In these variants, the car was produced until September 1977, when BMW introduced a completely new six-cylinder engine for the 3 Series. New engine received the M60 code. Later, in a slightly redesigned form, this engine became known as the M20. It has been designed to fill the gap between the small four-cylinder M10 and the larger six-cylinder engines from 2.5 liters and up.

The new engine was named "baby-six" - M60 "little six". The power system of the 2-liter engine was equipped with the same Solex carburetor, the 2.3-liter - with the K-Jetronic injector, similar to that used in the 2-liter M10, but with 6 injectors instead of four. Simultaneously with the engine change, the company made a number of changes to the chassis.

At the end of 1979, new changes were made to the E21 body. Changes to the engine compartment have finally allowed the engine-driven fan to be squeezed into the 6-cylinder models. But in the 4-cylinder, special fasteners for the radiator had to be made in order to leave it in the same place. The interior has slightly changed, in particular - the heating and ventilation control panel. This year, the 4-cylinder M10 engine with an injector, which was produced exclusively for the United States from 77 to 79, is finally a thing of the past. Instead, a modification of the 1.8-liter M10 engine appeared with a new K-JetronicLambda injector and a catalyst.

In the middle of 1983, the production of the E21 body was discontinued due to the appearance of the next - the second "treshki" body with the E30 index. This car was an immediate success, forcing even Mercedes-Benz to launch its famous model 190 (W201).

The premiere of the BMW E30 took place in 1982, when a coupe appeared, and a year later - a 4-door sedan. With the appearance in November 1982 of two-door sedans (also the so-called transitional series, later completely modernized for all units) BMW 316 (1.8 l, 90 hp with carburetor), 318i (105 hp) and 323i (traditional 139 hp inline-six with injection), all models with 5-speed gearbox on request, BMW has proven its viability. In these cars, the emphasis was on comfort, but within the framework of a sporty style, which manifested itself in the interior design: a discreet interior style with functionally executed convenient controls. The success of the model in the first months of sales made it possible to supplement the family program with the 320iA variant (a 2.0-liter 129-horsepower in-line "six" coupled with a 4-band automatic transmission).

But BMW had to expand this model range: at the end of 1984, catalytic converters were installed on the "318i" (with the LU-Jetronic injection system) and the six-cylinder "323" and belatedly replaced the outdated 2.3-liter inline "Six" on the 2.5-liter 171 - strong (325i). In December 1985, new models were launched into production: 325K (with four-wheel drive) and the 325i convertible. These models enjoyed a limited but steady demand among fans of active driving or active pastime. At the same time, production began on the economical 324o sedans with rumbling six-cylinder diesels (the first in BMW history).

In August 1986, fans of the brand were pleased with the appearance of the M3 model with an injection 200-horsepower 6-cylinder 2.3-liter engine. Although due to the obligatory catalytic converter and due to the increased resistance in the exhaust tract, the power turned out to be actually 5 hp. less. Externally, the M3 was distinguished by widened fenders with low-profile tires of the dimension 205/55 R15 and "developed" bumpers and sills. The value of accelerating dynamics (6.8 s to hundreds) for a long time became a dividing line, behind which real sports supercars already began. But the second-hand "emka" should be taken very carefully, because the lovers of "spur" in the majority of the accuracy of driving do not differ (especially here, in Russia).

BMW models of the third series in September 1988 were restyled. New headlights were installed on the cars. The shape of the tail and rear lights has been modernized. In a wide range of engines, a new 100-horsepower 1.6-liter fuel-injected engine appeared, which did not differ in either fuel efficiency or acceleration dynamics. But the rigid suspension and the tachometer needle, jumping half a scale when the accelerator pedal was pressed, made one believe that the "316i" was the brother of the M3, but very small and weak. The first station wagons are dated February 1989 (they were produced until 1994). The range of engines for them was completely identical to that of the sedan. In December 1991, the production of sedans (E30) was discontinued (the M3 coupe back in 1990), until 1994, only Touring station wagons were produced.

The new "troika" with the E36 index replaced the E30 at the end of 1990. All the advantages inherent in the predecessor (EZ0) have been preserved and even multiplied in the new family. The long-awaited station wagon under the traditional name, which was absent in production program year, was presented in May 1995, when the premiere of the 323i model with a six-cylinder 170-horsepower engine took place, briskly taking a start and giving out a hundred in just 8 seconds, as well as an even more frisky "328i" (193 hp). In June 2000, the range of sedans and station wagons was supplemented with all-wheel drive configurations 330Xi and 330Xdi with a new power unit. New items received a modified front suspension and four-wheel drive through a transfer case with a Morse chain and a center differential. In general, the transmission is similar to that used on the X5 off-road vehicles. Instead of mechanical limited slip differentials, the ADB-X "automatic differentiation" system is used, which redistributes the traction forces on the wheels, depending on their adhesion to the road surface, using the service braking system. In addition, the cars are equipped with the latest in-line 6-cylinder engine with a working volume of 3.0 liters, created on the basis of a 2.8-liter unit. The piston stroke was increased from 84 to 89.6 mm. Power increased by almost 20% - from 193 to 231 hp, which allowed the heavier cars to have better dynamic performance than the regular 328i and 328i Touring models. The other two models (330Xdi and 330 Xdi Touring) are powered by the renowned 2.9-liter turbocharged diesel with 184 hp.

At the end of 2000, the whole family of "triplets" acquired new variants - 320i and 325i. For the first, the displacement of the engine increased from 2.0 to 2.2 liters, and the power - from 150 to 170 hp. The displacement of the 2.5-liter unit of the 323i remained the same, but as a result of the modernization, the power increased from 170 to 192 hp, and the car index was changed to 325i.

The coupe family is now headed by the acknowledged leader among the cars of this class M3. The external differences of the car are in a different front bumper-spoiler with an enlarged air intake, stylish ventilation grilles on the sidewalls of the front fenders and special chrome-plated alloy wheels. The world premiere of the cabriolet on the troika chassis took place in March 2000 at the Geneva Motor Show. The external resemblance of a convertible to a coupe is obvious, although the cars have different doors and rear fenders. The convertible has roll-over roll-over arches and a folding soft top, which fits into a special volumetric container and can be dismantled. The new generation of the BMW 3-Series entered the market in spring 2005. It replaced the world-famous and seemingly ever-popular E46 platform. The base engine for the 320i is a 2.2-liter gasoline six-cylinder engine with variable valve timing Valvetronic with 150 hp. It is curious that the sedan and the station wagon were designed simultaneously for the first time in the history of the brand. Technically, with the exception of the body, the models are identical. When developing the station wagon, special attention was paid to the design of the luggage compartment. When the rear seat backrest is upright, the boot capacity is 460 liters. The 2010 BMW 3 Series Coupé is equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, the BMW 335dA with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The convertible visually differs from the coupe only in the convertible top. Otherwise, similar changes. But the Coupe-Cabriolet version is 210 kg heavier than a two-door with a fixed roof. The BMW 320d is equipped with a two-liter four-cylinder diesel power unit, which is equipped with a common-rail direct fuel injection system and a turbocharger with variable intake geometry. This engine develops a maximum power of 184 hp. and a maximum torque of 380 Nm at 1750 rpm. Acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h in 7.5 seconds. Average fuel consumption is only 4.5 liters per 100 km.

The engines are paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission gear. The vehicle is equipped with an Auto Start Stop function as standard. All models of the line are equipped with a system for switching driving modes, which include the Comfort, Sport, Sport + modes, as well as the economical ECO PRO. It supports a driving style with optimal fuel consumption and thus increases the range per tank.

The equipment level of the BMW F30 is very high. The comprehensive ConnectedDrive system combines service and entertainment functions: windshield, night vision and blind spot camera, adaptive cruise control, road sign reading and much more. The first BMW of the third series was introduced in 1975. This model was offered with a two-door sedan and a convertible body made by Baur. The car was equipped with engines ranging from 1.6 to 2.3 liters (75-143 hp), and the most powerful versions of the BMW 320 and BMW 323 could be easily recognized by the twin headlights. In total, up to 1983 more than 1.3 million "three rubles" were made.

2nd generation (E30), 1982–1994

The second "treshka" has been produced since 1982. The choice of bodies has become much larger: coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon. The line of engines was opened by a 1.6-liter engine. The top version of the BMW 325i was equipped with a 2.5 liter 170 hp engine. from. Since 1985, they began to install on this model diesel engine 2.4 l (naturally aspirated, and later turbocharged), in 1986 the all-wheel drive version of the 325ix appeared. And 1986 was marked by the appearance of a charged version. Production of the third series sedans ceased in 1990, convertibles in 1993, and station wagons in 1994. A total of 2.3 million cars were produced.

3rd generation (E36), 1990-2000


The next generation of the model appeared in 1990. First, cars with sedan and coupe bodies appeared in car dealerships, in 1994 the model range was replenished with a convertible, and in 1995 a station wagon and three-door hatchback Compact. Four-cylinder gasoline engines had a volume of 1.6 or 1.8 liters and a power of 100 to 140 liters. from. The choice of traditional in-line "sixes" was a little wider: 2.0 (150 hp), 2.5 (170 or 192 hp) and 2.8 (193 hp). Also, turbodiesels with a volume of 1 were installed under the hood of the "treshki" 7 liters (90 HP) and 2.5 liters, which developed 115 or 143 forces, but coupes and convertibles had only gasoline engines. All BMWs of the third series with the E36 index were rear-wheel drive, there were no four-wheel drive modifications. The "charged" versions had a name.

The cars were produced at factories in Germany (Munich), Mexico and the USA. Just over three million cars were made by 2000.

4th generation (E46), 1998-2007


BMW sedans of the third series with the E46 index have been produced since 1998, a year later a coupe and a station wagon appeared, and in 2000 - a convertible and a three-door hatchback. In 2001 it was introduced. When creating the model, the efforts of the engineers were aimed not at increasing power, but primarily at increasing body rigidity and improving handling.

The wide range of power units consisted of four-cylinder engines with a volume of 1.8 liters (115 hp), 1.9 liters (105 or 118 hp) and 2.0 liters (118 or 143 hp), as well as in-line six-cylinder engines 2.0 (150 HP), 2.2 (170 HP), 2.5 (170-192 HP), 2.8 (193 HP) and 3.0 (231-238 HP). The two-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel developed 116-150 hp. with., and six-cylinder 2.9 and 3.0 - 184 and 204 liters. from. respectively. This time, the "treshka" BMW could be not only rear-wheel drive, but also all-wheel drive, these were modifications of the BMW 325xi and BMW 330xi. In 2002, the model was restyled.

Car production was carried out at factories in Germany, South Africa, Mexico, China, and since 2001 - at the Kaliningrad Avtotor. The release of Compact hatchbacks was completed in 2004 with the appearance, other versions lasted on the conveyor until 2006. In total, 3.1 million cars were made during this time.

5th generation (E90), 2005–2012


The fifth generation "treshki" debuted in 2005 with a sedan body, which received the E90 index. The car has become slightly larger than the predecessor model, thanks to which the rear passengers have more space. The car received a rear multi-link suspension, and active steering was offered as an option.

In the same 2005, a station wagon (E91) appeared, in 2006 the model range was replenished (E92), and in 2007 - (E93). The assembly of cars for Russia was organized at the Kaliningrad Avtotor.

The base model BMW 316i was equipped with a 1.6-liter engine producing 122 hp. from. The two-liter four-cylinder engine developed 129-177 forces, depending on the modification. Inline "six" had a volume of 2.5 liters (177-218 liters. From.) And three liters (218-272 liters. From.) Also on the machines put a six-cylinder engine 3.0 with double turbocharging capacity of 306 or 326 forces. Turbo diesel engines 2.0 and 3.0 developed from 116 to 286 liters. from. In 2009, BMW's sedans and station wagons of the third series underwent a slight restyling, and at the end of 2011 they were replaced by a new generation model. Two-door versions are still in production.

"Okay BMW, what's new in the third series?"

In theory, the Bavarian "treshka" should tell us about itself. The G20 sedan just shown at the Paris Motor Show is the first BMW to be equipped with an interactive voice assistant based on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. The assistant is activated by the phrase "Okay BMW" or "Hey BMW" and is trained to respond both to standard voice commands (such as phone and navigation controls) and to more complex questions, which may include: "How does the high beam system work? ? " or "What alerts do I have?" Interestingly, the system does not have a proper name; instead, the owner himself can name it according to his liking.

The set of functions and skills will expand during software updates, but it is not yet clear if "Hey BMW" will be able to keep the conversation going with jokes and sarcastic remarks like Siri or Alice can. Moreover, it is already known for sure that in Russia the possibilities of "talkers" will be limited. Let's hope that this is only for the first time, and then the system will learn to speak Russian normally.

And if the BMW voice assistant could now communicate on an equal basis with a person, it would probably tell the visitors of the Paris Motor Show the non-trivial story of the transformation of an F30 three-ruble note into a G20 series car. However, “transformation” is not the most appropriate word, because there are almost no general details left.

BMW traditionally does not light up the appearance of new "three rubles" on concepts, so the design, to some extent, was a surprise. But at the same time, the third series sedan is the most conservative BMW, and such experiments as over the "five" and "seven" are not put over it.

The silhouette and proportions remained almost intact, although the car has grown significantly, especially in length (by 85 mm - up to 4709 mm) and in width (by 16 mm). The height remained almost unchanged, but the track increased both at the front (by 43 mm) and at the rear (by 21 mm), and the wheelbase was extended by 41 mm. In the biography of the "treshki" there were also more serious jumps, but 2851 mm between the axles is more than that of the "five" E39.

And the new sedan also has excellent aerodynamic design: the drag coefficient of the BMW 320d version is only 0.23. Not a record, but close: among mass-produced cars, only the new sedan has less (0.22). At the same time, the stylists could not resist the temptation to make four different front bumper options for the third series, depending on the equipment packages. The white car in the photos is with the Sport package and the blue one with the M Sport package.

Those who have seen the "three-ruble" salon will not be able to surprise: here are exactly the same virtual instrument panel, center console and a new selector "automatic". The starter button moved to the tunnel, the climate control and outdoor lighting control units became push-button, and the parking brake became electromechanical. The difference with the "X-fifth" is perhaps in the diagonal of the central touchscreen: 10.25 inches instead of 12.3, although the BMW OS 7.0 operating system and the graphics of virtual instruments are identical. However, apparently, there will be a "tidy" with traditional arrows. This is evidenced by the photos of the future online configurator, which the day before leaked to the Network, but are absent in the official press materials of BMW. They have a panel with four dials, very similar to the instruments of the fifth series cars.

In Russia, BMW promises an M-package as standard for all versions - with LED fog lights and a leather M-steering wheel. For a surcharge, they will offer the Luxury Line package, as well as three-zone climate control, a glass roof (the "window" is now 100 mm longer) and noise-absorbing side windows (for the windshield, this is already "in the base"). Riders are promised increased space - especially in the shoulders, and the volume of the trunk has not changed (480 liters).

The CLAR platform, although the third series sedan is related to the "five" and "seven", but the front suspension is not double wishbone, but with McPherson struts, which in passing means the absence of air suspension: BMW did not rush in pursuit of a Mercedes C-class.

Instead, the focus was on sharpening handling: the center of gravity was lowered by about 10 mm, the curb weight was reduced by 55 kg due to the expanded use of aluminum in the body structure, the geometry of the rear multi-link was changed. The base suspension uses progressive shock absorbers and hydraulic buffers, which work on the front axle during rebound and on the rear axle during compression. An option will be a sports M-suspension with an understatement of 10 mm, and those European journalists who traveled in the summer on the pre-production versions of the "treshki" note that the springs in this M-set became twice as stiff as before, but almost did not worsen the ride energy intensity. Thanks in part to the new generation of run-flat tires. An alternative to the M Sport suspension is the optional M Adaptive chassis with electronically controlled shock absorbers.

Rear steered wheels "treshka" are not allowed, but the system for changing the gear ratio of the steering gear has been reconfigured - however, there will be versions with a conventional steering mechanism. And among the electronic driver assistants there is active cruise control and a reversing assistant, which remembers the last 50 meters of the distance traveled and is ready to independently drive along the same trajectory in the opposite direction.

The G20 series starts with five engine options. BMW 320i and 330i have two-liter "fours" with 184 and 258 hp. accordingly, a 150-horsepower two-liter diesel engine is provided for the BMW 318d, and the same engine develops 190 hp on the BMW 320d. Moreover, it is the version of the BMW 320d that will initially be the only one for which all-wheel drive can be ordered. And so far only the BMW 330d with a three-liter engine with 265 hp has been equipped with a six-cylinder engine.

However, for Russia, this range has been reduced to three modifications: BMW 330i, BMW 320d and BMW 320d xDrive. But they are all equipped as standard with the M-package with M Sport suspension and braking system M Sport.

The most important innovation in the drivetrain is the electronically controlled locking rear differential, which can be ordered on the BMW 330i. The eight-speed "automatic" ZF and all-wheel drive xDrive have not changed structurally. Other powertrains? Later, a three-cylinder version of the BMW 318i (140 hp) and a "charged" BMW M340i with a 3.0 turbo six with a capacity of 370 hp should appear. Also expected are hybrids and a pure electric version with its own i4 designation (in 2021). Even the extreme BMW M3 sedan is rumored to have an auxiliary electric motor!

Production of the G20 series sedans will begin at once at three plants: in Munich, at the BMW-Brilliance joint venture in Shenyang and at a new plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Sales in Europe will begin on March 9, 2019. According to BMW tradition, the delay in Russia should be small.

In early October 2018, on the catwalks of the International Paris Motor Show, the German manufacturer unveiled the all-new BMW 3 Series. The novelty is absolutely new, already the seventh generation. It received the G20 index, a new modular platform, a modified line of power units, a set of rather interesting and unusual options, a redesigned interior, and a new appearance. The manufacturer has not previously shown the concept version. The third family is one of the most conservative. It practically did not change its proportions, however, it received a completely different design. First of all, the new optics of head lighting is striking. It has become a little larger and also more prominent. The graphics of the LED daytime running lights have also changed. Instead of the classic "angel eyes", the car received several broken lines. The branded radiator grille nostrils have increased. From now on, they have received a design with a 3D effect and go a little on the hood. The front bumper houses a massive air intake and new, more compact fog lamp sections. The stern has received an upturned tailgate edge, new brake lights, a raised bumper and a pair of exhaust pipes.

Dimensions

BMW 3 Series is a premium five-seater mid-size sedan, the station wagon is not officially sold in our market, and the two-door versions have been singled out in a separate fourth series. After a change of generations, it has grown significantly in size. From now on, the car measures 4709 mm long, 1827 mm wide, 1442 mm high and 2851 mm between the wheelsets. The default ground clearance is small. Only 136 millimeters remains between the bottom point of the underbody and the road surface. After a generational change, the car is based on the CLAR modular platform, which is also used in the fifth and seventh series. It is worth noting that the treshka received a slightly different suspension layout. Instead of a system on wishbonesshe got McPherson stands. There is also a multi-link system at the back. Because of this decision, the car will not get the air suspension. As before, there are three options to choose from: a standard one with passive shock absorbers, a sporty one with a 10 mm lower ground clearance and stiffer springs, as well as M-adaptive struts with struts that can change their stiffness.

Specifications

In the domestic market, so far, several versions with engines are offered internal combustion and exclusively eight-speed automatic hydromechanical ZF transmissions. Diesel versions of the BMW 3 Series will be equipped with two turbodiesel two-liter fours, developing 150 and 190 forces, and an all-wheel drive system will be offered for the older engine. For an additional fee, you can order a three-liter six for 265 horses exclusively with all-wheel drive. Gasoline versions are also composed of two fours for 184 and 258 horses, with the only proviso that all-wheel drive can be ordered for the base engine. Top version The M340 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged three-liter inline-six producing 374 horsepower.

Equipment

The seventh generation BMW 3 Series became the first car of the German manufacturer to receive a full-fledged voice assistant, as in modern smartphones. It works on the basis of Microsoft Azure and does not have its own name, the owner is free to choose it himself, at his discretion. The system is capable of controlling the functions of the multimedia center, navigation and telephone, as well as answering questions and conducting a dialogue. For the first time, the capabilities of the assistant for the domestic market will be limited, however, in the future they will be expanded through updates.

All series are united by a common concept that distinguishes and has always distinguished these cars in the company's model range. The dimensions of the BMW 3 and primarily the dimensions of the interior vary depending on the body type. Station wagon e91 ideal for a large family, long journeys and transportation of bulky items. The trunk volume of the model is the same (460 liters), but access to it is easier, and the tailgate glass opens separately.
