Computing power of the car

BRAND "Lexus" in recent years has been striving to win European buyers, but nevertheless, the priority task for the Japanese is to please the Americans, because 26 times more executive "Lexus" are bought overseas than in the Old World. From the first minutes of driving the Lexus LS460, I had a clear image in my head of a wealthy US citizen who would buy this new product.

Here is the menu on the dashboard offers a variety of high-tech "autopilots" that will slow down if the car in front slows down; accelerate to the desired speed when the path is clear; keep the selected distance and even steer (!) to keep the car in its lane ... Not everyone will master all the levers and buttons responsible for advanced functions without practice, but who will figure them out on the fly? Well, maybe a Wall Street yuppie, or a consulting firm, or a law firm. Anyone who buys the most expensive and most advanced laptop and really uses all of its functions: he needs to make transactions on the stock market on the go, have access to the workflow of a large corporation online, travel around the clock through archives, databases and libraries on the Internet ...

Riding without hands

Lexus does not have systems like BMW's iDrive and Mercedes' Command, so there is a scattering of keys on the center console.

Further, there is a feeling that my "Lexus" "caught" on the car in front of the towing cable, or rather a "rigid hitch". It picks up speed - and we accelerate smoothly, it slows down - and we slow down. It is generally believed that such active cruise control is only suitable for driving on direct autobahns. But on the outskirts of Nice, the roads twist in cunning rings, go up and down sharply, and the “LS460” did not give up in front of these difficulties. It turned out to be convenient to ride on autopilot. The feet could be completely removed from the pedals.

But hands should not be removed from the steering wheel! It seems that an icon was shining on the display, which means that the car was automatically kept in its lane ... Later it turned out that this did not mean anything. So it's not far before the accident! Probably, sellers in car dealerships will have to arrange special instructions for buyers, otherwise they will be embarrassed, as with me.

Here the road is straightened and the markings are perfect. I take my hands off the steering wheel, but then the car starts to “walk” along the lane, and the electronics either work (steer and notify the driver with a sound signal), then no. After the experiment led to an exit into the oncoming lane, it had to be stopped.

It's good that the truck ahead was not approaching too fast. I pointed the Lexus back to my lane and knocked on wood. On a wooden steering wheel.

One way or another, Russian buyers will still not have the opportunity to test for themselves the pros and cons of advanced systems. In any case, in the next year or two, the aforementioned functions on the “Russian” Lexuses will not be available. Our state does not yet allow the use of radio frequencies on which active cruise control radars operate. For the same reason, there will be no system to assist in reverse parking. A camera that monitors the markings is also not expected (it is with the radars in the complex). Even the standard Western GPS navigation system, Russians will have to wait another year and a half (!) (Permission for this type of device has already been received, but problems arose with the adaptation of specific Lexus equipment). A banal rear-view camera to assist with parking will not be installed for us either.

All that remains is ... the car itself.

Wayward but delicate

WHILE you are quietly rolling along the Alps-Maritime (automatic transmission in “Drive” mode), the number of the gear engaged is not displayed on the dashboard. What difference does it make? But because of this, the phlegmatic driver who does not use the manual gearshift mode will never know that there is a revolutionary eight-speed automatic transmission - the first in the world. And this "automatic", it is said, is especially fast-firing - it changes speeds almost twice as fast as the six-speed automatic transmission of the previous generation model. Let's check?

The rear armrest control unit is responsible for the four-zone climate control and the “Mark Levinson” audio system.

On the move, I move the selector to the left, and the number “2” lights up on the screen. I don’t know how anyone, but it was very interesting for me to try with my own hands to sort out all eight speeds.

I sink the gas pedal and put my hand on the lever: third gear, fourth ... All the 380-strong power of the 4.6-liter engine is transmitted to the wheels in a continuous flow, without jerks. You push the selector and the speeds change quickly and smoothly. It just seemed not very convenient that to increase the gear it was necessary to move the lever forward. With intensive acceleration, it is more convenient to pull the handle back (this is how the boxes on sports cars are arranged) - this movement of the hand is more natural, because when you pick up speed, the inertia force itself pulls your hand back.

The roads around Nice are winding mountain serpentines with kilometer-long elevation changes. And that means constant switching. But on winding ups and downs, things don't get beyond fourth gear, there is nowhere to experience the eighth. But what if you enable it forcibly?

The revs dropped almost to idle, but “Lexus” climbs up the hill without tension and even starts to accelerate smoothly in response to pressing the gas pedal. Is the thrust of the advanced Japanese V8, which combines direct and multipoint injection, that much? Or is it still not the eighth ...

As it turned out later, the box is disingenuous. Here I am driving slowly in third gear, not exceeding 50 km / h. I do not touch the automatic machine selector, but only sharply press on the gas. The automatic transmission clearly works in the "kick-down" mode, you can hear that it instantly pushes the reduced speed, and the revs soar to 4.500. And the display is still the number “3”. In a moment, the tachometer needle reaches 6.500, the gear changes ... The screen still shows "three".

It turns out that the designers have provided protection from an inexperienced driver. That is, the box obeys only as long as it seems acceptable to it. Here you accelerate the car in a normal rhythm - the speeds will turn on exactly as you chose. And he pressed sharply on the gas, but did not turn on the lowered one - the box will turn on itself, it will not ask you and even will not tell you about it.

And, of course, Lexus will not crawl uphill in eighth gear. Will refuse! But delicately: the car will inform the driver that the eighth is on. Like, I listen.

Even small triangular windows in the doors are equipped with separate curtains.

In Nice, we tested the most luxurious Lexuses on offer in Europe, but Russian buyers will be able to order an even “more elite” version. The LS460L version is 12 cm longer than the standard version and is available as an option with a special “Ottoman” chair mounted on the rear right. It can turn into an ottoman. The footrest extends from the bottom, the backrest deviates by 45 degrees (for a standard chair, a maximum of 37).

The old sedan was not accepted by many buyers precisely because of the faceless old-fashioned design, the main value of which was that the Lexus was a bit like the legendary Mercedes S-class with a W140 body.
