How to install standard foglights. Installing fog lights

According to the new Rules, you need to drive a car during the day as well as at night with light. It is possible with low beam, running lights or fog lights. Today we will consider: how you can connect fog lights to your car. Fog lights are also useful in fog. To save money, you can connect the fog lights yourself. There is nothing difficult in connecting foglights, and anyone can cope with this task!

When installing PTF, it may be useful electrical circuit turning on the main light of the headlights of the car.

Standard wiring diagram for car headlights.

1. Headlight block.

2. Fuse and relay panel.

3. Steering column switch.

4. Button for three positions in the car.

5. Ignition lock.

6. Dashboard.

And so, the fog lights were purchased, just the ones that are needed for your car model (motorcycle, etc.). Installed. It remains to make the electrical connection of the PTF.

Fog lights parallel connection diagram

We attach the bulbs with one end to the mass of the car, and twist the other ends and attach the number to the contact 87 our relay.

On 30 the relay contact is supplied plus through the fuse at least 15 Ampere, plus it is taken to the panel with fuses, it is better closer to the battery.

Now we connect the button for turning on the fog lights with one end to the car body, and the other end to 86 contact of our relay.

Contact 85 the relay goes to plus 12V, which appear when the ignition is turned on. This plus can be found on the fuse panel.

Automatic inclusion of PTF

If you want the tumanki to turn on automatically when the car starts up, then we connect this wire to the control light "charging" in the dashboard. Button "PTF" in the cabin must be turned on.

You're done! Now, when you press the power button, minus is applied to the relay coil - the relay is triggered and thereby closes the contacts 30 and 87 relay and - our bulbs light up!

Fog lights work!

Economical (sequential) inclusion of PTF

If you use fog lights only for the fact that you should drive during the day with light and are not going to use them in fog. Then two foglights can be connected in series. They, of course, will not "break through" the fog, but during the day it is clear that the car is driving with light.

Thus, we will "kill" three birds with one stone 🙂

  1. Drop in current consumption by 4 times! This means less stress on the generator, relay contacts and wiring. Due to the fact that there is less load on the generator and on the engine as a whole, it is, although a little, but the consumption of fuel consumed will be less.
  2. Since the bulbs shine in the incandescent floor, the lamps will last longer, and also less heating of the fog lights itself and, most importantly, of the glass.
  3. We do not turn on the head light, thereby saving expensive lamps and saving the energy of the car.

Both schemes are suitable for any brand of car, motorcycle, scooter or tractor.

    Dear soap makers! Before you are going to cook soap "from scratch", you must familiarize yourself with the safety rules when working with alkali!

Many modern cars have fog lights in their arsenal. They greatly facilitate movement in poor visibility conditions, and also increase road safety not only for their owners, but also for other participants. road traffic... So, if your car is not equipped with standard foglights, you should think about installing them.

There are many models of fog lights in the modern car market, choose the one that suits you in size, mounting method, body color that matches your car and design that you like. Fog lights can be bought online, at the car market, or in a store, where experienced sellers will tell you the connection diagram and give you a guarantee for the product. Together with the headlights, purchase a relay and a fog lamp block, a fuse, a headlight switch, wires and insulating material. Or purchase an installation kit straight away, which includes all of the above. You can connect fog lights on your own, even if you have a little knowledge of electrics and car design. Or go to a car repair shop, if you doubt your abilities, here they will professionally install the headlights for you, connect an electrician and adjust the direction of the light. By the way, at the present time, the installation of fog equipment of the car is stipulated by the rules of the road, the simplest scheme connecting fog lights.

Before starting work on connecting wires, disconnect the energy source - the battery. Then disassemble dashboard and find the wires that supply energy to the dashboard lights. Trace the path of the wires with your hand to the 2-pin connector. Connect the first wire to the backlight connector, then to the relay switch button and then to the relay itself - you should have a circuit from the vehicle size and relay - terminal 85. Install the relay in the relay and fuse box. In the second step, stretch the 87 contact of the relay - the wire on which you pre-install the fuse (as close as possible to the battery), extend under the pedals and to the battery. The 86th connector has "mass". By the way, contact 85 can be made not from the size, but from the low beam.

Install the fog lights - either in the place of their standard attachment, or by drilling holes in the car bumper, or in the place of special plugs provided by the manufacturers just for this case. The headlights are installed from the inside and fastened with self-tapping screws so that they are firmly fixed in place and do not dangle while driving. Connect the wires to the connectors on the headlights, connect the battery and check the system is working. In order for your fog lights to perform their intended function well, keep them in constant cleanliness and serviceability. Fog lights are often exposed to road dust, small stones, dirt, so they need to be polished from time to time. And car services provide services for booking foglights, this ensures their safety and less exposure to negative factors from outside. In addition, take care of installing special plugs that also perform a protective function.

In order for the fog lights to work with their full declared power, they must not only be correctly installed, but also correctly adjusted. The headlights should be installed at the bottom of the car for better illumination of the road in foggy conditions. And the headlights are adjusted so that the beam of light emanates from the top of the headlight, so the road will be better illuminated.

How to install fog lights?

In today's article, we will focus on how to install fog lights on a vehicle. In addition, we will not bypass some points related to the rules for their installation (according to the SDA GOST 8769-75) and the requirements for them (certificate of conformity according to Regulation No. 19 of the UNECE).

Description

The main purpose of fog lights is to create optimal illumination of the path during fog, heavy snowfall and rain. Also properly adjusted and installed, they are used to illuminate the roadside or instead of low beam

Tools

First of all, we buy a set of fog lights, which consists of:

  • fog lights;
  • the necessary cords and terminals for them;
  • relay for 4 contacts;
  • switch;
  • remote fuse.

Of the tools, you must have the following with you:

  • screwdrivers (cross and flat);
  • keys for 8 and 10;
  • pliers;
  • we also take several auxiliary connectors, several different clamps and fasteners;

After that, once again make sure that the purchased kit is safe and proceed to the next step - installation.

Installation

The first step is to completely de-energize the battery, thereby excluding even the slightest possibility of any short circuit. Next, we inspect the car for mechanical problems that can nullify all the work. Some experts recommend planning the subsequent wiring path in advance.

For convenience, the whole process can be divided into several stages: installation on the bumper, installation of a specific button on the dashboard of the car and the final connection.

Bumper mounting

  1. We remove the crankcase from the bumper, which performs a protective function and, accordingly, the bumper itself.
  2. After it is removed, we will see special recesses for the headlights - as a rule, they are closed with plugs.
  3. We take out the headlights from the packaging and install them in these niches.
  4. Then we fix them with screws.
  5. After that, we pull out the cords from under the hood and fasten them with clamps.
  6. We connect the minus cords to the car body.
  7. Once this is complete, return the crankcase and bumper to their original position. The main thing is not to rush and connect the cords to the plug directly on the headlights. We stretch the other side of the cord inside the car.

Switch installation

  1. Open the panel and the center console trim located under the steering wheel. We do not disregard other components that can create inconvenience during installation. We temporarily get rid of them if necessary.
  2. After that, we take out the plug from the unoccupied button and connect the contact cords to it.
  3. Attention! In some cases, some problems were recorded when connecting a new component to an existing electrical circuit.

Connection

  1. After opening the fuse box, connect the terminal via the headlight start button to a suitable relay (85).
  2. Next, we connect the terminal of the dark cord to the relay, and the other side to the car body.
  3. The terminal, which has 2 cords, is connected to niche 87, and the taps are connected to certain fuse connectors.
  4. After that, we take out the harness located in the hood and connect the terminals to the second fuse connectors.
  5. Remember that we connect the terminal of the red cord to connector 30 using the connector for this. And for the fuse box we put 1 relay and 2 fuses.
  6. After that, we check everything again, connect it to the battery and start the car.

Installation rules and requirements for fog lights

  1. The installation of fog lamps is required only for vehicleused in hiking trails or in mountainous areas.
  2. The allowed number of PTFs for front installation is 2.
  3. The color emitted by one headlamp should not be different from another, but it should not go beyond the range of the white or selective yellow spectrum.
  4. Fog lights must be visible in different planes for the minimum acceptable angle of visibility.
  5. None of the PTF holes shall be located higher than the hole on the dipped beam headlamp.
  6. And finally, it is worth noting that it is worth purchasing only those headlights on which there is an official mark, consisting of a circle with the letter E and the subsequent country number.
  1. Keep the diffusers clean at all times, as they will reduce light levels if they become dirty.
  2. Fog lights cannot be washed with water (snow). Only polishing is allowed. This can be done in any workshop.
  3. It is always necessary to keep spare lamps and fuses inside the car.

Now you know how to install fog lights. If you strictly follow the proposed instructions, then problems should not arise.

Road safety is highly dependent on the quality of the lighting. One of the elements of external lighting are, but they may not be included in the basic equipment of the car. The article gives advice on how to install fog lights correctly, the requirements for installation, and the methods and connection diagrams.

Requirements for installing foglights

The purpose of the fog lights is to illuminate the roadway in poor visibility conditions: during fog or atmospheric precipitation. During fog, the headlight reflects off the water droplets, forming a white wall in front, which makes it impossible for the car to move further. If the fog lights are correctly adjusted, then the light from them will be pressed against the road, and the road in front of the car will be illuminated at a distance of 10-12 meters. The driver has the right to decide for himself whether to turn on additional lighting or not.

Despite the fact that PTFs are optional lighting equipment, when installing them, you must comply with certain requirements and know how to connect fog lights. If the accepted standards are violated, problems may arise during the passage of the technical inspection or an administrative penalty may be imposed.

When installing fog lamps, the following standards must be observed:

  • there must be a distance of at least 25 cm from the roadway to the headlights;
  • PTFs must be located symmetrically at a distance not exceeding 40 cm from the side plane of the machine (along the outer edge side lights);
  • you can turn on foglights only together with the dimensions;
  • if xenon is used in the headlights, then they must be marked "D" and an automatic corrector must be installed.

Tools and materials

Before purchasing PTF, the motorist must decide on the place of their installation. Some cars have special bumper plugs for fog lights. In this case, the size and shape of the headlights must be matched to the dimensions of the holes. If the PTF will be mounted at the level of standard optics or on the roof, then the shape and size do not matter. It is important that the kit includes reliable fasteners.

When choosing a PTF, you should decide on the type of lamps. Xenon can only be installed in specially designed headlights.

When choosing, you should pay attention to the following factors:

  • material of manufacture - resistant thermoplastic;
  • the body must be collapsible and sealed;
  • it is better to choose an aerodynamic shape, which reduces noise when driving.

When using polycarbonate as glass, it is better to cover the glass with a protective film, then they will remain transparent for a long time.

For self installation you need to purchase not only headlights, but also prepare other materials:

  • wires;
  • terminals for connecting electrical wires;
  • pTF switch in the form of a button or handle;
  • fuse with a rating of 20-30 A;
  • 4-pin relay.

In addition, you will need a standard set of tools to complete the work. To protect the on-board network, the connection is made through a relay (the author of the video is PRO.Garage).

Ways to connect fog lights

The PTF can be connected in several ways. The easiest one is if the car from the factory provides for the connection of fog lamps, that is, the wiring diagram consists of all the necessary components: connecting connectors, a switch, connecting wires, a fuse, a relay.

Installation, in this case, consists in installing the headlights and connecting them to the mains. This method can be used when complete set cars, if you need to replace the installed fog lights or to improve the lighting system.

When buying a PTF kit, you need to make sure that the installation parameters and connectors correspond to the factory ones.

If in basic configuration the car does not have fog lights, you will have to lay the wiring yourself. To do this, you need to purchase the necessary components: a set of wires, a relay, a switch, etc. You can purchase a ready-made kit for mounting fog lights. Know how the fog lights turn on (video by Morgan One).

Some drivers question whether fog lights can be connected to the dimensions. This cannot be done, since the switch and wiring in the side lights are not designed for the current consumed by the headlights.

Having bought a universal fog light connection kit, you can connect the fog lights with your own hands using the following algorithm:

  1. The wiring must begin with dismantling the dashboard and connecting the relay.
  2. First you need to find the wire going to the instrument lighting. Following these wires, you can find a block in which there is a free connector to connect the fog relay to it.
  3. The second step is to connect the switch. If there is a free button on the dashboard, connect the headlights to it. If there is a free button, then you need to install a new one.
  4. In the next step, the relay must be connected to the battery. Wire from battery must be connected to pin 87 of the relay. It is more convenient to run the wire under the pedals.
  5. It is important to include a fuse in the circuit during installation. This will save the lamps from burning out and save you from fire in case of a short circuit. The fuse rating is based on the power of the headlights. If we take 60 W bulbs, then the current for powering the headlights will be: 2 * 60 W / 12 V \u003d 10 A. The fuse must be selected with a higher rating. In this case, a 15 A fuse must be used.
  6. Now we mount the PTF in the bumper. Before installing the fog lights, you need to mark the places for the headlights according to the requirements. Installation of PTF is better on the removed bumper. After mounting, the headlights must be securely fixed using the fasteners that come with the mounting kit.
  7. The negative wire must be shorted to ground (car body), the positive wire must be connected to the 30th contact of the relay.
  8. At the final stage, the relay is installed in the seat and fixed. The instrument panel returns to its original place.

Connection diagram for tumanok

The second contacts must be connected to the positive terminal of the battery. They also need to be connected together and the wire connected to pin 87 on the relay.

Then the relay contacts must be connected in the following order:

  • 30 is connected through a fuse to the positive terminal of the battery;
  • 86 either to the mass of the car, or to the negative terminal of the battery;
  • 85 is connected to the battery positive through a switch and a PTF fuse, which is included in a circuit with a 30 contact.

The button for turning on the fog lights is mined in a place convenient for the driver on the instrument panel. The relay is placed in the mounting block, where you can find a free connector for fog lamps. You can use one of the fuses in the fuse box.

At the heart of another scheme, the previous version is used, only the positive wire is connected not to the battery, but through the ignition switch. In this case, the fog lamp button is not connected to the battery through a fuse, but to any power wire in which voltage occurs when the ignition is on. Since according to this scheme, the foglights can be turned on only after the ignition is turned on, you can not worry about leaving them on when the engine is not working. To comply with the rules of connection to the current legislation, the button pTF inclusion connect to the external light switch of the machine.

Conclusion

Fog lights can ensure safe movement of the car in bad weather. On modern machines they are installed at the factory. If the car does not have fog lights installed, then knowing how to install and connect them, you can perform the installation according to the PTF connection diagram yourself. The installation must be carried out in accordance with the requirements so that there are no problems with technical inspectionand also to avoid problems on the road with traffic inspectors.

It is important to remember that before turning on the fog lights, you need to turn on the dimensions.

The car "Lada Granta" comes from the factory in three trim levels: "Lux", "Norma", "Standard". In this case, only the first of them receives fog lights. The second and third places for the installation of "fog lights" are, there is a corresponding button on the panel, but the headlights themselves are not. The connection of the PTF can be entrusted to the service station specialists, but it is cheaper and more pleasant to install them yourself according to the ready-made scheme.

Rules for installing "fog lights" on Lada

Competently installed PTF help the driver to drive in difficult road conditions... Traffic rules strictly regulate the height of the headlights, their color, as well as the position of light spots on the road.

Where can I install PTF

In the design of the modern "Grants", the installation locations are precisely worked out: under the license plate, on the sides. Some bumpers even have indentations ... Anyway for correct installation the front bumper of the car must be removed.

But before that, you should go shopping and find the necessary parts. Today's market offers both recessed bumpers and bumpers with already installed headlights... The choice, as always, remains with the owner.

Instructions for installing headlights for "dummies"

The whole process of equipping the car with "foglights" can be divided into several stages:

  1. Removing the bumper.
  2. Installation of headlights.
  3. Wiring.
  4. Headlights connection.
  5. Assembling the parts in reverse order.

Removing the front bumper

The bumper of "Grants" is a single whole with the radiator grill, therefore, in order not to distort the latches under the fenders, it is advisable to remove it together with your partner.

DIY headlight installation

For "Lada Grants" today, two types of headlights are offered:

  • Bosch - with flat glass;
  • Kirzhach - convex glass.

Both those and other headlights are standard, so their choice remains with the consumer.

What tool is needed

In addition to headlights, for the equipment of a PTF vehicle, you must have in stock:

  • self-tapping screws (6 pieces for mounting headlights);
  • drill;
  • set of drills;
  • countersink or skin;
  • stationery knife;
  • sealant.
  1. A hole up to 10 mm in diameter is drilled in the center of the oval under the headlight.
  2. Starting from this hole, cut a circle along the inner diameter with a clerical knife.

    It is better to cut the hole in several steps so that the hand does not slip and ruin the bumper.

  3. A hole is processed with a sandpaper or countersink, the contour of which should be equal to the outer diameter of the headlight.
  4. Using self-tapping screws, install the headlight in the bumper.
  5. The slots remaining after work are filled with sealant.

The last point of the instruction is optional. However, experts recommend not to neglect it, otherwise dirt, snow or water may get into the cracks.

The above steps are repeated in the same sequence to install the second headlight.

How to wire and connect a headlight

To connect the PTF, you will need various tools:

  • mounting kit for connecting fog lights on "Grant". It includes a button, relay, interior wiring, under the hood wiring;
  • corrugation (for example, 9 mm for the interior and 16 mm for the hood);
  • insulating tape;
  • drill;
  • set of drills;
  • head 10 mm;
  • key 13 mm.

The connection plan for the fog lights looks like this:

  1. Take out the battery.
  2. Unscrew the screws securing the platform under it.
  3. Sliding the panel to the side, loosen the bracket nut, removing the fuel pipes.
  4. The wire begins to run from the right headlight through the mudguard, then under the compressor, generator and cooling fan.
  5. The wire from the second headlight is routed through the left mudguard.
  6. IN engine compartment connect both wires. Then they are laid in a corrugation.
  7. Pass the corrugation under the ABS unit next to the headlight hydrocorrector tubes, inserting these tubes into the passenger compartment through the rubber bands.

Finished with wiring under the hood.

Now you can reinstall the battery and attach the bumper. The diagrams below show where you can attach the earth terminals on the right side.

The terminals are also fixed on the left side in the same way.

PTF connection in the cabin

The power button can be made in two ways:

  • using the button supplied with the mounting kit;
  • through the standard system of the light control module (LMC).

How to put a button

The first method is described in detail in the instructions for the set. This is how the installation diagram will look like using the button from the installation kit.

It's worth mentioning the connection rules here. The blue wire is connected to the "plus" of the ignition, the white wire is connected to the "plus" from the side lights, and the black wire is connected to the "minus". A relay must be present in the system. The current strength with the headlights working reaches 35 A, so the button will not last long without it. The relay is powered from the fuse box or directly from the battery, as shown in the diagram.

Scheme using ICC

This option is more complicated, but it allows you to display the indication of the "fog" on the dashboard. In addition to the mounting kit, you will need to purchase Lira-type terminals (large and small).

In addition, an ICC block from Lux Grants will be required. There are two types of this module on sale, the differences between which are the presence of one more switch position and additional contacts. The price of ICCs also differs by almost a third.

Required tool:

  • soldering iron;
  • insulating tape;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • phillips screwdriver;
  • wrench 22 mm long handle.

The installation order looks like this:

  1. The fuse box cover is fixed with clips, so to remove it, just pull it towards you.
  2. Unscrew the three screws holding the instrument cluster panel: a pair at the top, one under the fuse box.
  3. The combination itself is held by four screws. Unscrew them, then, sliding it to the side, remove the connection connector. It is held by a special switch that is turned to the side.
  4. Then the steering column trim is removed.
  5. We got to the ICC. Unscrew one screw above it, remove it from the block. On the sides there will be two latches that are squeezed out with a screwdriver.
  6. Remove the handle from the headlight hydrocorrector by pulling it towards you, then release the nut holding it on the panel, sink it inward, move it down a little.
  7. Now unscrew the screw that secures the fuse box.

    For convenience, slide the steering column up until it stops.

  8. By removing the screw and moving the block to the left, release it from the mounts. Then it must be turned over, having previously removed several relays on the left side.
  9. Connect the pink wire from the ignition and the blue wire from the mounting block, this will give a plus to the circuit. Solder the junction, then isolate it.
  10. Next, look for empty spaces on the fuse box for the sockets F16, F17 indicated in the diagram below.

    Fuse F18 is indicated next to it. You can install it in advance if you plan to make seat heating in the future.

  11. Now on the ends of the wires coming from the "fog lights" put on big "Lyres", insert them into the fuse box. The left headlamp is switched on to fuse 17, the right - to 16. The two remaining fuses must be connected to the power relay, as shown in the diagram.

    You can do without a relay, because the ICC from "Lux" has its own. But it is safer to use an external relay and a thick power wire.

    Then an additional wire is output to the instrument cluster to indicate the headlights are on, connecting to pin 15.

  12. The whole structure is assembled in the reverse order. From now on, the inclusion of fog lights will be provided through the ICC, like the rest of the head lighting.

Video: installation of fog lights and repair of head optics on Lada Grant

"Lada Granta" in the "Lux" configuration already has fog lights. But, having bought the necessary parts, additional headlights can be equipped with other configuration models - "Standard" or "Norm". This work is painstaking, but if you do it carefully, then it will not be difficult. Every driver knows that the price of work at a service station is directly proportional not to the cost of parts, but to the duration of the work.
