The system of rating the reliability of cars in the world
Reliability ratings of automobile models and brands are carried out all over the world and on each continent separately. Countries with large automotive markets also conduct their own reliability ratings. These ratings are usually initiated by analytical agencies and the automotive media.
Why are car reliability ratings carried out? The media and analytical agencies compose such ratings for their own earnings. Such information will always be in demand. This means that an agency that has published such a rating will be able to earn a lot from advertising that will be present on the pages of this rating.
- the market where cars are sold;
- car class (hatchback, crossover, sedan, SUV)
- the period of years of production of cars participating in the rating;
- a list of potential problems that may arise with each specific car model.
The reliability of each specific car model is ascertained by interviewing a certain sample of respondents who are the owners or drivers who directly operate these cars. Such polls are carried out in places where the greatest concentration of motorists is: service stations, car exhibitions, car dealerships, etc.
Potential vehicle problems include various possible breakdowns, malfunctions and shortcomings that were discovered by drivers during the operation of vehicles. The list is usually divided into several categories:
The table below lists the main categories of potential problems and their descriptions.
Breakdown categories | Description |

Auto Bild's annual quality rating was first published in 2001. The rating of each automaker consists of 7 indicators: the results of a study of the level of satisfaction of car buyers (8187 respondents), the number of recalled cars and cases renovation works, the reliability rating of the TUV report (which contains information on nearly 9 million total technical inspections), an analysis of the manufacturer's warranty policy and three categories, which contain the ratings of the editors of Auto Bild magazine. These assessments include long-term car test results, garage test results, and analysis of critical comments from more than 10,000 letters from readers of the magazine.
This time, Kia Motors became the winner of the rating. It is the only automaker to receive a top 1 rating for its warranty policy. The brand achieved extremely high scores in customer satisfaction surveys. It was also taken into account that no Kia cars were recalled in 2015, and the number of criticisms from Auto Bild readers was minimal. In addition, Kia vehicles received ratings of "very good" and "good" in all long-term tests (testing is carried out during operation at a distance of at least 100 thousand km).
Below are the results of the rating (maximum score - 1).
1-2. Kia (2.14), Mazda (2.14)

In the ranking of automakers not all brands are taken into account, so Jaguar, Land rover, Mitsubishi, Ram, Smart and Tesla do not have enough data to analyze.
- Top manufacturers (overall score / road test score / Consumer Report comments)
- Lexus. 78/76. Lexus builds luxurious and highly reliable cars. "
- Mazda. 75/76. Mazda is a brand that understands its identity and repeats its sporting DNA in every car.
- Toyota. 74/72. The main advantage of Toyota is its reliability. Toyota has focused on building solid, reliable, comfortable and highly popular vehicles.
- Audi. 73/81. This premium brand is distinguished by the production of cars with luxurious interiors and Quattro all-wheel drive systems.
- Subaru. 73/80. Subaru can finally consider itself one of the tech savvy automakers.
- Porsche. 70/84. It will be interesting to see how cost-saving technologies will align with brand standards and how technologically more sophisticated models will pass the test of time and reliability.
- Buick. 68/76. Buick is in the process of changing its boring image and embarking on a product revival.
- Honda. 69/71. Honda's upsides are high economy compared to competitors, very good reliability and little loss of resale value.
- Kia. 68/73. Kia makes smart cars that sell for less money than the leaders in their segments.
- BMW. 66/82. BMW had no trouble taking the 10th place.
- Acura. 65/78. The brand is positioned as a high-end, luxury car manufacturer from Honda. But Acura cars often lack the panache and quality of interior workmanship that go with luxury brands.
- Volvo. 65/76. Rugged and sedate, Volvo sedans, station wagons and SUVs are safe (or at least try to be) with a lot of the latter. electronic systems safety and collision avoidance systems
- Hyundai. 66/82. It's good that Hyundai has left the production of its bargain-priced vehicles in the past. The style and finishes of many of his car models are on the rise, but at the same time they remain the most available options in its segment.
- GMC. 61/73. Despite its "professional level", advertising slogans and some style differences, GMC is not far from its closest relative - Chevrolet
- Volkswagen. 60/76. With handling and a comfortable ride, most of the automaker's vehicles are more premium than their competitors.
- Lincoln. 59/74. Lincoln's reliability has left a lot to be desired in recent years, simply put, it has been uneven, largely due to the MyLincoln Touch electronic control interface, which was soon to be replaced, most Lincoln models did not go beyond the average points in the US consumer rating ... Lincoln still suffers from the lack of drive and luxurious ambiance that class leaders have.
- Infiniti. 59/76. Fittings and finishes are generally satisfactory, and the powertrains are top-notch. The problem is that over the past few years, Infiniti has stopped surprising shoppers and Consumer Reports.
- Nissan. 59/70. Has a controversial lineup. The company has suffered a serious decline in quality in cars such as the subcompact Versa and compact Sentra.
- Chevrolet. 59/71. On some metrics, such as reliability, Chevrolet models are clearly in the middle of the list, and in some cases even slightly lower.
- Cadillac. 58/77. Many models let buyers down with very unimportant reliability and the CUE information system, inconvenient to use, with ill-conceived navigation.
- Mercedes-Benz. 56/81. Models such as the CLA are markedly worse than other cars in the brand. She (CLA model) is tough in driving and does not meet the high demands and expectations of the Mercedes-Benz brand in many respects.
- Scion. 54/57. Toyota in its "stepdaughter" offers small economical, but noisy vehicleswhich are relatively practical and slightly sharper to drive than conventional Toyota models.
- Chrysler. 54/73. Chrysler's reliability has always been questionable, one year everything is good with it, the next is bad.
- Ford. 53/72. Late-model Ford cars drive like European sports sedans, from fast control, soft ride, but the reliability of most models is below average.
- Dodge. 52/71. Dodge's new styling has been improved enough, but it is still far from competing with many of the automakers on the list.
- Mini. 46/72. The mini-version of BMW's IDrive system offers a complex connection, but it is this that causes negative feelings in the first place when you get into the car. Fuel economy for the segment is pretty good, but not great. The Mini's reliability is disappointing.
- Jeep. 39/59. Low reliability.
- Fiat. 32/55. Despite the attractive appearance and fun driving, reliability upsets to the limit.

The reliability of cars according to the American company J.D. Power
Founded in 1968 by James David, the American Global Marketing Association J.D. Power is one of the best known for researching the reliability and quality of cars.Annual surveys conducted both in the United States and elsewhere in the world typically include analysis of problems that have arisen after three years of vehicle use (VDS), analysis of problems during first three months of operation (IQS), as well as the opinion of consumers about dealerships and the automotive service industry (APEAL).
Below are two rankings for 2015.
Reliability rating of 3 summer cars. A poll conducted by the company among 34 thousand owners of cars purchased in 2012 in the American market showed that the most reliable three-year-old cars in the United States, like the four previous years, are Lexus cars.
The final rating was compiled based on the number of faults per 100 vehicles. The average result was 147 defects, which is 14 points worse than last year and 21 points worse than 2013.
Most often, car enthusiasts noted problems with Bluetooth connectivity and errors in the operation of voice command recognition technology. Almost a third of all problems related to the operation of the power unit, and most of the complaints related to the transmission - the drivers were not satisfied with the sharp change of gears.
Experts also found that 56% of respondents who had no problems with their cars will “definitely” buy a car of the same brand next time, but only 43% of car owners will not change their chosen brand if they have three or more complaints about the car.

The Korean Hyundai and KIA were again victorious. The cars of these brands had less than 100 breakdowns per 100 cars. As for Japanese brands, for the first time their average failure rate dropped to 114 points, which is a point worse than that of Europeans.
Experts have already been quick to call this change of places a real milestone in the auto industry. " This is a real revolution in terms of quality. For a long time, Japanese cars were considered a true benchmark in quality matters. Now "Europeans" and "Koreans" have bypassed Japanese brands - and we have not seen this for a very long time."- said Vice President J.D. Power and Associates Rene Stevens.

Dynamics of reliability of brands of 3 summer cars. Based on data from J.D. Power on the reliability of three-year-old car brands, using the formula (1000 - Number of faults) / 10, we determined the "percentage" of brands reliability and built a graph of the reliability dynamics by years of popular brands, as well as the most reliable (Lexus) and the most unreliable brands (Land Rover).
It can be seen from the graph that there is now a slight decline in reliability, but in general, all mass brands are quite densely located around the average value and their reliability differs little from each other.
The most reliable cars according to the German organization TUV
