How to install a relay on a fog lamp. PTF - what is it? Scheme and installation of PTF

Fog lights are a must for every car. They provide additional lighting that helps the driver not to get lost even in very thick fog and not to look like a hedgehog from the famous Soviet cartoon. They save even in the dark, and in heavy rain, and even in snowfall, turning on additional headlights will not be superfluous. At the same time, they can be installed both as standard and as additional ones directly to fulfill the role assigned to them - road lighting. It is the second case that will be discussed: we will tell you about how you can independently connect the "fog lights". And also we will pay special attention to the purpose and use of these headlights themselves.

1. Purpose of fog lights: what role do they play on the road and can you do without additional dimensions?

Fog is a natural phenomenon that is very dangerous for drivers. After all, fog is very small drops of water that hang in the air. If you use the main headlights when driving on a foggy road, there will be practically no effect from them. On the contrary: instead of illuminating the road, the light beam will be scattered and reflected in the water droplets, completely blinding the driver. A particularly negative effect is observed when the short-wave part of the spectrum is used, that is, blue. But the use of red and yellow filters just helps to reduce the effect of reflection and make the visibility much better.

There is another negative feature of fog: an airborne cloud usually does not spread over the road, but hangs at a certain distance from it. As a result, low-mounted headlights will shine “under fog” and less reflect water droplets, which will allow the driver to see the road better. However, such headlights will do nothing if it rains or snows. All that remains is to adjust the color balance of the light that the headlights emit.

For this reason, fog lights are installed on cars. What is their difference? Such headlights usually use a yellow light filter, the beam from which is directed to a height of about 50 cm above the road surface.Thus, the light is not reflected at all from the water and gives good visibility to the driver.

Modern drivers are trying to further improve their car lighting by installing fog lights. True, in this case, many forget about the need to install in parallel with them an automatic light beam corrector. Nevertheless, this provides a number of advantages for the car owner: the light from such headlights even blurs the cut-off line.

Xenon “fog lights” also have the opposite effect: in the dark, they are able to blind the drivers of oncoming cars. Therefore, if the installation of such phrases is not provided for by the design of the car, the traffic police can collect an administrative fine from the owner of the car.

If we talk about "fog lights" in general, then modern drivers very often use them as daytime lighting while driving between settlements (according to the law, which came into force in 2014). The question of whether this should be considered a violation was discussed for a very long time. After all, the law stipulates the use of only headlights, so traffic police officers often stop drivers with "foglights" and reward them with warnings. To avoid this, the fog lights must be turned on simultaneously with the rest of the dimensions, since driving only on them is prohibited. Thus, it is better to just turn on the dipped beam and not spoil the nerves for yourself or the representatives of the law.

2. Requirements for foglights, or which headlights are better to install on your car?

The choice of fog lights is a really responsible task that requires both additional knowledge and special care. Do not forget that even in fairly reputable car dealerships it is very easy to stumble upon defective products illegally imported from the countries of the East. So are "foglights" the same?

Generally, almost all modern cars are equipped with halogen bulbs. They are used everywhere due to their affordable cost. But the xenon headlights, which we have already mentioned, are much higher in price, which explains a number of their advantages:

- amazing durability of use, which can be about 3 thousand working hours;

These headlights give a very intense light that breaks through any fog (but blinds other drivers);

The light intensity of xenon lamps is four times higher than that of halogen lamps;

Differs in focusing accuracy.

Thus, in the choice of fog lamps, most likely you will be guided by your personal wealth. But, in order not to get into a marriage or a low-quality product, it is worth choosing a trusted manufacturer whose products are installed on their cars by the most famous concerns.Such supplier of fog lights is the German company "Osram". Their products are not only very different high quality, but also good manufacturability. Undoubtedly, the most important plus of buying just such branded headlights is the ability to get a warranty card for operation and repair.

Many are also puzzled by the choice of the color of the "fog lights". Despite the fact that many consider only yellow headlights to be effective, there is no difference between white and yellow glass if you use the right light for them.

But let's get away from general characteristics and let's move on to the specifics, which is marking. If you want to independently purchase this device for your car and then install it yourself, you must understand the labeling. So, to drive around the territory of our country, the fog lamp marking must necessarily contain the designation "E22", and this will need to be bought. But the confirmation of the fact that it is "fog" in front of you will be the presence of the Latin letter "B" in the marking. So that you do not get confused when choosing the main headlights, we will give you a complete classification:

"FROM" - this is a dipped beam headlamp, which is made as a separate device for illuminating the road, and is not presented in a complex;

"R" - main beam headlamp, which is also presented as a separate device;

"H" - a headlamp in which only a halogen lamp is installed;

"PL" - headlamp, on which, in addition, there is a diffuser made of special optical plastic;

"S" - block headlamp made of glass.

There is also a difference between fog lights, which are designed for left-hand traffic and for right-hand traffic. In any case, the vehicle lighting will need to be adjusted to suit road rulesvalid in the country of your stay. If fog lights are included in the vehicle, then this requirement also applies to them.

3. Getting started: the process of connecting fog lights.

Installation of any car dimensions must fully comply with the rules road traffic... So, regarding the fog lights, they say that they can only be installed on a car in pairs. Moreover, the distance from the plane lateral dimension the outer edge should not exceed 40 centimeters. But along the lower edge of the lens to the road surface, there should be a distance of no more than 25 centimeters.

Also, the installation of fog lights should take into account the location of the dipped beam headlights. That is, the "fog lights" are installed below the main headlights. The only exceptions are four-wheel drive vehicles, which have high traffic. Fog lights can be installed on them much higher than the main ones (even on the roof or a special bracket), which helps to maintain their integrity. The angle of placement of these headlights also matters:

- vertical angle of illumination from + 15 ° to -10 ° is allowed;

The horizontal permissible angle can range from + 45 ° to -10 °.

As for the operation of "fog lights", their inclusion is allowed only with the simultaneous inclusion of dimensions. But in general, foglights rarely have to be installed on their own, since almost all modern cars they are included, if not in the main, then in an additional package. On some models, you can even find "fog lights" mounted in the main headlamp and covered with a common diffuser. But in any case, the fog lamp will be located below the main one. If they are installed separately, then only on the front bumper with a pre-provided secure attachment. An equally important task for the car owner is the correct connection of such headlights to the car's electrical network.

Description of the process of connecting fog lights

So, if you nevertheless decided to do this on your own and, according to our recommendations, purchased new fog lights, we can proceed with their installation. To do this, you need the following tools and parts:

- directly the "fog lights" themselves;

Block and relay from fog lights;

A button to turn them on, which will be displayed directly in the car interior;

Fuse 15Amps;

Connection wires;

Insulating tape.

It is worth noting that in general, the process of connecting headlights is a bit like the process of connecting a car radio, although there are undoubtedly some differences. Let's divide this process into conditional stages:

1. First of all, you need to remove the terminals from the battery, because you will have to work with current, so it will not be superfluous to protect yourself;

2. We remove the main panel inside the cabin, along which are located the lamps that illuminate the stove regulator - you will need the wires of these lamps;

3. Walk to the very end along this wire and find the two-pin connector to which you need to connect the first contact of the relay;

4. We connect the second wire to the headlight switch;

5. We create a 12-volt circuit by connecting a wire to the relay (the relay can be easily hidden even behind the dashboard);

6. We stretch the contact under the pedals to the battery. It is very important to install a fuse here, and the closer it is to the battery, the better;

7. We send the second contact to the body - we will connect the headlights themselves to it;

8. Now it's up to the fog lights: they have two wires - plus and minus. The advantages of these headlights must be connected to each other and directed towards the battery. As carefully as possible, we lift them onto the relay and connect them to connector # 30. But we immediately send the minuses to the body and connect them with the "opposite" wires;

9. Now we check the performance of the "fog lights" and wrap all the bare wires with electrical tape.

We hope the whole operation to install the fog lamps was crowned with success. If you have any problems, most likely, the matter is in the wrong connection to the relay connectors. In this case, it will be easier to contact a specialist who can very quickly correct the situation. But connecting fog lights is not the end of the process. After all, the connection diagram of such dimensions in most cases involves the use of plugs. What it is? The plugs are protective grilles that protect the headlights from stones and other elements that can violate their integrity while driving.

Also, during operation, it is very important to keep the fog lamps clean, as they require regular polishing. Thanks to this, the clarity of the light beam can be increased.

4. Instructions and recommendations for those who want to install xenon in their fog lights.

We have already mentioned above that the use of xenon headlights has certain limitations. Experts recommend installing lensed fog lights instead. An example of such a model is Hella Micro DE... Despite the fact that such headlights also contain xenon, it immediately gets into place after installation and does not blind oncoming drivers. There are also special xenon bulbs that can be installed in place of conventional fog bulbs. An example is the model Philips D2S... But it is not recommended to install them on standard "foglights". Why? There is a whole list of reasons:

1. The use of reflex "fog lights" significantly affects the change in the focus of your headlight. If we compare the filament of the usual halogen lamp and the xenon arc, then the latter is thicker and it is much more extended upward.

2. Xenon headlights illuminate oncoming drivers. Why is this happening? The fact is that almost all halogen fog lamps have an opaque cap. It is thanks to him that the direct ray of light is delayed. Since the body of xenon is larger than a halogen arc, then when installing it, the cap has to be broken out, and without it it is impossible to control the light intensity of the headlight.

3. If you install a xenon lamp in a standard fog lamp, it will cease to perform its direct functions - to illuminate the road in foggy conditions. The fact is that xenon emits a very bright white light, that is, driving on such "fog lights" will be as dangerous as driving in high beam.

4. According to the rules of the road, fog lights must be installed slightly lower than the main ones. However, if these headlights are xenon, you may have problems. The fact is that "fog lights" illuminate the road by 10-15 meters. And if it is a bright light from xenon, then all the irregularities will create shadows, and the driver will feel that the entire road is covered with deep holes. It is very inconvenient to move under such lighting.

5. It is not recommended to use xenon as additional lighting for fog lamps. "Fog lights" are intended solely to illuminate the road in front of the car, but if you raise them even a little, you will blind oncoming drivers.

But nobody forbids installing xenon lamps in fog lights. The only thing, in this case, it is better to use the recommendations:

- xenon can only be inserted into lensed optics in order to correctly direct the light beam;

5. Features of the operation of fog lights.

Despite the fact that "fog lights" play a very important role in driving a car, in no case can they serve as a substitute for either the dipped beam headlights or, moreover, the main car lighting. After all, they emit less intense light and have a much shorter illumination range.

However, in conditions of limited visibility and the main headlights are off, it is the "fog lights" that very well influence the driver's perception of the road. In addition, the car becomes more visible to other road users and does not blind them. Paradoxically, fog lights are not able to significantly improve visibility during snowfall or rain. Although their inclusion gives a certain effect, its importance should not be overestimated.

We have already mentioned the main characteristics of the headlights themselves and the features of their installation above, so we will not focus on this again. The main thing is not to save on the headlights themselves and not to overestimate your strength during the connection. If, after studying our article, you realized that you cannot cope on your own, it is better to involve a friend in this process or even contact a service station. Do not forget that you will have to work with the car's electrical network, which can be very easily disturbed. In any case, it is imperative to install "foglights", and in this matter we, as always, wish you success!

Fog lights are designed to generate a flat and wide beam of light over the road surface. This direction of the light beam minimizes illumination of the fog volume in thickness and improves visibility from the driver's seat. Failure to comply with the rules and wiring diagram for fog lamps when installing them on their own can lead to accidents.

Requirements for installing foglights

The location of the fog light lamps is allowed directly in the headlights.

The rules for installing headlights are regulated by two regulations:

  • GOST 8769-75 or standard CMEA 4122-83;
  • state standard of the Russian Federation GOST R 41.48-2004, corresponding to UNECE Regulations No. 48.
The location of the fog lights on the car

The generalized requirements are as follows:

  1. The installation site is located at a distance of no more than 400 mm from the side surface of the body vehicle... The distance is measured between the lateral plane and the outside of the headlamp.
  2. Only two fog lamps can be installed. The standards separately stipulate the mandatory installation of foglights on tourist buses, as well as in transport operated on mountain roads.
  3. The lower edge of the anti-fog lighting device is located at a distance of at least 250 mm from the road surface.
  4. Fog lights must have a horizontal viewing angle within the range from + 15º to -10º, and vertically - from + 45º to -10º. It is inadmissible to obscure the headlights with vehicle parts within the specified angles.
  5. Fog lights must be connected in parallel with the side lights.
  6. Fog lamp diffusers shall emit a beam of light below that of dipped-beam lamps.
  7. The use of transparent filters or selective yellow is acceptable. It is unacceptable to use glasses of different colors on the same car.

The standards do not have special instructions for installing fog lights on cars, so the owner can install their kit on his own.

What do you need to install fog lights?

For self installation fog lamp requires a minimum tool kit. The car owner must have the knowledge and skills to work with electrical wiring, since the safety of the car as a whole depends on the correct installation.

Set of tools:

  • colored electrical circuit car;
  • nippers or side cutters;
  • a knife for cleaning wires;
  • pliers for crimping terminals (terminal block);
  • soldering iron.

A set of materials required for installation:

  • a set of fog lamps suitable for installation in standard holes in the bumper or universal ones that are mounted on the surface of the bumper;
  • stranded copper wire with a cross section of 1.5-2 mm² with insulation capable of operating at low temperatures and resistant to gasoline and oil vapors;
  • relay for switching on (usually standard relays for turning on headlights from front-wheel drive VAZ models are used);
  • external housing for installing a knife fuse;
  • knife fuse for 30 A;
  • control key suitable for the interior design (preferably with a backlight lamp);
  • connectors and terminals for connecting wires to circuit elements;
  • heat shrink tubing of suitable diameter;
  • insulating tape on a polyethylene or cloth base;
  • plastic ties;
  • automobile corrugated hose for wire laying.

Connection diagram

For installation, two schemes for connecting fog lights are possible:

  • parallel;
  • consistent.

When connected in parallel, the positive wire goes to each headlight from the relay contact. The relay is powered through a 15 A fuse, which is sufficient for most fog lamp models. It is advisable to place the fuse as close as possible to the battery terminal.

Signal voltage + 12V should appear only with active ignition. This measure excludes the possibility of headlights working when the engine is off. If desired, you can provide auto ignition of the headlights after turning on the ignition. For this, the signal wire is connected to the battery charging warning lamp in the instrument cluster. The button must be on.

Parallel connection

Daisy chain connection reduces current consumption and lamp brightness. A similar scheme is used to use foglights instead of headlights head light.

Serial connection

The connection of additional headlights through the relay is demonstrated in the video tutorial from the AUTOELEKTRIKA - Steel Horse channel.

How to install and connect with your own hands?

Installing fog lights on your own begins with the development of a connection diagram. A properly designed circuit avoids unnecessary wires and ensures reliable operation of the electrical circuit. Installation work is recommended to be done in a garage, although many owners install outdoors.

Installing PTF in the front bumper and tuning

There are three installation methods:

  • into regular openings;
  • on an external bracket;
  • in a blank bumper, not intended for the installation of headlights.

Customization is done using the homemade template below. The template is installed perpendicularly at a distance of 5 m from the car headlights. Adjustment is made until the upper edge of the light spot coincides. The coincidence line is located 100 mm below the height of the center of the lamps.

Approximate view of the template for customization

Adjusting the fog lights provides increased driver visibility and reduces the risk of glare from oncoming traffic.

Installing PTF in a blind bumper

The most difficult and time-consuming option is to install fog lights in a blind bumper (i.e., not having factory holes for this):

  1. Dismantle the bumper from the vehicle in accordance with the instructions for repair and operation.
  2. Determine the optimal installation location for the headlights in terms of body shape and compliance with regulations.
  3. Make a hole for the headlights. The best way is to drill holes around the perimeter and sawing the gaps with a file. The hole has to be adjusted to ensure proper fit between the body and the decorative frame. Small fragments of the bumper are carefully cut off with a construction or clerical knife.
  4. Drill holes for the fog lamp housing, which is secured with suitable bolts.
  5. Install the headlamp in the housing and fit the protective strip. She clings to the plastic bumper.
  6. You can adjust the headlight using the special key included in the kit.

Installation of PTF on an external bracket

Mounting option for foglights on a steel bracket:

  1. Mark the attachment points of the bracket to the bumper in accordance with the requirements for the installation of fog lights. As a rule, additional headlights are installed on the bracket.
  2. Screw the bracket to the bumper with self-tapping screws or bolts.
  3. Install the fog lights on the attachment points, connect the wiring.
An example of installing headlights on a bracket

Installation of PTF in standard openings

In order to put the headlights in a bumper with standard plugs, you must:

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle by padding a wooden block 150-200 mm high under the wheels. For more convenience, you can install the car on a lift.
  2. Remove the protective guards covering the lower section of the bumper.
  3. Unscrew the clips of the standard bumper plugs.
  4. Paste fog lamp into the guides and fix with regular screws. When using non-original headlights, there may be a discrepancy between the dimensions and attachment points. In this case, you have to fit the parts to each other. Below is a photo gallery of the installation of Chinese fog lights in the bumper Hyundai elantra HD.

Broach wiring

When broaching and installing wiring, you must follow the safety rules:

  • disconnect the battery;
  • the cross section of the wire must correspond to the conducted current;
  • the joints must have reliable contact;
  • only wires of the same material can be connected (to reduce electrochemical corrosion);
  • it is advisable to spill twists with solder;
  • the joints of the wires are insulated with a heat-shrink tube or electrical tape;
  • avoid placing wiring connections in locations subject to flooding;
  • to protect against bending and abrasion, it is recommended to protect them with a split corrugated tube;
  • wires are laid parallel to the standard bundles and fixed to them with plastic ties;
  • the power supply circuit of the fog lights is necessarily protected by an individual fuse;
  • when laying the wire, check that there are no hot or moving elements in the path, as well as sharp edges.

Disregard for safe installation electrical wiring leads to overheating of the circuits and a fire that can destroy the vehicle.

Testing wiring and headlights

Approximate wiring sequence:

  1. Carry out preliminary wiring to the fog lamp connectors.
  2. Pass the wires inside the bumper through the corrugated tube.
  3. Withdraw the negative leads from the fog lights and connect to the body. It is advisable to use the standard weight bolts available on the front side members.
  4. Take off front wheel and fender liner (alternately).
  5. Determine the location of the relay. The relay must be used without fail, since direct switching of the lamps with a switch will lead to a quick burnout of the contacts. The relay can be placed in a free space in the standard mounting block or anywhere on the dashboard.
  6. Since the fog lights must work in conjunction with the side lights, the connection is made from the size block. Below are photos of the process of connecting the wiring on a passenger car Volkswagen Polo Sedan.

Installation of the PTF switch

The most common method of turning on fog lights is a button that is installed in a regular place or at any other point in the driver's reach. Regular places for buttons are closed with removable plugs, occasionally they are covered with dashboard material. In this case, you need to cut a hole corresponding to the dimensions of the button body.

A separate item should be considered the installation of a steering column switch block equipped with a rotary fog lamp switch. To get the job done, you may need special tool - screwdrivers with Torx heads and a special wrench for the central bolt of the steering wheel.

Connect the steering column switch in the following steps:

  1. Unfasten the two halves of the steering column trim cover.
  2. Separate the parts, overcoming the resistance of the clips. When disassembling, you must be careful not to break the plastic clips.
  3. Next, you need to remove the steering column switch, which can be removed without removing the steering wheel or with removal. In the first case, it is enough to bend the spring clip, remove the lever and disconnect the connector. After that, another switch is put in and the removed parts are installed in place. In the second case, dismantling of the steering wheel and airbag (if any) is required. The way to remove the pillow is different for each model. The part to be removed must be supported as it may slide off the mountings and break the cable harness.
  4. After removing the pillow, it is required to unscrew the central bolt securing the steering wheel.
  5. Remove the steering wheel, disconnect the plugs from the steering column switch.
  6. Unscrew a few screws securing the switch and remove it from the column.
  7. Install a new unit and reassemble. When installing the steering wheel, ensure that the steering wheel spokes and front wheels are in the correct position. The center bolt must be tightened to the recommended torque.
  8. Connect the power supply and check the operation of the switch box.

An example of installing a new steering column switch lever on a Hyundai Solaris car.

On some European cars, the fog lights are switched using a rotary switch located on the instrument panel. When installing headlights on such a car, you need to remove the wires from the lamps to the plug and install a light switch with a fog control function.

Video

The wiring diagram for the installation of fog lamps is shown in the video filmed for the Car Lover channel.

And so you are going to put the fog lights! but you don't really understand how, it seems like there is a lot of information about this in the net, and there are a lot of schemes too, but let's imagine that you don't understand the scheme, I will try to write a very detailed report that after any person could connect them right near the house, and does not pay money to anyone!

Most Importantly Remove the battery clamps!

i will describe in my Matiz! but this BZ can be connected to anyone! so, let's begin! first what we need!

1) the ANTI-FOGS themselves!

PTF on Matiz!

2) a 15 amp fuse (if you don't want flattery in the fuse box, then the fuse case!

ABOUT THIS IS

3) fog lamp relay! And a block for it)

relay 4-pin and plug to it!

4) the button for turning on the fog lights!

well, and 5) wires, I don’t remember the cross section and how many meters (ask in the store, say about PTFs)

6) a trifle of electrical tape, clamps on wires and all that!

JOB

i didn’t take a picture of anything, so I’ll explain it on other people's photos and on a piece of paper! I’m not a walker, but it’s not important that it’s clear!

and so let's go! according to GOST, it is necessary that the fog lights turn on with current dimensions, (but this does not mean that we will not be able to drive with dimensions but without fog lights), that is, if the dimensions are turned off, then the fog lights button will click empty! but when you turn on the dimensions, you can turn on or off these same fog lights with the fog lamp button!

let's start with the location of the RELAY! you can put it anywhere, even in a common block, I did not suffer and put it behind the dashboard over the mognitola, so I write as I did) remove the black (who did not paint) central ponel, and we see this, and that's where I threw the relay

where the arrows point to the backlight lamps of the stove regulator! there are 2 of them, but we do not need them, follow the wire from them and find a 2-pin connector (since the backlight turns on with the dimensions we need it) and so we will hook the first contact on the relay to this wire ! and so everyone knows how the PTF switches work (I will not explain! so we take the first piece of wire (do not cut it right away) we connect one end to the backlight connector of the stove regulators and the other connector to the button, (do not ask me which connector on the button to connect, I really don't know, I was looking for it by poking, it's not difficult), then we go along the chain and from the button we lead the wire to the relay contact 85 on the diagram (the relay should also be written, if there are no such numbers, then just turn the relay so that the contacts are located as on scheme) everything is the same there

that is, after these actions we already have a 12 volt circuit from the dimensions, then a button that breaks the circuit and then a relay 85 contact)

then we pull contact 87 through the plug under the pedals and pull it to the AKUM! do not forget to put a fuse, it is placed between the plus of Akum and the relay 87 contact (the fuse is closer to Akum) half the way we go further 86 contact of the relay is thrown on the body, or a minus (most often a black wire) would be nice and stretch it to Akum, but this not necessary!

all the last is the fog lights themselves,

let's start with the front of the fog lights installed in a regular place, and from each headlight there are 2 wires plus and minus! with a minus, as always, throw it on the body, or connect 2 minuses from two headlights and a kinte to minus Akum) (it makes no difference! It's just that if you throw wires on the body, then you need to pull less wires! but connect the pluses from 2 headlights and pull into the salon through the same plug as the plus on Akum, ... pulled it out? now lift it up to our relay so that the wires are not visible (just as beautiful) and connect it to the 30 connector, well, it seems, don't collect everything yet, you never know so! so as not to disassemble again! go put the clamps on the Akum ... I'll wait here for now) now turn on the dimensions and check if they work! (of course they work) well, try the foglights, if everything works, then you can hide everything and put it back together, check that it doesn't run anywhere! and insulate all bare wires)

if the fog lights do not work, listen to the relay! it should click if not click then you have incorrectly connected the relay connectors! (in general, it is advisable to check all the connectors not in the car, but aside! that is, collect this whole circuit on the table and then, knowing what to connect to, put everything in the car)

According to the new Rules, you need to drive a car during the day as well as at night with light. It is possible with low beam, running lights or fog lights. Today we will consider: how you can connect fog lights to your car. Fog lights are also useful in fog. To save money, you can connect the fog lights yourself. There is nothing difficult in connecting foglights, and anyone can cope with this task!

When installing the PTF, the electrical circuit for turning on the main light of the car headlights may be useful.

Standard wiring diagram for car headlights.

1. Headlight block.

2. Fuse and relay panel.

3. Steering column switch.

4. Button for three positions in the car.

5. Ignition lock.

6. Dashboard.

And so, the fog lights were purchased, just the ones that are needed for your car model (motorcycle, etc.). Installed. It remains to make the electrical connection of the PTF.

Fog lights parallel circuit

We attach the bulbs with one end to the mass of the car, and twist the other ends and attach the number to the contact 87 our relay.

On 30 the relay contact is supplied plus through the fuse, at least 15 Ampere, plus it is taken to the panel with fuses, it is better closer to the battery.

Now we connect the button for turning on the anti-fog headlights with one end to the car body, and the other end to 86 contact of our relay.

Contact 85 the relay goes to plus 12V, which appear when the ignition is turned on. This plus can be found on the fuse panel.

Automatic inclusion of PTF

If you want the tumanki to turn on automatically when the car starts up, then we connect this wire to the control light "charging" in the dashboard. Button "PTF" in the cabin must be turned on.

You're done! Now, when you press the power button, minus is applied to the relay coil - the relay is triggered and thereby closes the contacts 30 and 87 relay and - our bulbs light up!

Fog lights work!

Economical (sequential) inclusion of PTF

If you use fog lights only for the fact that you should drive during the day with light and are not going to use them in fog. Then two foglights can be connected in series. They, of course, will not "break through" the fog, but during the day it is clear that the car is driving with light.

Thus, we will "kill" three birds with one stone 🙂

  1. Drop in current consumption by 4 times! This means less stress on the generator, relay contacts and wiring. Due to the fact that there is less load on the generator and on the engine as a whole, it is, although a little, but the consumption of fuel consumed will be less.
  2. Since the bulbs shine in the incandescent floor, the lamps will last longer, and also less heating of the fog lights itself and, most importantly, of the glass.
  3. We do not turn on the head light, thereby saving expensive lamps and saving the energy of the car.

Both schemes are suitable for any brand of car, motorcycle, scooter or tractor.

Why does a car need fog lights?

The headlights, side lights and warning brake lights that make up the optical system fulfill their specific functions of detecting cars on the roads and driving at night. In addition to them, fog lights are also installed on many cars. The correct choice and installation will allow them to be used not only in fog, but also in other situations. Not everyone knows what these headlights should be, how to use them for their intended purpose, how they differ from conventional lighting devices.

Most drivers are convinced that these headlights should only have yellow glass or light filters, although the Rules stipulate that the fog lamp filters can be painted white or yellow. They are of the opinion that yellow light travels further in the fog than normal. In fact, color has little effect on the range of light in fog.

In fog lights, the correct direction of the light flux plays a major role. The headlamp forms a wide in the horizontal plane and narrow in the vertical plane, the luminous flux, which is located low above the road surface and directed along it. It is known that fog rarely reaches the ground. Therefore, it turns out that the fog is, as it were, illuminated by the headlights from below.

At the same time, the road is illuminated, and the rest of the space is hidden in the shadow of fog. Thus, the fight against fog is carried out due to a special distribution of the luminous flux. Yellow and white light have in their spectrum the maximum intensity of light energy, compared with which the energy density in red, green, blue, violet light is much lower.

Even the most correctly exposed foglights give road visibility in fog no further than ten meters. But this is quite enough, since in the fog, cars move at extremely low speeds. The advantage of these headlights over conventional headlights is that they also illuminate the roadside, allowing you to see the side lane markings on the roads.

You can turn them on while driving along with the side lights. Some drivers install a red light in the rear that glows brighter than a brake light and parking lights, and allows the driver to notice the car in the fog earlier from behind the vehicle. This lantern is the same as high beam conventional headlights should be turned on regardless of the time of day if fog descends on the road.

Rear red fog lights

Fog lights can be used with safety benefits not only in foggy conditions, but also under normal conditions in the dark. For example, they are extremely useful in the dark on narrow mountain serpentines and winding forest roads, when you need to constantly monitor the shoulder. On such roads, it is recommended to turn on the "fog lights" paired with the dipped headlights. This improves the visibility of the road and shoulder. Correct use of the lighting devices available on the car will allow you to confidently navigate in difficult weather conditions.

Installation of fog lights

Correct installation of headlights has a decisive influence on the effectiveness of their intended use. They are mounted on the bottom front bumper, at a height of at least 25 cm from the roadbed. The number of headlights should be two - one on each side at the same distance from the edges of the car (no further than 40 cm from the extension of the outer side of the lens). The optimum distance between the fog lamps is 120cm.

Due to the fact that the light flux of the fog lamps is clearly limited at the upper edge, the light from them does not fall on the microscopic droplets of fog in front of the driver's eyes and does not reflect from them, creating an impenetrable white wall of light, as is obtained when the main headlights are turned on.

How to choose "fog lights"

  1. By color. The glass on the fog lamps must be milky or yellow color... Optical rays of this spectrum are well scattered in a foggy environment. By purchasing headlights with red or blue glass, you run the risk of running into a fine from the traffic police inspectors, since they cannot be installed in front of the car. One feature should be borne in mind regarding the use of lamps - in headlights with a yellow filter, it is better to use white light lamps, and in headlights with a white filter, it is better to use yellow lamps.
  2. By marking. When choosing a headlight, pay attention to its marking, in which the presence of the letter "E" with one or two numbers in a circle means that it is certified by one of the European countries (the numbers indicate the code of the European state). This symbol is followed by a letter of the Latin alphabet, indicating the type and purpose of the headlight. The letter "B" is selected for the fog lamps. Halogen lamps of categories H1, H3 with one filament and a power consumption of no more than 60W are mainly used as a light source, which form a luminous flux with a wide spectrum of radiation.

Fog light types

There are currently three types of fog lights that are popular among motorists:

  1. LED fog lights are the most demanded and economical type of headlights with low power consumption and long service life. The advantage led headlights there is also a wide range of emission colors, high luminous flux and low heating of the headlights.
  2. Xenon headlights are the most popular type among owners of expensive car brands. The emitted light of these headlights is as close as possible to the sunlight, which ensures good penetration of the fog and reduces the physical stress on the driver's eyes. Compared to conventional headlights, they have an increased resource, higher efficiency, and consume less electricity.
  3. Halogen fog lights - over many technical indicators are inferior to their competitors, but continue to be in high demand among motorists, due to their low cost compared to more fashionable types of "fog lights".
