size.

If you do not change the filter element in time, then this threatens the following problems during vehicle operation:

  1. The engine runs with jerks, at first they appear when high revsand then when you go low.
  2. The machine is losing power. A contaminated element does not perform its functions, as a result the fuel injection nozzles are clogged, the fuel system is clogged. Thus, not enough gasoline is supplied to the engine, which leads to a decrease in its power.
  3. Premature wear of lambda probes, spark plugs and accelerators. With poor-quality cleaning, the fuel does not burn out completely, some of it settles on the cylinder baffles, spark plugs and pistons. As a result fuel mixture saturated with heavy metals and foreign particles, and then enters the exhaust gas system through accelerators and lambda probes, which significantly reduces the life of the parts.
  4. Fuel consumption increases. Clogged fuel filter does not directly affect fuel consumption, but it does cause a decrease in vehicle power. As a result, to accelerate the car to the desired speed, you have to put more pressure on the gas, which requires more fuel consumption.
  5. The car will not start. If you neglect to change the filter element, as required by the manufacturer, then it can reach the point that the engine will not start.

Filters differ in design and are divided into non-collapsible and collapsible products. Non-collapsible parts are disposable parts.

The collapsible one consists of a ceramic element and a mesh that can be cleaned, washed and used several times. The cost of a collapsible filter is slightly higher than a disposable one.

Where is?

If the procedure for replacing the fuel filter is the same on almost all car models, then the place where it is located is different. Most often it is located in engine compartment car in the upper part, it is also often placed in the tank next to the gas pump. Thus, in modern cars, the fuel filter is located either in the engine compartment, or in the gas tank, or under the body of the car.

Depending on where the filter element is located, for replacement, the machine is either driven onto a lifting device or put in a convenient position so that access to the part is provided.

Fine filter replacement process

The conclusion that it is necessary to change the filter can be made from a visual inspection. But there are signs by which you can determine that it is clogged: frequent jerks at high and low revs.

If, after examining the filter element, it turned out that it is clogged, then there are two options for solving this problem:

  • try to clean the element from contamination;
  • replace with a new product.

Do not wait for the contaminated element to manifest itself.

Tools

The set of tools required for replacement depends on the type of filter element.

A set of tools may include:

  • screwdrivers;
  • keys set;
  • pump or compressor;
  • clean rags;
  • gloves;
  • container for draining gasoline residues.

When choosing a new consumable, it is better to buy products with a transparent body.

This will make it possible to monitor the status of not only the filter, but the entire fuel system... If the body is half filled with fuel, then this indicates normal work filter. If air bubbles form in the liquid, then there is insufficient density in the fuel system or fuel pump. If the body is empty, this means that the hose that connects the tank to the atmosphere is clogged, or a plug has formed in the fuel drive.

Each engine requires a certain type of fine fuel filter. Therefore, when buying a consumable, you must carefully read the vehicle operating instructions in order to buy a suitable fine fuel filter.

Steps

Having determined where the fuel filter is located, you can begin to replace it.

The procedure consists of the following steps:

During the procedure, safety precautions should be observed: smoking is prohibited in the room. It is advisable to ventilate the room before the procedure.

Video "Replacing the fuel filter"

This video demonstrates the procedure for replacing a fuel filter element with a Lada Kalina, in which it is located under the body of a car.

Replacing the fuel filter is a regular maintenance... Proper maintenance of the fuel system by replacing the fuel filter will extend the life of the fuel pump. The filter traps impurities in the fuel and becomes clogged over time, so the efficiency is reduced. A clogged filter reduces the pressure and volume of the entire fuel system. If the vehicle begins to lose power, a dirty fuel filter may be the cause. The filter should be changed according to the manufacturer's recommended interval.

Note: This manual is only applicable to vehicles with gasoline engine... Typically, diesel fuel filters are much larger and the fuel system itself is more complex. The pressure in the diesel fuel system is much higher: modern battery fuel systems operate at pressures of over 1000 bar. Accidental release of such high pressure could result in injury.

Steps

Part 1

How to relieve pressure in the fuel system

    Locate the fuse box. To relieve pressure in the fuel system, temporarily turn on the engine with the fuel pump inoperative. Locate the fuse box and then turn off the fuel pump fuse so that it does not turn on with the engine. The fuse box is almost always located in the passenger compartment or under the hood. Use your car owner's guide to find out the exact location of the unit on your vehicle.

    • If there is no reference book, try to find the required information on the manufacturer's website.
    • Often the fuel pump fuse is located in the block that is located in the passenger compartment.
  1. Disconnect the fuel pump fuse. Open the correct fuse box and use the diagram on the box cover or owner's manual to locate the fuel pump fuse. Use needle nose pliers or plastic tongs to remove the fuse.

    • Without a fuse, the fuel pump will not turn on when the engine is started.
    • There is still fuel and pressure in the fuel pipes that run towards the front of the vehicle.
    • You can also find a fuse diagram on the manufacturer's website.
  2. Set the gear to neutral. Despite the lack of fuel supply from the tank to the engine, a small supply remains in the pipes, which is enough to get the car moving. Automatic box The gears should be set to the parking position, and the mechanical gear should be set to neutral and the handbrake should be applied.

    • If any gear is engaged, the car will move.
    • For standard transmission, be sure to engage the handbrake. For automatic transmission this step is optional but recommended.
  3. Start the engine. Insert the key into the ignition and turn to start the engine normally. The engine will start easily and will begin to consume fuel that is still left in the part of the fuel system after the fuel pump.

    • If the engine stalls after a few revolutions, the cause may be insufficient pressure in the system for delivering fuel to the engine.
    • If the engine has stopped, there is no need to relieve pressure again.
  4. Leave the engine running for about a minute. Depending on the type of fuel system in your vehicle and the average fuel consumption, the total operating time with the fuel pump off can be very different. No need to wait for the engine to turn off. Turn it on for one to two minutes and then turn it off.

    • Pressure relief when disconnected fuel pump will happen quickly enough.
    • If you wait until the engine stalls, then it will be difficult to start it again.
  5. Reinstall the fuel pump fuse. After relieving pressure in the fuel system, shut off the engine and install the fuel pump fuse. Cover the fuse box with the cover and reinstall all the removed trim parts.

    • Be sure to turn off the engine before installing the fuse.
    • Do not start the engine after installing the fuel pump fuse.

    Part 2

    How to remove an old fuel filter
    1. Disconnect the battery. The engine will not need to be turned on until work is complete, so disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the cable from the negative terminal to prevent the engine from starting when replacing the filter. Loosen the nut that holds the cable to the negative terminal by hand or using a wrench (you do not need to remove the nut completely).

      • Disconnect the battery to prevent the engine from starting when replacing the filter.
      • Move the negative cable away from the battery so that it cannot accidentally touch the terminal.
    2. Find a fuel filter. There are two common options for the location of the filter in a car, so refer to your service manual. It is most often found on the fuel line under the vehicle, just behind the fuel pump. In some cases, the filter can be located in the engine compartment on the line leading to the fuel rail.

      • Sometimes the fuel filter may be in a different location, so refer to the guide.
      • In some vehicles, the fuel filter is accessed from the cab.
    3. Raise the vehicle with a jack. If the fuel filter is under the vehicle, jack the vehicle up. Place the jack in a special place for a stop and turn on the pump or start rotating the lever to raise the car (depending on the type of jack).

      • After lifting to a sufficient height, install supports to work safely under the vehicle.
      • Never rely on the jack alone and install supports that can support the weight of the vehicle.
    4. Place a pan or bucket under the fuel filter. Despite the pressure release, a small amount of fuel may still remain in the system and may spill when the fuel pump is turned off. Use a bucket or pallet to prevent fuel from dripping or spilling onto the garage floor.

      • Do not mix fuel with oil or coolant that will be reused. The gasoline should be collected in a separate container and then poured into a canister.
      • Gasoline can corrode some types of plastics, so use only suitable containers to prevent fuel leaks.
    5. Remove the clips that hold the fuel filter. The filter is usually secured with two plastic clips. Locate the clips on both sides of the cylindrical fuel filter and pry them out with a flat screwdriver to remove them from the slots. It is recommended that you buy replacement clips along with the new filter as they may break during removal.

      • The clamps holding the fuel filter are made of thin plastic, so they often break. If you managed to remove them intact, then you do not need to buy new clips.
      • New clamps for the fuel filter can be purchased at any parts store.
    6. Disconnect the fuel hoses from the filter. Remove the clamps and slide the fuel hoses to remove them from the connections on both ends of the filter. Tilt the ends of the hoses into a bucket or sump to drain off any remaining gasoline.

      • Remember to wear glasses and gloves to protect your eyes and hands from splashes.
      • Take care not to spill gasoline on the garage floor.
    7. Remove the fuel filter from the bracket. The filter is probably secured with a metal bracket around the outer casing. Disconnect both fuel hoses and slide the filter towards the front of the body to remove it from the bracket. The filter is bell-shaped and can only be pulled out to one side.

The car depends on the efficiency of the engine. The cleanliness of the system determines the characteristics of dynamics and speed. Also, the condition of the fuel system has a significant impact on fuel consumption.

Not everyone can see faults in time.

Performance, which degrades over time, has little impact on the driving experience. But some time will pass, and various breakdowns may occur. This is a reflection of the vehicle's fuel system situation. It is very important to know what is the frequency of replacing the fuel filter on a particular car.

Indeed, in these very parts, the fuel is purified, which significantly increases the efficiency of the engine. Over time, filters perform less well with the cleaning task.

Causes of typical malfunctions

Many car manufacturers seriously argue that a modern one can work for the entire machine. However, in reality, such a result is simply impossible to achieve. If filters can work for so long, it is only in a sterile laboratory. The quality of the fuel supplied to filling stations in our country is, frankly, low. And also there can be found various debris, which does not have the best effect on the fuel system. So, debris and dirt is the cause of all problems with a car.

What is the frequency of replacing the fuel filter?

On average, modern automakers recommend replacing filters every 30,000 km. mileage. Many motorists are guided by the same figure, who came to this thanks to observations and experience. The signal to change the filter is the engine, which "troit" or stalls.

Naturally, everything is not always so simple. And if you refuel at those gas stations where they offer high-quality fuel, have a more careful driving style, rarely drive on country roads, then you can significantly increase the frequency of replacing the fuel filter. But this is how it happens quite rarely.

Three signs of a clogged fuel filter

It's time for you to change it if your power unit is no longer as smooth as a new one, if you notice a sharp drop in power, if fuel consumption has increased significantly compared to the nominal at this time of year.

If contamination is only at an early stage, then these problems will not be so obvious. Novice drivers may have certain difficulties, experienced ones, of course, will notice all this in time.

If the degree of contamination has reached the maximum stage, the motor simply will not start.

And besides replacing filters, the owner will have to flush the motor. If you skip this point, repairs can be very expensive.

Diesel Engines

Replacing a diesel fuel filter is a big, separate story. It is represented here by several components. So, there is a coarse filter, fine filter, and a special separator. All these components of one large purification complex have different functions, but they can be placed in a single housing.

Coarse filter function - cleaning diesel fuel from fairly large impurities. And interestingly, you will not find these in the fuel system. passenger cars, but on trucks and various agricultural vehicles they are.

Separator filters are used to remove water from fuel. This element is somewhat reminiscent of a sump. Here the diesel is sent upward, and the water accumulates at the bottom and then leaves through the drain.

Fine cleaning parts are used for maximum cleaning of solarium from the finest fraction. In most cases, it is this element that is clogged.

Car enthusiasts claim that replacing the fuel filter on a diesel engine is carried out much more often than on similar ones. gasoline cars... And it is also believed that replacements are necessary in the winter.

Why in winter?

Here's why. The water that accumulates in the separator when low temperatures air freezes.

This does not in the best way affect the flow of fuel. And instead of a winter diesel engine intended for winter, they like to purchase summer formulations. And in this summer solarium, paraffin is released at low temperatures. He then clogs the filters.

Experienced car owners take with them to winter time additional spare element, so that in case of a clogged old one, you can quickly install a new one.

Diesel loves service

In order for the diesel engine to operate at peak efficiency, it is recommended to replace filters after 8-10 thousand km. Well, you also need to drain the settled mass from it. It is not worth replacing at a shorter frequency. Clogged filters can create elevated level

Hyundai

If you look at the passport of a car of this brand, then the manufacturers recommend replacing the elements every 60 thousand km. Maybe this is a real figure for Europe, but our realities noticeably reduce the frequency.

So, on Russian fuel, the Hyundai fuel filter is replaced every 30, or even 20 thousand km. If with such gasoline the replacement was carried out according to the regulations, many cars of this korean manufacturer would not live to see weekdays... Perhaps somewhere they really change the filter after 60 thousand, but this is not about our country.

If we talk about Hyundai Solaris, then the figure of 60 thousand kilometers can be trusted, because the Koreans produce it in St. Petersburg and know the situation firsthand.

IN this car the rear seat must be removed for replacement. Under which you can find the fuel module cover.

There is a pump and filter under it. Replacing it yourself is very simple.

For diesel "Hyundai" the current figure is 10 thousand km. This is the deadline for the fuel filter.

Opel

This manufacturer is known for its high quality and fairly durable cars. In the line of models there are both cars with diesel engines and gasoline engines.

The passport data indicates that for elements that are not integrated into fuel tank and do not constitute a single whole with the fuel pump, replacement of the Opel fuel filter is provided every 30,000 - 45,000 km. This will save power units from increased wear.

In addition, water must be regularly drained from diesel filters, then everything will be fine with the engine, and the car will delight its owner for a long time.

Chevrolet

Cars from this manufacturer are very popular. Often novice car enthusiasts ask questions about the frequency of replacing filters and other consumables. So, the manufacturer in the documentation for the cars indicates that the Chevrolet fuel filter should be replaced at least every 25-30 thousand km. This figure is already much closer to our reality.

It is worth considering that when driving on dusty, back roads you can clog the filter much faster than 30 thousand km.

Replacing filters in a timely manner will not only protect your engines from damage, but will also allow you to get great driving pleasure.

Nissan

Fuel in its composition contains many different heavy metals, additives and other impurities that can cause early wear of the unit or parts of the fuel system. The relevance of this element in the cars of the Japanese manufacturer is simply invaluable.

With high quality fuel, the Nissan fuel filter can be replaced no more often than once every two years of active vehicle operation. But in practice, even if the Japanese recommend performing this operation after 40 thousand km, it is necessary to change the filter after 30 thousand. And this is the maximum in our reality.

Why are there 30 thousand, even this frequency is not so unambiguous. This topic causes constant controversy on automotive forums. This can be explained by the fact that if the manufacturer suggests replacing after 40 thousand, then after 5 thousand the efficiency and power of the engine drops sharply. This suggests that the filter is clogged disproportionately to the car's mileage.

How to determine the replacement interval The fuel system has a filter element. Dirt lingers on it. A vacuum is obtained between the pump and the filter, which increases with the level of pollution. Therefore, the replacement should be performed at the time of the appearance of this very discharge.

On Nissan models there are special sensors for this. Professionals claim that special indicators are installed on Nissan injection engines to help determine the level of pollution.

"Kia"

Everything here is similar to Hyundai. Replacement of the Kia fuel filter should also be carried out at intervals of 20-30 thousand kilometers. But you need to focus on how the car drives. If efficiency and dynamics have fallen, there will be a replacement.

"Toyota"

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the Toyota fuel filter should be replaced every 80 thousand kilometers. The filter is located in the gas tank. To access it, you need to dismantle the rear seat cushion.

But such a huge figure is relevant only for original filters.

Those that are sold with us rarely work out even 30 thousand. And our fuel makes the figure of 80 thousand simply unrealistic. Listen to your car, you will know when the filter needs replacing.

Ford

The manufacturer recommends changing the filters every 20 thousand kilometers. This figure is closer to reality. Replacement of the Ford fuel filter must be performed at every scheduled maintenance. In different cases with "Mondeo" and "Fusion" it is recommended to perform a replacement after 15 thousand.

Visually, any fuel, be it diesel or gasoline, is a crystal clear liquid. However, in reality, it contains a lot of various chemical additives, additives, deposits and even water. And what is most offensive, it is simply impossible to determine the true quality of fuel outside laboratory conditions. This is what some gas stations use, selling often diluted gasoline to motorists with many unnecessary cetane-enhancing additives and road dust.

Low-quality gasoline primarily affects the state of the fuel system. The longer the car runs on diluted fuel, the more carbon deposits in the engine and filter deposits build up. Various resins and condensation can significantly reduce the life of the motor. Therefore, to reduce these risks, car manufacturers complete their cars with special fuel filters. It is they who take the brunt of the blow, cleaning the fuel from large dust particles and unnecessary tar. Accordingly, its service life is not unlimited.

How often should the filter be changed?

Experts assure that for the well-coordinated operation of all engine systems, this element must be changed at least once every 10-15 thousand kilometers. Some motorists ignore this rule, trying to save money. cash... But in fact, by this action, they only aggravate the situation, which is fraught with expensive repairs, and sometimes even the replacement of some units.

Why is it so important to observe the replacement frequency?

Having exhausted its resource, a worn-out filter is no longer able to provide normal fuel filtration. As a result, the fuel with a mass of dirt and resins goes straight into the combustion chamber, where at the end of the cycle iCE operation transforms into a persistent plaque - carbon deposits. If this is not prevented in time, engine coking will be inevitable. But when there is a lot of soot in the engine, it becomes less productive, and it consumes more fuel than before. Freezing is possible in winter due to condensation fuel lines, which is why it is simply impossible to start the engine. Thus, the filter absorbs all low-quality impurities and deposits that were in the fuel, and thereby ensures the coordinated operation of the engine.

How to change the fuel filter? Replacement signs

Several symptoms should be highlighted in which the car needs to be replaced with this part. First, it is the uneven operation of the engine. The motor starts to triple, sometimes even "sneeze" on the move. Secondly, with a dirty filter, you will feel a significant drop in power. Vehicle dynamics decreases, while fuel consumption increases.

The extreme degree of filter clogging is the inability to start the engine. Most often, in such cases, he needs decarbonization or replacement of candles. But you should not hesitate with replacing the filter, but it is best to control the mileage and make this repair every 10 thousand kilometers. If this rule is followed, the car will thank you with stable engine operation and acceptable gas mileage.

Where is the fuel filter located?

It is worth noting that the location of this part may vary depending on which year the car was produced and which manufacturer. Where is the fuel filter on modern cars? Most often, manufacturers install it between the tank and the gas pump. This is the most common installation pattern for this part. Sometimes it is mounted directly into the tank.

DIY replacement: preparing tools

Before replacing the fuel filter, a minimum set of tools must be prepared. Depending on the specific car model, you need to have keys of 10, 17 and 19 millimeters. Thick rubber gloves are also desirable. Thanks to them, the ingress of gasoline on the surface of the skin of the hands will be excluded.

Safety regulations

Before telling how to change the fuel filter, we note that on some cars, this repair is not complete without the use of a manual or hydraulic jack. Most often, owners of cars with low ground clearance resort to this action. In this case, the machine must always be supported. As the latter, you can use brake shoes, or just building bricks. And of course, when working with a jack, you must put the car on the handbrake. Otherwise, the slightest movement of the support can provoke a fall or collision of the car directly on you.

It must also be said that each car has its own, the safest point for installing a jack. You can find out about it in the instruction manual of your vehicle... Before changing the fuel filter, you need to carefully fix the bottom part on the supports.

To do this, put one or more bricks, and put a thick piece of rubber in the place of their contact with the body. The latter will significantly soften the force of pressure, thereby preserving the fragile elements of the bottom from deformation.

Instructions

So how do you change your fuel filter? "Priora", "Kalina" and other modern "cars" are being repaired as follows. First, the negative terminal is disconnected from the battery. This action is not necessary, but it will prevent the possibility of short circuits (after all, gasoline is a very explosive substance). Then, using a 17 or 19 mm wrench, the worn filter is clamped. A 10 key is used to unscrew the fitting of the mechanism. Be very careful as there is a risk of skin or eye contact with residual gasoline. Before doing this, place a small container under the filter so that the fuel flows into it (and not onto the garage floor, as is often the case).

Having unscrewed the union, it is necessary to loosen the clamp and finally pull it out. How to change the fuel filter? After removing the fitting, you can safely remove the filter itself. It should be remembered here that this element has its own polarity, which is indicated by a special arrow. Remember its location - the new filter must be mounted in the same direction as on the worn one.

After removing the old part, you can safely start installing a new one. It is carried out in the reverse order similar to removal. We have already talked about the main nuance about arrows and polarity, but besides this, one more point must be highlighted. When replacing the filter, the retaining clip must also be changed. This action is not necessary, but it will ensure longer filter life.

To prevent the jet of fuel from hitting you when replacing, reduce the pressure first. This is done by pressing your finger on the ramp spool. There is another alternative way. To do this, remove the fuse and leave the engine running on idling until it stalls.

How to check if the installation is correct?

Before changing the fuel filter, "Kalina" and "Priora" must be put on "gear" or on the hand brake. Since you will be doing most of the work under the bottom, it is important that the machine does not roll downhill in one direction or another.

After the completion of the work, you must make sure that they are correct. To do this, you need to turn on the engine and look at the state of the fuel filter. The injector will spray fuel normally only if there are no holes in the system. In simple words, when the engine is running, there should be no gasoline leaks from the filter. If you notice a hole, it is most likely the rubber rings. In this case, they must be replaced. On this, the question of how to replace the fuel filter with your own hands can be considered closed. In total, we spent about 400 rubles of money and 20 minutes of time.

Conclusion

As you can see, a simple replacement. It is important to establish the fuel filter (diesel or gasoline), as they say, by the marks. If the polarity is not respected, the part will not provide normal retention of gums and deposits contained in the fuel.

In this case, all this dirt will penetrate into the engine, which is extremely dangerous and undesirable. Therefore, install the fuel filter correctly and carefully monitor its service life. remember, that timely replacement this part prevents costly engine repairs, which means it saves you money and time.

Any, even the most high-quality automobile fuel, be it gasoline or diesel fuel, contains a large amount of impurities that cause great damage to the engine. And in order to minimize this very harm, to extend the life and ideal operation of the engine, each car has a special fuel filter. But he also needs continuous care, but, most importantly, it must be replaced regularly. Today we will tell you how to replace the fuel filter.

The filter device is the most important part of the fuel system. It filters and neutralizes rye / dirt particlescontained in containers where fuel is stored and transported. In addition, it “frees” the working mixture from water inclusions that form on the surface of the gas tank. Due to the chemical processes taking place during the operation of the engine, impurities enter the fuel, and then into the power unit, killing it. The main purpose of the filter element is to destroy water, since its presence in the working mixture leads not only to wear, but to the “death” of the motor. The filter element allows power unit work accurately, without failures.

Types of fuel filters

Varieties of filter elements

Depending on which fuel the vehicle is oriented to, a specific filtering device is installed in it. Let's talk a little more about them.

Carburetor filter

Since the carburetor engine has a low pressure, the working mixture enters the engine through special rubber hoses. Exactly the filter element "cuts" into them... It can be a plastic or metal product. The product has 2 pipes (inlet / outlet). For maximum reliability, the hoses are secured with special clamps.

Injector filter

The feature of this item is - transfer of the key function to the central the electronic unit ... The working mixture enters the engine under high pressure, which implies the presence of metal fuel lines the highest quality... If we talk about the fuel pump itself, then it is made of steel or other especially strong metals. Threaded elements are used as connectors.

Diesel filter

Diesel fuel is considered the "dirtiest" from those existing today, it involves increased purification from all kinds of impurities. The greatest danger to the internal elements of the car is paraffins. They, transforming into crystals, clog up the main gaps in the parts. Therefore, vehicles powered by diesel fuel, as a rule, are equipped with two filtering devices - the main one and the additional one. This allows you to clean the fuel from unnecessary impurities by 100%.

Varieties of filters

In addition, vehicle-mounted filter elements differ in the following characteristics:

  • degree of cleaning (coarse / fine);
  • type of casing (metal / plastic);
  • working pressure (high / low);
  • type of fuel (diesel / gasoline).

Where is the filter in the car

Before moving on to the question of how to replace the fuel filter, you need to figure out exactly where it is located. Guided by the task set for the filter element, the most logical place for its location is on the way from the gas tank to the engine.

Moreover, the location of the filter at different brands machines are very different.

For example, Japanese manufacturers make a filter in the same housing as a gasoline pump. Install the device directly in the gas tank. But this design has two significant disadvantages:

  • you can only replace the fuel filter at a car service;
  • often the breakdown of this device is immediately followed by the replacement of the entire assembly.

Talking about domestic auto industry, then on the VAZ "classic" the filter is located under the hood, this contributes to convenient control over the state of the TF and its quick replacement. At later lada cars the filtering device was "hidden" in rear beam, under the bumper.

Well, if we talk in general terms about the most popular points of the fuel filter location, then we can list the following:

  • rear bumper;
  • in a niche on the bottom;
  • in the fuel tank;
  • engine compartment or in the engine compartment.

Separator / FPO can be installed separately (on the frame) in the vehicle.

Fuel filter location

Frequency of replacement of the filter device

The working life of the filter element is influenced by many conditions: the quality of the fuel being poured, technical condition fuel system, vehicle operating conditions, etc.

  • nozzles are clogged and oxidized;
  • rust is formed;
  • low-quality fuel is used;
  • the installed filter itself was of poor quality.

During the operation of the car, deposits form inside the rubber / copper pipes in the fuel system, and oxides and rust accumulate on the metal elements. This means that the more years the car is, the faster its filtering device clogs up.

Therefore, not only the mileage on the speedometer should be the reason for replacing the fuel device.

Symptoms of the need to replace TF

The degree of contamination on filters with a transparent housing can be easily ascertained visually. The filter to be replaced has darkened, and the fuel entering it also loses its transparency.

If a filter of another type is installed in the car, then the following signs will be the signal for replacement:

  1. The car began to twitch while driving (this is especially felt when lifting).
  2. The engine stalls constantly.
  3. Fuel consumption has increased.
  4. The power of the power unit has decreased.

From filling bad fuel in the tank (gasoline / diesel fuel) not a single motorist is insured. As for the quality of the filter element itself, here everyone chooses a product in accordance with the required characteristics and their own financial capabilities.

BUT! When buying a filter element, it is reasonable not to rush for cheapness, but to purchase original filters from trusted manufacturers.

Replacing the fuel filter

Replacing the fuel filter

The main procedure for performing actions when replacing the TF on most types of cars is similar - at the end of the service life of the filter element, the old device is removed, and a new filter is put in its place.

home distinctive feature at different engines is the location of the filter itself... And the complexity of the work and other details depends on it.

For dismantling / mounting of TF in vehicles with different types engines may be required special tool and fixtures. They need to be prepared in advance. Next, we will tell you how to change the TF for each specific type of engine, explaining how to remove the old one and install a new filtering device.

Replacing TF on the carburetor

Have carburetor engine the filtering device is usually located under the hood. It is made of plastics / light alloy metals, and its installation will be simple and straightforward for everyone.

First, it is necessary to remove the clamp on each side, then dismantle the filtering device itself. When installing a new TF, it is extremely important to put it correctly without confusing the direction (inlet / outlet). To make it easier for the car owner to navigate, there is an arrow on the body, which, when installed, should look at the gas tank.

Putting the clamps in place, you need to pump fuel using the handle of the fuel pump. If at this moment a slight whistle is heard, therefore, the tightness is broken. Metal clamps will help to provide reliable fasteners.

Important! The fuel device must not come into contact with the cap on the head and the body of the block.

Replacing the filter on the injector

Replacing the TF on the injector

Working mixture supply to cylinders injection engine occurs under high pressure, and therefore TF for such motors is made metal with threaded fasteners on the connections. The injector TF can be located in the engine compartment or under the bottom.

  1. First, you need to lower the pressure in the system, for which in the safety block, which is located at the gear lever, it is necessary to remove the middle one (usually it is responsible for the operation of the pump).
  2. Then you need to start the engine and wait until it stalls (usually no more than a minute).
  3. Next, using the appropriate tools, the old filter is dismantled and a new one is installed. Here the arrow should point in the direction of fuel flow.

After finishing work, you need to put the fuse in place. Then try to start the power unit.

Surely, the 1st attempt will not bring results, since it takes some time for the working pressure to stabilize in the system.

In conclusion, we will tell you how to change the filter on machines with diesel enginewhich are extremely sensitive to the characteristics of the fuel being poured. The injectors are clogged from a significant amount of impurities, and this affects the correct operation of the power unit.

We have already mentioned above that on diesel cars 2 filters are installed (preliminary / fine cleaning). The second one usually needs to be changed after 10-15,000 km of run. It is located in the front of the car, and in order to get to it, you will need to dismantle a wheel with a fender liner. After that, you need to do the following:

  1. Roll up the tray.
  2. Detach the chip from the water meter.
  3. Remove the fittings by pressing the buttons on the rear wall.
  4. Remove the water level gauge and the bottom plug.
  5. Equip the dismantled parts with new leakproof parts (rubber gaskets / washers supplied with filter).
  6. Place a water meter with a plug on the filter device to be installed, then put it on the machine.

During installation, do not hit the water meter - all work must be carried out with maximum accuracy.

The color marks on the filter device and the color of the fittings will help to check the correctness of the assembly - they must match!

Diesel filter replacement

And in order for the car to start at the end of the work, before installation, you need to fill the new TF with diesel fuel. To expel excess air, you can rotate the starter for 5-7 seconds, after squeezing each nozzle a little. After 2-3 such procedures, small bubbles appear around them. After holding the nozzles on the driver's side, you need to repeat several rotations of the starter. After that, you need to clamp the rest. These steps will help start the car engine.

Don't forget about safety

  1. Before replacing the elements of the fuel system, it is necessary to disconnect the mass on the battery - this way it will be possible to protect against the appearance of an accidental spark and ignition of fuel.
  2. Work is best done at moderate temperatures. If you need to make a replacement in the summer in the heat, then you need to avoid direct sunlight.
  3. It is strictly forbidden to smoke and use open fire in the process of work.

Fuel cleaning should not be negligent - this shortens the service life of the power unit!

The filtering device is not so expensive to save on it, moreover, its replacement does not require great skills and knowledge. Therefore, it makes no sense to save on it. Since replacing a piston or engine overhaul will cost where.
