The new BMW sedan of the third series - self-locking and speechless. New BMW sedan of the third series - self-locking and speechless BMW 3 series model range

03.04.2017

Bmw 3series) Is a compact car manufactured by the German automaker BMW AG. "Treshka" has always been one of the most popular cars among young motorists. Addictions to this car are quite understandable, since it is pleasant in all respects: current appearance, good equipment, powerful power units, a high level of comfort and excellent handling. Adds the popularity of this model and the acceptable price of the car for secondary market... And, here's how things are with the reliability of a used BMW 3 Series, and what you should pay attention to when choosing a three-ruble note with mileage, I will tell you in this article.

Some interesting facts:

The presentation of the first BMW 3 series, which had the E-21 index, took place in June 1975, and marked the beginning of the history of "three rubles". In 1980, a sports version of the car was introduced, which was named "BMW M3". At its core, this is a BMW 3 Series in a “coupe” body, but modified by the factory department tuning BMW and is completed only with the most powerful engine... To date, six generations of this car have already changed, but today we will talk about the fifth generation of the model, the world premiere, which took place at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. Depending on the body type, the car is assigned the appropriate index: sedan - E90, station wagon - E91, coupe - E92, convertible - E93. When developing the design of the fifth generation of the three-ruble note, the manufacturer did not dare to radically change the style, but limited itself to evolutionary changes, bringing the appearance of the three-ruble note in line with the design of older models.

Half a year after the debut of the sedan, the BMW 3 Series in the station wagon appeared on the market, and in September 2006 the mass production of the car in the coupe began. Since 2007, all 3 Series BMWs have been using the Dynamix system, which has demonstrated how driving pleasure can be in harmony with exemplary low fuel consumption and toxic emissions. The BMW 3 Series is the company's best-selling model - in 2008, the 3 Series accounted for about 40% of sales. Models of this series are periodically included in the list of the best-selling cars in Europe. In total, during the period of production of the car of this model, 2,147,247 copies were produced.

Weaknesses and disadvantages of the used BMW 3 Series

The body of this model corresponds to the brand image and is not subject to corrosion. The metal of the body parts firmly withstands our reagents, and, even in the places of chips, after several years of operation, in most cases, there is not even a hint of rust. But the bodywork equipment cannot boast of exemplary reliability. So, for example, after 2 years of operation, the front optics begin to grow cloudy. Over time, door handles begin to wedge, this ailment is unpleasant in that when it appears, you have to change not only the handle, but also the door lock. Another nuisance that is characteristic of aged cars is the seal between the rear window and the trunk lid falls out. In most cases, the owners fix the problem on their own by placing the gum on the glue. For the winter, you need to fill in a high-quality anti-freeze for glass, otherwise, in severe frost, when you try to wash the headlights, the washers will fail.

Engines

Traditionally for BMW, "treshka" has a large number of available power units, but in our secondary market there are most often cars with the following power units: gasoline - 2.0 (136, 150, 168 HP), 2.5 (215 HP), 3.0 (254, 268 HP) , 3.5 (302 hp). Also, diesel engines are quite common - 2.0 (120, 141, 167, 177 hp), 3.0 (194, 201, 228, 242 hp). BMW powertrains have always been associated with power and reliability, but not everything is so unambiguous with three-ruble motors. One of the most problem areas engines are considered increased consumption oil - up to 2 liters per 10,000 km of run, and the more mileage the car has, the more often you will have to add oil (up to a liter per 1000 km). When servicing the engines, it is necessary to fill in the recommended oil, otherwise, the valve stem seals will wear out prematurely.

In a power unit with a volume of 2.0, the valve cover is made of plastic, because of this, over time, oil begins to seep out from under it. Also, this motor does not like overheating, and, if you do not keep track of the engine temperature, then, in most cases, the valve cover loses its geometry. Once every 60-80 thousand km, the eccentric shaft sensor has to be changed. It should be noted that if it fails, the car will not start. Replacement is required every 100,000 km throttle (Valvetronic) - the electric motor is carbonized with oil. Rest gasoline engines more reliable, but still, it is difficult to call them problem-free. One of the most common ailments of gasoline engines is considered a small catalyst resource, which, even if refueled with high-quality fuel, is unlikely to last more than 70,000 km.

Quite often, the reason for visiting the service center is fuel injectors, which in our reality, on average, take care of only 80-100 thousand km. The first signal about the presence of problems with the injectors will be: poor acceleration dynamics, as well as blue smoke from exhaust system... The timing chain on average serves 150,000 km, if you do not notice in time that the chain has begun to stretch, everything can end very sadly (the chain jumps and the piston bends the valve). Over time, vibrations loosen the chain tensioner mounting bolt, as a result of which oil leaks appear from under its seals. By a run of 100 thousand km, the solenoid for controlling the clutches of variable valve timing is clogged with oil deposits. This immediately affects the dynamics, and it happens that the motor goes into emergency mode work.

Diesel motors

The situation is no better with diesel engines. The most problematic is the 2.0 engine (177 hp), which, even with low mileage, can break the chain from the camshaft drive. If this trouble happens to the engine, you need to be ready to pay 800-900 USD. for restoration work (cost including original spare parts). The problem was resolved after 2008. Also, the disadvantages of this power unit include piezoelectric fuel injectors (average resource 50-70 thousand km), which cannot be restored.

Two-liter engine with 163 hp. equipped with a turbine from the Mitsubishi company, as a rule, its resource does not exceed 100-120 thousand km (the axis is destroyed). Also, there may be problems with the turbine control unit (changes in assembly with the turbine). The rest of the engines are more reliable, but they suffer from oil leakage from under the exhaust manifold, which leads to damage to the intake flaps, and subsequently to the engine. When using low-quality fuel, the elements of the fuel system (injectors, high-pressure fuel pumps), as well as the EGR valve and the particulate filter fail prematurely (at a mileage of 50-80 thousand km).

Transmission

BMW 3 Series can be equipped with such gearboxes - six-speed mechanics and automatic transmission. If we talk about the reliability of the transmission, then with careful operation and timely maintenance, both boxes practically do not cause any problems. IN rare cases possible trouble with the automatic transmission due to a malfunction in the control unit (the clutch hangs up). In fairness, it should be noted that the problem is not serious and can be solved by diagnosing and removing the error. In mechanics, the weak point is the grip. At medium loads, its resource is about 100,000 km, but if you use the car as a sports car, replacing the clutch may be required even after 30,000 km. Most BMW 3 Series are rear-wheel drive, but there are also four-wheel drive versions in the aftermarket. The most common problem with such cars is a small resource transfer case, which fails every 80-100 thousand kilometers. In most cases, for further use of the all-wheel drive, the transfer case has to be changed to a new one.

The reliability of the suspension elements of the BMW 3 Series

The chassis' of this car combines acceptable comfort and a high level of handling. Most of the front suspension parts are made of aluminum, this solution significantly reduces the weight of the car, but negatively affects the cost of repairing the chassis. If we talk about its reliability, then in this component the "treshki" suspension will not disappoint. Many owners complain that after 50,000 km of run, when driving on a bad road surface, extraneous noise (creaking, knocking) appears from the suspension. This feature is not a breakdown and is eliminated by lubricating the silent blocks. Otherwise, if you do not take into account the struts and stabilizer bushings (they change every 30-40 thousand km), in the front axle, with careful operation, you will not have to do anything up to 100-150 thousand km.

Back suspension bmw The 3 series is also reliable. The only exception can be floating silent blocks, which very often fail at a mileage of 80,000 km. Rear tires are prone to increased tread wear from inside... This is due to the fact that the wheels are installed by the house to increase stability. In the steering, most often troubles are caused by the power steering pump (you have to change it every 50-70 thousand km) and steering rack (starts knocking on a run of 60-80 thousand km, replacement will cost $ 500).

Salon

Traditionally, for most BMW models, there are no complaints about the "treshki" interior, and this applies both to the quality of finishing materials and assembly. As for the reliability of the electrical equipment of the cabin, here you should pay attention to the operability of the stove fan (it starts to whistle over time). The problem is solved quite simply (lubrication of the motor parts is necessary), but to get to the fan you will have to disassemble the floor of the cabin. Also, there are complaints about the radio (it stops catching radio stations). Causes questions and the operability of the central lock (stops responding to the remote control). To fix the problem, you will have to pay about $ 200. (requires replacement of the antenna in the trunk lid or wiring, the problem is relevant for station wagons). If, on the instrument panel, the indicator with a yellow steering wheel lights up, you need to urgently contact the service. If this is not done, at the most inopportune moment the steering wheel can jam. In most cases, the ailment is treated by flashing the control unit, but there are often cases when the owners had to fork out to replace the electronic board.

Outcome:

In a used state, it has a number of rather serious drawbacks with power units, to eliminate which, in most cases, you will have to pay a tidy bag. However, if you are looking for a stylish, fast and enjoyable vehicle, then more suitable option you will not find in this price segment.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your feedback that will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

BMW 3 Series bodywork, body and model evolution throughout the success story, best cars and reference models.

Over the years, the BMW 3 Series has become the epitome of a sports sedan. This role accompanies his triumphant march of the leader in the premium car segment. The debut moment came in 1975, when the first of the BMW 3 Series bodies rolled off the assembly line. Over the years, more than twelve million people have enjoyed this legendary sedan. The special point was that the categories of buyers were very different, and this was the reason for this unique success.

The body concept has always been distinguished by its uniqueness. A compact body with an elegant design combined with a powerful engine and sporty undercarriage endowed the car with special agility and dynamics. The combination of technical features with modern desires potential buyers... The innovative concepts and technical solutions of the body satisfied many, because nothing of the kind was available from other manufacturers.

In addition to the sedan, over time, the plant's designers created other models of BMW 3 series bodies:

  • Cabriolet.
  • Station wagon.
  • Coupe.
  • Hatchback.
  • The sports version of the M3 sedan (later it became a coupe).

The first model of the "troika" E21

The first, among the 3 series models, was the body with the E21 marking, which was made in the form of a two-door coupe.

July 1975 was a significant year for him, because it was then that he was introduced to the general public as a replacement for the legendary 2002 coupe. The new compact sedan immediately set special accents. The dimensions of the body (length 4355 mm, width 1610 mm, height 1380 mm) in combination with the dominant front "nostrils" make the car both compact and "adult" at the same time.

  • E21 MacPherson strut front suspension with rear-tilted struts for better steering responsiveness.
  • The front stabilizer has become an additional support for the steering rods.
  • Independent rear suspension on shock absorbers and oblique (diagonal) levers.
  • Front ventilated disc and rear drum (for powerful models - disc) brakes.

The first models with the E21 body were 315, 316, 318, 320, as well as 320i, on which an injector was used instead of a carburetor. The well-known M10 engine with a volume of 1500 to 2000 cm3 was used as a power unit.

This line of models existed until 1977, in September of which a new development was presented - the six-cylinder M60 engine. The presence of such an engine forced the developers to release another model - the 323i. In addition, the 323i and 320 models received rear brakes disc type as standard. The M60 engine was later slightly redesigned and received another version of the M20, which was supposed to fill the space that arose between the large six-cylinder M60 and the small four-cylinder M10.

The end of 1979 brought changes to the E21 body. The changes affected engine compartmentwhich was required by the need to install an engine-driven fan in the six-cylinder models. However, for the four-cylinder models, special fasteners had to be made for the radiator so as not to change its location.

Ease of handling, excellent dynamic performance and sporty looks were the motivating factors that made customers buy this car. Until 1981, in just six years of production, more than a million cars of this series were produced. This body was produced until 1983 and was discontinued after the release of a new version of the E30 body.

The second model of the "troika" E30

1982 was marked by the release of the second version of the body, which received the E30 index and was made in the form of a coupe. And just a year later, the same body came out in the layout of a four-door sedan. The body has received a redesigned design with improved aerodynamic performance. The main focus was on improved comfort and sporty styling. This is exactly what many clients liked. True, the tightness of the cabin caused a little dissatisfaction. It is better to sit behind only two passengers, and, what is remarkable, access to the rear seat in the four-door version of the body is worse due to the narrow and uncomfortable door opening. There were also some complaints about the trunk: loading the cargo was complicated due to the high edge of the trunk.

BMW has consistently and rationally improved the E30 body every year. And in 1985, it presented to the general public a new model range: the 325ix with four-wheel drive and the 325i convertible. These models were designed for those customers who love active driving, which, in turn, is reflected in the demand for them. The demand was limited, but constant. In the same year BMW went to a non-standard step for themselves - the use of a six-cylinder engine on the model 324d, which was released into production.

1986 was pleased with the release of the M3 sports model with a 200-horsepower injection engine. The exterior of the M3 was distinguished by widened fenders, under low-profile R15 tires, and increased sills and bumpers. This model was able to accelerate to 100 km / h in just 6.8 seconds, which later became the benchmark and dividing barrier between sports cars and conventional cars.

In 1988, all models of the series were restyled. Has changed somewhat appearance body: new headlights were installed, the shape of the trunk was modernized and the rear lights were changed. M3 from that time began to be produced in the form of a convertible.

The release of the station wagon began in 1989 and lasted until 1994. However, it did not differ in something remarkable: the use of engines is the same as on the sedan, a rather low payload of 500 kg and a relatively weak suspension.

The release of the line with the E30 body ended in 1991, after the release of a new version of the E36.

Success of the second generations bmw The 3 series was so large that more than 2.3 million customers became the owners of these particular models. This result exceeded sales of the first generation cars by almost a million units.

The third model of the "troika" E36

The end of 1990 was the year of the appearance of the next version of the "troika" with the E36 body. The four-door sedan was presented first. New model not only inherited all the virtues from her predecessor, but also increased them. BMW's signature style in the form of a striking characteristic appearance, emphasizing dynamics and power, is still striking. The size and capacity of the body have grown significantly. The body assembly is striking in its impeccability. The wide range of in-line petrol engines and exceptional handling have been praised by many buyers for these bodies.

October 1991 pleased the diesel lover with the release of a new economical, but rather high-spirited 325td, which was already equipped with a turbine.

In 1992, the two-door version of the 320i and 325i rolled off the assembly line, but in the form of an elegant coupe. And just a few months later, customers were able to purchase new versions of the sporty BMW M3 and the convertible, which received an aluminum roof as an option.

The winter of 94/95 diversified the BMW 3 Series lineup with the appearance of the Compact hatchback. They were endowed with power units with a volume of 1.6 liters to 1.9 liters, there was a variant of a turbodiesel with a volume of 1.7 liters. To reduce the price of it, they decided not to install a rear multi-link independent suspension, but were limited to a simpler dependent with a continuous beam of the bridge. The car came out as a youth-student version, but at the same time quite practical.

And finally, in May 1995, a new 323i station wagon was released with a 170-horsepower six as a power unit. And although the capacity of the new station wagon is not so great, the main role was played by the image and power, which consumers so longed for.

The fourth model of the "troika" E46

After 8 years in 1998 bMW concern launches the production of the new E46 body, which gives a start to a new fourth generation cars 3 series. Increases in power, comfort and safety are becoming a rule of thumb when upgrading a version, which is typical for this generation. The length and width of the body have increased, which, naturally, has increased the interior. For two years, new coupes, convertibles and Touring wagons appeared in the family of "triplets". The end of 2000 will be remembered for the appearance of the updated Compact II 3-door hatchback.

There were almost no special changes in the bodies of sedans and station wagons of this series. The main focus was on engine upgrades, with 2.2 and 3 liter petrol engines. Three basic sedan trim levels were also offered:

  • Execution M sport, which has sports seats and a steering wheel, a stiffer suspension and wheels with a radius of R17.
  • Comfort.
  • Top Comfort.

The last two options are designed for a softer ride and have differences in trim and interior equipment.

Further innovations in the models consisted of changes in the parameters of the power units and the chassis.

From that time on, the M3 became the leader in the coupe family. Distinctive features M3 become front bumper-Special spoiler, which includes an enlarged air intake, stylish ventilation grilles on the front fenders and specially designed chrome wheels. The power of this handsome man was already 343 hp.

The version of the convertible, presented in March 2000 at the Geneva Motor Show, was liked by many connoisseurs, even despite the frank external resemblance of the convertible to the coupe. However, the cars have different door designs and rear fenders. Safety arches that are triggered automatically when overturning, and a soft top, which, if unnecessary, fits into a special container or can be dismantled altogether, added a twist to this version. In addition, for the cold season, a hard top was assumed, with the help of which the convertible turns into a full-fledged coupe.

The fifth model of the "troika" E90

2005 marked the end of the seemingly ever-popular version of the E46 and the emergence of the fifth generation BMW 3 Series in the form of a new body codenamed E90. There was no radical change in style, but the appearance of the "troika" was brought in accordance with the design of the higher models. The basis of the machine was the platform of the 1st series. However, the dimensions of the body have increased significantly and amounted to 4520x1813x1424 mm. The increase in the wheelbase has reached a parameter of 2760 mm. But the most interesting thing is another fact - the increase in dimensions did not bring an increase, but a decrease in the weight of the car, the designers have thoroughly worked out the possibility of using such durable materials as aluminum and magnesium in the body. A 755 mm front overhang, an already chrome-plated radiator grill and enlarged rear-view mirrors significantly added to the sporty appearance. As the base engine for the 32оi model, a 2.2-liter gasoline power unit with a capacity of 150 hp is used, the 325i and 330i received 218 and 258 hp engines, respectively.

After six months, the world was presented new station wagon with the traditional name Touring. An interesting fact it was that technical part sedan and station wagon are absolutely identical, the only difference is in the body. Deserves special attention luggage compartment station wagon, because the maximum useful volume of the trunk has reached 1385 liters.

September 2000 6th pleased the new coupe of the 3 series. I was also surprised by the appearance of the body: the front end became more sloping and lowered, the front bumper of a new design, updated taillights.

And 2010 was a special year for the coupe and convertible, because they came out updated versions... Redesigned headlights, redesigned bumper with air intakes, wider bonnet and led lights, the curved lines at the rear and the body-colored rear spoiler underline the sporty character of the vehicle.

Throughout 36 years, the BMW concern has constantly developed its advantage in the sports car segment of the middle class.

At the same time, the cars of the 3rd series became the generally recognized benchmark in this race. However, despite titles and ranks, bMW company constantly improving its models and monitoring its status as the best manufacturer.

BMWs are German and reliable cars that can serve for a very long time if the owner takes good care of the car and maintains it correctly. But basically, very often on the market you can find a 3-series BMW in the back of an E46 with problems related to the suspension, engine and body.

How much these problems will cost the owners of these cars, we will now find out.

When you buy BMW 3 Series in the aftermarket, then you can be sure that the mileage of this car is real, because it will not be possible to tweak the odometer, since the kilometers traveled are recorded simultaneously on several electronic units, even on the flash drive of the ignition key there is data on the mileage. Therefore, it will not be possible to synchronously change all mileage data in all locations.

The key has a built-in battery and it is recharged only when it is in the ignition. So, it is advisable to use both keys that come with the kit so that they are recharged. You can remove such data from the key as the year of manufacture of the car, VIN-code, equipment, engine number, mileage, etc.

The headlights are equipped with plastic glasses that grow cloudy over time, but they are inexpensive (15 euros each) and can be easily changed because they are fastened with latches. There is no such problem with xenon headlights. As for the headlight washer nozzles, they can wedge in the cold.

When buying this model, you must very carefully check the condition of the body. Although the corrosion protection is high, after about 9 years, rust may appear on the wheel arches, near the license plate lights. If there is bloated paint on the body, this means that it was not done really quality repair body, more serious suspension or steering problems may arise in the future. Therefore, before buying it is imperative check wheel alignment, if the suspension has not yet been killed, and at the same time it is not possible to set the wheels correctly, then it is better not to buy this instance.

If the car was in an accident, then this can be identified using the battery in the trunk. There is a so-called black box on the positive wire, with a special cartridge that breaks during a strong blow to disconnect the power circuit, this is done for safety. To change this cartridge you need to spend 150 euros. By the way, if you decide disconnect the battery terminals in the trunk, then you must start with the negative wire so that the igniter does not work.

On pre-styling versions, it can squeeze out the cups where the front shock absorbers are attached, and the body can also crack in those places where the rear subframe is attached due to driving on the harsh Russian roads. After restyling, these places were strengthened, but for those who like quick starts at traffic lights, you need to be ready to cook the body, even on post-styled cars.

Rust does not spare the electrician, the first the plafonds that highlight the number fail, as well as an electric button on the trunk lock. To remedy the situation - you have to change the entire trim of the trunk lid. Moreover, it is not cheap - if you take unpainted, it will cost 100 euros, and painted in the desired color costs 300 euros. And if a signal appears that the light bulb has burned out, you must first check the contacts on the wiring connectors, which may turn green over time.

The same situation can deliver problems with climate control and engine cooling system... You can reanimate the terminals, but this is not for long, you still need to install new harnesses.

And it also happens that the locks on the doors do not respond to the commands of the key-fob. The key can only open the driver's door. In this situation, you need to install a new the electronic unit, which will be responsible for the power windows and side mirrors.

In addition, the cable mechanism that lifts the windows creaks, and the grease dries out over time, and if the windows are completely lowered, they will rattle inside the doors when the car hits the pits.

May also turn off the displays at the climate control, and if the control cascade of resistors or the climate control unit burns out, then the fan on the stove will work spontaneously, change the speed independently, or even turn off altogether. And if one of the 2 sensors fails, the fuel level indicator on the instrument panel will be buggy. One of these sensors is part of the fuel pump; a new unit of this kind will cost 420 euros.

In the cabin, "wooden" inserts are considered a weak point, which can crack after several years of operation. As for the leather on the seats, it is very durable, does not tear and does not rub, even after 220,000 km the color may simply change slightly in the most frequently used seats.

In general, the quality of the interior finishing materials is high, and even after a fairly long period of operation, the interior remains quite beautiful. And some of them even have 2-layer glass on the rear and side windows. Such glasses could be ordered as an option.

In terms of roominess in the rear seats, the rear is a bit cramped when compared to other cars in this class.

BMW motors

Yes, they are reliable, but they require care. Only low-viscosity should be poured synthetic oil 0W30 or 5W40 with factory approvals LL-98, LL-01 and LL-04. Also, motors do not like flushing the lubrication system, feeling the chemistry in the new oil. Sprockets, chains and their tensioners may even fail, all this will cost 1000 euros along with the work. Therefore, it is better not to flush the lubrication system, otherwise the engine will not serve even 250,000 km.

If appeared specific knock under valve cover , this means that the end of the variable valve timing mechanism has come, in this case, it is the Double Vanos, which costs 800 euros. And on engines with 4 cylinders and the Valvetronic system, one should not save on oil, always top up it if necessary, because in the future there may be ignition problems or misfires.

You always need to monitor the oil level, there should be enough of it, the car consumes oil normally, a liter of oil can go away after 2 thousand kilometers. And it's better not to rely on oil level sensors, because they can be buggy. Therefore, the oil must be checked with a dipstick. Oil consumption increases especially if jammed crankcase ventilation valve... Oil leaks from everywhere. A new such valve costs 50 euros.

And on 6-cylinder engines, oil begins to flow through the oil seals if the engine overheats. These 6-cylinder engines overheat no more often than other BMW engines, although the consequences of overheating are very serious - the shape of the aluminum cylinder head is deformed, even grinding it will not help, and if you change it completely, this procedure will cost 3000 euros ...

The main reasons for the increased temperature in the cooling system can be the plastic impellers on the water pump, which rotate on the axis. After restyling, these impellers became metal, and one less cause of overheating. Also, viscous fan clutches, which are installed on 4-cylinder motors and electric motors on 6-cylinder motors, are not particularly reliable.

In order for the radiator to cool better, it must be cleaned once a year; cleaning the radiator will cost about 70 euros. And the main reason for the increased temperature in the engine is usually expansion tank if a valve is jammed in its cover or plastic fasteners are broken that hold the thermostat elements inside the case.

It happens that 6-cylinder engines do not develop their full power after 4000 rpm, and during idle move chirping flaps of the system for changing the length of the intake tract DISA. This means that the time has come to change the actuator of the drive of this system. It costs 220 euros. As for the spark plugs, they serve no more than 40,000 km. They need to be replaced, because faulty spark plugs will lead to the fact that individual ignition coils will also have to be replaced, each of which costs 40 euros.

As for the BMW 3-series in the back of an E46 with a diesel engine, there are few such modifications on the Russian market, mainly cars brought from Europe, and half of all Europeans are in a station wagon. Diesel modifications are quite problematic. For example, in 3-liter diesel versions fuel pumps high pressure required replacement. And on 2-liter diesel engines, fuel pressure sensors and air flow meters often failed.

Even the injectors last no more than 150,000 km, replacing each injector will cost about 300 euros.

Transmission

5-stage automatic boxes ZF Steptronic - are reliable, they have the ability to manually shift gears. These automatic transmissions are not inferior to manual transmissions in terms of reliability. Until 2001, boxes from General Motors were installed on 4-cylinder versions, but one cannot say about them that they are reliable, even without having traveled 200 thousand km. these American automatic transmissions may require major overhauls with the replacement of torque converters, bearings and their seals. The price of such a renovation can be 2000 euros. There are configurations with robotic boxes SMG. As a rule, they were installed on the restyled 325i and 330i models. There are gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. On these boxes, sometimes the control electronics are buggy, and there are cases that after 100,000 km. mileage, you have to change the clutch, which will cost you 350 euros.

As for manual gearboxes, the backstage bushing may become loose in their drive, after which the reverse and first gears will be difficult to engage. And there are cases that after 120 thousand km. the gear shift shaft seals begin to leak. Approximately 200,000 km. will be able to service the clutch with a hydraulic drive, which has an automatic adjustment of the free wheeling. But if you drive aggressively, the clutch resource will be reduced by about 2 times. If you notice problems with the clutch, then do not hesitate to replace. Because, a worn-out driven disk will help break down the dual-mass flywheel - knocks will appear at the moment of closure. Replacing the flywheel will cost € 850.

If after 150,000 km. while starting off, there will be a hum or vibration at the propeller shaft, then you must immediately take action and not leave it to chance. It is enough to replace the intermediate support, which costs 80 euros, and the elastic coupling, which costs 90 euros. If you delay, then you will have to buy a new shaft assembly for 700 euros.

On rear axle the gearbox does not require attention, sometimes you can check the oil level in it. But the silent blocks for attaching the gearbox to the subframe sometimes break.

By the way, there are hatchbacks, they have less rear overhang, so it is 280mm shorter than the sedan, but the chassis and wheelbase are exactly the same. The appearance of the E46 Compact hatchback is distinguished by the headlights - there are 4 separate headlights. Also, the taillights are equipped with transparent glass.

But if you compare coupe and sedan, then here the design is completely different: they do not even have the same body parts. Kupeshki are a little longer than sedans, and the ground clearance is 5 cm lower for 2-door cars. Because the coupe comes with a sports suspension.

there is sedans with a package "for Russia", which includes motor control programs designed for winter operation, lower-temperature fluids are used in the power steering and shock absorbers, the suspension is also more reinforced, and there is a steel motor protection. Even the ground clearance is 22 mm more. due to the fact that springs of greater length are used and there are metal spacers. Shock absorbers and stabilizers themselves lateral stability more rigid.

Suspension

The suspension has weak spots - front levers made of aluminum, to these levers are attached two non-removable ball joints and stabilizer struts. On cars produced until 2001 these levers have not served more than 50,000 km. After restyling, new levers began to be used, they became wider, but at the same time they are interchangeable with the levers of pre-styling versions. New ones can last more than 80,000 km, and the price for them remains the same as for the old ones - 250 euros.

About 100,000 km. there is a rubber rear silent block, which can be changed separately from the lever, for 90 euros. The stabilizer bars serve about the same, but they cost less - the front ones are for 40 euros, and the rear ones are 20 euros.

On the all-wheel drive versions of the 3 series, the suspension is more robust, the arms are made of steel rather than aluminum, and the internal ball joint can be changed separately for 120 euros. Shock absorbers last at least 100,000 km. The new front shocks cost 560 euros and the rear 300 euros per set. The rear suspension uses a three-wishbone, its joints will have to be changed after about 160,000 km. Generally, to sort out rear suspension you have to spend about 800 euros.

But the most annoying problem in the BMW 3-series the steering mechanism is considered, in which a play appears to 80,000 km, and after 130,000 km. it turns into a knock. This situation can be corrected only by replacing the mechanism completely. This will cost 1000 euros. Even the tips on the steering rods in European versions last longer than the steering mechanism itself, but on the eastern versions the tips will last about 50,000 km.

The brake system is strong enough, only consumables need to be changed. Sometimes ABS sensors can fail due to winter slush. But replacing each sensor will cost about 20 euros. But if these sensors are not changed, then the stability control system will not work either. And if it is the ABS sensor on the right wheel that is out of order, then the odometer and fuel consumption calculator will not work.

But all of the above problems should not be scary, BMW E46 is technically quite difficult, but the driving qualities of these cars are at their best. If you do not save money and are not late with the service, then such cars will last a very long time.

Aftermarket prices for BMWs in the third series are not dropping as quickly as those of BMWs in the fifth or seventh series. For example, 5-ku or 7-ku with big motor the price falls by 16% per year, and by 3-ku by about 12% per year from the original cost of the car. So, BMW 3-series is in great demand in the Russian used car market. Today, for versions with a 2.2 and 2.5 liter engine, they ask for about 700,000 rubles. Versions with a 4-cylinder engine are 100,000 rubles cheaper. But 3-ki in the back of a coupe or convertible, of which there are very few, cost 120,000 rubles more.

Generally, 3rd bMW series in the back of E46 considered one of the most reliable models bMW brands, most importantly, when buying, pay attention to the owner, because the condition of the car depends on the previous owner.

Feelings of the BMW 325i

The motor behaves just fine, it seems that a car with such a motor can do everyone at a traffic light. The 5-speed Steptronic automatic also shifts as it should. The car reacts to the gas pedal quickly, but smoothly, without a harsh reaction.

The brakes also provide a pleasant sensation from the springy pedal. Thanks to the oriental package that is designed for russian roads, it was possible to achieve excellent smoothness, the suspension smoothes out bumps, and the car goes very smoothly.

Even in basic configuration The BMW 325i includes the ASC + T traction control system, which fulfills its role perfectly. And if you turn off the electronics, then on the ice you can drift perfectly without harm to the car. BMW does not immediately enter a skid, and when the slip has already begun, then it fades out by itself, if the driver does everything right.

It is impossible not to recall the charged versions of the BMW 3 Series MZ with a motor, the volume of which is 3.2 liters with a capacity of 343 liters. with. This version appeared in 2000 and features a large front bumper, wider wheel arches and oval-shaped rearview mirrors. Initially, even before 2001, the SMG-I robot box or mechanical box 6 steps. Then came the second generation SMG robot. In terms of reliability, the M-ki are as reliable as conventional 3-series BMWs.

But with M there are some peculiarities in operation, for example, you need to fill in a special oil: Castrol TWS Motorsport or Castrol Formula RS. For lovers of aggressive driving rear gear can fail after 150,000 km. As for the replacement of spare parts, the original parts for the M3 are 1.5 times more expensive than for the usual 3-ku, and in most cases, the parts must be ordered, and this is a rather long process.

The first BMW of the third series was introduced in 1975. This model was offered with a two-door sedan and a convertible body made by Baur. The car was equipped with engines ranging from 1.6 to 2.3 liters (75-143 hp), and the most powerful versions of the BMW 320 and BMW 323 could be easily recognized by the twin headlights. In total, up to 1983 more than 1.3 million "three rubles" were made.

2nd generation (E30), 1982–1994

The second "treshka" has been produced since 1982. The choice of bodies has become much larger: coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon. The line of engines was opened by a 1.6-liter engine. The top version of the BMW 325i was equipped with a 2.5 liter 170 hp engine. with. Since 1985, they began to install on this model diesel engine 2.4 l (naturally aspirated, and later turbocharged), in 1986 the all-wheel drive version of the 325ix appeared. And 1986 was marked by the appearance of a charged version. Production of the third series sedans ceased in 1990, convertibles in 1993, and station wagons in 1994. A total of 2.3 million cars were produced.

3rd generation (E36), 1990-2000

The next generation of the model appeared in 1990. First, cars with sedan and coupe bodies appeared in car dealerships, in 1994 the model range was replenished with a convertible, and in 1995 a station wagon and a three-door Compact hatchback were presented. Four-cylinder gasoline engines had a volume of 1.6 or 1.8 liters and a power of 100 to 140 liters. with. The choice of traditional in-line "sixes" was slightly wider: 2.0 (150 hp), 2.5 (170 or 192 hp) and 2.8 (193 hp). Also, turbodiesels with a volume of 1 were installed under the hood of the "three-ruble" 7 liters (90 HP) and 2.5 liters, which developed 115 or 143 forces, but coupes and convertibles had only gasoline engines... All BMWs of the third series with the E36 index were rear-wheel drive, there were no four-wheel drive modifications. The "charged" versions had a name.

The cars were produced at factories in Germany (Munich), Mexico and the USA. In total, just over three million cars were made by 2000.

4th generation (E46), 1998-2007

BMW sedans of the third series with the E46 index have been produced since 1998, a year later a coupe and a station wagon appeared, and in 2000 - a convertible and a three-door hatchback. In 2001 it was introduced. When creating the model, the efforts of the engineers were aimed not at increasing power, but primarily at increasing body rigidity and improving handling.

The wide range of power units consisted of four-cylinder engines with a volume of 1.8 liters (115 hp), 1.9 liters (105 or 118 hp) and 2.0 liters (118 or 143 hp), as well as in-line six-cylinder engines 2.0 (150 HP), 2.2 (170 HP), 2.5 (170-192 HP), 2.8 (193 HP) and 3.0 (231-238 HP). The two-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel developed 116-150 hp. sec., and six-cylinder 2.9 and 3.0 - 184 and 204 liters. with. respectively. This time, the "treshka" BMW could be not only rear-wheel drive, but also all-wheel drive, these were modifications of the BMW 325xi and BMW 330xi. In 2002, the model was restyled.

Car production was carried out at factories in Germany, South Africa, Mexico, China, and since 2001 - at the Kaliningrad Avtotor. The release of Compact hatchbacks was completed in 2004 with the appearance, other versions lasted on the conveyor until 2006. In total, 3.1 million cars were made during this time.

5th generation (E90), 2005–2012

The fifth generation "treshki" debuted in 2005 with a sedan body, which received the E90 index. The car has become slightly larger than the predecessor model, thanks to which the rear passengers have more space. The car received a rear multi-link suspension, and active steering was offered as an option.

In the same 2005, the station wagon (E91) appeared, in 2006 the model range was replenished (E92), and in 2007 - (E93). The assembly of cars for Russia was organized at the Kaliningrad Avtotor.

The base model BMW 316i was equipped with a 1.6-liter engine producing 122 hp. with. The two-liter four-cylinder engine developed 129-177 forces, depending on the modification. Inline "six" had a volume of 2.5 liters (177-218 liters. From.) And three liters (218-272 liters. From.) Also on the machines put a six-cylinder engine 3.0 with double turbocharging capacity of 306 or 326 forces. Turbo diesel engines 2.0 and 3.0 developed from 116 to 286 liters. with. In 2008, the most powerful version of the car with a gasoline eight-cylinder engine was presented.

In 2009, BMW sedans and station wagons of the third series underwent a slight restyling, and at the end of 2011 they were replaced by a new generation model. Two-door versions are still in production.

All series are united by a common concept that distinguishes and has always distinguished these cars in the company's model range. The basis of this concept is a sports orientation for the mass market segment, which, on the one hand, makes this series the most pleasant for the driver and his ambitions, on the other hand, it makes the car cheaper - after all, luxury and gloss are not required in sports. As for other common features of the bmw 3 - the dimensions are minimal (sometimes to the detriment of passengers), modest weight, moderate fuel consumption, low price compared to other series, and high concentration on the road!

All Bodies BMW 3 Series

Models have been produced since 1975 (E21 marking). Now cars come in 5 types of body:
  • F30 - sedan
  • F34 - hatchback
  • F31 - station wagon
  • E92 - coupe
  • E93 - convertibles

The last two positions belong to the previous generation. Even earlier there were generations E46, E36, E30 and E21 - in ascending order of age. Until the E46 inclusive, the marking was in accordance with the base body, and the difference between the types was added (for example: BMW E36i or BMW E36tu). As you can see, the last two generations come with their own body markings.

As a rule, any characteristic of a BMW 3 Series contains the words: "sporty", "quality", "bmw". These three magic words combine to produce amazing results. So, BMW 3 series models are officially recognized as the best-selling, in 2005. 40% of the group's sales fell on the third series. And in general, all three from time to time fall into the list of the best-selling cars in Europe, according to reviews of the BMW 3 series, according to reviews of automotive markets and their results. Prices for today's current new models start at 1,370,000 rubles.

Regardless of the type of engine and body, the BMW 3 Series provides high driving comfort. The triple is perfect for cornering thanks to its perfect weight distribution, excellent gearbox and precise steering.

If we talk about new ones, then the most common on the market are BMW 3 sedans with the factory designation e90, their appearance is somewhat spoiled by the taillights, which are sometimes associated with Daewoo Lanos.

The dimensions of the BMW 3 and primarily the dimensions of the interior vary depending on the body type. Station wagon e91 ideal for large family, long journeys and transportation of bulky items. The trunk volume of the model is the same (460 liters), but access to it is easier, and the tailgate glass opens separately.

The cost coupe e92 slightly higher compared to the station wagon and sedan. Modest dimensions allow only two people to fit on back row... Despite this, there will be no discomfort with the growth of passengers up to 180 cm during the trip. An electrically operated seat belt system is provided for the driver and front passenger.

All BMW 3 Series bodies come with rear wheel drive... There are also specimens with four-wheel drive xDrive. Equipped electronic control the center load ensures the distribution of the entire force on one axle, only and including on the front. Under standard conditions, 60% of the torque is also transferred to the rear axle.

Among the gasoline models, the 318i has proven itself well after 2008. Among the diesel engines one can note the 320d with a two-liter Common turbodiesel after 2008. The 325d model with a three-liter turbodiesel after 2007 is also of interest, its disadvantages include high fuel consumption ...
