2.0 EcoBoost (200 and 240 HP). Appeared after restyling. Turbocharged direct injection, sophisticated and powerful. Therefore, one cannot count on special reliability. Technically, the two-liter engine remains the same. Changed only the cylinder head, added a turbine and high pressure fuel pump (high pressure fuel pump) for direct injection. Accordingly, additional elements require additional attention.

On the first batches of the sold Mondeo 4 with EcoBust, pistons burned out repeatedly. The problem was fixed with a new firmware. If your machine has not been updated with the firmware, then you are at risk. The intake manifold may also burn out, fragments of which will “kill” the turbine. Therefore, if cracks appear on the collector, then you should not "play" with welding, it is better to change it completely.

2.5 Turbo (220 HP). If almost all the previous engines were inherited by Ford from Mazda, then this engine was developed by Volvo. They were installed on FM4 only before restyling. The five-cylinder engine runs well and eats fuel well.

Possible problems are oil seal leaks and timing belt delamination. The last one is bad, it is better to change it 10-15 thousand km ahead of schedule. Oil seals can leak due to natural wear or rupture of the diaphragm in the oil separator.

Diesel motors

1.8 Duratorq (DLD-418, 100 and 125 HP). Officially, Mondeo 4 was not delivered to our area with such motors. The engine is quite reliable, only sensitive to fuel quality. It was installed on.

2.0 Duratorq TDCi (DW10, 130 and 140 HP). The most common diesel among Mondeo 4. The engine was borrowed from the French, developed by PSA (Peugeot / Citroen). The 1.6-liter engine often has variable phase clutch control (VCT) control valves. Engine oil flows out through them rather quickly, and the control lamp comes on late - when less than a liter remains. If the driver did not notice this in time, the unit is kaput. And the valve cover gasket also leaks, but this is not so scary for the engine.

Atmospheric gasoline engines of 2.0 and 2.3 liters ("Duratek-HE") are the most common. They sometimes have high oil consumption and are less reliable than the 1.6-liter, but generally live longer due to quieter use. Repair is not provided by the manufacturer, but you can find non-original or Mazda spare parts (the latter have a greater resource). The timing chain survives up to 250,000 km. Often cheating servicemen assure her of her imminent death - do you hear, they say, a rumble? And it is actually produced by the swirl flaps in the intake manifold. This usually happens at a run of 70,000 km. The reason is the increased play of the damper shaft from the side attachments... Previously, they sold a special repair kit, now they are increasingly changing the collector assembly. Competent service men treat the ailment by installing machined support washers. By the way, these motors also often have a valve cover gasket leaking.

A rather rare five-cylinder 2.5-liter turbo engine came from Volvo. He was also put on the previous "Focuses ST" and "Coogie". As long as the motor was 100% Swedish, there were no worries with it. But as soon as "Ford" put a hand on it, sores appeared: the timing belt exfoliates, the oil seals leak both due to their wear and due to the breakdown of the oil separator of the crankcase ventilation system.

The supercharged "eco-boosters" (2.0 liters, 200 and 240 hp), which replaced the 2.5-liter Volvo engine on restyled cars, first burned out the piston engine due to detonation and poor-quality fuel. Some owners managed to change the motor under warranty as much as two times - these "eco-busts" also have no maintainability. After the appearance of the updated firmware of the engine control unit, the disease receded. Not without leaks. The most common culprit is the crankshaft rear oil seal.

For gasoline engines, the manufacturer recommends 5W ‑ 20 oil and, alternatively, 5W ‑ 30. When using the first (it is of lower viscosity) after 40,000 km, sometimes knocking in the head of the block is heard on a cold engine, therefore servicemen recommend filling only 5W ‑ 30. (By the way, only such oil is recommended for diesel engines.) The long-suffering 1.6-liter engine is most susceptible to this problem. At intervals of 40,000 km, the throttle body must be cleaned on all gasoline engines. Note: The Check Engine light may not come on even if this unit is very dirty. It is advisable to flush the injectors: on atmospheric engines every 80,000 km, and on supercharged engines - after 150,000 km.

The maintainability of Mondeo diesel engines, developed by the French concern Peugeot Citroen, is high; any original spare parts are available. If, for example, details fuel equipment under the Ford brand are only assembled, the French counterparts can be ordered separately. By 140,000-170,000 km, high-pressure fuel pumps fail and fuel injectors... Wear products fuel pump clog them so that it is useless to clean. Unfortunately, there is no prevention. The first bell is a malfunction of the injection pump main pressure control solenoid. Symptom - difficulty starting the motor. Replacing only the solenoid will not save you from imminent death of the pump. Fuel filter enough for 20,000-30,000 km. When replacing, it is important to manually pump the system - prolonged dry operation will finish off the injection pump. The pumps of supercharged petrol engines are just as sensitive.

Regeneration of the particulate filter usually occurs during extended driving at high speeds. If the car does not leave the borders of the metropolis, the corresponding operation can be done in the service, in manual mode. Due to a clogged diesel particulate filter, not only does the dynamics of the car fall, but the expensive EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation valve) dies faster, which is already not reliable. It sticks in the open position and the car starts to smoke.

On all engines, except for the 2.5-liter supercharged engine, after 80,000 km of run, the upper right support dies. This can even be determined visually - the motor sags and rests on a metal bracket. The resource of the lower support (about 160,000 km) depends on timely replacement worn right, but the upper left is almost eternal.

Turbine longevity depends on the consciousness of the owners. If you let the node cool down for idle after the trip, it will be enough for 250,000 km. Traces of oil in the intake system are absolutely normal: any turbine spits out at least a little lubricant. In cars with diesel engines and "eco-boosts" that have been involved in an accident, the supercharger shaft is destroyed some time after a frontal impact. Having survived the deformation, with high revs rotation it breaks.

Every three years (or every 60,000 km) it is necessary to remove and flush the radiators of the engine and air conditioning. Saving on the car wash threatens the death of motors due to overheating. Many owners catch on too late. First of all, all the rubber parts die and the piston rings are buried - coked deposits are to blame. You can try to save the rings, but this must be done promptly. The injector flush fluid or other similar solution is poured into the cylinders through the holes for the candles.

Often, due to the high temperature of the engine radiator, the fan control unit located on its housing suffers. Because of this, the electric motor may not work in all speed ranges or even refuse. Unfortunately, they sell the assembly only as an assembly. It will be very lucky if there is a separate unit from the fan during disassembly.

TRANSMISSION RATINGS

Later they went thicker, with a resource of up to 150,000 km. In both cases, the weak point is the release bearing. Due to a lack of lubrication (this is often the case even with original parts), it quickly begins to make noise and gets awkward. As a result, the clutch pedal becomes stiff, it is difficult to change gears, and the disc wears out faster.

Reliable 5-speed "mechanics" MT75 is available only for gasoline 2-liter "aspirated". On the basis of this unit, a six-speed version was made for a 2.5-liter supercharged engine and diesel engines. To extend the life of all manual transmissions, simply change the oil after 100,000 km or at the same time as changing the clutch. The right-hand drive oil seal often leaks, and this is the trouble of all Ford boxes.

The six-speed "automatic" "Aisin-AW21" is paired with diesel engines and a petrol 2.3-liter engine.
