All about buying and selling cars

Automotive alliances of the world. Who owns car brands? The largest automotive concern

If you decide to purchase new car, then you should pay attention not only to its characteristics, but also to study the information about the manufacturer. Nowadays, the overwhelming majority of enterprises are part of concerns, and do not work alone.

The term "concern" has German-English roots, but it was possible to find its origin in Latin, where the word meant "to mix". The first concern in the world was founded during the reign of the Florentine leader Cosimo Medici, who was actively involved in the transportation of goods to countries in Africa and Asia. Once Lee Yaccoca, the famous American manager, said that in the twenty-first century, the global auto market would be controlled by only a couple of companies. In his judgments, he relied exclusively on world trends, so his prediction came true with the highest accuracy, although many think that it works in our world a large number of independent machine manufacturers. In reality, there are certain alliances, which include car manufacturers.

According to the results of the past 2015, the top 3 world concerns include the American group of companies General Motors, the German alliance Volkswagen Konzern and the largest Japanese automotive association - Toyota Motor Corporation. The GM brand was able to boast of a record level of sales, which sold about ten million cars of its "wards" brands. Let's consider which brands belong to which concerns for 2016.

    General Motors: leader or bankrupt

General Motors has come a long and thorny path of its formation. For seventy-seven long years, no other automaker could surpass its sales level, although in 2009 the management filed for bankruptcy. Much has changed since then. General Motors currently includes such brands as Daewoo Alpheon, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Holden, Opel and Vauxhall Vauxhall). GM also maintains constant cooperation with such brands as Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari, Maserati, Subaru, Isuzu and Suzuki. ... The company, whose main shareholders are the Department of the Treasury and the United Trade Union of the United States of America, is confidently moving forward, developing its production and creating new, more advanced car models. The production facilities of the corporation are located in thirty-five countries, while cars are in demand in nearly two hundred countries.

One of the latest developments from General Motors is the GMC Terrain. The debut display of the updated car was carried out in the spring of 2015. However, there were no changes on the technical side, restaling only affected the external and internal designs. Also recently, the world saw the second generation of pickups GMC Canyon Extended Cab and GMC Canyon Crew Cab. In 2016, the next modernization of the car is expected to be released.

Volkswagen AG: development in spite of everything

Another world famous association car companies is the Volkswagen concern. Few people know that the founder of the company is the German designer Ferdinand Porsche. At the end of World War II, the management of the factories passed into the hands of the British administration, and then Lower Saxony began to head the limited liability company, thanks to which the production of food products, as well as the provision of financial and logistics services, began under the well-known brand. The concern owes its current success to the excellent crisis manager Ferdinand Piëch. As of today, there are 342 Volkswagen Konzern companies, among which Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Škoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini can be distinguished , Scania (Scania), Man (MAN), Porsche (Porsche), Ducati (Ducati) and so on. Despite the global crisis, in 2009 the company managed to increase its profits by selling over six million vehicles. Forty-six factories of Volkswagen produce about twenty six and a half thousand vehicles every day.

The corporation has always been distinguished by very capacious slogans, the main of which is “Das Auto” (“This is a car”), which is both simple and provocative enough, suggesting that other vehicles cannot bear the proud title of “car”.

Spring 2015 was very fruitful for the company - in March the updated station wagon was presented Volkswagen passat Alltrack of the eighth generation, equipped with protective plates of the units, an adapted chassis with off-road modes appeared, and the towing ability increased. Improvements were also made in the electronic part - the picture received from the rear-view camera is displayed on the screen, along with tips about changing the trajectory of movement. If necessary, the system itself can adjust the steering section.

Have not been upgraded and past Volkswagen jetta Hybrid - the car's aerodynamics have been significantly improved, the drag coefficient has decreased.

Toyota Motor Corporation: Drive the Dream

Among the three leaders in automobile concerns, Toyota Motor Corporation was founded the latest. Initially, the company produced looms using a patented technology, according to which, in the event of problems, the equipment had a self-shutdown function. After the sale of the patent, Sakichi Toyoda received the start-up capital for a new business. Having visited Europe and America, the Japanese were determined to develop the automotive industry in their country. The company was initially destined to succeed. Even her name was slightly corrected so that when writing in katakana, the word consisted of eight lines, and eight, as you know, is considered a lucky number. The production developed very dynamically. In 1962, the world saw the millionth car, and only ten years later - the ten millionth. By 1992, every second Sakura resident in the country had a branded car in the garage. In 2009, Toyota ended the year at a loss for the first time in fifty-nine years. Now all the difficulties are in the distant past. The cars of the brand are distinguished by ergonomics, reliability and unique design.

Toyota can brag of a collection of brands, among which Subaru and Lexus can be distinguished.

Among the largest corporations, Toyota has completed the largest amount of car restyling work in the past year. Such models as Toyota Auris, Toyota Auris Touring Sports, Toyota Auris Touring Sports Hybrid, Toyota Avensis, Toyota Avensis Wagon, Toyota Prius +, Toyota Land cruiser 200, Toyota Alphard. The premiere of the production version was the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid with the impeccable quality of the technical part of the power plants.

It's no secret that most of the very well-known car brands are not independent participants in the car market. Every year, the picture of ownership of one brand by another, one way or another, changes: someone completely leaves the market due to low profitability, someone is absorbed by stronger competitors, someone joins forces and creates an alliance. We have tried to collect for you up-to-date information on associations of automakers for the middle of 2018.

Volkswagen Group is a German automobile concern, which includes more than 300 companies, in one way or another, related to the automotive industry and services related to it. Volkswagen Group is the leader among car manufacturers in Europe and the world in the first quarter of 2018.

Similarly, Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Company have a mutual understanding that heralds the creation of a strategic alliance. We are not talking about a takeover or even an exchange of shares - both concerns will remain independent, but will work together on a number of projects, which will allow sharing costs and reducing costs. It can be assumed that we are talking about the development of electric vehicles and drones.

FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) is an Italian-American automaker, whose parent company is registered in the Netherlands. The alliance is headquartered in London. FCA arose in 2014 as a result of the purchase of the American company Chrysler by the Italian holding Fiat. Until the end of 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. included the Ferrari company, but later its shares were distributed among the ultimate shareholders of FCA.

The American company General Motors (GM), which sold Opel to the PSA alliance, directly has only four brands in its "piggy bank": Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC. In the Australian market, Chevrolet owns the Holden brand, a modern the lineup which consists of models of the American manufacturer. GM is also actively working with the Chinese market as part of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile and is involved in the creation of cars under the Baojun and Wuling brands. Do not forget about the Russian market, where the Americans own part of the shares of the GM-AVTOVAZ plant and produce the Chevrolet Niva SUV at the facilities of the Togliatti plant.

The leader of the Asian automotive market, the Nissan-Renault alliance, at the end of 2016 completed the acquisition of a 34% stake in Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), which allows us to state with confidence that the newly formed Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi will become one of the largest automakers in the world for many years to come. ... In addition to "own" brands, the alliance is working with the Chinese manufacturer Dongfeng Venucia Motor Company and is directly related to the Venucia brand.
On the Russian market, the alliance includes the AVTOVAZ Group, which manufactures cars under the LADA, Nissan, Renault and Datsun brands.

Groupe PSA (Peugeot Citroën Automobiles) is a French car manufacturer formerly known as PSA Peugeot Citroën. In March 2017, the PSA group of companies acquired the Vauxhall and Opel car brands for $ 2.3 billion, making them one of the leading car manufacturers in Europe. Such a merger could probably bring Opel back to russian market.

At BMW AG (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, with German - "Bavarian Motor Plants"), everything has been stable since 2003 (acquisition of the Rolls-Royce brand). All three brands, which are part of the holding, periodically undergo planned modernization of the model range, display new cars (for example, BMW X7).

The concern, founded as Daimler-Benz AG in 1926 as a result of the merger of two companies - Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie., Is now called a little shorter - Daimler AG - and produces cars of two brands - Mercedes-Benz and Smart.

In 1960, the concern acquired the Maybach brand in its "kit", which existed as a separate car brand up to 2012. In 2015 mercedes-Benz "Revived" the brand as a subclass by starting production of premium cars based on the S-Klasse.

Hyundai's recently established separate premium brand, Genesis, has expanded to the Korean Automobile Alliance. Hyundai KIA Automotive Group ".

In addition to Toyota and Lexus, popular in the Russian market, Toyota Motor Corporation has cars under the Daihatsu brand. The Scion brand, which also belonged to Toyota, ceased to exist in mid-2016, giving the Russian market the Scion FR-S, now known as the Toyota GT86.

Geely Automobile Holdings Limited, one of the largest Chinese car manufacturers, was established just 22 years ago. In 2010, the company completed the acquisition of Volvo for nearly $ 2 billion. Despite the pragmatism of many automotive experts, the "takeover" did not harm Volvo, and, moreover, its model range is currently being updated.

In 2016, the Chinese-Swedish tandem created a completely new car brand Lynk and Co, the model range of which currently includes 2 crossovers and 1 sedan (concept). The company representatives promise to bring the brand to the Russian market already in 2019.

In 2017, Geely Automobile Holdings acquired 49% of the shares of Proton (Malaysia), 51% of the shares of the Lotus brand (England), and also owns the British company The London Taxi Company, which produces cars for London taxis.

Tata Motors is the largest Indian auto manufacturer, part of the Tata Group. In 2008, the company acquires the luxury car brands Jaguar and Land Rover. The Indians, which are part of Jaguar Daimler Motor Company (not to be confused with Daimler AG), are planning to use the "top" cars competing with Rolls-Royse on the world market.

Almost thirty years ago, the legendary Lee Iacocca predicted that by the beginning of the 21st century, only a few car manufacturers would remain in the world. The former president of Ford and Chrysler perfectly saw the trends in the development of the global auto industry, and therefore it is not surprising that his predictions were almost completely confirmed.

It only seems that there are many independent car manufacturers in the world. In fact, the vast majority of car firms are part of various groups and alliances. To be more precise, Lee Iacocca turned out to be right in everything - at present there are really only a few large car manufacturers left in the world, which actually divided the world car market among themselves.

As for Lee Iacocchi's former place of work - Ford and Chrysler, these pillars of the American auto industry, along with General Motors, suffered the most serious losses during the economic crisis, and they have not known such losses in their entire history. General Motors and Chrysler went bankrupt, and Ford only miraculously survived. However, a very high price was paid for survival. Ford has lost the premium division of the Premiere Automotive Group, which included Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover. In addition, Ford was forced to sell the British supercar manufacturer Aston Martin, get rid of Mazda's controlling stake and liquidate the Mercury brand. Currently, only two brands remain from the once huge Ford empire - Ford itself and Lincoln.

General Motors suffered no less serious losses. The Americans lost SAAB, Hummer, Saturn, but despite bankruptcy, they were able to defend Opel and the most valuable brand - Daewoo. General Motors currently includes Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Holden and Vauxhall. Plus, the American concern has a Russian joint venture GM-AvtoVAZ, which produces Chevrolet Niva SUVs.

As for Chrysler, the American concern is from now on a strategic partner of Fiat, which has already gathered under its wing such brands as Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia. Now Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram have been added to them.

Things are completely different from America in Europe. The crisis also made adjustments to the alignment of forces, but this did not affect the position of the giants of the European car industry. Volkswagen continues to expand its brand collection by acquiring Porsche in 2009. The Volkswagen Group now includes nine brands - Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat and truck manufacturer Scania. It is possible that soon this company will be supplemented by Suzuki - in 2009 the Volkswagen Group bought out 20% of the shares of Suzuki Motor.

The other two largest German automakers, Daimler AG and BMW, cannot boast of such an abundance of brands. Daimler AG produces cars under the brands Mercedes, Maybach and Smart, and BMW, in addition to the brand of the same name, also owns Rolls-Royce and Mini.

Another major global automaker is the Renault-Nissan alliance, which owns brands such as Renault, Dacia, Nissan, Infiniti, Samsung. In addition, Renault owns 25% of AvtoVAZ shares, so from now on the Lada brand is also included in the orbit of influence of the French-Japanese alliance.

Another major French car manufacturer, PSA, owns by Citroen brands and Peugeot.

Of all the Japanese automakers, only Toyota has a good collection of brands - Lexus, Scion, Daihatsu and Subaru. In addition, the truck manufacturer Hino is part of Toyota Motor.

Honda's achievement is much more modest. Apart from the premium brand Acura and the motorcycle department, the Japanese have nothing more to brag about.
In recent years, the Hyundai-Kia alliance has been rapidly breaking out into the ranks of the leaders of the global automotive industry. The alliance currently produces cars under the Hyundai and Kia brands, but the Koreans are planning to create a premium brand in the near future. According to unconfirmed information, it will be called Genesis.

From mergers and acquisitions recent years I would like to note the transfer of the Volvo brand under the control of the Chinese Geely and the purchase of the English premium brands - Jaguar and Land Rover - by the Indian Tata Motor. The most curious of this series is the acquisition of the Swedish brand SAAB by the tiny Dutch supercar manufacturer Spyker.

From the once powerful British car industry, there are now only memories. The most famous British automakers lost their independence long ago, but even small English firms went over to foreign owners. The legendary company Lotus belongs to Malaysian Proton, and MG was bought by the Chinese company SAIC. At the same time, SAIC sold Korean SsangYong Motor to Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra.

All these acquisitions, mergers, alliances and strategic partnerships once again prove Lee Iacocchi is right. IN modern world single firms will no longer survive. There are, of course, exceptions such as the English Morgan, the Japanese Mitsuoka, or the same Malaysian Proton. But these firms are independent in the full sense of the word. Absolutely nothing depends on them in the global automotive industry. But in order to sell cars in hundreds of thousands a year, not to mention millions, you need to have very strong "rear". Which is provided either by partners, as in the case of the Renault-Nissan alliance, or by a whole brood of brands, as the Volkswagen Group practices. But such firms as Mazda or Mitsubishi will experience more and more difficulties in the future. And if Mitsubishi partners from PSA are ready to provide all possible help, then Mazda has to fight alone with all the hardships. And in the modern world it becomes more and more difficult to do it every day. What did Lee Iacocca warn about thirty years ago?
