Advantages and disadvantages of the UMZ 417 engine

The production of this unit began in 1989 and to this day it continues to be produced at the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant. Due to the use of aluminum alloys for the manufacture of body parts, the UMZ 417 engine has a relatively low weight. It has the following advantages:

Description

The UMZ 417 engine is a classic four-cylinder power unit with an in-line arrangement of cylinders, the pistons of which rotate one common crankshaft.

The motor is equipped with a carburetor, a contact ignition distributor and an OHV-type gas distribution mechanism with a single lower camshaft.

The body and cylinder head of the UMP 417 are made of aluminum. The casings, made of cast iron, are fitted into the block through rubber rings, which reduces its strength and is one of the main design flaws of this power unit.

In general, the design of the UMZ 417 engine is similar to the design and is further development UMP 414.

UMP 417 differs from engine 414:

  • increased compression ratio;
  • another camshaft;
  • enlarged intake valves.

In some modifications, the UMP 417 was equipped with crankshaft from the later 421 motor, which was installed without the use of stuffing box packing.

As for the power unit produced by the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant (ZMZ 402), there are even fewer differences.

The main difference is that the cylinder liners are set through copper gaskets, which made the cylinder block stronger.

A significant disadvantage that affects performance characteristics motor, is the use of a type 4-1 exhaust manifold, which reduces its power at medium and high speeds.

All other components - camshafts and crankshafts, pistons, connecting rods, rings, pushers and rods - are the same. There are differences that are cosmetic in nature and do not affect the operation of the power unit.

Among a large number modifications of the UMZ 417 engine are considered the main ones:

  1. UMP 417.10 - was installed on UAZ 3151 vehicles (gasoline A-76);
  2. UMP 4175.10 - operated on Gazelle vehicles. It has increased power (98 hp) and has a compression ratio of 8.2, which is necessary to use A-92 gasoline;
  3. UMZ 4178.10 is the most common modification with a two-chamber carburetor, which allows:
  • Use the cylinder head from the UMZ 421 engine, which has enlarged exhaust valves with a diameter of 39 mm (UMZ 4178.10-10). The crankshaft in this modification is equipped with an oil seal instead of stuffing box packing.
  • To aggregate the motor, for example, with a power steering (UMZ 4178.10-03) or a diaphragm clutch (UMZ 4178.10-52).

Maintenance

Maintenance of power units produced by UMP is not complicated and comes down to regular:

  • changing engine oil - after 10 thousand kilometers;
  • adjusting the thermal clearances of the timing valves - after every 15 thousand kilometers.

Malfunctions

Tuning

Carburetor power units are rarely tuned to increase their power. This is due to the fact that its significant increase is possible only when replacing carburetor system power supply to injection (distributed injection).

The cost of such an alteration is commensurate with the purchase and installation of an UMZ 421 injection motor, which is subsequently subjected to tuning.

However, the UMZ 417 engine can be subjected to a simple alteration, which will allow it to slightly increase its power. This requires:

  1. Balance the cylinder-piston group;
  2. Increase the compression ratio in the cylinders to 9.2 by milling the cylinder head to a height of 95 mm.
  3. Replace regular camshaft on the narrow-phase "OKB Engine".
  4. Cut the exhaust ports to 39 mm and install the appropriate timing valves.
  5. Replace the exhaust manifold with a manifold from the 421 engine.
  6. Change the outlet pipe to a 51 mm pipe.

After performing the above operations, the engine power will increase to 100 hp. from.

Raise the power of the power unit by another 10 liters. from. it is possible, if additionally:

  • polish the combustion chambers until a mirror-like surface is obtained;
  • to lighten the heavy piston group and crankshaft with their subsequent balancing.

Aluminum alloy engine block. The cylinders of engines 4178 and 4179 are made in the form of removable wet liners, cast from special cast iron. The upper part of the liner is sealed by clamping the liner collar between the block and the block head through a gasket, and the lower part - through a ring made of oil and petrol resistant rubber.



Aluminum alloy cylinder head with plug-in seats and valve guides. A gasket made of asbestos cloth impregnated with graphite is installed between the block and the head. Gasket thickness - (compressed) 1.5 mm. To avoid adhesion of the gasket to the block and the head, it is rubbed on both sides with graphite powder before putting it in place. To ensure a uniform and tight fit of the cylinder head to the gasket, tighten the nuts in the sequence shown in the figure, in two steps: the first time - preliminary, with less effort, the second - finally. Design

Four-stroke four-cylinder gasoline carburetor with a contact ignition distributor, with in-line cylinders and pistons that rotate one common crankshaft, with a single lower camshaft. The engine has a closed-type forced circulation liquid cooling system. Lubrication system - pressure and spray.

The cylinder block is aluminum with cast iron liners. At UMZ-417, the liners are planted through rubber rings, in contrast to the ZMZ-402, which fit through copper gaskets. Unfortunately the rubber rings reduce the strength of the 417 motor block. The block has no stiffeners. Only on later engines did 3-4 ribs appear. The UMZ-417 unit has a mount for an oil filter from a VAZ-2101.
If we continue to talk about the similarities and differences between the UMZ-417 and ZMZ-402 engines, then we can say that the crankshaft, camshaft, connecting rods, pistons, rings, pushers and rods are the same. The liners are different due to the different fit. The flywheel of the 417th is larger in diameter and heavier, respectively, the bell is also larger in size. At ZMZ, the packing is put into the groove in the block and the crankshaft cover, and at UMP it is screwed and crimped with stamped steel plates, which ultimately has a bad effect on the tightness of the structure.
At UMP 417, coolant is taken and supplied to the cylinder head, as a result of uneven engine cooling. The ZMZ 402 pump is more reliable than the 417th, it has an oil seal, not fiber. But this only applies to the old-style pump! Now on new pumps for the 417th motor, an oil seal is used.
It is important to mention that the exhaust manifold on the UMP 417 has a 4-1 design, which crushes the engine at medium and high speeds.

Modifications
