Powerful off-road vehicle Jeep Commander. Jeep Commander - description of the Jeep commander model specifications

General information about the model

Jeep Commander is the first 7-seater SUV in lineup Jeep. It is built on the same XK platform as the model Grand cherokee (Commander is only 5 cm long). From a technical point of view, it is a five-door vehicle with a front longitudinal engine and a monocoque Uniframe body with an integrated frame. Depending on the version, the Jeep Commander has rear drive, permanent four-wheel drive without downshifting and center differential lock and four-wheel drive with all "off-road options".

The main external features of the Commander are an angular body made in the corporate style classic models Jeep, and the "family" radiator grille with seven slots and JEEP lettering above them.

Auto production was carried out from 2006 to 2010: cars for America were produced at the Chrysler plant in Detroit, and for Europe - at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria. Commander was offered to buyers in three configuration options: Base (aka Sport), Limited and Overland (2007-2009).

Originally new model Jeep, created on the same platform as the Grand Cherokee, was proposed to be called the Grand Wagoneer, during tests the car was hiding under the abbreviation YK, but then it was decided to assign it the name of the legendary Studebaker, produced until 1966. The presentation of the novelty took place in 2005 in New York, and, initially, it was positioned as a 7-seater version of the Grand Cherokee, and only then "knocked out" to the flagships of the lineup. The Commander combined the classic Jeep chopped exterior with a modern, comfortable interior.

Jeep Commander Features

One of the main features is the three rows of seats arranged "amphitheater" (the third row sits above all). The roof of the SUV also has a "stepped" shape and rises higher at the rear of the vehicle to ensure comfort for all passengers.

To visually increase the space, three hatches fit into the interior - a large one above the front seats and two small ones above the rear (offered as an option).

Volume luggage compartment depends on the position of the seats: when the second and third rows are folded, this figure reaches 1770 liters (when unfolded - only 235 liters).

To once again emphasize the brutality of the origin of the Commander, the designers decided not to cover the bolts that secure the external plastic elements of the body (arch extensions, etc.).

In the American market, the car was offered with a base 3.7-liter gasoline engine, as well as more powerful 4.7- and 5.7-liter engines. For economical Europeans, a turbodiesel with a volume of "only" 3.0 liters was also developed. All motors were paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Pros and cons of an SUV

Since the Commander is built on the Grand Cherokee platform and has similar dimensions, it is also not inferior in cross-country ability. Thanks to powerful motors, the dynamics of the Commander are very impressive ( top version accelerates to a hundred in just 7.4 seconds), but the payback for fast driving is huge fuel consumption, which.

Despite the rather ergonomic interior, there is no reason to count on 7 full-fledged seats in the Commander: tall passengers in the third row feel cramped, and on uneven road surfaces they can hit their heads on the ceiling.

The Jeep Commander's weight (almost 2 tons), combined with a not too sharp steering wheel, make the car very specific in handling. Its element is leisurely trips on asphalt or moderate off-road.

Interesting about Jeep Commander

For the first time the name Commander appeared in the Jeep lineup back in 1999. This was the name of the concept of an electric vehicle with a body made of aluminum and composite materials. Another feature of this project was the hydraulically adjustable 100 mm ground clearance.

Commander's name automotive history met four times: in addition to the aforementioned Jeep and Studebaker, it was also worn by the Scammell truck and the Indian Mahindra SUV.

The Commander hit the market in the 65th anniversary year of Jeep. In honor of this event, a special version of the 65th Anniversary Edition was prepared in several corporate colors (Black, Light Khaki, Dark Khaki, Silver and Jeep Green) and with “Jeep 65” decals in the interior.

Along with the existing Commander modifications, another one was being prepared for release - the most powerful SRT-8. It was to be equipped with a 6.1-liter V8 biturbo engine. However, this project never reached serial production.

At the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, a Chrysler spokesman announced that a new incarnation of the seven-seater Jeep SUV is preparing for release, which this time will bring the Grand Wagoneer name back to life. So it is possible that the traditions of the Commander in the Jeep lineup will still find their continuation.

Jeep Commander Awards and Sales Results

The first two years, the car enjoyed excellent demand in the US market (in 2006, sales exceeded 88 thousand copies, while the Grand Cherokee had only 75 thousand), and then the results began to fall sharply. In the markets of Europe, China, South Africa and North Korea, Commander has also failed to achieve outstanding success. Jeep marketers have come to the conclusion that the 7-seater model not only does not attract new customers, but also "discourages" customers from the Grand Cherokee. As a result, in 2010 it was decided to discontinue production of the model. The "successor" to the Commander in 2011 was the Dodge Durango.

In the very first year of its presence on the market, Commander won the prestigious prize of the British 4x4 Magazine in the main category - "Off-road vehicle of the year". The jury gave the new product maximum points for functionality and a high level of cross-country ability.

Also in 2006, Jeep Commander was named the winner of the Russian SUV of the Year competition in the Full Size SUV category.

The Jeep Commander appeared in 2006 but was unveiled a year earlier at the New York Auto Show. When designing the model, the manufacturer turned to classic shapes with an angular design from the 40s. It features a large chrome grille, round headlights and a massive angular body. Classic under the hood american cars mighty V8.

The Commander is the largest Jeep offered in recent memory. Almost 5 meters long, 2 meters wide and high, weighing over 2 tons. All this is typical for the American automotive industry... The SUV is interesting not only for fans of the brand. It sold poorly in Russia. The market is dominated by representatives from Europe and North America.

Interior

Inside, the Jeep Commander cannot be confused with any other vehicle. Large, angular black dashboard, massive leather armchairs and comfy extras. The quality of interior finishing materials meets the standards of the American brand. The plastic is of poor quality, the accuracy of fit of the elements is average. Pseudo wood inserts and the audio system does not make much of an impression. But the insulation of the cabin is good. The interior has a pleasant turquoise lighting. The cab is well organized in terms of ergonomics.

Outside, Jeep Commander looks gorgeous and powerful. One gets the impression that he has roomy salon... But this is not the case, which is generally typical for Jeep. Especially cramped in the second row. Rear passengers feel like on a park bench. Electric front seats have a wide range of adjustments.

The Commander is the brand's first car with a third row of seats. There is no question of the convenience and comfort of the gallery passengers. The third row folds into the boot floor. The unfolded seats leave only 212 liters of volume in the trunk.

The car was offered in three main trim levels: Sport, Limited and Overland. In the US, the flagship version was the SRT-8. Basic modifications equipped with climate control, full power accessories, six speakers, on-board computer, airbags and curtains. There are also navigation and sunroof.

Engines

One of four engines was installed under the hood of this American giant. Three petrol and one diesel. The classic of the genre is a 5.7-liter HEMI petrol V8 with 326 or 334 hp. - depending on the modification. Also 4.7-liter with 231 hp. and the weakest of the gasoline - V6 3.7 l 213 hp. The high-torque 3.0-liter V6 CRD diesel offers 218 hp.

All Jeep Commander are all-wheel drive, except for the version with a 3.7-liter gasoline engine for the American market. More powerful petrol V8s have a beautiful and unique sound. The flagship HEMI is especially memorable. On idling these units are quite quiet. While driving on low revs, the engine in the cabin is barely audible. This is largely due to the good sound insulation. But after pressing the gas pedal, the pleasant rumble of the V8 evokes a unique feeling for the driver. Unfortunately, the dynamics are not impressive. She's average. It's all about the long gears of a classic 5-speed automatic, more than 2 tons of weight and not too much power density. Jeep engineers were faithful to old traditions and the era.

Gasoline engines are very greedy. The 4.7-liter unit burns at least 17 l / 100 km in the urban cycle. These are not the largest numbers, but in times of crisis and high fuel prices, the consumption is unpleasant. Gas installation? Engines are very good at running on gas. But orthodox devotees american cars rarely decide on retrofitting of this kind.

The 4.7 V8 Power Tech has a simple design: a cast iron block and two valve heads per cylinder. Typical disadvantages: burnout of the gasket under the block head, deformation of the exhaust manifolds and oil leaks.

Turbodiesel turned out to be more favorable. Its appetite lies within 15 l / 100 km, and the large torque allows you to feel confident both off-road and on highways. However, for fans of sonorous American motors, the bubbling diesel engine like it less. The engine went to the Commander from Mercedes. Unfortunately, after 200,000 km it may require expensive repairs. The injection system, the intake manifold, the turbocharger fail, and the timing chain is stretched.

Transmission and chassis

Jeep Commander, thanks to the relatively soft suspension, comfortable car... It looks more like a sofa on wheels than a true SUV. Nevertheless, one cannot reproach him for helplessness on the off-road. The car is much "stronger" than conventional SUVs. System all-wheel drive Quadra-Drive II difficult conditions works efficiently. It has two differentials (front and rear) with electronic control ELSD. This allows up to 100 percent of the torque to be transmitted to one wheel much faster. This scheme only applies to Commander and Grand Cherokee. Differentials should be carefully inspected periodically to spot leaks that cannot be ignored.

On the front axle of an American independent suspension, and at the back - a classic continuous bridge. Suspension Jeep Commander is well balanced for movement in various conditions - city / highway / off-road. However, overtaking by high speed a little risky. The car as a whole behaves confidently, but at high speeds it begins to sway from side to side.

Many elements of the Commander chassis are interchangeable with younger brother Grand Cherokee. Rack steering borrowed there, but with minor modifications. The bottom of the Overland version is completely covered with metal protection. The suspension is strong enough and inexpensive to repair.

Typical problems and malfunctions

The car is mechanically quite reliable. The only condition is regular service and good attitude. Spare parts are readily available and inexpensive. Archaic gasoline engines work flawlessly, however, like a modern turbodiesel. In the car, troubles are mainly caused by optional equipment... For example, heated seats (a typical Jeep disease), sunroof leaks (common and difficult to fix), and tire pressure sensors fail. As for the mechanics, gearboxes and differentials often leak. You cannot ignore the leak. It is necessary to find the deficiency as soon as possible and eliminate it. Sometimes the starter fails. ABS sensors and body iron are susceptible to corrosion. Most often, rust attacks Jeeps brought from the United States, which have been in a damp container for a long time.

Conclusion

Jeep Commander is really nice car... Its only serious drawback is high consumption fuel. But what else to expect from such a large engine. On the off-road side, the Commander is one of the leaders in its class. The modern Quadra-Drive II system provides excellent traction. Considering that the SUV weighs more than 2 tons, then the dynamics are quite acceptable. Large dimensions do their job - you feel respect on the road. The spirit of the classic Jeep lives in every element of the Commander: under the hood and in the interior. Commander is a really interesting proposition among the SUVs available on the market. The car represents the Jeep brand with dignity.

Mid-size sUV Jeep Commander made its world debut at the New York Auto Show in the spring of 2005 and went into commercial production in 2006. For the first two years, the car was in good demand among buyers, but later its sales began to steadily decline, especially in the US market. On the assembly line, the "American" held out until 2010, after which he finally "retired."

Outside, Jeep Commander is perceived as a car for real men - rough shapes with chopped outlines, trapezoidal wheel arches with trompe l'oeil-bolts on the expanders, a deliberately rough radiator grille with seven “family” slots and rectangular lighting technology. The SUV looks powerful, weighty and brutal.

The Commander is 4787 mm long, 1900 mm wide, 1826 mm high, and the wheelbase and ground clearance are 2781 mm and 210 mm, respectively. Depending on the version, the "American" weighs from 1992 to 2190 kg in "combat" form.

The interior of the Jeep Commander matches the exterior, cut in a masculine and simple style, completely devoid of smooth and sophisticated lines. The monumental center console is crowned with a multimedia complex with a color screen and “washers” of the climate system, and behind the weighty four-spoke “donut” of the steering wheel there is a laconic “toolbox” with analog devices. The interior of the SUV is assembled rather clumsily, and all panels are made of hard plastic: soft materials can be felt only on the steering wheel and door panels in the upper part.

The Commander's front seats with an excessively wide profile lack lateral support, but they provide a commanding high landing. Inhabitants of the second row of seats will definitely not complain about the tightness, but the "gallery" is suitable only for children or absolutely miniature people.

The Jeep Commander's luggage compartment volume ranges from 170 liters with a seven-seat layout to 1940 liters with the backs folded down back rows seats that form a completely flat floor. The full-size "spare wheel" at the car is suspended under the bottom.

The car weighs more than 2.3 tons, but a seven-seater SUV with a boot capacity of up to 1950 liters, respectively, looks massive and monumental. The car was produced in three modifications: Standard 4x2, Laredo 4x4 and Limited 4x4. One of three engines with a capacity from 210 to 326 was installed under the hood of the car. horse power...
