The fight lasted for 11 years, until it became known in 2013 that Evo was retiring. In general, having brewed in a traffic jam better than brewed in the cellar, we finally got out onto the track. But we did not go to the asphalt ring, but found an unpaved rally track in the Moscow region. The fact that the new STI will show an excellent ride on asphalt did not surprise me. The test drives of fellow journalists, press releases and, finally, the fourth place in the class in the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring speak volumes. But how far the new generation has gone from the rally was really interesting.

We arrived at the track in the midst of the local rally championship. Among the participants are all previous generations of "Poems" and not a single Evo. I even cursed right then, because I really wanted to clash with Mitsubishi in the fight. But alas.

Arriving without an invitation, we immediately became the object of attention of all without exception. Spectators, judges, pilots, mechanics, all took a break from their business to come up, look, take pictures and ask about the car. Everyone asked the same questions: “Is this new? The controls are fantastic! The power steering was not left in the new STI for nothing. Yes, overweight and all that, but what an ideal relationship between the driver and the road. And the suspension and symmetrical four-wheel drive keep the car on the track as if glued. You can't tear it off! And I tried, honestly. A dirt track, stabilization systems turned off, and the car fits into sharp turns at speed, only slightly skidding the butt, but doing it in a completely controlled manner. And each time leaving the turn, the car shoots forward with renewed vigor, leaving behind only clouds of dust and joyful cries of passengers.

I get close to the stud, jerk the handbrake and roll sideways in the Colin McRae style. All that is required of the driver is to shift into second gear, turn the wheels in the direction of the turn and turn on the gas, and the STI itself will return to the road. It is perhaps impossible to convey in words how transparent, controllable and beautiful the controllable skid on the new Subaru WRX STI is.
